Sources said that both letters mentioned the Gadchiroli encounters, and threatened Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and his family members.

Maoists plan to kill Modi Rajiv Gandhi-style: Cops Mumbai: Maoists are planning to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi the way former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi was killed, the Pune police said, citing a letter allegedly seized from a person arrested two days back. Maharashtra chief minister Devendra Fadnavis said on Friday his office had received two letters, allegedly from Maoists threatening him and his family, after the recent anti-Naxal operations in Gadchiroli in which 39 Maoists were killed. The Pune police on Thursday told a court that a letter recovered from the Delhi house of Rona Wilson talks about the Maoists mulling a “Rajiv Gandhi-type incident” and suggesting

Modi should be targeted during his road shows. Wilson was among five people arrested from Mumbai, Nagpur and Delhi in connection with ‘Elgar Parishad’ held in December and the subsequent Bhima-Koregaon violence in the district. Rajiv Gandhi was killed by a woman suicide bomber during a public event in Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991. Fadnavis said “many such communications have been seized during the raids” and “the intelligence agencies are at work and probing into more links in this connection (the plot)”. Meanwhile, sources in Maharashtra’s home department said on Friday, the two letters addressed to Fadnavis, were received by the CM’s office a week ago.

Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis gets threat letters from Maoist organisations

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis received two threat letters, allegedly from Maoist organisations, sources in the state Home Department told PTI on Friday. The letters were received by the chief minister’s office a week ago and have been handed over

to the police, the sources added. “The letters came after the recent anti-Naxal operations in Gadchiroli, in which 39 Maoists were killed. The letters have been handed over to the police for further investigations,” the sources said. It also said that both letters mentioned the

Pranab Mukherjee at RSS event: ‘Divergent strands in public discourse must be recognised, talks solve problems’

New Delhi : Today, I’m here to share with you my understanding of the concepts of Nation, Nationalism and Patriotism in the context of India, that is Bharat. These three concepts are so closely intertwined that it is difficult to discuss any one of them in isolation. India was a state long before the concept of the European Nation State gained ground after the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. This model — of a defined territory, a single language, shared religion and a common enemy — is the model which led to the formation of various nation states in Europe. On the other hand Indian Nationalism emanated from “Universalism” the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah….Our national identity has emerged through a long drawn process of confluence, assimilation, and co-existence. The multiplicity in culture, faith and language is what makes India special. We derive our strength from tolerance. We accept and respect our pluralism. We celebrate our diversity…. Any attempt at defining our nationhood in terms of dogmas and identities of religion, region, hatred and intolerance will only lead to dilution of our national identity.

Gadchiroli encounters, and threatened Fadnavis and his family members. Reacting to the letters, Fadnavis told ANI, “Several facts have surfaced in the letter. Police have seized it and it will be presented before the court. A probe is underway to find more links.”

There is tension but confident Congress will take right decision, says Kumaraswamy

New Delhi : Karnataka Chief Minister and Janata Dal (Secular) leader H D Kumaraswamy on Friday admitted that there is tension with the alliance partner Congress over the allocation of portfolios but also expressed confidence that the grand old party would take the right decision to sort out the differences. “Yes, there is some tension there (in the Congress) but I am confident that the Congress leaders will take the right decision,” Kumaraswamy told news agency ANI. The CM’s remarks came a day after several senior Congress leaders held a meeting at former Water Resources Minister MB Patil’s home to discuss denial of Cabinet berths to the party. The meeting was attended by MLAs such as MTB Nagaraj, Satish Jharkiholi, and Roshan Baig. According to PTI, former minister HK Patil also held a similar meeting and demanded that the party high command take appropriate steps to address the grievances of the legislators. Congress leader D K Shivakumar on Friday said.

Pranab Mukherjee at RSS event: Sharmistha Mukherjee, the president of the Delhi Congress women’s wing, alleged the BJP and RSS’ dirty tricks departments were at work in full swing.

Sharmistha Mukherjee’s ‘told-you-so’ moment: Fake photo of Pranab Mukherjee at RSS event surfaces New Delhi : Sharmistha Mukherjee Thursday targeted the BJP and RSS for a viral photoshopped image of her father and former President Pranab Mukherjee doing the RSS’ salute along with its chief Mohan Bhagwat. Sharmistha, the president of the Delhi Congress women’s wing, alleged the right-wing organisations’ dirty tricks departments were at work in full swing. Her comments come a day after she warned her father that his visit to the RSS headquarters would fuel rumours and fake news. “See, this is exactly what I was fearing & warned my father about. Not even few hours have passed, but BJP/RSS dirty tricks dept is at work in full swing!” Sharmistha tweeted last night. The former President Thursday addressed a programme of the RSS as a chief guest, a decision which was questioned by leaders in the Congress. A day before the event, Sharmistha had warned her father that his speech will be forgotten,

but visuals of him will be circulated with fake statements. “By going to Nagpur, you are giving BJP/RSS full handle to plant false stories, spread falls rumours and make it somewhat believable. And this is just the beginning!” she had said. “The speech will be forgotten, visuals will remain and those will be circulated with fake statements.” Sharmistha, however, endorsed the view that every family has

opposing views, which is why she expressed her differences in public. “We are a democratic, argumentative family; and I learnt this from my father only,” she added. In his speech, Pranab Mukherjee said, “any attempt at defining our nationhood in terms of dogmas and identities of religion, region, hatred and intolerance will only lead to dilution of our national identity”.

