Jammu Governor ’s rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir today with PDP, which emerged as the single-largest party, and BJP failing to cobble up the required number to form t he government, triggering a blame game among political parties. The decision came a day after Governor N N Vohra submited his report to President Pranab Mukherjee, stating that Omar Abdullah had requested to be relieved of the post of being a caretaker Chief Minister. The Governor’s report contained some suggestions including the option of a spell of Governor’s rule in the wake of no party getting the number required to

form a government after the highly-fractured verdict in the Assembly elections, official sources said here. Aft er t he election results were out on December 23, neither PDP which emerged as the single largest party with 28 seats nor BJP with 25 could get the magic figure of 44 to stake claim to form a government. NC has 15 MLAs while the Congress 12. A blame game erupted today with Omar squarely blaming PDP patron Mufti Mohammed Sayeed for bringing the state under Governor ’s rule and accusing him of continuing the deadlock over government formation to get a full six-year term as Chief Minister. PDP hit back at Omar, saying there

In the midst of this spat, BJP President Amit Shah said in Vijayawada that his party was in talks with both the PDP and the NC to form the next government in the state. “Our talks are going on with the two parties in Kashmir…We are trying to form a BJP government in the state,” he said. Union Home Minist er Rajnath Singh had last night forwarded t he Governor’s report to the Prime Minister’s Office. Governor ’s rule was imposed in the state under Section 92 of Jammu and Kashmir Constitution which allows t he Governor to proclaim it in

case of failure of Constitutional machinery in the state. President Pranab Mukherjee is understood to have given his concurrence for Governor’s rule which has been imposed in the state for the sixth time since 1977. Omar had said the state needed a full-time administrator to deal with the situation along the border with Pakistan and providing relief to floodaffected people in the Kashmir Valley. He was asked to continue as caretaker Chief Minister on December 24 after his resignation in the wake of defeat of his party. An official statement issued this evening in Jammu said Governor’s rule has been imposed in the state under Section 92(1) of t he

Sirisena, survived 5 LTTE attacks, will lead Sri Lanka to change His name is probably the grandest thing about the man who is known for his simplicity. Gamaralalage Maithripala Yapa Sirisena, who was sworn in as Sri Lanka’s seventh president Friday evening, hails from a middle-class, agricultural family from Polunnaruwa, an ancient royal capital east of Colombo famous for it s magnificent Buddhist stupas and temples. The 63-year-old low-profile minist er defected from the ruling party in 2013 aft er

emerging as a surprise consensus candidate for a disparate opposition, turning the tables on the longest-serving head of st ate in South Asia, Mahinda Rajapaksa, who expected to breeze through after calling an early election. Sirisena was born in 1951 and received his early education from the Royal College in his native district. He then studied at a school of agriculture for three years and graduated in 1980 in political science from a Russian university.

Sources say the one-time ally of the outgoing president may have first developed a passion for Marxism during his higher education, though he joined the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP)'s youth wing in 1967 as a teenager and quickly rose to become a politburo member in 1981.

The attack on Charlie Hebdo The horrific terrorist attack in Paris at the office of the French magazine Charlie Hebdo is a direct assault on the freedom of speech, thought and expression, the fundamentals on which all open, democratic societies are built. Ten staff members at the satirical weekly, including four of its top cartoonists, were gunned down by masked men who entered the building and targeted the editorial meeting in what seemed to be a wellplanned and professional operation. They left shouting Allahu-Akbar, killing two policemen on the street outside before driving off in a getaway car. Since 2006, when it first published the Danish cartoons of Prophet Mohammed, Charlie Hebdo had been under threat of violent attacks by Islamist groups. Refusing to be intimidated, the publication continued to caricature Islam even after a firebombing in November 2011, just as it also relentlessly lampooned Christianity and Judaism — its Christmas week cover caricaturing the birth of Jesus was designed to provoke and cause offence. Self-censorship in order not to hurt religious sensibilities is now the norm in most parts of the world, so too in India, where media and expressions of popular culture including cinema, art and writing have to walk the tightrope daily in deference to what Salman Rushdie in an interview to this newspaper described as the non-existent “right to not be offended”: the fracas caused by Hindutva groups against the film PK is the most recent example of this. In truly democratic societies, this should not be the case, and that is what Charlie Hebdo believed and practised. Irrespective of what anyone thinks of its editorial policy, all who believe in freedom of expression and the democratic way of life must express solidarity with the magazine, and condemn this unspeakable act of violence against them. Attacking democratic freedoms is part of a larger agenda. Whether it is al-Qaeda, IS or any other group, extremist ideology thrives best in a polarised society. If the sizeable numbers of people adhering to the Muslim faith have been able to resist Islamism, it is because French republicanism has been able to surmount even the most divisive controversies, such as the ban on wearing the hijab and niqab in public and the Islamophobic discourse by the French rightwing parties that surrounded it. While the inevitable security measures will have to be taken, it would be most unfortunate if the attack on Charlie Hebdo were to give rise to a backlash against French Muslims. That would result in precisely what Islamist groups want — an alienated Muslim population that would become a recruiting ground for their violent cause. Maintaining freedoms and equality before the law in the face of a severe challenge to security is the most difficult test for any democratic polity and society.

