Confusion over Rahul Gandhi’s meeting with HAL employees Bengaluru : Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s proposed meeting with retired and current employees of the Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), on Saturday, has created a flutter as it is not clear as to who is organising the event. The Congress says it was retired HAL employees who approached the party. State Congress president Dinesh Gundu Rao said Gandhi will hold a meeting with some retired HAL employees, who were allegedly pained by some Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders claiming that the state-owned aerospace and defence company was incapable to delivering on the Rafale deal. “There is a meeting with HAL employees on the contribution of HAL to the country. This is because our own defence minister and BJP leaders have said HAL lacks the capability to come through on the Rafale deal. We want to do this because HAL is an asset of the country and has contributed massively to the country’s defence sector,” he said.

Mumbai : The BSE Sensex slumped over 750 points to end at a six-month low and the Nifty ended below the 10,300 mark Thursday as global indices witnessed acrossthe-board losses after investor sentiment was hit by heavy selloff in world markets. ‘Clear-cut case of corruption’: Rahul attacks PM Modi, govt over new Rafale report

New Delhi : In a fresh attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the Rafale deal, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Thursday called the Rs 59,000 crore deal for 36 fighter jets a “clear-cut case of corruption” and accused the government of a cover up. Gandhi also questioned the timing of defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s three-day visit to France. “I don’t know what the emergency is... It is pretty clear that there is a huge cover-up... India’s Defence Minister going to France... What can be a clearer,” he said at Gandhi said at a hurriedly-convened press conference. Gandhi’s criticism comes a day after a French media report suggested that the

French aviation firm had been told to partner with Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group, based on a 2017 Dassault document. The company has denied this interpretation, underlining that it had “freely chosen” Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group as an offset partner for the Rafale deal. The Congress president was dismissive of Dassault Aviation’s denials. “Remember one thing. Dassault is sitting on a huge contract. It will say what Indian govt wants them to say,” said Gandhi who is spearheading the opposition campaign against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the centre ahead of key state elections and Lok Sabha elections next year.

Irani said this when she was asked to comment on the matter. “It is for the gentleman in question to issue a statement. It would not be proper for me

to comment because I wasn’t present. But at the same time do not judge the women speaking out because it must be extremely difficult for them to do so,” the minister said. The costs of sexual harassment in the workplace

The Indian media and entertainment industry’s moment of reckoning has been a long time coming. The numerous accounts of sexual harassment by women on social media over the past few days have named men of accomplishment and power, from journalists and actors to comedians and advertising professionals. They have shown with painful clarity the culture of impunity and entitlement that has enabled such men. It is tempting, if cynical, to say that those surprised by this have chosen to be so. There is a reason the #MeToo campaign, started in the US last year with the New York Times’ exposure of Harvey Weinstein, has been driven by social media. Workplace sexual harassment and abuse are offences that often don’t leave a trail of evidence. ‘He said, she said’ scenarios are stacked against the victim to begin with. When legal and workplace systems of grievance and redressal are weak, it skews the balance of power further. The cases where there is, in fact, evidence often don’t fare much better. Whisper networks and social media campaigns are logical responses by women. They are end-runs around patriarchal institutions and systems. They also raise messy questions about proof and public shaming. But that makes understanding why formal mechanisms have failed women all the more important. That they have done so is apparent from the allegations over the past few days. Many of these allegations have at least one of three elements in common. First, women who were harassed did not speak out at the time because of a misogynistic environment that normalized such behaviour or made the cost of speaking up too great to bear. Second, they wished to take action but could not due to a lack of institutional infrastructure and support. Third, they did speak out but their complaints were dismissed, or worse, boomeranged. Taken together, this shows a profoundly broken system. The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013, built on the Vishaka Guidelines issued by the Supreme Court in 1997, was aimed at fixing this. There has been some progress. According to annual reports and anti-sexual harassment advisory Complykaro. com, the number of cases reported has risen year on year among the 50 largest companies by market valuation. This is a good thing. It shows that the internal complaints committees (ICCs) mandated by the Act are allowing more targets of sexual harassment to come forward. But this comes with plenty of caveats. The bulk of the complaints are concentrated in the IT and finance sectors. In fact, four companies account for more than half the complaints.

India vs West Indies: After scoring a century in his maiden Test against West Indies, Prithvi Shaw has been compared with Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag.

