Short News Potholes probably kill more than those on border or by terrorists: SC New Delhi : The Supreme Court Thursday expressed concern over 14,926 people being killed in accidents due to potholes on roads across the country in the last five years. A bench headed by Justice Madan B Lokur said the large number of deaths caused due to potholes was “unacceptable” and was “probably more than those killed on border or by the terrorists.” The bench, also comprising Justices Deepak Gupta and Hemant Gupta, said the number of deaths from 2013 to 2017 in accidents due to potholes indicated that the authorities concerned were not maintaining the roads. The bench sought a response from the Centre on the report filed by the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, headed by former apex court judge Justice K S Radhakrishnan. The bench has posted the matter for further hearing in January.

BJP now trying to divide deities on caste lines: Mayawati New Delhi : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) supremo Mayawati today hit out at the BJP, alleging that after dividing people into caste lines, it was now segregating deities for votes. Referring to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s recent claim that Lord Hanuman was a “Dalit”, she said the top leadership of the BJP has “stooped to such a level for votes that they are not even sparing the deities”. She alleged while the common man and farmers are suffering under the BJP rule, the party is talking of constructing a temple in Ayodhya, ignoring its primary responsibility of governance as enshrined in the Constitution. Addressing a gathering of party functionaries at an event to mark the death anniversary of B R Ambedkar, she said following Adityanath’s statement, people have been demanding that Dalits be appointed as priests in Hanuman temples.

Learn to be tolerant like Vajpayee, Farooq Abdullah’s advice to PM Modi

Jammu : Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah Thursday had a piece of advice for Prime Minister Narendra Modi – be tolerant like Atal Bihari Vajpayee to ensure acceptance by all people. Speaking at an event here, the National Conference patriarch also accused the BJP of following a divisive agenda. “When (Jawaharlal) Nehru unfurled the tricolour at the Red Fort for the first time, he never thought that a party will come to power in future which will try to divide this country. Britishers divided it into India and Pakistan and the country will be divided into many parts if the ruling

party continues with its divisive agenda,” he claimed He said that the BJP claims Lord Ram is theirs but according to holy texts, “Bhagwan Ram belong to the entire universe and not Hindus alone”. Asking Modi to be “tolerant like Vajpayee”, Farooq said, “He is the prime minister. He has to come up to that level and should not get engaged in smaller issues. At time I feel sorry for his statements.” He went on to add, “Please inculcate sense of tolerance, Prime Minister sahib. If you have to run this country, you have to be tolerant and ensure acceptance by others. All have to be taken along, if you have run this country.

Calcutta High Court denies permission to Amit Shah’s ‘Rath Yatra’ Kolkata : The Calcutta High Court on Thursday rejected the BJP’s petition to allow the party to hold rath yatras in West Bengal, scheduled to be flagged off by BJP national president Amit Shah from Cooch Behar on Friday. Deferring the yatras till January 9 when the court will hear the matter again, the single bench of Justice Tapabrata Chakraborty Thursday observed that reports need to be sought from all Superintendents of Police in the state as the proposed yatras will cover all 42 Lok Sabha constituencies in Bengal. “The court felt that the BJP moved the court pretty late on December 3 and in the current short notice it will be difficult for the state government to take adequate law and order measures. It is a big rally which will be held across the state. Therefore, it has advised all district BJP presidents to sit with respective SPs to chalk out detailed plans. The court also took note of the police and IB reports submitted before the order was passed,” said advocate Arka Kumar Nag, who appeared for the state government. State advocate general Kishore Dutta told the court that the Cooch Behar SP refused permission for the BJP president-led rath yatra on Friday and the yatra might cause communal tension.

SC reserves order on CBI Director Alok Verma’s plea against Centre’s decision to divest him of powers

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Thursday reserved its order on the plea of CBI Director Alok Verma challenging Centre’s decision to divest him of his powers and sent him on leave. The court also heard the petition moved by NGO Common Cause which had sought court-monitored SIT probe into allegations of corruption against various CBI officials including Special Director Rakesh Asthana.

