Short News Urjit Patel’s resignation is sign of protest: Raghuram Rajan

New Delhi: Ex-RBI governor Raghuram Rajan on Monday said that resignation of Mr Patel as RBI governor should be seen as a statement of protest. “The act of resignation by a government servant or regulator is a note of protest. It is saying that the person can not stay on, given the kind of policies that are being thrust upon him,” said Rajan. He said that resignation is the only act that they have in their reservoir when faced with circumstances they cant deal with. “So in that sense it should be seen as a statement of protest and given that Dr Patel is an honourable civil servant and a regulator I think we need to understand what prompted this act and I don’t think Dr Patel is given to act lightly,” said Dr Rajan. He said that the government should take due note of it.

Bulandshahr violence: Army jawan, accused of killing cop, denied bail New Delhi : Army jawan Jeetendra Malik, who was arrested for his alleged involvement in the killing of police inspector Subodh Kumar Singh during the violence in Bulandshahr last week, has been denied bail, ANI reported. Fauji’s role in the alleged mob violence in Siyana village of Bulandshahr that killed inspector Singh and a civilian, Sumit, surfaced after a purported video showed him allegedly opening fire. On December 3, violence erupted in the UP village following the discovery of 25 cow carcasses. Cars were torched and policemen attacked by men alleging slaughter of cows and demanding immediate action. An SIT has been constituted to investigate the entire sequence of events leading to the SHO’s death.

On warpath with Centre, Urjit Patel quits RBI

Mumbai/New Delhi: RBI governor Urjit Patel on Monday resigned from his post, belying suggestions of an uncomfortable truce between the RBI and the Narendra Modi government over a host of issues. “On account of personal reasons, I have decided to step down from my current position effective immediately. It has been my privilege and honour to serve in the Reserve Bank of India in various capacities over the years,” Mr Patel said in his statement. Though Dr Patel cited personal reasons for his sudden departure

from Mint Road, analysts feel the resignation was caused due to the RBI losing its autonomy under an assertive Central government. After the economic slowdown caused by demonetisation

and GST rollout, the analysts claim the government has been trying to repair the economy by supporting MSMEs and bleeding banks. Since its finances were strained, the government sought the

RBI’s support by easing lending regulations and transferring over Rs 3 lakh crore capital. However, the RBI refused to play ball, forcing the government to enforce its will on the RBI through its members on the central bank’s board. While there was a strong speculation about Dr Patel’s resignation on the eve of RBI’s board meeting on November 19, the event went off without any fireworks. Both the sides had suggested that the meeting was cordial, and the decisions were taken on merit and not forced by the government.

Vijay Mallya extradition order: Opposition meet: Benefited during UPA, NDA brought Goal is to defeat BJP, him to book, says Arun Jaitley says Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday welcomed the decision of a UK court that ordered the extradition of embattled liquor baron Vijay Mallya. Hailing the decision, Jaitley said, “The offender who benefited during the UPA rule is being brought to the book by the NDA government.” Mallya is wanted in India on alleged fraud and money laundering charges amounting to an estimated Rs 9,000 crore. He has 14 days to file an appeal on the court’s order. “Great Day for India. No one who cheats India will go scot free.

The Judgement of UK’s Court is welcome. An offender benefited during the UPA. The NDA brings him to book,” Jaitley said in a tweet. In a big boost for India, Judge Emma Arbuthnot said there were substantial misrepresentations in Mallya’s characterizations of his financial dealings that gave weight to the Indian government’s extradition request, AP reported. Mallya, who owned the now defunct Kingfisher Airlines, has denied all wrongdoing and argued the case against him was politically motivated.

