“Democracy became our most precious guide towards peace and regeneration from the swamp of poverty created by centuries of colonial rule. For us, democracy is not a gift, but a sacred trust,” says Pranab Mukherjee in his address at RSS headquarters in Nagpur.

‘India respects diversity and pluralism’: Pranab Mukherjee’s top quotes at RSS meet

New Delhi : Former President and Congress veteran Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday delivered his first speech from the RSS platform. The former President was speaking at the concluding ceremony of the RSS’s Tritiya Varsh Training programme at the Sangh headquarters in Nagpur. The former President started his address by saying, “I am here amongst you to share my understanding with you of the concepts of nation, nationalism and patriotism in the context of India.” He also spoke about ancient institutions of India that attracted students from outside as well. Any attempt at defining our nationhood in terms of dogma and identities or religion,

region, hatred and intolerance will only lead to dilution of our identity. We accept and respect our pluralism and celebrate our diversity. Our national identity has emerged after a long drawn process of confluence and assimilation, the multiple cultures and faiths make us special and tolerant. Democracy became our most precious guide towards

peace and regeneration from the swamp of poverty created by centuries of colonial rule. For us, democracy is not a gift, but a sacred trust. The Constitution of India represents the hopes and aspirations of a billion plus Indians. From our Constitution flows our nationalism. The construct of Indian Nationalism is Constitutional Patriotism. India’s nationhood is not one lang, one religion, one enemy. It is perennial universalism of 1.3 billion people who use more than 122 languages and 1600 dialects, practice 7 major religions and belong to three major ethnic groups that live under one system, one flag and one identity of being Bhartiya.

Separatists should stop playing with children’s future in Kashmir: Rajnath Singh

New Delhi : Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who is on a two-day visit to Jammu and Kashmir to review the security situation, on Thursday did not rule out extending the suspension of antimilitancy operations beyond the month of Ramzan and said a final decision would be taken after talks with the stakeholders. Singh, who unveiled a list of projects related to creating employment opportunities and sports infrastructure to attract Kashmiri youths, also lashed out at Pakistan for letting terror groups use its land as a launchpad against India. “Pakistan should stop letting its land being used as a terror haven. If you cannot stop infiltration and reign in terrorists, then take help from us,” the Home Minister said, adding that India was the only country where people of all major religions reside peacefully. Urging separatists not to play with the future of Kashmiri youths, Singh said they were also India’s children and that was why the decision to withdraw cases against minors and those “misled into stone pelting” was taken. “They (separatists) can play any kind of politics, but they should not play with future of children.

Pranab family rift may be peripheral

The father-daughter discord over Pranab Mukherjee’s visit to the RSS headquarters is liable to be interpreted as a family crisis. But that will amount to reading too much into something that has been thrust upon the daughter, who happens to be the spokesperson of Delhi Congress. With what she called the ‘dirty trick department’ of RSS floating rumours that she was about to join the BJP, Sharmistha Mukherjee had no option but to take a stand on her father’s ‘ill-advised’ acceptance of the invitation from the Sangh Parivar to visit its headquarters and deliver a speech. She even told Mukherjee in a tweet that, like the fake news of her joining BJP, the RSS was sure to use the footage of his address to spread false accounts and rumours. The ‘speech will be forgotten’ but the ‘visuals will remain’, she reminded her father. Congress has been overly cautious about responding to the news of the former President’s Nagpur visit, with key leaders mostly keeping mum, although noises did come from various quarters. P Chidambaram was, perhaps, the only senior leader to comment on Mukherjee’s decision, by calling upon the former President to use the occasion to bring certain home truths to the attention of the Sangh Parivar. But with Sonia Gandhi’s close aide Ahmed Patel joining the chorus hours before Pranab’s engagement was to start, the official line was clear and it was all the more reason for the former President’s daughter to make her stand clear. Sharmistha is the president of Mahila Congress as well as in-charge of the communication department of Delhi unit of the party, which she joined in 2014. She had contested the Delhi Assembly elections in 2015, but was defeated by an Aam Aadmi Party candidate. In fact, the rumours about her joining the BJP prompted Delhi Congress chief Ajay Maken to issue a denial saying Sharmistha Mukherjee is a ‘devoted’ Congress person. There is no denying that Sharmishta owes her position in the Congress party to her illustrious father rather than her own credentials. So her latest posturing can only be seen as prompted by the compulsions of the situation rather than any serious rift in the family. There have been suggestions that, following Sharmishta’s clarification, her brother Abhijit Mukherjee also may speak up against the father’s action. It is obvious the RSS will use Pranab’s visit to mainstream its identity, which has been facing a relentless onslaught from non-BJP parties in view of the ascendance of Hindutva elements ever since Modi came to power. It is already projecting the invitation to Pranab as its endeavour to promote exchange of views, which it says is intrinsic to the Indian concept of dialogue and a continuation of the democratic traditions enshrined in the Indian cultural ethos.

