Body brought to Indore ashram; thousands of followers, top politicians arrive INDORE: Bhayyuji Maharaj will be cremated at Indore’s Suryoday Ashram on Wednesday, when the spiritual guru used to meet his followers. Bhayyuji’s 18-year-old daughter Kuhu is expected to perform the last rites, however, clear details have not been shared by the family or the Suryoday Ashram. A large number of supporters mourning his death will join the final march as his mortal remains are taken to his native village. Bhayyuji committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon by allegedly shooting himself in the head, leaving his followers stunned. In his suicide note he said, “Somebody should be there to handle duties of family. I am leaving, to much stressed out. Fed up (sic).” Bhayyuji was immensely popular across Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. His followers included top political leaders and Bollywood celebs. Political leaders cutting across party lines expressed shock and grief over the “untimely” death of spiritual guru. Union minister Nitin Gadkari, Chief Ministers Shivraj Singh Chouhan and Devendra Fadnavi, Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray are some of the leaders who tweeted on his demise. Bhayyuji Maharaj, whose original name was Uday Singh Deshmukh, was one of the five ‘saints’ to whom the Shivraj Singh government in Madhya Pradesh had granted Minister of State (MoS) rank in April.

New Delhi : Dropping hints that a grand alliance of opposition parties ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections could not be ruled out, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said a “mahagathbandhan” to stop the Modi juggernaut was a sentiment of the people and not just political parties. Gandhi’s statement comes hours before the Congress’ Iftar party, which in the past has often been its extended platform to engage with ‘like-minded political parties’. “It is the sentiment of the people and not just political parties which are opposed to the BJP, to have a ‘mahagathbandhan’ that can take on the BJP, the RSS and Prime Minister Narendra Modi,” Gandhi said in Mumbai, where he has been camping for the past two days, holding meetings with Congress legislators and party corporators. However, the Congress chief remained mum when asked by reporters who would lead the grand

New Delhi : Following its win in Rajarajeshwari Nagar and now in Jayanagar, Congress has increased its tally to 79 in the 224-member Karnataka assembly. Even though Congress had won 78 seats after the results were declared on May 15 following the state elections, its strength in the assembly was reduced to 77 after the death of its Jamkhandi MLA Siddu B Nyamagouda. Nyamagouda, who was on his way to Goa, died on May 28 after a truck rammed into his car near Tulasigeri. The Congress-JD(S) alliance now commands a strength of 117 in the 223-member Karnataka assembly with the support of lone BSP MLA from Kollegala N Mahesh, comfortably placed ahead of the halfway mark. The HD Devegowda-led JD(S) has 37 MLAs. The BJP, which emerged as the single largest party after the Karnataka elections, has 104 MLAs along with the support of two independents.

High profile guru Bhaiyyuji Maharaj takes his own life

In an apparent suicide, spiritual leader Bhaiyyuji Maharaj was on Tuesday found dead with a gunshot wound in his temple at his Silver Spring Colony residence in Indore. In a short note believed to be left behind by him, Bhaiyyuji talked about stress and being fed up with life, but did not spell out a reason for the same. The 50-year-old was a former model and worked as a marketing executive before taking to preaching, a calling that gave him immense clout and a following cutting across political lines, mostly in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra.

alliance of the opposition parties and turned his focus on attacking PM Modi and BJP.

Alleging that the ruling party was attacking the Constitution and curbing freedom of other institutions, leading to questions being asked from different quarters, Gandhi said Congress was trying to get these voices on a common platform. “Prime Minister Modi and the BJP are attacking the Constitution and institutions of the nation. The question faced by the people is how to stop this.

