BJP inaugurating projects in UP as Lok Sabha election are near, says BSP chief Mayawati New Delhi : Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati, Saturday took a jibe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over Purvanchal Expressway, and said that had the PM laid the foundation in 2014, he would have been instead inaugurating it today. The comments came moments after the prime minister targetted her alliance with Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav. “Had they (BJP) done this in 2014 itself, then instead of laying foundation today, he would’ve been inaugurating it,” Mayawati was quoted as saying by ANI. Attacking the alliance of Akhilesh and Mayawati, Modi said that people who once could never stand the sight of each other, are together. “Those who didn’t even like looking at each other earlier, are now chanting Modi Modi. These people, out on bail, & the dynast parties now want to create obstacles on your path to development,” Modi said in a speech at Azamgarh. PM Modi who is on a two-day visit to UP, laid the foundation stone of 340 km-long Purvanchal Expressway in Azamgarh and later dedicated projects worth Rs 937 crore to Varanasi.

PM Modi attacks Rahul on triple talaq, asks if Congress is a party only for Muslim men

Rahul Gandhi on Sacred Games row: My father lived, died for India, no ‘character’ can change that

New Delhi : After laying the foundation stone of Purvanchal Expressway, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday shot a volley of questions at Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his party’s opposition to the triple talaq, which is yet to be passed in the Rajya Sabha. Addressing a rally at Azamgarh, the constituency of Samajwadi Party founder Mulayam Singh Yadav, Modi said he was not surprised in ‘Mr Namdaar‘ claiming they are a Muslim party. The PM also questioned Gandhi if the Congress merely belonged to Muslim men or did it belong to Muslim women as well.

New Delhi : Amid several petitions in courts against Netflix series Sacred Games, alleging that it harmed the reputation of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Saturday said the views of a character in a fictional web series can never change the fact that his father lived and died in the service of India. “My father lived and died in the service of India. The views of a character on a fictional web series can never change that,” Gandhi tweeted tagging Sacred Games. However, the Congress chief said he believed in the freedom of expression and unlike BJP/RSS, he thought “freedom is a fundamental

Describing Chouhan as one of the most successful chief ministers, the party chief dared the Opposition party to counter BJP’s claims about development with facts.

BJP’s roots run deeper than ‘paatal’ in Madhya Pradesh, will be impossible for Congress to win, says Amit Shah Bhopal : Taunting the Congress for dreaming to form the government in Madhya Pradesh, BJP chief Amit Shah on Saturday asserted that it was impossible to defeat his party in the state because its “roots run deeper than paatal (hell)”. Shah, who was in Ujjain to flag off Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Jan Ashirwad Yatra, described Madhya Pradesh as a tapobhoomi of Kushabhau Thakre and Rajmata Scindia. He claimed that by the time Chouhan finished his yatra, the party would be in a position to get more than 200 seats in the assembly elections due in

November. Describing Chouhan as one of the most successful chief ministers, the BJP chief dared the Opposition party to counter BJP’s claims about development with facts. He went on to assert that ‘kisanputra’ Shivraj Singh Chouhan would become the chief minister

again as opposed to the PCC chief Kamal Nath, who he called ‘dhanpati’ . The BJP president reeled off figures to claim that the Narendra Modi government had allocated two and a half times more money to Madhya Pradesh than the previous UPA government. He also talked about the recent increase in minimum support prices (MSP) for several crops. Shah further asserted that the BJP will again form the government at the Centre in 2019. Chief Minister Shivraj Chouhan also took a dig at the rival party and claimed that many in the Congress were hankering for the CM post.

democratic right”. “BJP/RSS believe the freedom of expression must be policed and controlled. I believe this freedom is a fundamental democratic right,” he said.A plea was filed in the Delhi High Court on Wednesday seeking removal of some “offensive scenes” from the Netflix series Sacred Games, alleging that some of its content were inappropriate and derogatory in nature and harmed the reputation of the former prime minister. Unfortunate, based on lies: BJP slams Mehbooba Mufti for her remark Mumbai: BJP National General Secretary Ram Madhav on Saturday hit back at Mehbooba Mufti and termed her statement on his party trying to break the PDP is “unfortunate and based on lies”. “What Mehbooba ji said yesterday is unfortunate and based on lies. No one in Delhi is trying to break their party. Instead of solving their internal conflicts they are blaming Delhi and threatening in the name of terrorism. As far as BJP is concerned, we are not trying to break any party,” the BJP leader told news agency ANI. The former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister on Friday warned the Centre that any attempt to weaken PDP by

causing defections will have dangerous consequences for the state as it will erode the trust of the Kashmiris in democracy and give birth to new militant leaders. “If Delhi intervenes and breaks our party, and makes Sajad Lone or whosoever the Chief Minister, it will erode the trust of the Kashmiris in Indian democracy. Any intervention from Delhi will be taken seriously,” Mufti had said. Responding to Salahuddin threat Madhav said, “As far as the threat over ‘Salahuddin’ is concerned, the Central government and security forces have the power to neutralise all the terrorists who are in the valley and those who might turn to terrorism due to Mehbooba ji.

