She listed names of all the people she had asked for help, including the Pope himself. Nobody has bothered to help her, The News Minute quotes from the letter. TRS begins power politics, declares war on Congress

Hyderabad: To retain power, the TRS has declared a war, politically and officially, against the main opposition Congress. The TRS is trying to weaken the Congress morally. In a big shock to the TPCC, the police arrested former Congress MLA, Turpu Jayaprakash Reddy, popularly known as Jagga Reddy, on charges of human trafficking. TPCC leaders expressed surprise at the arrest following the revoking of a one-and-half-decade-old case. At the same time, police also arrested Youth Congress leader Bala Kumar from Sircilla, which is the home constituency of the IT Minister K.T. Rama Rao. The charge against Bala Kumar is that of harassing girls in a Scheduled Tribe hostel, allegedly in an inebriated condition. Former deputy chief minister Damodar Raja Narasimha was arrested on Tuesday at Patancheru. The Congress leaders are put under house arrest in many places, when the caretaker Chief Minister or his ministers visit the districts. The TRS government wants to create panic among the Congress cadre, said Congress sources. On the political front, the TRS is using Operation Akarsh to cause defection of Congress leaders. Senior Congress leader and former Assembly speaker, K.R. Suresh Reddy joined the TRS recently.

ASHA, Anganwadi workers’ monthly allowance hiked

New Delhi: In a major social sector initiative timed just months before the Lok Sabha polls, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday rained sops for accredited social health activists (ASHA) and Anganwadi workers by announcing a hike in their monthly honorarium from October onwards. In addition to this, all ASHA workers will be brought under the coverage of various social security schemes and given free insurance cover under the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana and Prime Minister Suraksha Bima Yojana. The social health activists will not have to pay any premium for the insurance coverage and will get Rs 4 lakh in case of any untoward incident, the Prime Minister said during a video interaction with Asha, ANM (auxiliary nurse midwife) and Anganwadi workers from across the country.

He said the revised incentive would come into effect from October and it would reflect in their salaries from November onwards, which would be a Diwali gift for them. Those who drew an honorarium of Rs 3,000 will now receive Rs 4,500 and those who used to get Rs 2,200 will get Rs 3,500, he said. The honorarium of Anganwadi helpers will be hiked from Rs 1,500 to Rs 2,500, the Prime Minister said. These are routine

Will win despite Dadri mob lynching, award wapsi: Amit Shah in Rajasthan

Jaipur: Asking party workers to work hard to ensure victory in the assembly election three months later, BJP president Amit Shah has said that the outcome in Rajasthan will be trailer for the 2019 general elections. Amit Shah who was in Jaipur to take stock of poll preparation said that the results in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh will set the trend for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Addressing party workers in Shakti Kendra Sammelan during his day-long trip, Shah said, “The ‘mahagathbandhan’, or the grand alliance, that the opposition is talking about will have no impact except a little influence in Uttar Pradesh.” According to him Congress president Rahul Gandhi is having dream of Mungeri Lal. “The BJP is

very strong in Rajasthan. Party angad ke paav ki tarah jami hai, usko koi ukhad nahi sakta (The party is firm like Angad’s foot. It is difficult to root it out).” He said that in the land of Maharana Pratap and Chetak no one can defeat the BJP. He instructed party workers to go and ask people what they felt about having Congress president Rahul Gandhi as prime minister, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as external affairs minister and Samajwadi Party’s Mulayam Singh Yadav as defence minister. He also touched the sensitive leadership issue in Rajasthan for the Congress, asking why it has not declared CM candidate. “People also have right to ask about name of your leader.

incentives given by the Centre to Asha and Anganwadi workers. The state governments also give them separate incentives. Over 20 passengers were injured when the bus fell off ghat road of hill into a gorge in Telangana’s Jagtial district.

54 people, including 4 children, die as bus falls into valley in Telangana Hyderabad: At least 51 people were killed and more than 34 others injured when a state-owned Road Transport Corporation (RTC) bus fell off a ghat road of a hill into a gorge in Telangana’s Jagtial district on Tuesday. Among those dead, 4 were children, 32 women and 15 men. The Jagtial depot bus had 60 passengers and was proceeding from Shanivarapet village to Jagtial via Kondagattu ghat road and Muthyampet villages when it fell into the valley resulting in the accident. More than two dozen passengers died on the spot. While villagers quickly took up rescue works, Jagtial collector

Sharath and superintendent of police Sindhu Sharma rushed to the spot along with police forces. The injured were shifted to a government-run hospital in Jagtial. Those critically injured were shifted to hospitals in Karimnagar and Hyderabad. The bodies have been shifted to Jagtial Area Hospital pending

postmortem. “The incident happened between 11.45 am and noon. At least 15 people have died in the mishap...20 others were injured and they have been shifted to different hospitals,” Jagtial District Collector A Sharat, who is supervising the relief and rescue work, told news agency PTI over phone.