Capitalism’s triple whammy for the working class

The crisis of 2008 is supposed to have heralded an end to the dominance of capital over labour. It has not turned out that way. In fact, things have become worse for the working class. It is a triple whammy for them now. Last week, in his recent Monetary Authority of Singapore lecture in Singapore, Raghuram Rajan mentioned that the physical distance between a bank branch and its clients has been rising over time. It peaked before the crisis of 2008 and crashed, and then has been creeping higher again. The study pertains to the US. Banks give loans to all comers as competition forces them to take on unfamiliar risk, and it is then offloaded to other counterparties who are even further removed from the client. No monitoring or handholding. No surprises that banks get into trouble with their assets; they lose value; and the bank creditors are then bailed out by taxpayers. That is how “bullshit” jobs are created. Modern capitalism creates plenty of “bullshit” jobs (the allusion is to the book by that name by David Graeber) as greed sends investors, firms and corporations off to faraway lands and makes them deal with unfamiliar counterparties domestically as well. The absence of trust— obviously difficult to establish easily or quickly when dealing with strangers—results in multiple checks, counter-checks, verifications, referrals, know your customer certifications, etc. So, that is the first whammy for workers. They are in jobs that they do not find meaningful, nor do such jobs make a difference to the world. The second whammy is that not only are they in “bullshit” jobs, but these jobs are now “contracted” out with substantial reductions in pay and benefits. Even as India is trying to formalize its workforce, we hear that America is furiously paddling in the opposite direction. A well-researched article in Politico (“The Real Future Of Work”, January/February 2018) points to the fact that in a couple of sectors, the extent of “informalisation” of the workforce is more than 50%. They are euphemistically referred to as “alternative work arrangements”. For the economy overall, it is still not a pervasive thing but the trend is in the wrong direction. Arms-length capitalism and greed are not done with immiserating workers. There is another whammy. The third whammy that is still coming is the introduction of technology that renders workers redundant or expects them to constantly upgrade themselves with no guarantee of rewards in the end. Workers are in a perpetual race with technology and fellow workers (not to mention job seekers) to remain relevant to the employer. It is taking a toll. Populism and/or social unrest have been the consequences. This is already evident. But there is no sign yet that workers are better off. Either it is early days or the populists are not really in it to help restore balance between labour and capital. There is a danger in proposing “arms-around” capitalism as an alternative to armslength capitalism. For some, the other name for “arms-around” capitalism is cronyism. That is not what I am advocating. Cronyism is different from relationship or “arms-around” capitalism.

Varun says he’s scared when offered biopics, reveals on whom he’d like to make one work.” Despite his views on biographies, the actor has never shied away from experimenting with roles. Post the success of Judwaa 2, in which he played twins, Raja and Prem, the actor was seen in Shoojit Sircar’s October, where he plays a hotel-management intern dedicated to caring for a critically injured friend. The actor also reveals that, if he ever had to do a biography, he would like to play his father, David Dhawan, on screen. He says, “I think if I have to do a biopic on someone, though I have never got an offer before, but, in my head, the idea is to do a biography of my father maybe, one day.”

New Delhi: Varun Dhawan is one of the highest paid actors in showbiz and will be seen next in Kalank. The actor has an interesting take on a trend that seems to have gripped Bollywood, that is of making biographies. The actor says, “I get scared when I am offered any biography. Most of the time, I don’t want to do it because even when I play fictional characters, I treat them as biographies.” Varun likes to infuse an element of reliability and realism in his characters. He says, “I am playing a tailor in Sui Dhaga. It’s not based on a particular person, but it’s based on my observations of common people and how they go to

The epic period drama, produced by Karan Johar and directed by Abhishek Varman, has been on the floors with one portion of the cast and now, Sonakshi is all set to join in and make her mark. “Kalank has garnered immense audience interest for its astounding star cast which includes Sanjay Dutt, Madhuri Dixit, Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, and Aditya Roy Kapur. Talking about Sonakshi’s role in the films, the source adds, “She will shoot for her portion of Kalank through the Mumbai schedule at an elaborate set constructed in Andheri. While not much can be revealed about her role and her look, one can definitely expect Sonakshi to be seen donning an entirely different look altogether, unlike any of her previous cinematic outings.” While Sonakshi remained unavailable for comment, her spokesperson confirmed her having joined the principal shooting of the film in Mumbai without divulging any further details.

New Delhi: “Our business is our business, none of your business” became viral with the release of Race 3 trailer and actor Daisy Shah is happy that it has become such a rage on social media. The 33-year-old actor says her co-star Salman Khan is the happiest and the dialogue is so popular now that it has seeped into her day-to-day life. “We never thought that this dialogue would be taken by the audience so well. It’s really fun when people give their own version to my dialogue. It has also seeped into my house like if I have a conversation with my sister, she is like, ‘Dude, it is my business none of your business’. I am like ok fine,” she told PTI. “I feel really happy about the response. But knowing what is going around my dialogue, it is Salman who is the happiest. So, I am happy in that.” Daisy, who made her debut opposite Salman in Jai Ho, says she never asked for work from the actor but he has always been a mentor to her. “I never told Salman I want work. When the

right project comes, along he will be the first person to come and tell you. Salman makes sure that everyone grows along with him. “He is not somebody who will step on your shoulder and move ahead, he will make sure that whoever is with him, he/she should grow with him and that is the best thing about him.” Daisy says she plays a multi-layered character in Race 3, which hits the screen this Friday. The film also gave her a chance to do action sequences for the first time. “We hardly used body doubles anywhere. Me and Jacky (Jacqueline Fernandez) trained hard for the scenes. “I trained in kickboxing, a bit of martial arts and the aerial training. A lot of hard work has gone into it and now looking on the big screen, it seems that it has paid-off really well,” she said. From being an assistant choreographer to acting in films, Daisy is a firm believer in destiny and is glad to have a mentor like Salman Khan by her side. Daisy said, “I never thought about acting.

