There is need to reclaim Hinduism for its vision as faith: Shashi Tharoor

London : There is a need to reclaim Hinduism for its vision as a faith and social practice as it is often “distorted” for political means, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has said. Participating in a conversation with author Namita Gokhale at the opening session of

the ZEE Jaipur Literary festival here, Tharoor said that caste is not intrinsic to Hinduism as a religion but is abominable and discriminating against people. Tharoor discussed the difference between the “vision” of Hinduism and the “social practice” of

RSS may project Pranab Mukherjee as PM nominee, believes Shiv Sena; Sharmistha says father not rejoining politics

Mumbai: Days after former President Pranab Mukherjee made his maiden address at the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut on Sunday said the organisation may project Mukherjee as a prime ministerial candidate in case the BJP falls short of a majority in the Lok Sabha elections next year. However, Raut’s speculation was immediately countered by the Congress veteran’s daughter, Sharmistha Mukherjee, who clarified that her father will not rejoin politics. While claiming that the motive behind the RSS inviting the former president would be clear only after next year’s general elections, Raut said, “The scenario prevalent in the country is such that the BJP will not win a majority in 2019. If there is a fractured mandate and other parties do not support Modi, Mukherjee will be projected as a prime ministerial candidate who will be acceptable to all.”

She will only entertain top-notch producers and directors and only if they come to her with the author-backed title role.

Priyanka brings shame to Indians Priyanka has been heavily trolled on the social media for her latest faux pas

The mischief in the The Blood of Romeo, part of American serial Quantico, starring Priyanka Chopra, is too obvious to be missed. The plot’s allusion to the complex India-Pakistan equations can by no means be considered innocent coincidences. The episode, aired on June 1, shows Indians as terrorists plotting to mount an attack on Manhattan and, to add insult to injury, Priyanka is cast as the terror buster: an Indian fighting fellow Indian terrorists, one of whom is even shown wearing a Rudraksh chain, dramatically bringing in a Hindu motif as well. A blame game, making fingers point at Pakistan, completes the plot, seeking to lend credibility to the typical Pakistan refrain that terror acts are often engineered by India, only to pass on the responsibility to Islamabad. The producers of the show have come to the rescue of the Indian actor, saying she was not to be blamed as she did not have any creative control over it. The ABC network, which airs the show, also apologised for stepping into a ‘complex political issue’ by showing ‘Indian nationalists’ planning to carry out a terrorist attack in a foreign land and frame Pakistan for it days before a summit on Kashmir. The actor too claimed that she was a proud Indian and felt saddened by the sense of hurt caused to her countrymen. Granted that Priyanka Chopra is not the creator of the episode, or the writer of the script; but she cannot escape blame for being totally insensitive to the sensibilities of fellow Indians, by accepting a role which makes her instrumental in portraying Indians as terrorists. Her crime busting act is a bigger crime because what her role portrays is not only a travesty of truth, but it also seeks to promote the line of argument often advanced by Pakistani general s and officials in the aftermath of terrorist actions that occur with monotonous regularity. This should put a question mark on her much touted intellectual calibre, which, among other things, is supposed to have won her the Miss World title. She can claim credit for being the first Indian actor to headline a US network series, but her indiscretion brings her much bigger discredit, if at all she cares. She must realise, or rather be made to do so, that there are more valuable things than money and fame can bring. Priyanka has been heavily trolled on the social media for her latest faux pas. She has attracted widespread criticism for some of her recent omissions and commissions. For instance, she was accused of disrespecting Indian sensibilities by appearing inappropriately dressed at a meeting with PM Modi in Berlin last year. Recently, she faced flak for visiting Rohingyas during a trip to Bangladesh, but by selectively ignoring persecuted Hindus.

Alia Bhatt dines with Ranbir Kapoor’s family, walks out with his niece Samaira Ranbir Kapoor recently admitted that he is dating his ‘Brahmastra’ co-star Alia Bhatt. Deepika Padukone becomes demanding

After the spectacular success of the Sanjay Leela Bhansali directed Padmaavat, leading lady Deepika Padukone seems to have received a huge ego boost. Rumour has it that the actress now entertains only author-backed roles and

demands a remuneration that exceeds what the leading man receives and is apparently, three times more than what A-list heroines make. “Sari Bhansali ki galti hai (It’s all Bhansali’s fault),” says a young director.

“After Padmaavat, Deepika thinks she is far above the rat race. She will only entertain topnotch producers and directors and only if they come to her with the author-backed title role. She also wants creative control over the script,” adds the director The end result might not be palatable for the actress for she runs the risk of out-pricing herself from the movie market. The repercussions can already be felt, for her marketing team is having to create false stories about her roles (Deepika doing a desi super-hero film is one such flight of fantasy). We hope the young actress realises that talent speaks louder than digits on a cheque, and Deepika surely isn’t lacking in the talent department.

