Homosexuality legal: 5 judge-bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra delivered the verdict on Thursday.

All equal in love: Supreme Court ends Section 377, legalises gay sex

New Delhi: The gay community has the same right in India as any ordinary citizen, the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday -- ending a draconian British-era law that criminalised gay sex and heralding a new, bright era for gay rights in the country. In a unanimous decision, the five-judge bench -- led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra -- decriminalised a part of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code that banned consensual gay sex, holding out promise of a new dawn in personal liberty. The constitution bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra termed the part of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalises consensual unnatural sex as irrational, indefensible and manifestly arbitrary. While reading the verdict, CJI

Misra observed that the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) community has the same rights as of any ordinary citizen of India. He said respect for each others rights, and respect for others is supreme humanity. Criminalising gay sex is irrational and indefensible, he said. “No one can escape from their individualism.

The stern warning to Pakistan came after India and the US held their first 2+2 dialogue in New Delhi.

India, US ask Pakistan to act against terrorism emanating from its soil New Delhi: India and the US on Thursday asked Pakistan to ensure that its territory is not used to launch terror attacks and expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of cross-border terror strikes, including those on Mumbai, Pathankot and Uri.The stern warning to Pakistan came after India and the US held their first 2+2 dialogue in New Delhi during which External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held wide-ranging deliberations with US Secretary of State Michael R Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis. “The ministers announced their intent to increase informationsharing efforts on known or suspected terrorists and to implement UN Security Council Resolution 2396 on returning foreign terrorist fighters,” a joint statement issued after the talks said. “The ministers denounced any use of terrorist proxies in the region,

and in this context, they called on Pakistan to ensure that the territory under its control is not used to launch terrorist attacks on other countries,” it said. Ahead of the 10th anniversary of the 2008 Mumbai attack, they also called on Pakistan to expeditiously bring to justice the perpetrators of the Mumbai, Pathankot (2016), Uri (2016), and other cross-border terrorist attacks, the statement said. Addressing a joint press conference, Swaraj said the IndoUS counter-terrorism cooperation has acquired a new “qualitative edge and purpose”.

Rainbow flag flies high as LGBTQ community Jammu & Kashmir: Minority community in Kashmir welcomes verdict on Section 377 New Delhi: Celebrations broke out on Thursday as the LGBTQ community and others welcomed the Supreme Court judgment decriminalising consensual gay sex, asserting that the “historic” verdict granted them a basic human right but also acknowledging that complete equality was still some distance away. A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court unanimously decriminalised part of the 158-year-old colonial law under Section 377 of the IPC, which criminalises consensual unnatural sex, prompting joyous tears, hugs and dancing across the country. Activists, members of the LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans,

queer) community, authors and politicians welcomed the verdict -- which also said society cannot dictate a sexual relationship between consenting adults -- with many cutting cakes and unfurling the rainbow flag. LGBTQ activist Anjali Nazia said the Supreme Court had paved way for bigger judgements ahead. “We were granted a basic human right today and we can’t express just how happy we are,” Nazia told news agency PTI. Describing the verdict as a landmark, Anjan Joshi, member of the Society for People, Awareness, Care and Empowerment (SPACE), said it would help them in their quest for equality.

Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala held a press conference today and blamed the government for hike in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas

Congress calls for nationwide shutdown against govt’s ‘fuel loot’ on September 10

Hope SC ruling on gay sex boosts efforts to eliminate stigma: UN

New Delhi: The United Nations in India on Thursday lauded the Supreme Court for striking down a “key component” of IPC’s Section 377 which criminalises “specific sexual acts between adults” and said the judgment will boost efforts to eliminate stigma and discrimination against LGBTI persons. It also hoped the ruling will be the first step towards guaranteeing the full range of fundamental rights to LGBTI persons. Sexual orientation and gender expression form an integral part of an individual’s identity the world over, and violence, stigma and discrimination based on these attributes constitute an “egregious” violation of human rights, it said. “The United Nations in India welcomes the landmark ruling by the Supreme Court of India striking down a key component of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code which criminalized specific sexual acts between adults, a law dating back to British colonial rule that has targeted in particular lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) individuals and communities,” it said in a statement. LGBTI persons across the world continue to be the targets of violent attacks and are affected by multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination based on age, gender, ethnicity.

