US President Donald Trump today praised India’s “astounding” growth after it opened its economy and also Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he has been working successfully to bring the vast country and its people together. Speaking at a gathering of CEOs on the sidelines of the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit at Da Nang in Vietnam, President Trump said that countries out-

side of the grouping were also making “great strides in this new chapter for the Indo-Pacific”. He pointed out that India was celebrating the 70th anniversary of its independence and highlighted that the country was a sovereign democracy with a population of 1.3 billion as well as the largest democracy in the world. “Since India opened its economy, it has achieved astounding growth and a new world of opportunities for

its expanding middle class,” President Trump said. “And Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi has been working to bring that vast country and all of its people as one. And he has been working at it very successfully indeed,” the US President said. PM Modi is leaving for the Philippines on Sunday to attend the India-ASEAN and East Asia summits. President Trump is also scheduled to attend the East Asia Summit, a key meeting between ASEAN and eight of its partners. The US president also used his speech at the APEC business meet to promote his vision for a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

Constitution bench

Agency | New Delhi

A five-judge bench of the Supreme Court on Friday junked an order by its two-judge bench directing that a five-judge Constitution bench hear case regarding the judges bribery scandal. Rejecting the earlier order, the bench said the CJI alone has power to decide what bench should hear the matter. The twojudge bench had directed the five-judge bench, comprising senior-most judges, to probe allegations of bribes being paid to allegedly influence verdicts in the top court.

A five-judge Constitution Bench headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra, which assembled urgently at 3 PM, said neither a two-judge, nor a three-judge bench can direct the CJI to constitute a specific bench. The bench, also comprising Justices R K Agrawal, Arun Mishra, Amitava Roy and A M Khanwilkar, annulled

yesterday’s order of the bench of Justices J Chelameswar and S Abdul Nazeer directing the constitution of a bench of five senior-most judges of the apex court to hear the matter. The larger bench took strong exception to the order passed by the twojudge bench and said no bench can take up a matter unless allocated by the CJI who “is the master of the court.” The CJI-headed bench said allocation of matters by the CJI was the principle of law, judicial discipline and the decorum of the court.

Gujarat polls: Campaigning dull as leaders busy with ticket exercise

It may be a lull before the approaching political storm in the high-stakes elections to the 14th Gujarat Vidhan Sabha in December this year. With senior leaders of both the ruling BJP and main Opposition Congress Party going in huddles for the onerous exercise of ticket distribution to winnable candidates, in a series of meetings being held in Gandhinagar and New Delhi, election campaigning has slowed down in the state over the last couple of days. The Election Commission had, on October 25, announced to hold polls to the 182 Assembly constituencies in Gujarat in two phases. In the first phase, votes will be polled on December 9 for 89 seats in the Saurashtra and South Gujarat regions while in the second phase, election will be held for the remaining 93 seats in Central and North Gujarat on December 14. A gazette notification for these phases will be issued on November 14 and 20, with last dates for filing of nominations being November 21 and 27, respectively. The last date for withdrawals will be November 24 and 30, respectively. Thus, with only four days left for the first phase gazette notification, the political parties have slowed down high-pitch campaigning as its senior leaders are busy in the ticket distribution exercise. But the parties are trying to keep up indirect campaigning via their fierce social media campaign, cartoons, hoardings etc and through foot soldiers. Both the major parties are, apparently, waiting for the other to declare its candidates first. In particular, the candidate-selection exercise in the Congress seems more complicated as it may have to accommodate conflicting interests represented by the Patidars, the OBCs, the Dalits and others. In particular, even after two ‘deadlines’ of November 3 and 7, given by Hardik Patel, the party has not been able to come out with a solution to the Patidars’ main demand of reservation and a stalemate on this issue continues. In Gandhinagar, the BJP’s Parliamentary Board, headed by party chief Amit Shah, began the exercise at Chief Minister Vijay Rupani’s residence on Friday. A final list is likely to be announced only after return of the party’s top campaigner, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is going to The Philippines on Sunday for three days to participate in the 25th India-ASEAN Summit and the East Asia Summit.

