Short News Jharkhand: Driver lynched by mob after truck crushes child to death Dumka : A truck driver was on Sunday lynched by a mob in Jharkhand’s Dumka district after his vehicle ran over and killed a two-year-old child, police said. The child was crushed under the wheels of the truck at Simanijore village near National Highway114A in the district around 3 pm, they said. The incident happened near the boy’s house in the village when he was walking on the road with his sister, police said. Shikaripara police station in-charge Manoj Kumar Thakur said the mob caught the driver, Mohan Rai, and thrashed him to death following the accident. The driver was a resident of Motihari district in Bihar, he said. Deputy Superintendent of Police, Pujya Prakash said the situation in the village is peaceful and police patrolling has been increased.

MNS extends support to Bharat bandh Mumbai: A Day after the Mumbai Congress announced a bandh in the city on Monday and sought support of other political parties for a joint agitation against the issue of fuel price rise, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray on Sunday extended his party’s support for the bandh call. On Sunday morning, the MNS chief held a meeting with senior party leaders and office bearers from Mumbai and Thane to discuss the proposed bandh. “The MNS extends its full support to the bandh and will actively participate in it,” said Thackeray. He slammed the BJP-led Union government for imposing heavy taxes on fuel. “The country’s policies cannot be based on the whims and fancies of one person. Demonetisation was a huge blunder and its repercussions caused our economy to plummet to a precarious state.

Army recalibrating counter-insurgency strategy in Manipur

New Delhi : The Army is looking at recalibrating its counter-insurgency strategy in the militancy-hit North East in the wake of an “overcautious” approach being adopted by its field units following the Supreme Court’s strict orders to the CBI probing a number of cases of alleged extrajudicial killings in Manipur, military so urces said. They said the Army headquarters was “deeply worried” over the rising casualty figures on the part of the Army in Manipur as well as a marked slowdown in the intensity of its operations against militants in the state, where over 10 major militant groups are active. The top brass of the Army held a detailed deliberation last month to look at recalibration of operations since there appears to be a “manifested caution” being exercised because of the directives of the court on AFSPArelated cases, the sources said. The Supreme Court has passed a number of orders to the CBI in the last few months directing the central probe agency to thoroughly investigate the alleged extra-judicial killings and fake encounters by the Army, Assam Rifles and police in Manipur, saying violation of human rights cannot be tolerated. In July last year, the court, following a PIL seeking a probe into as many as 1,528 cases of alleged extra-judicial killings in Manipur, constituted a special investigation team.

The vice president also expressed anguish over the politicisation of incidents of lynching, saying such cases should not be linked with political parties.

Rising fuel prices, falling rupee: Those involved in lynchings cannot call Bharat Bandh today, Congress themselves nationalists, says Venkaiah Naidu claims support of 21 parties

New Delhi : A UNITED opposition will observe Bharat Bandh on Monday over rising fuel prices and weakening of the rupee, scaling up their offensive against the government on an issue which they hope will have resonance among the people less than seven months away from Lok Sabha elections. The Congress, which announced the bandh last week, claimed as many as 21 opposition parties have extended support. It said a number of traders’ bodies and industry chambers too have conveyed support to the nationwide shutdown, the first joint political action by the opposition in several months. Leaders of opposition parties will sit in a dharna at Rajghat, tweeted Congress leader Randeep Singh Surjewala. Sources said UPA leader Sonia Gandhi may participate in the protest. The Congress has been heavily critical of the government over a variety of issues but has not been able to launch a strong movement on the ground. Several leaders in the party

had been urging the leadership to launch street protests and agitations instead of fighting the government only through social media and media conferences. On Sunday, the Congress reiterated its demand for bringing petrol and diesel under GST claiming that it will provide some relief to the people. “Once they bring it under GST automatically petrol and diesel prices will fall by 15 to 18 rupees and the cascading impact of increase in petroleum prices also, would be reduced once it is brought down by bringing it under the GST. We are also asking the government to take measures to arrest this steep fall of rupee, because the value of rupee crossing 72 to a dollar is something which is not good for the economy and also it has an impact on other things,” senior Congress leader Ajay Maken told reporters. “So, these are the two main things we want the government to improve,” he added.

Modi also took potshots at the idea of a United Opposition or ‘Mahagathbandhan’, saying that those who do not see eye-to-eye and those who do not have any ideological similarity are willing to come together just to defeat us.

