‘India, China to jointly identify project in capacity building in Afghanistan’ Qingdao : India and China today agreed that they will jointly move forward in identifying a specific project in the area of capacity building in Afghanistan, Foreign Secretary Vijay Gokhale said on Saturday, a move that could upset Pakistan. During the informal summit between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Wuhan in April, the two leaders had agreed to undertake a joint India-China economic project in Afghanistan. PM Modi today had detailed discussions with Xi on bilateral and global issues on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit here. Gokhale said that on Afghanistan there was a brief discussion on the projects. One of the outcomes of today’s meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi is that India and China have agreed that they will move forward in identifying a specific project initially in the area of capacity building, he said.

Action should be taken, investigations should be done,” party spokesperson Pawan Khera told reporters in the national capital. Lashing out at elements “attempting to politicise the issue”, he said “do not use a threat to the PM of India for petty politics”.

Monsoon arrived in Mumbai a day before its predicted landfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The weather agency has forecast thundershowers accompanied with gusty winds and heavy rains at many places for the next 24 hours.

Heavy rains lash Mumbai, throw life out of gear as monsoon makes landfall Mumbai : With the monsoon arriving in Maharashtra on Friday, it reached Mumbai and adjoining areas of the state on Saturday, as heavy rains threw life out of gear in Maximum City. Monsoon arrived in Mumbai a day before its predicted landfall, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The weather agency has forecast thundershowers accompanied with gusty winds and heavy rains at many places for the next 24 hours. Several parts were inundated as the Colaba observatory recorded 18 mm of rainfall while the Santacruz observatory registered 4.4 mm, according to IMD

Mumbai. Vehicular movement was adversely affected due to heavy flooding and diversions were put in many places to avoid traffic snarls. Delays in the schedule of suburban trains were reported as some trains of the Central Railway were late by 10 to 12 minutes due to the downpour. However, there was no cancellation of trains, an official told PTI.

According to airport officials, two flights had to be diverted due to bad weather. Due to the severe weather conditions, dozens of trees were uprooted leading to massive traffic jams in Navi Mumbai. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Deputy Municipal Commissioner Kishore Kshirsagar told reporters that areas like Hindmata, Dharavi and Parel received more than 100mm of rainfall, resulting in water-logging. He said road repair work had been undertaken at more than 120 places while no waterlogging was reported from AndheriKurla Road, Santacruz, Oberoi Mall and Lokhandwala Circle.

Divisive forces behind Pranab Mukherjee’s morphed photo: RSS

New Delhi : A day after former President Pranab Mukherjee visited Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) headquarters in Nagpur, the RSS said in a statement on Friday that some divisive political forces had posted a morphed photo of Mukherjee standing in a position of prayer during

recitation of Sangha Prarthana (prayer) at Thursday’s event. In the statement, RSS Sahsarkaryavah Manmohan Vaidya said that these forces initially tried to create an opposition to make Mukherjee refrain from attending the event. “And now these frustrated forces are doing all such dirty tricks

Email threat to PM: Maoists are fighting lost battle, end near, says Rajnath Singh

Jammu : A day after Pune police said they were probing an email that indicated a Maoist plan to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a “Rajiv Gandhi type incident” by “targeting his roadshows”, Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh Friday said the government was “always serious” about the security of the Prime Minister, and that Maoists were “fighting a lost battle” which is “ending”. Responding to queries from reporters on the Pune police claim, Singh, who was in Jammu on the second day of his visit to the state to review the law and order situation, said: “Hum apne Prime Minister ki security ko le kar barabar gambhir rahe hain. Aur Maoists ka jahan tak sawal hai, unkey barey mein kehna chahoonga ki is samay woh ek haari hui ladai lar rahe hain (We have always been serious about the security of our Prime Minister. So far as Maoists are concerned, I would like to say that they are fighting a lost battle).”

SCO Summit: This is the first time India is participating in the summit as a full-time member of the SCO. India, along with Pakistan, became full-time members during the 2017 summit in Kazakhstan.

