High net worth individuals leaving country in fear of govt agencies, claims Prakash Ambedkar New Delhi : Bharip Bahujan Mahasangha (BBM) leader Prakash Ambedkar claimed that thousands of High Net Worth Individuals (HNWI) have left the country in the past four years due to constant harassment by government agencies, taking away about $19 billion from the foreign exchange reserve of the country. Addressing a press conference in Nagpur on Saturday, Ambedkar claimed that since 2015 over 90,000 HNWIs, each having assets worth more than Rs 10 crore, have left the country, that has “depleted the foreign exchange reserve from $399 billion in March to $380 billion in June.” “This is due to the constant threat of harassment by enforcement agencies like the income tax department. And this also is one of the prime reasons for fall of rupee against dollar,” Ambedkar added. Ambedkar further said, “external debt has risen from $405 billion to $529 billion at present. The financial cover for import in March was over 11 months, it is down to only 5 months now (unconfirmed). This has given rise to the possibility of 1990-like precarious balance of payment situation,” Ambedkar claimed, adding, “the Hindu middle class, which wants the Modi government to come back to power in 2019, needs to take a hard look at this scenario.”

If Article 35A wrong, so is J&K’s Amit Shah claims will return accession to India, says Abdullah in 2019 with larger majority

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government is working for “making India” whereas the Congress is working for “breaking India”, BJP president Amit Shah said on Saturday, asserting that his party will return to power in 2019 with a majority bigger than what it got in 2014. A slogan of “Ajey BJP” (Invincible BJP) was adopted at the meeting of the party’s national office bearers and also presidents of its state units. Launching a blistering attack on the Opposition in his inaugural address at the party’s two-day national executive meeting, he said the proposed mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) of the BJP’s rivals is an illusion and myth, and will make no difference to its fortunes. Mr Shah sought to build a narrative about his party around the theme of development, especially targeting the poor, and nationalism, while painting the Opposition as those sympathising with “urban Naxals” and working for “breaking India” in its frustration over electoral losses. Briefing reporters on Mr Shah’s speech in the closed-door meeting, Nirmala Sitharaman said he termed the Opposition as “disruptionists” and that it no longer seems

to be representing the voice of the people. He made these comments in the context of the no-confidence motion brought by opposition parties in Lok Sabha in the Monsoon Session, saying that there was no reason for it and accusing them of being in “denial mode” after it was defeated with a big margin. With many political watchers suggesting that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) may find it hard to repeat its 2014 feat, Mr Shah said it will handily win in 19 states where it is in power and also emerge victorious in states such as West Bengal, Odisha and Telangana due to “anti-incumbency” factor against regional parties in power there. Meanwhile, sources said Mr Shah, whose three-year term ends in January, will lead the party in the Lok Sabha election in 2019 and its organisational polls are likely to be suspended till then as it focuses on the electoral challenge ahead, party sources said. A party leader said organisational polls in an election year have often been deferred in the past as well to allow the incumbent president, his team of office-bearers and workers to focus fully on polls.

“An Individual was today killed when he was fired upon in Hazratbal area of Srinagar district. A pistol was also recovered from the spot. Consequently, he was identified as Asif Nazir Dar, a resident of Panzgam area of Awantipora (in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district),” a police spokesman said.

Unidentified gunmen shot dead ‘IS-JK’ militant in Srinagar

New Delhi: : A militant, apparently belonging to Islamic State in Jammu and Kashmir (IS-JK), was shot dead by unidentified gunmen here in the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, police said. He said the Dar was active since January 2017. “Initially he had joined the proscribed terror outfit HM (Hizbul Mujahideen) but later got associated with the Eisa Fazili group of terrorists,” the spokesman said. He said police have registered a case in this regard and the investigation has been initiated. The body has been handed over to the legal heirs after completion of legal

formalities, the spokesman said. Eisa Fazili alias Eisa Roohullah al Kashmiri, a son of a Kashmir University employee, hailed from Soura area of the city here was killed in an encounter with security forces in Anantnag in March along with two other ultras. Islamic State in Jammu and Kashmir (IS-JK) had owned up the three militants killed in the encounter and had earlier also taken responsibility for the attack on the police guard post at the residence of Hurriyat Conference leader Fazal Haq Qureshi in Soura area of the city which police believed was done by Fazili. A policeman was killed in the attack and the assailants had fled with his service rifle. Earlier, based on preliminary information, a police official had said that Dar belonged to ‘Ansar Gazwat-ul-Hind’ – an affiliate of al-Qaeda in the valley led by Zakir Mussa.