Taapsee Pannu makes short film debut with Nitishastra, reveals what made her sign it Actress Taapsee Pannu immediately said yes to Nitishastra when she heard the theme of the short film. Taapsee has always been praised for the roles she has chosen, especially after PINK. Her role in the Shoojit Sircar film, which focussed on sexual harassment and victim blaming, brought her widespread acclaim. The actress will now make her short film debut in Nitishastra, which has been directed by Kapil Verma. The film sheds light on the evils of sexual harassment and rape. Taapsee will share screen space with Vicky Arora and the film is part of a category called Large Short Films. Many awardwinning shorts have been part of this category. When quizzed about her decision to do the

film, Taapsee says, “I wasn’t really sure if and when I would do a short film, but when Kapil narrated the idea, I just had one thing in my mind, that it’s only me who should do it and I instantly grabbed the opportunity.” When the director narrated the script to her, the actress knew that she had to be part of the film. Not only because of how relevant the topic is in today’s times, but also because the action sequences and twists in the story sounded challenging. “The idea of the short film revolves around two very important films of my career, PINK and Naam Shabana. So, I was instantly driven to do it. Kapil asked for three days to shoot and two days to train for the fight, which I was more than happy to give,” says Taapsee.

Women’s Asia Cup: Bangladesh pull off thrilling last-ball finish to register historic win over India

www.sunvillasamachar.com

Glenn Maxwell’s form a worry, admits Justin Langer Already No. 1, French Open SPORTS ROUNDUP

champ Simona Halep knew she needed Grand Slam win

New Delhi: Bangladesh women created history by beating six-time Asia Cup champions India in the final played at Kinrara Academy Oval in Kuala Lumpur. The 3-wicket win came after a hard-fought campaign that saw the side, led by Salma Khatun, defeat India twice in the tournament. The final went right down to the final ball, with Bangladesh needing 2 runs to win in the 113-run chase. A poor effort in the field saw India failing to halt the players from running the second run and saw

them missing out on their chance to win a staggering seventh consecutive Asia Cup. Bangladesh’s Rumana Ahmed, who impressed with her allround performance, was declared the Player of the Match. After Bangladesh won the toss and elected to field first, Ahmed picked up 2 wickets of and gave just 22 runs in her 4 overs to cramp India for runs. India kept losing wickets at regular intervals, but with a captain’s knock by Harmanpreet Kaur, managed to reach a decent total of 112/3 in 20 overs.

Paris : It was the end of a long and rewarding day, one she’ll likely never forget, and new French Open champion Simona Halep harbored a couple of overriding concerns. “I’m tired,” she said. “I’m hungry. I didn’t eat since 9 a.m.” It was getting close to 12 hours since that last meal, and Halep was speaking to two reporters in what she hoped was her last media session Saturday night after beating Sloane Stephens 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 for her first Grand Slam title. Halep had pined for such a championship to go along with her No. 1 ranking, and she finally had come through after

starting her career 0-3 in major finals. “I think it was the most important thing, because always I said that if you are No. 1 without a Grand Slam, you are not a real No. 1,” Halep said. “Now that I was able to win, it makes it special, and makes it, like, everything together. It’s real now.” Sure is. “She showed a lot of maturity. She’s grown up a lot in the last 12 months. Sometimes the losses do make you mature really quickly. You can go one way with your career, and go downwards, or you can suck it up, work a little bit harder and try to do it again,” said Halep’s coach, Darren Cahill.

New Delhi: Newly appointed Australia coach Justin Langer has admitted that the inconsistent form of all-rounder Glenn Maxwell is a big concern ahead of the ODI series against England which begins on Thursday. Maxwell’s poor form continued in Australia’s warmup match where he could only rack up three runs. Prior to Australia’s tour of England, Maxwell was equally woeful in the IPL where he averaged a shade above 14 despite playing 12 matches. Reflecting on the matter, Langer said, “He is [a worry] but that said I have been super impressed with Glenn Maxwell, his preparation has been literally outstanding. I would be very surprised if he doesn’t get a very big score very soon.” “There’s been a lot of talk about Glenn Maxwell but I have been incredibly impressed with the way he

goes about his business and even the way he has been batting in the nets. He played at Whitgift School a week ago [an inter-squad match] and he was the man of the match that day. I am sure

a big one is not far away from him.” However, the inclusion of former skipper Ricky Ponting in the set up has given Langer some hope as he believes Ponting’s influence can turnaround Maxwell’s fortunes. “To have the influence of someone like Punter is gold…so if he keeps preparing well and keeps trusting his preparation it is not far until he becomes an absolute star, I think. He’s got so much talent.