Six weeks after Wuhan, Modi, Xi meet again; pacts signed amid talk on bilateral issues Qingdao : Building on the momentum from the informal summit in the Chinese city of Wuhan six weeks ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday held a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. Of the two bilateral agreements signed at Qingdao, the city in Shandong province on the east coast of India, one would allow India to export nonBasmati rice to China. Beijing had earlier been denying access to non-Basmati rice, claiming that it failed to meet its norms.India is the world’s largest rice exporter but sends a minuscule amount to China, which imports nearly five million tonnes annually for domestic consumption. China has been stating that rice from India does not meet its “phyto-sanitary” concerns. The other agreement

was on sharing hydrological data on the Brahmaputra. The Brahmaputra originates from Tibet and flows into Arunachal Pradesh and Assam. For India, hydrological data is helpful in preparing for floods in the Northeast. Under a previous agreement, Beijing is supposed to share the river data, but it stopped last year after the two armies had a 73-day faceoff at Doklam in the eastern sector. The

two sides also held discussions on other bilateral issues affecting the two countries. “Met this year’s SCO host, President Xi Jinping, this evening. We had detailed discussions on bilateral and global issues. Our talks will add further vigour to the India-China friendship,” Modi said in a tweet. The SCO Summit is scheduled to take place on Sunday, with talks expected to focus on terrorism and security.

Yeddyurappa’s comments come as dissident activities of the MLAs intensified in the Congress over not getting ministerial berths. The former chief minister, who is also the state BJP chief, asked his partymen to work as a strong opposition and prepare for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. “Several disgruntled young leaders and leaders from Congress and JD(S) are eager to join the BJP,” Yeddyurappa said. The Trump challenge to India Iran ties

On 8 May, the US, under President Donald Trump, pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal. The deal, also known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) is an agreement struck between Tehran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council and Germany (P5+1) over the former’s alleged nuclear weapons programme. Since then, Iranian foreign minister Javad Zarif has visited New Delhi to drum up support for its stance. This decision by Trump is now expected to open up the possibility of the US Congress legislating more sanctions on Iran. These sanctions, like before, will also bring IndiaIran ties to another challenging crossroads. Oil, expectedly, is going to be one of the most heavily affected commodities for buyers and sellers dealing with Tehran. The US Treasury has highlighted that entities buying and selling crude oil from Iran could be blacklisted, unless waivers are negotiated with the administration. Global companies such as French oil and gas giant Total and Danish shipping conglomerate A P Moller-Maersk have already distanced themselves from Iranian businesses. To put it in perspective, more than 80% of oil imported by India is carried by foreign oil tankers, as is their insurance, both being highly susceptible to American sanctions. This situation, however, is not new to New Delhi. It has the experience of having to choreograph an immense diplomatic dance to minimize damage to its relations with a bull-headed, survivalist Iran when the sanctions imposed by the Barack Obama administration to coerce Tehran into negotiations came into play. Prior to the first wave of sanctions, Iran was consistently in India’s list of top 3 suppliers of oil. Oil is not just the single biggest trade item, but also the most important Indo-Iran binding factor today. Remove oil from the picture, and they have the bare minimum between them when it comes to trade. It is also arguable that the India-led development of the port of Chabahar, marketed as a geostrategic home run, may fizzle out if the billions of dollars in annual oil trade is reduced significantly because of the JCPOA fallout. During the Obama administration as well, when India had a relatively good relationship with the White House, the US tightened the screws on the Manmohan Singh government—notwithstanding the temporary waivers for India to transfer parts of nearly $6 billion in payments for crude from Iran. While private sector refiners baulked, state entities continued to try and trade to maintain reasonable ties with an increasingly unreasonable and panicked Iran as its economy faltered. Oil being a globally traded commodity, and the US the prevailing power in international financial systems, critical business institution areas such as insurance and shipping distanced themselves from the Iranian oil trade.

The stuff that I am getting to do is out of the box, experimental and fun. So I don’t have the urge to get into the web platform. “The director is a friend and I had thought I will say no to doing short film right now, but the idea excited me, it is so compelling. He studied art history at NYU. If romance is brewing between the two, one thing is apparent, that Jen looks happy.

