What hit the BJP in the Hindi heartland was the rage of farmers and agrarian distress.

Congress wrests Rajasthan, makes big gains in MP, Chhattisgarh New Delhi: As Congress president Rahul Gandhi emerged victorious with his party set to wrest the BJP strongholds of Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh and tightly-contested Madhya Pradesh, worry lines finally appeared on the forehead of the saffron parivar. With the Lok Sabha elections barely months away, a defeat in the Hindi heartland is set to give invincible duo Narendra Modi and Amit Shah sleepless nights. If the elections were being seen as a resurgence of the Congress, the polls also saw the return of Dalit queen Mayawati, whose BSP made significant gains

in MP and Chhattisgarh. The results didn’t merely indicate that regional satraps would continue to play a key role, but they also put a spoke in TD supremo N. Chandrababu Naidu’s ambition to emerge as the main face of the Opposition

after the TDP-Congress’ humiliating defeat in Telengana. TRS chief K. Chandrashekhar Rao could well be the new face in the Opposition block. While Rajasthan voted on the expected lines by changing the ruling party every five years, a complete rout

The Congress party has won five seats, while the BJP secured one. The Independents have won five seats and are leading in three. Aizawl: The Mizo National Front (MNF) emerged victorious in the Mizoram Assembly elections on Tuesday, bagging 24 seats out of the 40-member Assembly, according to the latest figures by the Election Commission of India. The MNF was also leading in two more seats, even as it crossed the 21-seat mark required to form the government in the state. The Congress party has won five seats, while the BJP secured one. The Independents have won five seats and are leading in three. BJP leader and Assam Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma tweeted, “Congratulations to Pu Zoramthanga for historic win of #MNF in #Mizoram. Meanwhile @BJP4India also opens its account in Mizoram.”

Currently, Mizoram is a part of the North-East Regional Political Front, which supports the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Zoramthanga said: “I am not going to go for any coalition since I can for government on my own. My first priorities will be three things — to impose prohibition on liquor, repair roads and implement Social Economic Development Programme (SEDP) which is our flagship programme.” The Congress party, which has been in power in Mizoram since 2008, was eyeing a third consecutive term. However, incumbent Chief Minister Lal Thanhawla, who contested from Serchhip and Champhai South, lost both the seats.

in Chhattisgarh came as a major shock for saffron forces. “I take the responsibility for this defeat because the poll was contested under my leadership. We will act as a strong Opposition,” outgoing Chhattisgarh CM Raman Singh said. As Mr Gandhi in a late-evening press meeting “thanked” party workers, farmers, youths and traders for voting the Congress to power in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh, a see-saw battle continued to rage till late Tuesday night between the Congress and the BJP in MP. Till late night the Congress continued to maintain a slender lead.

Prime Minister taught me what not to do, says Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi: Congress chief Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi taught him “what not to do” and he also “learnt a lot” from the massive defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. Mr Gandhi also said the Prime Minister got a massive mandate but refused to listen to “heartbeat of the country”. Addressing a press conference here after the Congress’ resurgence in the Hindi heartland states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh, he said, “I was speaking to my mother on Monday and I was telling her that the

absolute best thing for me was the 2014 election. I’ve learnt a lot from that election.” The most important thing that he learnt from the 2014 polls was humility, said the 48-year-old Congress chief. “This is a great country and the most important thing in this country is what the people feel,” he said. As a politician one has to listen to what the people feel and also connect with what they feel,” Mr Gandhi said. “Frankly, Mr Narendra Modi taught me the lesson — what not to do,” Mr Gandhi said. He said, “Five years ago, he (Modi) was handed a massive opportunity to transform this country.

Telangana poll results: KCR sweeps, win 88 of 119 seats

The people of Telangana made it more than clear KCR is the only man they trust to govern the state. Hyderabad: The pink tsunami buried not just the Mahakutumi but also the BJP. No one survived except the MIM, which sided with the giant. The verdict was emphatic and it was clear. If it is Telangana, it has to be KCR. No wonder Kutami got a pink slip. The people of Telangana made it more than clear he is the only man they trust to govern the state. Caretaker Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao led the Telangana Rashtra Samiti to a sweep on Tuesday, winning 88 of 119 seats in the first Assembly election in the separate state. It was a foregone conclusion that the TRS would win. There really was no wave against him or his

policies and certainly no talk of the Congress at the ground level. What is breathtaking is the extent of the sweep. Senior Congress leaders like J. Geeta Reedy, K. Jana Reddy, T. Jeevan Reddy and A. Revanth Reddy have lost. The BJP’s Dr K. Laxman and G. Kishan Reddy who have won consistently faced defeat. If it is argued that the BJP stalwarts lost thanks to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath who wanted to change the name of Hyderabad to Bhagyanagar, then the Congress certainly lost by tying up TD president and AP Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu — an arch rival — and the TJS which did not even open its account.

