A stark reality set to befall us all

Demonetisation and introduction of GST, which together played havoc and hit the economy badly, however, brought an unintended benefit in their wake. The emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere in 2017 went down by an estimated 5 per cent or more for the first four months due to the disruption in economic activity, although overall, emissions were up by an estimated 4.6 per cent. This does not give the country any reason to feel complacent, however. India’s percapita emission is comparatively low because it is in its early stage of economic development, compared to developed nations. But the emission rate is only expected to increase as economy picks up steam. Despite a lower emission rate, India is already the world’s fourth largest emitter of carbon dioxide due to the large population. It has just been announced that the global emission of carbon dioxide, the single beigest cause for global warming, has peaked to the highest ever level this year. According to the American National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, the reading was more than 410 parts per million in April and May, surging past yet another climate milestone. This is the highest ever in history. The burning of oil, gas and coal releases greenhouse gases in accelerated measure, causing the earth’s temperature to rise. Carbon dioxide, particularly, traps solar radiation and keeps it confined to the atmosphere. If the current rate of increase continues, the amount of carbon dioxide in the air is expected to go up to 450 parts per million in only about 20 years, which means that nobody can hope to venture out without wearing a mask. In most major Indian cities, air pollution has already hit unbearable levels. Under the Paris Agreement, India has pledged to reduce the economy’s carbon intensity by 33-35 percent by 2030. This is sought to be achieved through impressive goals for using renewable energy sources. Under the Agreement, India is supposed to target 40 percent electricity generation capacity from non-fossil sources by 2030. According to experts, , if that capacity averages only 30 percent utilisation, while fossil sources average 70 percent, it would be equivalent to only about 22 percent of electricity generation. Some analysts, however, believe that India’s carbon intensity reduction target is easily achievable as New Delhi may have underpromised its performance on the international stage. With the emphasis shifting to renewable energy, the addition of new coal-fired power capacity in 2017 was the lowest in at least nine years while several older power stations have been retired. India must be assumed to be on its way to achieve the target, but it would undoubtedly entail a herculean task.

Afghanistan’s ‘beautiful’ journey to Test cricket is good for the game, says Dinesh Karthik

New Delhi: India are set to host Afghanistan in one-off Test from June 14 in Bengaluru and wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik has described Afghanistan’s cricketing journey as a “beautiful” one. The Test would also mark Afghanistan’s debut in the longer format. While Karthik hailed Afghanistan’s journey, he also gave a fitting reply to Afghan skipper Asghar Stanikzai’s comments. Stanikzai had earlier said that his side has got better spin attack than India’s. Commenting on this, Karthik insisted that the Indian spinners are much more

experience both at the international and domestic level. “Clearly all their spinners put together wouldn’t have played that many matches that (a young) Kuldeep Yadav (24 firstclass matches) would have played in four-day cricket,” Karthik said ahead of the historic one-off Test against Afghanistan starting Thursday. “I don’t know what the person (Stanikzhai) had said but you have got to understand that we have got a lot of experience, not only in Test match cricket but a lot of domestic cricket, a lot of four-day matches,” he added.

Darren Sammy welcomes disgraced Steve Smith for Canada T20 league

Bangalore : Former West Indies captain Darren Sammy is thrilled to have Steve Smith on his team for the inaugural Global T20 Canada league even though the disgraced Australian is banned from playing for his own country following a ball-tampering scandal. Smith’s career was thrown into turmoil in March for his role in the incident that took place in South Africa and earned the former Australia captain a 12-month ban from national and state teams. However, the suspension does not extend to domestic tournaments outside his home nation. “We all have done our fair share of mistakes in life, not just sports but in

general,” two-time world T20-winning captain Sammy told a conference call on Monday. “Obviously Steve Smith is an amazing cricketer, someone who I would have on my team anyday.” Smith’s comeback from cricket exile will begin as a member of the Toronto Nationals, who picked the 29-year-old Australian in the second round of a draft held last week ahead of the June 28-July 15 tournament in Toronto. It will mark Smith’s first competition since he, vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were banned by Cricket Australia for conspiring to scuff up the ball with sandpaper during the third test against South Africa.

Mohammed Shami fails fitness test, out of Afghanistan Test squad

Bangalore : India’s pace spearhead Mohammed Shami was ruled out of the one-off Test against Afghanistan and the A tour to England later this month as he failed a fitness test at the National Cricket Academy here on Monday. It’s learnt that he had been carrying a hamstring injury that was hampering him. Consequently , the selectors have drafted in uncapped Delhi pacer Navdeep Saini, who had a prolific Ranji season. Shami, prone to injuries, was largely warming the benches in the Indian Premier League too-he played just four matches for Delhi Daredevils and was far from his influential best, managing only three wickets from four outings and bleeding nearly eight runs an over. Realising he was clearly not 100 percent, the franchise management had advised him to sit out of the IPL, after which he went to the NCA for rehabilitation. He had also

missed the charity T2oI match between World XI and West Indies at Lord’s on May 31. “The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Navdeep Saini as Mohammed Shami’s replacement in the Indian Test team for the upcoming Test against Afghanistan. The announcement came after Mohammed Shami failed to

clear the fitness test at NCA, Bengaluru,” a BCCI released said. It’s unclear whether he failed the mandatory Yo-Yo test, or the routine fitness tests. Either way, the selectors reckoned it was not worth risking an injured Shami for a Test against newcomers Afghanistan, which even Virat Kohli has given a slip for a county stint before the England series.

