Short News Pakistan PM-elect Imran Khan invites Navjot Singh Sidhu for swearing-in Chandigarh : Pakistan Tehreeke-Islam (PTI) chairman Imran Khan, who would be swearing in as Prime Minister of Pakistan on August 18, has personally invited Punjab Local Bodies Minister Navjot Singh Sidhu for the ceremony. Sidhu told the Indian Express that Khan called him up yesterday evening to invite him. His call was followed by an email by PTI chairman secretariat inviting Sidhu formally. The former cricketer said that he has sent the invite to Union Home Ministry and Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh. “I am going to attend the ceremony if there is no objection by the union government and Punjab CM,” said Sidhu. After the PTI party emerged victorious on July 26, winning 116 of the 270 seats, Khan stressed that the blame game needs to stop between India and Pakistan over Kashmir and Balochistan. In his address to Pakistan, he said: “If India takes one step towards us, we will take two steps toward them… but at least (we) need a start. Right now, it is one-sided where India is constantly just blaming us.”

Congress accuses Amit Shah of hiding liabilities in RS poll affidavit; BJP terms allegations ‘fake’ New Delhi: The Congress Saturday accused BJP chief Amit Shah of not declaring “his liabilities” in his Rajya Sabha election affidavit despite two plots of land owned by him being mortgaged by his son Jay for obtaining credit facility -charges strongly dismissed by the ruling party as “bogus and fake”.Giving a point-by-point rebuttal to the Congress’ allegations, BJP spokesperson Sambit Partra said Shah cannot show the liability of an independent entity belonging to his son as his own liability, asserting there would be hardly any politician of his stature who would pledge his properties for his or her son’s loan. Making the allegations against Shah at a press conference, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also said the party will approach the Election Commission over the issue and inform it that details given by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief in his election affidavit last year were “wrong”. Shah was elected to Rajya Sabha from Gujarat in August 2017.

Ahmedabad residents welcome demolition drive, which eases traffic snarls Ahmedabad : Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) expected resistance as it deputed teams to pull down illegal constructions obstructing traffic in the city’s eastern part on Thursday. It left nothing to chance and arranged a police cover. Far from any resistance, the teams were in for a surprise. The residents offered tea and welcomed the municipal staff out to do their job that would also rid them of the menace of frequent traffic jams. “We wanted to send across a message that the municipal staff need not arrive with SRP (state reserve police ) personnel. They are welcome here if, finally, they are helping bring an end to the menace

of the traffic jams,” said Jayaben Patel, a resident. Over 50,000 sqm or an area equal to almost 10 football fields has been freed of encroachments as part of an ongoing drive. Historical monuments like Teen Darwaja, Bhadra Fort, Dilli Darwaja, Lal Darwaja, which were instrumental in getting Ahmedabad India’s first Heritage City tag, have also been freed of encroachments. A

parallel awareness drive, too, has been going on in the financial capital of Gujarat. Most of the city’s 6.3 million residents appear to be happy. Residents launched a social media campaign when reports suggested that municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra and police commissioner AK Singh may be transferred in the wake of the anti-encroachment drive.

A political slugfest has erupted ever since the “complete draft” of the NRC excluded over 40 lakh people in Assam. Of the 3.29 crore people who had filled in applications for the NRC in 2015, 2.89 crore people found their names in the draft list.

Amit Shah takes on Mamata in Kolkata: Oppose us as much as you want but BJP will not stall NRC process New Delhi : In his first visit to West Bengal since the release of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) draft on July 30, BJP president Amit Shah on Saturday targeted Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for “keeping the Bangladeshi infiltrators” and urged the people of the state to uproot the incumbent Trinamool Congress government. “We want to ask Mamata Banerjee why is she protecting the Bangladeshi infiltrators. All that she has done is protest against the NRC. But NRC is the process to throw illegal migrants out. Shouldn’t Bangladeshi migrants be thrown out?” Shah questioned while addressing a public rally in central Kolkata. He alleged that the Bangladeshi infiltrators were a vote bank of the previous Communist government and now, they had become a vote bank of the TMC. Accusing

the CM and Congress chief Rahul Gandhi of indulging in “vote-bank politics”, Shah said, “Rahul Gandhi and Mamata di should clarify whether national security is important for them or vote bank. For the BJP, the country comes first.” He added: “You can oppose us as much as you want but we will not stall the process of NRC. Neither Mamata nor Rahul Gandhi can stop the BJP from doing it.”