The poll panel has also asked AAP to send a representative to EC office within 20 days of notice being issued.

New Delhi: The Election Commission (EC) on Tuesday issued a notice to the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), seeking an explanation regarding discrepancies in the donation amounts filed by the party during the financial year 2014-15. The EC has also demanded an explanation as to why action should not be taken against the AAP for failing to comply with lawful directions and asked the party to send a representative to the EC office within 20 days of the notice being issued. “It is stated that the bank account of the AAP has recorded total credits of Rs 67.67 crore, including

Rs 64.44 crore from donations in excess of Rs 20,000. However, the party has disclosed total income of Rs 54.15 crore from donations in its audited accounts for the year. Therefore, it has been held by the Assessing Officer that Rs13.16 crore have not been accounted for by the party and these donations have been held to be from unknown sources,” the notice read. The EC report further stated that the party has taken accommodation entries from hawala operators to the tune of Rs 2 crore, which, the EC said, have been wrongly disclosed as voluntary donations by the AAP.

Rahul quick to hug PM Modi but runs a mile from income tax officer: Smriti Irani

New Delhi: Attacking Congress president Rahul Gandhi for challenging the IT department’s decision to reopen his 2011-12 tax assessments, Union minister Smriti Irani Tuesday said he was quick to hug Prime Minister Narendra Modi but would run a mile from an income tax officer. Rahul Gandhi needs to answer many questions, the minister said, a day after the Delhi High Court dismissed the pleas filed by him and his mother, UPA chief Sonia Gandhi, against the decision to reopen their tax assessments in connection with a case related to the National Herald newspaper. Their appeals in the court “reveal deep seated corruption in the hallowed halls of the Congress

party”, Smriti Irani said at a press conference in the BJP office. No Indian can defy an income tax notice but Rahul Gandhi runs miles from income tax officers, she said. “Why is it that Mr Rahul Gandhi, who is too quick to hug the prime minister, would run a mile when it comes to an Income Tax officer,” Smriti Irani asked, referring to the Congress president hugging PM Modi in the Lok Sabha during the no-confidence debate in July. Smriti Irani accused Rahul Gandhi of setting up a not-forprofit company, Young Indians, which then bought a commercial company, Associated Journals Ltd, and its debts worth Rs 90 crore for Rs 50 lakh. “Rahul

Gandhi set up a company in 2011, professing it will not indulge in profit-loss business. Young Indian bought Associated Journals, which is commercial,” she said, questioning the deal. Associated Journals Ltd, founded by Jawaharlal Nehru, publishes three newspapers, including the National Herald. After buying the loan of Associated Journals, Rahul Gandhi, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Sonia Gandhi become owners of a company, Smriti Irani claimed. The BJP alleges that the Gandhis used Congress funds to pay its debts even though the publisher has real estate assets worth thousands of crores.

Prime Minister that the floods in seven districts of the coastal and Malenadu region have not only affected crops but also infrastructure and human life. We have requested Rs 1,199 crore relief from the Centre.” Kumaraswamy said floods and landslides in the state have caused a loss of Rs 3,705.87 crore. He said his government has already released Rs 49 crore from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) and an additional amount of Rs 200 crore from the state fund to the effected districts towards immediate relief and rehabilitation work. The chief minister had recently submitted an interim proposal in this regard to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh, who had assured of sending a central team to ascertain the damage caused.

BJP threw off ‘Hindutva ladder’ after coming to power, says Shiv Sena

Mumbai: The Shiv Sena on Tuesday lashed out at the BJP, saying it came to power by climbing on the “Hindutva ladder” but threw it off once its purpose was met. Accusing the BJP of “stabbing Hindutva in the back” by breaking alliance with the Shiv Sena prior to the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, the Uddhav Thackeray-led party said not a single promise made to Hindus has been fulfilled till now. The Congress at least flattered Muslims for so many years, while the BJP, instead of “cajoling” Hindus.

