Mediapart quoted an internal Dassault Aviation document detailing a presentation that deputy chief executive officer Loïk Segalen gave to worker representatives explaining the rationale for setting up a joint venture in Nagpur with Reliance Aerospace. Supreme Court orders nine properties of Amrapali Group to be sealed

New Delhi : In further trouble for beleaguered Amrapali real estate group, which is facing lawsuits by homebuyers, the Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered sealing of nine of its properties where account books of its 46 group companies are kept. A bench of Justice Arun Mishra and Justice U U Lalit ordered the sealing of Amrapali properties in Noida, Greater Noida, Rajgir and Buxar in Bihar and asked the keys to be handed over to the SC registrar. The SC order came after three directors of the real estate group, who were sent to police custody

on Tuesday, informed the bench that all documents relating to 46 group companies were stacked in the nine properties. Anil Kumar Sharma, Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar were sent to police custody after they failed to hand over all the documents related to the accounts of the companies to the forensic auditors twice — on September 12 and 26. The court clarified that it was “not arresting them” and that police presence was only till the documents are seized and handed over. The apex court further said that only court-appointed forensic auditors and their authorised

Durga Puja is scheduled to be held this year from October 16 to October 20. State advocate general Kishore Dutta said the decision to grant the money was taken so that the organisers could initiate a road safety campaign, and pointed out that the court cannot interfere in the executive order. “There is no question of victory or defeat. But there are a few professional litigants who want to retard Bengal. We are grateful to the court for its verdict,” remarked urban development minister Firhad Hakim. One of the petitioners, Sourav Dutta, 49, and his counsel Bikash Ranjan Bhattacharyaa, a former mayor of Kolkata, said they were planning to move the Supreme Court against the order. “Our means are limited but at this stage we just cannot leave the fight,” said Bhattacharyaa. BJP Bengal unit’s general secretary, Sayantan Basu, said: “We have the highest regard for the legal system and, therefore, I would not like make any comment on the order.”

Rahul Gandhi may meet HAL employees in Bengaluru

New Delhi : The Congress is set to up its ante against the Rafale deal in the run-up to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections with party chief Rahul Gandhi likely to meet the employees’ union of the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), the state-run aircraft maker, during his visit to Bengaluru on October 13. A Congress functionary familiar with the development said the venue of the meeting between Gandhi and the HAL employees is being finalised. representatives could enter the premises of the nine properties to be sealed. On September 12, the apex court had appointed Ravi Bhatia and Pawan Kumar Agarwal

Because of the denial of the Rafale contract, they will be throwing out 10,000 people and they will be denying 10,000 jobs to new people,” he said. Reddy, who heads a party panel of talking heads on the Rafale deal, said HAL is not only in Bengaluru but in various parts of India. “HAL would have benefitted in so many ways had it got the offset contract. It would have been able to absorb the Transfer of Technology and manufactured aircraft. Under the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) contract, HAL were to manufacture 90 aircraft, though, of course in technical collaboration with Dassault Aviation,” he said.

while Jammu and Ladakh regions had witnessed over 65 per cent voting. The total poll per cent of the state after two phases stands at 47.2 per cent, with Jammu and Kashmir regions contributing 67.7 per cent and 8.3 per cent respectively. Govt issues norms for minimum Ganga flow

New Delhi : The central government on Wednesday notified the minimum environmental flows for river Ganga that has to be maintained at various locations on the river. Environmental flows refer to the acceptable flow regimes that are required to maintain a river in the desired environmental or predetermined state. “The discussions on notifying environmental flow of Ganga have been going on for a long time. We have taken this step to ensure a minimum amount of flow in the river”, Union minister of Water Resources, River Development & Ganga Rejuvenation Nitin Gadkari said at a press conference on Wednesday. The notification issued by the government aims to ensure that the river has the minimum required environmental flow of water even after the river flow gets diverted by projects and structures for purposes like irrigation, hydropower, domestic and industrial use. “ This is a huge step taken for the river Ganga today. We will do it for Ganga, Yamuna and other rivers also, all the rivers of the country will also say ‘me too’ now,” said cabinet minister for drinking water and sanitation Uma Bharti.

documents are recovered and handed over to the Forensic Auditors. Today the Bench further said that only the court appointed forensic auditors and their authorised representatives could enter the premises, which are to be sealed. Modifying yesterday’s order, the court said that the group promoter Anil Sharma and the two other directors — Shiv Priya and Ajay Kumar — of the real estate group will be released if the police were able to seal the properties by tonight. The court said if the sealing of the nine premises were not possible to be completed

by today, then the directors would be kept inside the police station and not kept in lock up as was done last night. The court asked them to be present in the court at 2 pm on Thursday for further directions. The bench had directed forensic audit to find out whether the money invested by the homebuyers were diverted for some other purposes. The bench had summoned the directors to seek information regarding the documents to be produced. The bench while ordering the arrest told them “We don’t know if it will take one day or one month.

