Short News Patients worried about treatment as Delhi govt cancels Max hospital’s licence

New Delhi: A day after the Delhi government cancelled the licence of Max Healthcare at Shalimar Bagh in Delhi, relatives of the patients, who are currently admitted in the hospital, expressed concern regarding further medical treatment. While few of the relatives of the patients claimed the hospital had always given them the best treatment for free, others were concerned about the consequences that shutting of the hospital would lead to.“I have been coming here for the past five months for routine pregnancy tests of my sister-in-law for free. The gynaecologist wasn’t able to sense the heartbeats of the foetus so we came for test yesterday, but the OPD was locked. If the child dies, will the Delhi government take responsibility?” a patient’s relative told ANI.The incident of falsely declaring a newborn child dead and giving it away to the parents in a packet by the Max Healthcare had earlier created an uproar. This had led to the state government cancelling the licence of the hospital on Friday, through a four-page order. The father of the children had accused the hospital of deliberately declaring the baby dead and trying to get rid of him after he told the authorities he would not be able to pay Rs 1 lakh per day for their treatment.

Husband gave me ‘triple talaq’ for attending Modi’s rally, says UP woman Bareilly (UP): A woman from Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly has alleged that her husband gave her triple talaq because she attended a ‘Dhanyavad Rally’, a rally thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over his government’s plan to bring in legislation to ban instant triple talaq. Her husband, however, has said he divorced her over her extramarital affair. “My husband had an affair with his aunt and even had a son with her. He kept telling me he’ll give me a divorce. When I came back from rally he said the prime minister can’t do anything to harm him and gave me triple talaq. He had beaten me and my child and threw us out of the house,” said Fayra, the victim. “I didn’t give her triple talaq. She had an extramarital affair, so I divorced her. Her uncle keeps threatening me. She always wore jeans and things like that. I don’t want to keep my wife with me. This has nothing with to do with Modi ji’s rally”, said Danish, the husband. The couple reportedly had a love marriage in April 2016.

The PM also raised questions over an alleged appeal by former director general of the Pakistan Army Sardar Arshad Rafiq on making Congress leader Ahmed Patel the chief minister of Gujarat

Stepping up his attack on Mani Shankar Aiyar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday claimed the suspended Congress leader made the “neech aadmi” jibe at him after an alleged “secret meeting” between Pakistan officials and top leaders of the party.Addressing a rally at Palanpur in Banaskantha district, which shares its border with Pakistan, Modi alleged that the neighbouring country was interfering in the Gujarat elections and asked the Congress to come clean on the issue. “There were media reports on Saturday

about a meeting at Mani Shankar Aiyar’s house. It was attended by Pakistan’s high commissioner, Pakistan’s former foreign minister, India’s former vice-president (Hamid Ansari) and former PM Manmohan Singh. The meeting went on for three hours and the next day Aiyar calls Modi ‘neech’,” the PM said, while apologising for a sore throat.Modi said the issue was a serious and sensitive one and asked the Congress the reason for holding such a “secret meeting” during the Gujarat elections.

Pak interfering in Guj polls, its army ex-DG wants Ahmed Patel as CM: Modi

Palanpur (Gujarat): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday alleged Pakistan was interfering in Gujarat Assembly polls, and sought an explanation from the Congress over its top partymen who are said to have recently met leaders from the neighbouring country. Addressing a poll rally in Palanpur, the prime minister also raised questions over the alleged appeal by former director general of the Pakistan Army, Sardar Arshad Rafiq, that senior Congress leader Ahmed

Jagan Mohan Reddy tries to win over BCS, faults Naidu vows

KURNOOL: Claiming that Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu was cheating every community of the State with unfulfilled promises, YSRC chief Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy said that not even a single family is happy with the policies of TD over the last three and half years. Handing out a few iron boxes to washerman and a few scissors to barbars does not help improve the lot of backward community in the state, he quipped. He said that he would field

a candidate from the BC community in Anantapur district for MP position in

the next general elections. Addressing a BC conclave organised at Garladinne in

Singana-mala constituency as part of his Praja Sankalpa Yatra, Jagan said that at the time of 2014 elections, Mr Naidu had promised to include Kurumas and Rajakas into SC category and Boyas in ST category. But not one of the assurances was fulfilled. He said none of the castes were happy with TD rule. Reeling out the unfulfilled promises, Jagan said that extending interest free loans up to Rs 1 lakh and subsidies to weavers still remain as sour grapes to the beneficiaries.

