New Delhi : The government is understood to be unhappy with CBI Director Alok Verma meeting former Union minister Arun Shourie and lawyer Prashant Bhushan who demanded a probe into the alleged corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal, with a senior government functionary saying it is “rare” for the agency chief to meet politicians. Last week, Shourie and Bhushan had met the CBI Director, submitted documents and demanded a probe into alleged corruption in the Rafale aircraft deal and offset contract.

Identified as Shoaib Mohammad Lone, he hails from South Kashmir’s Kulgam district. His family members said that despite an appeal from the mother Shoaib has not returned. Shoaib was a B.Sc.(IT) student at Alpine Institute of Management and Technology, a private college in Dehradun, had joined the institute in 2016. J&K police officials said on Tuesday that Shoaib has joined militant ranks. “We received a missing report from the family. Bhubaneshwar : The depression over the Bay of Bengal on Tuesday intensified and moved towards Odisha-Andhra Pradesh coast before taking the shape of a cyclonic storm, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said. The fear of a cyclonic storm thickened as the deep depression remained practically stationary and lay centered at about 560-km southeast of Gopalpur in Odisha and 510-km southeast of Kalingapatanam in Andhra Pradesh, it said. “It is very likely to move west-northwards for some time and then north-westwards and cross Odisha and adjoining north Andhra Pradesh coast between Gopalpur and Kalingapatanam around morning of October 11,” Director of the Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, H R Biswas said.

New Delhi : As the political slugfest over the exodus of migrant workers intensifies in Gujarat, Congress MLA and OBC leader Alpesh Thakor has found himself in the eye of a storm. Thakor — who was part of the troika, along with Patidar leader Hardik Patel and Dalit leader Jignesh Mewani, challenging the Gujarat’s BJP government ahead of the 2017 assembly polls — has got mired in a controversy as most of the 342 people arrested in the 42 cases of attacks on migrants allegedly belong to his outfit, the Kshatriya Thakor Sena (KTS). The attacks started after a migrant from Bihar allegedly raped a 14-month-old toddler in north Gujarat’s Himmatnagar on September 28. Around the same time, the KTS had launched a drive demanding preference for local workers over migrants in the automobile manufacturing hub of Sanand and north Gujarat. Thakor had even announced an Adhikar Yatra on October 8 to press his demands, but cancelled

New Delhi : Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday linked attacks on migrant workers in Gujarat to larger economic issues including rising unemployment, urging the government to act decisively to restore peace and ensure safety. “Poor economic policies, demonetisation and a poorly-implemented GST (Goods and Services Tax) led to closure of factories and rise in unemployment that is being manifested in violent attacks on migrants across Gujarat,” Gandhi wrote in a Facebook post. “Amongst the youth there is growing frustration and anger with the government’s inability to create jobs. This anger and frustration is being manifested in violent attacks on migrants, across the state of Gujarat,” the post read. The rape of a toddler in Sabarkantha district last week, allegedly by a migrant, has triggered attacks on workers from outside the state employed in Gujarat. The attacks have caused some migrant workers to flee the state, triggering concerns that industrial production would be hurt in the run-up to the festive period.

Jaipur : In the biggest recorded outbreak of the zika virus disease in India, 29 cases have been confirmed within 18 days in the Shastri Nagar neighbourhood of Jaipur, the state health department confirmed on Tuesday. This takes the total number of confirmed zika cases in India to 30. The first confirmed case this year was in Tamil Nadu. Among the confirmed cases are those of three pregnant women, but their unborn babies do not have zika, which has been associated severe birth defects, including microcephaly, a defect in which the baby’s head is smaller than average because of abnormal brain development. “The three pregnant women who tested zika virus positive are safe as the risk to the foetus is during the first three months of pregnancy,” said Veenu Gupta, additional chief secretary, state health department. “One of the mothers has delivered her baby, the second will deliver in a day or two, and the third women is five months pregnant,” she said. Zika is spread through the bite of an infected Aedes aegypti mosquito, which also spreads dengue and chikungunya.

The MPC’s decision increases uncertainty

The monetary policy committee (MPC) of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) surprised the market by keeping policy rates unchanged. Most financial market analysts expected the rate-setting committee to raise policy rates by 25 basis points. This newspaper had also argued in favour of a rate hike. However, the committee changed the policy stance from neutral to “calibrated tightening”. This basically means that the possibility of a rate cut in the current cycle is now off the table. The change in the policy stance is in the right direction, but the decision to not raise rates is puzzling. It shows that there is a considerable difference in the way the MPC and financial markets are interpreting the evolving economic situation, which was also reflected in the post-policy press conference. The decision can perhaps be explained by the fact that inflation projections have been revised lower and the MPC believes that the last two hikes are sufficient to keep inflation close to the target. However, many analysts were of the view that rising crude and the falling rupee deserved a rate response. The tightening of global financial conditions and rising interest rates in the US will make financing of the current account deficit (CAD) difficult. This will put downward pressure on the rupee and raise inflation risks. Though the government is said to be working on ways to reduce the CAD, the steps taken thus far are unlikely to have a meaningful impact. Furthermore, comments in the press conference suggested that the MPC is not particularly worried about the fall in the rupee. It was reiterated that the RBI’s policy is to manage undue volatility in currency and not target any level. This is well accepted and the market was not expecting the central bank to start targeting a particular level in the currency market. However, in the present situation when volatility is likely to remain elevated, policy tightening would have helped. It would have sent a signal to the market that the central bank is willing to compress aggregate demand to deal with CAD and inflationary risks emanating from the weakening of the currency. This would have reduced the need to use foreign exchange reserves to contain volatility. The move would have also been consistent with the legislated mandate of inflation-targeting and the wider objective of protecting financial stability. However, by not raising rates, the MPC has left the currency market to do the macro adjustment. This could be risky. It is likely that the pressure on the rupee will increase. Though there is a case for gradual depreciation, the risk now is that the currency might overshoot significantly on the downside and affect economic activity, along with raising inflationary expectations and financial stability risks.