New Delhi : In the wake of escalating fuel prices, Congress party on Thursday said that it will organise a nationwide shutdown on September 10, claiming that the common man is bearing the brunt while Prime Minister Modi is busy in ‘jumlebazi’ (rhetoric). It also asked other opposition parties and civil society groups to join their protest against the government. Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala held a press conference today and blamed the government for the hike in prices of petrol, diesel and cooking gas. He alleged that the present government has earned crores of rupees by imposing a tax on petrol and diesel. “The Congress party has decided that we will be giving a call for Bharat Bandh on September 10, Monday, in order to highlight the Rs 11 lakh crore fuel loot and to demand an immediate reduction in central excise

duty as also excessive VAT in the state,” he was quoted as saying by PTI. Surjewala said the Congress also wants that petrol and diesel should be brought within the ambit of the GST so that the “common man whose budget has gone haywire is provided the requisite relief”. “We also call upon other societal groups, NGOs… to join this people’s movement,” he added. Petrol prices in New Delhi and Mumbai rose to an all-time high of Rs 79.51 and Rs 86.91 per litre respectively, on Thursday. Diesel prices too rose up by Rs 0.36 per litre in Delhi (Rs 71.55 per litre) and Rs 0.42 in Mumbai (Rs 75.96 per litre). Earlier in the day, Surjewala took to poetry while launching a scathing attack on the government over the record fall in rupee against the dollar. He held the government responsible for the decline in the value of Indian currency.

systematically marginalised, says BJP leader

Jammu : Jammu and Kashmir unit of the BJP on Thursday alleged that the minority community in Kashmir Valley has been systematically marginalised on socio-economic and political fronts over the decades and the practice continues. This, the party alleged, has relegated the community to the fringe of the social milieu. “The minority community in Kashmir Valley has been systematically marginalised on socio-economic and political fronts over the decades and

this systematic exclusion continues even today,” BJP vice president G L Raina told reporters in Jammu. It has relegated the community to the fringe of the social milieu and ultimately resulted in its physical expulsion in 1989-90, he alleged. “Not only did the successive administrations fail to take any steps to arrest or reverse this policy of exclusion and marginalisation, they were also unsuccessful in developing strategies to guarantee equal, secure and sustainable progress,” he added.

KCR met Governor ESL Narasimhan and informed him about decision to dissolve Telangana Assembly.

Stage set for early polls in Telangana; KCR dissolves state Assembly

Hyderabad: Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has decided to dissolve state Assembly paving way for early election. The chief minister met Telangana Governor ESL Narasimhan and informed him about the decision to dissolve the state Assembly. The governor approved assembly dissolution and asked Rao to continue as caretaker chief minister of the state till the new government is formed. The decision to dissolve the Assembly came after KCR held a meeting with his Cabinet on Thursday. The Telangana

Cabinet meet, the second in five days, came amid speculations that KCR is all set to announce the dissolution of state assembly. On Wednesday, sources in the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samiti (TRS) claimed that the government has more-or-less made up its

mind on the dissolution of the assembly, whose term ends next year, news agency PTI reported. The sources have added that the chief minister saw an advantage in delinking Assembly elections, which were originally scheduled to be held next year, with the Lok Sabha polls. In recent weeks, the state government had announced a slew of measures for the benefit of various sections of the society further giving a boost to speculations that the party could go for early elections to cash in on the perceived positive atmosphere prevailing for it in the state.