‘Ajay Bharat, Atal Bhajpa’ is PM’s new slogan for 2019 elections, Amit Shah says BJP will rule for next 50 years

New Delhi : Setting the tone for the Lok Sabha elections next year and upcoming assembly polls in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, Prime Minister Narendra Modi coined a new term, ‘Ajey Bharat, Atal Bhajpa’ in his valedictory speech at the BJP national executive meet in New Delhi on Sunday. Modi also attacked the Opposition and the idea of Mahagathbandhan besides highlighting the achievements of his government. Describing ‘Ajay Bharat, Atal Bhajpa’, an ode to former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, Modi said the phrase stood for “an India which is not to be subjugated by anyone and BJP which remains firmly committed to its principle”. On Vajpayee, Modi said that the late leader was like a sun in the sky and we will have to become ‘little stars’ to carry

his ideas forward. The prime minister also took potshots at the idea of a United Opposition or ‘Mahagathbandhan’, saying that those who do not see eye-toeye and those who do not have any ideological similarity are willing to come together just to defeat us. He also said that no one, not even smaller parties, was ready to accept the leadership of the Congress in such an alliance. Modi, however, said that there is a need for a capable Opposition in a democracy. But those who were a failure in government are also a failure as the Opposition, the prime minister said. He castigated the Opposition for not fighting over real issues but lies. He said that the government will counter the Opposition’s falsehood through “the great work we have done in four years”.

New Delhi : Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has said those involved in incidents of hate and lynching cannot call themselves nationalists while holding that legislation alone was not enough as a change in societal behaviour was required to prevent such cases. The vice president also expressed anguish over the politicisation of incidents of lynching, saying such cases should not be linked with political parties.“Societal change (is needed). This (lynching) is not because of this party

or that party. The moment you attribute it to these parties, the cause is lost. That is what is happening, let me be very frank,” he said. Asked about the incidents of hate and lynching, he said it was not a new trend and there were such instances in the

past also. “It is the societal behaviour that has to change… when you kill the other man, how can you call yourself nationalist. On the basis of religion, on the basis of caste or on the basis of colour, or on the basis of gender, you discriminate.

Rajasthan: Three killed, 25 injured in bus–truck collusion

Kota : Three persons were killed and 25 others injured Sunday in a headon collision between a speeding truck and a Rajasthan roadways bus near Basni village in Bundi district, police said. The deceased were identified as Sube Singh (42), Hanuman Singh and Ramswroop Parajapat (65), said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at Hindoli police station Radheshyam Choudhary The accident occurred at 10.30 am when the speeding truck, crossing a road divider, plunged

onto the wrong side of the road and collided head-on with the Rajasthan roadways bus that was going to Ajmer from Kota, the ASI said. Three of the 25 injured are being treated at the Maharao Bhim Singh (MBS) hospital here, while the other injured were discharged after first-aid, he said. The deceased were identified as Sube Singh (42), Hanuman Singh and Ramswroop Parajapat (65), said Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) at Hindoli police station Radheshyam Choudhary.

Congress asks EC to prohibit poll-bound states from using public funds for ads

New Delhi : The Congress on Sunday shot off a letter to the Election Commission of India, asking it to prohibit the pollbound states of Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh from issuing any advertisement by using public money to serve their respective party’s political benefits. Calling it an “abhorrent practice” and blatant misuse of funds, Congress said the BJP governments of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh were indulging in extravagant publicity at the state’s expense through their campaigns for the upcoming Assembly elections. “By way of these yatras — Jan Ashirwad

Yatra (MP), Gaurav Yatra (Rajasthan) and Vikas Yatra (Chhattisgarh) — it becomes impossible for the common man to draw any distinction between the political agenda sought to be propagated and the bona fide schemes or programmes of the state machinery, which too are then given a political colouring,” the letter, written by Congress leader Vivek Tankha, mentioned. Addressed to Chief Election Commissioner O P Rawat, the letter by Congress alleged that officers of the state machinery were ordered to mobilise and aggregate paid crowd and to keep the media satisfied, huge advertisements

were doled out. “Additionally, a large number of websites are extended bounties to keep the interest of ruling party in mind,” the letter said. Tankha, who is the chairman of the AICC Legal, Human Rights and RTI Department, asked the election watchdog to issue peremptory orders to the Telangana chief secretary to ensure that no public money is used by the caretaker government on advertisements till the elections. “This should also include taking off all hoardings, banners and advertisements etc. presently in public domain before the dissolution of the state assembly,” the letter said.

