Gujarat elections

Rahul Gandhi: Did PM Modi visit houses of Dalits, Patidars when their youths were attacked?

Congress has divided the country with its lies, says PM Narendra Modi

New Delhi : As the first phase of voting commenced in Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi Saturday accused the Congress of spreading lies and resorting to abuse in a bid to garner votes. Addressing a rally in Lunawada in Mahisagar district, Modi said the party has for years “divided the country” and “made brothers fight among each other.” “All these years, one family has divided the country, made

brothers fight with each other. The party has resorted to abusing me, They do not know that by abusing me they are hurting the Gujarati public,” Modi said, adding that the Congress has not understood the mindset of the people in the state. Further, the prime minister targeted the Congress for its lack of decorum. Congress youth leader Salman Nizami, in his recent tweets, questioned PM Modi’s parentage.

Congress has made it a practice to say EVM malfunctioned every time when they face defeat. Therefore, they are preparing ground before December 18 to blame their defeat on EVM, said Jitendra Singh.

Over 64% voting in first phase

New Delhi : In the first phase of the high-stakes assembly elections in Gujarat on Saturday, the Congress and BJP are locked in a head-to-head contest in the voting for the 89 seats of the total 182 in the state. The voting for the 89 seats of Saurashtra and south Gujarat will be held on Saturday, while that for 93 seats of north and central Gujarat, including Chhota Udepur, will he held on December 14. Around 2.12 crore voters would be exercising their franchise in Modi’s home state to choose between the ruling BJP and the Congress.

New Delhi : Hitting back at Narendra Modi for saying that Congress leaders deserted the people of Gujarat during the floods, Rahul Gandhi on Saturday asked if the Prime Minister visited the houses of Dalits when members of the community were beaten up. “Did Modi visit the houses of Dalits when their youths were beaten up?” Gandhi said at a rally at Harij in Patan district. The remarks seemed to be a reference to last year’s incident in Una, where four Dalit youths were flogged by ‘cow vigilantes’ in public, allegedly for cow slaughter. The video of their brutal thrashing had gone viral and led to widespread protests across the state. Harij has a sizeable Patidar population and Gandhi did not lose an opportunity to woo the community, which has been up in arms against the government over reservation in OBC quota.

Congress alleges EVM malfunctioning in several booths

Gujarat witnessed an average voter turnout of 30.31 per cent, with the highest percentage being recorded in the districts of Tapi, Morbi and Navsari.Even as voting progressed in parts of Gujarat, malfunctioning of EVMs was reported from some areas in Surat, like Varachha and Surat west, which were later replaced. The Election Commission officials did not confirm any glitches in the machines, all of which are VVPAT enabled. The Congress, however, questioned the functioning of EVMs. Political secretary to Congress president Sonia Gandhi, Ahmed Patel tweeted after voting, “EVM malfunctioning in several polling stations. Request the Election Commission to take necessary action immediately.”

Kerala govt asks Indian Navy, Coast Surgical strikes inside PoK were ‘just Guard, Air Force another operation’: Special paratrooper to continue search for fishermen The captain-rank officer of the 4th unit of the special forces said the strikes were ‘designed and planned’ to send a ‘message’ to Pakistan.

Chandigarh: A paratrooper, who was involved in the Indian Army’s surgical strikes inside Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in 2016, on Friday described the daring action as “just another operation” for the special forces albeit on a larger scale. The captain-rank officer of the 4th unit of the special forces said the strikes were “designed and planned” to send a “message” to Pakistan, which he thinks the Indian forces did in the “best way” it could. India had carried out surgical

strikes at seven terror launch pads across the LoC on the intervening night of September

28 and 29, 2016 with the Army inflicting significant casualties on terrorists who were

preparing to infiltrate from the PoK. The strikes had come within two weeks of a terrorist attack on an Army camp in Uri, Jammu and Kashmir which claimed the lives of 19 jawans. Sharing his experience during the country’s first ‘military literature’ festival at Chandigarh, the officer said his unit had just 10 days to plan and prepare for the operation. “This was a large-scale operation. Once we were given a go ahead, we went ahead with normal preparedness.