New Delhi: Former Junior Girls’ chess Champion Soumya Swaminathan pulled out of Asian Team Chess Championship scheduled to be held from July 26 to August 4 in Iran. Swaminathan took the bold decision due to the compulsory rule of wearing a headscarf in the country. She made the announcement in a Facebook post. “I am feeling bad that I am not able to answer properly. I am unable to handle it,” she said when contacted by PTI for a comment. Talking about her decision, Soumya said that she believes in all religions and this is her

personal decision. “It was a personal decision and I have nothing more to add to it. I believe in all religions and follow their rules but you can’t force it outside religious places,” she explained. “When we go to a temple we leave our footwear outside out of respect. It is part of our culture. But can you make it compulsory in entire India outside temples? How will it work?” she asked. Soumya further added that religion and sport cannot be mixed and there should be no specific religious instructions in a sport. “Religion and sport cannot be mixed.

Bangalore : Former India pacer Zaheer Khan was felicitated by Adelaide Oval cricket ground on Saturday, during his visit to Australia with his wife Sagarika Ghatge. The felicitation program was attended by Darren Chandler, General Manager Marketing and Operations Adelaide Oval Stadium Management Authority, Minister Ridgway and his wife Meredith, Rodney Harrex, CE South Australian Tourism Commission and Raju Narayanan, Director of Indian Engagement for Government of SA.

Khan, who was honoured for his contribution to cricket, spent the day at the stadium. Speaking about his experiences, he said that he has fond memories of playing at Oval. “Adelaide Oval is a fantastic place to play cricket and I have fond memories at this stadium. I’ve always looked forward to the Adelaide leg of the trip on previous tours because it’s also one of the most unique destinations in Australia and there’s so much to discover here,” he said. He further added that he is happy to be recognised by the stadium.

Southampton : Tiger Woods is not necessarily the man to beat at the US Open this week but he is still the man everyone wants to see at Shinnecock Hills. The 14-times major champion played only nine holes on Tuesday, teeing off at the crack of dawn accompanied by last-start Memorial winner Bryson DeChambeau and world number one Dustin Johnson. He completed his work, did a little practice, spoke to the media and left the course to return to his luxury yacht at nearby Sag Harbor before the sun was even over the yardarm. But not before thousands of fans, at least those who avoided the traffic jams outside the course, had taken the chance to catch a glimpse of

one of sport’s most famous celebrities. Woods also remains a huge draw with the media and although he predictably said nothing noteworthy on Tuesday, he still drew a standing-room only audience at his news conference. Seats were easier to come by, however, when the game’s current crop of top players, including Johnson, Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Jason Day, paraded through the media centre. “I think everyone realises it’s different when he (Woods) turns up,” said former world number one Day, no longer in awe of Woods the person after nearly a decade on tour, but still in awe of his achievements, which include 79 PGA Tour victories.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale’s future and more; what waits for Julen Lopetegui at Real Madrid Bangalore : Spain manager Julen Lopetegui was named by Real Madrid as Zinedine Zidane’s successor on Tuesday, however what awaits the club’s former player and reserve team coach when he takes over after the World Cup in Russia? The dust had barely settled on Real’s third-consecutive Champions League win last month when Cristiano Ronaldo declared: “It has been beautiful to play for Real Madrid,” sparking fears within the La Liga side that he had decided to leave. While still at the club, local media reports that he remains unhappy and that promises made to him have not been fulfilled, however it is not the first time he has made noises about leaving. “Cristiano is one of the best players

of all-time, there’s no doubt about it,” Lopetegui said in a recent interview. Whether his admiration for the player will be enough to keep him there remains to be seen. While the departure of Zidane will have upset many members of the Madrid side, it is unlikely that Gareth Bale will have shed too many tears. After his matchwinning display in Kiev, Bale said he wanted more regular first team football and whether that came in Madrid or away from it was something that would need to be assessed over the close season. The 51-year-old now has to decide whether or not to proceed with the Welshman, who was often overlooked for Isco and Karim Benzema by Zidane. Unfortunately for Bale, Lopetegui is a

known admirer of Isco’s and having given Marco Asensio his first full cap at international level obviously rates the youngster, too. As a former goalkeeper himself, who made one appearance for Real in a 3-3 draw away to great rivals Atletico, Lopetegui will be faced with a familiar situation at the Bernabeu. Zidane was a staunch defender of Keylor Navas and vetoed a deal to bring Athletic Bilbao’s Kepa to the club in January, despite Florentino Perez, the Madrid president, setting up the move. With the Spanish media linking them with moves for AS Roma’s Alisson and Chelsea’s Thibaut Courtois, Lopetegui must decide whether to stick or twist regarding Navas.