BJP government taking country on ‘wrong path’: Manmohan Singh

Mohali : Former prime minister Manmohan Singh alleged Monday the BJP-led central government was taking the country towards a “wrong path” and the nation’s freedom could be under threat due to its actions. He said the Congress had played an important role in strengthening the country’s freedom, but “during the last four and a half years, the BJP laid emphasis on things which could adversely affect India’s history”. “This can again endanger country’s freedom,” he said. Manmohan Singh was speaking at the re-launch ‘Navjivan’, a Hindi newspaper that was first launched in 1919 by Mahatma Gandhi but was closed several times during the British regime. “I want to appeal to the people that they should understand how the present government is taking the nation on a wrong path and there is a need to strongly fight against it,” he said, adding former prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru had once said that “Freedom is in peril, defend it with all its might.” He said Punjab had played a vital role in the fight for country’s freedom. The event was attended by Congress chief Rahul Gandhi and other party workers.

Westminster Magistrates’ Court judge ordered the extradition of Mallya today. The UK Home Secretary will have to sign Mallya’s extradition order within two months. However, Mallya’s defence team has a chance to appeal in higher courts in the UK against the verdict. London : A UK court Monday ordered the extradition of Vijay Mallya, wanted in India for alleged fraud and money laundering charges amounting to an estimated Rs 9,000 crores. Following is the chronology of the case and its origin: May 9, 2005: United Breweries Holdings Limited (UBHL) Chairman Vijay Mallya’s luxury airline – Kingfisher Airlines – starts commercial operations. 2013: A consortium of Indian banks led by State Bank of India approached United Breweries Holdings Ltd for the payback of a loan amounting to Rs 6,493 crore on behalf of Kingfisher Airlines. March 3, 2016: Mallya fled from India and took refuge in London. February 2017: India sent an extradition request to the UK.

April 18, 2017: Scotland Yard arrests Mallya on an extradition warrant after he surrenders at a central London police station. He is released on bail within hours after providing a bail bond worth 650,000 pounds. June 13, 2017: The first case management hearing takes place at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London in the extradition case. Mallya’s bail is extended until December 2017, for the start of the extradition trial. July 6, 2017: Mallya appears for a hearing in the case despite an exemption from appearance in court. September 14, 2017: Another case management hearing in the case when Mallya’s defence team informs the court of plans to depose six experts they intend to rely upon in their evidence.

New Delhi : A day before the winter session of Parliament begins, all opposition parties on Monday came together for a crucial meeting in the national capital. The meeting, however, had no attendance from Mulayam Singh Yadav’s Samajwadi Party and Mayawati’s Bahujan Samaj Party. Talking to media after the meeting concluded, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said there is a consensus among opposition parties that the assault on institutions such as the RBI must be stopped. “This is a process and it is bringing together everybody. I said in the room that voices in this room are voices of the opposition in the country; our goal is to defeat BJP, protect India’s constitution and our institutions,” said Gandhi. Interestingly, the ending of the opposition leaders meeting coincided with the resignation of RBI Governor Urjit Patel. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who attended the meeting, hit out at the Modi government over Patel’s resignation, saying it was a matter of “great shock”. “Institutions, from the CBI to the RBI, have become total disasters. This has never happened before. It is a matter of great shock. We must protest,” Banerjee said. She proposed that the meeting should continue on Tuesday and leaders of opposition parties should also meet President Ram Nath Kovind over Patel’s resignation. “The BJP is behaving like a dictator. There should be a campaign against this rule. Everybody has agreed to that,” she said.

AgustaWestland case: Christian Michel’s CBI custody extended by 5 days

New Delhi : The CBI custody of British national Christian Michel James, who is a key accused in the Rs 3,600 crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal case, was extended by five days by a Delhi court. He was produced before Special CBI Judge Arvind Kumar after his initial five-day CBI remand ended today. Michel was extradited by UAE authorities to the national capital last week. The court today extended his custody after the CBI alleged that he was not co-operating in the case and was evasive in his responses during interrogation. “We need to confront him with the LR (letters rogatory) that

have been received from five countries. Christian Michel did not cooperate with the Italian investigation in the case,” the investigating agency was quoted as saying by ANI. The CBI had sought a nine-day remain for custodial interrogation. The agency, however, agreed to provide consular access to the chopper deal case accused. “We have already been approached by British counsellors. We have allowed their plea of keeping their own counsel,” the CBI said. The court also directed Michel’s counsel to file a response to a CBI application, seeking the specimen of his handwriting and signature by tomorrow.