One of the humblest family – The Deols have never been dragged into any controversies. Bobby does realise his mistakes, laziness and now is all set to work hard to keep working in his second innings. I was prepared to work and from the last two to 3 years I have been working hard on myself to remain fit. I have done very few films but more and more people will see me before. This is the first film were everybody was in the gym before shoot and after shoots. It’s a film which needs us to be fit. Even the girls have done fantastic action in the film. SPORTS ROUNDUP

Will not take anything for granted in Intercontinental Cup final: Stephen

New Delhi: India might have blanked Kenya 3-0 in their previous encounter but head coach Stephen Constantine today said it counts for nothing and his boys will not take their opponents for granted in the finals of the Intercontinental Cup. Kenya romped into the final of the four-nation tournament after thrashing Chinese Taipei 4-0 in the last league game yesterday to set up the summit clash with hosts India. “Look, what we did in the roundrobin is done and dusted. When we go to the next game, you cannot take anything for granted and we will not take anything for granted,” Constantine

told reporters at the pre final media conference. “Kenya showed yesterday (against Chinese Taipei), that they are capable, especially for (set-pieces), and we need to be very careful and we respect them. But we will try to win the game,” he added. Constantine, who had made as many as seven changes to India’s starting line-up against New Zealand, said the hosts will field a full strength side tomorrow. “We will be at our full strength for this game (final). We have two central defenders who have been outstanding for us – Sandesh (Jhingan) and Anas, so that will help,” he said.

My dominance on clay is never routine, says Rafa Nadal Paris : Rafael Nadal says his domination at the French Open will not go on “for 10 more years” but watching the way he demolished Juan Martin del Potro on Friday to reach his 11th final in Paris it was hard to see when his reign would end. After a sticky first set in which Del Potro’s powerful groundstrokes and heavy serve earned the Argentine several chances to forge ahead, Nadal seized control with as devastating a display as he has ever produced on Philippe Chatrier court. His 6-4 6-1 6-2 victory means he has now reached his 24th Grand Slam final and equals Roger Federer’s record for most finals at a single major — Federer’s coming at Wimbledon. Only three times (once when he withdrew with an injury) has the Mallorcan not reached the French Open final since he first redefined claycourt tennis in 2005

as a sleeveless warrior. If Austrian Dominic Thiem does win on Sunday in what will be his first Grand Slam final he will join Novak Djokovic and Robin Soderling as the only two

players to down Nadal on his favourite claycourt battleground. Yet Nadal, whose all-time claycourt record now stands at 414-36 says nobody should assume his feats are routine and that each victory is celebrated like the first. “Today is a day to rejoice. When you’re in a final like Roland Garros, it’s a great happiness. Being in a final here is something I should rejoice about and be happy about,” he said.

Simona Halep shrugs off Sloane Stephens challenge to win French Open title New Delhi: World number one Simona Halep ended years of heartache to clinch her first Grand Slam title with 3-6 6-4 6-1 victory over American Sloane Stephens in the French Open final on Saturday. The popular Romanian, who had lost three major finals before Saturday, showed signs of nerves at first but recovered to outclass her 10th-seeded opponent. “Thanks guys it was amazing and I felt your support,” Halep, twice a runner-up in Paris before Saturday, told the

crowd who were chanting her name. “In the last game I couldn’t breathe, I just didn’t want to repeat what happened the other years. I dreamed of this moment since I started to play tennis and I can’t believe it.” U.S. Open champion Stephens used her powerful game to full effect to take the first set but then ran out of steam as Romania’s Halep completed a memorable victory. The American, who will break into the top five for the first time when the new rankings are released on Monday, broke Halep

in the fourth game before taking the first set after 41 minutes. The second set was tighter as the players traded breaks until Halep finally got back on level terms when Stephens hit a backhand wide on set point. Halep, who was beaten in the 2017 final despite holding a set and 3-0 lead against Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, kept up the momentum in the third set on Saturday to open up a 5-0 lead before earning a match point with a raging smash. Stevens netted a service return to bow out.