SRINAGAR: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Farooq Abdullah on Saturday said that he wants to convey explicitly to all in the country that if Article 35A and Article 370 are flawed provisions of the Constitution then the state’s accession to the Indian Union is also wrong. He said, “If Article 35A and Article 370 are wrong then the accession is also wrong.”Mr Abdullah who is the president of J&K’s oldest political party National Conference (NC) also said that if the Centre does not end the ambiguity in its stand on Article 35A, the NC would boycott the

state Assembly and Lok Sabha elections. The NC had announced earlier this week in a significant development that it would not contest the upcoming rural and urb-an bodies elections in the state unless and until the Centre clears its position vis-a-vis Article 35A. It also said that the

situation is not conducive in the state for holding these elections. While speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a rally held beside the mausoleum of his father and legendary Kashmiri leader Sheikh Muhammad Abdullah to commemorate his 36th death anniversary.

Only one survives as Nepal chopper crashes in dense forest, 6 dead

Kathmandu: A helicopter with seven people on board crashed into a hillside in central Nepal on Saturday. 6 people including pilot died, one female passenger rescued. The helicopter was sent to Gorkha to airlift a patient to Kathmandu. The singlepilot Kathmandu-bound Altitude Air helicopter was carrying six passengers, including a Japanese trekker, when it lost contact with air traffic control after taking off from the central district of Gorkha. The chopper’s wreckage had been spotted on a forested hillside in

neighbouring Dhadhing district, said Kathmandu airport general manager Raj Kumar Chettri. “We are trying to reach the crash site by air and on foot. But the weather is hampering our rescue operations,” he told AFP. Nepal has a booming private helicopter industry, flying tourists and goods to remote corners of the Himalayan nation where road access is limited or non-existent. But the impoverished country has a poor air safety record due to poorly trained staff and lacklustre maintenance.

No Indians to be excluded from NRC: Rajnath Singh

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday assured that no Indian national would be excluded from the National Register of Citizens (NRC). Addressing the Northeast Students’ Festival in the nation’s capital to welcome new students from the region to Delhi, Singh said the NRC was necessary to identify Indian citizens and weed out illegal immigrants. “I want to say that no genuine Indian will be excluded from the NRC,” he said at the event organised by ‘My Home India’, an NGO founded by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sunil Deodhar. “It is absolutely necessary to know who are Indians and who are foreigners,” said Singh as he asserted that the update of the NRC, a list of Assam’s citizens, was

carried out under the direct supervision of the Supreme Court. Deodhar was the BJP in-charge in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s constituency Varanasi during 2014 Lok Sabha elections and a key architect of BJP’s victory in last assembly elections in Tripura. The update of NRC, the massive Supreme Court-monitored exercise to identify genuine Indian nationals living in

Assam excluded over 40 lakh people from the draft list published on July 30, creating a huge political controversy. The exercise aimed at identifying illegal immigrants in the state that borders Bangladesh was carried out in Assam following a decision in 2005 after a series of meetings between the central and state governments and the influential All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) Assam, which faced influx of people from Bangladesh since the early 20th century, is the only state having an NRC, first prepared in 1951. The current exercise started in 2005 under the then Congress regime got a major push only after the BJP came to power in the state with illegal immigration from Bangladesh as a poll plank.