Shaktikanta Das appointed as new RBI Governor

Mumbai: Former finance secretary and current member of the finance commission Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on Tuesday, a government statement said. Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the central bank chief a day after Urjit Patel resigned from the post citing personal reasons. Das, a history graduate from the prestigious St. Stephen’s College in Delhi,

was brought to the Finance Ministry soon after the BJP-led NDA government came to power in mid2014 and given charge of the crucial revenue department. Das, an IAS officer of Tamil Nadu, has been appointed for a term of three years. He is the 25th Governor of the RBI. Das retired as Economic Affairs Secretary in May 2017. At the recent G-20 meet in Argentina, Shaktikanta Das was India’s Sherpa.

Rahul’s moment, Modi’s challenge

Another contentious electoral showdown has just concluded. But given that the country is less than six months away from the 17th general election, the fallout of these results holds added importance. The first takeaway is that the verdict is undoubtedly a setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which since its audacious win in 2014 had morphed into an electoral juggernaut—staking itself as the principal pole of Indian politics. Yes, it did suffer a humiliating reverse in Bihar and an even worse defeat in Delhi at the hands of the Aam Aadmi Party—then the hottest political start-up in the country. These blemishes apart, it has steadily devoured electoral territory hitherto under the control of its principal rival, the Congress. Consequently, it has acquired an electoral footprint that stretched, till six months ago, from the northeast to the west and from Jammu and Kashmir in the north to the Vindhyas in the south. The feat was remarkable for a party, which till 2014 was a political pariah. With the Congress pulling Chhattisgarh back decisively and managing slender wins in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh—all of which had the saffron party as the incumbent—it has demonstrated that the BJP electoral machine is beatable. More worryingly for the BJP, its narrative is beginning to acquire a stale overtone. Over the last year, in particular, it has acquired a shrillness dwelling on negatives rather than the more saleable message of positive change in an era when aspirations are growing. By any measure, the BJP-led coalition at the centre has succeeded in implementing a mix of big-ticket reforms such as the rollout of the goods and services tax and initiation of a new bankruptcy law to deal with the burgeoning bad debt problem, even while it has pressed ahead with a social empowerment strategy for those at the bottom of the pyramid, including a staggering health insurance plan for 500 million people. However, somewhere along the way it has been distracted by the opposition’s anti-incumbency narrative and become defensive. For the BJP, the task is cut out. Over the next six months, the party and its principal draw, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, will have to figure out a new political playbook to regain their stride in time for the 2019 showdown. Modi’s electoral success has been built by claiming the dominant narrative; every time his party has suffered a reverse, it is because it has allowed the opposition to define the electoral battle lines.

Bollywood I try to keep my professional and personal life separate: Anushka

Mumbai: : Having witnessed another mega wedding in Italy after she and her then boyfriend, Virat Kohli, tied the knot in scenic Tuscany last year, we could not resist the temptation to ask her about the latest power couple, Deepika-Ranveer, choosing that country as their chosen wedding destination.Anushka bats this one with great diplomacy, saying: “Hmmm… Italy!! Kya bolun? Good for Italy! Does her outspoken nature and her penchant to

speak her mind get her into trouble? “Even if I have, I don’t care. I don’t say anything that’s not true nor do I say anything that is not necessary. Why bother to say anything that’s not necessary?” Next we quiz if she gets support from husband Virat Kohli and she says: “I have always been an independent person. Need to face challenge to get back: Mitchell Marsh on being dropped for 2nd Test

Marsh’s numbers with the bat in the longest format have dipped significantly since his 96 runs against South Africa. Dubai: After being dropped from the first Test against India, Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh on Tuesday stated that one has to face the challenge of getting back into the team. “I was obviously very disappointed to miss out in the first Test, but I understood the reasons why. Ultimately, you’ve got two ways to go about it and enjoy the hard work, enjoy the challenge of getting back into that Test side,” ICC quoted Marsh, as saying. “Every Test match you miss out on is shattering. I got plenty of messages of support. I cop a fair bit but I do have a lot of people who care about me and always have

support for me,” he added. In spite of scoring 151 for Western Australia, Marsh was left out of the playing XI for the Adelaide Test. He then returned to captain Western Australia, but scores of 21 and 11 and just one wicket didn’t strengthen his case for selection in the second Test at Perth, starting December 14. Marsh’s numbers with the bat in the longest format have dipped significantly since his 96 runs against South Africa. Since then, in 11 innings, he has failed to cross fifty and has been dismissed for two ducks, apart from five other single-digit scores.

Australia endured some frustrating moments during their 31-run loss to India in first Test when a few decisions went against the hosts.