Do not compare Prithvi Shaw with SV Sunil in serious anyone, give him space, says Kohli doubt for hockey World Cup due to knee injury

Bhubaneswar : In a major setback for the Indian hockey team, star striker S V Sunil has been all but ruled out of next month’s World Cup after suffering a knee injury. Sunil suffered the ligament injury on his left knee on October 4 during India’s ongoing preparatory camp. He will require four to five weeks to recover from the injury, which virtually shuts the door on him for the World Cup to be held here from November 28 to December 16. “I suffered the injury while diving for a ball during training on October 4. I have consulted specialists here and the MRI revealed it is an Lateral Collateral Ligament injury (LCL)

injury,” Sunil told PTI at the Bhubaneswar airport. “Initially there was massive swelling and then the doctors here said that there appears to be a slight gap in the knee joint,” he added. Sunil is flying to Delhi on Thursday to consult Hockey India’s official doctor B K Nayak after which his availability for the World Cup will be known. He, however, still remains hopeful. “I am still hopeful because a week has already passed and recovery from the LCL injury generally takes four weeks. Let’s see what happens. I will get a clear picture tomorrow. But if I can’t play in the World Cup that would be a massive loss for me,” he said.

Rupee recovers after slumping to record low, up 9 paise against US dollar

Mumbai: The rupee climbed 9 paise to end at 74.12 per dollar on Thursday after tumbling to a fresh lifetime low in intra-day trade amid a sharp sell-off in global markets. Softening crude oil prices and the greenback weakening against other currencies provided support to the home unit, brokers said. Asian and European equities sank deep into the red after US markets reeled due to concerns surrounding global growth and rising bond yields. At the Interbank Foreign Exchange (Forex), the rupee opened lower at 74.37 and lost further ground to hit a record intra-day low of 74.50 against the US dollar on strong demand for

the American currency from importers amid unabated foreign fund outflows. However, the rupee clawed back lost ground and finally settled for the day at 74.12, up by 9 paise, posting a gain for the second consecutive day in an otherwise volatile market. On Wednesday, the rupee rose by 18 paise to 74.21. “Rupee gained due to falling oil prices and slide in domestic bond yield. Oil prices declined in expectation of increased production and if this trend continues, the rupee may find some stability,” Geojit Financial Services Head of Research Vinod Nair said. Brent crude was trading at USD 81.54 per barrel, down 1.87 per cent.

New Delhi : With Prithvi Shaw scoring a ton in his maiden Test against West Indies at Rajkot, the teenage sensation has invited comparisons with Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag from fans and the media. Speaking to reporters at the press conference ahead of the 2nd Test, skipper Virat Kohli insisted that the 18-year-old should be given space to grow. “I don’t think he should be rushed into anything yet because you need to give a youngster a space to grow, in his own abilities. This guy is supremely talented and he has got great ability as everyone saw,” the captain said. Shaw scored 134 runs in 154 balls in the first innings of the first Test. Kohli admired the talent and said that Shaw is a sharp learner who plays as per

the situations. “We definitely think he (Shaw) has it in him to play at the highest level and he can repeat what he did in the first game. He is a very keen learner, a sharp guy. He understands situations well. We are all very happy for him,” the 29-year-old said. But the captain insisted that he should not

be compared to former legends as it might put pressure on him. “We shouldn’t compare him to anyone yet. We shouldn’t put him in a space where he feels pressure of any kind and he should be left in a space where he enjoys his cricket and slowly grows into a player we all believe in,” Kohli said.

India vs West Indies: Devendra Bishoo on a journey of discovery in India

New Delhi : THE FIRST thing that Devendra Bishoo does upon checking into a hotel room is figure out which direction the sun rises from in order to set up his mini temple. But since his team reached Hyderabad only on Tuesday night for the second Test, the West Indies leg-spinner had to wake up at the break of dawn Wednesday to watch the sun and arrange his murtis — Shiva, Ganesha and Durga, among others — and his copy of the Hanuman Chalisa. The

32-year-old Guyanese leg-spinner of Hindu origin says he wakes up earlier than most of his teammates, even on match days, to recite the Gayatri mantra and do his morning puja before leaving for the ground. It’s a tradition that Bishoo follows wherever he is. But nowhere does he get more excited about connecting with his roots than when he is in India. This is Bishoo’s first trip here in over seven years. A cricket tour to India is more than just proving his worth as a spinner on helpful pitches.