Tamil Nadu: Four dead, 4 injured in explosions at two fireworks manufacturing units Tamil Nadu: Four people were killed and an equal number injured in explosions at two fireworks manufacturing units in Tamil Nadu’s Virudhunagar and Salem districts Saturday, police said. A 28-year-old man died and two others were injured in an explosion at an illegal firecrackers manufacturing unit near Athur in Salem, they said. The three were engaged in manufacturing the crackers when the incident occurred, police said, adding that the unit was being run illegally. The injured have been admitted to a hospital, they said. In the other explosion in a private fireworks unit at Kakivadanpatti in Virudhunagar, three persons were killed and two others injured, police said. Workers were mixing

chemicals required for manufacturing fireworks, they said, adding the explosion took place due to friction. Fire tenders

were rushed to the spot to put out the fire. On April 6, four people were killed when chemicals being mixed to make fireworks at two units in Sivakasi, hub of the country’s firecrackers industry, in Virudhunagar district exploded.

Ten months after Trump poser to Modi, US steers clear of request for troops in Afghanistan

New Delhi: About 10 months ago, when US President Donald Trump met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Sofitel Philippine Plaza Hotel in Manila, Philippines, on the sidelines of the ASEAN and East Asia summit in mid-November last year, he made an unusual request. “Why doesn’t India put troops in Afghanistan?”, Trump is learnt to have asked Modi. Sources said officials from both sides were caught offguard by the request.

Kerala’s lessons on balancing growth and environment

Kerala is no stranger to torrential rain. The first crash of the monsoon is expected halfway through the Malayali month of Edavam, 1 June by the Gregorian calendar. For the next four months, the rain or the threat of rain is ever present. A wide-brimmed black umbrella is among the staple durable goods owned even by poor households. In marketing terms, Kerala must be the only state where the market for umbrellas is saturated, with purchases only coming from replacement demand and maybe from new migrants coming in to help out with agricultural operations. Traditionally, the excess water in catchment areas went through flow zones smoothly into the ocean. The floods this year are attributed by experts to encroachments in those water flow channels. Poor dam management may have contributed, but if the flow zones had not been blocked, the damage would not have been so catastrophic. It is the same old story of what precipitated the floods in Mumbai and Chennai, coastal cities that had channels for drainage of excess monsoon rain into the sea. The difference was that Mumbai and Chennai are both urban areas with high land value, where commercial interests could pay their way out of any building bans. In Kerala, the encroachments have happened in forested areas, presumably tourist homes with sufficient profit prospects for developers to similarly pay their way. As a nation, we have no coherent policy on environmental protection. On the one hand, the environment has been systematically disprotected, with developers buying their way into approval of projects with predictably damaging consequences. On the other hand, the constant lament of entrepreneurs attracted by Make in India and other such growth initiatives is that environmental limits are never made clear, officials never respond to queries, and the resulting delays to the start of commercial operations make for defaults on bank loans. When a clear environmental protocol is developed for a region, its very clarity will ensure that approval can be either granted, or denied, within a short period. Delay serves no one, neither the applicant for approval, nor the people ostensibly being protected. For such a protocol to be defined, there has to be a lobby clamouring for it. The human cost of lives lost and livelihood-enabling infrastructure destroyed in a disaster like the Kerala floods will not particularly affect developers impervious to those things.

Don’t think I’ll get married again: Kalki Koechlin

Mumbai: Actor Kalki Koechlin believes society has built the institution of marriage in a way where women are still looked at as the weaker sex. In an interview published in a recently launched book, “Feminist Rani”, penned by Shaili Chopra and Meghna Pant, the actor said the “biggest problem” with marriage, especially for a woman, is the idea of “ownership”. Kalki and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, who got married in 2011, went through a divorce in 2015 after being separated for two years. “Once I got married, I was only invited to the things that Anurag was invited to. People would say, ‘Call Anurag’s wife’. They wouldn’t say, ‘call Kalki’ or ‘call Kalki’s husband’. “In marriage, a woman becomes the weaker sex, even if her husband doesn’t want her to be. This happens because of the way society has built the institution,” she said. Stating that “honesty” and “independence” are a must in a relationship, Kalki also shared how she went about the process of coming out of her marriage after the divorce. “... I found myself alone after a very long time. I had to fill up that empty space somehow. I didn’t want to fill it up by going crazy and getting drunk, or by surrounding myself with the people. “I chose the introverted version of filling up myself by spending more time at home, with the family... I’m happy I went through that journey,” she said.

