ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News Congress, Rahul responsible for triple talaq bill not being passed: BJP New Delhi : The BJP today held Congress president Rahul Gandhi responsible for the triple talaq bill not getting the parliamentary nod in the Monsoon Session, saying his party supported it in the Lok Sabha but not in the Rajya Sabha for its vote bank politics. Attacking Gandhi, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar said the government till last moment tried to ensure the passage of the bill, but Congress stalled its passage. “The triple talaq bill which ensures gender justice was unfortunately not allowed to be passed by Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi,” Kumar told reporters. He further said the Modi government is committed for the welfare of Muslim women. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad who also raised the issue in the Rajya Sabha where the bill was to be taken up for discussion, said the Congress today stands exposed, the party just wanted to stalled the passage of this landmark bill. “It is unfortunate and painful that more than 300 Muslim women have been given divorce after the Supreme Court judgement and this bill was very important but opposition has some other priorities,” he told reporters.

Releasing Rajiv Gandhi’s killers will have ‘international ramifications’, Centre tells SC New Delhi : Releasing the seven convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case will have “international ramifications” and will set “dangerous precedents”, the Centre told the Supreme Court on Friday while rejecting the Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to free the accused. “The central government, in pursuance of section 435 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, 1973, does not concur to the proposal of the government of Tamil Nadu contained in its communication letter dated March 2, 2016 for grant of further remission of sentence to these seven convicts,” Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) Joint Secretary V B Dubey said, while responding to a 2016 letter by the Tamil Nadu government, seeking the Centre’s concurrence on releasing the seven convicts. Emphasising that the trial court had given “cogent reasons” for imposing death penalty upon the accused and the apex court had termed the assassination an “unparallel act”, the government said, “… Releasing the four foreign nationals who had committed the gruesome murder of former prime minister of this country.

Rajya Sabha defers triple talaq bill to next session of Parliament

New Delhi : The Rajya Sabha Friday deferred the triple talaq bill to next session of Parliament as there was no consensus among the parties. Informing the upper house, Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu said, “Triple Talaq bill will not be taken up today because no consensus could be built around it.” Today is the last day of the Monsoon session of Parliament. The triple talaq bill aims to ‘set aside’ the centuries-old practice of instant divorce by men. It will now be taken up in the Winter session of Parliament and it could also be taken up as an ordinance. The move

comes a day after the Union Cabinet approved inclusion of a provision of granting bail to men accused of giving instant triple talaq to their wives. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said, “The offence has been made compoundable. If the wife and the husband desire to settle their differences, then the magistrate can compound the

offence on appropriate terms and conditions. Magistrate can grant bail after hearing the wife.” The amendments give power to the victim to approach a magistrate seeking “subsistence allowance” for herself and minor children. Besides these, a woman can also seek the custody of her minor children from the magistrate who will take a final call on the issue.

I apologise: Dalai Lama after remark on Jawaharlal Nehru

Bengaluru : Tibetan spiritual leader the Dalai Lama on Friday apologised for his statement that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was “self-centred.” On Wednesday, he had said Nehru had a “self-centred attitude” to become India’s first prime minister even though Mahatma Gandhi was in favour of Muhammad Ali Jinnah taking the top post at that time. He had also claimed India’s partition would not have happened if Mahatma Gandhi’s wish of Jinnah becoming the prime minister had materialised. “My statement has created a controversy. I apologise if I have said something wrong,” said the Dalai Lama, when he was asked by reporters to comment on what he meant by calling Nehru self-centred. “I felt pity when I heard that Mahatma Gandhi was opposed to partition… There are more Muslims in

India than in Pakistan, but past is past,” the Dalai Lama said. Addressing an event at the Goa Institute of Management in Sankhalim town on Wednesday, he said, “I think it was a little bit self-centred attitude of Pandit Nehru that he should be the prime minister… Mahatma Gandhiji’s thinking, if it had materialised, then India, Pakistan would have been united,” he said.