DRS is frustrating and not the perfect system, says Tim Paine

Adelaide: Australia Test skipper Tim Paine has questioned the decision review system, saying it has been “frustrating” to deal with the technology that is “not a perfect system”. Australia endured some frustrating moments during their 31-run loss to India in first Test when a few decisions went against the hosts after reviewing the umpires calls Umpire Nigel Llong had given Ajinkya Rahane out caught at bat-pad for 17 early on Sunday but the decision was overturned on review when replays indicated that the ball had hit the batsman’s front pad outside the line of off stump and missed his bat and gloves. Similarly, Cheteshwar Pujara, who had scored a gritty 123 in the first innings, was adjudged out on eight and 17 to Lyon on Saturday but the dismissals were overturned. Replays found no

contact with bat or gloves in his first dismissal and the second one was overruled as ball tracking suggested that the ball would have gone over the bails. “Look, it’s (DRS) not a perfect system and I haven’t got the answers. It’s just frustrating, I’d imagine it’s frustrating for everyone.

DoT bails out MTNL with Rs 120 crore lifeline for November salary bill

New Delhi: Cash-strapped state telco MTNL has received a Rs 120 crore lifeline from Department of Telecom recently to help it pay the salary of its staff for the month of November, reflecting the worsening financial position of the PSU. “We have cleared some old dues of MTNL and paid them Rs 120 crore for salary payment in November after they approached DoT for this. Their expenditure remains same but revenues are falling. There were some old dues to be paid to them for services rendered by MTNL and we will pay another Rs 160 crore also. The dues related to phone bills, rentals for using buildings of MTNL and were spread over the last 15 years. We have not done verification of their claims but have given them the funds on adhoc basis due to their urgency,” DoT sources said. MTNL chairman and MD told FC, “We didn’t seek any grant from

DoT. We have asked for the pending issues to be settled. Some of them are long pending legacy issues, MTNL I see approximately should receive Rs 1,300-Rs 2,000 crore for settlement of its earlier dues and these related to GPF of employees, earlier bonds interest payment which we had raised on behalf of the DoT and the department has to pay us the remaining interest amount to the tune of Rs 400 crore. We have reasoned our case to DoT.” He however, clarified that the DoT has not got back to MTNL on the above claims. MTNL’s monthly salary bill is Rs 200 crore and its accumulated losses stand at Rs 2,936 crore. Its total debt at the end of the second quarter was Rs 19,000 crore and losses were Rs 859 crore in Q2. As on September 30, 2018, HCL Tech had huge reserves and surplus on their books, which, so far, has mostly been used for share buybacks. At the close of second quarter of FY19 HCL Tech had Rs 40,757 crore reserves and surplus on its books. A part of it may be used to fund an all cash-deal

acquisition of select IBM software products, announced last week, to enhance its capabilities. But market experts were not sure of the HCL Tech-IBM deal going through. It’s too early to say the deal will work and will be executed due to several challenges like its size and valuation, said an equity analyst Top IT companies’ reserves and surplus as of September 30 need to be studied in light of HCL Tech’s acquisition to understand the pipeline of such big acquisitions. “Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Infosys and Wipro are best positioned from the perspective of acquisition.

New York : Pakistan continues to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill American soldiers, US ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley has said, asserting that Washington should not blindly give Islamabad even a dollar until it steps up efforts to combat terrorism. Haley, the first Indian-American ever appointed to a Cabinet position in any US presidential administration, said the US did not need to give money to countries that wish harm to America, go behind its back and try and “stop us from doing things”. “…I think there should be a strategic view on which countries we partner with, which ones we count on to work with us on certain things, and move forward accordingly. I think we just blindly allow money to keep going without thinking that this is real leverage. We have to use it,” Haley told US magazine ‘The Atlantic’. “The one example I’ll give you is, look at Pakistan. Giving them over a billion dollars, and they continue to harbour terrorists that turn around and kill our soldiers —that’s never okay. We shouldn’t even give them a dollar until they correct it. Use the billion dollars. That’s not a small amount of change,” she said.

Gujarat: Results slap on PM’s face, UPA-III will be a reality, says Shankersinh Vaghela

Gandhinagar : Former chief minister Shankersinh Vaghela on Tuesday called the BJP’s defeat in the three states of Hindi heartland — Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh — “a slap on the face of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his policies’’. Speaking to The Indian Express, Vaghela said,” “During campaigning, Modi told people that they will be voting for “Modi” and not for local leaders like (Rajasthan CM) Vasundhara Raje or (MP CM) Shivraj Singh Chouhan. That is why, the defeat is the voter’s response to Modi and his policies. This is the response of the middle classes and poor rural people who suffered the most owing to the policies of the Modi government This is neither the defeat of Vasundhara Raje, Shivraj Singh Chauhan or Raman Singh, but that of Modi personally.” “He (Modi) only gave

speeches all these years. A PM is supposed to run the country, not campaign for his party on our money. The results are just a trailer. BJP and Modi will get the real taste in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections when people will throw BJP out of power… UPA-III will become a reality, and I am sure that a coalition government of 20-25 parties would perform far better than this government,” Vaghela, who had quit the Congress last year, added. “The BJP raised the issue of Ram Temple just on the eve of the Assembly polls to influence the voters. But the voters understood the BJP’s game. You cannot always fool people,” he said. Hitting out at the government over demonetisation and GST, Vaghela said, “More than one hundred people were murdered due to demonetisation.