Speaking at an event to mark the 10th anniversary of ‘Chennai Centre for China Studies’, the minister said, “One thing I want to assure here...we do not view our relations with China through the prism of China-Pakistan relations.”

No review of India’s stand on China-Pakistan Corridor: Sitharaman New Delhi: Union Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said India does not view its relations with China through the prism of China-Pakistan ties. She, however, ruled out the possibility of New Delhi reviewing its stand on CPEC project, a major stumbling block in SinoIndian relationship. Speaking at an event to mark the 10th anniversary of ‘Chennai Centre for China Studies’, the minister said, “One thing I want to assure here…we do not view our relations with China through the prism of China-Pakistan relations.”

The defence minister also mentioned that New Delhi is alert to the economic assistance provided by China to India’s neighbours and ramifications it could have for the country. She also brought up the issue of China-Pakistan

Economic Corridor (CPEC), and made it clear that India will not “entertain any thought” of reviewing its stand on it, as it concerned its sovereignty. “It is an issue of sovereignty, and we shall not entertain any thought (other than the stated Indian position) on that matter,” she was quoted as saying by PTI. The ambitious ChinaPakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is a combination of projects that are aimed at upgrading infrastructure in Pakistan and consolidating the economic ties between the two countries.

‘Plot to kill’ PM Modi: Maoists fighting a lost battle, says Rajnath Singh New Delhi : Amid Pune police’s claim of a plot to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday said the government was serious about the security of the PM. “We are always serious about the PM’s security. The Maoists are fighting a lost battle. They are now active only in 10 districts in the country,” Singh, who was in Jammu and Kashmir for a two-day visit, told reporters. Pune police on Thursday claimed to have seized an email from one of the five people arrested for having alleged Maoist links. The email, police said, hinted at plans to assassinate Modi in “another Rajiv Gandhi-type incident” by “targeting his roadshows”.

Amit Shah mocks Rahul Gandhi, says lucky that he got such opposition New Delhi : Mocking Rahul Gandhi as a “babua” (child), BJP president Amit Shah on Friday said the Congress chief keeps attacking the government for not doing one thing or another but should instead give account of the works of his three generations who ruled India for decades. Addressing workers of Jaipur Rural Lok Sabha constituency represented by Union minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Shah also took a jibe at the rival party over its “happiness” on the BJP’s defeat in bypolls and said he considered himself lucky that he has got such an opposition which was satisfied with victory in a few by-elections even though it was losing power in many states.

Hollywood star Jamie Foxx opens up about racism

Khattar’s net traps only the small fish

The Haryana government’s controversial decision to demand a third of all earnings of sportspersons from the state, including income generated from commercial endorsements and sponsorships, has led to reactions ranging from outright disbelief to disappointment. The state government has sought to justify the move on the ground that the money thus collected would be used for the promotion of sports and the development of sports infrastructure. The claim is also based on the argument that the sportspersons in question are taking time off their regular work with the government or service organisations like the Railways. Going by the initial expressions of outrage, it appears that those affected are mostly from traditional sports like wrestling, weightlifting, archery etc as the stars in these disciplines are mainly employed by the state government or entities controlled by it. The big fish like cricketers and top athletes will not come under the dragnet as the superstars are generally employed by leading brands. And they are the ones who pocket huge amounts by way of endorsements. For instance, India captain Virat Kohli is among the highest paid crickets in the world, earning Rs100 crore in just one deal with tyre manufacturer MRF. Their line up includes stars like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Yuvraj Singh and others. There is no doubt that the Khattar government’s decision will be most unpopular with sports people, but a patently bigger fight is on hand for the Modi government at the Centre in reigning in the sports administration industry, which has become a law unto itself. Union sports minister Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore says he is committed to a zero-tolerance policy towards politicians and bureaucrats who have made sports bodies their fiefdom. His ministry has drawn up a National Sports Code to reform the sports administration. The code stipulates that the age of office-bearers be capped at 70, while limiting the maximum tenure for an official to 12 years. But the Indian Olympic Association and other sports federations, to which the code should apply, are strongly opposed to the proposals. Those who are likely to be affected by the implementation of such a code are bound to step up their resistance and seek political patronage for their vested interests by enlisting the support of Opposition parties. While they do not have a cause against the code, they are likely to use moves such as the one by the BJP government in Haryana to build up a case of high-handedness against sportspersons and functionaries. The two instances must, however, be treated on their respective merits and it is incumbent on the part of all those who love sports in the country to checkmate the sports administrators, who simply cannot take the idea of being subjected to regulation.