Nirav Modi’s brother, sister summoned under fugitive Act; asked to appear on September 25 A special Fugitive Economic Offenders Act court in Mumbai on Saturday summoned fugitive diamond merchant Nirav Modi‘s brother Neeshal Modi and sister Purvi Modi as they have been “enumerated as an interested person” in an application made under the new Act by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against Nirav, according to PTI. Asking

them to appear before it on September 25 at 11 am, the court said their assets will be confiscated under the newly enacted Act aimed at curbing big-ticket economic crimes if they fail to come to the court. Nirav — who has been accused of cheating Punjab National Bank (PNB) to the tune of Rs 13,500 crore — has also been summoned under

PM Narendra Modi at IIT-B convocation: IIT stands for ‘India’s Instrument of Transformation’

Jaipur : Delivering the 56th convocation address at the IIT Bombay on Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said IIT doesn’t mean ‘Institute of Technology’ anymore, but ‘India’s Instrument of Transformation’. He added that the best ideas do not originate from government buildings or fancy offices, but from campuses like IIT-B and the minds of its youngsters. The Prime Minister said innovation and enterprise are the foundation stones for India’s development and appealed to students to “innovate in India, innovate for humanity”. He said development can be achieved through sustainable technology, which will, in turn, leads economic growth. “Innovations and enterprise are going to be the foundation stone for making India a developed economy. A long-

term sustainable technologyled economic growth is possible on this foundation,” PM Modi said. “Innovation is the buzz-word of the 21st century. Any society that does not innovate will stagnate. India is emerging as a hub for start-ups, and that shows the thirst for innovation,” PM Modi said. “We must make India the most attractive destination for innovation and enterprise.” He appealed to the graduates to innovate on mitigating climate change, ensuring better agricultural productivity, cleaner energy, water conservation, to combating malnutrition and effective waste management. The Prime Minister said that the college’s continuous efforts in the last six decade has resulted in it earning the tag of being an Institution of Eminence.

Defending Article 35-A not confined to region, religion anymore: Mehbooba Mufti Srinagar : Former chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Saturday said defending the special status of Jammu and Kashmir was not confined to a particular region or religion anymore as the people of the state have realised its importance and sanctity. She was referring to the reports of two of BJP MLAs from Jammu region coming out in support of Article 35-A, which is facing a legal challenge in the Supreme Court. “Heartening to know that two MLAs from BJP, Rajesh Gupta followed by Dr Gagan (Bhagat), have raised their voice in defence of Article 35A. of J-K is not confined to a region or religion anymore. People of the state have realised its importance & (and) sanctity,” Mehbooba wrote on Twitter. The former chief minister said while her government had fought the case legally in the Supreme Court, she “stood alone” in the political battle emphasising that any dilution of Article 35-A would set the state on fire. “Today I feel relieved that regardless of political views or affiliations, we are all on the same page as far as protecting the special status of J-K is concerned,” Mehbooba wrote. The Supreme Court had, on August 6, said that a three-judge

bench would decide whether the pleas challenging Article 35-A should be referred to a five-judge Constitution bench for examining the larger issue of alleged violation of the doctrine of basic structure of the Constitution. The bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A Khanwilkar had adjourned the crucial hearing on as many as five petitions “to the week commencing from August 27” on the grounds that they pertained to the challenge to a Constitutional scheme and could not be heard as the third judge, Justice D Y Chandrachud, was not present on that day.

the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act on the same date. The court of M S Azmi, also the special judge for Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) cases in Mumbai, issued three public notices in leading dailies on Saturday naming them. The ED had charged Neeshal and Purvi for indulging in money laundering and subsequently, escaping from India

as the alleged scam came to light. The notice against the duo show causes them to explain as to “why the properties mentioned in the application (filed by the ED earlier), in which you have pecuniary interest and/or otherwise, should not be confiscated under the said Ordinance (now the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act).”