Farooq Abdullah trying to outsmart PDP by appearing to side with separatists: J&K BJP Jammu : The Jammu and Kashmir BJP said Sunday that National Conference president Farooq Abdullah tried to “outsmart” the PDP by appearing to side with separatists with his threat to boycott assembly and parliamentary polls. It claimed Abdullah was trying “all tricks” to fill the political void created by the PDP in the Valley after it had formed a coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir. The coalition collapsed in June, resulting in imposition of Governor’s rule in the state. The comments from BJP state spokesperson Anil Gupta came in response to Abdullah’s threat yesterday that the NC may boycott the assembly and Lok Sabha polls if the Centre does not take

effective steps to protect Article 35A. Incorporated in the Constitution by a 1954 Presidential Order, Article 35A accords special rights and privileges to the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir and bars people from outside the state from acquiring any immovable property in the state. It is facing legal challenge in the Supreme Court. “Farooq has been trying to fill the gap created by PDP after it formed the coalition government by taking on New Delhi and obliquely associating the NC with the Hurriyat. “But now that the PDP is also trying to regain the lost turf, Farooq has tried to outsmart the PDP by a firm handshake with the separatists,” Gupta said in a statement.

Will make every sacrifice to preserve Article 35 A : Mehbooba Mufti

Srinagar : Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister and PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti Sunday said her party will make every sacrifice to preserve Article 35 A of the Constitution, which is facing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court. Addressing a workers meeting of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) at Kangan in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district, Mehbooba said her party was committed to preserve the sanctity of Article 35 A.

How China became enemy no. 1 for the US

One of the remarkable things about the Donald Trump era is how significantly the American conversation about China has changed. As recently as 2016, Barack Obama argued that a weak China that could not contribute to solving global problems was more dangerous than a strong and potentially aggressive China. The Trump administration, by contrast, has identified China as the biggest longterm threat to US geopolitical and geo-economic interests. Amid the chaos of the Trump presidency, it can be hard to tell what has changed permanently and what has shifted only temporarily. Yet this transformation in US views of China seems likely to outlast Trump’s tenure. Polls show that the American public has grown more skeptical of Beijing’s intentions. In 2016, 82% of Americans saw China’s ongoing military buildup as a somewhat serious or very serious concern. More recently, the number of Americans considering China the greatest immediate threat tripled from 2017 to 2018. For nearly 25 years, there was a bipartisan consensus on the need for intensive engagement with Beijing. Now, one can see the outlines of a nascent—if still incomplete— consensus stressing the need for stiffer competition. That consensus begins with intensifying concern about the national security risks a rising China poses. Although the foreign policy establishment often finds itself at odds with Trump and his America First agenda, when it comes to China most members of that establishment broadly agree with the way the Trump administration defines the China threat. As Xi has reached for power and influence on the global stage, the perception that China is determined to unseat the US as the dominant actor in the Asia-Pacific—and perhaps globally—has become more widespread among informed observers of US policy. So has the belief that efforts to change Beijing’s behaviour and limit its ambitions through persistent economic and diplomatic engagement have failed to produce the desired results. Earlier this year, two former high-ranking Democratic foreign-policy officials — Kurt Campbell and Ely Ratner — wrote an article describing the China challenge in roughly the same terms as Trump’s National Security Strategy. It is hard to imagine the next administration’s strategy identifying China as anything other than the most formidable great-power challenger the US has faced in decades. The nascent consensus on China also reflects that fact that Beijing has come to represent a major ideological threat. In the 1990s and early 2000s, it was widely assumed that ideological conflict was a thing of the past, because Beijing would eventually liberalize both economically and politically. Now, that rosy scenario has largely been abandoned.

