Congress must defend liberty, freedom of individuals, institutions: Sonia Gandhi

The BJP has nominated party president Amit Shah, Textiles Minister Smriti Irani and Congress turncoat Balwantsinh Rajput for the three seats. On its part, the Congress wants to see Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Sonia Gandhi, get re-elected from Gujarat SS News | Gandhinagar

For the first time in over two decades, there’s a contest for the Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat. This time, three Rajya Sabha seats are on offer. Since the BJP has 120 MLAs in the 182-member Assembly, it can easily win two of the three seats hands-down without a contest. The Congress, down from 57 legislators to 51 after six of its MLAs resigned from the party and the Assembly, is fighting to win the third seat. A candidate needs 45 votes to win. Now, for the candidates. The BJP has nominated its party president Amit Shah and Textiles Minister Smriti Irani, both of whom are expect-

ed to win without a contest. For the third seat, it has pitched former Congress leader and chief whip Balwantsinh Rajput. The Congress, on its part, is seeking to get Ahmed Patel, political secretary to Sonia Gandhi, elected for the fifth time from the state into the Upper House. The doors at the offices of the EC in Delhi seem to resemble more like a carousel at every passing moment. Leaders from both camps have

been stepping into the building in small groups and coming out to feed bytes to the waiting media scrum. The BJP delegation led by Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has just addressed the press for the second time. We have full faith in the poll panel, he said. P Chidambaram said the Election Commission must follow the precendent it set during the Haryana Rajya Sabha polls. “The EC must

Congress Rajya Sabha MP, Anand Sharma cited the time EC rejected a Congress MLA vote during the Rajya Sabha elections in Haryana and said the same principle should be applied in Gujarat. “One of our MLAs had mistakenly showed his vote in Haryana and his vote was rejected, same was done in Gujarat so it should be rejected,” he told reporters outside the Election Commission. Meanwhile, Ahmed Patel expressed confidence that he would win and requested the EC to begin counting. The BJP delegation after meeting the Election Commission officials is now briefing the

media. “The Congress has been leveling baseless allegations…they did not say anything in the morning. When they realised that they are going to lose, they began making these allegations. Requested EC to reject Congress’s plea as once votes are cast then nothing can be done. Process was fair,” Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. “Since morning Congress has been claiming victory, now with defeat staring in their face they are making desperate attempts,” he added. The Congress is holding a press conference. It claims that the Election Commission is being put under pressure by the BJP. On the allegation that two of its MLAs showed their ballot papers to Amit Shah before casting their vote, Congress leader Arjun Modhwadia said.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday said that the party must defend liberty and freedom of individuals and institutions. Speaking at the special CWC meeting in Delhi today, she also expressed concerns over the rise in cases of “self vigilantism”. Her remarks come on a day when the party petitioned the Election Commission for cancellation of two votes of its “disgruntled” MLAs during Rajya Sabha election in Gujarat. “Congress must always defend the liberty and freedom of individual and institutions. Anguished by assault on freedom;

self-appointed vigilantes are a threat to liberty and enemy of pluralism and diversity,” Gandhi said at the meeting. AICC in-charge of communication Randeep Surjewala also said that former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh expressed concerns during the meeting about India’s youth and peasantry as also multiple problems persisting post demonetisation and GST. Rahul Gandhi skipped the special meeting of the CWC on the 75th anniversary of Quit India movement as he is down with fever. The meeting discussed the contribution of the Congress in the movement.

BJP Haryana chief Subhash Barala on Tuesday said that Varnika Kundu, the woman who has accused Barala’s son Vikas Barala of stalking, was like his daughter. “BJP is supporter of women’s freedom and Varnika Kundu is like my daughter,” said Barala. “The action is being taken in the

printing can only be of one size. Therefore, where were the dyes of different sizes prepared for the purpose of printing the currency notes, whether within or outside the country?” Sibal questioned. In a statement, the party said the objectives of demonetisation mentioned by the Prime Minister have not been achieved. “We have been trying since Novem-

ber 2016 to figure out the real motive behind the sudden and secret move of the government,” it said. It added, “It is important to note that these notes are not counterfeit since they are all printed under the aegis of RBI and/or the Ministry of Finance, incorporating most of the security features published on the official website of RBI.”