Dealing with external sector vulnerabilities

The rupee’s steep decline makes for irresistible headlines. With the general election and a slew of state polls between now and May next year, it is as much a political issue as an economic one. After all, it affects everything from fuel prices—a perennial cause of concern for the common man—to financial markets. Monday neatly provided examples of both. While opposition parties were protesting against higher fuel prices, the rupee weakened further by about 1% in trade, which also led to a wider selloff, both in the bond and stock markets. But the heat and noise should not distract from what the current scenario tells us about the medium- and long-term picture. While the reasons for the rupee’s 13% depreciation against the dollar since the beginning of the year are well understood, it is perhaps the recent pace that has surprised the market. However, the weakness is likely to continue due to a variety of factors. For instance, the current account deficit (CAD) widened to 2.4% of gross domestic product in the April-June quarter. The wider emerging market sell-off is also affecting capital flows. Foreign portfolio investors have sold Indian assets worth over $8 billion so far this year, compared with a net purchase of over $30 billion last year. Further, the financial condition in global markets is expected to tighten. The pick-up in wages and prices in the US means that the Federal Reserve will continue to increase interest rates. Higher interest rates in the US will affect capital flows to emerging market economies and make things difficult for countries with higher CAD. India’s import bill has gone up largely due to higher crude oil prices. Falling exports from Iran and political problems in a large oil-producing country like Venezuela are pushing oil prices. There is a glimmer of perverse hope that the turmoil in several emerging market economies and the possibility of the burgeoning trade war getting more intense could restrict the upside. But there are no certainties here. All of this said, there is no reason for panic. In fact, the 36-currency export and trade-based real effective exchange rate index was at 115 in July, showing significant overvaluation. Some of it has now been corrected. Lower crude prices in the last few years resulted in overvaluation, which affected the tradable sector. Therefore, the ongoing depreciation will help revive activity and contain the CAD. But the recent pace of decline suggests that the adjustment needs careful management, as markets tend to overshoot in the short run. The flip side is that the depreciation in the rupee will have inflationary implications. Therefore, the chances of a rate hike in the October review of the monetary policy look very high now.

Los Angeles : Lady Gaga was moved to tears after she received a standing ovation among resounding applause to her Hollywood debut, A Star is Born. The film, which is being touted as an Oscar contender, has been directed by Bradley Cooper, who also co-stars with the singer. Gaga, 32, accompanied Cooper and other cast members at a Q&A panel at Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) Sunday. The singer lauded her cast members and Cooper, 43, for putting “every last drop of blood from their heart and their veins on set every single day,” according to The Hollywood Reporter. “I watched (Cooper) work tirelessly on this film, giving it everything, and you never stopped. Nobody here did,” she said. When Lukas Nelson, son of music icon Willie Nelson and co-writer of songs on the film, told her, “You just destroyed every single scene you were in”, Gaga broke into tears. Nelson’s praise made the audience to break into applause which instantly drew a standing ovation. Gaga was seen getting overwhelmed and gradually breaking into tears as she covered her face with her hands. She then mouthed “Please stop, thank you” as the audience began to cheer louder. The singer-actor has received critical acclaim for her performance as Ally, a music protege trying to make it big in showbiz to Cooper’s Jackson, a rocker struggling with alcoholism and drug addiction who falls in love with her.

The untitled project, to be helmed Stree box office collection Day 11: Rajkummar Rao film earns Rs 85.60 crore by director Sundar C, will also star New Delhi : Rajkummar Rao starrer horror comedy Stree has earned Rs 85.60 crore after 11 days of its box office run. The Amar Kaushik directorial, which also stars Shraddha Kapoor, is steadily but surely moving towards the Rs 100 crore club. And this is a surprise considering that horror-comedy is not a thoroughly explored and milked genre as far as Bollywood is concerned. However, Stree has taken everyone by surprise with its impressive numbers. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh shared the figures. He said, “#Stree maintains its strong pace on Day 11 [second Mon]… Biz was affected in some circuits due to bandh… [Week 2] Fri 4.39 cr, Sat 7.63 cr, Sun