Rahul Gandhi launches party campaign in Rajasthan, targets PM on Rafale again

Jaipur : Congress chief Rahul Gandhi today targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi again on the Rafale aircraft deal as he launched his party’s campaign for the assembly pols later this year in Rajasthan. Directly accusing Modi of corruption in the deal for the French fighter planes, he said the prime minister had favoured his businessman “friend” Anil Ambani by getting him the “contract”. The reference was to the business that foreign manufacturers are required to bring to Indian firms when a defence deal is signed with the government, under the country’s offset policy. Ambani has already rejected Rahul Gandhi’s allegations and emphasised that the government had no role in the Rafale-manufacturing French firm Dassault picking up his company as a local partner. India had signed an inter-governmental agreement with France in 2015 for the procurement of 36 Rafale planes. In his address to party workers at the Ramlila grounds here, Gandhi claimed that

the Rafale deal had snatched job opportunities from young Indians, including engineers, as the planes will be manufactured abroad. Gandhi said the price of the Rafale plane fixed now is about “three times” the amount agreed upon during the previous Congressled government. He said this “corruption” by Modi will become apparent over time. The Congress chief claimed that only 450 youths got employment in the country every day while China was creating

jobs for 50,000 people every 24 hours. “Our youths more honest, capable and stronger than the Chinese but it is a matter of shame that despite having almost equal population, they are getting fewer job opportunities,” he said. He questioned why Rs 2,30,000 crore could be “written off” as bad loans to 15 or 20 big industrialists, but the government could not help debtridden farmers. When farmers are unable to pay back their loans, they are called defaulters and are jailed.

Time for economic policy vigilance

The Indian economy is gaining momentum. The annual assessment by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), released on Wednesday, showed that it expects the Indian economy to grow at 7.3% in the current, and 7.5% in the next, fiscal. India is contributing 15% to global growth. Some of the recent structural reforms, such as the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) and Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), along with liberalization of foreign direct investment and improvement in the ease of doing business, will help improve economic activity. The IMF has also highlighted several external and internal risks. Although some of them are well known, they will require careful management. On the external front, for instance, there are risks such as high crude prices and the tightening of global financial conditions. India’s current account deficit widened to 1.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2017-18 and is expected to go up to 2.6% of GDP in the current year. The widening of the current account deficit is getting reflected in the depreciation of the rupee, which has fallen over 7% since the beginning of the year. External sector risks are getting amplified by the tightening of financial conditions in global markets. The US Federal Reserve is reducing the size of its balance sheet at a predetermined pace and is also raising policy rates. The Fed is expected to raise rates twice more this year. Further, higher bond issuance by the US government to fund its budget deficit is affecting dollar liquidity in global markets. The rising interest rate has also put pressure on capital flows. Indian markets witnessed capital outflows in excess of $11 billion between April and June. A slow and gradual weakening of the rupee is not particularly worrisome for India, as it was significantly overvalued in real terms and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has sufficient reserves to smoothen volatility in the currency market. The RBI has done well by pre-emptively hiking rates to anchor inflationary expectations, which will also help reduce volatility in the currency market. Gradual depreciation should help contain the current account deficit. The IMF also expects merchandise exports to pick up in the current year. However, faster-than-expected rate hikes by the Fed could escalate volatility in global financial markets and increase the risk for emerging market economies like India. Aside from current external risks, policymakers should also review the way India manages its currency so that a sharp real appreciation is avoided.