Kalki also shared how she went about the process of coming out of her marriage after the divorce.

Aamir Khan not a perfectionist Mumbai : While the world may believe that Aamir Khan is a perfectionist the Dangal actor reveals that he is hardly what he is made out to be. “In my real life, my day is far from perfect. It is extremely chaotic. I get lost in my head when I am sitting in a meeting. If I am supposed to be sitting in a meeting for one hour, it usually goes on for two hours. Then I remember that there is something else I have to do. So, my day then goes on to become longer than what it is supposed to be,”

confesses Aamir adding that he does not identify with words like perfect, superstar or maverick. “I don’t see myself as any of these. I see myself as someone who is trying to learn whether it is through my films, Satyamev Jayate or Paani Foundation, every day is a learning experience for me. I am a learner and a student of whatever I do,” admits Aamir. The actor is now working on his next project Thugs of Hindostan where he will be collaborating with Amitabh Bachchan for the first time.

Rihanna’s heart goes Karisma Kapoor bonds with Shweta Bachchan out to Chris Brown

Mumbai: The new child support demands on Chris Brown are so shocking, even Rihanna Rihanna, 30, is sympathising, reports HollywoodLife.com. Regardless of their past and Chris’ violent behaviour, Rihanna seems to be agreeing with Brown’s claims of not wanting to spoil his daughter. Chris Brown’s latest legal battle has even Chris’s baby mama Nia Guzman, 35, now wants him to increase his monthly contributions

for daughter Royalty. “Rihanna’s heart goes out to Chris as he deals with his baby mama drama,” a friend of Rihanna’s shared. “She has no doubts that Chris loves and supports his daughter. And Rihanna also knows from their time together that being a father was something he’s always wanted, and although she’s not involved in his life anymore, from her perspective he’s been super devoted to his daughter Royalty.”

Mumbai: Abhishek Bachchan, 15 years ago, was all set to marry Karisma Kapoor when their engagement came to an abrupt end, leaving both families embittered. The otherwise diplomatic Bachchan family patriarch was so upset by the events that he even refused to work

with Kareena in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Black. But now, it seems those wounds have finally healed. A conclusion supported by the fact that Karisma attended the inauguration of Abhishek’s sister Shweta’s clothing line in Mumbai last week. The two ladies were even

spotted bonding, and it didn’t seem to be just for the cameras. “There was a sincere affection between them,” an attendee of the event says, adding, “For years, no member of the Bachchan family spoke to Karisma. Now, Shweta has broken the ice, and rightly so. You can’t hold grudges forever.”

Switzerland to honour Sridevi with statue

In a tribute to Sridevi, Switzerland tourism industry is planning to install a statue of the late actor, whose songdance-romance sequences against the Alps had set the Bollywood trend of shooting in the picturesque locations of the country. “The Swiss government has highlighted its India connection by installing Yash Chopra’s statue in Interlaken. Now, considering Sridevi’s role in promoting tourism here, there is a proposal to honour the actor by having her statue here,” a source familiar with the developments said. Raj Kapoor’s 1964 film Sangam

was the first Indian film shot in Switzerland, which was followed by An Evening in Paris in 1967. Since Sangam, Bollywood made Switzerland their favourite shooting location, paving way to cement the image of Switzerland, especially the Alpine scenery, as a romantic paradise for Indians. Aditya Chopra’s 1995 hit Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge (DDLJ) captured the imagination of Indian youth, also giving an unprecedented boost to the tourism sector here. According to Switzerland Tourism’s data, in 1992,

28,834 Indians visited Switzerland, but in 2017 it went up to 326,454. The government of Interlaken had awarded the honorary title of Ambassador of Interlaken to Yash Chopra in 2011 and a train is named after him. Almost all the songs of Sridevi starrer Chandni were shot with Switzerland. It also put Switzerland in an average Indian’s tourist bucket list. “Indian tourists are quite excited about the scenic locations because of the movies. Movies of Sridevi and Shah Rukh Khan have inspired many, irrespective of their age.