Rihanna, Taylor Swift's songs help children get rid of pain

Washington A new study has found that songs by Rihanna, Taylor Swiftand other singers gives a significant reduction in pain to kids after major surgeries. The study led by pediatrics at Northwestern Medicine has found music and audio books as a strategy to control post-surgical pain because medication like opioid analgesics that are given to kids after surgery causes breathing problems in them, and it makes the care takes to control the dose, and hence children's pain is not well controlled.

Dr. Santhanam Suresh, a senior author of the study explained that audio therapy is an exciting and inexpensive opportunity and should be considered by hospitals as an important strategy to minimize pain in children undergoing major surgery, and doesn't even have any side effects. The researchers elucidated that music chosen by kids on their own works better than any other medicine as it distracts the brain to refocus on something else, and it also avoids risky side effects of opioid drugs.

QUOTE “Gujarat government responsible if bandh turns OF THE violent.” - Shankarsinh Vaghela (Leader of Opposition in the Gujarat assembly) DAY

Tevar review: Arjun's fun, but Sonakshi's Will 2015 be Deepika a bimbo and film is stuck in the80s Padukone's year again? If data is to be believed, India is a young country and a growing percentage of our galloping population is in their 30s and younger. This is supposed to make India the land t hat looks towards the future, towards a shinier, modern India that is nothing like the old India of the preliberalisation era. So then why is it that commercial Hindi film, the shining cord that binds the nation together, has steadfastly refused to move out of the 80s? Every time a film that hopes to be a blockbuster is released, all Bollywood gives us are a rehash of the kitschy tropes and clichés that filled '80s’ Hindi cinema, and Tevar is the latest example of this weird time warp. A chap called Pint oo (Arjun Kapoor) and a damsel named Radhika (Sonakshi Sinha) are thrown together by circumstance. She wants to get to the USA. He

wants to be a hero. Pintoo just happens to be there when Radhika is being kidnapped by Gajendra (Manoj Bajpai), so young Pintoo does what every Hindi-film-fuelled jock dreams of doing: he thonks Gajendra in order to save Radhika, only to find people are shooting at him. So, to save his and her skins, Pint oo and Radhika start running. You see, Gajendra is the younger brother and wayward muscleman of Uttar Pradesh’s Minister of Home Affairs, and he wants Radhika as his bride. He’s got an army of

thugs and the state machinery is more than ready to do his bidding, which is usually to turn a blind eye to people being murdered in public. So Pintoo and Radhika run, literally. After some time, it’s as though the two of them are training for the marathon rather than actually responding to a situation because arguably, the simplest option would be to take their troubles to Pintoo’s dad (Raj Babbar) who just happens to be a senior police officer. But that would be logical, and logic is obviously not allowed in a film like Tevar.

Jacqueline Fernandez dances to Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan One of the most anticipated tracks from Bhushan Kumar's Roy featuring the Sri Lankan beauty Jacqueline Fernandes, 'Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan' was unleashed today across digit al platforms across t he country. An exuberant dance number, the song has been shot on a specially created set in Filmcity, Mumbai, recreating some of the landmark streets of Malaysia. The song has been shot in Mumbai itself in the span of two days and was choreographed by Ahmed Khan. Jacqueline's look in the song is uber chic and stylishly accessorised and the track was sung by none other than Baby Doll singer KanikaKapoor. The unusual lyrics are penned by Kumaar and the music is composed by Meet Brothers Anjjan. Bhushan Kumar who has received a great response on ROY music so far says, "After the party athem'SoorajDoobaHai' and the romantic track 'TuHaiKiNahi', we have the new song 'ChittiyaanKalaiyaan' for all the girls. After Baby Doll, Meet Brothers have composed this song, sung again by Kapoor, which