Shraddha Kapoor Sonakshi Sinha is ‘shocked’ no thinks criticism is good for actors to one’s offered her dance film yet! perform better

Mumbai: Actress Shraddha Kapoor, who has two films awaiting release Stree and Batti Gul Meter Chalu, and another two in the works Saaho and the Saina Nehwal biopic, says that she’s undeterred by the colossal failure of her last release, Haseena Parker. “I really felt that criticism of the film by the media is the reason why people didn’t go to watch Haseena Parker in theatres. More people watched it when it was released on television,” she says, adding that she’s appreciative of constructive criticism. “Criticism is good for all actors. It helps us perform better the next time. Success and failure, be it professional or personal, are part of life,” she says Talking

about her upcoming releases, she says, “I have the Sania biopic and a few other films in my kitty. And I am concentrating on improving myself with every film.” The lover of fresh and organic produce talks about what a blast she had while shooting for Batti Gul Meter Chalu. “We shot at a beautiful location in Uttarakhand, and I was surprised to see how fresh and wonderful the fruits and vegetables grown locally were. I wanted to bring home a suitcase full of vegetables! I remember, I ate almost 48 lychees in one day, they were lovely,” she says. The actress grows her own fruits and vegetables on a land little way away from Mumbai. She says that she loves to visit her kitchen garden whenever she can.

Mumbai: Sonakshi Sinha’s love for dance is apparent in her films as well as stage shows and the actor says she now wants to be a part of a full-fledged dance film. Be it “Saree ke fall sa”, “Gandi Baat” or “Party All Night” Sonakshi’s dance moves have been appreciated by the audience, so the actor finds it surprising that she hasn’t been offered any dance-based movie yet. “I would love to do a dance-based film. Isn’t it shocking no one has put me in a dance film yet? I would love to do that because I love dancing freely and that translates on screen,” Sonakshi told news agancy in an interview. While there’s some time for a dance film to happen, the actor has her plate full with films like “Happy Phirr Bhag Jayegi”, “Kalank” and “Dabangg 3”. While “Kalank” will mark her first collaboration with Dharma Productions, “Dabangg 3” will reunite her with her first film team. The actor made her debut with “Dabangg” in 2010. When asked if her equation with superstar Salman Khan, her “Dabangg” costar and mentor, has changed over the last eight years, Sonakshi said, “Honestly no. The dynamic with Salman Khan hasn’t changed in the last few years, why will it change in the film. It’ll only get better. ‘Dabangg’ is a home ground, it’s a family I began with. “Just going back to them is always a pleasure.

Shahid Kapoor feels mainstream actors should do socially-relevant films Mumbai : Shahid Kapoor, who is awaiting the release of “Batti Gul Meter Chalu”, says it is important for mainstream actors to be a part of sociallyrelevant films so that the message reaches a wider audience. The actor said his last two films -- “Haider” and “Udta Punjab” -- were appreciated because they dealt with contemporary issues.“’Haider’ was about human rights, which is a massive issue in Kashmir and in North East states, then I did ‘Udta Punjab’, which was about the drug issue,” he told reporters

Priyanka, Nick share similar thoughts on Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2 gets away with gruesome violence having babies; singer confirms engagement? Mumbai: The official confirmation that Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas’ fans have been waiting for, of their engagement, is yet to come and is making their followers more and more impatient. But for now, the latter might have hinted or rather confirmed, perhaps accidentally, that they are engaged. So, Nick was congratulated on his ‘engagement’ by a fan recently and the singer said, “Thanks man”, according to a report in US Weekly. Well, he’s supposed to deny it if the exchange of rings didn’t happen or say, ‘No comments’ or not react at

all, but the actor-singer did none of that. Was it one of those moments when someone quickly asks or says something to you when you least expect it, and the truth accidentally comes out? And it could also be possible that Nick is thinking about starting a family as well and it could be soon. He told media in USA recently,

“(Having a family of my own) is the goal. It’s definitely something that I hope will happen. I am not sure of the exact timeline. But, I need to give my nieces cousins at some point.” He added, “The best part about being an uncle is that it’s like training wheels. You get to spend time with these young people and have some responsibility,

which is nice.” Nick’s quote reminded us of Priyanka’s views about marriage and kids, and it is quite similar. “Marriage and kids are a big goal for me. I’m a big believer in the institution of marriage and in the family, and in kids, I want to have a lot of them, if God allows. The only problem is, I don’t know who I’ll do it with,” The ‘Desi Girl’ had told an international magazine. This interview came out in February, and considering the two have started dating only recently, has she got her answer then? Previously too, the actress had said she wanted to have a cricket team of kids.

