Will try to uphold credibilty and autonomy of RBI: Shaktikanta Das Mumbai: The newly appointed Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Shaktikanta Das on Wednesday said, “Will try to uphold the credibilty and autonomy of the great institution that RBI is.” Addressing the media in Mumbai, Shaktikanta Das said would not interfere into issues between the RBI and the government. “Wouldn’t go into issues between RBI and government but every institution has to maintain its autonomy and also adhere to accountability,” RBI Governor Das said. “Heartening to know that inflation is on target with a

benign outlook,” Das added. Das ensured that he would take adequate measures which the economy requires in a timely manner, adding that he will be meeting public sector bank chiefs in

the near future. The newlyappointed RBI Governor also said that he would be open to discussion on all issues. He said that he would like to focus on the banking sector immediately. “Banking is

an important segment in our economy and it’s facing several challenges that need to be dealt with. It’s the banking sector on which I’d like to focus immediately,” Das said.

Supreme Court dismisses contempt Poll results show plea against Yogi Adityanath yearning for ‘BJP-mukt’

Mumbai : The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed a contempt petition filed against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and others for non-compliance of the court’s earlier order on filling vacancies in agriculture boards and marketing committees. A bench of Justices U U Lalit and D Y Chandrachud said that no contempt is made out against the alleged contemnor — Yogi Adityanath. “No contempt is made out. The contempt petition is dismissed. The state government has said that it is filling up the vacancies as and when they arise. On

the face of it appears there are no vacancies,” the bench said. It warned the counsel for petitioner Anil Kumar and others saying that the court is not proceeding against him for suppressing the facts as the notice was earlier issued when the bench was informed that court’s 2005 order were not compiled by the state government. At the outset, counsel for Kumar said that in 2005, the apex court had directed to fill up all the vacancies in the agriculture boards and marketing committees but till now nothing has been done.

India needs to have a good oil hedging policy: Raghuram Rajan

In Parrikar defence, Goa government cites Steve Jobs Mumbai : CITING THE “accomplishments” of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, Goa government told a bench of the Bombay High Court that the mere diagnosis of cancer was not a sufficient argument to ask a Chief Minister to step down. The comparison was drawn by State Advocate General, Dattaprasad Lawande, before the bench in Goa comprising Justice R M Borde and Justice Prithviraj K Chavan, who were hearing a petition filed by local politician Trajano D’Mello demanding an evaluation by a panel of doctors to probe if Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is fit to discharge his Constitutional obligations. “Steve Jobs was diagnosed with the same pancreatic cancer. In fact, much of his accomplishments came after his diagnosis. Similarly, just the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer, the same ailment as Steve Jobs, is not enough to ask the Chief Minister to resign from office,” Lawande said. Jobs succumbed to pancreatic cancer on October 5, 2011. Lawande also referred to last year’s verdict by a ninejudge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, which declared Right to Privacy as a Fundamental Right.

Raghuram Rajan said if we look at agrarian unrest, one of the big concerns is that agrarian productivity has not increased as it should, and the prices have been fluctuating. Mumbai : With geo-political factors impacting crude prices, India needs to have a good oil hedging policy as the volatility will continue to rise, former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor, Raghuram Rajan said Wednesday. Rajan said the issue has been discussed in the past and it began with a strategic petroleum reserve, but beyond that there is a need to think about hedging oil prices especially when it comes to levels such as now. “There is a very strong need for an oil hedging mechanism for a country like ours which is so dependent on oil,” Rajan said in a pre-recorded interview being telecast at Times Network’s India Economic Conclave. The problem is many who are entrusted with this, fear the chance of oil prices falling even further if you hedge it, but that has to be taken as a national consequence of the

hedging programme. “We, as a country, must think about whether we should start this process,” he said. Rajan said as far the GDP growth number is concerned, there is always a need to do more. Giving an analogy, he explained, “The proof of the pudding is sometimes in the eating. If 25 million people are applying for 90,000 jobs, it suggests that we are not supplying that many jobs and that means growth is not strong enough at least in the job creating areas,” he said. According to him at this time one of the biggest areas of concern is state deficits, especially during election time where many states are promised waivers and also dole out goodies to attract votes. “This, often hampers them later on because ultimately what is suffering is investment,” He said.

regime: Shiv Sena

Mumbai : A day after the BJP received a poll drubbing in three Hindi heartland states, the Shiv Sena Wednesday said the election results indicate people’s desire to have a “BJP-free” establishment. The Sena, an ally of the BJP at the Centre and in Maharashtra, said people have brought “those flying in the air back to the ground”. Referring to the resignation of RBI Governor Urjit Patel, the Sena, in an editorial in the party mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, alleged that the country was being run according to the “whims” of four-five businessmen, and this was “breaking” important institutions like the Reserve Bank of India. The Congress Tuesday dealt a body blow to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan and emerged as the single largest party in Madhya Pradesh. The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) recorded a landslide win for a second consecutive term in Telangana while the Mizo National Front (MNF) scripted a spectacular victory in the northeastern state of Mizoram by dislodging the Congress in its last bastion in the Northeast to return to power after 10 years. The Sena said these results have busted the myth that no party except the BJP can hold ground and people have to depend on it for existence. The BJP first “drove away” allies and later lost important states, it said, adding that elections cannot be won merely on the back of big talks.

