Prime Minister Narendra Modi criticised Congress for questioning capabilities of the Army.

Congress is ‘bail gaadi’, stalwarts of party are out on bail: PM Modi

Jaipur: Launching a scathing attack on the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said the party is now being called a “bail gaadi” as several of its leaders are out on bail. “Several leaders who are called stalwarts of the Congress and former ministers are out on bail these days,” Modi said at a public rally in Jaipur, punning on the Hindi term for a bullock cart. He said people were well aware of the “intentions” of the Congress party and had started calling it a “bail gaadi”. Making an apparent reference to the surgical strike into Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) in 2016, he criticised the Congress for questioning the capabilities of the Army.

J&K: Teenage girl among 3 killed during clashes with security forces in Kulgam Srinagar: Three youth, including a teenage girl, were killed and five others wounded in security forces’ firing on protesters in Jammu and Kashmir’s southern Kulgam district on Saturday. The incident occurred amid rising tensions in the Valley ahead of the second death anniversary of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. Wani, along with two other militants was killed by the Army in Kokernag area of Anantnag on July 8, 2016, sparking off widespread unrest in Kashmir Valley and Chenab valley. The unrest prevailed for about six months during which more than 80 people were killed. The witnesses and police sources said that the security forces arrived in Hawoora village of Kulgam’s Redwani area early Saturday to conduct searches following reports about the presence of separatist militants. However, they were confronted by surging crowds which allegedly hurled rocks at their vehicles amid chants of ‘we want freedom’. The security forces fired live ammunition to quell the mob, injuring, at least, eight people.

“It is unfortunate that political opponents also committed a sin by raising questions on the capabilities of the Army. This has

never happened before and the people will not forgive those who are doing this kind of politics,” he said. The Prime

Minister also said that his government had resolved the issue of one rank, one pension for defence personnel. Appreciating the work of Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, PM Modi said that she had changed the work culture in the state. In this context, he took another dig at the opposition in the state, stating that, “There are some people who will never appreciate good work done, be it the Centre or Rajasthan Chief Minister Raje ji. Everyone must see the happiness of the beneficiaries here. There is a class that gets irritated with Prime Minister Modi’s name and his work.” “Never forget what the previous government left in Rajasthan,” he added.

Rahul Gandhi hits out at BJP over lynchings, links incidents to ‘politics of hatred’

New Delhi : Breaking his silence on the spate of mob lynchings across the country, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, in a veiled dig at the BJP, said the incidents were a direct consequence of politics of hatred and communal polarisation, which was damaging the social fabric of the country. Calling the brutal lynchings ‘sickening’, Gandhi said, “The politics of hatred and

communal polarisation is irreparably damaging our social fabric. The brutal lynchings across India…are the direct consequence of that kind of politics.” The Congress chief’s reaction comes at a time when Union minister Jayant Sinha has come under severe criticism for felicitating eight men convicted for the lynching of cattle trader Alimuddin Ansari on June 29 last year.

When there is too much Indian history to remember

One of the great challenges with Indian history is that there is just so much of it. Not only is there an abundance of material—millions of manuscripts, thousands of inscriptions, hundreds of buildings, dozens of tombs—but also an abundance of possible frameworks and approaches to interpret this material. Complicating all this further is the third dimension that is always germane to the study of anything Indian—the “local”. For the sake of argument, imagine that we’ve just discovered two documents in a library somewhere in New Delhi. Both are medieval documents that deal with, say, land revenue. Let us say that one document is from medieval Bengal and the other from medieval Tamil Nadu. They might seem very similar. But, in fact, they could well be drafted in two entirely different languages, using two entirely different systems of land assessment and prepared by two entirely different regimes functioning in two entirely different economic environments. One could be a Hindu kingdom in a state of drought. And the other could be a Muslim one in a state of war. So much so that a scholar’s ability to make complete sense of one of these documents is no guarantee of the person’s ability to make sense of the other. Indeed, and this might sound like a question in an MBA entrance exam, you will probably need at least four historians to make sense of these two findings. A historian each for medieval Bengal and medieval Tamil Nadu. A third historian who can take the work of the previous two and situate it within a broader medieval Indian canvas. And, finally, a fourth historian who will try and find out how these two documents landed up in the same archive in New Delhi. But what does this densely interconnected framework of ideas, perspectives, specializations and dependencies mean for public history in India? When faced with such an abundance of historical narratives, the general responses fall into two broad tendencies. Let me explain both with an example. The first tendency is to reduce all history into a master national historical narrative. This narrative includes, respectively, ancient India, a stream of incursions from the north-west, classical India, Muslim invasions, Mughals, Marathas and others, British and others, freedom struggle, independence, Partition, M.K. Gandhi, elections, Jawaharlal Nehru, Emergency, various wars, a compulsory chapter on dams, before petering out into brief looks at modern history. Setting aside the ‘Delhi-centredness’ of such a telling, there are at least two other problems with such a master narrative. First, it creates a sort of mongrel history that in seeking to create history for everybody ends up creating a history for nobody.