New Delhi : Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroopam 2 has miraculously escaped censorial scrutiny. The film has scenes of torture and brutality that would have normally raised the heckles of the censor board. This film with graphic violence has gotten away with a ‘UA’ certification with no cuts whereas the same film has been given a ‘15’ certification in Britain with the explanation that the film contains ‘strong bloody violence’. Has our Indian censor board become more liberal than its British counterpart? Incidentally, the CBFC chairperson Prasoon Joshi has written the lyrics for the Hindi version of Vishwaroopam 2.

The film has a stronger ensemble cast including Freida Pinto, Manoj Bajpayee, Rajkummar Rao, Richa Chadha, Anupam Kher, Adil Hussain, Sai

Tamhankar, Sunny Pawar, Demi Moore, Mark Duplass, Noorani is introducing Mrunal Thakur as the lead character, as well as Riya Sisodiya. Director Tabrez Noorani says, “It’s exciting and such a privilege to bring Love Sonia to the Indian Film Festival Of Melbourne. We hope the movie resonates with audiences here as it has in London and I look forward to being able to interact with the audience here on the opening night.” Producer David Womark shares, “Both Tabrez and I are proud to have Love Sonia opening the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne.

of this film. One would think it (electricity) is a small issue but it is not for others. As actors if we can represent those issues,

it would be good as we have the opportunity to say something nice otherwise we will lose the chance. “We are not making a documentary film as it will never reach anywhere. So you have to make it entertaining and take mainstream actors so you can reach out to wider audience,” Shahid told reporters at the trailer launch of the film. The film is being directed by Shree Narayan Singh, who also helmed Akshay Kumar starrer “Toilet Ek Prem Katha”. “The issue of electricity is there both in small and big cities.

Director Ram Kamal Mukherjee makes Bengali debut with Narendranath Mitra’s Abhinetri

New Delhi : Narendranath Mitra is popularly known for his soul-stirring short story ‘Mahanagar’, adapted by Satyajit Ray and ‘Ras’ adapted on screen for Hindi film ‘Saudagar’. While the first marked Jaya Bachchan’s Bengali debut, the second remains one of the most critically acclaimed films of Amitabh Bachchan. Almost after halfa-century, director Ram Kamal Mukherjee will bring back Narendranath Mitra’s work on screen with his Bengali directorial debut ‘Abhinoy.’ “Narendranath Mitra used to tell contemporary stories. I feel that Bengal is the storehouse of content, and we can never run short of stories,” says director Ram Kamal Mukherjee. The film will be co-directed by Abhra Chakraborty, and will be produced by Aritra Das, Shailendra Kumar and Sheik Nasim Akhtar. “While shooting for ‘Cakewalk’ in Kolkata, I felt that I should do a Bengali film. Incidentally, my second film ‘Seasons Greetings’ is also in Hindi. While working on the pre-production of ‘Season’s Greetings’, I came across this collection of short stories. That’s when I decided that I will adapt this story,” says Ram Kamal. Incidentally, he wrote the first draft of the film on a flight and when he landed he shared it with Abhra. “Ram Kamal da brought in a completely different perspective to this story,” says co-director Abhra Chakraborty. “I worked on the screenplay and dialogue, keeping the basic structure of the draft that he had written,” added Abhra.

Mumbai: Infighting has broken out in the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA) barely a month and a half after elections with the top two officials trading charges over decision making on a host of important issues. Rajat Sharma is the DDCA president and Vinod Tihara is his secretary. Some DDCA insiders are also predicting re-elections in conformation with the new BCCI constitution as per Supreme Court order. Tihara, in a letter to Sharma (circulated to media), has alleged that the DDCA president had been autocratic in his decision making, showing “disregard and disrespect” for his position as secretary. The president, on his part, has issued a

The press release, however, does not name the ‘elements’. “We would here like to appraise you that certain negative elements with vested interests in the DDCA are trying to spread lies about our executive committee and making futile efforts of showing rifts within the executive. However, we are happy to let you know that we are all together in this journey and determined to fulfil the promises that our president, Mr Rajat Sharma had made to you during elections,” the release issued by DDCA president’s office stated.