All sectoral indices on the BSE and NSE ended in the red, led by realty, banking, metal, pharma, pharma and financial stocks. Kotak Bank shares cracked over 6 per cent after the bank said it had moved the Bombay High Court against RBI’s decision with respect to the bank reducing promoter holding using preference shares.

Drawing that line in the sands of the internet

Defence analyst Abhijit Iyer Mitra, who was arrested for his alleged derogatory and objectionable comments on art and culture of Odisha, was finally released on bail on 7 December. Mitra had to spend 44 days in judicial custody— despite one of the most important aspects of the country’s criminal jurisprudence clearly stating that bail is the norm and jail the exception. No person deserves to be in jail for a joke, howsoever offensive. Mitra received massive online support even from the least expected quarters because of several reasons. As he is relatively well known and belongs to a certain class, people related to him more. Being privileged in terms of having access to resources both legal and monetary, and presumably with a much better awareness of his own rights, people were shocked at how someone like him, and by extension someone who was one of them, could be put behind bars, and that too for so long. While Mitra was eventually freed, a Mint piece published on the day of his release showed how the online space for expression is shrinking in the country across class and religion. The story tracked the lives of 10 men, out of more than 50 people across India who were arrested in 201718 for their social media posts. Of these, many were poor, illiterate, and first-time internet users; a substantial proportion was that of Muslims, and several didn’t have a lawyer, and were not even aware of the sections they were booked under. So, while the victims of social media are spread across the political, economic and religious spectrum, the recourse is different for different people. Unlike many countries, for example the US, which has organizations like the American Civil Liberties Union, India does not have an organized network to fight for the rights of the disadvantaged. The free legal aid that is offered is, in its present form, fraught with inefficiency mostly because the lawyers who get pulled in lack the monetary motivation to really fight the cases for their clients. So unless you manage to make a fuss in the right place at the right time and are connected well enough, your story gets lost in the larger scheme of things, and your destiny is put in the hands of a local thanedaar, who in all likelihood would be clueless about which section to arrest you under, and will hence just pick a vague provision of law and slap it on you. This is established by the fact that there are several instances when police across the country have charged people under Section 66A of the Information Technology Act, which was scrapped by the apex court way back in 2015, or slapped a sedition charge on a person with no real, serious case of advocacy of violence against the state.

‘Guilt-free Glamour’ aspect of the brand. Talking about the same, Sidharth said, “I first thought I had heard wrong when a makeup brand wanted to feature me in their campaign. I mean, it’s one thing to be a metrosexual man, but makeup? Really? Then I saw the premise, which is #TestedOnSID, and signed up as a willing guinea pig because I’d any day sign up for a product that is not tested on animals.

Business Urjit Patel’s resignation comes at a sensitive time, to dampen sentiments: DBS

Singapore: The immediate resignation of Reserve Bank of India Governor Urjit Patel comes at a sensitive time, when negotiations with the government to iron out differences on key regulatory aspects are ongoing, the Singapore banking group, DBS, said on Tuesday. “Timing of the Governor’s resignation and the already-cautious mood in the markets following yesterday’s exit polls, to be followed by today’s actual count for the state elections, will dampen sentiments,” Radhika Rao, economist at DBS Bank said. The bank

further noted that the uncertainty surrounding the Governor’s departure is likely to push 10year INR yields back above 7.6 per cent in a knee-jerk sell-off, while, the Indian rupee is likely to weaken past 72 per USD. Beyond sentiments, markets will seek clarity on Governor Patel’s successor, with the likelihood that one of the current Deputy Governors might take over the mantle. A search panel might be formed, with a former Finance Secretary and Finance Commission member, also reportedly in the running.