Hollywood - Bollywood ‘Dhadak’ is looked-forward-to movies this year since it has been linked to Marathi blockbuster ‘Sairat’.

Lili Reinhart shuts up body shamers

Mumbai: Last week, rumours started circulating that Riverdale star, Lili Reinhart was pregnant based on a photo of her, in which she looked bloated. The Riverdale actress immediately took to Instagram to shut down her bodyshamers with a series of calm and collected posts, reports Teen Vouge. Even though she did not let it on, the rumour apparently had a great impact on her self esteem. She said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, “ I’m 21 I’m not pregnant [and] I don’t want people to think I’m pregnant if I’m not pregnant. It did take a hit to my selfesteem for a second, and then I kind of picked myself back up and said, ‘I’m not going to let this ruin my day!’.”

Dhadak not remake of Sairat; Janhvi, Ishaan gear up for film with R. Balki? Mumbai: ‘Dhadak’ is one of the most looked-forward-to movies this year especially since it has been linked to Marathi blockbuster ‘Sairat’. Ishaan however told DNA, “Dhadak is an adaptation, rather than a remake.” The actor added, “But it depends on your intention behind directing a film. Director Shashank Khaitan understood that it’s such an important film for our country. Also, it is so easily adaptable into the different cultural milieu that it was important to make this film reach out to more audiences and he wanted to do it his way.” He says, “I loved Sairat and was affected by it. I understand the responsibility of all the hopes that come with it. But I prefer not to think about these things when I’m

working in a creative environment because it may influence my performance. Since we are adapting it, there’s scope to be different. It’s also been under the public eye, so it had a different journey from Sairat.” He reveals, “Karan sir wanted to meet me because he had seen some of my pictures and footage and wanted to cast me in a film. He got my number from my brother (Shahid Kapoor), with whom he was co-judging a show and also working on Shaandaar. He met me and we were in talks for another film. But the subject changed. He chose not to audition me and offered me Dhadak instead.” Interestingly Ishaan was spotted along with his coactress Janhvi Kapoor with R. Balki and it appears that they are planning a project together already!

Amitabh Bachchan and Nagraj Manjule team up for Bhushan Kumar’s ‘Jhund’

Mumbai: T-Series head honcho Bhushan Kumar will produce Nagraj Manjule’s Jhund which will take off soon. The producer has also roped in Amitabh Bachchan who will be playing the lead role. The actor will be seen essaying the role of a retired sports teacher who starts a slum soccer movement. According to director Nagraj, the film will also touch upon issues of drug abuse and crime and will also showcase how sports can reform kids. Bhushan Kumar who will be working with Big

B for the second time after ‘Bhootnath Returns’ is looking forward to collaborating with the megastar once again. About producing Jhund, Bhushan Kumar says, “I am glad that the project will take off soon. I am happy to get an opportunity to work with Amitji again, I am looking forward to working with him. When Savita Raj Hiremath got the script to me and I saw Nagraj’s dedication to the subject, it made me want to produce the film.

