The ministry also said the National Clean Air Programme (NCAP) is likely to be finalised by the end of this month and sent to states so that they can make plans to curb air pollution. The Environment Ministry has prepared a draft NCAP with an objective to come up with a comprehensive plan for prevention, control and abatement of air pollution, and to augment the air quality monitoring network across the country.

Rajasthan: Self-styled godman arrested for kidnapping minor girl Rajasthan : A self-styled godman was arrested for allegedly kidnapping a minor girl in Rajasthan’s Jalore district, the police said Thursday. A habeas corpus plea is a petition which is filed to ensure a person under arrest is brought before a court which will determine whether the detention is legal. The accused ‘godman’ Mohanram alias Mohan Bhagat had allegedly kidnapped a 17-year-old girl in Sedwa village of Barmer on May 26, following which the family members had lodged a complaint. The accused was arrested on Wednesday from Chitalwana village of Jalore district, Barmer SP Gagandeep Singla said.

Iran says will strive to ensure oil supplies to India New Delhi : Iran will do its best to ensure security of oil supply to India by offering “flexible measures” to boost bilateral trade, a statement from Tehran’s embassy in New Delhi said. Iran is the third-biggest oil supplier to India and has offered refiners incentives including almost-free shipping and an enhanced credit period on oil sales. Imports from Iran could take a hit as the United States reintroduces sanctions on Tehran after withdrawing from a nuclear deal with world powers. India, Iran’s top oil client after China, asked refiners last month to prepare for drastic reductions or even zero Iranian oil imports. “Iran understands the difficulties of India in dealing with (an) unstable energy market and it has done and will do its best to ensure security of oil supply to India,” the statement said. India’s oil imports from Iran fell about 16 percent in June compared to May, tanker arrival data showed. “Iran has always been a reliable energy partner for India and others, seeking a balanced oil market and regional prices of oil which ensure the interest of both countries as consumer and supplier,” the statement said. India was one of the few countries that continued to deal with Iran during previous sanctions although it had to cut imports from Tehran as banking, insurance and shipping channels were choked.

Stressing that it was the Modi government that thrived upon an atmosphere of division, bigotry, and hatred, Surjewala said the Congress represented values of pluralism, diversity, and harmony

Choose words carefully in attacking ‘BJP’s hatred’, Congress tells cadres after Tharoor’s remark New Delhi : Congress leader Shashi Tharoor has failed to find support from his party for his remark that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would turn India into ‘Hindu Pakistan’ if it won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Distancing itself from Tharoor’s controversial remark, the Congress urged its leaders to choose their words carefully while rejecting the hatred being propagated by the saffron party. Taking to Twitter to clear the Congress’ stance on the issue, which has snowballed into a major controversy, party spokesperson Randeep Surjewala indicated the remarks by Tharoor were made in his personal capacity. Surjewala said India’s values and fundamentals set it apart

from the divisive idea of Pakistan. Stressing that it was the Modi government that thrived upon an atmosphere of division, bigotry, and hatred, the Congress leader said his party represented values of pluralism, diversity, and harmony and thus its leaders must realise the responsibility bestowed upon them before making off-the-cuff remarks.

SC hearing on Sec 377

Proceedings end for the day, will resume on Tuesday

New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Thursday resumed hearing a batch of petitions challenging the validity of Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that criminalises homosexuality. The Supreme Court observed that homosexuality was not an aberration but a variation and that once Section 377 was decriminalised, the stigma attached to the community would also go. The Supreme Court also reflected on the trauma that the LGBTQ community has to face

and the lack of medical facilities as well. A fivejudge bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justices R F Nariman, A M Khanwilkar, D Y Chandrachud and Indu Malhotra, is hearing the matter. From stigma and discrimination attached to the LGBTQ community to lack of medical facilities, here is a roundup of what transpired during the third day of the Supreme Court hearing into the petitions seeking decriminalisation of 158-year-old colonial law under Section 377 of the IPC.