This is good enough for Shahid as well as for the film as the makers do not want an anxious actor on the set.

Shahid Kapoor happy with Arjun Reddy Mumbai shoot

New Delhi : The ultimate bad boy of Bollywood, Sanjay Dutt has a lot going on presently. From his recently released biopic Sanju to his upcoming movie called Saheb, Biwi Aur Gangster 3, the actor’s star is on the rise. While his biopic is certainly smashing the box office figures with its invincible numbers, his own feature films have hardly met the same fate. Here is a look at the figures of Dutt’s last five movies. Sanjay Dutt was last seen in Omung Kumar’s Bhoomi. The movie featured Dutt as the father of Aditi Rao Hydari’s character. The film, based on the father-daughter relationship, was only able to mint Rs 10.63 crore at the box office. The Emraan Hashmi starrer saw Dutt in the role of a cop called Ashok Kale. The movie also featured Neha Dhupia, Angad Bedi, Randeep Hooda and Kangana Ranaut in pivotal roles. It made a lifetime collection of Rs 19.47 crore. Shot both in Telugu and Hindi, the Apoorva Lakhia movie Zanjeer starred Ram Charan, Priyanka Chopra and Sanjay Dutt in significant roles. Zanjeer managed to collect a small amount of Rs 15.19 crore at BO.

Mumbai : The Telugu original Arjun Reddy was shot in scenic locations of Italy, parts of Germany, and hill-stations like Dehradun, apart from Rishikesh and Hyderabad. But for the Hindi remake, starring Shahid Kapoor who essays the role of a medical student, originally played by Vijay Deverakonda, director Sandeep Vanga has set up the initial premises for the film in Mumbai. And the Udta Punjab actor is keen that the

Mumbai : Ever since Saif Ali Khan made it official that a script for the sequel of Go Goa Gone is ready, sister and actor Soha Ali Khan, who played a cameo in the first part, is keen to do an extended role in the sequel. The film not only stars Saif Ali Khan in the extended role of Boris but also has Soha’s husband Kunal Kemmu. Soha and Kunal have earlier worked together in Dhoondte Reh Jaoge and later in 99. Out of which, the latter was also directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK who directed Go Goa Gone. “One is not sure if there is a role long enough for Soha in the film which is a sequel to India’s first zombie comedy.

But, Soha is keen to do a comedy film now. Go Goa Gone, made at a tight budget, made Rs 26 crores at the box office five years ago and it is worthy of a sequel,” says a trade source. Go Goa Gone also starred comedian -actor Vir Das, Anand Tiwari, and Puja Gupta and was produced by Saif, Dinesh Vijan and Eros Entertainment. Now that Saif and Dinesh have parted ways at Illuminati Films, it will be interesting to see if the sequel gets them back together. Soha, in the meantime, is also producing the Ram Jethmalani biopic along with husband Kunal and Ronnie Screwvala, which is to be directed by Hansal Mehta.

film is first being shot in the city. “His wife, Mira, is expecting their second child. So rather than rushing back to her when she is delivering, Shahid is keen to get the Mumbai portions shot first as it makes it easy for him to be around his wife. The makers do not have any issue with that. This is good enough for Shahid as well as for the film as the makers do not want an anxious actor on the set,” inform our sources.

