Officers failed to act against Deoria shelter despite govt order: Yogi Aditynath

Deoria: The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has agreed that despite instructions from the state government in June 2017, officers in Deoria district did not act against a shelter home in Deoria town and it was only 10 days ago that a criminal case was filed against the woman who ran the shelter home. Police raided the Deoria shelter home on Sunday night and rescued 21 girls and three boys who

alleged of sexual and physical abuse at the shelter home. The UP government has also decided to recommend a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). At a late night press conference in Lucknow on Tuesday, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath admitted that the district administration in Deoria had to answer many questions. CM Yogi Adityanath also constituted a special investigation

Rahul Gandhi in Delhi High Court against reopening of his tax assessment

New Delhi : Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday challenged in the Delhi High Court the reopening of his 201112 assessment by the tax department for not disclosing that he was a director in Young Indian company, an accused in the National Herald misappropriation of assets case. A bench of Justices S Ravindra Bhat and A K Chawla listed the matter for further hearing on August 14, after Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Tushar Mehta opposed issuance of any interim

order by the court. The ASG, however, assured the bench that till the next date, no coercive step would be taken against Gandhi by the tax department. The assurance came after the bench asked the ASG what coercive steps would the tax department take in the matter. The court put the query to the ASG after the lawyers for Gandhi urged the bench to order that no coercive steps be taken in the matter till the next date. Gandhi’s lawyers were seeking an interim order from the court as the case related to the assessment is listed

team (SIT) to ensure there is no tampering of evidence till the central agency takes over. Adityanath held the previous governments responsible for the manner in which the NGO was being run, but also said the role of the local police will be probed. “Seeing the sin and laxity of the previous governments, all those who were responsible, and in order to make things crystal clear we have decided that

the entire incident will be handed over to the CBI,” he told reporters. He also stated that the boys who were rescued from the Deoria shelter home would be shifted to other child protection homes. The Deoria case surfaced on Sunday night when one of the girls escaped from the shelter home and complained to the police. The police found that 18 others were missing from Deoria.

Bihar Social Welfare Minister Manju Verma resigns over Muzaffarpur shelter rape case PATNA: Bihar’s Social Welfare minister Manju Verma resigned on Wednesday, bombarded by allegations that her husband has links to the Muzaffarpur shelter where over 30 girls, some as young as seven, were raped and tortured. NDTV had reported that call records confirm the minister’s husband was in touch with Brajesh Thakur, the man who ran the horror home, and 17 calls were exchanged between them this year The call records also establish that between October and May, the minister’s husband, Chandeshwar Verma, visited the shelter nine times, each time for several hours. The minister was called by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar today. After the meeting, which went on for over 30 minutes, she resigned. But Manju Verma went down defending her husband. “My husband was innocent yesterday, he is innocent today and will be proved innocent tomorrow,” she told reporters. “But I resigned

on moral grounds after media reports of call details revealed that my husband had spoken to Brajesh Thakur 17 times.” She also asserted that there was a “planned conspiracy” to target him. The role of the minister’s husband came under scrutiny when the wife of an arrested child protection officer demanded an investigation against him. Shibha Kumari, the wife of Muzaffarpur Child Protection Officer Ravi Roshan, alleged

that the minister’s husband was a frequent visitor at the shelter where girls were allegedly exploited for sex, forced to sleep naked and scalded with hot water. The police investigated the CDR or Call Data Records from three phones used by Brajesh Thakur, whose NGO run many homes and who is accused of sexually assaulting and beating the girls. It is still not clear whether Thakur spoke to the minister’s husband after the scandal broke out.

Swedish giant IKEA comes to India, set Indian-origin man pleads gulity to to open doors in Hyderabad tomorrow taking $2.5 million in bribes in US

Hyderabad: With its first store in India set to open tomorrow in Hyderabad, Swedish home furnishings major IKEA on Tuesday said it is looking to expand here at a faster pace as compared to elsewhere. The company which is looking to set up 25 stores in India by 2025 will also enter the e-commerce segment by next year, besides exploring small format stores as part of expansion plans in the country. IKEA had originally planned to open the first store in 2017. However, it was delayed and was scheduled for July 19 this year. The company again pushed it back to August 9 citing quality commitments. “We

want to be accessible and from tomorrow we will be accessible in Hyderabad. Now we will try our best to speed up our expansion to move quicker than normally we

do in IKEA,” IKEA Group CEO Jesper Brodin said here. After Hyderabad, IKEA’s second store would be in Mumbai next year followed by Bengaluru and Delhi-