Madhya Pradesh polls: Illegal infiltrators took away jobs of our youths, says Amit Shah

Bhopal : BJP president Amit Shah on Tuesday said that “illegal infiltrators” took away jobs of youths in the country, and alleged that Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and other opposition parties had opposed the National Register of Citizens (NRC) when 40 lakh such settlers were identified under the exercise. The BJP governments will “drive each and every infiltrator out of the country” after winning elections in 2018 and 2019, Shah said. Calling Rahul “Shaikh Chilli” (a simpleton), Shah said he should “stop

daydreaming” about forming a government in Madhya Pradesh, where the BJP has taken root. Shah was addressing a convention in Shivpuri, part of the erstwhile Scindia kingdom. He later took out a road show in Guna, which is represented by Congress campaign committee chief Jyotiraditya Scindia in the Lok Sabha. The BJP chief said that besides development, the most important aspect of the Narendra Modi government was creating an atmosphere of security.

Vijay Mallya fights UBS bid to foreclose on London home

Bloomberg : UBS Group AG is trying to foreclose on a 20.4 million-pound ($26.6 million) mortgage loan on former billionaire Vijay Mallya’s London house, which overlooks the capital’s Regent’s Park. The bank is seeking possession of the property, which Mallya -- who’s battling extradition in a separate case -- used as a family home. It says Rose Capital Ventures, the company that took out the mortgage, hasn’t repaid it. Mallya, who is referred to as the “King of Good Times” in India, hoped to turn the site -- previously used as offices -- into a “beautiful palatial property”

that would be “very fancy,” UBS’ attorney Thomas Grant told a London court Monday. “At the end of the day we are simply saying you haven’t paid your mortgage loan, as per the term, therefore we seek a remedy given to us, which is possession,” Grant said. Rose is based in the British Virgin Islands and owned by a Mallya family trust, UBS’ London court filings say, attributing the information to Mallya. A UBS spokesman, and a lawyer representing Mallya and Rose Capital Ventures, declined to comment. It’s the latest in a series of London lawsuits that the 62-year-old Mallya is fighting.

The economics Nobel picks reflect our times

This year was the 50th time that the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in economic sciences in the memory of Alfred Nobel. The academy has done well to select research that is truly global in nature. The two American economists selected this time, Paul M. Romer and William D. Nordhaus, have “broadened the scope of economic analysis by designing the tools that are necessary to examine how the market economy has a long-term influence on nature and knowledge.” Nordhaus recognized that not only does the climate determine economic activity, it is also affected by it. And Romer showed the importance of ideas and knowledge in determining long-term economic growth. Both economists, in a sense, have studied spillovers, which in the absence of appropriate intervention can lead to suboptimal outcomes. For instance, carbon emission due to the burning of fossil fuel in any part of the planet plays a role in climate change and has implications not only for today’s world but also for the future. Similarly, technological progress in one part of the world can be used in other parts to improve production. In the 1980s, Romer started working on endogenous growth theory, where technological development was not exogenous, as was then assumed in growth models. He observed the wide growth difference among countries. Though some of the lower income countries were growing rapidly, others were not. Growth models at that time—like that of Robert Solow, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1987—could not explain the difference in growth. For example, in a 1994 paper, published in the Journal of Economic Perspectives, Romer said that he “…cited the failure of cross-country convergence to motivate models of growth that drop the two central assumptions of the neoclassical model: that technological change is exogenous and that the same technological opportunities are available in all countries of the world”. He showed how endogenous technological change and ideas shape growth outcomes and argued that growth driven by ideas does not experience diminishing returns. However, the market of ideas doesn’t work by itself and needs intervention. It is probable that the market will not adequately reward the creator of a new idea and firms need some monopoly power. Romer also showed that markets tend to not adequately provide for research and development. Therefore, it is important for the state to support research and make patent laws that strike the right balance between the developer and users.