Rafael Nadal admits he thought he would have retired by now Madrid : As Rafael Nadal celebrated lifting the French Open trophy for the 11th time, the Spaniard admitted that even he is surprised to be winning Grand Slam titles at the age of 32. “At this age I thought I’d be retired and be having a family,” Nadal told Spanish sports newspaper Marca. Nadal, who retained his world number one ranking following Sunday’s triumph in Paris, is also surprised that he and great rival Roger Federer, 36, continue to dominate the men’s game. The duo’s careers seemed all but over after both were sidelined with injuries in 2016 but in the last 18 months, all six majors have been won by either Federer or Nadal. When Federer beat Nadal in the 2017 Australian Open final, the Swiss ended a five-year Grand Slam title drought. Nadal also thought his glory days

were over as he had drawn a blank at the majors in 2015 and 2016. “It’s surprising because in 2017 I had gone for two years without winning a Grand Slam and I think he’d been without one since 2012, too,” added Nadal. “Of course it’s a surprise because we’re getting on a bit and when you’ve been such a long time without winning you don’t know if you’ll ever do so again.” Nadal’s victory on Sunday earned him a 17th slam, putting him just three behind Federer’s record haul of 20. However, he insisted he is not putting any pressure on himself to catch Federer. “Obviously I’d like to have 20 titles like him – or more – but that’s not in my head right now, and 17 is an incredible number. I want to enjoy the moment. “I can’t be thinking about the next win, that’d drive me crazy.

Uber Lite is a reimagined app that saves space, works on any network and on any Android phone

Introducing Uber Lite: Built in India, Designed for the World

New Delhi, June 12, 2018: Uber, the world’s largest ridesharing company, today announced the launch of Uber Lite, a reimagined version of the rider app, at Uber’s Tech Day 2.0, in New Delhi in the presence of Peter Deng, Head of Rider Product, Uber and Manik Gupta, VP and Head of Product, Uber. The new, spacesaving app that is built in India and designed for the world, also works in low connectivity areas and on 99% of Android devices. The launch of Uber Lite also further reiterates Uber’s investment in India and their commitment to continue innovating in India, for India and the world. Manik Gupta, Vice President Product, VP and Head of Product, Uber, said, “We have over 75 million monthly active riders, which is a tiny fraction of the world’s population. With such a huge growth opportunity outside of the U.S., we are committed to building for the next hundreds of millions

of riders. To better serve them, we are doubling down on building and designing products entirely in India — Uber Lite is our biggest launch yet on this journey. Peter Deng, Head of of Rider Product, Uber added, “A one-size-fits-all app doesn’t work for the diversity of network conditions, devices, and rider needs across Uber’s 77 countries and 600 cities. After extensive research with our riders, it was obvious we couldn’t just make a smaller copy of Uber. We needed to reimagine the experience for India and key markets around the world. The result is Uber Lite. A completely redesigned app that is light, simple, and works on any Android device and on any network.” Uber Lite’s new interface was designed to make booking rides quicker and lighter in spotty connectivity, on basic Android phones, and for people with limited data plans.

Compounder who Wanting group photo in blazer shot sex videos lands Surat mayor in controversy held in Angadh VADODARA: Police arrested Dilip Gohil, the compounder who used to work at the clinic of Dr Pratik Joshi in Angadh village near the city, late on Sunday night. Joshi and Gohil were booked at Nandesari police station on Sunday for rape, blackmailing, and for the violation of the Information Technology Act. Several videos of Joshi getting intimate with multiple women — said to be his patients — had gone viral on Saturday. Police picked up Gohil, who lives in Angadh, on Sunday for questioning and formally arrested him later. According to

police sources, Gohil admitted recording the videos on his mobile phone. He told the cops that he had been doing that because Joshi had been exploiting the women of the village. However, the complainant on Sunday had told the police that Gohil, after recording the video, started blackmailing her. She said he had threatened the rape survivor that he would circulate the video if she did not come to Joshi’s clinic whenever he called her. Police officials said that Gohil had sent the videos to four of his friends in the village.