Vivek Agnihotri forced to delete abusive tweet against Swara Bhasker

New Delhi : Vivek Agnihotri was forced to take down an abusive tweet against actor Swara Bhasker on Monday after microblogging site Twitter locked the filmmaker’s account for violating its rules. Bhasker had slammed Kerala MLA PC George for making objectionable remarks against the nun demanding the arrest of a bishop who allegedly raped her. “Absolutely shameful and disgusting!!!! Scum present across political spectrums and religious divides in India. Literally nauseating!” the actor tweeted with respect to George’s statement. Agnihotri replied, in a reference to the #MeToo movement against

sexual harassment and sexual assault, “Where is the placard – #MeTooProstituteNun?” Bhasker called out the director for “using the trauma of women who are rape survivors to slut shame and abuse in public a woman you don’t like”. “In the rare moments of sanity that may visit your brain – otherwise unhinged with hate – think about how low that is #scum,” her tweet continued. She also notified Twitter authorities against the abusive post and the microblogging site acknowledged her complaint through a message. “… We have reviewed the account you reported and have locked it because we found it to be in violation of the Twitter rules.

9.88 cr, Mon 3.31 cr. Total: 85.60 cr. India biz.”Not only has Stree performed well commercially, but it has managed to win over critics as well. The Indian Express’ film critic Shubhra Gupta gave a positive review to the movie and commended the cast’s performance. “There’s some fun to be had, especially in the shape of town ‘gyaanis’, played by the superbly droll Tripathi and the

always entertaining Raaz, and we get to witness a lot of mumbo jumbo about women with bloody ‘ulte paair’ and how the power of a female evil spirit resides in her ‘choti’. And that’s where the problem lies: if a film really wants to undermine these superstitious beliefs, it has to be able to treat these tropes with clear scorn. Stree, in many places, is muddled, not being able to make up its mind whether it wants us to cower or chortle, especially when it slips into Four Easy Ways To Tame A Bhootni And Deal With Misogyny mode. But still, Stree is enjoyable for the most part. I particularly liked its cheerfully hare-brained spirit, which the director manages to sustain.

Aishwarya Lekshmi to make her Tamil debut with Vishal’s film

Toronto : Pop star Lady Gaga says the idea of fame is “very unnatural” and being popular does not change the artiste as much as it changes the people around them. The 32-yearold singer, who has turned actor with A Star is Born, says director and co-star Bradley Cooper’s character is an example of fame’s adverse effects. “The truth is, people think we change. It’s not us that change, it’s everyone around us who changes. Fame is very unnatural. And we see that

Jack is struggling is this film. There’s substance abuse, there’s trauma. Ally also, for me, is struggling from depression at the beginning of the film, in not believing in herself,” Gaga said. The singer-actor was speaking at a press conference at the Toronto International Film Festival, Billboard reported. She urged the entertainment industry to intervene early to rescue artists struggling with substance abuse and other mental health issues as they pursue fame and fortune.

Vishal and Tamannah Bhatia.

Bengaluru : Malayalam actor Aishwarya Lekshmi has bagged her first Tamil film, which will be directed by hit filmmaker Sundar C. The untitled project will mark her debut in Tamil and also stars actors Vishal and Tamannah Bhatia in the lead roles. The film will go on floors next January and not before Sundar completes his project for Lyca Productions banner. It is the remake of Telugu blockbuster Attarintiki Daredi, which had superstar Pawan Kalayan

in the lead role. The Tamil version will have actor Simbu reprising the lead role and Megha Akash playing the female lead. The producers are yet to reveal the details of the remaining cast and crew. The filmmakers have plans to release the Tamil remake early next year. Sundar also has Sangamithra, a big budget period film in the pipeline. The film was announced last year at Cannes creating a huge hype.

Iulia will reportedly play the female lead, a Krishna-bhakt, in the ambitious project to be directed by Prem R. Soni.

Iulia Vantur to play a Krishna-bhakt

Mumbai : After much dilly-dallying Iulia Vantur has finally decided to sign her first Bollywood film. Producer Prernaa Arora of Studio 5 Elements confirms, “We are happy to have Iulia on board for Radhu Tu Kyu Gori Main Kyu Kaala. The

film will soon go on floors, the rest of the casting is underway.” Iulia will reportedly play the female lead, a Krishnabhakt, in the ambitious project to be directed by Prem R. Soni. The director and the crew will soon leave for Mathura to conduct a location

recce, and it’s believed that the debutante will accompany them and start preparing for her role. Until recently, it was thought that Iulia would be launched by alleged beau Salman Khan, but she seems to have chosen her own path.