‘Bharat Bandh’ gets tepid response in north Indian states

New Delhi : The call for a ‘Bharat Bandh’ by some upper caste and OBC groups against the recent amendment approved by Parliament to overturn a Supreme Court judgment on the Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (Prevention of Atrocities) Act witnessed a lukewarm response on Thursday. The protests were largely peaceful in most north Indian states despite some scattered incidents of violence being reported from Bihar and UP. Shops, schools and other commercial establishments were closed in parts of Bihar, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. In Bihar, train services were affected in Rajgir and Patna’s Rajendra Nagar terminus when some protestors delayed the movement of trains for about 30 minutes, PTI quoted officials as saying. Protesters gheraoed BJP’s and JD(U)’s

headquarters in Patna and blamed the ruling alliance for their ‘betrayal’ to the upper caste communities who voted them to power. The shutdown had a strong impact in Muzaffarpur, where bandh supporters blocked traffic in the town and on the national highway. They also burnt tyres at many places and clashed with policemen who tried to stop them. In UP, six policemen were injured during a scuffle with protesters blocking traffic in UP’s Ballia district.

Reporting a massacre deserves awards, not punishment

On 2 September last year, Buddhist villagers and Myanmar’s armed forces killed 10 Rohingya men in a village called Inn Din in Rakhine state. Two Reuters journalists—Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo—painstakingly pieced together evidence that exposed the massacre. In December, police officers invited the two reporters to a restaurant and gave them some documents. As they left the restaurant, they were arrested and charged with violating the colonial-era Official Secrets Act for possessing the documents. On 27 August, a panel of experienced UN investigators accused the Myanmar army of war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide. Their meticulous report focused on violence across the country against many minorities, not only Rohingyas. Predictably, the Myanmar government dismissed the report. The International Criminal Court is considering its jurisdiction over the Rakhine state and there are calls for prosecuting Myanmar’s generals. In a remarkable move, Facebook blocked 18 accounts (including that of the army chief), one Instagram account, and 52 Facebook pages, which are followed by almost 12 million people in the country (Myanmar’s population is 53 million and Facebook is the main gateway to the Internet in the country), for spreading“hate and misinformation. On Monday, about a year after the Inn Din massacre, Wa Lone and Kyaw Soe Oo were sentenced to seven years in jail. They can appeal to a regional court and later to the Supreme Court. The scenes outside the Yangon northern district court were chaotic. Journalists keen to have a word with the two reporters tried to stop the police van taking the them away, but the van continued to move, threatening to run over them. The reporters are young —Wa Lone is 32 and Kyaw Soe Oo is 28—and Myanmar’s prisons conditions are atrocious. Their families are distraught. The story the Reuters reporters wrote with colleagues Simon Lewis and Antoni Slodkowski was harrowing in its depiction of the cold-blooded inhumanity of the killers. It deserves awards, not punishment. Those reading this column online can read it here. Inn Din is located to the north of Rakhine’s capital Sittwe, between the Mayu mountains and the Bay of Bengal. On 25 August last year, the Myanmar army says there were simultaneous attacks on police posts by Rohingya separatists. Around that time, a Buddhist farmer called Maung Ni disappeared after leaving home to tend to his cattle. Worried Buddhists sought sanctuary in a monastery. The military arrived with a police battalion. Rohingya homes were looted and torched.

Will take about four months to be fully fit, says Wriddhiman Saha

New Delhi: Wriddhiman Saha has said that it will take at least four months for him to get back to full fitness. “As per the doctors, it varies from body to body as far as full recovery is concerned. Safe to say, it will take four months,” the wicketkeeper told Cricbuzz. Saha has been out of action ever since his last IPL match for Sunrisers Hyderabad in May due to a number of injuries, chief of which were a broken finger and a shoulder problem. He said that he is focussing on taking his recovery process one step at a time instead of getting back onto the pitch as soon as possible. “I have just started the rehab two days back at the NCA, I haven’t been told how long I would need to be here. But yes, a stretch of 3-4 months can take a toll, so I will be given breaks and be with family, come back and resume

the rehab, something on these lines,” Saha said. His injury was one that had a lot of speculation surrounding it with there being allegations that it was aggravated because of a bungled rehabilitation. He had initially been sidelined of the second and third Test in South Africa because of a hamstring injury before which he missed the latter stages of the IPL due to a finger injury, which was later revealed to be a broken thumb when he got ruled out of the Test match against Afghanistan. All this while, the BCCI never spoke about a shoulder injury. Saha finally revealed the sequence of events himself. “When I came for a rehab from the South Africa tour, my shoulder injury was detected, which probably was because of some dive or something I can’t remember. I recovered fully after that.

