According to the sources, Pakistani army seldom acknowledge the death of its personnel and count them as civilian casualties in certain cases. New Delhi: In a bid to address privacy concerns, the UIDAI on Wednesday introduced a new concept of ‘Virtual ID’, which Aadhaar-card holder can generate from its website and give for various purposes, including SIM verification, instead of sharing the actual 12-digit biometric ID. This will give the users the option of not sharing their Aadhaar number at the time of authentication. The Virtual ID, which would be a random 16-digit number, together with biometrics of the user would give any

authorised agency like a mobile company, limited details like name, address and photograph, which are enough for any verification. Officials said a user can generate as many Virtual IDs as he or she wants. The older ID gets automatically cancelled once a fresh one is generated. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has also introduced the concept of ‘limited KYC’ under which it will only provide needbased or limited details of a user to an authorised agency that is providing a particular service, say,

gns, New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday directed a reinvestigation of 186 cases closed earlier by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots case. The apex court said it would constitute a fresh three-member SIT, to be headed by a former high court judge, to monitor probe into the cases, that followed the assassination of former prime minister Indira Gandhi in 1984.A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra asked the Centre to suggest names on

a telco. The Virtual ID will be a temporary and revocable 16 digit random number mapped to a person’s Aadhaar number and the Aadhaar-issuing body will start accepting it from March 1, 2018. From June 1, 2018 it will be compulsory for all agencies that undertake authentication to accept the Virtual ID from their users. Agencies that do not migrate to the new system to offer this additional option to their users by the stipulated deadline will face financial disincentives. “Aadhaar number holder can use Virtual ID in lieu of Aadhaar number

SC doesn’t have right to ‘make’ law: Muslim law board on triple talaq

Aurangabad: The All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) on Tuesday raised questions over the Supreme Court’s move in the triple talaq issue and said the court does not have the right to ‘make’ the law. A member of the board, Maulana Ata Ur Rehman Rashdi, said the work of the Supreme Court is to make decisions within the purview of

whenever authentication or KYC services are performed. Authentication may be performed using the Virtual ID in a manner similar to using Aadhaar number,” a UIDAI circular said. The move aims to strengthen the privacy and security of Aadhaar data and comes amid heightened concerns around the collection and storage of personal and demographic data of individuals. Users can go to the UIDAI website to generate their virtual ID which will be valid for a defined period of time or till the user decides to change it.

law and not to ‘make’ the law. “This very role of the court is a violation of basic rights which can never be accepted. The interference of the apex court and the government in the Shariat laws is also wrong,” Maulana maintained. Meanwhile, the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2017 seeks to criminalise instant divorce, triple talaq. The bill was passed in the Lok Sabha with most of the leading parties in the Opposition, including the Congress, voting in favour, but with caveats. The bill, if enacted, will make triple talaq a criminal offence. It proposes a three-year jail term for a Muslim man who divorces his wife in any form of spoken, written or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp.

Shah also hailed Prime Minister Modi’s ‘Ujjwala Yojana’, adding the Centre had provided free LPG connection to 3.33 lakh poor women of Karnataka. In a no-holdsbarred attack, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday alleged BJP, RSS and Bajrang Dal have terrorists within their organisations, a charge rubbished by the saffron party.

Modi’s doublespeak on ‘Make In India’ exposed: Cong on Govt’s FDI decision

gns, New Delhi: The Congress on Wednesday accused the BJP of adopting “double-speak” on allowing 100 per cent FDI in single brand retail and criticised it for relaxing the 30 per cent outsourcing clause. Senior Congress leader Anand Sharma said that 100 per cent FDI in single brand retail was notified during the previous UPA government and the only change made is to allow it through the automatic route. “The prime minister talks of ‘Make in India’, but now says local sourcing is not required,” he said, and asked the the government to clarify its policy on multi-brand retail. Congress communications incharge Randeep Surjewala alleged that by doing away with the requirement of 30 per cent sourcing through ‘Make in India’, the prime minister has exposed his duplicity and doublespeak on the issue. Sharma said the policy on multi-brand retail enumerated by the previous UPA government stands and has not been reversed. He asked the government to clarify on its policy to assure investors as they had earlier threatened to reverse that policy.