Protesting Congress Lawmaker Threatens To Drown Himself In River, Held RAJKOT: A Gujarat Congress legislator, on his way to take ‘jal samadhi’ in Bhadar river in Rajkotdistrict, was today detained along with seven other MLAs ofhis party, Patidar leader Hardik Patel and others at Bhukhi village in the district, police said.Congress legislator Lalit Vasoya, who represents Dhoraji assembly constituency, was proceeding to take ‘jal samadhi’ (suicide by drowning) in Bhadar river to protest against the textile dyeing units polluting it with untreated effluents. Seven other Congress MLAs, including Pratap Dudhat who represents Savarkundla assembly segment, Patidar quota stir spearhead Hardik Patel and others had gathered in support of Mr Vasoya at Bhukhi village. “Apart from Vasoya, seven other Congress MLAs, Hardik and around 12 others were detained. They had gathered in Bhukhi village in support of Vasoya, who was heading for ‘jalsamadhi’,” Jetpur Deputy Superintendent of Police J M Bharwad said. “They were released after Vasoya and others gave a written assurance that he will not take ‘jal samadhi’,” he added. Earlier this week, the MLA had

submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Governor OP Kohli threatening to take ‘jal samadhi’ today in case the government failed to act against untreated effluents from industrial units polluting Bhadar river and the reservoir. Lalit Vasoya had alleged that untreated toxic waste from textile dyeing units in Jetpur town was being released into Bhadar river which in turn was polluting the reservoir. The Bhadar-2 reservoir supplies drinking water to Dhoraji. Neither the Rajkot collector nor the officials of Gujarat Pollution Control Board have taken cognisance of this issue despite repeated reminders, he had claimed. Following their detention, Mr Vasoya and Hardik Patel alleged that they were offered money by certain people not to take the protest. “The government belongs to the industrialists. Industrialists are polluting the river by releasing chemicals into it. Before coming here, I was made an offer of Rs. 50 lakh by the middlemen of certain people,” he said. “Two days ago, Lalitbhai (Vasoya) was offered Rs. 1 crore,” Hardik told reporters. Making similar allegations, Mr Vasoya said there was a threat to

Gujarat: Congress, BJP spar over goat shed ahead of Bakr-Id Ahmedabad : A temporary structure built to house goats for sale ahead of Bakr-Id has become a flashpoint between the Congress and BJP with the latter demanding removal of the structure. Local Congress corporators have opposed the BJP’s demand, saying it would be removed after Eid. For the last six years, goat traders from Maharashtra and Rajasthan have been coming to Surat to sell goats on the eve of Bakr-Id. The traders halt at Omnagar society, where over 400 Muslim families live. The society’s residents allow the traders to tie their goats and sell it to people in the common open plot of society. However, near the common open plot there is another plot owned by Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) which has also been covered to accommodate the goats.

To protect the goats from the rain, the traders with permission of the society president Kamruddin Qureshi had built the structure with bamboos and covered with a tin shed. BJP councillor of Dumbhal area Vijay Chaumal wrote a letter to Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and the municipal commissioner on Friday, accusing Muslims of having “illegally encroached upon the SMC’s plot”. Congress councillor of the neighbouring area Aslam Cyclewala also wrote a letter on Friday to Rupani seeking his intervention. His letter said that “since the last six years the traders of Maharashtra and Rajasthan have been coming to Surat to sell their goats to the people of Surat and the animals are purchased by Muslims of Surat for qurbani (sacrifice).

Gujarat’s Bitcoin Scam Raises Questions on Fraud, Demonetisation and Cryptocurrency