Kerala floods: Red alert in Idukki, 5 columns of Army deployed in northern districts

Thiruvananthapuram : In rain batteredKerala, a red alert has been issued for Idukki and its adjoining districts in view of the possibility of release of more water from the Idukki reservoir, while entry of tourists to the high-range district was stopped after roads caved in at many places. Five columns of Army has been deployed in the state’s northern districts since last night,

and small bridges have been constructed to evacuate people stranded at various places in Kozhikode and Wayanad. The Indian Navy has put on alert its Southern Naval Command in view of the rising water level in the Periyar river and a possible inundation of parts of Wellingdon Island surrounded by the backwaters of Kochi. Twenty-six people have lost their lives since August 8

State legislature has exclusive powers on preservation of cattle: Centre “All states/UTs have legislations on banning or restricting slaughter of cow and its progeny except five states viz Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland and one Union Territory that is Lakshadweep,” the minister said. New Delhi : Preservation of cattle is a matter on which state legislatures have exclusive powers, the government said on Friday, asserting that it was up to them to enact laws on cow slaughter. In a written reply, Minister of State for Environment Mahesh Sharma told the Lok Sabha that all states and union territories, except Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Lakshadweep, have legislations on banning or restricting slaughter of cow and its progeny. The reply comes in the backdrop of rising incidents of lynchings in the country over transportation of cattle. “Under the distribution of legislatives powers between the Union of India and states

under Article 246(3) of the Constitution, the preservation of cattle is a matter on which the legislature of the states have exclusive powers to legislate. “Therefore, it is up to the states to enact laws on slaughter of cows,” he said. The minister said, “All states/UTs have legislations on banning or restricting slaughter of cow and its progeny except five states viz Arunachal Pradesh, Kerala, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Nagaland and one Union Territory that is Lakshadweep.” He was also asked about the number of cases which came to the notice of the government regarding selling of beef by illegally slaughtering cows in abattoirs and the action taken in such cases.

TMC to hold rallies across Bengal against Assam’s NRC draft

Kolkata : The Trinamool Congress (TMC) will take out rallies across West Bengal tomorrow in protest against the publication of National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam, a senior leader of the party said. The state capital, however, has been exempted from tomorrow’s plan, TMC secretary-general and West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said here on Friday. BJP national president Amit Shah is set to address a public meeting in the central part of Kolkata on Saturday. “Barring Kolkata, we will organise rallies across the state in protest against the NRC. A separate rally will be taken out in the capital city on Sunday,” Chatterjee told reporters. The minister also accused the BJP-led Assam government of “deliberately omitting” Bengalis from the NRC draft. The complete draft of NRC was published on July 30 in

Rahul Gandhi claims Rafale deal ‘biggest defence scam’ ever, blames PM Modi Jaipur : Congress president Rahul Gandhi Friday called the Rafale deal the ‘biggest defence scam’ of the country, even as he blamed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for it. While speaking at the inauguration of a new office of the Chhattisgarh unit of the party in Raipur today, Gandhi said he didn’t get an answer from Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in the Parliament when he asked why she lied to the nation about the deal. “Maine Parliament mein Raksha Mantri se kaha ki apne Hindustan ko jhooth kyun bola? Jawab nahi mila.Jab maine Modi Ji ko kaha, wo apni aankh meri aaknh se nahi mila paye. Aapne TV mein dekha wo idhar udhar dekh rahe the. Kyun? Kyunki chowkidar bhaagidar ban gaya (I asked the Defence Minister in the Parliament about why she lied to the

country? I did not get any answer. When I told Modiji about this, he was not able to look me in the eye. You saw on TV how he was looking here and there. Why? Because chowkidaar had become the bhaagidaar),” Gandhi said in his address. Gandhi spoke on a host of issues, including the lack of investigation in Panama Papers case and increasing number of rapes in

blocked due to landslips, are safe and the Army’s help has been sought, state Tourism minister Kadakampally Surendran said, adding they will be shifted to the KTDC. People living downstream of Periyar and Cheruthoni rivers have been warned that there is a possibility of inundation of banks as torrential rain pounded the state for the second day in a row.

UP and Bihar. Attacking the BJP for the lack of investigation into the Panama Papers case, the Congress president drew parallels between Pakistan and Chhattisgarh. “When the name of former Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif appeared in Panama papers, he was convicted in it. In Chhattisgarh, when the name of your CM’s son comes in Panama papers, investigation doesn’t even begin. This is BJP-NDA’s ‘chowkidari’.” He further said that the Prime Minister never utters a word regarding rape incidents in UP and Bihar, adding that Indians are questioning “why women are being raped in BJP-ruled states”. He also took on the opposition claiming that what happened to women in last 4 years never happened in even 3,000 years.