Manohar Parrikar gives green signal to ‘Padmavat’ release in Goa gns, Panaji: Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday confirmed that Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s ‘Padmavati’, now titled ‘Padmavat’, would release in the state. “’Padmavat’ has been given a censor certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The state government does not have a problem to screen it in the cinema halls in Goa,” Parrikar told the media. Parrikar further said, in case of any law and

order issue, the state would look into it. The Goa Police had expressed apprehension about the film being screened in the state during the peak tourist season. They had written a letter to the state government asking to ban the movie’s screening in the state during peak tourist season. ‘Padmavat’ will hit the big screen on January 25. The movie, based on the legend of Hindu Rajput queen Rani Padmini, has been facing protests from various groups.

Even cuts add to ‘Padmavati’ fad

W hether or not it will be a box office hit, there is something in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati, now officially Padmavat, that makes imagination run riot. There has already been much trouble over whether the story is from history, fiction or a mixture of both. It has now been stated that the film will hit the screen on January 25, after it has been cleared by the CBFC. Censor Board chairman Prasoon Joshi is on record that the film, based on a 16th-century poem on legendary queen Padmini, is being given a U/A certificate after 5 modifications, as agreed to by the producers. The changes were suggested after an expert panel of historians and representatives of the former Mewar royal family and others reviewed the content. The most important of all changes, of course, was the change in the name from Padmavati to Padmavat, but still leaving scope for ambiguity. The producers had earlier claimed that the story was partially ‘based on historical facts’. The rumour mill is not ready to be content with whatever has been stated so far. All forms of media, including the social media, are abuzz with the revelation that the film has been cleared after 300 cuts. And the number seems to be sticking despite the best efforts of the authorities to clarify. The extent of agreed changes may have necessitated numerous cuts; so 300 need not be an impossible number. All references to Delhi, Chittor and Mewar were to be removed. Karni Sena, the self-styled group that seeks to protect the interests of the Rajputs had launched an agitation and even threatened violence to protest against the depiction of Rani Padmavati, assumed to be the central character in the plot of the Deepika Padukone-starrer. The Rajput objection purportedly was to a dance sequence suggesting romance between Alauddin Khilji and queen Padmavati. The film’s makers repeatedly denied the existence of such a sequence in the movie, but the protestors were not ready to take it. Passions ran so high that some BJP-ruled states, obviously with an eye on the then impending Gujarat elections as well as in keeping with the craftfully created nationalistic fervour, banned screening of the film in their respective states. The producers insist that there is nothing against the Rajputs or Hindus in the film. They also discount the alleged claim of historical background, saying the film is based on the poem ‘Padmavat by 16th century Sufi poet Malik Muhammad Jayasi. Shrouded in so much mystery, suspense and controversies, Bhansali may have ensured the success of his creation in the box office. The only uncertainty seems to be that it clashes with the release of similarly named ‘PadMan’ by Balki, starring Akshay Kumar, Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte.

bollywood special Anushka Sharma’s new poster will send chills down your spine

gns, Mumbai : After a fairytale wedding with Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli in December, Anushka Sharma is coming to haunt us in our dreams in a never-seen-before avatar this Holi. We are talking about Anushka’s upcoming film Pari. Releasing a brief yet chilling teaser of the film, Anushka Sharma wrote on Twitter, “Sweet dreams guys…” The teaser also reveals the new release date for Pari which is March 2. The posters of Pari which were released last year had already created a lot of buzz among movie goers. Anushka’s haunting stare and scarred face was not something one could easily forget. Now in an extended version of the same, the teaser shows Anushka become a bloody and lacerated version of herself. The stoic expression also continues, but with gory red eyes this time. The tagline of the film reads, “Pari, not a fairytale.” If the 18 seconds clip has made us so excited to see Anushka in this new avatar, we wonder what will happen when the trailer is released. A new poster has also been released by the makers recently where for the first time, we stand face-to-face with the supernatural force that haunts Anushka’s character in the film. It has been long since Bollywood saw a good big-ticket horror film and Anushka’s Pari is promising exactly that till now. Talking about Pari’s release date, the film was earlier scheduled to release on February 9 and clash with Aiyaary which stars Sidharth Malhotra, Rakul Preet and Manoj Bajpayee in the lead roles.