Rafael Nadal steamrolls Juan Martin Del Potro, reaches 11th French Open final

Paris : Ruthless Rafael Nadal punished Juan Martin del Potro for missed opportunities as he reached his 11th French Open final with a 6-4 6-1 6-2 victory on Friday. Argentine Del Potro often had Nadal in trouble in a ferocious first set but paid heavily for failing to convert any of the six break points that came his way at 1-1 and 4-4. Once Nadal stole the opener with a break in the 10th game it was one-way traffic as he left Del Potro trailing in a cloud of Parisian clay dust to set up a final against

Dominic Thiem. “It was a tough first set with opportunities for Juan Martin, I am fortunate that I won the first set and then I played more aggressively,” Nadal, who equals Roger Federer’s feat of reaching the final of a single Slam 11 times, said on court as fans chanted “Viva Espana”. “I am very happy to be back in the final here at Roland Garros. For me it’s incredible. “Thiem beat me in Madrid this year and played with big power. I know I have to play my best tennis to have a chance on Sunday.

French Open 2018: Simona Halep hoping to be fourth-time lucky in finals Paris : World number one Simona Halep gets a fourth chance to finally win a Grand Slam title when she starts as favourite in the French Open final against American Sloane Stephens on Saturday. The 26-year-old has pedigree on clay, knows what it feels like to step out on Court Philippe Chatrier to contest the title match and holds a 5-2 winning record over Stephens. She is also playing arguably the best tennis of her career. There is one major sticking point though, Halep has always fallen just short when the big prizes have been tantalisingly within reach — twice in the French Open final and also in this year’s Australian Open final. Tenth seed Stephens, the first American not called Williams to reach the Roland Garros final since Jennifer Capriati in 2001, by contrast has a perfect record in Grand Slam finals having beaten friend Madison Keys to win last year’s U.S. Open. Romanian Halep’s

best chance came last year when she was a set and 3-0 ahead against unseeded Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, only to suffer a heartbreaking defeat. In Australia in January she ran out of gas on a steamy Melbourne

night against Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki but after a relatively comfortable passage through the Paris draw, she will be firing on all cylinders this time. While the match is a huge occasion for Stephens, seven-times French Open champion Chris Evert believes Halep needs it more. “I think tomorrow is a bigger moment for Simona Halep than it is for Sloane Stephens,” Evert, a Eurosport analyst, said on Friday.

New Zealand Women score 490 runs in ODI, thrash record for highest ever score New Delhi: New Zealand women created history after smashing a world record total of 490/4 against Ireland in the first ODI in Dublin on Friday. Their total is the highest score in men’s or women’s one-day internationals. Skipper Suzie Bates was the star performer scoring 151 runs in just 94 balls while Maddy Green complemented her with an equally entertaining 121 of 77 deliveries. Amelia Kerr’s cameo of 81 in 45 towards the end ensured that the White Ferns eclipse their

previous best of 455/5 against Pakistan in 1997. Incidentally, this is only the third instance when a 400-plus score has been made in women’s ODIs. Earlier, in the day New Zealand Women won the toss and opted to bat first. Opener Jess Watkin (62 from 59) along with Bates set the platform with a blistering opening stand of 172. While Watkin departed in the 19th over, Bates continued to pile on the misery until the 30th over when she was finally dismissed by Cara Murray for 151.

Her spectacular knock featured 24 boundaries and 2 sixes. However, Maddy Green and 17-year-old Amelia Kerr continued thereafter, plundering the Irish attack and milking boundaries at will. Green brought up her century in the 41st over and was dismissed soon after. But it was Kerr and wicketkeeper Bernadine Bezuidenhout who kept scoring at more than 10 runs per over. While at one point it seemed that the Ferns were poised to surpass the 500 runmark they ultimately fell short by just 10 runs.

international Traveling with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on secret mission to North Korea

Washington : It began with quiet words from State Department officials: Apply for a new passport immediately. You may soon be going to a country for which ordinary US passports are not valid for travel. Vague as it was, the instruction to two reporters last Friday left little doubt about our mystery destination: North Korea. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo had visited the capital, Pyongyang, in complete secrecy while he was still CIA chief in early April to set the stage for an unprecedented summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. Now, Washington was abuzz with rumors that he would be heading back soon to finalize details for the summit and bring back three U.S. citizens who had been held by North Korea for more than a year for alleged anti-state activities. It would turn out to be my second visit to the isolated, authoritarian nation.

US, Canada urge delay in vote on Vietnam’s cybersecurity bill, say law will stifle online dissent

Washington : The United States and Canada urged Vietnam on Friday to delay a vote on a proposed cybersecurity law, the U.S. Embassy said, amid widespread concern the law would cause economic harm and stifle online dissent in the communist-ruled country. Vietnamese lawmakers are set to vote on the proposed cybersecurity legislation this month. It aims to impose new legal requirements on internet companies and intensifies policing of online dissent. Facebook, Google and other global companies are pushing back hard against provisions outlined by the bill that would require them to store personal data locally on users in Vietnam and open offices in the country. “The United States and Canada urge Vietnam to delay the vote on the draft law to ensure it aligns with international standards,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement. “We find the draft cyber law … may present serious obstacles to Vietnam’s cybersecurity and digital innovation future, and may not be consistent with Vietnam’s international trade commitments,” it said. Trade and foreign investment are key to Vietnam’s export-driven economic growth, while its leaders have been promoting technology for growth.