www.sunvillasamachar.com Role reversal at Adelaide: India hold nerve to win suspenseful contest, Australia lose breath close to finish line

India vs Australia: Historic first for India in Adelaide

Adelaide : No one commiserated with Nathan Lyon. As the Indian players celebrated their historic win — first time they had started an Australian tour with a win — Lyon was hunched on the ground, in as much as grief as regret. The day before, he’d exhorted his teammates: “It’s time to be heroes, to be remembered by our children and grandchildren.” There was no more an Australia superhero as Lyon in this Test — he bowled 60 overs, picked eight wickets, scored a feisty unconquered 38, and fluttered hopes of an unlikely Australian victory. Yet, he looked shattered. The man at the other end, the man whose wicket the Indians celebrated, Josh Hazlewood, kept staring at the ground, numb and speechless, wondering how close they

actually were to scripting what could have passed into Wisden all-time thrillers. A 31-run-defeat is not what one would actually consider a suspenseful contest, but unless one had watched the match, one wouldn’t realise how close it was. When Hazlewood walked

out to bat, Australia were still 64 runs adrift of surpassing India. In commentary, Shane Warne had already pulled his blazers on for the post-match engagements. In the slip cordon, Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya Rahane had begun to chuckle.

Never wanted to see Smith and David Warner go through such an ordeal, says Virat Kohli

Adelaide :India captain Virat Kohli extended sympathy towards the tainted duo of Steve Smith and David Warner for the public backlash they received in the wake of the ball-tampering scandal which occurred earlier this year. Admitting that he was sad to see the widespread criticism aimed at the two cricketers, Kohli maintained that he knew them well and never wanted to see them go through such a terrible ordeal. Smith and Warner

were banned for one year after being found guilty of ball-tampering during the Cape Town Test. Cricket Australia also handed a nine-month ban to Cameron Bancroft. Speaking to former Australian wicketkeeper Adam Gilchrist in an interview on Fox Cricket, Kohli said, “Well, it was sad to see. As big a thing as it became, you never want to see anyone go through that because I have known David and I have known Steve as well.”

international Pak continues to harbour terrorists, US should not give it even one dollar: Nikki Haley

New York : Pakistan continues to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill American soldiers, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has said, asserting that Washington should not blindly give Islamabad even a dollar until it steps up efforts to combat terrorism. Haley, the first Indian-American ever appointed to a Cabinet position in any US presidential administration, said the US did not need to give money to countries that wish harm to America, go behind its back and try and “stop us from doing things”. “…I think there should be a strategic view on which countries we partner with, which ones we count on to work with us on certain things, and move forward accordingly. I think we just blindly allow money to keep going without thinking that this is real leverage. We have to use it,” Haley told US magazine ‘The Atlantic’. “The one example I’ll give you is, look at Pakistan. Giving them over a billion dollars, and they continue to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill our soldiers —that’s never okay. We shouldn’t even give them a dollar until they correct it. Use the billion dollars. That’s not a small amount of change,” she said.

Rights groups, advocacy organisations oppose Nauert as America’s next envoy to UN

New York : Some rights and advocacy groups have opposed President Donald Trump’s decision to nominate chief State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert as America’s next envoy to UN, saying she is “unqualified” and lacks the foreign policy experience crucial for the post. Trump on Friday picked Nauert to succeed Indian-American Nikki Haley as US ambassador to the United Nations. The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the nation’s largest Muslim civil rights and advocacy organisation, called on the Trump administration to withdraw its nomination of Nauert for the position of UN ambassador. CAIR said Nauert promoted “Islamophobic smears” while employed as a Fox News anchor. It said, in 2013 she criticized special swim classes for a group of Somali-American girls, describing the classes as the “minority becoming the majority at one community pool. Sharia law is now changing everything.”