NCR. The company’s first store in India comes more than five years after it received the government’s nod for its Rs 10,500 crore investment in the country in singlebrand retail. Out of the total outlay of Rs 10,500 crore, the company has so far invested Rs 4,500 crore on different projects. It has invested Rs 1,000 crore on the Hyderabad store alone, which would have a range of around 7,500 products. The store is spread over 13 acres and has a built-up area of 4 lakh sq ft. Bullish on the Indian market, IKEA India CEO Peter Betzel said the country’s population, demographic dividend and fast-growing economy offered a big potential.

Washington : An Indian-origin man has pleaded guilty to taking $2.5 million in bribes and kickbacks from companies seeking contracts to work on energy-saving projects in the US government buildings. Bhaskar Patel, 67, of Windermere, Florida, received the bribes and kickbacks when he served as a senior project manager for Schneider Electric Building Americas, based in Andover, Massachusetts. He was responsible for obtaining bids from subcontractors and recommending for selection the subcontractors that would be awarded a contract under an energy-saving project. The payments were associated with federal energy savings performance contracts issued to Schneider Electric by various federal agencies from June 6, 2011, to April 19,

2016. He pleaded guilty on Monday in federal court in Rutland to two felony charges, each carrying maximum penalties of 10 years in prison. He remains free on his personal recognizance pending a December 7 sentencing hearing. Judge Geoffrey Crawford said federal probation officials would conduct a pre-sentence investigation before he formally hands down a sentence for Patel. As part of a plea agreement, federal prosecutors filed a notice of forfeiture totalling $2,536,119 from Patel, VT Digger, a Vermont news portal, reported. The plea agreement states that prosecutors have agreed to reduce the forfeiture amount to USD 1.75 million if Patel pays USD 950,000 on or before his sentencing. He also faces fines of up to $5,072,238.38, or twice his ill-gotten gains.

Adultery law is worth a burial

It is the height of stupidity that a law that allows a man to ask his wife to have sex with another man can be justified as being in the interest of maintaining the sanctity of marriage. This is exactly what the law against adultery in the Indian Penal Code provides for. What the law, part of the colonial era IPC, says is completely revolting to common sense or any sense of propriety. It reads like this: “Whoever has sexual intercourse with a person who is and whom he knows or has reason to believe to be the wife of another man, without the consent or connivance of that man, such sexual intercourse not amounting to the offence of rape, is guilty of the offence of adultery.” By no stretch of imagination one can argue that this is in the interest of the institution of marriage, unless marriage is taken to mean only as the sweet will and pleasure of the husband. What about the wife? Does she not have a say in what her married life should be like? This is what a fivemember bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, hearing several petitions challenging the contentious Section 497 of the IPC, asked the government counsel, who argued that the law should be retained in the interest of protecting the institution of marriage. The court asked “what public good” the law served, as it provided that no offence would be deemed committed if the husband of a woman approved an adulterous relationship. The matter came before the bench as the court had referred the issue to a larger bench in January this year, when petitioners had challenged the law. It is indeed sickening that the government continues to argue in favour of these anachronistic dispositions when marriage is universally accepted as an equal partnership between the husband and wife. The government stand betrays the male chauvinistic mentality that is deeply ingrained in the distorted view of Indian traditions, which actually recognised women as the better half of man. In fact, the strong response from the court came when the government counsel requested that the judgement of foreign jurisdictions setting aside adultery as a criminal offence should not be taken into account as the social conditions prevalent in India were different. In fact, the entire adultery law is a bundle of contradictions. While the husband’s consent part makes it completely anti-woman, the provision that in an adulterous relationship, only the man is punishable even if the initiative was taken by the woman makes it anti-men as well. It would still be understandable if the government had argued in favour of making the laws gender-neutral, but asking for status quo can only be considered as a most retrograde move.