Assam with 2.89 lakh names out of 3.29 applicants. Over 40 lakh people did not make it to the list. “Lakhs of Bengalis have been omitted from the NRC draft. It has been done deliberately. We demand that these names be included in the list as they are also Indians. You cannot make a person refugee in his own country,” Chatterjee added. Last week, the party had observed ‘black day’ across the state in protest against detention

of its MPs at Silchar airport in Assam. An eight-member TMC delegation that reached Silchar on August 2 to assess the situation in Assam in the wake of the NRC publication was not allowed to leave the airport. TMC supremo and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had claimed that the delegation members were manhandled at the airport and accused the BJP of imposing “super emergency” in the country.

Global & local factors contributed to rain fury in Kerala: Former ISRO chief Hyderabad : Eminent scientist and former ISRO chief G Madhavan Nair believes the monsoon fury in Kerala might be a part of “global phenomena” but local factors like deforestation and “invasion” of mountain slopes contributed significantly to flash floods and landslips in the state. He said from the statistics point of view, this week’s rainfall was a “peak” of the last 50 years, and was an “unusual phenomena” and could not be attributed to any systematic change. “Also, in many parts of Europe and other places, heat wave is going on. Maybe it (rain fury in Kerala) is part of global phenomena, it is my assessment,” Nair, who hails from Kerala, told PTI. But he hastened to add that “from one sample (the current spell), we cannot make a judgement. We have to keep

a watch. But it (the heavy rainfall) is not contributed by Kerala alone. (It being part of a global phenomena cannot be discounted).” Nair, who headed the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) from 2003-2009, said deforestation has contributed significantly to the weather change in Kerala, where torrential rains and landslips have claimed 26 lives so far. In addition, unauthorised invasion of mountain slopes caused landfall, he said. The veteran space scientist also said that the Kuttanad region, which is below the sea level, was not properly managed. The recommendations made by the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation on Kuttanad a few years ago had also not been implemented, he claimed.

Nature’s own way to fight greed

It is as though God has forsaken his ‘own country’. Kerala is witnessing nature’s fury on such a massive scale that nearly half of its area is on a red alert. Shutters of 23 dams across the state have been opened to let water flow downstream because the dams are receiving water from the torrential rains in their catchment areas at a rate they can hardly hold. The Idukki dam, for the first time since its construction, has opened all its five shutters and still the water level in the reservoir is showing no sign of letup. The water gushing down has taken a heavy toll of the area it is passing through by uprooting trees and devouring everything coming in its way, including roads and constructions along the banks. Keralites have not experienced such flood fury since 2013. And old timers have likened it to the ‘Flood of 99’, denoting the year 1099 in the Malayalam Era calendar, corresponding to 1924, when similar floods ravaged the state in the wake of non-stop rains. While this year’s monsoon fury may be part of the global phenomena of climatic changes, the ferocious manner in which rain water has crashed down the slopes is nature’s own way of retribution for human greed, the most vulgar form of which has been visible throughout the length and breadth of Kerala. The state has virtually been taken over by mafias of all hues, encroaching on river beds, forests and rocks, shaving off vegetative cover on massive stretches of lands and devouring hills to make way for settlements and mine materials to run those constructions. The wild fury of the flood has reclaimed much of the riverbeds, encroached by the real estate and construction mafias. Land being a scarce resource in Kerala, the encroachments have enjoyed political patronage, irrespective of which party or combination has been in power. And now it is nature’s turn to show the usurpers their place. Hopefully, those who are in charge will learn a few lessons. But it is a matter of great satisfaction that the relief and rescue operations have managed to limit loss of lives to the minimum. The casualties were mostly due to landslides, which occur in a flash that there is no scope for any precaution. So far, the toll has been fewer than 30, but the brute force of the downstream flow would have suggested much larger numbers. Teams of Army and National Disaster Response Force have done a creditable job, rescuing affected people and fending for them. Above all, people in the effected areas have shown a rare sense of accommodation and fortitude by taking matters in their stride. That has been a striking feature of the crisis, the depth of which will take some time to be known.

