Short News BJP in state of extreme panic, sensing defeats in Assembly polls: Congress New Delhi: The Congress hit out at the government Saturday over ED raids against Robert Vadra’s associates, alleging that the Modi dispensation was using “high-handed tactics” to threaten people as it was in a “state of panic of the highest degree” sensing poll defeats. At a press conference at the All India Congress Committee (AICC) headquarters here, party spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi also alleged that there was never such a “terror raj” in the “constitutional rule” of India. “We fought the British Raj and the BJP would do well to know that the day of judgement will come for it,” he said. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) carried out searches against three persons linked to Congress leader Sonia Gandhi’s son-inlaw Robert Vadra Friday.

Sharad Yadav expresses regret for ‘hurting’ remarks on Vasundhara Raje Ranchi: Facing flak for his remarks against Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, former JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Saturday expressed regret for “hurting” her and said he would write to her. Raje has demanded that the Election Commission take cognisance of Yadav’s “insulting” remarks and taken action against him. “I have seen her (Raje’s) comments. Our relations are very old. If she thinks whatever I had said has hurt her, I express my regret for that,” Yadav told reporters. “I will also write a letter to her,” he added. Yadav, a former JD(U) Rajya Sabha member, while campaigning for Loktantrik Janata Dal in Alwar in Rajasthan on Wednesday, had called Raje fat and asked people to give her rest. After criticism from various quarters, Yadav had said it was a joke and that he had no intention of hurting Raje and it was not meant to be derogatory in any way.

11 Killed After Bus Falls Into Gorge In Jammu And Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Eleven people were killed and several were injured after a bus they were travelling in skidded off the road and fell 100 metres into a rocky gorge in Jammu and Kashmir’s Poonch district today, the police said. The bus was going from Loran to Poonch, 175 km from state capital Srinagar. The injured people have been admitted to a hospital at Mandi. The driver could have been speeding around the tight turns, the police said, adding it is likely he lost control while turning around a tight bend before skidding off the road.

The bus came to rest on a rocky stream between two hills after falling from the narrow mountain road. It hit the rocks with such force that the roof tore off completely, rescuers who are at the site said. The front part of the bus got separated by the impact and was flung some metres away from the main chassis. The number of dead may rise as some of the injured people are critical, a police officer said. The accident took place after a bus fell into a deep gorge near Mandi Plera area in Jammu division’s Poonch district.

Bulandshahr violence: Soldier named ‘Surgical strikes for in FIR for cop’s murder detained political capital’:

New Delhi: A soldier allegedly involved in the Bulandshahr firing in Uttar Pradesh in which a police Inspector and a civilian were killed was detained by his unit in Jammu and Kashmir on Saturday, Army sources said. Jitendra Malik alias Jeetu Fauji was detained by the 22 Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore town. A special investigation team (SIT) of the Uttar Pradesh Police was expected to reach here later to take him into custody. Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and a civilian, Sumit Kumar, were shot dead in Bulandshahr in mob violence last week. The role of Malik in

the killing of Inspector Singh surfaced after a purported video of the mob violence circulating on social media allegedly shows him opening fire. Malik’s mother, Ratan Kaur, told the police that he was not involved in the violence. The Supreme Court had asked state governments to designate a nodal officer heading a special task force in each district — to procure intelligence reports and identify districts where incidents of mob violence and lynching had been reported in the past five years. The nodal officer was not supposed to be below the rank of SP.

CM Shivraj Chouhan calls himself ‘biggest pollster’, predicts BJP win

TS elections results may impact N Chandrababu Naidu’s prospects Hyderabad: The Telangana elections results will have impact the polls in neighbouring Andhra Pradesh where the polls are due in April next year along with Lok Sabha elections. AP political leaders are awaiting as eagerly as their TS counterparts, the results on Tuesday. The effect will be felt more particularly on TD president and AP Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu who took an active role in the campaign. It may significantly tell on his personal future in national politics and the fortunes of the Telugu Desam in AP. There could even be political changes in AP based on the TS Assembly results. If the People’s Front wins, the personal stature of Mr Naidu, who campaigned vigorously for the alliance, will further improve and will bolster his attempts to emerge as a key leader in national politics who is forming a front against the BJP. This will also benefit the TD in the AP elections. If the TRS wins, Mr Naidu may face problems in AP and from Telangana state. The TRS concentrated its campaign on Mr Naidu, making it a Rao vs Naidu affair. Caretaker minister K.T. Rama Rao in the campaign had hinted that the TRS would enter AP politics.