Mumbai: The rupee suffered a major blow and endured a sharp reversal in fortunes against the US currency on renewed worries over rising global crude prices and capital outflows. Breaking an extreme bullish uptrend, the home currency retreated sharply to end at a fresh one-week low of 67.50, capping a spectacular two-week upsurge. It had appreciated by a whopping 94 paise or 1.38 per cent in the recent pull back rally. Sustained demand for the greenback from state-run banks, likely on behalf of oil importers and some foreign portfolio investors predominantly weighed on the rupee front. The Indian unit touched a low of 67.79 before recouping some of its losses on suspected market intervention by the RBI. It was a highly volatile week for the forex market and witnessed wild swings following a sudden revival of the elasticity pessimism on hardening worries over fiscal slippage and higher inflation pressure after international crude oil prices hit a new three-year high. The selling bias appears to have re-emerged at the end of the week due to macro-economic concerns, a forex dealer said. Global crude prices were once again on an upward spiral leading to renewed fears over widening fiscal deficit and rising inflationary pressure. Earlier, the forex market sentiment was buoyed by the Reserve Bank retaining growth forecast for the current fiscal at 7.4 per cent on hopes of further boost to investments and higher consumption.

Mumbai: Market posted third straight weekly rise, registering modest gains in the week, up 216.41 points to close at 35,443.67, while the broader Nifty garnered 71.45 points to finish at 10,767.65, after the central bank maintained its neutral stance. Sustained buying by domestic institutional investors also boosted sentiment amid higher global cues. Overseas, US stocks closed higher yesterday, with major indexes posting their strongest week in months as investors brushed aside tensions between the US and major allies as a meeting of leaders of the Group of Seven industrialized nations got under way in Canada. Key indices ended with modest losses on first trading day of the week, led by slide in banking and realty stocks. The Sensex settled a tad above the psychological 35,000 level after sliding below that level in late trade. Stocks ended

volatile session of trade on Tuesday, with modest losses of 108.68 points to settle at 34,903.21. Domestic stocks logged modest gains in steady session of trade on Wednesday, after the central bank maintained its neutral stance while raising repo rate by 0.25 per cent, recovered by 275.67 points to end at 35,178.88. The Sensex settled above the psychologically important 35,000 mark. Local stocks logged sharp gains on Thursday, on upbeat global cues. The market ended the volatile session almost flat on Friday, as losses in banks shares negated gains in IT and pharma shares. Weak global cues also capped gains. The BSE Sensex started the week higher at 35,503.24 points, the benchmark hovered between 35,628.49 and 34,784.68 before finishing the week at 35,443.67, showing a rise of 216.41 or 0.61 per cent.

10 depts to enforce air action plan international

AHMEDABAD: After forming a high-level task force for identifying key sources of air pollution, especially particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM1) in Ahmedabad, the Gujarat government has circulated the first detailed Air Action Plan draft plan for the city amongst 10 departments that will in future co-ordinate and conduct joint raids to enforce the plan. Once enforced in Ahmedabad, the AAP will be extended to Surat city in a few months’ time. The committee has to submit a report to the government and suggest a few additions to the draft AAP by July 5. Maldives election body sets September date for presidential election

Male : Maldives presidential election will be held in September, the country’s Election Commission chief said late on Friday, a week after the European Union and some Western nations urged the country to hold a transparent, credible poll. The Maldives, home to 400,000 people and best known as a tropical paradise for tourists, has experienced political unrest since Mohamed Nasheed, its first democratically elected leader, was forced to quit amid a mutiny by police in 2012. Nasheed, the sole candidate in last week’s primary election held by his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), was convicted of terrorism charges in 2015 and sentenced to 13 years in prison after a controversial and widely criticised trial. Maldives police executing a court order last week disrupted the MDP’s effort to pick Nasheed as its candidate for the election. Elections Commission chief Ahmed Shareef said the 2018 presidential poll will be held on Sept. 23 in “the most transparent and open” manner. Shareef said observers from eight countries and the EU and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) would be invited.