Considering the kind and number of movies Karan Johar actually has, only strong luck could help Siddy boy now. New Delhi : Sidharth Malhotra entered Bollywood with a bang! He was the next hot thing in ‘Student Of The Year’ and the journey continued with ‘Ek Villain’ and ‘Kapoor & Sons’. It however became difficult for the actor to sustain as his journey of giving backto-back flops began with ‘Baar Baar Dekho’, continued to ‘A Gentleman’, ‘Ittefaq’ and his last release ‘Aiyaary’, which was in the news for clashing with his ‘Brother’ Akshay Kumar’s film ‘Padman’. Although he has now bagged the biopic of Vikram Batra and ‘Shotgun Shaadi’, Mumbai Mirror has gone on to report that the actor is thinking of quitting his talent management company, which by the way handles all Dharma Productions’ talents, to find one which helps him find more movies. Considering the kind and number of movies Karan Johar actually has, only strong luck could help Siddy boy now, but that doesn’t seem to be in his favour either.

I am still struggling with ‘postpartum emotions’, says Serena Williams

New York: Serena Williams was in a “funk” last week because she felt her hectic schedule was not leaving her enough time to care for her 11-month old daughter, the 23-time Grand Slam champion said in a social media post on Monday. The 36-year-old American pulled out of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Saturday citing “personal issues”, days after she was beaten 6-1, 6-0 by Johanna Konta in the first round of the Silicon Valley Classic, the most lopsided defeat of her career. “Last week was not easy for me. Not only was I accepting some tough personal

stuff, but I just was in a funk,” Williams said in an Instagram post. “Mostly, I felt like I was not a good mom,” “I read several articles that said postpartum emotions can last up to 3 years if not dealt with. I like communication best. Talking things through with my mom, my sisters, my friends let me know that my feelings are totally normal. “It’s totally normal to feel like I’m not doing enough for my baby.” Williams said feeling overwhelmed was a normal part of being a new mother and encouraged anyone struggling through a rough patch to stay positive.

London: France World Cup star Paul Pogba is determined to end his fractious relationship with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho and move to Barcelona, according to British media reports on Wednesday. The 25-yearold -- who scored in the 4-2 World Cup final win over Croatia -- has agreed terms with Barcelona for a deal worth £89.5 million ($115 million, 100 million euros) over five years, according to the Daily Mail. The reported agreement would see him pick up £346,000 a week, almost double what he earns at United. The Sun

claims the former Juventus star -- who joined United for a then world-record fee of £89 million in 2016 -has demanded the Premier League side increase his wages from £180,000 to £380,000 a week so he is paid almost on a par with Chilean star Alexis Sanchez, otherwise he will leave.United, though, would be most reluctant to sell him, with the Daily Mail reporting they have already rejected a bid by Barcelona of £44.5 million plus Colombian central defender Yerry Mina and Portuguese midfielder Andre Gomes.

St. Louis : Over a 23-year professional career there is little in the golf world Tiger Woods has not seen or courses he has not played. But this week will provide a rare new experience for the 42-year-old as he prepares for the 100th PGA Championship and his first competitive round at a steamy Bellerive Country Club. Named for Louis St. Ange De Bellerive, the last French Governor in North America, the club was founded in 1897 and they have been playing the “Green Monster of Ladue” at its current location since 1960. A visit to Bellerive does not trigger happy memories for Woods, though, with injury and tragedy having conspired to keep him from challenging the leafy parkland course. In 2008 when Bellerive hosted the BMW Championship Woods was

dealing with knee injuries and in 2001 the World Golf Championship was cancelled due to the events of 9/11, Woods recalling how a contemplative 17-hour drive home to Florida changed his outlook on the sport and life. “I literally haven’t set foot on this golf course since that week in 2001,” said Woods, following a rain interrupted practice round on Tuesday. “Didn’t get up here preBritish Open, and yesterday I took the day off. “So today we only got in five holes and didn’t really get a chance to see a whole lot. “I’ll have to do some more homework tomorrow and get a good feel for what’s going on for the rest of the week. “I was recovering from a surgery in 2008 and we all know what happened in 2001.”