Chouhan’s reaction came amid the exit polls predicting a tight race between BJP and Congress in the state. Datia: As the exit polls predicted a tight race with the Congress, Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday expressed confidence that the BJP would win a comfortable majority in the Assembly election to form a government for the fourth consecutive time. “I am the biggest surveyor (pollster) as I remain in the midst of public all day long. The BJP is set to romp home,” Chouhan told reporters after visiting the famous Shree Pitambara Peeth temple here. He was asked about exit polls predicting a close fight between the BJP and the Congress. “We have got the blessings of every section of society in the elections and we are on the way to win the polls,” he claimed. The state went to polls on November 28 and results for the 230-member

House will be declared on December 11. “Abki baar, 200 par (this time, over 200 seats),” Chouhan said repeating the BJP’s slogan for the MP polls. “I have come to seek the blessing of goddess Pitambara for the well being of Madhya Pradesh,” the chief minister said. While Republic TV-Jan Ki Baat exit poll gave 108-128 seats to the BJP and 95-115 to the Congress in the 230-member Madhya Pradesh, India Today-Axis said the saffron party could win 102-120 seats as against 104-122 for the Congress. However, the Times Now-CNX exit poll predicted a majority for the BJP in MP with 126 seats and gave the Congress a tally of 89 seats. On the other hand, ABP News exit poll said the Congress is likely to get a majority by bagging 126 seats. The BJP, it added, would get 94 seats.

Rahul Gandhi tweets jibe at PM Modi

New Delhi: Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday attacked Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Lt Gen (retd) D S Hooda’s remarks that it would have been better if the 2016 surgical strikes were carried out secretly, alleging that the PM used the military action for “political capital”. Lt Gen (retd) Hooda, responding to a question during the Military Literature Festival in Chandigarh on Friday, had said in hindsight, it would have been better had “we done it (surgical strikes) secretly”. Taking to Twitter, Gandhi said: “Spoken like a true soldier General. India is so proud of you. Mr 36 has absolutely no shame in using our military as a personal asset. “He used the surgical strikes for political capital and the Rafale deal to increase Anil Ambani’s real capital by 30,000 Cr. #SurgicalStrike (sic).” Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala thanked Lt Gen (retd) Hooda for “exposing the petty politicisation by PM Modi”. “No one can use the valour & sacrifice of our brave soldiers to score cheap political points Modiji is squarely guilty of compromising National Security & Strategic Interests by unwarranted chest thumping!” he wrote on Twitter.

Amit Shah to discuss 2019 strategy as BJP top guns go into ‘exit’ huddle

New Delhi: A day after most exit polls predicted the BJP losing its grip over the three key states falling in the ‘Hindi heartland’ and the muchneeded electoral gains for the Congress ahead of the 2019 electoral battle, BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday held a crucial meeting with the party’s national general secretaries to deliberate on the party’s own feedback from the ground from the five states that went to polls. The BJP, sources said, has also called a meeting of its national office-bearers on Dec. 13 to discuss the Assembly polls results and to strategise for the Lok Sabha polls. Results

of the Assembly polls of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Mizoram and Telangana state will be declared on December 11. In Mizoram, the predictions favoured Mizoram National Front (MNF) over the Congress, which had been ruling the Northeastern state for a decade. When asked about the party’s performance in the three ‘Hindi heartland’ state Assembly polls, Mr Shah asserted that the BJP will retain power in these states. In Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, the BJP has been ruling since 2003 and is confident of forming the government for the fourth time in a row.

Surgical strike overhyped, politicised: ex-Army officer Lt Gen (retd) DS Hooda

‘It would have been better had we done it (surgical strikes) secretly,’ the ex-Army officer said. Chandigarh: The initial euphoria over the success of surgical strike was natural but the constant hype around the operation was unwarranted, said former Army officer Lieutenant General D S Hooda (retired), two years after the surgical strikes were carried out by the Army across the Line of Control. “I do think there was too much hype over it. The military operation was important and we had to do it. Now how much should it have been politicised, whether it is right or wrong is something that should be asked to politicians,” Lieutenant

General DS Hooda (retired) who was the Northern Army Commander when the operation was carried out on September 29, 2016 across the Line of Control (LoC) as a response to a terrorist attack in Uri earlier that month told news agency ANI. The Army had said its special forces inflicted “significant casualties” on terrorists waiting there to cross into Indian territory. Lt Gen Hooda was speaking during a panel discussion on the topic, ‘Role of Cross-Border Operations and Surgical Strikes,’ on the first day of Military Literature Festival 2018 in Chandigarh.

Pak PM said he has asked for status of the case which is being heard in an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan.