Taapsee Pannu makes a price hike Mumbai : She made her Bollywood debut with Chashme Baddoor and went on to deliver an exceptional performance in Pink. And since then, there has been no looking back for Taapsee Pannu. The actress is being paired with Amitabh Bachchan again for Badla and is also working with his son Abhishek Bachchan in Manmarziyan. Now, with a steady line up of hits and upcoming films, the actress has realised that it is a time for a price rise. “Actresses will only lower their price if the project really demands so. If it is a big-budgeted project, no star will reduce their price, but instead, will be hoping to be paid better than the asking rate. Even though her Dil Junglee did not do well, she has Mulk coming up after Soorma releases. Also, one has to look at her price down south. She commands a hefty price and is now asking the kind of money she deserves because of what she brings to the table,” explains a trade source. Taapsee also has a film coming up called Tadka, directed by Prakash Raj. However, the release has been delayed due to a dispute between the makers and the financers.

Kevin Anderson keeps African Wimbledon hopes alive

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Alex Hales’ fifty spurs England to victory in second T20I, series level at 1-1

London : It used to be said Andy Murray required broad shoulders to carry British hopes at Wimbledon but spare a thought for Kevin Anderson — a lone standard bearer for a whole continent. The 32-yearold was one of only two players from the vast African continent to start in the men’s singles at the grasscourt Grand Slam this year — the other being Tunisian veteran Malek Jaziri who lost in the first round. In the women’s draw, Africa’s sole representative, Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur, won a round but Anderson, now based in the United States, has, as

usual, been flying solo since. He is doing a fine job too and on Monday he will face charismatic Frenchman Gael Monfils for a place in his first Wimbledon quarter-final at the 10th time of asking. At Flushing Meadows last September Anderson became the first African to reach a Grand Slam singles final since fellow South African Kevin Curran played Boris Becker at Wimbledon in 1985. He has carried that form into this year and in a 6-3 7-5 7-5 defeat of experienced German Philipp Kohlschreiber on Friday he looked capable of pushing deep into the second week.

Cardiff : Alex Hales smashed an unbeaten fifty to help England beat India by five wickets in the second T20I at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff on Thursday and level the series 1-1. After being thrashed in the first match at Old Trafford, it was a spirited performance by the Three Lions as they chased down a target of 149 in a thrilling last over finish. Earlier, India were put into bat first and on a track which was not a flat deck. Adil Rashid and David Willey’s fine bowling performance restricted the Indians to 148/5 in 20 overs. In reply, England rode on Alex Hales’ unbeaten 58 off 41 balls to secure their fifth win at Cardiff, most by a team in any venue in T20I. As a result, India’s run of seven successive wins

also comes to a grinding halt. England skipper Eoin Morgan won the toss and put India into bat first. However, the visitors failed to get off to a good start as England tied down both the openers and dismissed them early. With KL Rahul’s dismissal, India were tottering at 22/3. But Virat Kohli, who top scored with 48 struck a 50-run stand with Suresh Raina which put India on a respectable position. But India lost the momentum once Raina departed. It seemed like 120 would be a difficult task but late strikes by MS Dhoni and Hardik Pandya ensured India secure a respectable total on the board. 22 runs came off the last over as India ended with 148/5. 148/5 is the second-lowest total made by India batting all 20 overs.

England did their homework on Kuldeep Yadav and reaped rewards, says Virat Kohli

Cardiff : England beat India by five wickets in the second T20I at Cardiff to level the series 1-1. Alex Hales emerged as the star for the home team as England chased down a target of 149 in a nailbiting finish. 12 runs were required off the last over as Hales smashed a six and a four to help his side romp home with two balls to spare. For team India, it was a bad day at the office as their batsmen and bowlers failed to click in unison which resulted in their first loss after seven successive games. Skipper Virat Kohli also highlighted the failure at the top of the order and complimented the opposition for tackling the wrist

spinners. Stating that England were the better team on the day, Kohli complemented Morgan and his men for doing their homework right. Speaking at the post-match presentation Kohli said, “When you lose 3 wickets in the first 6 overs for 30 runs it’s difficult to come back. I thought a partnership would get us to 145, and that would have been competitive. England made good use of the wicket which had some extra bounce. We were pushed back initally in the first six.” “Our powerplay was not good enough, and the score, in the end, reflects that. You do consider everything into account, like the pitch, etc.