R Madhavan: Talent and hard work needed to make name in any cinema

Mumbai: R Madhavan, who began his acting career on the small screen and went on to make his name in both the southern and Hindi film industry, says a combination of talent, hard work and perseverance is needed to cement one’s space in cinema anywhere in the world. Asked about his take on whether actors from southern India face any problem being accepted in Bollywood, Madhavan said over the phone: “I don’t think that’s the case.” “If you’re talented and hardworking, you will get what you deserve, eventually. It also depends on what actors want to do and

what makes them happy. There are actors who are sticking to one genre and are happy. There are also people who are doing multiple genres, and they are happy too.” “Having said that, you need to have a combination of talent, hard work and perseverance to make a name in any cinema you enter.” Known for films like Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein, 3 Idiots, Rang De Basanti, Tanu Weds Manu and its sequel Tanu Weds Manu Returns and Saala Khadoos, the actor will be soon seen hosting National Geographic’s new series Mega Icons, premiering on September 24.

Hollywood - Bollywood Deepika Padukone on sharing depression battle: It was not about being brave or revolutionary

New Delhi : Actor Deepika Padukone may have been vocal about her battle with depression, but the actor says while opening up her aim was not to look “brave”. The 32-year-old star said when she shared her struggles for the first time, she just wanted to be “honest” with herself and her fans. “For me coming out with my experience and sharing it with the world really was about being honest. At that point, four years ago, I didn’t think about it as being brave. I didn’t think that it was meant to be revolutionary” she said. Deepika said she felt it was important for her to share “something that had changed my life. And something that I felt had a lot of stigma when I was experiencing it. There wasn’t much awareness…even we weren’t familiar with what I was going through.” “There was also this feeling that ‘Maybe we should not talk about it and keep it hush. So there was a lack of awareness and there was a lot of stigma.” The Padmaavat star said that it was her mother, Ujjala Padukone, who realised that she was suffering from depression. “In my case, I didn’t know what I was feeling or going through and fortunately, it was my mother who was my caregiver and recognised my symptoms in the early stages.”

Actor Deepika Padukone says that everyone should take time out for themselves without feeling guilty because everyone has a story to tell and people should not be quick to judge and label others.

It is illogical to keep taking risks: Shahid Kapoor

Mumbai : It’s his passion for acting that makes Shahid Kapoor push himself as a performer, but he is also aware of the fact that taking too many risks as an actor is “illogical”. Shahid made his way into the hearts of the audience with his charming looks in films like Ishq Vishk, Vivah and startled everyone with his performance in Kaminey, Haider and Udta Punjab. “It is illogical to keep taking risks and doing different things but there is a need to rediscover yourself every time. Today, the audience wants different things,” he said.

Mumbai: Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma starrer Sui Dhaaga’s new song “Khatar Patar” is out. The melodious number, which has been sung by Papon, depicts the struggle of Varun aka Mauji, who wants to start a company of his own and make products that are ‘made in India.’ The song showcases how Mauji brings everything together, from starting a firm and getting people to work, to actually making sellable products. Sui Dhaaga – Made in India is about pride and selfreliance, which tries to bring back traditional art forms and handicrafts in focus through the story of Mauji and Mamta, played by Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma, respectively. Earlier, talking about the film Varun Dhawan had said, “With Sui Dhaaga — Made In India I am trying to mix the mass and class (films) together.”

“I want to grow and reach out to a wider audience. I want to tell stories that are new, different and exciting without having to sacrifice on any creative cravings

that the team might have. It is a tough combination,” he added. The actor said the continuous media glare and scrutiny do not bother or scare him.

Laila Majnu box office collection Day 2: Sajid Ali film earns Rs 80 lakh

Mumbai: Laila Majnu did not exactly have an ideal start at the box office. The Sajid Ali film could collect only Rs 80 lakh after two days, as per Bollywood Hungama. The film is directed by Sajid Ali and is co-written by Sajid and his better-known filmmaker brother Imtiaz Ali. Balaji Motion Pictures and PI Pictures are the production houses behind it. Laila Majnu stars Avinash Tiwari and Tripti Dimri. The Indian Express film critic

Shalini Langer gave the film a negative review. Her 1-star reads, “Imtiaz, the writer and “presenter”, says he always wanted to make this film and when he looked around for the right “fresh” guy, chanced upon whom but brother Sajid. Sajid, the director, said yes, and looking around in turn for a suitably “exotic” place, chanced upon what but Kashmir, as his wife “belongs to Srinagar”. Sajid says he also wanted to make a film that told the real story of Kashmir’s youth.

Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja look lovestruck in new set of photos

New Delhi : Sonam Kapoor and Anand Ahuja have been a trend-setting couple in terms of fashion, romance and fun. When the two come together on your social media timeline, their infectious camaraderie is bound to leave a smile on your face. The two were

recently in Delhi for an event. Sonam was in the capital for a jewellery brand’s show. She was the showstopper for the event. As she took over the stage like a royal princess, Anand rooted for her as an audience. Sonam has often been vocal about the bond she shares with Anand. The

actor’s husband, who is a businessman, had earlier revealed how Sonam is the person who gives him confidence in life. He had said, “She gives me a lot of confidence. Sonam’s very black and white. She knows what’s wrong and what’s right, and is not afraid to say it.”

Love is the hero of Manmarziyaan: Abhishek Bachchan New Delhi : On the very day when the Supreme Court emphasised on equal love by discriminalising homosexuality, striking down Section 377, Chandigarh was celebrating not just the verdict but also a love story that will unfold on the screen when the film Manmarziyaan releases on September 14. The cast of the Anurag Kashyap-directed film — Abhishek Bachchan, Taapsee Pannu and Vicky Kaushal — were in the city for its promotion. In his first love story set in Punjab, mainly Amritsar, the director had previously remarked that if he

could evoke the spirit and soul of the city in the film, he would consider it his victory. Back on screen after a gap of two years, Bachchan, sporting a red turban and beard, seems comfortable in his skin and with playing the character of Robbie in Manmarziyaan. The actor describes the film as a “quintessential love story for this generation”. He says, “The love story is very pertinent to women and their outlook towards the emotion. The woman in the film is free from all conformities and has the freedom to express herself. She feels that no one has

the right to judge or shackle her. Both the men in her life, Kaushal and I, don’t want Rumi (Pannu) to change herself in any way. There are no tangibles in love, no questions asked, for you can’t quantify the emotion. Love is the hero. The film is made through the eyes of a woman and emphasises on the free spirit of love, like the Supreme Court judgement,” says Bachchan. A huge admirer of Kashyap’s films, collaborating and working on the film, says the actor, was a journey that helped him discover something new.

US Open 2018: Naomi Osaka’s Grand Slam dream proves a nightmare for Serena Williams

New Delhi : US Open champion Naomi Osaka grew up dreaming of competing against Serena Williams in a Grand Slam final but never would have dared to go as far as to think her idol would be reduced to tears in a drama-filled match.Osaka showed nerves of steel on Saturday to secure the biggest win of her life and become Japan’s first Grand Slam singles champion but the 20-year-old’s triumphant moment was lost in the controversy surrounding Williams. “Everyone was cheering for her, I am sorry it had to end like this,” Osaka said during the on-court trophy presentation. “It was always my dream to play Serena in the U.S. Open finals so I am just so glad I was able to do that.” While Osaka was the better player on the day, the match will

long be remembered for the bizarre turn it took during the second set when Williams unleashed a furious rant at chair umpire Carlos Ramos. Williams first disputed a warning for coaching, was given a point penalty for smashing a racket and then was handed a game violation after unleashing a torrid volley of abuse at Ramos. Through it all, a laser-focused Osaka said she did not even notice the outbursts as she kept her eyes on the ultimate prize with a sense of cool that was well beyond her years, especially considering the stage she was on. “I really didn’t hear anything that was going on … I felt like I really had to focus during this match because she’s such a great champion, and I know that she can come back from any point,” Osaka told reporters.

India vs England: Alastair Cook’s farewell knock helps hosts seize control

SPORTS ROUNDUP

India vs England: CoA may discuss England tour with Ravi Shastri

London : The Committee of Administrators (CoA) in all likelihood will have a discussion with chief coach Ravi Shastri on Indian team’s below par show in England. India lost the ODI as well as Test series to the hosts and the CoA is expected to assess the team’s performance after the end of the fifth Test. ”There is a CoA meeting in Mumbai on September 11. While the main discussion will be on implementation of new constitution, the performance of England series will certainly come up for discussion,” a senior BCCI official told PTI today. ”It will be CoA’s call whether they want to meet Ravi Shastri in person or seek his feedback via written

report. At this point in time, Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) is non functional. Till elections are held, it’s CoA which will be in charge, so it’s only imperative that they will assess the performance” he added. If a meeting happens, then chairman of selectors MSK Prasad’s opinion will also be sought. There is a convention for more than three decades of manager’s report being submitted after each and every series (home and away) but usually the coach never gives any report. However, contrary to popular belief the manager does not have the mandate to review team’s performance. ”The manager’s report is a templated one.