Replying to a question when the company expects its venture to be profitable in view of fierce competition from e-retailer majors like Amazon and Flipkart-Walmart, Betzel said Ikea was certainly looking at profitability by developing the business online with physical meeting points. “When Ikea will be profitable? I cannot tell now, but certainly we are aiming at profitability in coming years,” he added.

Gujarat migrant exodus: In district that was epicentre of attacks, anger about outsiders taking jobs Sabarkantha : Almost two weeks after a Bihari man allegedly raped a 14-monthold child in Gujarat’s Sabarkantha district on September 28, sparking attacks on migrants that prompted an estimated 50,000 people from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh to flee the state, work slowly resumed on Tuesday in factories in the block in which the violence started.

Despite rumours of a bandh in the district headquarters at Himmatnagar and an attack on a factory in Idar as recently as Monday, manufacturing operations were getting underway again. News of the alleged rape outside a ceramics unit near Sabarkantha’s Gambhoi town last fortnight had led to migrants being attacked in at least seven of Gujarat’s

33 districts. Several factories had to suspend operations for lack of workers. As of Tuesday, approximately 450 people had been arrested for the attacks. Two weeks later, observers are still trying to understand why the alleged rape of the child resulted in so much violence. Part of the blame is being attributed to Alpesh Thakor.

Alpesh Thakor Ends ‘Goodwill’ Fast, Says He Case filed against Gujarat CM Vijay Rupani, Alpesh Is Not ‘Spreading Hatred’ Thakor in hate attacks

AHMEDABAD: Congress legislator Alpesh Thakor, who is facing the heat over the violence against Hindi-speaking migrants in Gujarat, observed a day-long fast in Ahmedabad today for “peace and harmony” and asserted that “no one is a migrant”. He said “someone may have said something” against the migrants and that the real culprits were those who politicised the issue. He ended the fast in the evening by drinking a glass of juice offered by a girl from a migrant family. After the rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district on September 28 and arrest of a labourer hailing from Bihar for the crime, six districts in

Gujarat have seen incidents of violence against Hindi-speaking migrant workers. The attacks led to exodus of an estimated over 60,000 migrants, mostly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Madhya Pradesh. In his address, at the venue of his ‘Sadbhavna Upvas’ (goodwill fast) near his residence in the Ranip area in the city, Mr Thakor said he never spread hatred. “I am not at all into spreading hatred... We (his Thakor community) are pure at heart. It is possible that someone may have said something (against migrants), but we do not harbour grudge against anyone. We never indulge in violence,” the Congress leader said.

Muzaffarpur : A case was filed against Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Congress legislator Alpesh Thakor in a Bihar court Thursday in connection with hate attacks on north Indians, particularly from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, in the western state. Social activist Tamanna Hashmi filed the case at a Muzaffarpur district court. The case was filed under IPC sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 295 (defiling a place of religious worship) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace). Naming Rupani and Thakor as “accused”, the petitioner has

claimed that the violence against people from Bihar has cause him “hurt”. Judge Gaurav Kamal fixed November 2 as the date of hearing the petition. The alleged rape of a 14-month-old girl in Sabarkantha district of Gujarat by a resident of Bihar on September 30 had triggered attacks by locals on migrants from the two northern states, forcing many of them to return home. Thakor had publicly blamed a “non-Gujarati” for the crime. The case was filed under IPC sections 153 (provocation with intent to cause riot), 295 (defiling a place of religious worship) and 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace).

international Donald Trump is rerouting world’s oil tankers

Washington : US President Donald Trump is redirecting global oil flows. West African and Latin American producers are sending ever-growing volumes of crude to China. America’s exports to the Asian country have slumped in favour of its neighbours. There’s an urgent global need to find replacement barrels for Iran’s, whose exports might just collapse next month. The thing that connects the shifting flows is Trump’s foreign policy. China’s slumping purchases of American crude — and its extra buying from elsewhere — have coincided with a trade war between the U.S. and the Asian country. Likewise, reimposed sanctions on Iran, which start Nov. 4, have increased the need for the type of heavy, sour crude that the Persian Gulf state sells. “If you combine the impact of U.S. sanctions on Iran and the U.S. trade war with China, it is Trump’s foreign policy which is reshaping oil flows,” said Olivier Jakob, managing director of consultancy Petromatrix GmbH. “The U.S. is becoming a great energy power and they will use that, we are starting to see the implementation of that in different parts of the energy scene, part of that is being seen today in the oil flows.”