There’s no utility of tour games if you are not provided quality opposition, says Virat Kohli

London : India captain Virat Kohli has questioned the “utility” of pre-series tour games if the touring side is not provided with ideal conditions and opposition before a Test series starts. India have lost back-to-back Test series in South Africa and England with many former greats, including legendary Sunil Gavaskar questioning as to why the team did not play adequate number of warmup games. During an interview with Michael Holding for ‘Sony Liv’, Kohli gave his point of view on the raging debate about team’s mode of preparation. “Lot of people talk about tour games but where are those tour games happening and against what quality of bowling are very important questions to be asked,” Kohli said. “Because if you don’t get the preparation you need before a Test

series, then it is actually not utilised well. Time is not utilised well if you don’t get the quality of opposition that you will face in Test cricket,” he added. Asked where exactly India went wrong in the ongoing series against England, Kohli pointed out two crucial phases — the second innings chase at the Edgbaston (1st Test) and the first innings at Southampton (fourth Test). “Sitting right now, two things — the second innings at Birmingham and first innings at Southampton. Sitting here, I am not thinking of anything else. The key was to make the team win and twice I could have contributed more. “I know Trent Bridge was great but I remember second innings at Birmingham and first innings at Southampton and I am thinking about that.

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Germany’s Mats Hummels to miss Peru game; Nico Schulz and Julian Brandt to start

Mitchell Marsh scores unbeaten 86 as Australia A score 290/6 on Day 1

Bengaluru : Skipper Mitchell Marsh batted responsibly for his unbeaten 86 as Australia A scored 290 for six on the opening day of the second unofficial ‘Test’ match. Opting to bat, Australia A were in trouble at 180 for six before Marsh and pacer Michael Neser (44 batting) added 110 runs for the unbroken seventh wicket stand. Marsh played 151 balls so far, hitting 13 boundaries while Neser has also played 108 balls hitting six fours in the process. Among the top order, No 3 Travis Head (68) and opener Kurtis Patterson (48) added 92 runs for the second wicket before a middle-order collapse occurred. Chinaman Kuldeep Yadav (2/68) and left-arm orthodox Shahbaz Nadeem (2/64)

were the most successful bowlers. Off-spinner Krishnappa Gowtham (1/60) and Rajneesh Gurbani (1/50) also chipped in with a wicket each. Australia A started off disastrously by losing opener Matt Renshaw for a duck. The opener, who made his way into the side after recovering from hamstring injury, was cleaned up by seamer Gurbani. However Patterson and Head steadied the ship with a 92-run second wicket stand. Patterson played aggressively hitting eight boundaries while Head played steadily and kept the scoreboard ticking, until Nadeem dismissed him. Head’s 68 was decorated with 10 boundaries, before he was stumped by Kona Bharat off Yadav’s bowling.

Berlin : Germany defender Mats Hummels has been ruled out of Sunday’s friendly international against Peru with a heel injury while newcomer Nico Schulz is set to start, coach Joachim Loew said on Saturday. Germany are looking to recover from a shock World Cup performance that saw the four-times world champions crash out at the group stage. They managed a goalless draw against world champions France in their Nations League opener on Thursday and

Loew said his players needed to demonstrate the same commitment and discipline. “That is what I want to see again. What I expect is the same commitment, the same discipline as against France. “We must not drift off again. We have to learn to consistently recreate that compactness and also maybe be a bit faster on the switch,” Loew said. Defender Hummels is nursing a minor heel injury that will take a few days to heal. The coach plans to start with 25-year-old

Schulz at the back as well as Julian Brandt on the wing and with MarcAndre ter Stegen in goal. “I have a chance to make six changes in this game and I will most likely use them,” Loew said. “Nico Schulz will start on the left (as left back). Julian Brandt will also start.” Loew said he was also likely to continue with Joshua Kimmich in a holding midfielder role from right back “in the near future”, with Matthias Ginter expected as fullback.