It’s difficult being a woman in India: Soha

As more and more people share their personal experiences, actor Soha Ali Khan calls it a welcome change. New Delhi : The #MeToo movement is making headlines for all the right reasons, with seeminglyforgotten horrorstories surfacing after decades. As more and more people share their personal experiences, actor Soha Ali Khan calls it a welcome change. “It’s wonderful that women are speaking out. Sometimes, it is difficult being a woman in a country like India. We go through a lot on a daily basis. Sometimes, we

just accept that we will be harassed regularly, whether that’s on a train or in the film industry,” Soha says. She adds, “It takes a lot of courage to stand up and tell your story, and women need to be supported when they do that. It is wonderful that the movement is being accepted. I don’t know what the consequences will be, if any. But I hope there will be some consequences. I stand in complete support of any woman who wants to tell her story.”

The actress wants everyone to give more strength and encouragement to women voicing their sexual harassment experiences.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan supports the #MeToo movement

New Delhi : Speaking out in support of the #MeToo movement, actress Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has said that the women talking about their experiences with sexual harassment should be given more strength and encouragement. “The #MeToo movement has gained momentum in present times, and the world has become smaller because of social media. It’s nice to see that members

of the media are becoming allied and propelling voices that need to be heard, giving them a platform. The law of the land will take over for justice to be served,” Ash says. She adds, “It wouldn’t be right to comment on individual cases, as they may be matters sub judice. But having said that, more blessings and strength to the voices that need support.”

Parineeti Chopra on #MeToo: Accused are worse than terrorists and murderers, should be jailed Priyanka Chopra flaunts engagement ring at Tiffany Blue Book collection launch

New Delhi : Priyanka Chopra on Tuesday attended the Tiffany & Co.’s Tiffany Blue Book collection launch in New York. Not only this, Priyanka Chopra was seen sharing a frame with famous American reality television personality Kim Kardashian West. Priyanka also hobnobbed with other celebrities.

New Delhi : Parineeti Chopra Wednesday said if people continue to ignore sexual harassment in the Hindi film industry, it would only encourage predators. In the onslaught of #MeToo, names such as Nana Patekar, Alok Nath, Vikas Bahl and Kailash Kher have cropped up with women accusing them of sexual harassment, rape and misconduct. Parineeti said if serial offenders kept getting work in the industry, it would send a wrong message. “The moment you know something, take an action. If you are quiet, you are allowing this to happen. When I know you are not the greatest man, why should I

continue making films with you, acting with you? Because then you’re enabling that person and he thinks ‘great, I’ve gotten away with this. Amazing! I can do it five more times,” the actor told PTI. “I am sure they (industry people) will not be working with those who have been named. “Unfortunately what has happened is, anybody who is aware that somebody was sexually offending, they continued to work with that guy. That’s where those people are wrong.” Parineeti said boycotting the sexual harassers was the “smallest step”. “According to me, these people need to be in jail.

Kiara bags a role in Batla House?

After bagging a role opposite Shahid Kapoor in the Hindi remake of Arjun Reddy, she has now landed her next big project. According to a source, Kiara will be seen playing John Abraham’s wife in the upcoming film Batla House. “Kiara Advani has been offered an interesting part in Batla House, and she likes the script. The film has been written by Ritesh Shah, and it will be helmed by director Nikkhil Advani. It is being produced by Bhushan Kumar, Nikkhil and John Abraham’s J.A. Entertainment.

and Telugu movies like “Anegan”, “Manasuku Nachindi” and “Raja Gadu”. Asked if she had faced the casting couch or harassment in her journey, Amyra said, “To be honest, I haven’t faced casting couch in the south or Bollywood. But yes, I have faced my share of harassment in both industries. I don’t have the guts to name them because they are powerful people — men and women who made sure I felt helpless.” She says one day she will “definitely call them out on it”. “But until I don’t feel safe and secure, I won’t point fingers. They know exactly who they are and what they have done.

Sushmita last played a cop in the 2003 film Samay, and she wants

this character to be very different from that. She’s also been approached with an offer by Mudassir Aziz. And even though Dulha Mil Gaya was a flop, the actress is keen on collaborating with him again.” Interestingly, Aishwarya Rai, Sushmita’s long-time rival, was recently offered the role of a policewoman from Uttar Pradesh by producer Shailesh R Singh, but the actress turned it down.

who plays an over-attached single mother in her upcoming film adds that she always looks at the bright side and chooses not to focus on the criticism that comes her way. “I choose to react to positivity, rather than negativity. In this age of social media, everybody has a phone and an opinion, so there will be criticism. You just have to take it with a pinch of salt,” Kajol says, adding, “You can’t let it go to your head, just as you can’t take your airport looks seriously. I think there has to be a certain degree of balance.”