Kaalakaandi could be just what the doctor ordered for Saif Ali Khan

Mumbai : Happy birthday Hrithik Roshan: From Sussanne Khan to Akshay Kumar, wishes pour in for Super 30 actorHappy birthday Hrithik Roshan: From Sussanne Khan to Akshay Kumar, wishes pour in for Super 30 actor Happy birthday Hrithik Roshan: Here’s why the Super 30 actor is Bollywood’s true ‘Greek God’Happy birthday Hrithik Roshan: Here’s why the Super 30 actor is Bollywood’s true ‘Greek God’ After Kaho Naa Pyaar Hai, the turning point in Hrithik Roshan’s life was Koi Mil Gaya, which had released in 2003. The film was a shot in the arm for the sci-fi genre in Bollywood. Soon, the film lead to a franchise and we were introduced to superhero Krrish. With Krrish,

Hrithik became popular among kids and went beyond just being referred to as the Greek God. Now, on the occasion of his 44th birthday, the actor’s father and filmmaker Rakesh Roshan made an announcement much to the delight of Hrithik’s fans. In the last two installments of Krrish, Priyanka Chopra was the female lead. However, nothing has been revealed about who would star opposite Hrithik in the fourth film of the series. Meanwhile, Hrithik will be seen as Patna-based mathematician Anand Kumar in a biopic titled Super 30. The biopic, which is helmed by Vikas Bahl, will showcase the life of the mathematician, who trains 30 deserving, economically backward students for IIT-JEE — the entrance exams of IIT — each year, with a commendable success rate.

Mumabi : Saif Ali Khan has always tried to experiment with his roles in the past, but will his upcoming film Kaalakaandi finally help establish that his entire career has not been a fluke? Saif Ali Khan has had an interesting career graph. From doing typical 1990s dramas to playing the man that has commitment issues, Khan has tried to adjust with changing times. In fact, this is even more reflective in the period he began taking risks in terms of the roles he chose to portray on screen. Kya Kehna, Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega, Dil Chahta Hai, Darna Mana Hai, Ek Hasina Thi, Parineeta, Salaam Namaste, Being Cyrus, Omkara, Eklavya: The Royal Guard and Aarakshan: the evolution of Saif the actor is there for all to see. The actor’s last release, Chef, was an Indian remake of the American movie of the same name. Chef was a slice-of-life film directed by Raja Krishna Menon about a failing chef and father trying to get his life in order, professionally as well as personally. Granted, it was not as good as the original, but was definitely worth a watch.Saif will next be seen in debutant director Akshat Verma’s dark comedy Kaalakaandi. In an interview, Akshat, who has also written the movie, had asked people not to compare it with another dark comedy that he had penned– Delhi Belly. Kaalakaandi’s trailer is every bit as edgy and quirky as Delhi Belly, so it is hard not to draw a comparison, especially since we know that the writer is the same.

nine. But beyond that, the actor has more reasons to be happy about. A few days back, Akshay Kumar had released the first look of Kesari, his film in collaboration with Karan Johar. Now, Karan has announced that Parineeti will play the female lead in Kesari. At present, Parineeti Chopra is keeping herself busy with Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, which is a Yash Raj Films production. The film brings back the Ishqzaade jodi of Arjun Kapoor and Parineeti. Parineeti will be seen as a fiercely ambitious girl in the film. Parineeti opened up about her character and

the equation she shares with Arjun, on-screen and off-screen. “Arjun has certainly evolved as one of the bankable actors that there is today, which is a huge achievement. Arjun’s understanding of the craft and his eagerness to learn sets him apart. With Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar, we are doing a very intense film together… We are at loggerheads in the movie,” she said in an interview earlier. Akshay, on the other hand, is busy promoting his Republic Day release PadMan, which is based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham.

Aanchal wins India’s 1st international skiing medal, PM Modi lauds feat

Mumbai: The squad for Mithali Raj-led Indian women’s cricket team’s tour to South Africa was announced on Wednesday. The tour to the African nation will be a part of the ongoing ICC Women’s World Championship. The team features most of the finalists from the ICC Women’s World Cup in England last year. The visitors lost the final to England in July last year. The team will be led by Mithali Raj, with Harmanpreet Kaur being the vice-captain. “The All-India Women’s Selection Committee has named the ODI squad for India Women’s Tour to South Africa. The Indian Women’s Cricket Team will play three ODIs against South Africa Women as part of the ICC Women’s Championship (2017-2020) in February,” a BCCI statement said. gns, Erzurum: Aanchal Thakur scripted history on Tuesday after winning the first-ever medal for India in an international skiing competition. The 21-year-old won bronze at Alpine Ejder 3200 Cup in the slalom race category which was organised by Skiing’s international governing body, International Ski Federation at the Palandoken Ski Centre, in Erzurum in Turkey. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday congratulated the Manali girl for her feat, stating the entire country was ecstatic for her historic

accomplishment. “Well done @alleaanchal for winning an international medal in skiing! The entire nation is ecstatic on your historic accomplishment at the FIS International Skiing Competition in Turkey. Wishing you the very best for your future endeavours,” Modi wrote on Twitter.