Novak Djokovic beats heat and John Millman to reach semis

New York : Novak Djokovic sweated it out from behind the baseline to beat Australian John Millman 6-3 6-4 6-4 at the U.S. Open on Wednesday and set up a semi-final with Japan’s Kei Nishikori. Djokovic, a two-time champion at Flushing Meadows, struggled with the humidity at Arthur Ashe Stadium but kept his cool mentally, saving the only break point he faced in the first set and wrapping up the opener in an hour. “(I was) very tested,” Djokovic said. “Almost three hours. It’s midnight now. Credit to John for putting up a great battle.” Millman is used to the searing heat in his native Brisbane, but needed to leave court to change with the score level at 2-2 in the second, telling the umpire he was unable to put the ball

in his pocket because his shorts were soaked through with sweat. The U.S. Tennis Association said in a statement that Millman was sweating so profusely that the moisture dripping onto court had made the surface too dangerous to play on. “These night matches the humidity goes through the roof,” Millman said. “It is tricky, but it’s the same for both people. You’re dripping. “But that’s no excuse or anything. I’d play in a swimming pool if I got to play a quarter-final every week at a Grand Slam. That would be pretty fun.” Millman, who beat Roger Federer in the previous round, returned after a brief interval but found no joy against Djokovic’s serve and the Serb broke the Australian in the penultimate game before serving out the second set.

New York : There’s a part of 2010 French Open champion Francesca Schiavone that would love to continue competing. After several months of debating it, she knew her place in her sport is now as a coach. Schiavone announced her retirement at age 38 during a news conference at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, saying she accomplished her two biggest goals as a player _ winning a title at Roland Garros and being ranked in the top 10 _ and now wants to try to help someone else become

good enough to earn a Grand Slam trophy. “I arrive (at) this decision to say goodbye to the tennis with my heart,” Schiavone said. “Because my head, when I arrive here, says, `Please go to the court, fight, because I can beat many other players.’ But my heart says that I am (at) peace like this, that I am very happy about my career, my life, and everything.” Schiavone _ it’s pronounced Skeeah-VOH-nay _ really came out of nowhere at the French Open eight years ago, beating Sam Stosur 6-4, 7-6 (2) in

the final to become the first woman from Italy to win a major singles championship. Afterward, she kissed the court’s red clay. Seeded only 17th, she defeated three top-10 opponents along the way, plus No. 11 Li Na in a third-round match Schiavone considers “the most beautiful match of that Slam.” She had never been past the quarterfinals at 38 previous Grand Slam appearances. Just shy of her 30th birthday at the time, she was the oldest woman since 1969 to win her first major trophy.

Leroy Sane can unlock potential with attitude adjustment, says Toni Kroos

Sane, left out of Germany’s squad for their World Cup campaign in Russia, was recalled by manager Joachim Loew for the Nations League encounter against France on Thursday and Kroos suggested the 22-year-old had to show more desire. “Sometimes you have the feeling with Leroy’s

He has to improve his body language,” Real Madrid midfielder Kroos told reporters. “He’s a player who has everything you need to be a worldclass player but sometimes you have to tell him he has to perform better.” Sane scored 10 goals in 32 league appearances last season as City cruised to the title but he has not been able to force his way into Pep Guardiola’s starting side in this campaign. AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat Congress Thursday announced that it would observe a 24-hour fast on Friday in support of Patidar leader Hardik Patel if the state government did not begin talks with him. Mr Patel’s fast, which started on August 25 at his farmhouse near Ahmedabad, entered its 13th day Thursday as a visibly weak Patel was seen being moved around in a wheelchair. Doctors from Sola Civil hospital, after an examination, advised him to immediately get admitted for medical treatment.Thirty state Congress leaders, including party state unit president

Amit Chavda and leader of opposition Paresh Dhanani and around 25 MLAs, met Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani in connection with Patel’s fast on Thursday. The Congress delegation demanded that the state government begin negotiations with Patel and accept his demands concerning farm loan waiver. “If the state government does not give a positive response to our demand, the Congress will sit on a 24hour fast at each district headquarters of the state from 11 tomorrow in support of Hardik,” Dhanani told reporters in Gandhinagar after meeting Rupani.