Panga director dismisses reports of Kangana Ranaut signing non-interference clause New Delhi : Director Ashwiny Iyer Tiwari is collaborating with Kangana Ranaut for next film, Panga. The film is a story about families and the announcement of Panga had captured that spirit perfectly. But even before the film went on floors, there were reports which suggested that Ashwiny had made Kangana sign a non-interference clause. These rumours started after Kangana Ranaut turned director for her upcoming film Manikarnika. Kangana’s active participation in her films had earlier sparked rumours

that she was quite vocal on the sets of Simran and Rangoon. Now, Kangana’s sister Rangoli Chandel has tweeted a message which reads like it was written by Ashwiny Iyer Tiwary. The caption of Rangoli’s tweet reads, “All the people who are belittling and shaming a Young girl for taking difficult time hard on should learn lessons of humanity from a woman like@Ashwinyiyer …. Kangana deserves directors like her …. cheers to girls standing for girls ♥️♥️” A part of the message in the tweet reads, “For me Panga

is a story which I wanted to tell. A story very close to my heart and I could only see Kangana bringing life to the character. I request everyone not to be judgmental and together allow me to breathe the air of oneness like the support and love you have given me for my previous films. The news which has been floating around is false and baseless which should not be allowed to grow.” A few days ago, Kangana and Rangoli had hosted a lunch for the team of Panga to celebrate the start of a new journey.

La Liga applies for permission to play Girona v Barcelona in US

Barcelona : La Liga’s plans to play Girona’s fixture with champions Barcelona in Miami moved a step closer after the league’s organising body said on Tuesday they have asked for permission from the Spanish football federation to take the game abroad. “Barcelona, Girona and La Liga have requested the authorisation of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) to play Girona v Barcelona on 26 January at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami at 20.45 CET,” said a statement from the league. “The letter, signed by Josep Maria Bartomeu, Delfi Geli and Javier Tebas, presidents of Barcelona, Girona and La Liga respectively, was sent

on Monday night.” The statement added that the request was made after meetings with fan umbrella group Aficiones Unidas (Fans United), who have approved their plan to compensate Girona season ticket holders who will be deprived of a home game against Barca as a result. The request also follows a meeting held on Monday between representatives of La Liga and the Spanish footballer’s union (AFE). looming next year.” Miller added he would play domestic limited overs cricket this season for the Durbanbased Dolphins. “I will be available to play for the Dolphins in all limited-overs competitions and will give it my all to help them win trophies this season,” he added. The left-handed batsman has not been capped at test level, but CSA Chief Executive Thabang Moroe is hopeful that he will make himself available in first-class cricket in the future. “It is disappointing to lose David from our pool of potential test players,” Moroe said.

Tech Mahindra ex-employee accuses manager of discrimination against homosexuals Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said the company is investigating the matter.

New Delhi: IT company Tech Mahindra said Tuesday it would conduct a thorough probe after a former employee, just days after the Supreme Court decriminalising homosexuality, alleged harrasment and discrimination by his then team manager in 2015. Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra said the company is investigating the matter and “will ascertain the facts and see that the outcome is fair and just”. He assured that the group celebrates diversity at workplace and “fairness and dignity” of an individual are enshrined in core value of the company. “Our code of conduct is explicit on this subject ... Tech M is investigating these allegations, and appropriate action will follow,” Mahindra tweeted. Tech Mahindra,

which faced online criticism after the former employee went public with the charges against his former team leader, said in a separate tweet that it will undertake a “thorough investigation and take steps as necessary”. Terming the issue as “disturbing”, the company said that it was “completely against the ethos of our group that believes in uniqueness of every individual.” In a recent mail written to his previous manager after the SC’s landmark order, Gaurav Probir Pramanik cited a 2015 incident where the manager concerned, during an address in a training room, had allegedly made “sweeping generalisation and stereotyping of someone’s sexuality”. Pramanik accused the manager of making

“mocking judgements” on how his purported “effeminate” nature had affected his work. He further alleged that the manager made “a mockery out of a religious minority and a sexual minority” despite being a leader at a company that prides itself for inclusion and diversity. CP Gurnani, Managing Director and CEO of Tech Mahindra tweeted: “Gaurav, you have my personal assurance that this will be thoroughly investigated. We remain committed to supporting and promoting a diverse workforce at TechM”. On September 6, the apex court in a historic ruling had said that consensual gay sex is not a crime, while striking down a British era law that it said violates the right to equality.