Deepika Padukone has a very interesting line up for the coming year. The actress has an interesting mix of projects where she will be working with the young guns and at the same time be seen cast alongside actors who are known for their powerful performances. The actress has been highly appreciated for her performances in sharing screen space with both the generation of actors and is likely to do the same in 2015 as well. She will be seen sharing screen space with Irrfan Khan and Amitabh Bachchan in Piku. Deepika has time and again earned praise for her performances from her directors, award juries and also her co-stars. In fact, recently while she worked with Naseeruddin Shah and Pankaj Kapoor in Finding Fanny they were all very high on praise for her. Both of the senior actors are known for their acting and body of work and hence praises from them are very valuable. Deepika has interesting films on her plate and will be seen starring in Tamasha, Piku and Bajirao Mastani in

2015. While Piku will revolve around the relationship of a father and his daughter played by Dippy and Big B, Tamasha will bring back the rock solid pairing of Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika on screen. Last time, they created magic on screen with a blockbuster Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and who knows, this time it might be the same way round. Bajirao Mastani being anot her Sanjay Leela Bhansali film is high on anticipation. Given that it stars the Ram Leela jodi back in yet another SLB

film, one can expect firecrackers this time. We should not forget that Deepika's effortless performance in Ram Leela had won a million hearts and with Bajirao Mastani coming towards the end of the year, 2015 might end on a high for the actress. She has been raining successes at the box office along with bringing critical acclaim for all her roles in the past two-three years. With 2013 bringing her the 'Reigning Queen of Bollywood' tag, will history repeat itself in 2015 as well ?

Farhan Akhtar who turned 41 today, is mighty excited about his next film as an actor Wazir. Prime reason being the opportunity to screen space with megast ar Amitabh Bachchan. The directoractor-singer-composer plays an ATS officer in the film pitted against wheelchair bound chess player, played by Big B. Farhan Akhtar went t hrough intense training to prepare for his role of an ATS officer Danish Ali in upcoming film Wazir where the actor will be seen sharing screen space with Amitabh Bachchan. Produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Rajkumar Hirani, the film is directed by Bejoy Nambiar and written by Chopra and

Abhijat Joshi. "Vidhu Vinod Chopra approached me for the role. He was very keen that I do the role of Danish Ali in the film. I met Abhijat and I found the story quite compelling. "My character is a hardboiled law enforcement officer. He is someone who deals with violence on a daily basis. It is a world I am not familiar with, so it took some amount of research and training," Farhan told PTI in an interview. Farhan said working with the megast ar was a great experience. He directed Bachchan 10 years ago in Lakshya. "You get to learn so much by just being with him (Bachchan). The film is predominantly about these two characters, so

we have a lot of scenes together. We both are bound by a bond in the film and find redemption in each other. The story is well-written and also has action and romance. It is a complete film and we enjoyed telling this story," Farhan said. "When I started the film, it was not that I wanted to change something or set any trend. I just wanted to tell this story which was very close to my heart. But yes it was a great start for me," he said. Farhan, who has also found success as a singer, director and producer, has his hands full this year with the release of Wazir and Dil Dhadakne Do, a multistarrer directed by sister Zoya and produced by his Excel Entertainment.

SPORTS ROUND Lokesh Rahul read criticism on Facebook, Twitter and ignored it After watching his ward Lokesh Rahul’s nightmarish international debut during the Boxing Day Test at MCG on television, Mangalorebased Samuel Jayraj thought that the family function planned in the evening would take his mind away from cricket. The 48-year-old had underestimated his family’s interest in cricket or Rahul. Everyone at the function wanted to talk about 22-year-old’s mindless heaves at Melbourne that had made him look out of place at the Test level. Even when Jayraj reached home, there was no respite. A relative would send him a message that read: “Sir, tell your boy not to play T20 in Test cricket. Only you can tell him.” Jayraj says, he resisted the temptation to relay these sentiments to his student. Instead, he sent a simple text to Rahul. “Be the best in whatever you do.” Promptly came the reply: “Thank You, Sir!” Despite the doubts, the coach knew deep