Need institutional arbitration system to get investment New Delhi : If India wants to attract investments, it needs to develop a good institutional arbitration system with minimum interference of courts and maximum execution of arbitration awards, the Chief Justice of India, Dipak Misra, on Saurday said. Justice Misra stressed that the country needs to adjust without surrendering “our conceptual sovereignty”. The shift has to be towards institutional arbitration while also keeping in mind the interests of the country. He was speaking at

‘International Conference on Arbitration in the Era of Globalisation’ here. “There is

a need and there is a purpose. When you are handling a complex economy, there has

to be structural adjudication of disputes,” he said. He added that “apart from the legal issue, it is an issue of getting the investment” and that “India has to inculcate faith in the global investors that it has a very good institutional arbitrator system”. “It is not the human nature alone but the commercial perceptions, the clauses in the contract and swings in the business sometimes attract arbitrations,” he said, adding that alternative dispute resolution system has gained priority and arbitration is one of them.

Thiruvananthapuram : The Kerala government today requested the Navy, Coast Guard (CG) and Indian Air Force (IAF) to continue the search operations for the missing fishermen in the aftermath of Cyclone Okchi, for another 10 days. State Chief Secretary K M Abraham today sent an urgent letter in this regard to Rear Admiral R Nadkarni, Chief of Staff, Southern Naval Command, Air Marshal Rakesh Kumar Singh Bhadauria, AOC Southern Air command and Additional Director General K Natarajan, Coast Guard Commander (Western Seaboard), Mumbai, an official press release said.Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, who is in Delhi, will be meeting Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and discuss the matter with her this evening. He will also be meeting Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh with regard to the state’s plea for a special central package to rehabilitate families affected by Ockhi cyclone.

Fourth Rajasthan lynching demonstrates indoctrination of hate The 25th anniversary of the demolition of Babri Masjid last week was hyped by Hindutva forces, with the demand for a temple in Ayodhya, far too many hate messages on WhatsApp about ‘love jehad’, while sabhas in city after city made hate speeches. And then the ghastly incident, on December 6th in Rajnagar, the headquarter town of Rajsamand district in Rajasthan, brought back those horrible memories of the riots in the wake of the Babri Masjid demolition, the Gujarat riots of 2002 and the recent lynchings of innocent Muslims across the country. Videos of the gruesome act of murder by Shambhu Lal Regar of Mohammed Afrazul, a migrant labourer from Malda, West Bengal, went viral on social media. Very similar to the videos of the killings in Jharkhand of Muslims in February, when the lynching was broadcast on social media, only to be received by the son when it was still happening, who despite informing the police could not save his father. Like the lynching of Pehlu Khan and others, in which many of the participants and bystanders made videos, as if glorying in the gore they had witnessed, first-hand. A father of three children and a small time marble dealer of Rajsamand who lost his business due to demonetisation, Shambhu Lal has emerged as the archetype of what the indoctrination of hate can do to people. It is important to know that Shambhu Lal has spent a substantial amount of time in Anand, Gujarat, and his parents still have a small business in Gujarat. The attendant hardship after demonetisation has forced them to make idols for a living. It was to inflict the worst kind of pain that Shambhu Lal brought the sharp iron hack, the spade, the bottle of petrol on his Activa scooter. He was so determined to carry out the killing that not a minute was lost after he alighted from his scooter and saw Afrazul. Shambhu struck the first blow on Afrazul’s back. The blows continued for over two and a half minutes. The cries of a writhing Afrazul, begging to be saved from the torture, didn’t touch him. The incident took place barely one away from the District Collector’s office. The murder was shot on a mobile camera by Shambhu Lal’s minor nephew. In the footage, an exhausted Shambhu Lal is heard warning “jehadis” that if they want to live in “our” country then they should stop “love jehad”, otherwise their fate would be the same. The rant continues and after first hitting an already dying Afrazul with the hack, he pours a bottle of petrol over him and then burns him alive. The indoctrination of hate is complete. In another other video shot in a temple before he surrendered to authorities the next morning, Shambhu Lal tries to give reasons as to why he killed the man. It is the identity of Mewar that he invokes.