Ludhiana : Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday took a swipe at the Congress party-led Punjab government over a recent World Bank report on the ease of doing business and asked why the state was slipping in its rankings. Modi was all praise for Haryana CM Manohar Lal Khattar after hearing the his speech that mentioned that Haryana was at number three among states in a recent World Bank report on ‘ease of doing business’. PM said: “While Haryana is bringing laurels for the country, you all need to ask your CM (Capt Amarinder Singh) as to why

the ranking of his state has slipped after Congress came to power.” Punjab is not in the list of top ten states as per the WB survey while in 2016, it was. The PM added: “It has been just a year and Congress ruled Punjab has slipped in ‘ease of doing business’ in the country while neighboring Haryana is shining.” Earlier, Khattar in his speech mentioned that as per the ranking, “Haryana is at number one in North India and at number three in the country, so Centre must take care to provide more schemes and facilities so that more investments can come to the state”. in 2018.”

Unnao rape case: BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar, who is currently lodged at Sitapur district jail, said he would continue his fight for justice and consult his lawyers on the CBI chargesheet.

I am a politician, should’ve got justice, but didn’t, says accused BJP MLA Kuldeep Sengar New Delhi : A day after the CBI filed a chargesheet against him for allegedly raping a minor in Unnao last year, BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar on Thursday said since he is a politician, he should have got justice even as he denied all the allegations. Sengar, who is currently lodged at Sitapur district jail, also said he would continue his fight for justice and consult his lawyers on the CBI chargesheet. “CBI has not given me justice. I am a politician, I should have got justice but I didn’t. I’ll consult my lawyers on the CBI report and fight for justice. I will get justice from the court. All the allegations on me are false,”

Sengar was quoted as saying by ANI. The agency also chargesheeted his neighbour Shashi Singh on the charge of aiding him in the crime. The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has also been invoked in the case. A CBI official said

that during the investigation, they had probed the BJP MLA’s claims that he was attending a birthday function at his friend’s house in Naubasta locality of Kanpur city at the time of the alleged crime. “The MLA tried to divert the investigation… his claims were not found to be true,” the official added. The incident had come to light in April after the woman tried to commit suicide outside Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence, alleging police inaction even though she had approached them several months earlier. The kin of the victim had also alleged that the family was thrashed after a complaint was filed with the police in this regard.

One ‘family’ and the farm distress

PM Modi has a remarkable knack to connect his audience with what he has in mind. Over the last weekend, while addressing a rally in Jaipur, he referred to the Congress ‘bail gadi’, making a dig at “several big leaders and former ministers of the party out on bail these days”. Only a day before that former minister Shashi Tharoor had secured bail in the case in which he is accused of abetting the suicide of wife Sunanda Pushkar, the similarity of the surname with the famous pilgrim centre in Rajasthan being only incidental. The other day in Punajb, Modi’s narrative was the time-tested Jai Jawan Jai Kisan, the state being proud of its credentials on both counts. He spoke about how the previous governments had made everything, including the interests of farmers, subservient to the welfare of ‘one family’ and accused Congress of betraying the farmers, using them only as a vote bank to win elections.”Farmers are the soul of our nation; they are our ‘annadata’. But the Congress always betrayed them and told lies to them,” he said. Modi lamented that despite toiling hard, farmers had lived a life of despair for decades because of the policies of Congress-led governments. But he said the NDA government was trying to restore respect to farmers and soldiers, and was committed to doubling farmers’ income by 2022. Although it was a promise, he was saying it with the assurance of having achieved the feat already. Modi’s claims apart, the record of the NDA government on the welfare of farmers so far has been nondescript. It was only after the drubbing that the BJP received at the hands of farmers in the Gujarat elections that the Modi government began focussing on farm distress, which acquired alarming dimensions in the past four years, with farmer suicides in the agriculture dominated states such as Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Gujarat becoming a routine. With General Elections due in less than a year from now, the government is in a desperate catch-up bid and has since announced a slew of measures to ameliorate the conditions of farmers. But many of these have been found to suffer major inadequacies. Although the Modi government is seeking to make a big show of the announcement of minimum support price for kharif crops, the fact remains that the 50 per cent return on the cost of inputs envisaged by the MSP is a far cry from what was recommended by the Swaminathan Committee. Price is definitely an issue, but it is only one part of the problem. Perhaps a bigger issue is in ensuring delivery and the elimination of middle men, who form one of the strong support bases of the ruling party, and it takes self-sacrificing courage to touch them.