I think fashion should be literally an extension of your personality, not something you try to hard to do.” “People take a lot of fashion inspiration from movies, but a lot of people like designers, stylists, make-up artistes work hard to create our look. They put in a lot more thoughts then actors do,” she said

Atif Aslam trolled for singing Indian song at Pakistan Independence Day event Karachi : Pakistan’s singing sensation Atif Aslam has been trolled on social media and also criticized by the country’s mainstream media for singing a popular Bollywood song at a Pakistan Independence Day function in New York. Atif, who has lent his voice to many Bollywood songs, sang “Tera Hone Laga Hoon” from the 2009 film Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani at the function earlier this month. The performance prompted many of his fans back home to question his patriotism and also hit out at him. Zero respect

Before Gold, here’s looking back at the hockey The world is kind of a dangerous place film that left a lasting impact – Chak De India to live in right now: John Abraham New Delhi : Released in 2007, Chak De India, directed by Shimit Amin, brought hockey to the mainstream film audience. In hindsight, one can say that this was a risky film. Even though this was a stardriven vehicle with Shah Rukh Khan at the helm, it did not have any of the formulaic tropes that Hindi films are otherwise known for. The ensemble cast was not just a bunch of women who were there to support the lead character, their individuality was well sketched out in the film. Many of these actors are still known by their screen names from Chak De India and that’s a testament to the film’s treatment of its

characters. The film did not have the compulsory ‘love story’. On paper, it’s completely alright to have a story that isn’t a love story but somehow that’s not how mainstream Bollywood functions, even till date. The film gave us an insight about its character’s personal lives but we weren’t burdened with an

unnecessary love angle. With Shah Rukh Khan, the ‘King of Romance’ playing the lead role, this was a great example of showing restraint. Chak De India evoked a sense of patriotism without tapping into any kind of jingoism, which in today’s age is quite rare. Even though we know that the team

wanted to win for the country’s honour, each character had their motive for winning too. Akshay Kumar starrer Gold is all set to release on this Independence Day and while the actor has clearly stated that these two films are completely different, comparisons will be made.

New Delhi : John Abraham says at a time when the world is getting polarised, it is important that one community is not blamed for everything that goes wrong in the society. The 45-year-old actor, who has made a number of films dealing with patriotism, including his next release Satyamev Jayate, was asked about the lynching incidents in the country and how religion has become a controversial topic today. “The whole world is getting polarised and by polarised I mean that it is going against a particular community right now. It has become our mindset that if there is something wrong, then that particular community is causing all the harm.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu trailer: Shahid Kapoor goes the Akshay Kumar way

New Delhi : The makers of Toilet Ek Prem Katha are exploring the issue of power theft in their next film titled Batti Gul Meter Chalu. Starring Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor and Yami Gautam in the lead roles, the trailer of the film was released today. Though many documentaries, like Katiyabaaz, have been made on the subject, Batti Gul Meter Chalu is the first feature film which highlights the problem of electricity theft in India. Set in a small town of Uttrakhand, Shree Narayan Singh has tried to bring to the fore the issue by intertwining it with friendship. Shahid, an advocate by profession, is a carefree man until his friend played by actor Divyenndu Sharma commits suicide under the pressure of paying a hefty amount of Rs 1.5 lakh as his electricity bill. From this point onward, his life’s only purpose is to seek justice for his friend. Apart from awakening the responsible friend in Shahid, Shraddha Kapoor doesn’t seem to add much to the story and Yami Gautam gets little screen time in the trailer. The first half of the three-minute long trailer leaves you confused and you might want to replay it to understand what’s happening in the film. It’s only in the second half that you are able to join the dots and find a story in this mess. Talking about the film, Batti Gul Meter Chalu director Shree Narayan Singh said, “Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a subject close to my heart. I know the problems the interiors of the country face thanks to the fluctuations of electricity.

Abhinav Bindra hopes to find fellow Indian gold medal winner in Tokyo 2020

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Abhinav Bindra said that he remains hopeful of seeing an Indian joining him in the list of Olympic champions.