Crisis manager in crisis: Ahmed Patel’s win or loss will affect his standing in Congress If the BJP manages to stymie Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Patel’s fifth term to the Rajya Sabha, it will perceptibly not just be Ahmed Patel’s who will stand defeated, but Sonia Gandhi also. A fierce battle, one where the prestige of Congress is at stake, is panning out in Gujarat, and the otherwise routine affair of Ahmed Patel’s election to Rajya Sabha has been turned into a duel between Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and BJP President Amit Shah. Since 2014, the Congress chief has seen a massive erosion in her political clout across India. As Gujarat goes into elections by the end of this year, Sonia and Rahul Gandhi will both be counting on Patel to play a pivotal role in guiding the Congress to — if not victory — then a face-saving performance. But if Shah succeeds in thwarting Patel from reaching the Rajya Sabha, it will be Sonia’s authority, and consequently Congress’ electoral heft in Gujarat that will suffer maximum damage. Patel’s own standing in the party will also be affected. This move also underlines BJP’s shrewd strategy on poll optics. The struggle to secure Patel’s seat is quite deliberately being presented as a contest between Shah and Sonia, a master stroke that instantly dehyphenates Sonia from being seen as a rival of worth to counter PM Narendra Modi. The unambiguous message is that she must best Shah before she can aim to topple Modi’s appeal. Meanwhile, undeterred, Gujarat BJP is targeting 150 seats in the state assembly. On the other hand, Congress has virtually come undone in the aftermath of the elections in five states in 2017. The unmitigated defeat in the UP elections is virtually unrecoverable, especially since Congress has seen a steady erosion of its support base. If Patel is defeated, it will only embolden BJP to prop up a candidate against Sonia Gandhi in the Raebareli constituency. Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, after the strong performance by Textiles minister Smriti Irani in 2014, very well understands that he cannot sit assured in hopes that the Amethi constituency is for him to lead, in perpetuity. The BJP has a total of 121 MLAs in the Gujarat Assembly and reportedly, the votes will be split between three leaders. 45 BJP MLAs will vote for Shah, the next set of 45 MLAs will vote for Irani and the remaining 31 MLAs will cast their vote for Balwantsinh Rajput, who would still need 14 other votes to win.

If you rationalise with CBFC, there wouldn’t be any problem: Ajay Agency | Mumbai

Bollywood stars like Aamir Khan and Nawazuddin Siddiqui might have expressed their displeasure with CBFC’s draconian and regressive style of functioning, but Bollywood actor Ajay Devgn’s experience tells him that there is actually “no problem” with the board that needs to be addressed. From banning a film for being “lady-oriented”, asking the removal of the word

“intercourse” from a movie’s trailer to demanding 48 cuts in a film after giving it an adult certificate, the Pahlaj Nihalani-led censor board has been unreasonable and hence has had many run-ins with Bollywood filmmakers and actors. But this does not resonate with actor-filmmaker Ajay Devgn, who believes that if filmmakers have logical conversations with the censor board, there will never be a

problem. When asked about CBFC’s bizarre ways, Ajay, whose Baadshaho is up for release next month, told reporters, “I really don’t know… The films that I produced and submitted to the censor board, I didn’t face any issue. I don’t think what’s the problem. I actually don’t think there’s any problem. I feel if you rationalise with them (CBFC) everything can be understood. At least that’s my experience.”

In spite of being adjudged Man of the Match for his fine show in the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo, Ravindra Jadeja ended the Test on a bad note as he was handed a one-match ban by the International Cricket Council (ICC) after accumulating six demerit points in a 24-month period. Jadeja, who bagged seven wickets and scored an unbeaten 70 runs, responded with a sarcastic tweet after the ban on him. “Hum sharif kya hue puri duniya hi badmash ho gayi,” he wrote. The incident took place on the final delivery of the 58th over of Sri Lanka’s second innings when Jadeja, after fielding off his own bowling, threw the ball back at the batsman who had not left his crease. The on-field umpires deemed the throwing “in a dangerous manner” as