A weak state problem, not a WhatsApp problem

Messaging app WhatsApp has responded to the horrific lynching in Maharastra’s Dhule district with a media blitz and a new feature that marks forwarded messages clearly. The former was inevitable given that the Centre has put it under the pump for the spate of recent lynchings fuelled by rumours spread via the app. The latter was in the works in any case. Doubtless, there are other measures the Facebook-owned app can and will implement. These will not, however, solve the problem. For that, the state will have to address the cause of the lynchings. WhatsApp is not it. In June 2007, Manoj Banwala and Babli were lynched by the latter’s family for marrying against the wishes of the khap panchayat of Karora village in Haryana. When a Karnal district court convicted the perpetrators and the khap head in 2010, it was the first time khap panchayats had been brought to account for their role in perpetrating honour killings. It would not, unfortunately, prove to be the decisive deterrent that it was hailed as at the time. Such honour killings continue. And the panchayats have continued to function as extra-constitutional authorities—enough so that in February this year, the Supreme Court had to warn them not to be the “conscience keepers of society”. In June 2017, Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared that “killing people in the name of gau bhakti is unacceptable”. This is so obvious a sentiment that it should scarcely need saying. Yet, it did. The spate of high-profile lynchings associated with cow vigilantes—from the Mohammed Akhlaq murder in 2015 to the Qasim lynching last month—continues. WhatsApp was not even a glint in eventual founders Jan Koum’s and Brian Acton’s eyes back in 2007. Nor was it a factor in the spate of honour killings that came to light during the United Progressive Alliance’s second term. It has played a role in the cow vigilante lynchings, but mob patrolling and police apathy have done as much. All of which is to say: It would be a mistake to look at the recent lynchings associated with child abduction scares and conclude that India has a WhatsApp problem. What it has is a weak state problem. For the state to maintain a monopoly on violence, the political elite must show the will to make it happen. They will do so if there are structural incentives for them. There aren’t. As we had noted after Modi’s declaration last year, the elevation of individual notions of justice over the constitutional ideal is a deep-rooted problem in the Indian polity. This creates political incentives to undercut the state’s monopoly on violence.

Janhvi’s co-star Ishaan Khatter, acting in his second film, kept his options open about doing a biopic in future. “I don’t think I can decide that myself. Asked if both budding actors felt pressurised by the challenge of matching up to Sairat, Janhvi said: “I watched Sairat before even shooting for this film and I loved it. “During the shoot, we did not think

about the film, we were more into our film. We tried to tell the same story from a different perspective. Our setting is different and both characters are vastly different. So we take the pressure as responsibility as we want to give Sairat the respect it deserves.” Ishaan, whose debut film was Beyond The Clouds by Majid Majidi, added that they were always ready to accept the challenge of re-making Sairat. “We were happy to take up the challenge. We knew there would be comparisons. But we never took it in a negative manner. It was more important to us that we tell the story in our own way.

Scarlett Johansson steps down from transgender role after backlash

New York : Scarlett Johansson on Friday withdrew from the film Rub & Tug after her plans to portray a transgender man prompted a backlash. In a statement to Out.com on Friday, Johansson said she’s pulling out from the project “in light of recent ethical questions raised surrounding my casting.” Last week, Johansson said she would star as Pittsburgh 1970s and ’80s prostitution ring leader Dante “Tex” Gill, who was born Lois Jean Gill but identified as a man. When transgender actors and advocates questioned the casting, Johansson initially responded with a statement

that criticism “can be directed to Jeffrey Tambor, Jared Leto and Felicity Huffman’s reps.” “Our cultural understanding of transgender people continues to advance, and I’ve learned a lot from the community since making my first statement about my casting and realize it was insensitive,” said Johansson, who added that she had “great admiration and love for the trans community.” “While I would have loved the opportunity to bring Dante’s story and transition to life, I understand why many feel he should be portrayed by a transgender person, and I am thankful that this casting debate.