Ahmedabad : In what could become a big embarrassment for Bharatiya Janata Party in Gujarat and beyond ahead of next year’s general elections, the Gujarat Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has unearthed an alleged scam involving senior politicians in the state, including some from the BJP, to hide black money in cryptocurrencies following demonetisation announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in November 2016. Surat, the heart of India’s diamond business, was the epicentre of the alleged scam. A Bloomberg investigation into the scam this week notes that in the aftermath of demonetisation in November 2016, over Rs 4,500 crore was moved to Surat for parking in various assets including cryptocurrencies. The scam started unfolding after the CID was asked to investigate a complaint made by one of the accomplices Shailesh Bhatt, a property dealer, that he had been kidnapped by a group of policemen and asked to pay 200 bitcoin ( worth $1.8 million at the time) as ransom. Charges have been pressed against eight policemen and they have been suspended while the trial is underway. The abduction was allegedly done by Bhatt’s associate, Kirit Paladiya, and masterminded by Paladiya’s uncle Nalin Kotadiya, a former BJP legislator, according to Ashish Bhatia, the lead CID investigator. Bhatt too was arrested later as CID investigation threw up

incriminating evidence against him. Paladiya is now in jail on charges of abduction and extortion. Both Bhatt and Kotadiya are absconding, according to police. Kotadiya denied wrongdoing on a WhatsApp video in April and said he had informed authorities about the crypto scam, said Prashant Dayal, a senior Gujarat journalist who broke the story. Between late 2016 and early 2017, Bhatt invested in BitConnect, a cryptocurrency firm that was being promoted in Gujarat by a man called Satish Kumbhani, according to an interview given by Bhatia, the CID investigator. Kumbhani is one of the founders of BitConnect, which has allegedly defrauded individuals across the globe, according to Crypto Watchdogs, a group of six investors who have filed a US federal lawsuit against the company. Following demonetisation, the demand for cryptocurrency shot up as Indians were ready to pay 25% over the ongoing price of bitcoin. “After demonetisation, we were watching India,” a Bloomberg story has quoted Kiran Vaidya, a product manager at Toronto-based U.Cash and a blockchain adviser to Canadian banks, as saying. While the initial rush may have been black money, there were cases of people selling houses and cars in hopes of doubling their investment, CID’s Bhatia told Bloomberg. In January this year, the state of Texas filed a cease-and-desist order against BitConnect.

international Religion must obey Chinese law, paper says of mosque protest

Pyongyang : A newspaper of the ruling Communist Party said Saturday that no religion is above the law in China, urging officials to stay firm while dealing with a rare protest over the planned demolition of a massive mosque in the northwest. The Global Times said that local officials in the town of Weizhou in Ningxia, a region that’s home to many ethnic minority Hui Muslims, must act against what it described as an illegal expansion of a religious building. Thousands of Hui people gathered at the towering Grand Mosque on Thursday and Friday to prevent authorities from demolishing the structure, residents contacted by The Associated Press said. It was a rare, public pushback to the party’s efforts to rewrite how religions are practiced in the country. “People are in a lot of pain,” said Ma Sengming, a 72-year-old man who was at the protest from Thursday morning until Friday afternoon. “Many people were crying. We can’t understand why this is happening.” Ma said the group shouted “Protect faith in China!” and “Love the country, love the faith!” The protest comes as faith groups that were largely tolerated in the past have seen their freedoms shrink as the government seeks to “Sinicize” religions by making the faithful prioritize allegiance to the officially atheist Communist Party.

Nearly 400 killed due to earthquake in Indonesian island of Lombok

island : A series of earthquakes on the Indonesian island of Lombok has claimed at least 387 lives so far, injuring as many as 13,000 and displacing 387,000 people from their homes, informed the national disaster agency, reported AFP. According to AFP, a magnitude of 6.9 quake shook the island on Sunday collapsing several buildings and killing 17 people in its first tremor. “It’s predicted the death toll will continue to grow because there are still victims who are suspected of being buried by landslides and under rubble, and there are victims that have not been recorded and reported to posts,” national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. Nugroho said the emergency period has been extended to another 14 days as this would be helpful in dealing with the “many problems” that continue to exist on the field. Almost a week into the earthquake, hundreds of thousands of displaced people are still short of clean water, food and medicine, said the authorities.