India vs Pakistan is just another game, says Shoaib

New Delhi : Ahead of India’s most anticipated clash against arch-rivals Pakistan in upcoming Asia Cup, Pakistani middle-order batsman, Shoaib Malik has refused to give importance to the fanfare building around it and stated that the match is ‘just another game’. Stating that hype ‘adds unnecessary pressure’, Malik maintained that such an occasion provides the perfect opportunity for players to emerge as a star. “I think that the match against India is just another game and we should avoid creating hype as it adds unnecessary pressure,” Malik was quoted by the ICC website as saying. “This is

perhaps the only cricket match that the entire cricket fraternity watches and not only India and Pakistan fans, which is why it provides a massive opportunity to players if they want to become a hero,” he added. Commenting on how the venue (Dubai) works in favour of Pakistan, Malik said, “Playing in UAE gives us an advantage but it is not as easy as people think it is. If you notice our track record here, it is better in Test cricket but when it comes to playing the shorter formats our performances aren’t extraordinary. People need to understand that batting under lights here is difficult as conditions are different

Girls with CHD in India find New Hope with Pernod Ricard India Charitable Foundation and Genesis Foundation New Delhi: In a move towards promoting Congenital Heart Defects (CHD) free India and Saving the Girl Child, Pernod Ricard India Charitable Foundation (PRICF) and Genesis Foundation have joined hands to support the surgery of girls suffering from Congenital Heart Defects (CHD). Under this collaboration, PRICF would be supporting surgeries of 20+ girls with a grant of INR 40 Lakhs. According to a report released by UNICEF in 2018 “More baby girls than boys die in India, as parents neglect healthcare” . The report also stated that “a preference for sons encourages sex-selective abortions, which has led to skewed sex ratios” . The sex ratio in the country today stands at a staggering 940 females per 1000 males. According to the data collected by UNICEF in 2017, nearly 60 percent of the infants admitted to across 700 state run hospital facilities were boys. This is because parents are less likely to seek medical treatment for their daughter than their son. CHD is the most common congenital anomaly in newborn babies. With over 2 lakh children born with CHD in the country, it contributes to 10% of child mortality. Due to lack of an efficient tracking system, several kids go undetected and without treatment 60% of CHD are lethal within first two years of life.

but that does not mean there isn’t room for improvement. We will continue working to improve in this particular area.” Malik boasts of an impressive record against India, as the former Pakistan skipper has hit four out of his nine tons against the latter. The right-handed batsman has also scored 1661 runs in 39 matches he has played against India. India will take on Pakistan on September 19 in Dubai International Cricket Stadium and the match will begin at 5 pm (IST) in the evening. India, who will be led by Rohit Sharma, will start their Asia Cup campaign against Hong Kong on the previous day.

INDIA U-19s TO PLAY BACK-TO-BACK FRIENDLIES AGAINST SERBIA

NEW DELHI : After playing in the four-nation tournament in Croatia against U-19 Youth Team of World Champions France, Runners-up Croatia, and Slovenia, the U-19 National Team will be travelling to Serbia to play two backto-back International Friendlies against Serbia U-19s on September 13 and September 17, 2018 respectively in Serbia. Both the matches are part of the exposure tour being organised by the All India Football Federation in coordination with SAI to provide the best possible preparation to the U-19 boys for the forthcoming Hero I-League season, and an eye on U-19 AFC Championship qualification next year. National Team Director Abhishek Yadav said playing regularly against youth teams of nations in top 50 of FIFA Rankings has its own significance. “Serbia will be the fifth top-50 team (as per the FIFA rankings) that we will be facing within a month-and-a-half. In a 50-day period, we will be competing six matches under our belt against regular World Cuppers from the two continents of World Football -- South America and Europe,” he stated. “The matches have been part of competitions so there has been that added edge. The players and our all-Indian staff are learning from these tough tests. Motivation levels are now much higher. I am satisfied with the way we were able to design this pre-season and this is the way we aim to continue,” he added. “I am optimistic the influence of all these programmes will be seen for long to shape up a better future for Indian Football.