London : Alastair Cook, as unflappable as ever, led from the front in the final innings of his record-breaking test career as England built a commanding 154-run lead over India at the Oval on Sunday. Probably the longest standing ovation heard at the south London ground welcomed Cook to the crease for his 291st and last test knock midway through the late-summer afternoon. England’s most prolific test run scorer began in nervy fashion as India battled hard to stay in contention on day

three of the fifth and final match of the series. But by stumps he was set fair on 46 not out having ridden his luck at times in search of a second half century in his 161st test, having made a stubborn 71 on Friday. Thirty more runs on Monday would take him past Sri Lankan Kumar Sangakkara’s 12,400 and into fifth on the all-time list. With Joe Root looking fluent on 29 and England having eight wickets in hand Cook has every chance of signing off his magnificent international career with a victory. India

had mounted a spirited fightback earlier to limit their first-innings deficit to a modest 40 thanks to a superb 86 by Ravindra Jadeja and a debut half century from Hanuma Vihari. Having begun the day in a hole on 174-6 in reply to England’s 332, India were eventually all out for 292. India’s resistance frustrated James Anderson’s quest to grab the three wickets he needs to overtake Australia’s Glenn McGrath’s all-time testwicket record of 563 for a fast bowler.

Rafael Nadal to miss Davis Cup semi-final due to injury

New Delhi : Spain’s Rafael Nadal will miss their Davis Cup semi-final next weekend against France owing to the knee injury he picked up during the US Open semi-final. Nadal pulled out after the second set in New York against Juan Martin Del Potro for his second retirement in a slam this year. Spanish tennis federation and the World No 1 confirmed the expected development. “Rafa Nadal will not be able to compete in the tie against France in Lille. The knee injury suffered last night (Friday) at the US Open is stopping him from playing this semi-final,” Spain team captain

Sergi Bruguera said in a statement. “We hope he recovers soon and we thank him for his support for the Spanish team in the Davis Cup.” Nadal posted multiple tweets on the development stating he will work on recovering and had kept Davis Cup into account while deciding not to play Cincinnati as the US Open tune-up tournament. “Hello everyone, already on my way home, besides having missed the opportunity to play a grand Slam final in New York, I can not play the Davis Cup this coming weekend in Lille against France. I had made a good schedule thinking about my goals,

Only 33 per cent Indians save regularly for retirement

New Delhi: Only a third in India are regularly saving for their retirement while just 33 per cent of working-age respondents globally are putting anything aside for their later life, according to a report. The lack of saving is likely linked to low knowledge of how much money is needed in retirement, as well as many prioritising their immediate financial situation over planning for their older years, according to HSBC’s the ‘Future of retirement: Bridging the gap’ report.“For many, retirement is thankfully no longer a short period tacked on to the end of our life. It can be a long and very fulfilling part of a person’s life. But with that, our needs at 65 can be very different from our needs at 75 or 85, with very different financial implications,” said HSBC India head of retail banking and wealth management Ramakrishnan S. Ipsos on behalf of HSBC carried out the research for this report online among 16,000 adults in 16 markets, including Australia, Argentina, Canada, China, Malay sia, Mexico, Singapore, Taiwan, France, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Turkey, the UAE, the UK and the USA. It revealed that only 19 per cent of working age people are saving for future nursing or care home fees.

including the Davis Cup, one of the reasons for not playing Cincinnati. Very sad to not be able to try and help the team to play the final and I am convinced that those who are going to play will do it in the best possible way. I wish everyone the best – I will be cheering like just another fan.” Nadal will be replaced by world number 52 Albert Ramos-Vinolas for the September 14-16 clash against the defending champions as Spain look to reach their first final since 2012. The tie will be played on clay in Lille. “I know what I have,” Nadal said after the US Open semi-final.