Tony Blair says UK needs a referendum to stop Brexit

London : The United Kingdom should call a referendum to allow voters to choose between a no-deal Brexit and staying in a reformed European Union as British politics is deadlocked over the issue, former Prime Minister Tony Blair said on Thursday. Less than six months before the United Kingdom’s exit from the European Union, there is little clarity about how the world’s fifth largest economy and its preeminent international financial centre will trade with the EU after Brexit If Prime Minister Theresa May can strike a deal with the EU, she has to get it approved by the British parliament, which is deeply divided over Brexit. Some members of her ruling Conservative Party are unhappy about the Brexit proposals she has made, and the main opposition Labour Party has indicated it is likely to vote down any deal May brings back. Blair, a former Labour prime minister, said he did not expect May to be able to get a deal through parliament so the country should be offered a new vote. “It really is difficult… The alternatives are all worse because if you do get to a blockage in parliament that is what opens up the possibility of going back to the people,” Blair, who was premier from 1997 to 2007, told a Reuters newsmaker in London.

IMF chief Christine Lagarde warns against trade, currency wars, urges fix to global rules

Gujarat: Panel may bring Rs 1.29 lakh cr relief to stranded power projects

Ahmedabad : The recommendations of a highpowered committee on stranded power projects set up by the Gujarat government can bring a combined relief of Rs 1.29 lakh crore for Tata, Adani and Essar’s power plants in the state over the next 30 years, according to a source. If the recommendations are implemented, the consumers will have to face the brunt of high power tariffs. A three-member committee comprising former Supreme Court judge Justice R K Agrawal, former RBI Deputy Governor S S Mundra and former Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) chairperson Pramod Deo was set up by the Gujarat government on July 3,

2018 to find solutions for the three thermal power plants located in the state that were in financial distress. The committee has “submitted its recommendations earlier this month and the three power plants would get a combined benefit of Rs 1.29 lakh crore in next 30 years if the recommendations are implemented”, a source said. “The bankers are already facing a stress of Rs 18,000 crore due to these plants. Besides, the consumers will face the brunt of higher power tariff in the states that inked power purchase agreements with these plants...” The panel’s recommendations are measures to find a resolution to the losses suffered by the three identified power projects

in Gujarat -- 4,000 MW Coastal Gujarat Power Limited of Tata Power, 4,620 MW at Mundra, Adani Power Mundra Limited and 1,200 MW Essar Power Gujarat Power Limited at Salaya. The Supreme Court had ruled that these plants can not pass through the increase in cost of imported coal under change in law clause to consumer. The cost of coal had risen due to change in regulation in Indonesia. The source said, “It is understood that the committee has recommended complete passthrough of fuel costs; extension of PPA (power purchase agreements) term and sacrifice by lenders. The resolution, if adopted, will burden the consumers with the risk of both increase in imported coal

price as well as risk of RupeeUSD exchange rate variations for a period of over 30 years.” He further said, “The risk stands transferred from project developers to consumers and lenders, without any fault of theirs. The Rs 1.29 lakh crore benefit to power developers will burden the consumers in Gujarat, Haryana, Maharashtra, Punjab and Rajasthan.” In Gujarat alone, consumers will have to bear the burden of Rs 90,000 crore. The issues causing hardship to these projects were deliberated at length within the legal and regulatory framework available in the country – the CERC (Central Electricity Authority, APTEL (Appellate Tribunal for Electricity) and the Supreme Court.

Nusa Dua : International Monetary Fund Managing Director Christine Lagarde on Thursday warned countries against engaging in both trade and currency wars, saying these would hurt global growth and imperil “innocent bystanders.” Formally launching the IMF and World Bank annual meetings on the Indonesian resort island of Bali, Lagarde urged countries to “de-escalate” trade conflicts and fix global trading rules instead of abandoning them. The United States and China have slapped tit-for-tat tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of each other’s goods over the past few months, rattling financial markets as investors worry that the escalating trade conflict could knock global trade and investment. Share markets in Asia plunged to a 19-month low on Thursday after Wall Street’s worst losses in eight months led to broader risk aversion, partly due to the heated global trade tensions as well as rapidly rising dollar yields. “We certainly hope we don’t move in either direction of a trade war or a currency war. It will be detrimental on both accounts for all participants,” Lagarde told a news conference. “And there would also be lots of innocent bystanders,” including countries that are part of China’s supply chain.