Hollywood-Bollywood Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to clash on Eid 2018 Agency | New Delhi

It’s been years since we saw Salman Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan in the same frame. But something on this front is set to happen soon. No, they aren’t doing any project together. Rather they are going to share the same box office weekend, if not screen next year. Come Eid 2018 and Bollywood will see one of the year’s biggest clashes – Race 3 and Fanney Khan. Just a day after Sal-

man Khan’s Race 3 went on floors on November 9, the makers of Aishwarya’s Fanney Khan have announced that their film will open on June 15, 2018, the Eid weekend which was locked for Race 3 much before. Trade analyst Girish Johar also confirmed the news over a tweet. “More #FanneyKhan to release on Eid 2018 #15June2018 @AnilKapoor #AishwaryaRaiBachchan @RajkummarRao @

Small-town shaadi films are the flavour of the season, but this one, despite the presence of a solid-as-ever Rajkummar Rao, stinks to high heaven. A film that this actor, who is in the midst of a deservedly fine run, cannot rescue isn’t worth rescuing. Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana is such a terribly confused take on a girl who dares to run away from a wedding in order to pursue her career ambitions that, by the end of it, it is difficult to tell which side of the gender and

ethical divide the film is really on. Debutante director Ratna Sinhaa wants to embrace everything in one go (anti-dowry, anti-corruption, pro-women’s empowerment). In the bargain, her film winds up being a sorry hodge-podge of inanities that do more disservice than justice to the causes that it espouses. Does Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana make a strong enough case against the evil of dowry? No. It actually appears to accept it as an unavoidable part of big fat Indian marriages.

Deepika Padukone Visits Tirumala Temple Agency | New Delhi

Deepika was accompanied by her filmmaker friend Farah Khan, director of her debut movie Om Shanti Om which celebrated 10 years on Thursday. The Bajirao Mastani actress looked pretty in a white chikan-

kari suit and accentuated her look with gold danglers while Farah was dressed casually in a purple suit. Neither Deepika, Farah nor their respective teams have shared pictures on social media, nor have they revealed why they were at the temple. However, a fan club, operating under the moniker ‘ranbir_deepika_shahid_priyanka,’ has shared a picture of the duo from Tirumala, which appears to be after the darshan.

Aramm movie review: This Hina Khan’s boyfriend Rocky has a strong message for her haters Nayanthara starrer is hard-hitting course it’s difficult to Aramm movie review: Nayanthara is convincing in the role of an idealistic IAS officer

Agency | Bengaluru

Director Gopi Nainar talking about the struggles he had to face to make Aramm, which released in theaters on Friday, told Indiaexpress.com that many producers turned him away as they thought this film was not “commercially viable.” Incidentally, the story at the heart of the film also deals with the sufferings of people in the pockets of rural India, who

are deemed “commercially inviable” by those in power. It is after Nayanthara agreed to do the film, Gopi managed to get the required funds to bring this hard-hitting film to the big screens. Similarly, he has used Nayanthara as a catalyst for change in the narration, while the main spotlight remains on the core issue the film is dealing with. In other words, for commercial reasons, Gopi has not pro-

vided more screen time or unnecessary dialogues for Nayanthara’s role, IAS officer Madhivadhani. While she remains in forefront of the action fast developing, the narration does not deviate from its straight path to meet the approval of her star status. It would have been such a shame had the director made compromises to add ‘masala’ in the script for ‘commercial reasons.’

Ravi Shastri Comes Out All Guns Blazing In MS Dhoni’s Support

All-rounder Axar Patel on Friday revealed his new ride Landrover Discovery through an Instagram story. The Discovery is a premium SUV that is priced between Rs 40.57 lakh and Rs 53.58 lakh. Axar’s Instagram story gave his fans a glimpse of his new car on Friday. The 23-year old had recently played for India in the ODI and T20I series against New Zealand. He claimed two wickets in the first T20I but failed to claim any in the second T20I in Delhi that

the hosts won by 53 runs. In the two ODI matches that he made an appearance in, Axar, who plays for Gujarat in domestic cricket, managed only 1 wicket. His performance against Australia in Nagpur ODI was comparatively better, helping India win by 7 wickets by claiming a hattrick. Axar, who had twisted his ankle before the series-opener in Chennai, was included in the Indian squad for the last two one-dayers of series against Australia and dropped Ravindra Jadeja.