Shopian: Day after cops killed, families say learnt news on social media

Kulgam : On Tuesday afternoon, Rafiqa, wife of Jammu and Kashmir police official Anees Ahmad Mir, was looking for a cellphone at the family’s home in Soutch village, in Kulgam district of south Kashmir. She found it, and checking social media, spotted a picture of her husband — he was sprawled in a pool of blood. Shocked, Rafiqa showed the picture to her father-inlaw, Abdul Rashid Mir, who initially refused that it was his son. He later had to accept, and tell Rafiqa, who is pregnant with her first child, that it was Anees. He had been killed.

“For a moment, I tried to convince her that it was not Anees – that it was someone else…. But I recognised my son – he was lying on the ground,” Mir told The Indian Express. Anees was among the four policemen killed in a militant attack on a police picket at Zainapora area in neighbouring Shopian district on Tuesday afternoon. The policemen — identified as Abdul Majeed, Mehraj-ud-din, and Hameed-ul-lah, apart from Anees Mir — were posted at a picket meant for security of four Kashmir Pandit families living in the area.

Congress’ win in three states will change ‘picture, fate’ of country: Navjot Singh Sidhu

Sidhu said that the polls were a “battle of truth” which have laid the foundation for a change on political front in the country in 2019. Chandigarh : Punjab minister Navjot Singh Sidhu credited Congress’s victory in three Hindi heartland states to party chief Rahul Gandhi and said the win will change the “picture and fate” of the country. Sidhu, who had gone to see chief minister Amarinder Singh at his residence, told reporters that now the farmers could talk about their rights. The party won assembly elections in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh on Tuesday. “The Congress’s win in the three states will change the picture and fate of the country,” he told

reporters. He said even one win can change the picture and the Congress has registered three wins. “The win has opened the doors of prosperity for farmers, employment for youth and better days for the poor,” he said. The cricketerturned-politician said the polls were a “battle of truth” which have laid the foundation for a change on political front in the country in 2019. He, however, sounded a word of caution for the partymen and claimed the Congress will not become complacent despite the victory.

Earlier he was member of the Fifteenth Finance Commission of India.

RBI autonomy sacred, should not be compromised, says former CEA Subramanian Mumbai : With the reigns of RBI (Reserve Bank of India) governorship passing to an ex-bureaucrat, former chief economic advisor Arvind Subramanian Wednesday said central bank autonomy is “sacred”, which should not be compromised. Progress on the steps taken by Governor Shaktikanta Das’ predecessor Urjit Patel to restore financial system integrity will be a key thing to assess any damage to the institution. “What is going to be key is whether this

(restoring financial system agenda) is maintained going forward. That is going to be the yardstick to measure what is happening on the bigger institutional front,” he said, speaking at the Fifth India Economic Conclave here. “RBI has a very good reputation for very good reasons (and) maintaining the functional autonomy in decisionmaking and governance is absolutely sacred, we must not compromise on that,” he added.

Macron just doesn’t get it

The sorry truth is that both progressives and neoliberals still don’t get it and that seems to be true in France most of all. Since the election of President Emmanuel Macron in 2017, I have read or heard that he is the leader of the free world, the hope for Europe and a model for the US. Instead, he increasingly seems to be a wellmeaning guy who has been elected in the wrong historical era. From the beginning, I’ve been a supporter of Macron and his desire to extend economic globalization. But here’s the problem: The West is experiencing a loss of relative status due to diminished power and influence. Western societies, including France, are being transformed by immigration beyond what many of their native-born citizens had expected. The rising prominence of terror, migration and security issues have boosted some of the less salubrious sides of the right wing. Add to that mix wage stagnation and the increasingly common view—held by 91% in France—that today’s children will not have better lives than their parents. Finally, the decline of organized religion, especially pronounced in Western Europe, has created a spiritual vacuum and a crisis of meaning. In response, people want something beyond more income redistribution (what the left is offering) or more globalization (what the pre-populist right used to offer). People want ideas and inspiration, and when no good new ideasare put forward, the current default seems to be nationalist ideas, including of the less tolerant variety. Macron doesn’t have any new ideas or vision, however much you might like the old ideas he has embraced. So, however promising it might have seemed at first, his tenure has accelerated the collapse of the traditional European liberal order. For some time, his approval ratings in France have been lower than those of US President Donald Trump. If you doubt the lack of inspiration, consider Macron’s response to the protests, outlined in his recently televised speech. In lieu of ideas, or for that matter cold-hearted technocracy, he served up abject financial pandering. He promised to boost the minimum wage by €100 per month, but at no cost to employers. He also promised no taxes or charges on overtime in 2019, and he requested employers to pay year-end bonuses, which would be tax-exempt, and he cancelled the charges on some pensions. Some of those may be acceptable changes. However, when you throw money at protesters, you are likely to get more protests and rising demands. Buying off the opposition works best when it is not explicitly framed as such.