Ace Cricketer Irfan Pathan Inaugurates the Cricket Academy of Pathans inMorbias part of its PAN India Expansion

Ahmedabad Wingers’ hoping to dethrone ‘Delhi Hoopers’ in 3x3 Pro Basketball League’s Chennai leg

London : Serena Williams demonstrated that having a baby had not robbed her of any of her phenomenal tennis skills when she became the first mother in 38 years to reach the Wimbledon final, with a 6-2 6-4 demolition of Germany’s Julia Goerges on Thursday. Goerges had come into her first Grand Slam semi-final having belted more winners (199), more aces (44) and more unreturned serves (113) than anyone else in the women’s draw but those statistics counted for little when she came up against an opponent who is in hot pursuit of a recordequalling 24th major. Remarkably, the 36-year-old was back in a Grand Slam final just 10 months after giving birth to her daughter Alexis Olympia. “It’s crazy. I don’t even know how to feel because I literally didn’t think I’d do this well in my fourth tournament back

in 16 months,” said the American, who won the 2017 Australian Open while in the early stages of her pregnancy. “When I don’t have anything to lose, I can just play so free and that’s what I’m doing. “This is not inevitable for me, I had a really tough delivery and multiple surgeries and almost didn’t make it to be honest. I couldn’t even walk to my mailbox, so it’s definitely not normal for me to be in a Wimbledon final. “I’m enjoying every moment.” That enjoyment was clear to see as she dashed Goerges’s hopes of setting up an allGerman final with Angelique Kerber in 70 unforgiving minutes. The 13th seed had never taken a set off Williams in three previous meetings and unfortunately for her, the American was once again at her dominant best on Thursday as she bludgeoned down five aces and 16 winners to finish off Goerges.

Ahmedabad : As the inaugural season of the FIBA recognized 3x3 Pro Basketball League enters the second leg, another round provides a fair chance for ‘Ahmedabad Wingers’ to overtake the leading team, ‘Delhi Hoopers’. The fourth round of the highly anticipated league will be held in Chennai on the 21st and 22nd of July, 2018 and ‘Delhi Hoopers’, with 302 points, lead the scoreboard currently, followed by ‘Ahmedabad Wingers’with 243 in the second spot. The ‘Ahmedabad Wingers’have been consistently doing well in the previous rounds and have a high chance to outperform‘Delhi Hoopers’ in the upcoming three rounds in Chennai, Bangalore and Mumbai. They yet hold a very strong

chance of giving ‘Delhi Hoopers’a tough fight by displayingexceptional skills to their advantage to finish at the top. Leonardo Souza de Lima has been the star player for ‘Ahmedabad Wingers’. With a total of 45 points, he stands third in the list of top scorers with just 8 points behind the first one, Kiran Shastri of ‘Delhi Hoopers’ and 7 points behind Patrick James McGlynn of ‘Jaipur Regals’. Rajan Sharma has been a constant support system for Lima with incredible assists in the previous games. Lima’s gameplay has the potential to turn around the scoreboard for Ahmedabad Wingers, along with aiming to be the top scorer of the first ever FIBA recognized league in India.

In A First, Israeli Helium Balloons To Monitor Rath Yatra In Ahmedabad AHMEDABAD: For the first time, the city police will use an Israeli helium balloon with high resolution camera to keep a vigil during the annual Lord Jagannath rath yatra procession in Ahmedabad on July 14, a senior official said today.Joint Commissioner of Police, Crime Branch, J K Bhatt, said that a helium balloon with a high resolution camera can keep an eye on the area of around five km, which is “much better” than camera-mounted unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), popularly known as drones. “We had used camera-mounted drones in the past during the rath yatras for air surveillance. This time, we have decided to use an Israeli helium balloon having a camera attached to it. From a height of 300 meters in the sky, this balloon camera would cover an area of five kms,” Mr Bhatt told reporters. He said the camera attached to the balloon will be very high definition and will also have night vision facility. “The live visuals captured by this powerful camera will be sent to the central control room. We can control the camera as well as balloon height from the ground. This balloon will be deployed at one location on the route and will be shifted to another place if required,” Mr Bhatt added. On the overall security arrangements for the rath yatra, Mr Bhatt said around 20,200 personnel of police, Home Guards, State Reserve Police (SRP) and armed men of para-military forces will be deployed at strategic locations along the 18-km long route of the rath yatra, which passes through some communally-sensitive areas.