India vs West Indies ODI squad: MS Dhoni’s cover, Virat Kohli’s workload key issues

Hyderabad : Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s poor batting form might force selectors to include the flamboyant Rishabh Pant when they pick the ODI squad for the limited-overs leg of the ongoing home series against the West Indies on Thursday. It is still not clear whether the squad will be announced for the first three games or the entire series, which comprises five ODIs and three T20 Internationals and starts on October 21. Skipper Virat Kohli’s presence may be another key issue even though it’s unlikely that he will be inclined to rest for the entire series. However, the primary bone of contention will be whether the selectors and the team management will at least agree on having a cover batsman for Dhoni, whose wicketkeeping remains sharp but batting form has been on

the slide. “We all know that Dhoni will play till the World Cup but there is no harm in grooming Pant, who could be a terrific No.6 or 7 batsman, who has the ability to finish games,” a senior BCCI official privy to selection matters told PTI. Since his debut Test hundred at the Oval followed by a stroke-filled 92 in Rajkot, calls for the 20-year-old’s inclusion have only grown louder. While Dinesh Karthik is already there, his consistency and inability to finish matches at crucial junctures will keep the team management worried. There are a few other permutations that the selectors might consider. Kedar Jadhav’s dodgy hamstring will rule him out of the limited-overs leg which opens up one potential middle-order batting slot.

The Chief Minister was speaking at the inaugural function of ‘Vibrant Navratri Mahotsav - 2018’ organized in Ahmedabad tonight. The function was also graced by Deputy Chief Minister Mr.

Nitinbhai Patel, Gujarat High Court’s Chief Justice Justice S. Subhash Reddy, Gujarat’s ministry that included cabinet

ministers Mr. Kaushikbhai Patel, Mr. Bhupendrasinh Chudasama, Mr. Saurabhbhai Patel, ambassadors of

various countries, member of parliament Dr. Kiritbhai Solanki, special invitees representing 40-countries from across the globe, Chief Principal Secretary Dr. J. N. Singh, other officials and large number of citizens. The Chief Minister further stated that ‘Navratri’ and ‘Kite’ festivals have become a brand image for Gujarat in the world. Tuber troubles: Attack on migrants in Gujarat: Panicky Alpesh softens stand as Cold storage offers rowdy Thakor Sena imperils Congress prospects in UP, Bihar cold comfort Deesa : After incurring heavy losses on his 1,200 sacks (each of 50 kg) of potato harvested in March 2017, Dineshbhai Mali sowed less area under the tuber in the following season early last-November. The 40-year-old’s crop this March was just 900 sacks, which he, like before, kept in a local cold store for selling at higher rates in the off-season. But the lower production has hardly helped. Out of the total 900 sacks, this farmer from Deesa in Banaskantha district of North Gujarat has managed to sell only

300 at a “reasonably profitable” average price of Rs 550 per sack (Rs 11/kg). And ahead of the next planting season — from end-October to mid-November around Diwali — he still has 600 sacks lying at the cold store. “The price received now would barely cover my rentals for all these months. Rather than lifting and trying to sell, it is better I simply gift those sacks to the cold store owner,” remarks Mali, who claims that his household is running only on the sale of milk from his four cows and two buffaloes.

Vadodara : Gujarat Congress MLA Alpesh Thakor has changed his tone on the Bihar-Uttar Pradesh migrant issue. He is now trying to strike a conciliatory note, almost saying they all are welcome in the state and claiming that thousands of those who left the state in the past few days didn’t flee under duress or under threat to life but have gone to their native places to celebrate Chhat Puja, which is over a month away. The sudden change in his public attitude is noteworthy. He is supposed to be the one who instigated his supporters on Gujarati versus Bihari and UPites after the most unfortunate incident of rape of a minor. The timing of Thakor’s change of heart is curious. It came after a severe crackdown by the police against those who were fanning hatred and violence against migrants and indulged in rioting at premises which

employed workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh. It also came after Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar and his Uttar Pradesh counterpart Yogi Adityanath took up the matter with Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani and accused the Congress of supporting the miscreants. Since Monday afternoon the three BJPNDA ruled states started acting in tandem in building right public perception and pinning Congress down over the issue. It is not difficult to understand what made Thakor reverse his position in a few days. Most of over 400 persons arrested by the Gujarat Police are from Thakor community, belonging to Thakor Sena patronised by Thakor. Some of those arrested are Congress workers. The arrests and the charges under which the miscreants were booked were stringent, which included rioting and dacoity.