Imran tacitly acknowledges Mumbai 26/11 attack originated from Pak soil

Washington: Pakistan wants “something done about the bombers of Mumbai”, its Prime Minister Imran Khan has said while tacitly acknowledging that the attack of November 2008 originated from the Pakistani soil. Khan, who has spoken about Pakistan taking two steps for peace for every step taken by India, said his government wants to prosecute those involved in the “act of terror” as it is in “Islamabad’s interest to resolve the matter. The Pakistan Prime Minister said he has asked for the

status of the case which is being heard in an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan. On November 26, 2008, 10 heavily-armed Lashkar-eTaiba (LeT) terrorists sailed into Mumbai and attacked multiple places in the city, including the iconic Taj Hotel. In the coordinated attacks which shook

the entire world, 166 people were killed and 300 injured. “We also want something done about the bombers of Mumbai. I have asked our government to find out the status of the case. Resolving that case is in our interest because it was an act of terrorism,” Khan said in an interview to the Washington Post, his first to a foreign publication. He stated this when asked about the prosecution of the perpetrators of the audacious attacks and the release of LeT’s operations commander Zaki-ur-Rehman Lakhvi.

How to end Venezuela’s nightmare

Wishing a problem away is seldom an effective strategy. While the international community has had its attention focused on other issues, the Venezuelan catastrophe has deepened. If current trends continue, it will only get worse. A day’s work at the median wage now buys 1.7 eggs or a kilogram of yuca, the cheapest available calorie. A kilogram of local cheese costs 18 days of median-wage work; a kilogram of meat costs almost a month, depending on the cut. Prices have been rising at hyperinflationary rates for 13 straight months and inflation is on track to surpass the 1,000,000% mark this month. Output continues to fall like a stone: Opec reports that in October 2018, production was down 37% year-on-year, or almost 700,000 barrels a day. According to Alianza Salud, a coalition of NGOs, new malaria cases in 2018 have shot up by a factor of 12 since 2012, bringing the total to over 600,000, which is 54% of all cases in the Americas. Large swaths of Venezuela’s territory have been ceded to criminal organizations, including terrorist groups such as Colombia’s Farc and ELN, which collude with the National Guard in the production of gold and coltan, as well as running illegal drug trade. As a result, Venezuelans have been leaving in droves, creating a refugee crisis of Syrian proportions, the biggest ever in the Americas. Going by Facebook reports, which says 3.3 million Venezuelan users were abroad, my research team at the Center for International Development at Harvard University estimates that there must be at least 5.5 million, overall. Of those tweeting only from Venezuela in 2017, by November, over 10% had left the country. Colombia, Ecuador and Peru, despite their valiant efforts, are facing increasing difficulties in coping with the refugee flow. It is patently obvious that Venezuela’s problems will not be solved unless and until there was a regime change. After all, both the regime and the economic collapse are the consequences of the elimination of basic rights. Venezuelans cannot invest and produce to satisfy their needs, because economic rights have been taken away; and they cannot change wrongheaded policies, because their political rights have been taken away. A turnaround will require the re-empowerment of Venezuelans. Fortunately, an end is in sight to this nightmare, but it will require coordination between the Venezuelan democratic forces and the international community. 10 January marks the end of President Nicolás Maduro’s term, which started with his election in 2013.

Um, like why are people paying attention to me?’” Larson said.

India vs Australia: Jasprit Bumrah backs R Ashwin to play a crucial role in Australia’s chase

Jasprit Bumrah believes R Ashwin will play a key role when Australia come out to bat and chase India’s total in the first Test at the Adelaide Oval. Adelaide: With India already placed in a strong position with a 166-run lead, Indian seamer Jasprit Bumrah believes that R Ashwin will play a major role, when Australia come out to bat to chase down the target. After a gritty 71-run partnership between Virat Kohli and Cheteshwar Pujara for the third wicket, India reached 151/3 at the end of Day 3 of the first Test at the Adelaide Oval. “Ashwin will obviously play a more crucial role now because with the rough, we saw Nathan Lyon using the rough to his advantage. He is an experienced bowler and

knows what he has to do. So he will probably work on it and he will play a crucial role for sure,” Bumrah said at the end of day’s play. Bumrah credited the bowling department for packing up the Australian tailenders in the first session on Saturday. The seamer stated that bowlers are constantly trying to figure out the lengths which are useful. Comparing the Australian conditions with the ones in England and South Africa, the 25-year-old said, “In South Africa and England, there was a lot of lateral movement.