As Priyanka Chopra’s maiden Sikkimese production, Pahuna, gears up for release.

‘Children are worst affectedby violence’ Mumbai: When you embark on a project that is close to your heart, you will move mountains to make it a success. And director Paakhi Tyrewala not only moved mountains but also spent a lot of time in them for her Sikkimese film, Pahuna: The Little Visitors. The film, which enjoyed its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival last year, already has a trophy under its belt as it won the Best Film (Jury’s Choice) Award at the SCHLINGEL International Children’s Film Festival in Germany this year. Now, as it makes an appearance in theatres

closer home, Paakhi lets us in on all that went on behind the scenes. The film has been funded in part by the Sikkim Government, Children’s Film Society, India and Priyanka Chopra’s Purple Pebble Pictures. “I had approached about nine or 10 people before I reached Priyanka. It’s great that she liked the film and supported it,” says Paakhi. Although one gets to see beautiful, verdant landscapes in the film, Pahuna’s plotline is not as tranquil for it tells the story of three children who are forced to leave their village in Nepal and flee to Sikkim in order to escape

violence. On getting separated from their parents, the little ones have to fend for themselves and find themselves vulnerable to the whims of fate. But when questioned about the cause of the violence, Paakhi chooses to not dwell on this topic. “I didn’t want to show what the violence was all about, and what drives the villagers away from the land, as violence can happen because of many reasons; it can be communal, religious, caste-based, political or even because of land grabbing. The point is that children are worst affected by violence. In

Hockey World Cup 2018: Australia beat France 3-0 to progress to semi-finals

Australia are well on course to create a rare history as they defeated France 3-0 to progress to the semi-finals. New Delhi : Two-time defending champions Australia are well on course to create a rare history as they defeated France 3-0 to progress to the semi-finals of the men’s hockey World Cup on Wednesday. World no.1 Australia scored all their goals from penalty corners through Jeremy Hayward (4th minute), Blake Govers (19th) and skipper Aran Zalewski (37th) at the Kalinga Stadium. However, the final scoreline was far from convincing from Australia’s point of view, especially against a side which ranked lowest in the tournament at 20th. The Frenchmen played

good hockey in bits and pieces but were undone by the Kookaburras’ vast experience and skills. Despite the loss, the Frenchmen would return home with pride, especially with the superb show here that includes a shocking win over Olympic champions Argentina in the pool stages. Australia will play the winner of Thursday’s last quarter-final between India and Netherlands in the semi-finals on Saturday. Four minutes into the match, Australia earned their first penalty corner when the ball found Francois Goyet’s foot and Hayward made no mistake in converting the opportunity to hand his side the early lead.

Kulgam : A money-order sent by a farmer in Maharashtra’s Nashik district, who had got a princely sum of Rs 1,064 after selling 750 kg of onions, has been returned by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Sanjay Sathe, a farmer from Niphad tehsil of Nashik district, had sent Rs 1,064, his earnings from onion sale in the wholesale market, to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on November 29 as a protest. A few days ago, the local post office informed him that the moneyorder was not accepted. “I went to the office of India Post in Niphad Monday and received the amount of Rs 1,064,” Sathe told PTI Wednesday.

“My only intention was to prompt the government to take some steps to ease the financial stress farmers are suffering from because of the crashed prices,” he said. Sathe, who had taken his onion crop to Niphad wholesale market, had received a paltry rate of Rs 1.40 per kg. His act of donating the money to the disaster relief fund of the PMO by making a moneyorder had made headlines. “I wanted to draw the government’s attention to our problems. I am not associated with any political party,” he said. “I hope the Union and state governments will take some steps so that onion growers earn more,” he said.