Low GST collections ring alarm New Delhi: Alarmed by a nearly four-fold rise in the goods and services tax (GST) compensation to states for June-July, the finance ministry is crafting a strategy to shore up tax revenues and engaging with states to identify issues hindering their collections. Finance secretary Hasmukh Adhia has started meeting GST officers, both from central and state tax departments, in the state capitals to understand issues plaguing the GST collections. There has been a spike in the bi-monthly GST compensation paid to the states by the Centre. The Centre paid Rs 14,930 crore to compensate states for revenue loss incurred in June and July, a nearly four-fold jump compared with Rs 3,899 crore paid for the months of April and May. “A strategy is to be devised to shore up GST revenues. The amount of compensation to be paid to each state varies every month and there is no set pattern,” an official said. The reason for increased compensation also varied from state to state. For instance, in one of the cases, a state saw a huge outgo on account of value-added tax (VAT) refund following a court verdict, the official said. A discussion to shore up revenues has already happened with four states – Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Puducherry and Jammu & Kashmir – while a dialogue with Bihar and Uttarakhand is slated to take place later this month. The official said that one of the options being considered is stepping up anti-evasion measures with a focus on top 30 taxpayers, but added that the central government will ensure that the fix to the problem will not be intrusive on businesses.

RBI may conduct OMO this week to ease liquidity, say bankers

Mumbai: The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) is likely to conduct an open market operation (OMO) purchase this week to infuse liquidity into the banking system, which is further going to tighten on account of advance tax payments, say bankers. The liquidity shortfall in the banking system at present, according to them, is pegged at Rs 50,000-60,000 crore, on account of intervention by the apex bank in the foreign exchange market to curb volatility in the rupee. It is set to reduce further as companies will have to file their advance tax by September 15. “Nearly Rs 50,000-60,000 crore of additional liquidity will go out of the system due to advance tax payments. RBI is expected to pump in liquidity into the system through OMOs this week,” a treasurer of a state-run bank said. Under the

OMOs, RBI buys certain government securities from the market, which thereby provides liquidity to the system. The size of this week’s OMO buyback could be Rs 10,000 crore, the treasurer said. “When RBI intervenes in the foreign exchange market, the rupee liquidity is being sucked out of the system. So to that extent, the RBI will pump in liquidity,” said another banker. The central bank has been intervening into the foreign exchange market to check rupee volatility, which touched a lifetime low of 72.11 against the US dollar in the intra-day trade Thursday. It closed at 71.73 Friday, after opening at 71.95. Since April 13, the country’s foreign exchange reserves have depleted by nearly USD 26 billion due to the RBI’s intervention in the foreign exchange market.

Gujarat: As cotton crop fails, Amreli farmer kills self, his wife fights for life in hospital Rajkot : Four days after a farmer committed suicide allegedly due to crop failure and mounting debt at Chandgadh village of Amreli district, his wife’s condition remains critical. According to the police, 43-year-old Bharat Khuman had consumed poison at his agricultural farm on September 5. He was rushed to a private hospital in Amreli where he died. Hours after learning that Khuman had attempted suicide, his shocked wife, Labhu, who was at home, also consumed poison and tried to end her life. She is admitted to a hospital in Amreli town, police said. Khuman’s younger brother, Ramku, told police that his brother, who owned 20 bigha, had availed a crop loan as well as loans to dig up a well and build a shed on his farm. However, his cotton crop had failed this year due to lack of rain and therefore, the farmer was very worried on how to repay the debt. “The victim’s brother told us that he

was under debt and that he committed suicide after his crop failed. Since the victim’s wife also tried to kill herself and is undergoing treatment, we have not been able to enquire into the reasons that led him to commit suicide. The victim has not left behind any suicide note. We are waiting for his wife to recover to enquire in the matter further,” Amreli taluka Sub-Inspector Hiral Segaliya told The Indian Express on Sunday. The S-I said that they were yet to ascertain the amount of loan availed by Khuman. Incidentally, parts of Amreli district witnessed very heavy rain in early July that led to a flood-like situation, but some other parts remained dry with rainfall deficit, this monsoon. Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition Paresh Dhanani on Sunday visited the family of Khuman and condoled his death. Chandgadh village is part of Amreli assembly constituency which is represented by Dhanani in the Assembly.