Indian cricket team head coach Ravi Shastri came out in support of former captain MS Dhoni, describing him as the ‘ultimate team man’. Shastri’s defense of Dhoni comes after captain Virat Kohli echoed a similar sentiment after India’s 2-1 T20I series win over New Zealand earlier in the week. Shastri said some ‘jealous’ people wished to see

the end of Dhoni’s international career. “Looks like there are a lot of jealous people around, who just want Dhoni to have a couple of bad days.... There are a few people who are waiting to see the end of MS Dhoni. But great players like him decide their own future,” Shastri said. After India’s triumph over the Kiwis, former cricketers like VVS Laxman, Ajit Agarkar

and Aakash Chopra felt the team management needed to try out younger players in place of Dhoni in the T20 format. Shastri said the Indian team knew well aware of Dhoni’s worth and the criticism against the iconic wicketkeeper-batsman made no difference to them. “It (the criticism) doesn’t make a difference to me. In our mind we know where Dhoni stands within the team. He is an ultimate team man. He was a great leader and now an ultimate team man.” In a dig at some former cricketers and experts who have been critical of Dhoni of late and suggested he be dropped from the T20 side, he said.

Congress has accused the BJP of delaying the Winter Session of Parliament to avoid Opposition scrutiny on issues like GST and demonetisation ahead of the upcoming assembly election in Gujarat. Demonetisation and GST are issues that the government needs to answer for and the winter session should be called urgently,” said Randeep Surjewala, Congress Spokesperson. Constitutionally, it is binding on the government that difference between the two sessions of parliament should not exceed six months.

Art of Living hosts program to heal victims of Kashmir conflict Agency | New Delhi

A heart-felt exchange of emotions marked the Paigam-e-Mohabaat, a unique gathering of victims of Kashmir conflict hosted by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar at the Art of Living International Centre, Bengaluru on Friday. The program brought together family members of slain militants and victims of cross-firing from Kashmir

Claiming that the overall atmosphere in poll-bound Gujarat was against the ruling BJP, NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Thursday said people had started “accepting” Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi which was reflected in the “huge” crowds at his rallies. “A lot of fun was being made of Rahul Gandhi by those in power. But today, the reverse is happening. People are accepting him now and huge crowds can be seen at his rallies,” Pawar told reporters in Mumbai. Gandhi has been spearheading an aggressive campaign in prime minister Narendra Modi’s home state Gujarat, where Assembly polls will be held next month.

The Congress has been out of power in the state for over two decades. The veteran politician said the overall atmosphere in Gujarat is against the BJP, but refused to hazard a guess on the poll outcome. “The overall atmosphere is against the BJP, but money power and government at the Centre can make anything possible. Hence, the political scenario there cannot be predicted before elections,” he said. Pawar said the NCP will contest a limited number of seats in Gujarat for which talks were on with the Congress. “We will team up with anybody who is against the BJP across the country,” he said. Pawar, the wily Maratha politician, said it was not right for the Shiv Sena

to attack the BJP-led governments. The Sena is a constituent of the ruling alliances led by the BJP both at the Centre and in Ma-

The background is reminiscent of a famous televised quiz show with the lure of a prize money of Rs 7 crore beyond the final hurdle. This viral WhatsApp message in Gujarati wasn’t churned out by the well-oiled machinery of a major political party but by a group of young Patidar men in the cramped Bapunagar neighbourhood of Ahmedabad. My house was ransacked after the August 25 Patidar rally demanding OBC reservation benefits. Since then I have never missed a chance to take a dig at the BJP,” he says.