The Statue of Unity of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is located in Gujarat’s Narmada district and to reach it, one has to reach Kevadiya first. “During the first 11 days of its opening, the monument has already been visited by around 1.3 lakh tourists. This is great news for tourism in the state. However, this area is plagued by connectivity issues and we needed to address that. This will be a modern railway station and

will see huge footfall. Other than a boost in tourism, the project will lead to development in the area, create employment among other things,” a source said. Currently, there is no direct air or train connectivity to Kevadiya. The nearest stations to Kevadiya are Vadodara (71.94 km), Bharuch (75.36 km) and Ankleshwar

international Why Vietnam could be Asia’s biggest trade war winner

Vietnam : In the race to lure companies looking for alternative sites amid the US-China trade war, Vietnam wields a slew of advantages over its rivals. Vietnam was ranked No. 1 among seven emerging Asian countries as manufacturing destinations by Natixis SA, which looked at demographics, wages and electricity costs, rankings in doing business and logistics, and manufacturing as a share of total foreign direct investment. “Vietnam is poised to capture some of China’s global market share in labour-intensive manufacturing,” said Trinh Nguyen, a senior economist at Natixis in Hong Kong. “It’s the clear winner from the trade war.” Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc is taking advantage of trade tensions to boost the nation’s profile as a manufacturing and export powerhouse, selling everything from shoes to smartphones. Trade amounts to about twice its gross domestic product — more than any country in Asia apart from Singapore. Production workers in Vietnam are paid an average of $216 a month, less than half what their peers get in China. Thanks to government subsidies, electricity is also cheaper at 7 US cents per kilowatt hour compared with 10 cents for Indonesia and 19 cents for the Philippines, according to GlobalPetrolPrices.com’s June data.

Sri Lanka: Ousted PM Ranil Wickremesinghe proves majority in parliament

New Delhi : Weeks after being sacked by President Maithripala Sirisena, Sri Lanka’s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe proved his majority in Parliament Wednesday, with 117 out of 225 lawmakers voting to pass a confidence motion in his leadership. The vote could hamper President Sirisena’s controversial move to install ex-strongman Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Prime Minister, removing incumbent Wickremesinghe on October 26. The move had

triggered uncertainty in the country’s politics, plunging it down into chaos. Rajapaksa has so far failed to prove his majority in Parliament. Sirisena, after sacking Wickremesinghe, dissolved Parliament and called for a snap election on January 5. However, the Supreme Court overturned his decision. The main Tamil minority party TNA today voted in favour of the confidence motion. However, the Marxist JVP, which has protested Sirisena’s extra-constitutional action, abstained from voting.

‘Women in Japan need to come out on the UK’s Theresa May wins Conservative Party streets like Indian women do’ vote of confidence by 200 to 117

Seoul : Last year, in a strikingly rare case, Shiori Ito (29) publicly accused a prominent journalist of drugging and raping her. The muted response to her moving story and a significant backlash on social media forced her to relocate. But, Ito, who now works as a journalist in London, is still credited with enabling conversations about sexual assault back home. As India reckons with an outpouring of sexual misconduct cases, Ito spoke to The Indian Express at the Third Asian Investigative Journalism Conference in Seoul in October about her experience of going public with her story. Edited excerpts: I really admire what is happening in India. The horrible incident of 2012 (Delhi gangrape), I think, contributed to a lot of change. Women in Japan do not come out (for a cause) the way Indian women do. Social activism is not popular in Japan. In fact, one of the biggest protests we had recently was when our Prime Minister attempted to change the Article 9 of

our Constitution (which bans maintenance of armed forces). When it comes to gender discrimination and sexual violence, I feel there are amazing things happening in your country. Japan needs more women to come out on the streets like in the US and India. That’s something we are missing. Japan is one of the world’s most organised countries and yet when it comes to sexual assault, there’s literally no support (for the victims). Because this topic (conversations about rape) was so taboo, I realised that (speaking out) was the only way (to break the silence). I remember my sister kept asking me ‘why does it have to be you’. My father didn’t want me to talk about it. My family was scared of what could happen afterwards because the man I accused was popular. But someone had to do it. I’m so glad the MeToo movement happened shortly after I spoke up as it helped my family understand that I was not the only one speaking out.

London : Prime Minister Theresa May won a confidence vote from her party on Wednesday but 117 of her lawmakers said she was no longer the right leader to implement Britain’s exit from the European Union. May had needed 159 votes for the simple majority to win the vote. Britain’s March 29 exit has been plunged into crisis by parliamentary opposition to the divorce deal she struck with the EU last month, which has opened up possibilities including a delay to Brexit or even another referendum on membership. May on Monday cancelled a parliamentary vote on the deal, which is designed to maintain close future ties with the EU, after it became clear she would lose it. Eurosceptic critics

of the deal within her own party triggered a no-confidence vote in her leadership on Tuesday, hours after she returned from talks with European leaders aimed at winning additional assurances about her deal. After two hours of voting in Committee Room 14 in the House of Commons, Graham Brady, chairman of the 1922 Committee of Conservative backbenchers, said 200 Conservative lawmakers had voted in support of May as leader, and 117 against. May, who voted to remain in the EU in the 2016 referendum, had warned opponents of her withdrawal deal – struck after two years of negotiations – that if they toppled her, Brexit would be delayed or stopped.