Wimbledon 2018: Serena Williams on a roll as she roars into last 16 London : Seven-times champion Serena Williams moved ominously into the last 16 at Wimbledon when she recovered from a sluggish start to beat France’s Kristina Mladenovic 7-5 7-6(1) on Friday. The American, seeded 25, looked sluggish initially and trailed 5-3 but the 36-year-old flicked the switch and reeled off six games in a row as Mladenovic wilted in the heat. To her credit Mladenovic recovered her poise and had a chance to break the Williams serve at 4-4 in

the second set. Williams slammed the door shut though and piled on the pressure when Mladenovic served at 5-6. Mladenovic saved one match point with a graceful forehand winner and forced a tiebreak but there was no stopping Williams as she steamed through it like an express train. She brought up another match point with a 12th ace and finished it off with her 13th. Williams has now won 17 consecutive matches at Wimbledon including the 2015 and 2016 titles.

She missed last year’s tournament because she was pregnant with daughter Alexis Olympia. It proved to be seventh-time lucky for Karolina Pliskova as she avoided joining Wimbledon’s cull of seeds to reach the fourth round with a 3-6 7-6(3) 6-1 win over Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu on Friday. The Czech appeared to be in danger of becoming the ninth top10 seed to fall before the last 16 when Buzarnescu bagged the first set and kept Pliskova guessing in

Bengaluru: Global trade tensions and rising oil prices are expected to weaken India’s rupee over the next year, a Reuters poll has found, dragging the currency closer to the record low hit last week against the dollar. While economic growth has picked up and India has retained its spot as the fastest growing major economy this year, the rupee hit an all-time low of 69.09 per dollar last week and is the worstperforming currency in Asia this year. The rupee, already down more than 7 per cent this year, has been pressured by a selloff in emerging markets driven by the daily escalation in global trade tensions and on worries of a widening current account deficit from the rising price of oil, India’s biggest import item. In the poll of 45 strategists taken July 2-5, the rupee was forecast to weaken to 68.90 per dollar by June 2019, slightly down from Wednesday’s close of 68.69. Just last month, the rupee was expected to have strengthened in a

year’s time. “We are pretty bearish (on the rupee) at this moment, given all the circumstances combined. Not only high oil prices but also the trade war that has been taking off,” said Hugo Erken, senior economist at Rabobank. “So, although India has a large internal market, and I still think the Indian recovery will last, the external pressure is really building at the moment. This is not good for the Indian currency.” What has changed over the past month is that the prospect of a global trade war has increased and oil prices have risen sharply. US crude futures are up 13 per cent since June 1 and were trading near a 3-1/2-year high on Wednesday. “India is obviously one of those countries with higher exposure to commodities, especially oil imports, dragging the current account to a deeper stretch going forward and this is basically negative for INR,” said Prakash Sakpal, economist at ING, who has the most pessimistic 12-month call of 72.80.

Hardik Patel, Alpesh Thakor & Jignesh Mevani booked over ‘raid’ at woman’s house Ahmedabad : Patidar quota agitation leader Hardik Patel and Gujarat MLAs Alpesh Thakor and Jignesh Mevani were booked by police on trespass and other charges after allegedly leading a “raid” at a house where they claimed that liquor was illegally stored, an official said on Saturday. Thakor, a Congress MLA, along with independent legislator Mevani and Patel, on Thursday “raided” the house of a woman, identified Kanchanben Makwana, with over a dozen supporters claiming they wanted to expose the alleged “liquor den” operating there. The house is located near the office of Gandhinagar Superintendent of Police. Makwana filed a complaint at the Gandhinagar Sector 21 police station. The complainant said the trio and their supporters entered her house when no male member was present there. “They even planted two pouches of country-made liquor there to prove her house was a liquor den,” Makwana was quoted as saying by inspector V N Yadav.

“Makwana, in her complaint, said she does not sell liquor and the two pouches recovered from her house were planted by the people who entered her home,” Yadav said. He said an FIR was lodged against Thakor, Mevani and Patel besides over a dozen others under various section of the Indian Penal Code including for housetrespass after preparation for hurt, assault or wrongful restraint (452), intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of the peace (504), and intentionally giving false evidence (193 ). Yadav said no arrest has been made so far in the case.