Jeremy Lalrinnunga wins India’s maiden gold medal at Youth Olympic Games

New Delhi : India had already eclipsed its best-ever tally at a Youth Olympic Games on Day 2 of the extravaganza and by the end of it, had further return to rejoice. Having won three silver medals, India won their first gold medal at the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, Argentina with Jeremy Lalrinnunga lifting 150kg on his last attempt for a combined 274kg. This is India’s first-ever gold medal at the Youth Olympics. In the two editions prior to this, India’s best performance was two medals in the 2014 Youth Olympics at Nanjing, China. In Ahmedabad, migrant workers find shelter in ‘secret’ camp Ahmedabad : Not far from a gateway marking the entrance to this village in Ahmedabad district, a stronghold of the Thakor community, a group of 25 young migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh have found refuge in a farm house since Sunday evening. On the gateway, which is an arch made of stone, a banner has been put up by the Kshatriya Thakor Samaj demanding capital punishment for the migrant worker from Bihar accused of allegedly raping a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha on September 28. But the two-storey farm house — surrounded by fields, enclosed by boundary walls and secured by an iron gate — is not easily visible from the main road. This is one of the “secret” camps set up in the district by Uttar Bhartiya Vikas Parishad, a social welfare trust, to shelter migrant workers from UP, MP and Bihar, following the widespread attacks against them in Gujarat since the alleged rape. “Temporary arrangements have been made for their stay till the situation is under control. We don’t want to disclose

these locations. A careful recce was conducted before shortlisting these areas,” says Shyam Singh Thakur, who heads the Parishad. By Monday, the men from UP, in the age group of 18-28, had settled down on the terrace of the farm house. “This is the safest place for them. This village is part of the Vatva assembly constituency of Gujarat’s MoS for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja, so there will be no breach in law and order. Also, the public here is educated and there have been regular meetings between residents, police and our organisation members,” says Deepak Dubey, a Parishad member. Formed in 2016, the Parishad is based in Ahmedabad, and run by trustees from UP, Bihar.

Vadodara : American fast food giant Domino’s Pizza has gone vegetarian in Gujarat, terming it a market of consumers who prefer eating from outlets that do not serve meat. The decision came into force from October 2. The pizza chain, which has been dishing out pure vegetarian pizzas during Navratris in several of its outlets across the county and particularly Gujarat since 2015, has already begun conveying its decision to the consumers trying to place orders for non-vegetarian pizzas. In several cities across Gujarat, the sudden decision of the outlet to go vegetarian has left the customers disappointed, with most of them venting out on social media platforms. The company executives, however, are forthcoming about the decision. When The Indian Express tried to place an order for a non-veg pizza in Vadodara over phone, the executive attending the call said, “We would like to inform you that we have discontinued the non-vegetarian pizzas as we have realised that Gujarat is a market where the customers prefer vegetarian food. We would like to keep in line with their sentiments.” The outlets in Vadodara, like outlets in other cities of the state, have put up green dots on doors and boards indicating that they serve only ‘lacto-vegetarian’ food as required by the Food Safety and Standards (Packaging and Labelling) Act. The staff at the outlets, however, refused to identify themselves as they speak of the change. I stand totally against it.” In a series of tweets, Rupani accused the Congress of inciting the violence. “Congress first incites violence against migrants. Congress president tweets to condemn this violence. Does the Congress president not have any shame? If the Congress president is against the violence in Gujarat, he needs to take action against its own members who incited violence against the migrants in Gujarat… We are working hard to ensure trust & confidence among all citizens that they are safe &

secure in Gujarat, instead of indulging in blame game….” Senior Congress leader Ahmed Patel defended Thakor after members of an outfit he leads were arrested in connection with the attacks, and alleged that the BJP government was trying to politicise the issue. Gujarat MoS for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja had said efforts were under way to find out whether “it is a conspiracy by those who are out of power in Gujarat since the last 22 years”. Speaking to the media in Bharuch, Patel, a Rajya Sabha MP from Gujarat, said that Jadeja was trying to politicise

the issue. Meanwhile, in Nagpur on Sunday, Congress’s Mumbai president Sanjay Nirupam said the entire north Indian community was under attack and being forced to flee. “It (Gujarat) is the home state of the Prime Minister… It should be remembered the Prime Minister has to contest polls (again) from Varanasi,” he said. “If the community decides to not work for a single day, life in the city (Mumbai) will come to a standstill. Manila : Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte does not have cancer, the acting interior minister said on Tuesday, after the firebrand leader underwent tests in a private hospital. The public has been clamouring for information about Duterte’s health after the 73-year-old missed two official events last week. “He disclosed to us that the result of the test was negative, the one where they took samples from his intestines,” Eduardo Ano told reporters in an event posted on Facebook live by domestic news agencies. Ano said Duterte made the disclosure during a cabinet meeting on Monday night. The president made an unscheduled visit to a hospital when doctors asked him to repeat digestive tract procedures three weeks after similar tests. Duterte’s condition “is not serious” and will remain a confidential matter, his spokesman, Harry Roque, told a separate news briefing, declining either to confirm or deny the prior remarks of the acting interior minister. “The president will abide by the constitution, but because it is not serious, he will treat his medical condition as confidential,” he said. Roque declined to give details of the test results and Duterte’s health.