If the demand is not met, then the Patidars will be on the road if Lalji Patel gives the government 72-hour ultimatum

reporters after meeting the quota stir spearhead, the senior Congress leader said that he advised Hardik to end his fast and adopt other means of protest to highlight the issues. “I told him that his life is very important for farmers, Patidars and youths of this country. I appealed to him to end his fast. Instead of hunger strike, he can explore other means, such as protests and foot march,” Rawat said.

Surat : In Surat, sh Surat, shops and business establishments in the Patidardominated areas like Punagam, Yogi chowk, Sarthana, remained shut on Monday. Many schools and colleges were also either closed or witnessed low attendance. In the Patidardominated areas, Congress municipal corporators came out on the roads with party workers to enforce

the bandh. Diamond factories, however, remained operational. Congress councillor from Punagam, Vijay Pansurya, said, “My ward is the most sensitive area, and here shopkeepers kept their shops closed in the afternoon as they voluntarily supported the bandh. These shopkeepers are from textile and embroidery, as they had been badly affected with the rise in the fuel prices.”

ECI orders removal of NOTA from Rajya Sabha, legislative council elections

AHMEDABAD: Implementing the Supreme Court order, the Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday withdrew the provision of None Of The Above (NOTA) from elections to Rajya Sabha and legislative council in states. The option will now be available to the public only during Lok Sabha and state assembly elections. The ECI in a notification ordered the Returning Officers for Rajya Sabha and legislative council elections to make sure that the column of NOTA is not published in the ballot papers. Earlier in August, the apex court ruled that the NOTA option cannot be made available in Rajya Sabha elections. A three-judge bench of CJI Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud observed that the NOTA option

is applicable only for direct elections and not indirect elections such as the Rajya Sabha polls. The decision was taken during the hearing over a petition filed by Gujarat Congress leader Shailesh Manubhai Parmar. During the hearing, Justice Chandrachud had pointed out that the rule in Upper House polls was an open ballot and the members by not transferring their excess vote to the next member would be violating the contract between parties. “If he doesn’t vote, party will expel him. But by making option of NOTA, you are legitimising his action,” added Justice Chandrachud. However, the EC had defended NOTA and said a member had the right not to vote and that would not be against the conduct of election rules or unconstitutional.

husband committed suicide by eating his neck. People’s mobilizations were gathered as soon as the decline was known. It is not known what caused the family to commit suicide.

Gujarat I-T makes largest cash seizure of Rs 19.3 cr

AHMEDABAD: During Income Tax raids on two Ahmedabad-based stock market operators on Tuesday, officials recovered the biggest ever cash haul in Gujarat of Rs 19.3 crore from one of them. Investigation officials simultaneously raided six premises — three residences and offices each — of Jignesh Shah and Sanjay Shah in two different cases and recovered the cash from residence of the former. The two were under scanner for filing ITRs not commensurate with their known sources of income. Both are being

investigated for illegal trading in penny stocks for beneficiaries who wanted to make huge profits or show large losses to take income tax exemptions. An I-T official said, “The cash was lying unconcealed in a bedroom cupboard at Jignesh Shah’s house. The cash seizure is the highest ever for the department in Gujarat. The last big haul was about Rs 6 crore. Such a big haul is extraordinary because so much of cash is never found lying around, as usually the unaccounted money is invested in land, jewellery or precious metals.”

international Afghanistan: Suicide attack in Nangarhar kills 22 near Pakistan border crossing

Kabul : A suicide bomber in Afghanistan killed at least 22 people in an attack on a protest gathering on the highway between the eastern city of Jalalabad and the main border crossing into neighbouring Pakistan, officials in Nangarhar province said on Tuesday. Another 23 people were wounded in the attack, the provincial governor’s spokesman Attaullah Khoghani said. Sohrab Qaderi, a member of the local provincial council, said at least 45 dead and wounded had been taken to local hospitals but added that the toll could rise.Local officials said the attack targeted a gathering to protest against a local militia commander and said hundreds of people were present when the blast occurred. Nangarhar province, on the border with Pakistan, has been one of the most volatile regions in Afghanistan this year, with a string of suicide bombings and attacks on the provincial capital Jalalabad. There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

First two US troops from North Korean remains will be identified soon: Officials

Pearl Harbor : The US military is close to identifying the first two American troops from the 55 boxes of human remains from the 1950-53 Korean War that were handed over by North Korea in July, U.S. officials leading the forensic analysis said on Monday. “The IDs will be made officially in the next couple of days,” said John Byrd, the director of scientific analysis at the U.S. Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency. The families of the dead would be notified first, he said. President Donald Trump’s administration has hailed the handover of the remains as evidence of the success of his summit with North Koran leader Kim Jong Un in June. The White House said on Monday it was looking at scheduling a second meeting. Critics, however, say the summit has so far failed to deliver on promised steps to get Kim to abandon his nuclear weapons program.