Word about David Dhawan working on a remake of the yesteryear hit Chaalbaaz has only just started to gain prominence. And now, to add to it, the latest buzz is that Alia Bhatt will be in running to reprise Sridevi’s dual roles of a shy, quiet girl and her brash sister. After the success of Judwaa 2, which was a sequel to his own Judwaa, David seems to be betting heavy on remakes. So, suggest sources, not only is the filmmaker quietly penning and readying the remake of Chaalbaaz, he’s sure Alia is the modern day Sridevi, and will be able to do justice to the role. In fact, Alia, speaking to the media recently, said, “When I had gone to him, asking to be cast in the next instalment of Judwaa, David sir told me ‘I have a better role for you in comparison to Judwaa 3’. The next time I told him about my wish again, he said ‘Not in Judwaa 3, you have to work with me in the Chaalbaaz remake’.”Coincidentally, when she had been asked, Sridevi had said that not only would Chaalbaaz be her one movie that deserves to be remade is Chaalbaaz. “And if it’s remade, the one actress who could fit in that double role of mine is Alia,” she had smiled.

Sri Lanka can beat India in the absence of Virat Kohli: Thisara

A real test awaits Virat Kohli’s India in South Africa: Graeme Smith

Johannesburg: India have performed exceptionally well in the home Test series against Sri Lanka, but former South African skipper Graeme Smith believes that a real challenge awaits the number one Test side when they face the Proteas away from home. India’s 1-0 win in the three-match series against the Lankan Lions saw them level Australia and West Indies’ record of nine consecutive Test series wins.“The pace and skills of our bowlers here will be the real test for them. It will be really interesting,” Sport24 quoted Smith as saying. The former opening batsman’s remarks hold significance as India have a poor winning record abroad. They are yet to win a Test series in Australia and South Africa. Smith

said, “India’s own pace attack will also have to do well in order for them to have success here.”However, former India batsman Rahul Dravid has backed the Virat Kohli-led side for the South Africa tour and showed full confidence in the

team about putting a great show in foreign conditions as well. Dravid believes the Indian side is ready as much as possible. “I am looking forward to the next couple of months in cricket and watching the Indian team playing in South Africa and I

believe that they are going to do well,” the India U-19 and ‘A’ team coach had said earlier. India will face South Africa in three Test series beginning from January 13. The series will be followed by six ODIs and two three T20Is.

Dharamsala: All-rounder Angelo Mathews brings in a lot of balance to the side with his bowling and Sri Lanka skipper Thisara Perera hopes that he does something special for the team on Sunday in the first ODI against India here. “He is bowling in this series. He didn’t bowl in the Tests. He is prepared for ODIs and T20s. That gives us an option to balance the side. Hopefully he can do something special for us,” said Perera on the eve of the opening One dayer of the three-match series. India will be without the services of regular skipper Virat Kohli in the limited overs series after he opted for rest, but Perera feels that his team would still has to put its best foot forward against the hosts. “India don’t have Virat

Kohli. He is their best batsman. But we actually don’t think on those lines. We have to do our best. We will assess the wicket and if we play our best cricket, we can beat them,” he said. Talking about the preparation of the team, Perera said: “We have prepared well. We had two good sessions over the last two days. We have a nice balance in the side. Hopefully we can do something special. Mentally and fitness wise we have done well.” Asked about the players who are making a comeback to the team after recovering from injuries, Perera said: “We have a couple of players who have come from injury. It is a balanced side at the moment. We can assess what we want to do. I think (Asele) Gunaratne is back after injury

and he is definitely playing. Hopefully we can do something special.” Perera did not agree that his team lacked power-hitters. “We have power hitters. When you look at Dick (Niroshan Dickwella), Danushka (Gunathilaka), Upul (Tharanga) and Angelo (Mathews) all are power hitters. We can beat any team.” Meanwhile, Sri Lankan team manager Asanka Gurusinha informed that batsman Dhananjaya de Silva, who played with a glute muscle condition during his matchsaving century against India in the third and final Test in Delhi, will not play in the opening game on Sunday. “He (Dhananjaya) has been ruled out. He is pretty close, but didn’t want to take the risk,” Gurusinha said.