Karnataka: Online SSLC registration deadline put off to December 20 Bengaluru: The Karnataka Secondary Education Examination Board (KSEEB) has extended the deadline for schools to carry out online registration of students for the SSLC exams in March 2018, to December 20 from December 10, not even half of the students have so far registered. Authorities of schools blame it on low server capacity and claim they are able to complete a handful of registrations per day.On Thursday evening, only 3.2 lakh students out of 8.5 lakhs, had their registration completed. KSEEB had to extend the deadline due to technical difficulties. “The server is down most of the time and we are able to update information of only 2-3 students per day. We have complained to the board with no avail,” said Chandrashekar, Principal, BET School in Chikkabanavara.D Shashi Kumar, General Secretary, Associated Managements of Private School In Karnataka (KAMS) said, “Schools across the state are facing data entry woes. We had pleaded several times to increase server capacity and other issues of member schools.” He added that the government should provide more resources to handle the volume of data. “We support the online procedure, but demand that officials resolve technical requirements on a war footing,” Kumar said.“This process requires huge server resources. The application at present can take about 8,000 users at a time.

CM Siddaramaiah challenges DV Sadananda Gowda to contest from Varuna

Varanasi (UP): Banaras Hindu University (BHU) on Saturday found itself in midst of controversy after questions on ‘Triple Talaq, Halala and Alauddin Khilji’ appeared in examination papers. The MA History paper had questions such as: What is Halala in Islam?; The rate of wheat fixed by Alauddin Khilji; Discuss about Teen Talaq and Halala as a social evil in Islam. The students alleged that the university administration was trying to impose a particular ideology through education.

Mysuru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah challenged Union minister D V Sadananda Gowda to contest from Varuna Assembly constituency during elections in 2018. “What connection does Mr Gowda have with Varuna? If he knows enough about Varuna, let him contest,” he told the media here on Saturday while reacting to the Union minister’s statement that the atmosphere was not conducive for the chief minister in

Varuna constituency. Mr Siddaramaiah said some BJP MLAs were in touch with him as they were keen to join the Congress and contest Assembly elections as its nominees. In case they join the ruling party, they would be given tickets while factoring in their chances of victory in polls, he added. A campaign of slurs and fears

Who would have thought that something Mani Shankar Aiyar said would become an issue, and perhaps THE issue, of a Gujarat election? I certainly did not, and nor do I think it is an issue of the size in Gujarat that people think outside it is. When I heard about the scandalous remark, I checked my Gujarati dictionary, which translates “neech” as “dusht”. The English translations are “wicked”, “vile” and “mean”. Should Mr Aiyar have used the word? No: political debate, and all debate must be civil. But does it have a meaning that links it to caste? No.The second thing is the issue of Narendra Modi’s caste. The Prime Minister belongs to a very successful community called Ghanchi. These are people who run the neighbourhood kirana stores, and also press oil and sell grain (and tea) from shops. The word Modi itself means an individual who runs the neighbourhood store, and it has the same meaning as the name Gandhi. The Ghanchi community is not seen as a backward caste and it became a backward class, or OBC, only in 1999 under Atal Behari Vajpayee. And so, for many Gujaratis, the word “neech” will not be an automatic link to caste abuse for the PM.These are the reasons that I thought that the issue was overblown and would not be particularly effective as a campaign weapon. Time will tell, though of course we will have no way of knowing specifically which issues led to a BJP win (and I expect the BJP to win, as I wrote in my previous column) and which were only hot air from the media. The one story, which I thought would be damaging when I heard about it, was the matter of the Somnath register. Subsequent reporting has shown that the story was not what it was made out to be, but certainly it would have interested many Gujaratis and they would have been concerned that Rahul Gandhi had chosen to be registered as a non-Hindu (which he hadn’t). But that story is now history and the media interest has moved on.Then there was the one about Mr Aiyar comparing Mr Gandhi’s ascension as Congress president to that of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb. He was apparently not quoted fully on the matter by many who subsequently commented on it, including me. But he should have known that anything that brought in Mr Gandhi and Aurangzeb would have been used by Mr Modi, as it was. How effective was this? Again, I do not think people decide whom to vote for one something like this but it gave the BJP the space to talk about the Congress rather than performance in a state it has ruled for two decades. Before that the BJP leaked a report about a hospital that Ahmed Patel was a trustee in, had an employee or a former employee, who had been named a terrorism charge. This was a bogus story in the sense that there was no link between Mr Patel and the man accused. It was pushed because the BJP usually profits from showing the Congress as being soft on terrorism, though the history and the data shows otherwise.