Calum MacLeod hammers fastest ODI hundred for Scotland, shatters records New Delhi: Scotland’s Calum MacLeod created history after becoming the first batsman to score a hundred against England at the Grange Cricket Club, Edinburgh on Sunday. Macleod’s 100 which came off just 70 balls was also the fastest ODI hundred by a Scottish batsman. The 29-year-old right-handed batsman remained unbeaten on 140 as Scotland posted a mammoth 371/5 in 50 overs in the only ODI between the two sides. Incidentally, Scotland went past the 350-run mark for the first time ever in oneday internationals. MacLeod’s seventh ODI hundred was a blistering knock which featured an astounding 16 fours and three huge sixes.

After reaching his fifty at less than a run-aball, MacLeod reached the three-figure mark in the 44th over when he ran a quick two off Adil Rashid. MacLeod was ably supported by middle-order batsman George Munsey who also brought up his maiden ODI half-century scoring 55 runs off 51 balls. Together the duo forged a hundred run stand for the fifth wicket which put Scotland in the driver’s seat. Earlier, Skipper Kyle Coetzer, who opened the innings, also hit a brisk 58 off 49 to set up the platform for Scotland’s total. Meanwhile, if England, who are without the services of Ben Stokes and

Jos Butler can chase down this total then it will be joint second-highest successful ODI chase of all time. Scotland: Kyle Coetzer (capt), Richie Berrington, Dylan Budge, Matthew Cross (wk), Alasdair Evans, Michael Jones, Michael Leask, Calum MacLeod, Preston Mommsen, George Munsey, Safyaan Sharif, Chris Sole, Stuart Whittingham, Mark Watt, Brad Wheal. England: Eoin Morgan (capt), Moeen Ali, Jonny Bairstow (wk), Sam Billings, Alex Hales, Liam Plunkett, Adil Rashid, Joe Root, Jason Roy, Ben Stokes, David Willey, Chris Woakes, Mark Wood.

Indian agencies may seek foreign help in ICICI bank fraud case

The bank, with its focus on recovery of dues from defaulters, has managed to surpass the total amount recovered in the last fiscal.

PNB expects Rs 8,000 crore recovery from NPAs this month

New Delhi: Enthused by the successful resolution of Bhushan Steel, Nirav Modi fraud-hit Punjab National Bank (PNB) is hopeful of Rs 8,000 crore recovery from bad loans in the first quarter of the current fiscal. The bank, with its focus on recovery of dues from defaulters, has managed to surpass the total amount recovered in the last fiscal in the first two months of this financial year, a senior PNB

official told news agancy. “This is due to renewed focus on recovery by PSB banks including referral of many cases to NCLT under the bankruptcy code is forcing many of the defaulting companies to settle their NPAs. While PNB had recovered Rs 5617.55 crore in the whole of last year, the bank’s recovery stands at Rs 6,000 crore by first week of June,” the official said. By the time, this quarter (April-

June) ends, PNB expects to complete recovery of almost Rs 8,000 crore, the official said, adding that large corporates like Religare, Arcotech and Surya Alloys have recently settled bad loans worth Rs 350 crore in the last two months via the recovery camps setup by PNB. It is to be noted that PNB posted loss of Rs 13,416.91 crore for the fourth quarter ended March, 2018, the biggest ever by any domestic

lender. The bank last month said it provided for Rs 7,178 crore, 50 per cent of the total amount of Rs 14,356 crore in the fourth quarter of 201718, with regards to the loss incurred on account of Nirav Modi fraud. According to the bank, the remaining amount will be covered in the three quarters of the current fiscal year. PNB further said it has paid Rs 6,586.11 crore to other banks to discharge its liabilities towards Letter of Undertakings (LoUs) and Foreign Letter of Credits (FLCs) issued fraudulently and in unauthorised manner to certain overseas branches of Indian banks through the misuse of SWIFT system of the bank, which was then not integrated with CBS (core banking solutions).

New Delhi: As multi-agency probe continues in India into alleged lapses involving ICICI Bank’s chief Chanda Kochhar and her family members, the matter has also come under the scanner of the US markets regulator SEC. Besides, the Indian regulators and investigative agencies are mulling seeking help from their overseas counterparts including in Mauritius as part of their own probes, officials said. When asked about its probe into matters related to ICICI Bank and Kochhar, a spokesperson for the SEC Office of Public Affairs declined to comment. The queries sent to ICICI Bank also remained unanswered. The bank has already instituted an independent enquiry into allegations of ‘conflict of interest’ and ‘quid pro quo’ in Kochhar’s dealing with certain borrowers. Earlier in March, when the reports first surfaced in this regard, the bank had said that its board has “full confidence and reposes full faith” in Kochhar. Sources said the SEC (Securities and Exchange Commission) is actively looking into the matter as ICICI Bank is listed in the US also and it may seek further details from its Indian counterpart the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi), which has already issued show-cause notices to ICICI Bank and Kochhar as part of its probe.

The lender’s gross non-performing assets or bad loans as on March 31, 2018, reached Rs 2.23 lakh crore.