SURAT: It is a custom in the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to have a group photo clicked of all councillors when term of mayor expires. But a decision by Surat mayor Asmita Shiroya with regard to the ceremony has landed her in a controversy. Shiroya had desired that the group photo be clicked with all councillors looking neat and tidy in blazers. So all the councillors were asked to get their blazers stitched from a specific shop. A BJP councillor said that they got a call from SMC to go to a specific shop and give measurement for the blazer. However, Congress members

Aslam Cyclewala, a Congress councillor from ward 18 (Anajana -Khatodara) paid Rs 2,900 for his blazer and showed his protest. He said, “I respect the post of mayor so I wore the blazer, but paid from my own pocket and not billed it to SMC.” However, mayor Shiroya she had paid for all the blazers. “This is my remembrance gift to all fellow councillors at the end of my term as mayor,” Shiroya told.

The Shamlapur refugee camp, near a fishing colony on one of the world’s longest beaches, is home to about 10,000 Rohingya refugees, aid groups say, many driven out of Myanmar’s Rakhine State by sectarian violence last year. “We saved our lives by escaping here, so we are happy to be here,” said Mohammed Yosuf, 20, who works as a fisherman, earning about 200 or 300 taka ($1.20 to $3.60) for each five-day trip. Yosuf said he fled with his wife, Sobora Khatun, who was nine months’ pregnant when they escaped after two months shackled in captivity. Their three-year-old son drowned in a river crossing, but baby daughter Rukia was born safely.

UK Brexit minister says parliament vote cannot reverse Brexit AHMEDABAD: Two married women in a lesbian relationship ended their lives — killing the threeyear-old daughter of one of them — by plunging into the water from the Sabarmati riverfront on Monday. The fire brigade team fished out bodies of 30-year-old Asha Thakor and Bhavna Thakor (28) that were found floating on the river near Gurjari Bazaar side. Asha’s daughter Megha was breathing when brought out and rushed to the VS Hospital where doctors declared her dead on admission. The women from Bavla town near Ahmedabad expressed their anguish at the society’s resistance to their relationship by writing on the riverfront’s parapet

wall with red lipstick. “We have left this world to live with each other. The world did not allow us to stay together. We did not have any men with us,” their message read. They also left a message on a paper-dish stating: “This world did not allow us to stay together. When will we meet again? When will we meet.. perhaps in the next birth… we will meet again.” Asha, who lived in Ghanshyam Residency in Bavla, got married 10 years ago and had two daughters - Megha and another aged six. Bhavna, a resident of Rajoda village near Bavla, had two sons — one 14 and another 13 years - after 15 years of marriage. Their parents had arranged their marriages.

Surat: Former chief minister Suresh Mehta alleged that the recent drive to conserve water undertaken by the Gujarat government was a “fabrication to hide deep-seated corruption”. The government had undertaken the month-long programme in May with an aim to deepen existing ponds, recharge ground water level and ensure better harvesting of rain water in the local water bodies. Mehta was reacting to the government’s claim of successful completion of the drive. Speaking to media persons on Tuesday, Mehta alleged that the programme was an effort on the part of the Vijay Rupani government to divert attention from allegations of corruption in Gujarat Land Development Corporation.

London : Britain’s Brexit minister David Davis said on Tuesday there would be no reversal of the decision to leave the European Union whatever the outcome of divorce talks with the bloc. British Prime Minister Theresa May faces a showdown in parliament with lawmakers later on Tuesday who want a “meaningful vote” on an eventual Brexit deal and to set the government’s “direction” if the house rejects the agreement. “Whatever we do, we’re not going to reverse that (decision to leave the EU),” David told BBC radio. “A meaningful vote is not the ability to reverse the decision of the referendum.” When asked if May would lead the conservatives into the next UK election, Davis also said “I think so … actually I hope so”.

Malaysia to reopen embassy in North Korea: PM Mahathir

Malaysia : Malaysia will reopen its embassy in Pyongyang, Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad has said, suggesting an end to the diplomatic row over the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s half-brother in Kuala Lumpur last year. “Yes, we will reopen the embassy,” Mahathir said in an interview with the Nikkei Asian Review published on Monday during his trip to Japan. Malaysia’s once-close ties with North Korea were severely downgraded after Kim Jong Nam was killed at a Kuala Lumpur airport in February 2017 when two women smeared his face with VX nerve agent, which the United Nations lists as a weapon of mass destruction. During their trial which is ongoing, the women said they were tricked into believing they were part of a reality show and did not know they were handling poison. The United States and South Korea have said the murder was orchestrated by Pyongyang. After Kim Jong Nam’s death, North Korea’s ambassador to Malaysia questioned the credibility of the police probe and insisted he was an ordinary citizen who died of a heart attack. Malaysia then recalled its ambassador to North Korea, banned its citizens from travelling to the North and cancelled visa-free entry for North Koreans. North Korea retaliated with a travel ban on all Malaysians in Pyongyang, trapping three diplomats and six family members. They were able to fly out only after Malaysia agreed to hand over Kim Jong Nam’s corpse and send three North Koreans wanted for questioning back to North Korea. Malaysia’s embassy in Pyongyang has not been staffed since April last year, and the government was considering permanently closing it and moving services to its Beijing mission.