Zaira Wasim molested on flight: Mumbai police file FIR; Vistara orders probe Mumbai: The Mumbai police on Sunday registered an FIR against unknown person in connection with the Zaira Wasim alleged molestation incident. In the video, Zaira could be seen fighting her tears and saying, “This is not done; I am disturbed. Is this how you’re

going to take care of girls?” She said she had called out to the cabin crew for help but it was of no use. The National Commission of Women (NCW), the Delhi Commission of Women (DCW), the Ministry of Civil Aviation and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) have sought details from Air Vistara over the incident.

Simran faliure changed lot of things for me, admits Kangana Ranaut

Mumbai: Kangana Ranaut’s much publicised ‘Simran’ released earlier this year. The Hansal Mehta directed film received mixed reviews from the critics and the audiences alike, and it ultimately bombed at the box-office.Kangana Ranaut opened up about the results of Simran’s failure on her career. Kangana who was going to direct her directorial debut, Teju after the release of ‘Manikarnika’ has changed her plans. She revealed to a news channel, “Of course it was was the cards, but because Simran didn’t work a lot for things changed for me, unfortunately. So now I’m going to be working in the capacity of an actor. There is another thriller I’m doing and another inspirational story after that. So you still have to wait to test my directorial skills.”Speaking on ‘Teju’, Kangana had earlier said, “It is a children’s film, and I have a lot of ideas and excitement for it. But it will be a difficult project to pull off, and I am looking forward to it.”Kangana will be next seen in ‘Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi’, a period film directed by Krish Jagarlamudi and produced by Kamal Jain and Zee Studios. The highly anticipated biographical film is based on the life of the queen of the princely state of Jhansi, Rani Laxmibai and her war against the British East India Company during the Indian Rebellion of 1857.

Taking note of the incident, the airline have ordered a detailed investigation into the incident. In a statement, the airline also apologised, adding Zaira started yelling at the accused passenger only during the descent of the flight, due to which the cabin crew couldn’t move because it’s mandatory to have no movement during the final phase of the flight as seat belts are on.

Mumbai: Aamir Khan might have walked out of Rakesh Sharma biopic citing creative differences and now as per reports on DNA, Shah Rukh Khan is being considered for the role. A Bollywood insider earlier spoke on Aamir’s exit, “When Siddharth Roy Kapur launched his own production house, one project that he had announced, was based on the life of astronaut Rakesh Sharma and the shooting was to go on the floors only after ‘Thugs Of Hindostan’ was complete. It was a 2018 release. Aamir was approached to play Rakesh Sharma, in a conversation started with Siddharth way back in 2016, but the star is not doing the film anymore. They were developing the script but Aamir did not like the way it finally shaped up. Everybody knows that his script sense is brilliant so in that form, so if he does not like a script there has to be something wrong with it. And while he’s very fond of Siddharth, Aamir is not someone who will do a film if he’s not 100 percent convinced of it.

I don’t feel like I’m the victim of censorship, says Saif Ali Khan Mumbai: Saif Ali Khan’s black comedy ‘Kaalakandi’ was in the news for getting close to 70 cuts by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). Eventually, the makers had to take their movie to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) for a rewatch. However, Saif is unperturbed about it. “As far as Kaalakandi goes, I think the FCAT was great. They passed he movie with one cut, which was good,” he says. If reports are to be believed, the cuss words and lovemaking scenes happened to be the reason behind the ‘Kaalakandi’

It’s gone through a bit of red tape, but it’s worked out well. And so far, I don’t feel like I’m the victim of censorship, as such” The movie, directed by Akshat Verma, will also star Akshay Oberoi, Vijay Raaz, Kunaal Roy Kapur and Amyra Dastur, amongst others. Kaalakandi will release on January 12, 2018. If reports are to be believed, the cuss words and lovemaking scenes happened to be the reason behind the cuts.

Twitter roast Rohit Sharma’s India as Suranga Lakmal stars in Dharamsala ODI

Dharamsala: Taking over the captaincy mantle in the absence of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma had a debut to forget as Team India ODI captain. After Sri Lanka skipper Thisara Perera opted to bowl in the first ODI at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, Rohit Sharma stated

it was a ‘good toss to lose’. However, the Indian batting order crumbled in no time, with the hosts failing to tackle the Lankan pacers on favourable seam conditions. Suranga Lakmal was at the forefront of the Lanka bowling attack as he ripped apart the top order, dismissing the likes of

Rohit, Dinesh Karthik and Manish Pandey. Nuwan Pradeep also joined the party by getting rid of Shreyas Iyer and Hardik Pandya. India fans were not pleased with the lack of determination shown by the Men in Blue and brutally trolled the team on Twitter for their shambolic batting display.