New Delhi : In a “lonely” club for a decade now, India’s only individual Olympic champion Abhinav Bindra’s pragmatism mingled with optimism as he hoped that not one but a few more will crowd the place come Tokyo 2020. He has been hoping and will continue to remain hopeful, Bindra, who has grown 10 years older since scripting history on a balmy August evening at Beijing in 2008, told PTI in an interaction.“I am hoping for young Indian athletes to join me. I am quite positive and, as an athlete, I am conditioned to remain hopeful. Hopefully, we will have some Olympic champions in a couple of years,”

Karim Benzema’s blackmail case heads for possible final hearing

Thanks to Indian coach, words are not lost in translation anymore: Sardar Singh

Bindra said. The 35-year-old, who has been appointed to the International Olympic Committee’s prestigious Athletes’ Commission, was referring to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Bindra, who is now a businessman and runs the Abhinav Bindra High Performance Centre, looks back to his biggest moment with nostalgia. “Well obviously that was a wonderful moment of my life, dreamt about it for 15 years. I look back with a great sense of satisfaction and a sense nostalgia. “Hopefully, it inspires Indian athletes to win. My time is over and I hope the present generation of Indian athletes remain inspired and it propels them to glory,” Bindra said.

New Delhi : Senior players Sardar Singh and Manpreet Singh say having an Indian as the national team’s head coach has broken all communication barriers and tactically too Harendra Singh is no less than any of his foreign counterparts. Harendra, who was appointed in May, coached India to a second straight runners-up finish at the Champions Trophy last month. “I still remember Harendra paaji had called me to a national camp 15-16 years ago. We go back a long way. I played under him even when he was assisting Jose Brasa in 2009,” Sardar told PTI. “It is a different feeling working with an Indian coach. We can discuss anything with him under the sun. He also openly

advises us and knows that as senior players we can’t change our game completely,” he added. There is still time to explain things during training but absorbing coach’s advice during the two-minute break between quarters can be tough. That is where Harendra has made a massive difference. “If you see he has given results whether it is with the women’s team or the men’s junior side which won the World Cup. He has worked with the best of coaches. One big positive (after his arrival) is that we all communicate in Hindi now. “With foreigners, even if you miss a single point during those twominute breaks it can create confusion in the minds of the players.

Mumbai: The Paris Appeal Court will have another look at the case surrounding Real Madrid and France player Karim Benzema for his alleged role in the blackmail of fellow Frenchman Mathieu Valbuena on October, reports news agency AFP quoting sources. There has been no hearing into the case since July 2017 when France’s highest court, the Court of Cassation, annuled a Versailles Court of Appeal decision to send the striker Benzema to trial for allegedly attempting to blackmail Valbuena over a sex tape and ordered the Paris court to review the original ruling. The case began in June 2015 when Valbuena received a call from a blackmailer who threatened to publicise an intimate video. The footballer contacted the police who assigned an undercover officer to investigate

the case. The investigators accused Benzema of acting as an intermediary between the presumed blackmailers and Valbuena. Following the allegations and with the case underway, Benzema was dropped from the France squad for Euro 2016 and has not been recalled since, including in recent World Cup winning exploits in Russia. Benzema and three of the other suspects in the case had asked for the case against them to be dropped. They’ve claimed that police used “dishonest” means by posing as Valbuena’s friend in a telephonic conversation with one of the accused people and urged to pay ransom. An appeal made to the Court of Appeal in Versailles failed in December 2016 but Court of Cassation then annulled that decision and instructed the Paris Court of Appeal to hear the case again.

Spanish taxman writes off 2 million from Cristiano Ronaldo’s settlement: Report Mumbai: Spain’s tax authorities have reportedly agreed to whipe off two million euros from the settlement offer handed to former Real Madrid player Cristiano Ronaldo. After being ordered to pay 18.8 million euros ($21.6 million) to settle the tax fraud claim, a further two million have been shaved off that figure, reports Spanish daily El Mundo. Ronaldo was accused of hiding income generated from image rights while playing for the Los Blancos. As per the punishment handed

down, it included a two-year jail sentence which he won’t serve. El Mundo report the Portuguese player had paid two million extra last year for his image rights sold in 2014. This means he is supposed to pay the remaining 16.7 million euros. Ronaldo had, reportedly, already paid 13.4 million euros. The tax agreement also suggests that the court hearing the case proceedings had dropped charges against Ronaldo’s agent Jorge Mendes. If the player had not come to an