During the hearing of CBI Director’s plea, the CVC told the apex court that extraordinary situations need extraordinary remedies. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, appearing for the CVC, referred to apex court judgments and laws governing the CBI and said the Commission’s superintendence

(over the CBI) encompasses “surprise, extraordinary situations”. A bench headed by Gogoi said Attorney General K K Venugopal told the court that circumstances culminating in the situation had started in July. “Essence of the government action must be in the interest of the institution,” the bench said. The apex court observed that it was not that the fight between the CBI Director and Special Director Rakesh Asthana emerged overnight, forcing the government to divest the Director of powers without consulting the Selection Committee.

Another blatant assault on the state

Jungle raj is a phrase that is often dished out in relation to India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, for its private armies, corruption, and broken law and order situation. Yet, even by its wretched standards, this week’s killing of inspector Subodh Kumar Singh in Bulandshahr marks a new low. The world over, violence by the hard right is on the rise. But the police are rarely targeted with the kind of impunity that is seen in parts of India. American police officers are shot and killed in the line of duty (43 this year alone) in many situations, but deliberate murder while trying to control a violent crowd isn’t among them. That was the case on 3 December, when alleged cow protection vigilantes killed Singh in a village in Bulandshahr as he tried to rein in a mob incensed by reports that a cattle carcass had been discovered in a nearby jungle. It’s a struggle to find a more appropriate metaphor for lawlessness than “jungle”, a dark place where anything goes. Yet, Uttar Pradesh is far from being the only Indian state with such displays of aggression against the state. Indeed, the events in Bulandshahr, with their obvious communal ring (the killing took place on the last day of a large Tablighi Ijtema gathering of Muslims, some 40km away), fall into a pattern of deliberate confrontation by right-wing and hard-right activists against organs of the state. The chain of events began 26 years ago to the day (6 December) when Hindutva activists— egged on by leading national-level politicians of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)—tore down the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, claiming they were setting right a historical wrong. Now, the return of a central government led by the BJP has once again unleashed pro-Hindu and uppercaste forces that had lain relatively dormant for a decade. Ignoring periodic government censure, hard-right activists, beginning with the lynching of Muslims suspected to be eating or storing beef, have been able to marshal their forces and lay into their targets with shocking ease. The run-up to 6 December 1992 was replete with instances of similar rejection of constitutional authority. Back in 1992, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Kalyan Singh submitted a four-point affidavit to the Supreme Court, promising security of the mosque and saying he will only allow a symbolic kar sewa (rituals for building a temple) at the disputed site that Hindus claim to be the birthplace of Ram. “It may be mentioned that the present government of Uttar Pradesh has an enviable record of maintaining law and order in the state.

Priyanka Chopra reacts on a bizarre article that called her ‘global scam artist’

Mumbai: A recent article in New York Times’ The Cut, has drawn widespread flak for its take on Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ relationship. The website published a bizarre article with the headline “Is Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’s Love for Real?”. After much criticism, The Cut has now deleted the controversial article. According to the report in Hindustan Times, Priyanka has responded to the article saying she did not want to react to such “random things”. She told the daily, “I

don’t even want to react or comment. It’s not even in my stratosphere. I’m in a happy place at this moment. These kind of random things can’t disturb it.” The earlier version of the article read, “Priyanka: She is a modern-day scam artist, in my opinion. That’s right: Nicholas Jonas married into a fraudulent relationship against his will this past Saturday, December the 1st, and I’ll tell you why I think so.” The article also spoke of Priyanka and Nick’s lavish wedding as it read, “Priyanka and Nick

are finding ways for their ‘love’ make them money – circumventing the methods used by the celebrities of yore, who stuck to selling their wedding or baby photos to magazines.” Priyanka’s brother-inlaw and sister-in-law, Joe Jonas and Game of Thrones star, Sophie Turner condemned the article. Taking to Twitter, Joe wrote: “This is disgusting. @TheCut should be ashamed to have someone write such evil words. What Nick & Pri have is Beautiful Love. Thank u, Next.”