Centre made party to bullet train land acquisition case in Gujarat High Court Ahmedabad : The Union government was on Friday added as a respondent to the petitions filed by four farmers in the Gujarat High Court, challenging the land acquisition process for the Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project. A division bench of Chief Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice V M Pancholi made the Union Rural Development Ministry a respondent, as demanded by the lawyer of the National High Speed Rail Corporation Limited (NHSRCL). The NHSRCL lawyer said the Centre should be made a party as the farmers’ main contention is that it is the Centre and not the state which can initiate land acquisition. Assistant Solicitor General of India Devang Vyas supported this view. On the direction of the high court, petitioners’ lawyer Anand Yagnik submitted a draft amendment adding the Centre as a respondent. Other respondents are the Gujarat government, NHSRCL, and the district collector. Petitioners, who are from Surat district, have contended that as the project extends to more than one states (Gujarat and Maharashtra), the “appropriate government” which can acquire the land under the 2013 Land Acquisition Act is the Union government. The matter will be further heard on July 10. Another contention of the petitioners is that the market value of the land was not revised by the special land acquisition officer, as required under Section 26 of the 2013 Act. The petitioners have also challenged the Gujarat Amendment Act, 2016 which tweaked the 2013 law.

VHP alleges ‘conspiracy’ to create disturbance; targets Congress

London : British Prime Minister Theresa May secured a cabinet agreement on Friday for her plans to leave the European Union, overcoming rifts among her ministers to win support for “a business-friendly” proposal aimed at spurring stalled Brexit talks. After an hours-long meeting at her Chequers country residence, May seemed to have persuaded the most vocal Brexit campaigners in the cabinet to back her plan to press for “a free trade area for goods” with the EU and maintain close trade ties. The agreed proposal – which also says Britain’s large services sector will not have the current levels of access to EU markets – will not come soon enough for Brussels, which has been pressing May to come up with a detailed vision for future ties. But the hard-won compromise may yet fall flat with EU negotiators. By also committing to ending free movement of people, the supremacy of the European court and “vast” payments to the bloc, May could be accused of “cherry-picking” the best bits of the EU by Brussels officials, who are determined to send a strong signal to other countries not to follow Britain out of the door.

Mexico extradites key lieutenant of drug kingpin ‘El Chapo’ to US

Ahmedabad : The Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) said on Saturday mob lynching incidents and a spurt in antiDalit violence were part of a “conspiracy” to create disturbance in the country. The Congress, Maoists, “jihadists” and “a section of Church” are conspiring to create disaffection in the country, VHP joint general secretary Surendra Jain told reporters at Ahmedabad. “There is a conspiracy to create disturbance in the country,” he said, referring to a string of mob lynching incidents and a spurt in anti-Dalit violence, including the caste riot at Bhima-Koregaon in Pune district in January. “Those arrested in

the Bhima-Koregaon violence have said they wanted to create disturbance and a violent environment to destabilize the country. “I would blame the Congress, jihadists, Maoists and a section of Church for conspiring together. On social media, they presented a false interpretation of the Supreme Court order to incite violence,” he said. Jain was apparently referring to the apex court’s order diluting some provisions of the stringent Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. “A similar design can be seen behind a sudden spurt in incidents of mob lynching,” he said.

Trump govt drops charges against all inauguration protesters

Washington : The US government is dropping charges against the last 39 people accused of participating in a violent protest on the day of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. Friday’s motion to dismiss charges seemingly ends an 18-month saga that started with the Justice Department attempting to convict more than 190 people. More than 200 people were arrested after the protest, during which several store windows were broken and a parked limo set ablaze. Two group trials ended in defeats for the US attorney’s office, which was hindered by the fact that most protesters wore similar black clothing and covered their faces. The first trial ended with acquittals for all six defendants. A second trial for four people in May ended in acquittals on most charges and a hung jury on the rest. Two group trials ended in defeats for the US attorney’s office, which was hindered by the fact that most protesters wore similar black clothing and covered their faces.