Gujarat: Hardik Patel Surat Civic Body To discharged from hospital Use Aadhaar to Deal but hunger strike continues with Stray Cattle

Rajkot : Patidar leader Hardik Patel, who has been on an indefinite hunger strike for the last 16 days, was discharged from a private hospital in Ahmedabad on Sunday. He was then taken to his home where he continued his protest. The Patidar leader, who was hospitalised on Friday after his health deteriorated, alleged that the government has stationed thousands of police personnel on the road leading to his home to stop his supporters from joining him. The police reportedly stopped a few reporters and cameramen following the Patidar leader and beat them when they attempted to enter his home, PTI

reported. Patel condemned the alleged police action. Patel started his fast unto death on August 25 to demand reservation for his community under the Other Backward Classes category and a farm loan waiver. Last week, he prepared a will, naming his parents and sister, a gaushala (cow shelter) and the kin of the 14 Patidars who died during the quota agitation in 2015 as his inheritors. Several political leaders such as former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav have urged Patel to end his hunger strike immediately, saying his “services are needed for this country to fight further for good causes”.

Ahmedabad: In a bid to curb the menace of stray cattle, mostly cows, roaming on the city streets, the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has developed a system of eartagging such animals and linking it with the Aadhaar number of their owners. Each ear tag carries a Cattle Registration Number (CRN) that is linked with the Aadhaar number of the cattle owner. It helps the SMC to identify, trace and penalise the owners for letting their cattle wander on the streets and cause inconvenience to people and traffic, he said. The civic body has so far pinned plastic tags with serial numbers to the ears of

around 25,000 stray animals across the city and linked them with the Aadhaar numbers of around 1,500 cattle owners, market superintendent of SMC, Praful Mehta, said. “We have created a computerised database of around 25,000 such stray animals belonging to around 1,500 people. The CRN is linked with the Aadhaar number of the owners. Since the city limits have expanded, this nuisance has grown. I think we are yet to register another 25,000 such stray cattle,” Mehta said. He said that using the number tagged on the ears of the bovines, the civic authorities can trace their owners easily, as the latter’s phone number and address are registered in the database.

Ayatollah Khamenei urges Iran’s military to ‘scare off’ enemy

Dubai : Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei on Sunday urged Iran’s armed forces to increase their power to “scare off” the enemy, according to his official website, as the country faces increased tension with the United States. US President Donald Trump in May withdrew from Iran’s nuclear agreement with world powers – a deal aimed at stalling Tehran’s nuclear capabilities in return for lifting some sanctions – and ordered the reimposition of US sanctions that had been suspended under the deal. “Increase your power as much as you can, because your power scares off the enemy and forces it to retreat,” the website quoted Khamenei as saying at a graduation ceremony for cadets of Iran’s regular armed forces. “Iran and the Iranian nation have resisted America and proven that, if a nation is not afraid of threats by bullies and relies on its own capabilities, it can force the superpowers to retreat and defeat them,” Khamenei said.

China’s trade surplus with US hits record $31 billion

Beijing : China’s trade surplus with the United States widened to a record $31 billion in August as exports surged despite American tariff hikes, potentially adding fuel to President Donald Trump’s battle with Beijing over industrial policy. Customs data showed exports to the United States rose 13.4 percent to $44.4 billion, ticking up from July’s 13.3 percent growth. Imports of US goods rose 11.1 percent to $13.3 billion, decelerating from the previous month’s 11.8 percent. That could help reignite U.S. demands that Beijing narrow its trade gap, which has temporarily been overshadowed by their clash over complaints China steals or pressures foreign companies to hand over technology. Customs data showed exports to the United States rose 13.4 percent to $44.4 billion, ticking up from July’s 13.3 percent growth.

North Korea stages military parade, holds back on advanced missiles

Pyongyang : North Korea staged a huge military parade on Sunday to mark its 70th anniversary as a nation but held back its most advanced missiles and devoted nearly half of the parade to civilian efforts to build the domestic economy. The strong emphasis on the economy underscores leader Kim Jong Un’s new strategy of putting economic development front and center. Kim attended the morning parade but did not address the assembled crowd, which included the head of the Chinese parliament and high-level delegations from countries that have friendly ties with the North. Senior statesman Kim Yong Nam, the head of North Korea’s parliament, set the relatively softer tone for the event with an opening speech that emphasized the economic goals of the regime, not its nuclear might. After a truncated parade featuring tanks, fewer than the usual number of missiles and lots of goose-stepping units from all branches of the military, along with some students and others, the focus switched to civilian groups, ranging from nurses to construction workers, many with colorful floats beside them. Although North Korea stages military parades almost every year, and held one just before the Olympics began in South Korea in February this year, Sunday’s parade came at a particularly sensitive time.