I have never rejected a film because of another actor: Taapsee Pannu clears the air Mumbai: A few days ago, there were rumours that Taapsee Pannu had rejected a film because it was to star Nawazuddin Siddiqui. This prompted a response from Nawaz, who put up a post on twitter. “An actress claimed to not be doing a thriller film with me. I would like to clarify in the first place that I was never part of any thriller film. So, it’s baseless,” said the actor, without naming Taapsee. With social media entering the fray,

the war of words could quickly escalate. However, actress Taapsee issued a clarification to calm the situation. “There are so many films that come our way. I will not talk about a film if I had rejected it. I do not think that it is ethical for me to speak about it. On the other hand, never have I rejected a film because of another actor. Whatever I know of that script, Nawaz is perfect for it. But that was never the reason for me rejecting the film,” she said.

Aishwarya is pillar of Fanne Khan, can’t see Editor film happening without her: Anil Kapoor Actress Divya Dutta, - Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

inaugurated the Thailand Week 2018

Mumbai: The bi-lateral trade between India and Thailand is expected to touch 11,000 million US dollar during the current financial year ending December 2018, announced Ekapol Poolpipat, Consul General, Royal Thai Consulate-General Mumbai. The bi-lateral trade during the year ended December 2017 was around 10,000 million US dollar. Delivering a key note address at the inauguration of 3-day Thailand Week 2018 at Bombay Exhibition Centre, Goregoan, Poolpipat said the bilateral trade between the two countries

during the first four months-January to April 2018 have gone up considerably and touched 857 Million US dollar against 720 Million US dollar during the corresponding period of the previous year. Earlier, famous and leading film actress, Divya Dutta, inaugurated the Thailand Week 2018 by lighting the lamp and cutting the ribbon. Inaugurating the trade show, Divya Dutta said Indian traders are very much interested in imports of Thailand products and services. However, India needs to improve infrastructural facilities including roads to facilitate the trade.

Mumbai: After just one release last year and none a year before that, Anil Kapoor is having one of his busiest years, with four films lined up this year, ‘Fanne Khan’, ‘Race 3’, ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga’ and ‘Total Dhamaal.’ While Race 3 brings him back to the franchise, the interesting bit about the other three releases is his reunion with leading ladies Aishwarya Rai Bachchan after ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’, Madhuri Dixit Nene after ‘Lajja’ and Juhi Chawla after ‘Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kaate.’ Talking about it in an interview to DNA, Anil said, “I am very happy that all of them agreed to do the films. I can’t see ‘Fanne Khan’ happening without Aishwarya. I have done ‘Taal’ and ‘Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai’ with her earlier. Both were successful and appreciated. In ‘Fanne Khan’, she is not opposite me, but she

is the pillar of the film. “Madhuri and I are chhapa and kaata in ‘Total Dhamaal’ — two sides of the same coin! Madhuri alone will not be correct for the comedy and I alone will not be the same without her. “As far as Juhi is concerned, I feel I should have done more work with her. When I used to meet her, I would say ‘Juhi, main tere saath zyaada kaam nahin kar saka, mujhe teen-chaar aur films karni chahiye.’ It was so much fun working with her.

I did a few films with her (‘Benaam Badshah’ and ‘Loafer’ to name a few), but none of them became big hits. So, when she agreed to do ‘Ek Ladki Ko Dekha’, I got really excited, because her smile, voice and comic timing is very special. We have few scenes in the film, but hopefully after this I’ll act in more movies with her.” “I am fortunate I got an opportunity to work with these beautiful girls, who have made a mark in their personal and professional lives. They carry themselves so beautifully that working with them is an honour. They will make these three films special by being in them.” Meanwhile, his children’s films ‘Veere Di Wedding’, starring Sonam and produced by Rhea and ‘Bhavesh Joshi Superhero’ featuring Harshvardhan both released this Friday. “Yes, it was wonderful.