it narrowly missed Dimuth Karunaratne. The charges were laid by on-field umpires Bruce Oxenford and Rod Tucker, third umpire Richard Illingworth and fourth umpire Ruchira Palliyaguruge. Tormented by blisters, illness and injuries, ultra-marathoner Samir Singh got to within 36 kilometres of his goal of running 10,000km in 100 days when pain and exhaustion beat him. Mr Singh, dubbed “The Faith Runner” and inevitably compared to Forrest Gump, spent

nearly three months running between Mumbai’s slums and business district using donated clothes and equipment, and living on just about Rs. 190 a day. At the end of his attempt on Sunday, the 5ft 7ins (170cm) running coach, who also suffered stomach problems and viral fever, weighed just

40 kilogrammes (88 pounds). Mr Singh started on April 29 in scorching heat, and has been running through the monsoon rains without skipping a day. He needed to clock 150km (93 miles) on the final day on Sunday, after falling behind schedule through illness. Nirmala Sheoran produced a forgettable performance in the women’s 400m semifinals to finish among the bottom trio as India’s disappointing show in the World Athletics Championships continued on the fourth day on Tuesday. The 22-year-old Nirmala clocked 53.07 seconds, well below her season’s as well as personal best of 51.28, as she finished seventh in semifinals heat number two

and 22nd overall out of total 24 competitors at the Olympic Stadium in London. Top two from each of the three semifinal heats and two fastest finishers from the remaining runners qualify for the final. When his cricket career came to an abrupt end, Sreesanth seemed to be going the way of others banned for their alleged role in match or spot-fixing — Mohammed Azharuddin, Ajay Jadeja, Ajay Sharma et al. Like them, he too succeeded in getting the BCCI-imposed

ban overturned by courts. In Sreesanth’s case, the Kerala High Court said that “when evidence is in the nature of circumstantial evidence, that evidence ought to have been appreciated as a whole. And when that is done it can be concluded that Sreesanth had no direct link to betting or match-fixing”. The BCCI had pointed to two sets of evidence gathered by the police: Audio recordings of a conversation between Sreesanth’s friend

Jiju Janardhanan and a bookie and a confession allegedly made by Sreesanth. The court rubbished the value of the said confession as the cricketer had stated that it was forced out of him. It added that the purported audio recording did not indicate Sreesanth’s direct role in the fixing. Even assuming he knew about the betting, the four-year ban already suffered was punishment enough, the court held.

Ahead of the third and final Test in the series, Ajinkya Rahane and Cheteshwar Pujara asked each other about their game plans, practice sessions, among other things. On being asked about remaining calm on the field, Rahane said, “I used to do yoga and meditation which has helped me a lot

in staying calm and composed on the field and making important decisions.” Pujara was asked about sledging during the match, to which he replied, “I did not used to sledge earlier but now I am learning to sledge as it is a crucial part of the game and you need to learn a little bit of that, but it should not be personal.” India lost three crucial wickets at 133 in the first innings of the second Test, on being asked about Rahane’s approach when he came out to bat, he replied,”I planned to take some time at the crease.

Gujarat police arrest former Maoist leader from Nagpur-bound train Agency | Nagpur

Gujarat police arrested a former central committee member of the banned CPI(Maoist) group near Nagpur on Tuesday morning. Tushar Kanti Bhattacharya – who was also in charge of the rebel outfit’s Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand and North Bihar divisions for several years – was returning from West Bengal on the Geetanjali Express when he was taken into custody. His wife, Nagpur University lecturer Soma Sen, said Bhattacharya had gone to visit his sister in Kol-

Meghe said Bhattacharya was allowed

to call him from Nagpur airport. “He said the Gujarat police are taking him to Surat, and he would be produced before the court tomorrow,” he added. Bhattacharya was earlier arrested by the Bihar police in September 2007 in connection with a four-decadeold Maoist raid on landlords at the historic Tappalapur village, now located in Telangana. He was lodged at the Cherlapally central prison in Hyderabad. After obtaining bail a couple of years ago, he moved into his wife’s house at Nagpur.