But it’s up to each individual and what they want to make of it. “I was filming a web series till I was five months pregnant. I did the cover of Vogue India with Hrithik (Roshan) when I was four months pregnant… I believe that we are finally arriving at a place where women don’t need to have career apprehensions towards starting a family. You can have it all. You might have to run a tight ship and have the occasional meltdown but it’s all good,” Lisa said.

Central bank maintained status quo on all key policy rates in the fifth bi-monthly monetary policy review.

RBI may cut rates by 0.25 pc in Feb or April policy review: BofAML

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) may cut key policy rates by 0.25 per cent either at the upcoming policy review in February or the one after that in April, Bank of America Merrill Lynch said on Thursday. For the second time in a row, the central bank maintained status quo on all key policy rates in the fifth bi-monthly monetary policy review announced on Wednesday. It had

raised the repo rate, or the rate at which the RBI lends short-term money to the banks, twice by 0.25 per cent during its June and August policy reviews. “We expect the RBI MPC (monetary policy committee) to roll back at least 0.25 per cent of the 0.50 per cent rate hike, in February or April,” the American brokerage said in a statement. It said although RBI retained

the “calibrated tightening” stance, governor Urjit Patel said there is room for commensurate policy action opens up if risks to their inflation forecast do not materialise. It can be noted that the RBI lowered its second half inflation estimate to 2.7-3.2 per cent, from the earlier 3.9-4.5 per cent earlier. “If the upside risks we have flagged do not materialise or are muted in their impact as reflected in

the incoming data, there is a possibility of space opening up for commensurate policy actions,” Patel had said on Wednesday, hinting of a hike. The risks include food prices, impact of minimum support prices hike on inflation, crude prices and global financial markets. The brokerage said the monetary policy committee’s inflation risks are “proving overdone” and the headline price rise

number is expected to slip to 2.8 per cent on low inflation on the agricultural front. The headline inflation will come at 3.7 per cent for in December and the second half average will be 3.5 per cent, which is lower than the 4 per cent medium term target for RBI, the brokerage said, pointing it as a key factor it will monitor to decide whether the cut happens in February or April.

For people like me, for whom this temple has an article of faith since their childhood, the development of this temple is incomplete and meaningless till the time entire temple is not plated with gold, the BJP president said.

Restoring pride and glory of Somnath temple only answer to desecration in the past: Amit Shah

Somnath : While people should no longer harbour feeling of vengeance against those who desecrated Somnath temple 17 times, the only redemption can be to restore its pride and glory by plating the entire temple with gold, BJP president Amit Shah said on Thursday. After speaking about the history of the Somnath temple and how it was vandalised by Muslim invaders between 11th to 18th century, Shah said the temple had come a long way after it was rebuilt in 1950s. But he said, the only answer to repeated attacks on the temple could be to restore its glory and pride one more time. “Today, one crore people are visiting the temple every year. There

are good facilities here and Shree Somnath Trust is trying its best for developing more tourist facilities. But for people like me, for whom this temple has an article of faith since their childhood, the development of this temple is incomplete and

meaningless till the time entire temple is not plated with gold. This is a resolve of scores of people. From a religious point of view, to plate Lord Shiva’s shrine with gold could be the height of folly. There cannot be a revenge against those who

have tried to destroy pride and glory of this place. Nor should we harbour any feeling of vengeance. A firm resolve to restore its pride and glory can only be its answer. As people, as a follower of the religion, to restore the pride and eminence of this jyotirlingam could be our collective resolve,” Shah said. The BJP president is also one of the trustees of Shree Somnath Trust (SKT), a religious trust which manages and maintains the Somnath temple and other temple in the complex. Shah was addressing a gathering on Chowapaty Ground near the Somnath temple after laying the foundation stone of a promenade along the coastline near the temple.