Alia opens up on marriage, reveals how Aamir gave her happiness Mumbai: Ranbir Kapoor recently admitted that he is dating his ‘Brahmastra’ co-star Alia Bhatt. The two had attended Sonam Kapoor Ahuja’s wedding reception together, from where the speculations grew stronger. When asked about her own marriage, Alia told Hindustan Times, “Right now, I am not thinking about getting married. But honestly, I am not someone who thinks about things. I just go ahead and do them (laughs). It could be a very random thing since I consider myself a random person. So, I may make these decisions also at random. I am not someone who plans out my life thinking, ‘Well, that’s how it should be done.’ I feel the best things in life should happen when they are least expected. Maybe, people expect me to get married at 30, but I might surprise myself as well and get married before that.” “I may be like, ‘Listen, I love you, so let’s get married and live together but I will still work.

SRK gives epic reply to fan who asked him about 4th child, has gems for others too Mumbai: After ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’, Shah Rukh Khan has been missing from the big screen and with ‘Zero’ slated for release later this year, fans might be growing impatient. The superstar found some free time amid shooting for ‘Zero’ and they got that opportunity to interact with him for a while on Twitter with his occasional feature #AskSRK. SRK is always known for his witty replies in his interviews and his trademark responses were too many during the brief session. One of them had a dream that the actor was expecting his fourth child and the answer to that was the best of the lot. He quipped that he needed to save AbRam’s clothes in case the dream becomes true. The session had some other gems, including saying he just woke up (at 10 pm) and was in the ‘coffee phase’ at the moment, blushing when praised about his eyes and saying such days haven’t come that he has to wish footballer Lionel Messi.

Vishwanathan Anand loses to Fabiano Caruana in Norway Chess

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Rafa Nadal recovers after dropping first set to march into semi-finals

Roger Federer hasn’t thanked me for beating Rafael Nadal at Roland Garros in 2009, jokes Robin Soderling

New Delhi: Former world champion Viswanathan Anand went down fighting against Fabiano Caruana of United States in the eighth and penultimate round to slip to fifth spot in the Altibox Norway Chess tournament in Stavanger. After jumping to joint lead following a crushing victory over Maxime Vachier-Lagrave of France, Anand could not repeat the magic and Caruana deserved all the credit for taking chances. The American started with his pet Petroff defense against the

King pawn and Anand went for a solid system that was akin to the exchange variation in the French defense. Early in the middle game, Caruana fearlessly pushed his king side pawns and then accepted doubled pawns in the middle of the board. The position remained complicated and Anand decided to give an exchange sacrifice to liven things up. However, Caruana was again up to the task in managing complications better and his queen and rook proved superior to Anand’s queen and bishop in the end.

Paris : Robin Soderling, who beat Rafael Nadal in a four-set last-16 match nine years ago, joked on Thursday that he was still waiting for Roger Federer to thank him for allowing the Swiss to win the 2009 French Open title. Soderling not only beat the then four-time champion, but became the first man to do so at Roland Garros, ending Nadal’s 31-match unbeaten streak in Paris. As a result of that, the Swede Soderling managed to make it to the final, where he eventually went down to Federer, who completed his career Grand Slam. Speaking at

the ongoing Roland Garros on Thursday, Soderling, whose career came to an abrupt end in 2011 after being diagnosed with mononucleosis, said, “No, he hasn’t thanked me. I’m still waiting. When he saw I beat Rafa, I think he was a little bit happy, of course. But maybe he could have beat him in the finals. Who knows?” Soderling said that Federer, who has skipped the clay-court season for the last two years, would still be playing at Roland Garros if that title was missing from his glittering Grand Slam collection, which has now reached 20.

Paris : Rafael Nadal lost his first set at the French Open since 2015 but that blip did not prevent the 10-times champion from marching into the semi-finals with a 4-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 victory over Diego Schwartzman in their rain-delayed match on Thursday. The world number one had looked out of sorts in damp conditions on Wednesday as Schwartzman bombarded him with winners to cause him all sorts of problems, with the Argentine leading by a set and a break when the players were first called off court due to rain. Upon resumption, the Spaniard gradually improved before rain brought an early end to the day with Nadal on the brink of winning the second set. It was a very different story

when the contest resumed on Thursday in drier conditions as Nadal won 12 of the first 13 points before cruising into the last four. The 16-times Grand Slam champion will face another Argentine, fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro, for a place in Sunday’s final. “It was a very difficult match against a very good friend and a very good player. I think that after the rain interruption I played much better, I was more aggressive,” said Nadal. Despite entering the contest with a stupendous 83-2 win-loss record at Roland Garros, Nadal is known to suffer jitters early and Schwartzman capitalised on those nerves to break for a 2-1 lead in the opening set. Nadal broke straight back by raising his own level.