will help Kerala get over flood miseries: state tourism director Ahmedabad : In a bid to revive the tourism sector in the flood-hit Kerala, officials from the state government on Saturday visited Gujarat for their first promotion campaign. Hard selling the once-in-twelve-year Neelakurinji blooms in Munnar, snake boat races in IPL formats, Jatayu Park and the river cruises, officials stated that 99 per cent of tourist destinations have been opened. They said tourist inflows during the upcoming festive season of Navratri will help the flood-battered state forget its miseries. “From September 1, 99 per cent of the tourism destinations have already become accessible. Ninety-six per cent of the tourist accommodation units have been opened. All the airports and railway stations have started functioning. Bus routes and taxi services have also started operations,” said P Bala Kiran, Director of Kerala Tourism while visiting the trade fair and inviting Gujaratis who make up one-sixth of the total tourists visiting the state annually.

Over 2.39 lakh Gujaratis visited Kerala in 2016. “This grew to 24.46 per cent in 2017-18,” he said. When asked why Kerala government was pushing tourism immediately after floods, the IAS officer said, “People question why so fast. We want to get back to normal because we want to forget the miseries. That can only happen when we invite the entire world to Kerala with a smile.” He said that by August 29, all tourist destinations were cleaned of filth and silt left by the floods. “This is the first tourism destination we have come for promotion after the floods… “There is a huge inflow of tourists from Gujarat, Delhi and Kolkata during Navratri. We are having extremely high hopes for September and October which is the Navratri season,” Kiran remarked dispelling rumours of health, sanitation and connectivity. He said that even the worst affected Kochi-Munnar road has also become functional.

Coast Guard Personnel in Gujarat

Ahmedabad : Rakesh Pal, the commander of the Indian Coast Guard’s northwest region covering Gujarat, said on Saturday that an order has been issued to deny subsidised liquor to overweight and obese personnel. Pal said the move will be applicable to personnel, irrespective of their ranks, who have been told by the medical board to reduce weight. He noted that alcohol has been observed to be a major factor behind obesity and the decision was taken to tackle the problem as several such personnel could not be posted at sea. The drastic measure, he said, was taken after they were repeatedly told to reduce

weight, but did not heed to it. “It is for those people under medical category, who are obese and have not reduced their weight. They have been told to reduce weight, following which their entitlement of alcohol will be restored,” Pal said. Pal said the task of the Coast Guard is to man the sea, but due to fitness issues some officials cannot be posted on ships. “Our job is to be at the sea and unfit men cannot be posted at sea as one has to carry out various tasks,” he said. Armed forces personnel are entitled for a certain amount of alcohol from the defence canteens, where it is cheaper in comparison to the market rate.

Amman : US President Donald Trump said on Friday a letter from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which he believes will be positive, is on its way to him, a day after expressing fresh optimism about a denuclearization deal. “I know that a letter is being delivered to me, a personal letter from Kim Jong Un to me. It was handed at the border … yesterday,” Trump told reporters on Air Force One. “It’s being delivered. It’s actually an elegant way… and I think it’s going to be a positive letter.” The two leaders have traded correspondence as they negotiate over North Korea’s nuclear program and Trump has also praised Kim on social media. On Thursday, Trump thanked Kim on Twitter for expressing “unwavering faith in President Trump” and added: “We will get it done together!” Trump’s latest remarks came after South Korean officials said after meeting Kim in Pyongyang this week that the North Korean leader had given his first timeline for denuclearization, in spite of widespread skepticism about his willingness to give up a nuclear weapons program that threatens the United States. According to the South Korean officials, Kim said his faith in Trump was “unchanged” and he wanted denuclearization of the Korean peninsula and an end to hostile relations with the United States before Trump’s first term ends in early 2021.