international Donald Trump demands answers from Saudi ally about missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi

Washington : President Donald Trump said he has spoken with Saudi Arabia “at the highest level” about the disappearance of Jamal Khashoggi, a Saudi journalist and prominent critic of his country’s royal family, who was last seen entering the kingdom’s consulate in Istanbul. Trump, speaking to reporters Wednesday in the Oval Office, said he’s spoken “more than once” with the Saudis in recent days but didn’t provide details of the conversation. Trump said that Khashoggi’s fiancée had sent him a letter and may come to the White House soon. “I’m not happy about it,” Trump said of Khashoggi’s disappearance. When asked whether he’s demanding answers from the Saudis, Trump said, “yes we are. We are demanding everything.” “We want to see what’s going on there,” he said. “That’s a bad situation. Frankly, because it’s a reporter, you could say in many respects, it brings it to a level. It’s a very serious situation for us.” The New York Times reported Wednesday that Turkish officials believe Kashoggi was killed inside the consulate, at the orders of Saudi Arabia’s leadership.

Trump raises ethanol use in gasoline, appeases farmers ahead of elections

Washington : US President Donald Trump launched an effort on Tuesday to increase ethanol use in the nation’s gasoline pool, delivering a long-sought political victory to the country’s Farm Belt and angering oil refiners ahead of November’s congressional elections. Trump announced the lifting of a ban on summer sales of gasoline blended with 15 per cent ethanol, known as E15, at a closed-door meeting at the White House, Republican senators told reporters after the meeting. “My administration is protecting ethanol. … Today we are unleashing the power of E15 to fuel our country all year long,” Trump told a cheering crowd of supporters at a rally in Council Bluffs, Iowa. The announcement capped a months-long effort by the White House to thread the needle between rival corn and oil industry interests, by boosting ethanol demand while also cutting costs for refiners. In the end, Trump is moving ahead without the support of the oil refining industry, which wanted more in return for agreeing to lift the summer ban. The move is also aimed at helping the political fortunes of Republican candidates in the Midwest saddled with a tough farm economy and the imposition of import tariffs by Trump and China.

Taiwan leader calls on China to not be ‘source of conflict’

Pratt & Whitney glitches: IndiGo flight to Ahmedabad returns after loss of oil pressure

Ahmedabad : In what has been preliminarily identified as a new problem in the Pratt & Whitney engine equipped Airbus A320neo aircraft, an IndiGo flight from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad returned back shortly after takeoff when pilots observed loss of oil pressure in the left engine. “On October 8, an IndiGo A320 aircraft (VT-IVB) operated flight 6E452 from Bengaluru to Ahmedabad returned back to Bengaluru. During the flight, the capitain observerd loss of indication of engine number 1 oil pressure. The pilot followed his procedures and landed back to Bengaluru. VT-IVB was withdrawn from service for

further checks at Bengaluru. Another aircraft was routed to operate this sector,” IndiGo said

in a statement. A senior official at the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) said

that the regulator had taken cognisance of the issue adding that as per the checklist, the pilot shut down the engine and landed back. The official also said that following the incident, the engine maker had recommended replacement of the engine that is expected to happen later this week. IndiGo has been facing issues due to the glitches with Pratt & Whitney engines for nearly two years now resulting in grounding of as many as 10 aircraft at one point last year. Currently, only one A320neo aircraft operated by the airline is grounded. According to sources, the aircraft was delivered to IndiGo only ten months ago.

Taipei : Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen called on China Wednesday not to be a “source of conflict” and pledged to boost the island’s defenses against Beijing’s military threats. In a National Day address, Tsai said the best way to defend Taiwan was to “make it indispensable and irreplaceable to the world,” while remaining nonconfrontational in its attitude toward China. “So once again, I am calling on the authorities in Beijing, as a responsible major power, to play a positive role in the region and the world, instead of being a source of conflict,” Tsai told an audience of government officials, members of the public and foreign dignitaries gathered in front of the Presidential Office Building in the center of the capital, Taipei. China cut off contact with Tsai’s government shortly after her inauguration in 2016 and has been ratcheting up diplomatic, economic and military pressure on Taiwan in a bid to compel her to agree to Beijing’s insistence that the selfgoverning island democracy is a part of China. China and Taiwan separated amid civil war in 1949 and China considers the island part of its territory to be taken control of by force if necessary.