Ravi Shastri expects Team India to export home dominance overseas New Delhi: India will approach 2018 as the year to shed their “poor travellers” tag, head coach Ravi Shastri said ahead of the team’s tour of South Africa. India top the test rankings having sealed their recordequalling ninth consecutive series on Wednesday, six of which came at home and only one -- against West Indies in the Caribbean -- outside Asia. Sterner

tests await Virat Kohli’s men next year when they also travel to England and Australia, where conditions will not be as conducive to their spinners as it is at home, and the moving ball will probe their batting technique. “This team is looking good and they have their priorities in place. They’re hungry to prove themselves home and away,” Shastri told the

4 / Dt. 10-12-2017, sunday, Ahmedabad Akhilesh Yadav also took a swipe at the BJP and said that the “BJP’s model of development” was “deceptive”.

Gujarat polls: Replace EVMs with ballot papers, demands Akhilesh Yadav

Ahmedabad : Samajwadi Party leader Akhilesh Yadav Friday demanded that Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) be replaced with ballot papers in elections. Speaking to mediapersons here, he claimed that circumstantial evidence had proven that EVMs could be tampered with and the elections could be rigged. “There is a need to replace EVMs with ballot papers,” the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said. He referred to the recently concluded local body elections in UP and asserted that the BJP had won in areas where EVMs were used and lost badly wherever ballot papers were used. According to Yadav, at many places like Kanpur, it was found that whichever button the voters pressed on the EVMs, the vote went to the BJP. At some places, the Independents got zero votes meaning that even the votes of the candidates and their families went to the BJP. He added that even the Election Commission had accepted that EVMs could be defective. Yadav said to ensure transparent and fair polls, ballot papers should be used.

Gujarat elections 2017:

Half of state decides today as Saurashtra, South Gujarat votes in phase one

Ahmedabad : As half of Gujarat prepared to vote Saturday in the first phase of the high-stakes assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, moving swiftly to spearhead the BJP campaign in the remaining half of the state that votes December 14, reeled out a list of invectives which he said had been hurled at him at different times by leaders of the rival Congress. Effectively putting himself at the centre of the battle for the ruling party’s citadel, Modi told voters Friday that the attacks on him were personal. He claimed that Congress veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar, who had called him a “neech kisam ka aadmi” a day earlier, had put out a “supari” in Pakistan for his “removal”, while Sonia Gandhi had called him “maut ka saudagar” who practised “zer ni kheti” (poison farming), and Rahul Gandhi had accused him of “dalali” of soldiers’ blood. Rashid Alvi, he said, called him a “stupid PM” and Digvijaya Singh had described his rule as “rakshash raj”.

This test is the fifth in line, after the first four tests conducted last year as part of Phase 1, revealed immediate issues and concerns that needed attention in order to improve fire safety of building envelopes. The test involved setting a threestorey building on fire to study the impact of dangers posed by modern construction methods and materials, thereby defining the need to modernise fire engineering. The building comprised of an insulating material along with an ACP-glass facade and was conducted in the presence of several stakeholders, including fire experts from India and the US, researchers, practicing engineers, policymakers, contractors and manufacturers. UL and IIT Gandhinagar had joined hands last year, with the understanding that fire safety as part of disaster management is the topmost priority, given the increasing use of facades of different

Rajkot : Alleging that the Congress manifesto was not in consonance with the discussion it had with Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), Dinesh Bambhaniya, a close aide of Hardik Patel, on Friday urged the quota leaders to stop supporting the party unless it clarifies its stand. The statement by Bambhaniya comes just a day ahead of the first phase of Assembly polls. He, however, clarified that he will vote for the Congress. At a press meet in Gandhinagar, he said he was neither quitting the PAAS nor supporting the BJP, but raised questions on the videos purportedly showing Patel in company of women. On the Congress manifesto he said, “It was agreed

Vadodara : Normally, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) shouldn’t have any worries about the election results in Gujarat. It is Narendra Modi’s home state and the party has been in power there for more than two decades. Prima facie, it should be cakewalk for the BJP, not least because its principle opponent, the Congress, has been down in the dumps all these years. Nor is there any sign of a revival of its moribund organisation. Yet, the BJP doesn’t seem to be at ease. For one, its star -- and, indeed, only effective -- campaigner, the Prime Minister, has virtually parked himself in Gujarat, addressing a large number of meetings all over the state. As is obvious, it is unusual for a Prime Minister to spend so much time in a single state before an election, especially when the opponent is supposed to be weak. If he has nevertheless done so, it means that he is uncertain about the outcome.