Bhubaneswar : Gautam Gambhir has always been a non-conformist but he has had no regrets even if it meant an “unfulfilled career”, “lot of enemies” because he could “sleep peacefully at night”. One of the most gutsy cricketers that the country has ever produced, Gambhir feels that the Indian society in general does not warm up to people who are forthright in their views. “It’s not

only about cricketing system, in general our society doesn’t like to be shown the mirror. We like to maintain the status quo and not look at the reality. Petrol prices down nearly 15% from record high levels

New Delhi: Petrol prices across the four metros have declined by nearly 15% from the record high levels they had reached in October. In Delhi, petrol was priced at Rs 70.70 per litre, lower by 14.64 per cent from the all-time high of Rs 82.83, recorded on October 16 and 17, data from the IndianOil Corp’s website showed. On Friday, the petrol price in the national capital was Rs 70.92 per litre. In the other metros of Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai, the cost of petrol has declined 14.05 per cent, 13.60 per cent and 14.83 per cent, respectively from the highs reached on October 16 at Rs 72.75, Rs 76.28 and Rs 73.33 per litre on Saturday. On Friday, prices in the respective cities were Rs 72.97, Rs 76.50 and Rs 86.10 per litre. The slide in domestic fuel prices comes in line with the recent decline in crude oil prices due to high supplies. However, as the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) on Friday decided to reduce its oil supply by 1.2 million barrels per day for the first half of 2019, prices may see an up-turn leading to a reversal in India’s domestic fuel prices movement.

Italy stampede: At least six dead, 35 injured at nightclub in Ancona

Armenians set to cast ballots in snap parliamentary vote Beijing : Armenians are set to vote in a snap parliamentary election this Sunday that is expected to cement the rule of the new prime minister who spearheaded the massive protests earlier this year that forced the resignation of his predecessor. The charismatic 43-year-old Nikol Pashinian, who took office in May, pushed for the elections in a bid to win control of a parliament that was dominated by his political foes. Pashinian, a former journalist turned politician, has tapped into public anger over widespread poverty, high unemployment and rampant corruption in the landlocked former

Soviet nation of 3 million that borders Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and Iran. His fiery rhetoric and easy style have helped cement his popularity. Opinion polls have indicated that Pashinian’s My Step alliance is set to sweep the vote, while the Republican Party that controlled the old parliament is trailing far behind. The protests in Armenia erupted in April when Serzh Sargsyan, who had served as president for a decade, moved into the prime minister’s seat, a move seen by critics as an attempt to hold on to power following a constitutional reform that had shifted most power to the prime minister’s office.

Rome : Six people, all but one of them minors, were killed and about 35 others injured in a stampede of panicked concertgoers early Saturday at a disco in a small town on Italy’s central Adriatic coast, authorities said. The dead included three girls and two boys and an adult woman, a mother who had accompanied her daughter to the disco in Corinaldo, where an Italian rapper was entertaining the crowd, police chief Oreste Capocasa said in nearby Ancona. Twelve of the 35 injured were in serious condition, Capocasa said. The ages of the victims weren’t immediately given. It wasn’t immediately clear how many people were inside when the stampede erupted or the club’s maximum capacity. Italian fire officials and ANSA news agency said the audience at Italian rapper Sfera Ebbasta’s concert at the Lanterna Azzurra nightclub panicked and ran for the exits after someone sprayed a substance similar to pepper spray. A teenager told ANSA he discovered that at least one of the emergency exits was locked when he tried to flee.

Arrest of Huawei CFO ‘extremely nasty’: China foreign ministry

Beijing : China warned Canada on Saturday that there would be severe consequences if it did not immediately release Huawei Technologies Co Ltd’s chief financial officer, calling the case “extremely nasty”. Meng Wanzhou, Huawei’s global chief financial officer, was arrested in Canada on Dec. 1 and faces extradition to the United States, which alleges that she covered up her company’s links to a firm that tried to sell equipment to Iran despite sanctions. The executive is also the daughter of the founder of Huawei. If extradited to the United States, Meng would face charges of conspiracy to defraud multiple financial

institutions, a Canadian court heard on Friday, with a maximum sentence of 30 years for each charge. No decision was reached at the extradition hearing after nearly six hours of arguments and counterarguments, and the hearing was adjourned until Monday. In a short statement, China’s Foreign Ministry said that Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng had issued the warning to release Meng to Canada’s ambassador in Beijing, summoning him to lodge a “strong protest”. Canada’s arrest of Meng at the request of the United States, while she was changing plane in Vancouver, was a serious breach of her lawful rights, Le said.