Special jetties to build for fruit, Gujarat HC sends former vegetable export at major ports: Union IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to minister Mansukh Mandaviya 10-day police custody

Ahmedabad : In order to ease the movement of fruits and vegetables from the ports of the country, the government has decided to build a special jetty in all the major ports, said Union minister for shipping, Mansukh Mandaviya on Tuesday. “There are nine nations in the Gulf (middle-east). They do not have fruits or vegetables. All they have is oil and money. These are currently being supplied by Europe and African countries…. We can send our cargo to the markets in the Gulf by the sea route in just three days from Mundra, Kandla and Pipavav ports. We have decided that we will develop a special jetty on the all the major ports under the Government

of India. From these jetties, farmers’ produce like fruits, vegetables, will be sent with relative ease,” said Mandaviya while speaking at an annual general meeting of Gujarat State Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd (Gujcomasol) held here. “The farmers cannot send these fruits and vegetables directly, but farmers’ cooperative bodies like Gujcomasol surely can. I have studied the Dubai market… We should open a consultancy office overseas who can tell us about the local demand and the same can be exported… This will help prevent situations where the farmer has to sell cabbage at Rs 2 per kilogram.

Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court Tuesday sent former IPS officer Sanjiv Bhatt to police custody till September 21 in a 1996 ‘drug planting’ case. Last week, a court at Palanpur in Gujarat had rejected the police’s plea seeking Bhatt’s remand. Justice R P Dholaria sent Bhatt along with coaccused and retired police inspector, I B Vyas, to the custody of CID (crime), which is probing the case, for 10 days as against the 15 days custody sought by the government. The court maintained that the custodial interrogation of the two accused is required as there appears a deep-rooted conspiracy behind the case. The police had told the high court on Monday that they need the custody of the sacked IPS officer to find the source of the

drugs, which his junior officers allegedly planted to frame a man. The police had moved the high court after a magistrate’s court at Palanpur in Banaskantha district rejected the application of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID-Crime), seeking custody of Bhatt and Vyas last week. In June, the high court had ordered the CID to investigate the case and file a report in three months. It is alleged that the Banaskantha police planted 1 kg opium in a hotel room to frame Sumersingh Rajpurohit, a lawyer from Pali in Rajasthan, in 1996. The state government had told the court that Bhatt and Vyas were required to be interrogated to find the source of opium that was allegedly planted and at whose behest.

United Nation : The cost of corruption is at least USD 2.6 trillion, or five per cent of the global GDP, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said and has urged the international community to work effectively against money laundering, tax evasion and illicit financial flows. According to the World Bank, businesses and individuals pay more than USD 1 trillion in bribes each year, the UN chief said during a session on tackling corruption for the sake of peace and international security Monday. “Corruption is present in all the countries, rich and poor, the North and the South, developed and developing. Numbers show the startling scope of the challenge,” Guterres said, citing the World Economic Forum estimates that corruption costs at least USD 2.6 trillion – or five per cent of the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP). US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley, holding the Presidency of the Security Council, chaired a council meeting on corruption and the undeniable role it plays in leading to and exacerbating violence and conflict. The US-organised thematic briefing marked the first time the Security Council held a meeting focused on corruption and its consequences for conflict around the world. People globally continue to express outrage over their corrupt leaders, noting how deeply corruption is embedded in societies, Guterres said, adding “they are rightly calling for political establishments to operate with transparency and accountability – or make way for those who will”. “I call on leaders everywhere to listen, to nurture a culture of integrity and to empower citizens to do their part at the grass roots,” the UN chief said. Guterres said corruption rots institutions, as officials enrich themselves or ignore criminality, deprives people of their rights and drives away foreign investment and breeds disillusion with government and governance – often at the root of political dysfunction and social disunity.