Hardik Patel, whose indefinite hunger strike entered thirteenth day on Thursday, gave up taking water and expressed his disappointment with the BJP government which has not yet responded to his demands. Convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS) Nikhil Savani said, “From today evening, he (Hardik) has stopped taking water since the state government has not been talking anything

about our demands.” According to PAAS conveners present at the fast venue, Hardik has lost significant weight resulting in so much weakness that he has started moving in a wheelchair. In the evening, Hardik tweeted: “Despite 13 days of hunger strike, the BJP government has not given any thought over the two big issues — of farmers’ loan and quota for Patidars — and has also not said anything. No issues, the elections are coming.”

Washington : The federal judge overseeing the second trial of Paul Manafort, President Donald Trump’s one-time campaign chairman, ruled on Wednesday that a federal investigation of possible collusion between the campaign and Russia cannot be discussed during the trial. The collusion investigation being led by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller is “wholly irrelevant to the charges in this case,” Judge Amy Berman Jackson said during a pre-trial hearing in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia. Manafort was convicted last month in Virginia of charges including bank and tax fraud in what was the first trial arising from Mueller’s investigation of Russia’s role in the 2016 U.S. election. Jackson said on Wednesday that while prosecutors may present evidence used in that trial, the jury will not be allowed to hear about Manafort’s conviction. She also said she plans to deny a request by Manafort’s defense attorneys to move the trial to a different court, saying that a concern about the political affiliations of the jury pool in Washington, D.C., is “not a lawful basis” for a venue transfer.

Rajkot: Rainfall in Saurashtra, especially Rajkot, has been withdrawn. The monsoon has not gone yet. The effect of which is found in the dams of water sources. It is now possible to give 20 days to Aji dam. Talking about the Nayari-1 dam, it has got enough water for four months. If the rain is still stretching for 15 days, water will be removed from Aji. On the other hand, Bharadhar dam is full of half, but Jitpur and Rajkot can be given yearly as per the water. Drinking water and irrigation water are

provided in 22 dams out of the 83 dams in Rajkot irrigation circle. However, in the last year, the government had given clear instructions that the water used for drinking water should not be released on any condition in case of irrigation. The instructions will also be complied with this year. If now there is no rain, then only Narmada will depend on its base. However, due to the increasing water level in Narmada, there is no reason for concern currently.

Jerusalem : Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the closure of Israel’s embassy in Paraguay on Wednesday, hours after the Latin American nation’s new government announced it would move its embassy back to Tel Aviv from Jerusalem. Paraguay’s decision was a blow to Israel’s efforts to achieve external recognition of Jerusalem as its capital, which appeared to have gained some traction this year with the United States, Guatemala, and Paraguay opening embassies there. Most countries do not recognize Israeli sovereignty over the entire city and say its final status should be set in peace talks. Paraguay’s foreign minister called Israel’s reaction “disproportionate.” Paraguay President Mario Abdo defended his decision as part of an effort to support “broad, lasting and just peace” among Israelis and Palestinians.“Paraguay is a country of principles,” Abdo said on Twitter. Abdo took office last month and belongs to the same conservative party as his predecessor Horacio Cartes, who inaugurated Paraguay’s new embassy in Jerusalem in May. The Palestinians said their foreign minister, Riyad al-Maliki, met Abdo two weeks ago and hailed Paraguay’s change of mind as “a new Palestinian diplomatic achievement.” “Minister Maliki exerted a big effort during his meeting with the new president who instructed his foreign minister to arrange the issue,” the Palestinian foreign ministry said in a statement.