Virat Kohli will have to keep his focus alive Speculation about Virat Kohli getting married, this week or the next, has had newsrooms across the country in a tizzy. That the Indian captain decided to skip the limited overs series’s against Sri Lanka only fanned the curiosity further. But even as he takes time out — whether to get married or relax after a hectic playing schedule — Kohli will have to keep his focus alive to the onerous task that awaits him in South Africa, the first of three major teams India face

in 2018.The tour of England comes mid-year and then a trip Down Under before 2018 winds down. India’s record away from the sub-continent remains rather dismal. This puts India —currently undefeated in nine consecutive series —under great scrutiny. On the personal front, Kohli is currently the only batsman in the world to average 50+ in ODIs, T20s and Tests. He is also top-ranked by ICC in the first two formats.

Mumbai: The Indian women’s cricket team captain Mithali Raj on Saturday recalled her journey to the top and revealed that as an Indian player she had travelled unreserved in a train. “There were a lot of struggles in my journey. Now we are under the BCCI, but that time (when women cricketers were not under the board), the normal basic facility which a sports person gets to play even (we did not get). As an India cricketer, I have travelled unreserved from Hyderabad to Delhi by train, as an India player,” Mithali remembered at a session of ‘We The Women’ initiative which was moderated by scribe Barkha Dutt. To which Dutt quipped, “That would never happen to a man”. “That’s what Rahul

Dravid said. He said he has never travelled in train as an India player, but I did. But those difficulties make us strong. As women we face so many challenges at an early stage, that when we mature and take up the challenges, we become so strong mentally, that we can do so many things, that we ourselves don’t believe that we are capable of,” 35-year-old Jodhpur-born Mithali added. Mithali also recalled that her grandparents were not comfortable when she took up sports. Asked if people opposed her, she said “Very much, because I am from South India, my grandparents were not comfortable that I was playing a sport (cricket). My parents had to bear a

Mithali had led the Indian team to the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup held earlier this year. In the final, the team lost to England in a nail biting contest. After hiking cooking gas LPG price by Rs 76.5 in 19 installments in 17 months, national oil companies skipped the monthly revision in rates this month ahead of elections in Gujarat. State-owned Indian Oil Corp (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corp Ltd (BPCL) and Hindustan

Petroleum Corp Ltd (HPCL) have been since July last year raising price of LPG on 1st of every month with a view to eliminating government subsidies on the fuel by 2018. The oil companies however skipped the hike this month. “Yes it is true that we have not

The government last year had asked state-run oil firms to raise prices every month to eliminate all the subsidies by March 2018. Since the implementation of the policy of monthly increases from July last year, subsidised LPG rates have gone up by Rs 76.51 per cylinder. RBI takes to SMSes, missed-call helpline against frauds, scams Taking the fight to the arenaa used by fraudsters promising prize money from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the central bank has itself launched an SMS campaign and a ‘missed-call’ helpline to warn people against such scams.Typically, such fraudsters make calls or send SMSes and emails to gullible people promising lotteries and prize money from the Reserve Bank -- at times from the RBI Governor himself -- to trap them into sharing their banking account details or paying some ‘fees or charges’ to get the money. One such fraudulent SMS asks the recipient to deposit Rs 9,500 as “fund release

order fee charges” with a bank account -- which the fraudster presents as that of the RBI itself -- and provide bank account, Aadhaar and address details for getting an amount of over Rs 2 crore (denominated in the US dollar and other foreign currencies) as a portion of “funds recovered from the erstwhile British rulers”. While the RBI has been regularly issuing caution notices against such frauds, it has now taken to SMSes to spread public awareness against such frauds and has also set up a ‘missed call’ helpline that provides all necessary information to the callers, including about filing of complaints.

Youth Congress leader’s post gives Narendra Modi fresh ammo

M E H S A N A / PANCHMAHAL: After capitalizing on Congress veteran Mani Shankar Aiyar’s “neech” remark, Prime Minister Narendra Modi latched onto another indiscretion by another Congress campaigner Salman Nizami to strongly invoke “Gujarati asmita (Gujarati pride)” in his public speeches. “There is a Youth Congress leader Salman Nizami, who is campaigning for Congress in Gujarat. He wrote on Twitter about Rahulji’s father, grandmother. That is ok but he asks - Modi tell me who is your mother, who is your father. Such

language can’t even be used for enemies,” said the PM and exhorted the crowd to take revenge at the hustings for the insult inflicted by Congress leaders. BJP insiders claim Aiyar’s “neech” remark helped the party remind voters that the PM’s honour is at stake and Modi recalled how he has won laurels worldwide but Congress leaders continue making derogatory remarks about him. Modi recalled proPakistan slogans shared by Nizami on Twitter to suggest Congress has implicitly supported such comments and said, “Among the other