The Manali skier’s father who is the secretary general of the Winter Games Federation of India (WGFI) termed his daughter’s achievement as a breakthrough for the sport. “Months of training have finally borne fruit. I started well and managed to take a good lead, which helped later in getting

the third-place finish. Aanchal called me on WhatsApp and showed me the medal. I thought it was some kind of a souvenir given at the end of every FIS event! But she told me that she won a bronze. This is a breakthrough for the sport in India and the entire skiing fraternity is proud of her achievement,” Roshan Thakur told the Times of India. He was also optimistic about receiving financial help from the government. “I hope Aanchal’s medal helps our cause (in getting financial support from the Centre).

New Delhi: Former opener Virender Sehwag reckons that India now only have around “30 per cent chance” of making a comeback in the three-Test series against South Africa after losing the opening encounter by 72 runs. “As of now, it looks like only 30 per cent chance is there of making a comeback. It is going to be very tough from now on. Also, the Indian team management should look whether conditions at the Centurion warrant a place for Ravichandran Ashwin,” Sehwag told ‘India TV’ on Wednesday. Sehwag is of the opinion that India should go in with six specialist batsmen and four bowlers. “India can go in with an extra batsman in Ajinkya Rahane. They should also try to go in with four specialist bowlers. If India want

to win, Virat and Rohit will need to play a big role,” the dashing opener of yesteryears said. Sehwag, who hit a hundred on debut in Bloemfontein back in 2001, advised the team to leave as many deliveries outside the off-stump as possible. “Don’t fiddle with deliveries outside the off-stump will be my advise to the batsmen. Play as straight as possible. “Your ‘go to’ shots should be straight drive and flick. Get prepared to be hurt by some short stuff. Rather than trying to fend off short balls, get prepared to take blows on your body,” was Sehwag’s advise. “The tennis ball bounce in South Africa means that it will be very difficult for any batsman to get bowled. So one needs to stay positive and try to score runs at the rate of at least three runs per over,” he concluded.

Pathan was on Tuesday handed a five-month retrospective suspension for failing a dope test, a sanction which will end on January 14.

Yusuf Pathan’s doping case still active, saysWADAasBCCIbannearscompletion gns, Mumbai: Cricketer Yusuf Pathan might soon be completing BCCI’s retroactive fivemonth ban imposed on him for a first-time dope offense but as per the World Anti Doping Agency’s protocol, the case is an active one. Indian all-rounder Pathan was on Tuesday handed a five-month retrospective suspension for failing a dope test, a sanction which will end on January 14 after the BCCI accepted his plea that the violation was inadvertent. “As this is a pending case, we are not in a position to comment,” informed

Maggie Durand, WADA’s Manager, Media Relations and Communications in response to an email query by PTI whether the period of the ban imposed on him was WADA- compliant. As per WADA Doping Code of 2015, a first-time offense automatically invokes a four-year suspension. The BCCI had said in a statement, “Mr Yusuf Pathan hasbeen suspended for a doping violation. Mr. Pathan had inadvertently ingested a prohibited substance, which can be commonly found in cough syrups.” The 35-year-old Pathan, a member of the

victorious Indian 2011 World Cup squad, had provided a urine sample as part of the BCCI’s antidoping testing program during a domestic T20 competition on March 16 last year. “His sample was subsequently tested and found to contain Terbutaline. Terbutaline, a specified substance, is prohibited both In and Out of Competition in the WADA Prohibited List of Substances,” the BCCI stated. The allrounder, who has played 57 ODIs and 22 T20 Internationals for India, was charged with the “commission of an Anti-

Doping Rule Violation (ADRV) under the BCCI Anti-Doping Rules (ADR) Article 2.1 and provisionally suspended pending determination of the charge”. “Mr. Pathan responded to the charge by admitting the ADRV and asserting that it was caused by his ingestion of a medication containing Terbutaline that had been mistakenly given to him instead of the medication prescribed for him, which did not contain any prohibited substance,” the BCCI explained. The BCCI said it is “satisfied” with Pathan’s explanation that he was using the medication.

India allows 49 per cent foreign investment in state-run airline

New Delhi: Foreign airlines will be able to buy up to 49 percent ofAir India under new rules approved by the government on Wednesday to boost the debt-laden flag carrier. Once the country’s monopoly airline, Air India has slowly lost market share to new lowcost private players in one of the world’s fastestgrowing airline markets. The government said last June it was open to selling a stake in the stateowned airline, which has developed a reputation for delays, cancellations and poor service. On Wednesday the cabinet rubber-stamped plans to allow foreign airlines to invest up to 49 per cent in Air India, subject to government approval. That was part of a series of moves to relax restrictions on foreign investment. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s right-wing government has sought to encourage foreign companies to invest in India since coming to power in 2014.