Trial court made ‘erroneous’ observations in Vanzara’s discharge, says Bombay HC

that there was no prima facie evidence that placed Vanzara at the site of the said incidents. However, the trial court had failed to take note of the fact that Vanzara was the head of the ATS team that had abducted and killed Shaikh and the others, he said. “They were all acting on the orders of their chief (Vanzara). It was Vanzara who had orchestrated the entire plan. He needn’t have remained present at all the crime spots since he was giving the orders,” Tiwari said. Justice Badar then remarked that the discharge order for Vanzara, that was passed in August last year, did not take into account the fact that he needn’t have been

Vladimir Putin extends ban on Western food imports

Moscow : Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended a ban on Western food imports for another 18 months after the European Union’s decision to prolong its broader, punitive sanctions over Russia’s actions in Ukraine. Putin’s Thursday decree keeps the food ban in place until December 31, 2019. It follows the EU’s move to extend its restrictions until year’s end. The US and the EU introduced several rounds of sanctions to punish Russia for the annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea and support for separatist rebels in eastern Ukraine. They made lifting restrictions contingent on the progress of a 2015 peace deal for eastern Ukraine. Russia argues that the peace agreement has floundered at Ukraine’s fault. The sanctions have hurt the Russian economy, restricting access to global financial markets and cutting imports of key technologies.

Sohrabuddin fake encounter case

Ahmedabad : The Bombay High Court on Thursday remarked that prima facie the trial court, in its order granting discharge to Gujarat ATS chief D G Vanzara last year in the Sohrabuddin Shaikh encounter case, had made some “erroneous” observations. The remarks were made by Justice A M Badar, who is hearing a bunch of revision applications challenging the discharge granted by the trial court to several senior IPS officers of Gujarat and Rajasthan police, including Vanzara. The police officials have been charged by the Gujarat CID and CBI for the “fake” encounters of Shaikh, his wife Kausar Bi and their aide Tulsiram Prajapati. Justice Badar made the remark after the lawyer for Shaikh’s brother Rubabuddin argued that the special court’s order granting discharge to Vanzara was erroneous. The lawyer, Gautam Tiwari, argued that, in the order passed on August 1, 2017, the trial court had held

present at the spot. “This discharge order does not take into consideration any factors relevant to Vanzara’s case. It is as if the judge mistakenly passed the same order as Pandian’s in Vanzara’s case. It seems that the judge re-discharged Pandian instead of granting discharge to Vanzara,” Justice Badar said. Justice Badar has been conducting hearings on a daily basis on three revision pleas filed by Rubabuddin and another two by the CBI in the case. Rubabuddin has challenged the discharge granted to Vanzara, Gujarat IPS officer Dinesh M N and Rajasthan IPS officer Rajkumar Pandian.

on his maiden visit to UK

London : US President Donald Trump arrived in London on Thursday on his maiden visit to the UK during which he will hold bilateral talks with British Prime Minister Theresa May over closer post-Brexit ties, amid mass protests planned around Britain against his controversial policies. Protests are expected against Trump, whose policies – including a travel ban on a number of predominantly Muslim countries, the detention of child migrants on the US-Mexico border and the imposition of tariffs on EU steel and aluminium exports – have all been criticised by the UK. Trump and US First Lady Melania Trump touched down in their Air Force One at Stansted Airport in the east of England from the NATO summit in Brussels. Trump’s visit to the UK, the 12th US President to make such a tour, comes amid what he described as “turmoil” for the UK government, as Prime Minister May faces down a rebellion from within her own party over her Brexit strategy.

Stormy Daniels arrested at Ohio strip club, says her lawyer Avenatti

washington L Porn actress Stormy Daniels was arrested at an Ohio strip club and is accused of letting patrons touch her in violation of a state law, her attorney said early Thursday. While Daniels was performing at Sirens, a strip club in Columbus, some patrons touched her in a “non-sexual” way, her lawyer, Michael Avenatti, told The Associated Press. An Ohio law known as the Community Defense Act prohibits anyone who isn’t a family member to touch a nude or semi-nude dancer. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, was in police custody early Thursday morning and was expected to face a misdemeanour charge, Avenatti said. “This was a complete setup,” he said. “It’s absurd that law enforcement resources are being spent to conduct a sting operation related to customers touching performers in a strip club in a non-sexual manner.” A Columbus police spokeswoman didn’t immediately respond to a message seeking comment. A person who answered the phone at the strip club declined to comment. Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, has said she had sex with President Donald Trump in 2006 when he was married, which Trump has denied. She’s suing Trump and his former longtime personal attorney, Michael Cohen, and seeking to invalidate a nondisclosure agreement that she signed days before the 2016 presidential election.