inside that Rahul had the technique to survive Test cricket. It was just the case of the occasion getting the better of the young cricketer, he believed. “He plays the horizontal bat shots only when he has settled. As for the pull and sweep, he plays those shots only after he crosses 40-50. At Melbourne, he was not playing the kind of game that has worked for him so far in his career,” says the coach. In Australia, Rahul didn’t quite shut himself out from

the criticism he was getting. His close friend and club mate, Sinan Abdul Khader, who regularly calls Australia these days, speaks about Rahul’s tough days after he had scored just 4 runs from two innings. “He saw all the criticism on Facebook and Twitter. But he told me that he was just going to ignore it and believed that he had the game to succeed. Even at the age-group level, his mental strength made him special,” Khader said.

Karnataka Around 10 days after a low-intensity bomb blast hit Bengaluru, the Karnat aka Police on Thursday arrested three people for their alleged links with banned terror outfit Indian Mujahideen (IM). The police, however, maintained that t he arrested IM suspects’ role in the recent blast has not been established yet. “Prima facie there is no evidence linking the three suspects with the recent blast in Bengaluru, but the same cannot be ruled out. We are probing into the matter and it is still in the preliminary stage,” Bengaluru City Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi said. Based on credible information provided by intelligence sources, the police raided the suspects' houses simultaneously in Pulikeshinagar (Bengaluru) and Jamia in Bhatkal. While businessmen Syed Ismail Afaq (34) and Saddam Hussain (35) were arrested in Bengaluru, MBA student Abdus Subur (24) was arrested in Bhat kal. All the t hree hailed from Bhatkal, where the IM was founded in 2005.The police recovered a large cache of explosives - Ammonium

Nitrate and gelatin slime which weighed more than three kilogramme, fuel oil, detonators, PVC pipes, circuitry boards, circuits and timers from their hideout in Bhatkal. In Bengaluru, they seized communication devices, mobile phones, digital timers and laptops from a suspect’s home. “From what we have recovered from the accused, it is clear that they were planning something big. All these raw materials, which are required to make Improvised Explosive Devices have been sourced locally. This is a significant catch for us. We have sent all the seized mat erials for forensic examination,” Reddi said.

The police said the three suspect s have already confessed that they are part of the IM. “They were merely acting upon the orders of their handler from a foreign country,” he said, adding that all the three men had regularly interacted with other IM members. The police have registered cases under Sections 3, 4, and 5 of Explosive Substances Act, Sections 10, 13, and 18 of Unlawful Activities Prevention Act and Sections 120 (b) and 121 (a) of the IPC. The sources in the police admitted the raids on the residences of the IM members were carried out upon an Intelligence Bureau tip-off.

New Delhi Ahead of Prime Minister's rally at t he Ramlila Maidan, the AAP today sought response from Narendra Modi over the "tall promises" made by the BJP during the last assembly and Lok Sabha election on conferring statehood to Delhi and slashing electricity tariff. The party said the BJP showed the statehood "lolipop" in the last assembly and Lok Sabha election and did not act on it.It has also launched a Twitter campaign #DelhiasksPMModi ahead of the rally and asked people as to what their expectations were from the Prime Minister.

"PM addressing Delhi tomorrow for the 1st time. What are your expectations from him tomorrow? "Tomorrow Modi ji addresses Delhi. He had promised full statehood to Delhi. Will he announce that tomorrow? Or will BJP do a U-turn on this issue also?" AAP's

Will not be chosen as Chief Minister again: Bihar CM Jitan Ram Manjhi Rupee rose to a four-week high on Thursday to close at 62.67/$ as domestic equity markets rebounded and foreign investors continued to buy bonds. Foreign banks and export ers were seen selling dollars, which helped the rupee rise to an intraday high of 62.59 against dollar. “Dollar flows into the debt market is supporting the rupee. We have seen good flow so far,” said Ashish

Parthasart hy, head of treasury at HDFC Bank. Currency dealers said the fact that foreign investors were buying Indian bonds despit e t he recent weakness in global markets on the back of worries over t he European Union had helped the rupee. Data from depositories showed t hat foreign invest ors bought $440 million of rupee bonds so far in January.

"I know that I'll not be chosen as chief minister again...I do not have any sadness over this...but the next CM shall be a dalit for continuat ion of welfare of SC & ST," Manjhi said at function of