Business

agreement with the tax authorities, he would have been handed a 28 million euros fine and a three-anda-half-year jail term. Ronaldo is not the lone superstar to undergo trial for tax evasion. Barcelona’s Argentinian star Lionel Messi, paid a two-million-euro fine in 2016 in his own tax wrangle and received a suspended 21-month jail term. The prison sentence was later reduced with the fine going up by 252,000 euros or 400 euros a day of the original term.

As laundry experts, Bosch’s #NoDamage technology tasted success in front loading washing machine category and is now also available in top loader washing machines, with this launch Bosch will introduce this new age technology to the larger size of consumers. Even as one of the leaders in the front loaders category, we realised that in India most households are largely accustomed to top loaders.

international Trump doubles tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminum, says relations ‘not good’

Washington : US President Donald Trump said on Friday he had authorized higher tariffs on imports from Turkey, imposing a 20 percent duty on aluminum and 50 percent one on steel, as tensions mount between the two NATO allies over Ankara’s detention of an evangelical pastor and other diplomatic issues. “I have just authorized a doubling of Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum with respect to Turkey as their currency, the Turkish Lira, slides rapidly downward against our very strong Dollar!” Trump said in an early morning post on Twitter. “Aluminum will now be 20 percent and Steel 50 percent. Our relations with Turkey are not good at this time!” Trump’s announcement came less than an hour after Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan urged Turks to help defend the country against what he called economic war against the country. Erdogan appealed to a crowd in the city of Bayburt to exchange dollars and gold for Turkish lira to prop up the plunging currency. The United States, the world’s biggest steel importer, imposed tariffs of 25 percent on steel and 10 percent on aluminum in March for imports from a variety of countries.

Indonesia quake: Death toll climbs to more than 320

Indonesia : The death toll from a huge 6.9 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia’s Lombok island has climbed to more than 320, officials said on Friday, even as relief efforts picked up the pace. The national disaster mitigation agency said it had verified 321 deaths and that over 270,000 people had been forced to flee their homes because of a series of tremors over the past two weeks. On Thursday, the death toll from Sunday’s quake jumped to 259. A fresh 5.9 magnitude aftershock prompted fresh panic in the north of the popular holiday destination on Thursday. Nearly 75 per cent of residential structures have been destroyed in northern Lombok because of poor construction unable to withstand strong tremors, the agency said in a statement. “Aid is being distributed as quickly as possible upon arrival,” Sutopo Nugroho, spokesman for the agency said in a statement, adding that hundreds of volunteers were assisting the efforts. Mobile kitchens have started distributing much-needed food and water to thousands of evacuees in the worst-hit areas, he said, after several days’ delay due to poor access and communications. President Joko Widodo on Friday said he was delaying plans to visit Lombok until next week, citing concerns over continuing aftershocks.

Maldives wants India to withdraw helicopters, personnel even as it woos China

New Delhi : The Maldives wants India to withdraw military helicopters and personnel posted there following the expiry of an agreement in June, its envoy said, the latest snub to New Delhi by President Abdulla Yameen’s China-backed government. India and China are going head to head in the Maldives, the Indian Ocean island chain where Beijing is building roads, bridges and a bigger airport, upstaging India which has been the country’s prime provider of military and civilian aid for decades. India has opposed Yameen’s crackdown on political rivals and the imposition of an emergency this year and some of the president’s rivals have called on New Delhi for military intervention, creating worries in the Maldivian government. The tensions are impacting aid programmes such as security assistance that New Delhi has given to smaller countries in the region to help them protect exclusive economic zones, carry out surveys and combat piracy. The Maldives’ ambassador in India, Ahmed Mohamed, told Reuters that two military helicopters provided by India were mainly used for medical evacuations but were no longer required as the islands had built up enough resources of its own. “They were very useful in the past but with the development of adequate infrastructure, facilities and resources we are now in a position to handle medical evacuations on our own,” he said.