British Muslim convert admits plotting ISIS attack in London

Outflow from Sardar Sarovar Dam reduced, Gujarat stares at water crisis, says official Ahmedabad : The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) reduced the outflow of water from the reservoir beginning Thursday even as it snapped illegal connections by farmers drawing water from the canal. Meanwhile, police have been deployed along the Kutch Branch Canal (KBC) and scores of pipelines installed by farmers to draw water from the canal have been removed as the SSNNL is trying to fill up the Tappar dam to meet drinking water requirements of the arid Kutch district. An SSNNL official told The Indian Express on Friday, “There is still no rainfall in the upper catchment area and to sustain the water that we have with us for a little longer, we have reduced the outflow of water into the main canal”. “If the situation continues this way with less rain in the neighbouring state and increasing demand in the rain deficit districts here in Gujarat, we are looking at the possibility of a drinking water crisis in the coming days. With the gap between the inflow and outflow of water in the dam widening, there is going to be an acute shortage of watersaid the

official on condition of anonymity. From 6,299 cusecs that flowed out against 3,320 cusecs inflow on Wednesday, the dam authorities reduced the outflow to 2,761 cusecs on Thursday when the inflow was 3,743 cusecs. On Friday, the level of water in the dam was 110.95 metres. The inflow in the dam on Friday was 2,331 cusecs and outflow was 3,106 cusecs. The live storage in the dam reservoir also fell from 35.36 million cubic metre on Thursday (MCM) to 33.31 MCM on Friday. As per an SSNNL calculation, if there is no rain in Madhya Pradesh or release of water from MP in a week, the dam will reach its minimum draw down level that is 110.64 metres. Earlier last month, in the meeting of Narmada Control Authority, Gujarat had demanded its due share of water from the river for four months, presuming a normal monsoon. Of Gujarat’s share of 9 MAF (million acre feet), (when 28 MAF of water is available in the basin), 1.06 MAF is for drinking and industrial purpose and 8.04 is for irrigation. As of today, 5.49 MAF of water is available in the entire Narmada

basin which means 1.765 MAF will be available for Gujarat. As far as the Kutch Branch Canal (KBC) is concerned, it was after orders from the state government, the SSNNL started discharging water in the KBC from August 4 and officers said that as of Friday, 30 million cubic feet (mcft) water had already been released the Tappar dam near Anjar in Kutch. “Our target is to release 500 mcft water in the dam to meet drinking water requirement for around a month. The KBC is alive and we want to complete the operation as early as possible. We are confident that we shall release the targeted amount of water within a week from now,” Mahesh Patel, chief engineer of Narmada Main Canal (NMC), told The Indian Express. The 357 kilometre-long KBC offtakes from NMC near Deodar in Banaskantha district and is designed to tail in Mandavi taluka of Kutch after cutting through Banaskantha district and Rapar, Bhuj, Bhachau, Gandhidham, Anjar and Mundra talukas of Kutch. The Tappar dam is located at around 240 km downstream the offtake point of the KBC.

London : A British Muslim convert has pleaded guilty to plotting an Islamic State-inspired terrorist attack on targets in London, including the city’s shopping hub of Oxford Street and Madame Tussauds wax museum. Lewis Ludlow admitted to swearing allegiance to Islamic State (ISIS) terror group and preparing to drive a van through major targets in the British capital at the Old Bailey court in London. “At its highest it is a plot to cause mass fatalities using a vehicle in Oxford Street, targeting the Disney store amongst other places, at its busiest time,” Prosecutor Mark Dawson told the court. Using a false name, the 26-year-old bought a mobile phone and wrote down his plans to carry out an attack in notes later found by counter-terrorism officers torn up in pieces in a bin. He picked out Oxford Street as an “ideal target” and wrote: “It is expected nearly 100 could be killed in the attack.” Ludlow, a postal worker with Royal Mail from Kent near London, planned an attack after being stopped by police at Heathrow Airport in February as he tried to board a flight to the Philippines. He was arrested by counter-terrorism police on April 18 and at an initial court appearance refused to stand, telling the chief magistrate he could only stand for Allah. “Ludlow had gone as far as writing out attack plans and conducting reconnaissance of potential targets. I have no doubt that the public will be much safer as a result of our actions,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Kath Barnes, head of counterterrorism policing in the southeast. He was due to go on trial later this year on two charges of preparing acts of terrorism and one of terror funding but he pleaded guilty to plotting an attack in the UK and funding ISIS abroad at the hearing on Friday.