Clamour grows for Cheteshwar Pujara’s inclusion in Lord’s Test New Delhi: Cheteshwar Pujara’s ability to wear down bowlers with his obdurate defence should earn him a place in India’s playing XI for the second Test against England, according to several former players. Skipper Virat Kohli’s sublime display in the series opener failed to gloss over India’s top order frailties with the trio of Shikhar Dhawan, Murali Vijay and KL Rahul making a combined 82 in their 31-run loss in the Edgbaston Test. Pujara may not have set alight county cricket with his Yorkshire stint

but many believe the time he spent in the country gives him a distinct advantage over his team mates. “When batsmen are struggling with the moving ball, it might be a good idea to induct Cheteshwar Pujara into the side,” former Test player Mohinder Amarnath wrote in a column that appeared in Wednesday’s Times of India newspaper. “I know he is not in great form but he has the ability to occupy the crease and just needs time in the middle to rediscover his touch,” added the 69-Test veteran whose own

gutsy batting remains an inspiration for the likes of Pujara. His former team mate Sunil Gavaskar also sees sense in bringing back Pujara for the Lord’s Test beginning on Thursday. “I will play one more batsman at Lord’s in the form of Pujara,” Gavaskar told India Today television channel. “He has the technique and patience required for a Test match. Whose place he’ll take will depend on the pitch. If the wicket isn’t that green then I will play him in place of (pacer) Umesh Yadav and stay with (all-rounder) Hardik Pandya.”

Gujarat HC quashes rape FIR against former BJP MLA Jayanti Bhanushali Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court on Tuesday quashed the FIR filed against BJP leader Jayanti Bhanushali in which he had been accused of raping a 21-year-old woman from Surat multiple times. The court’s decision to quash the FIR against the former BJP MLA from Abdasa came after the woman complainant submitted an affidavit in the court giving her consent to drop the rape case against Bhanushali and recorded her statement before the police. Last week, the court had directed the police to verify an affidavit submitted by the 21-year-old woman, saying that “dispute” between her and Bhanushali was “amicably resolved as misunderstanding on both the sides got cleared”. “Therefore, now there is no any grievance between us and therefore, I have no objection if the FIR is quashed,” the woman’s affidavit stated. The woman, who had appeared in the court in a burqa to submit the affidavit, had said, “Because of some misunderstanding and in a heat of moment, I had filed the (rape) case… but looking at my future and young age, I would like to have harmonious atmosphere in the

society, in my family and also in my future. Therefore, now I don’t want to proceed in the present matter. I don’t have objection to the quashing of the FIR.” During the hearing, public prosecutor Mitesh Amin told the court that the petitioner Bhanushali, who had filed a petition in the High Court seeking quashing of the rape FIR against him, should have filed a fresh petition as his petition was about quashing the FIR, but not on the ground of compromise. Following a brief hearing, Bhanushali’s lawyer P B Khandheria said, a two line amendment was filed in the court which was granted. Justice P P Bhatt quashed the FIR after he was handed a verification report from the Surat police. On July 19, Surat police had filed an FIR against Bhanushli after the 21-year-old woman lodged a complaint with the city’s police commissioner, accusing the BJP leader of raping her on several occasions between November 2017 and March 2018 on the pretext of getting her admission in a reputed fashion design institute. In the wake of the allegation, the 53-year-old leader had last month resigned from the post of the Gujarat BJP vice- president.

international US reimposes sanctions on Iran, Hassan Rouhani accuses Trump of launching ‘psychological warfare’

New Delhi : After the US reimposed sanctions on Iran, Iranians voiced anger, fear and defiance Tuesday with their leaders dismissing any offer of talks with Donald Trump. The US President reimposed the sanctions on Iran today, which target access to US banknotes and key industries such as cars and carpets. But these were unlikely to cause immediate economic turmoil because Iran’s markets were actually relatively buoyant, with the rial strengthening by 20 per cent since Sunday after the government relaxed foreign exchange rules and allowed unlimited, tax-free gold and currency imports, reported AFP. Earlier today, Trump wrote in an early morning tweet, “The Iran sanctions have officially been cast. These are the most biting sanctions ever imposed, and in November they ratchet up to yet another level.” He said the sanctions were the “most biting ever” as he warned other countries from doing business with Tehran.

A day later the Canadian Foreign Ministry tweeted seeking the immediate release of all civil society and women’s rights activists: The tweet did not go down well with the government in Saudi Arabia. On Monday, Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir criticized Canada’s statements, and accused the country of “blatant interference in the Kingdom’s domestic affairs, against basic international norms and all international protocols”. The Saudi Arabia government said that Freeland’s tweet was a “major, unacceptable affront to the Kingdom’s laws and judicial process, as well as a violation of the Kingdom’s sovereignty.