French Open 2018: Simona Halep stops Garbine Muguruza to reach third Paris final Simona Halep will look to win her maiden Grand Slam on Saturday in the final - in her third final appearance in Paris. Paris : Top seed Simona Halep reached her third French Open final when she stopped hardhitting Spaniard Garbine Muguruza in her tracks with a 6-1 6-4 semi-final victory on Thursday. The Romanian, who will also keep hold of the world number one ranking as a result of the victory, made a flying start and was 5-0 in quick time as Muguruza

made some wild errors. Muguruza ratcheted up the intensity in the second set and broke in the third game when a powerful return forced an error, only for Halep to fight her way back to level at 4-4. A marathon ninth game proved pivotal as Halep saved three break points to pile the pressure on the third seed. Halep then seized her chance, moving 0-40 ahead and

then raising her arms in triumph as Muguruza blazed a backhand long. She will face the winner of the all-American showdown between Sloane Stephens and Madison Keys in her fourth Grand Slam final. Halep has been beaten in all of her previous major final appearances, including at Roland Garros last year by Jelena Ostapenko.

Signs of impending cave-ins appear where roads were dug up AHMEDABAD: It looks like all the roads dug up in the past are all set to turn into wounds during the monsoon. Two more sinkholes appeared on Wednesday, at Idli Crossroads in Maninagar (west) and another on Danilimda Road, on Wednesday afternoon. Locals said that both these roads had been dug up repeatedly over the last seven months for repair of civic lines and to lay cables. A senior Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) engineer said that the contractors had not allowed

the soil to properly get compacted before laying the roads. Earlier, a small hole that had appeared outside the Commercial Tax office off Ashram Road, on the road to the riverfront, turned into a 15foot sinkhole. A similar situation can be expected at Danilimda and at Idli Crossroads. “How cohesive a soil is depends on the type of soil, the amount of moisture in it and proximity of previously disturbed soil. If the contractor had ignored these aspects, any leaking is sure to cause a cave-in,” said an AMC engineer.

Former GLDC MD has properties worth over Rs 100 crore, says ACB AHMEDABAD: For a man who had earned Rs 72 lakh in his entire service till now, the former MD of Gujarat Land Development Corporation (GLDC) K S Detroja has properties worth more than Rs 100 crore, primary evaluation by the state Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) suggests. Interestingly, seized legal documents show the face value of the properties he has amassed as only Rs 2 crore. The ACB arrested Detroja and also seized Rs 56 lakh cash from his office. Probe by the agency uncovered that Detroja owns a farmhouse with a lavish swimming

pool in Morbi, a 7-BHK penthouse on SG Road, 29 bigha agricultural land, a partnership in a petrol pump, and stakes in highway restaurants among other businesses. “The former MD of the land corporation bought a lavish 7BHK penthouse on SG Road for just Rs 7.50 lakh. According to the documents, the deal was done at just Rs 10 lakh, but the duty on it was paid by the builder himself,” said an ACB official. A government valuer has been roped in to ascertain the market value of the assets owned by Detroja so that the case of disproportionate assets (DA) can be proved in

the court. ACB had in April filed an FIR against Detroja after it found Rs 56.5 lakh cash in a search and seizure operation at the corporation’s headquarters in Gandhinagar. The agency officials had also found Rs 1.28 lakh cash from Detroja’s office, Rs 40.52 lakh from the office of joint director K C Parmar, Rs 9 lakh from that of assistant director M K Desai, Rs 5 lakh from finance officer S M Vaghela and Rs 70,000 from the company secretary S V Shah. ACB found gold ornaments worth Rs 63 lakh from a bank locker in Patan, belonging to Desai.