Teesta Setalvad bail plea hearing continues in Gujarat High Court

Ahmedabad : The Gujarat High Court will on Wednesday continue hearing the anticipatory bail plea of Mumbai-based activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand in connection with the alleged case of embezzlement of central government’s fund of Rs 1.4 crore. Their counsel Mihir Thakore argued that not only was the FIR lodged by Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch out its jurisdiction,

but that the contents of the FIR are false. He said the funds were meant for Maharashtra and had nothing to do with Gujarat, but still the case was registered in Ahmedabad. He also argued that notice was sent to his clients who appeared before the Crime Branch and produced all relevant materials, hence there was no need for custodial interrogation. The government prosecutor will argue on Wednesday.

Coast Guard rescues 7 crew stranded on a drifting tug off Gujarat coast Ahmedabad : Seven crew members of a tug “Jalarakh”, stranded for hours mid-sea, were airlifted to safety by the helicopters of the Indian Coast Guard near the Gujarat coast on Wednesday. The tug was travelling from Veraval to Sikka, when its fuel lines burst, resulting in loss of engine power. The tug raised a distress alert to the Coast Guard headquarters at Porbandar at 12:45 am. Due to prevailing extreme weather conditions, the tug started drifting towards land, southwest of Porbandar harbour. Assistance was also sought from other tugs in the Porbandar harbour. However, they could not be deployed due to the prevailing weather conditions, a statement from the defence spokesperson stated here. In the meantime, the Coast Guard ship “Shoor”

The situation worsened with the tug drifting to shallow waters where the Coast Guard ship could not venture. The towing mission had to be aborted, but the ship continued to remain in the vicinity of the tug. At first light, Coast Guard helicopters were flown from the Porbandar air enclave.

Gujarat: 4 booked for raping woman in Valsad

On Monday evening, a group of five men including Abhishek arrived near Kathiriya’s home in Nana Varachha and attacked him after

calling him outside of his home. They punched Kathiriya and injured him in lower back with a knife. Kathiriya did not suffer major injury in the attack. Kathiriya was attacked due to dispute between his younger brother and the accused. international A look at North Korea’s human rights abuses Donald Trump played down

Seoul : It was just months ago when President Donald Trump used his first State of the Union address to condemn the cruelty of North Korea’s government. But after his historic summit on Tuesday with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, whom he described as “very smart” and having a “great personality,” Trump seemed to play down the severity of human rights violations in North Korea. “It’s rough,” Trump allowed after being asked about North Korea’s human rights record. He then said: “It’s rough in a lot of places, by the way. Not just there.” Few expected Trump to seriously raise North Korea’s horrific human rights problems during his first meeting with Kim, which was mainly about addressing the threat of Pyongyang’s nuclear weapons. Still, his postsummit comments drew an angry reaction from activists, who have spent years highlighting North Korea’s extensive crimes against humanity.

Senate will not ‘poke the bear’ Trump by passing tariff measure: Lawmaker

Washington : US Senator Bob Corker accused his fellow Republicans of being afraid to stand up to President Donald Trump on Tuesday, as his legislation to block the president’s ability to impose tariffs on national security grounds hit a roadblock in Congress.“‘We might poke the bear’ is the language I have been hearing in the hallways,” Corker said in an emotional Senate speech. “The president might get upset with us as United States senators if we vote on the Corker amendment, so we’re going to do everything we can to block it.” Corker and other lawmakers – Democrats as well as some of Trump’s fellow Republicans – introduced the measure last week after the president’s recent announcement that he was considering tariffs on automobiles, after imposing tariffs on steel and aluminum, citing national security concerns.

Robert Mueller’s team worries Russia could use court case to spy on probe

Washington : Special counsel Robert Mueller’s team is worried that Russian intelligence services will use a criminal case in Washington to gather information about its investigation and US intelligence-gathering methods. In court papers filed on Wednesday, prosecutors are asking a federal judge to impose limits on the information that can be shared by attorneys in the first criminal case directly related to Russian attempts to interfere in the 2016 US presidential election. So far, only one defendant, Concord Management and Consulting LLC, has appeared in the case, and prosecutors say they’re worried information they provide to the company’s attorneys could end up in the hands of other defendants or Russian spy agencies. The government “has particularised concerns about discovery in this case being disclosed to Russian intelligence services,” prosecutors write, noting that disclosure of information they plan to share with the company’s attorneys could compromise ongoing and future national security investigations. Prosecutors also want to bar other defendants from accessing the materials turned over in the case until they appear in a US court.
