Pakistan to file countermemorial in Kulbhushan Jadhav case on July 17

New Delhi: Pakistan is expected to file a second counter-memorial in the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on July 17, on the conviction of retired Indian naval officer Kulbhushan Jadhav, who was sentenced to death in April 2017 on charges of espionage and terrorism. Pakistan’s top attorney, Khawar Qureshi, had briefed caretaker Prime Minister Nasirul Mulk last week, sources told The Express Tribune. Attorney General for Pakistan, Khalid Javed Khan, and other senior officials also attended the meeting. According to sources, after the submission of the second counter-memorial, the ICJ will fix the case for hearing. On April 17, India submitted a fresh set of pleadings in the ICJ. The pleadings were filed in response to Pakistan’s submissions to the court. It may be recalled that India first approached the court on May 8, last year, for egregious violations of the provisions of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, 1963, by Pakistan in the matter. The court, on May 18, 2017, indicated provisional measures as requested by India and passed an order obligating Pakistan not to carry out the sentence that was awarded to Jadhav through a farcical trial by Pakistan.

Digvijaya compares PM Modi to controversial Pakistani leader Zia-ul-Haq Bhopal: After Shashi Tharoor’s controversial ‘Hindu Pakistan’ remark, another Congress leader has raked up a row by comparing Prime Minister Narendra Modi with controversial Pakistani leader Zia-ul-Haq. In a scathing attack on the Prime Minister Modi-led government in Centre, Digvijaya Singh said that the ruling party is promoting religious extremism in the country. Pointing out that extremism leads to terrorism, Singh said that a similar kind of religious extremism is being promoted under Prime Minister Modi’s governance in India as done by former Pakistani dictator Zia-ul-Haq that led

to a spurt in neighbouring country Pakistan. “Extremism leads to terrorism. Religious extremism as promoted by Zia-ul-Haq in Pakistan led to a spurt in terrorism there. There is religious extremism being promoted by ruling government in India, the so-called Hindutva, this is a similar dangerous trend,” Digvijaya Singh told the media. Citing an example of Pakistan governance during Zia-ulHaq’s tenure, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister added, “In Pakistan, Zia-ul-Haq started giving importance to bodies like Jamaat-E-Islami. Ever since he started supporting bodies like Taliban, Pakistan has more terror activities taking place than India.

Europe’s remarkable ability to remain in denial

Europe’s establishment is luxuriating in two recent announcements that would have been momentous even if they were only partly accurate: the end of Greece’s debt crisis, and a Franco-German accord to redesign the eurozone. Unfortunately, both reports offer fresh proof of the European Union (EU) establishment’s remarkable talent for never missing an opportunity to miss an opportunity. The two announcements did not come in the same week by accident. The Greek debt implosion, back in 2010, was the ugly symptom of the eurozone’s design flaws, which is why it triggered a domino effect across the continent. Greece’s continuing insolvency reflects the deep disagreements within the Franco-German axis concerning eurozone redesign. While three French presidents and the same German chancellor were failing to agree on the institutional changes that would render the eurozone sustainable, Greece was asked to bleed quietly. In 2015, the Greeks staged a rebellion, which Europe’s establishment ruthlessly crushed. Neither Brexit nor the EU’s steady delegitimation in the eyes of European voters managed to convince the establishment to change its ways. French President Emmanuel Macron’s election seemed the last hope for the new Berlin-Paris accord needed to prevent a suffocating Italy from triggering the next—this time lethal—domino effect. Under Macron, new, hopeful ideas were proposed: a common budget for the eurozone; a new safe debt instrument and quasi-federal tax-raising capacities; a common unemployment insurance fund; common bank deposit insurance and a common pot from which to recapitalize failing banks. Moreover, a new investment fund would mobilize idle savings across Europe, without adding to the fiscal stress of member states. A year later, with Italy on a collision course with the EU, the Meseberg Summit between German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Macron delivered an agreement on eurozone reform. A few days later, the Eurogroup of eurozone finance ministers delivered its own “solution to the Greek debt crisis. In a decent universe, these two announcements would herald the end of a lost decade for Europe and the beginning of an era of rebuilding so that Europeans may face, together, the challenges posed by US President Donald Trump and the next economic downturn. Alas, that is not the universe we inhabit. Even before the Meseberg Summit, Macron had diluted his proposals to the point of surrender. The common bank deposit insurance scheme and the recapitalization fund were pushed into an implausible future in which the eurozone periphery’s banks have to shed their bad loans before a proper banking union is forged.

FBI agent angrily rejects charges of bias at chaotic hearing

Washington : An FBI agent whose anti-Trump text messages fueled suspicions of partisan bias said at a bitterly contentious and occasionally chaotic hearing in Congress on Thursday that his work has never been tainted by politics, angrily rejecting Republican allegations that he set out to stop Donald Trump from becoming president. Peter Strzok testified publicly for the first time since being removed from special counsel Robert Mueller’s team, telling lawmakers that texts he traded with an FBI lawyer in the run-up to the 2016 presidential election reflected personal views that he never once acted on. “At no time, in any of those texts, did those personal beliefs ever enter into the realm of any action I took,” Strzok said. He insisted under aggressive questioning that an August 2016 text in which he said “We’ll stop” a Trump presidency followed Trump’s denigration of the family of a dead US service member.

Australia govt releases report to boost economic ties with India

Melbourne : Australia has released a report on its economic strategy for India recommending that India should be put into its top three export markets and made the third largest destination in Asia for the country’s outward investment. The report titled ‘An India Economic Strategy to 2035’ — authored by former Australian high commissioner to India Peter Varghese — was welcomed by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull Thursday. The report said it would see Australian exports to India grow from 14.9 billion dollars in 2017 to around 45 billion dollars in the next 20 year, and outward Australian investment to India rise from 10.3 billion dollars to over the 100-billion mark, reflecting a transformational expansion of the relationship. The report noted that the opportunities, however, would not fall into the country’s lap and that the government would require a sharper national focus on India, an unambiguous commitment by Australian business and a deeper understanding by both government and business of the magnitude of what is unfolding in an Indian marketplace which will only get more crowded. “They will also require an approach to the investment relationship with India that markedly differs from the trajectory of Australian investment in most other Asian markets,” the report said. The foundations for an enhanced economic partnership with India are strong, underpinned by people-to-people ties and shared values, it said.