Cops to call senior citizens Four held for posing as cops, extortion randomly in security drive AHMEDABAD: In an action not mandated by the law, but within his informal power as the commissioner of police of Ahmedabad, A K Singh, makes time for a few minutes to call up senior citizens, to ask how they are. While Singh talks to them, the elderly on the other end puts the phone on speaker mode, so his or her family can listen to the conversation. “We know the power of our moral responsibilities. Every day, I meet two to four such senior citizens who only expect that I call them every day and say I’m with them. Making such calls is a daily practice and I chat with them while their children listen over the speaker phone and get the message to not mistreat their parents,” said Singh. He was speaking at the release of a report on senior citizen abuse in Ahmedabad, organized by Dignity Foundation, on Wednesday. “We have this informal power which has been very helpful and we’ve used it in a big way,” Singh added. The revelation indeed reflects on the plight of the elderly in the city. This is further

extrapolated by a study conducted by Dr Pradeep Prajapati, professor and head, Department of Social Work of Gujarat University. The study revealed the dark truths of most urban homes in the city, where the elderly are subjected to abuse of one or the other form by their children or caretakers. The study which was conducted among 2,480 senior citizens living within the limits of Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), stated that close to 40% of senior citizens were subjected to verbal abuse. In a few but worst cases, nearly 12% also fall prey to physical abuse. The second most common issue is also that of financial abuse, where children or caretakers harass their parents over property and other issues. “After I gave my flat to my son as a gift, upon his request, my wife and I were forced to leave the premises,” said Natwar Sanghvi, 70, who attended the function. “The court battle is an endless wait making me struggle in the last few years of my life.” Experts at Dignity Foundation have called for strengthening law as well as law enforcement, to address this issue.

AHMEDABAD: Four accused were arrested by the Ramol police station officials on Wednesday for extorting Rs 11,000 by impersonating as crime branch officials from a spa owner. The spa is located in Push Complex at Vastral.Police sources said Nilesh Jain, Shyam Joshi, Pratik and Vishal Rajgor, residents of Odhav and Narol respectively, accused spa owner Samir Khan of engaging in illegal activities like prostitution. “The accused also threatened to wrongly fix him in a rape case. They also warned him that if he did not comply to their demands, they will call media to defame him,” a police official said. Police officials said the deal was finally fixed at Rs 10,000, which was reduced from the initial amount of Rs 15,000 following negotiations. Bhavnagar: DGP transfers probe into Dalit youth murder to CID-Crime Rajkot : In a fresh twist in the murder probe of a Dalit youth at Timbi village in Bhavnagar district, Director General of Police Shivanand Jha has handed over the investigation to the CID-Crime after the father of the victim submitted a memorandum, saying he doesn’t have confidence in the ongoing probe conducted by Bhavnagar police. Pradeep Rathod, 21, was hacked to death while he was returning home from his farm on a horse on March 29. His father, Kalu Rathod, had alleged that Pradeep was killed by upper-caste men as they were against a Dalit owning and riding a horse. In his complaint to the police, he had named

one Natubha Darbhar of Timbi village and subsequently named two others — Ghoghubha Gohil and his brother Hitubha Gohil, both residents of nearby Piprali village, who had allegedly

threatened his son and warned of dire consequences if he did not sell off the horse. Initially, Bhavnagar police had detained the three accused and later four more persons, but no one

was arrested. Police said that all the seven even cleared the suspect detection system test. However, on May 13, police arrested one Munna Thaleisha, a Koli share-cropper, from Padana village in Dhandhuka taluka of Ahmedabad district, claiming that he had hacked Pradeep to death as the Dalit youth was harassing his wife. Police had also claimed that Thaleisha, who worked in a farm at neighbouring Piprali village, had even confessed to murdering Pradeep in a fit of rage. But the victim’s family rejected the police findings, claiming that neither Pradeep nor anybody else of his family knew Thaleisha’s family.