that the only way to give Patidars reservation, was to increase the 27 per cent quota given to OBCs. But the manifesto speaks only about Economically Backward Classes, which the state government has already declared last year. Secondly, the manifesto does not promise to set up special investigation teams for probing the violence of August 25, 2015, and killing of 14

Patidar youths. Thirdly, it was agreed that Rs 2,000 crore provision will be made for skill development under Savarna Ayog (upper caste commission), but the manifesto says the corpus will be to advance loans.” “After they released the manifesto on December 4, I tried to contact state Congress president Bharatsinh Solanki, but he was not available.

Japan plans long-range missiles to counter North Korea Tokyo: Japan plans to purchase offensive air-to-surface missiles to counter North Korea’s rising military threat, its defence minister said on Friday a move likely to stir debate over its decades-long pacifist policy. Itsunori Onodera said the ministry intends to request a special budget for the fiscal year starting April 2018 to purchase long-range cruise missiles deployed on fighter jets. According to local media, the ministry plans to buy JASSM and LRASM long-range, air-to-ground missiles with a range of some 900 km from US firms. It also plans to buy Joint Strike Missiles with a range of some 500 km from Norway’s Kongsberg Defence and Aerospace, news reports said. The move will likely draw controversy as Tokyo has long maintained an exclusively defence-oriented policy under its pacifist constitution, which

bans the use of force as a means of settling international disputes. But Mr Onodera insisted his ministry will continue to uphold the policy, telling reporters: “We will introduce them as standoff missiles that allow us to deal with our opponents from outside the range of threats.” Japan’s military policy has been restricted to self- defence and relies heavily on the

US to attack enemy territory under the Japan-US security alliance. US President Donald Trump had caused consternation during his White House campaign by suggesting allies such as Japan need to do more to defend themselves, although since taking office Mr Trump and his diplomats have offered reassurances of support.

types (glass, aluminium, composite, etc.) in building construction. A spate of accidents in India and elsewhere underlined the need for rigorous standards and codes in this area. Suresh Sugavanam, UL’s Managing Director of South Asia said, “Over the last one year, our association with the Indian Institute of Technology, Gandhinagar and the commitment to study fire safety has opened the doors to several interesting and important findings. This partnership is helping us realise our safety mission while working towards developing Indiaspecific fire safety standards. We are extremely pleased to release the research findings of the Phase I project, titled “A first of its kind report on

glass façade testing project: Research on glass façade fire testing”. This Live Fire Test as part of the second phase will further help us in gaining insights in order to recommend relevant standards and solutions.” Prof Sudhir K Jain, Director, IITGN shared his insights on the fire tests and said, “The installation of glass, aluminium or composite facades was found to be the culprit of few major building fire accidents in the recent years in India and abroad. It is expected that such tests will provide scientific insights into the interaction between insulating materials, facade materials and building compartments in realistic fire scenarios and help improve their safety.”

Shailesh Mehta Sotta sticks to ‘daadhi topi’ line: Must oppress, threaten ‘anti-social elements’

Vadodara : Served a notice by the returning officer (RO) for his ostensibly inflammatory comments against the minority community at a campaign rally two days ago, Shailesh Mehta Sotta, the BJP candidate from Dabhoi, on Friday stuck to his stance over a video that shows him seeking to “reduce the numbers” of those in “dadhi (and) topi”, a patois for Muslim men. With Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and one of the party’s star campaigners, Yogi Adityanath, on the dais at a public meeting in Dabhoi, Sotta on Friday used the words “anti-social elements” to ostensibly refer to one community — such elements, he said, “must be

oppressed and threatened”. Without naming the minority community, Sotta said, “For the last two days all national and international news channels have highlighted my comments on anti-social elements. They thought Shailesh Sotta will get scared of the limelight. But I maintain my stand: these anti-social

elements must be oppressed and threatened. “Those who do business with honesty and live respectfully are not a problem, but those who want to carry out trade and business by the use of force and fear must feel threatened. No one will trouble them if they stop anti-social elements present within them.