Mumbai: Benchmark Sensex ended marginally lower on Wednesday after a four-session winning streak as investors booked profits in auto, consumer durables, capital goods, PSU and banking shares ahead of third-quarter results. It was a volatile session as the BSE 30-share barometer opened with strength and rallied to a fresh life-time high of 34,565.63. However, it succumbed to profit booking, before finally ending at 34,433.07 points, down by 10.12 points, or 0.03 per cent. Serie A: Juventus’ Scudetto supremacy under threat, feels Sami Khedira Turin: German international midfielder Sami Khedira believes Juventus face the biggest threat this season to their Serie A supremacy. Juventus last year became the first team to win six consecutive Serie A titles and are just one point behind leaders Napoli midway through this campaign. “This year is different from last year and two years ago. At the top of Serie A there are a lot of strong teams and all at the same level,” the 30-year-old former Real

Madrid player told Sky Sport Italia. “Napoli but also Inter, Roma and Lazio, and of course Juventus. For this reason it will be even harder to win the Scudetto, we have to work harder than ever to try to take it home. “I think it will be more complicated to repeat this season.” The Scudetto is not the only goal this season for the Turin giants as they resume the Champions League in February against English club Tottenham.

Railways to focus on branding to promote rail tourism

gns, New Delhi: To promote rail tourism in the country, the railways has asked its zonal arms and public sector undertakings to outsource their ticketing and catering works to IRCTC and concentrate on branding. The instruction came days after a parliamentary committee in its report blamed the national transporter for not doing enough to promote rail tourism. In a letter on January 3, Railway Board chairman Ashwani Lohani has asked all zonal railways to promote the brand of rail

tourism on select routes. He has asked them to identify tourist and luxury trains and brand them both on the interior and exterior. Lohani has also asked rail PSUs such as Indian Railway Finance Corporation and Ircon International, and zonal railways to give the catering contracts for all events, seminars and programmes held outside rail premises to IRCTC, the railways’ catering and tourism arm. Senior zonal railway officials have been told that the responsibility of managing such events should also be entrusted

with Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC). PSUs under the transport behemoth have also been asked to book air tickets for all its personnel from the IRCTC website, thus promoting the brand. Soon after the parliamentary standing committee report was tabled, Lohani held a meeting with the travel and trade community where the issue of promotion of luxury trains was raised. In fact, the committee said that there was a lacuna in the branding of such trains. Lohani has also addressed one of the major grouses of the travel community which said that the running schedules of such trains were not made clear. In order to cut down on delays, the board has now entrusted the Director, Coaching as the nodal officer for luxury trains. The official can now be directly approached for approval on any scheduling.

Ahmedabad RPO issued 22.4% more passports in 2017 gns, AHMEDABAD: The Regional Passport Office, Ahmedabad, has registered a 22.4% growth in the number of passports issued in 2017 as compared to 2016. The Ahmedabad RPO issued a total of 6,45,261 passports in 2017 against around 5,27,000 passports issued in 2016. null “From January 2017 to December 2017, about 1.18 lakh more passport were issued as compared to 2016 (January to December),” said regional passport officer, Ahmedabad, Neelam Rani. “The reason is simple. With the RPO opening Passport Seva Kendras (PSKs) at post offices, including one each in Bhuj, Palanpur and Dahod, more and more people are applying for them.” Rani further said that this year there were around 45,000 applications for passports submitted at the three PSKs in post offices. She further said that the department has also decided that it would be adding another eight more PSKs. These will be opened at post offices in

the state this year, she said. Rani further said that this year, there would be two major changes in passports issued. One would be that there would be two differentcoloured passports. “For those who fall in Emigration Check Required (ECR) categories of Indian passport holders, the colour will be orange while for those for the educated class who do not require an ECR, the passports will be blue in colour,” Rani said. She further said that they had taken a decision to remove the last page of the passport which contains some personal information about the applicant (parents and spouse details, address, among others). “Since the ECR remark is made on the last page, MEA is introducing multi-coloured passports for different ECR and ECNR categories,” Rani said. About the last page, she said that there are some booklets still available. “Once they are exhausted, the new ones will not have the last page where personal information is printed,” Rani said.