HC dismisses plea of candidate Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has dismissed a petition filed by an independent candidate from Gandhinagar (North) constituency, whose nomination was rejected after one of his subscribers turned out to be a voter from another constituency. Kamlesh Joshi, the candidate, rushed to the high court earlier this month after the returning officer rejected his candidature on November 28.For a candidate who is not from a recognized political party, for a valid nomination, his nomination papers are required to be subscribed by 10 persons from the constituency he is contesting from.Joshi requested the high court to direct election officials to reconsider his nomination after giving him an opportunity to rectify the mistake by replacing the subscriber. The court, however, refused to entertain the petition by citing various Supreme Court orders that once the election process begins, it must be allowed to be completed and any interference by the court should be rare and exceptional.Since the action of the returning officer was not wrong, the petitioner may approach a tribunal by way of filing an election petition, the court said while rejecting the petition.

Congress gave reservation lollipop to Muslims: Narendra Modi

Lunawada (Panchmahal): Breaking his silence on agitation by Patidars for reservation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday dubbed Congress’ promise of quota to the community as mere ‘lollipop’. Speaking in Lunawada, which has a sizeable 40% population of OBCs, Modi said Congress had made similar promises to Muslims, considered one of the most loyal votebanks of the party, in the past but failed to fulfill them. “I want to ask Congress party... you gave a lollipop to Muslims in all the states of India that you will give reservations to them. I want to ask my Muslim friends, have they given you reservation anywhere

in the country? Has this not proved to be a false promise? Now, they have made a similar promise to another community (Patidars) here (in Gujarat). From where will they provide reservation. Will they snatch it from OBCs, Adivasis (tribals), Dalits or Scheduled Castes?,” Modi asked. In his earlier campaign speeches, the Prime Minister had urged the

people not to be swayed by false promises. Modi said till December 14, Congress will spread all kinds of canards but people should not fall into their trap. Boss concentrate on work, just don’’t keep on talking like a cartoon script writer.they promised reservations n u promised ache din,u said u will lower the price of commodities etc inflation etc.

Gujarat Elections 2017: BJP on defensive mode in South Gujarat Unlike Saurashtra-Kutch, South Gujarat has very few high-profi le names in fray this Assembly election. But that does not undermine its importance it holds for both BJP and Congress. One must retain its supremacy here while the other must cash in on the golden opportunity to get back what it has lost and also spread its wings further. The signifi cance The 2012 election will be remembered for BJP’s landmark victory in South Gujarat where it walked away with 28 (80%) out of 35 seats. Of the total 16 seats in Surat district, it got 15, including all 12 city seats. Even the tribal seats, considered Congress bastion, voted for it. The grand old party managed to get six, all tribal, seats. BJP’s line of action The grand fi nale of

PM Narendra Modi’s campaigning for phase 1 election happened in Surat. It was preceded by big rallies in Navsari and Netrang in the past few days. Party president Amit Shah held a huge rally in Vyara, a seat BJP has never won in the history of Gujarat Assembly elections. The saffron party also roped in national leaders. Union minister Alphons Kannanthanam addressed rallies in Mandvi (ST) and

Nizar (ST) seats to woo tribals, many of whom are Christians. Manoj Tiwari campaigned in Olpad and Choryasi in Surat which have a signifi cant population of north Indians. However, BJP has avoided aggressive campaigning in seven Patidar-dominated seats of Surat, fearing a backlash. Now it is banking on tribal seats which, it believes, will vote for it because of its protribal work.

Istanbul police frequently crack down on leftist anti-government protests.

Jerusalem as capital: Istanbul police arrest pro-Palestine protestors

Istanbul: Turkish riot police Sunday detained a dozen activists at a protest in Istanbul denouncing Israel and the United States after Washington’s recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital. Holding banners such as “against imperialism, Zionism and their domestic partners”, the protesters gathered in

Kadikoy on the Asian side of Istanbul. Police moved in and detained around a dozen protesters, pinning some face down on the ground and wrenching the hands of others behind their backs, an AFP photographer said. Protests by religious conservative Turkish groups against the US move to recognise Jerusalem have

proceeded peacefully in Turkey in recent days. But Istanbul police frequently crack down on leftist anti-government protests. Pro-Palestinian protesters also held Muslim prayers outside the Hagia Sophia, a former Byzantine church that was turned into a mosque after the Ottoman conquest of Istanbul but is now a museum.