England vs India, 2nd ODI: Joe Root, Liam Plunkett help hosts draw level

London: England cruised to a comfortable 86-run victory over India to keep the three-match series alive at Lord’s in London on Saturday. After winning the toss and electing to bat, Joe Root’s sizzling ton helped the hosts finish with 322-7 on board and in reply, the task proved too much for Virat Kohli’s men. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan got the visitors off to a steady start but just before they could hit a half-century stand, Mark Wood dismissed the former through a soft dismissal. Dhawan also departed in similar fashion and then Liam Plunkett

dealt another blow by removing the inform KL Rahul for a duck. Virat Kohli and Suresh Raina soaked the pressure with an 80-run stand but Eoin Morgan’s men kept the game in control. Spinners Adil Rashid and Moeen Ali combined to send the settled duo packing. MS Dhoni kept ploughing a lonely furrow as he kept losing partners at the end. Plunkett came into the attack and dismissed the veteran cricketer and from there on, wickets kept tumbling for the Men in Blue. With the series tied at 1-1, both sides will eye glory when they face each other in the series decider at Leeds on Tuesday.

PV Sindhu makes final of Thailand Open, Nozomi Okuhara awaits

Kevin Anderson topples marathon man John Isner in longest-ever Wimbledon semi-final Mumbai: It was a case of better late than never as Kevin Anderson reached his first Wimbledon final with a heart-stopping 7-6(6) 6-7(5) 6-7(9) 6-4 26-24 win over the sport’s perennial ultra marathon man John Isner on Friday. After being kept on the run for six hours and 36 minutes, the longest ever singles semi-final at the All England Club, how the 32-year-old was still standing was anyone’s guess. When it was all done and dusted, there were no wild roars, no fist pumping and no raised arms in celebration – all Anderson had left in him was to give Isner a sympathetic hug after he came out on top in the

second longest match ever contested at the All England Club. “I don’t know what to say right now. Just playing like that in those conditions was really tough on both of us. At the end you feel like it is a draw, but someone has to win,” a drained Anderson, who had sensationally beaten defending champion Roger Federer in another nail-biting five setter two days ago, said. “John is a great guy and I really feel for him. If I was on the opposite side I don’t know how you can take that playing for so long and coming out short… getting through something like that is quite different.

Mumbai: Olympic silver medallist PV Sindhu advanced into the women’s singles final after registering a hardfought victory over Indonesia’s Gregoria Mariska Tunjung at the USD 350,000 Thailand Open World Tour Super 500 tournament in Bangkok on Saturday. The second-seeded Indian continued her unbeaten run in the Thai capital with a 23-21 16-21 21-9 win over Tunjung in a match that lasted an hour. In what is expected to be a high-voltage summit showdown, Sindhu will lock horns with Nozomi Okuhara in a rematch of the last World Championship, in which the Japanese prevailed. The world no 3 Indian pipped Tunjung to win the first game that went down to the wire, separated by just two points. In the second game, Sindhu played with much

more variation and mixed things up to unsettle her opponent. She took a 9-5 lead on the back of some incredible netplay but squandered it as Tunjung reeled off four points to lead 11-9 at the lemon break. After trailing 10-16, Sindhu earned three consecutive points but it went in vain as she lost the game, thanks to a few errors. In the third, Sindhu displayed her class to outplay her opponent. She dominated proceedings from the start, rushing to a sizeable 5-1 lead. The Indian then ensured that Tunjung was unable to get back into the game, sealing it comfortably with a 21-9 drubbing. In the quarter-finals, Sindhu had eased past her Malaysian rival Soniia Cheah. Okuhara beat Beiwen Zhang 21-17 21-10 in her semifinal match.

Business India’s trade deficit widens to more than five-year high in June

New Delhi: India’s trade deficit widened to its highest in more than five years in June, the trade ministry said on Friday, driven largely by a surge in oil prices and a weaker rupee. Though merchandise exports rose 17.57 percent year-on-year in June, the trade deficit widened to $16.6 billion from $14.62 billion in May. Oil imports rose 56.61 per cent to $12.73 billion. The oil import bill of India, the world’s third biggest crude importer, rose sharply with global oil prices amid concerns that U S sanctions against Iran would remove a substantial volume of crude oil from the world markets. Washington, which had pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal with Iran, is pushing countries to halt imports of Iranian oil from November. India’s trade balance is further bruised by a weakening Indian rupee that hit an all-time low against the

dollar last month. The depreciating rupee and a widening trade deficit pose a challenge for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is aiming to boost economic growth ahead of national elections, due early next year. Late last month, Subhash Chandra Garg, the economic affairs secretary in the finance ministry, had said the trade deficit was expected to widen but the outlook was unclear. “We are not even certain what kind of a storm it is or even if it is a storm or whether it will turn out to be a storm,” Garg said. “Oil has played a spoilsport in both imports and exports. It has incrementally added $1.23 billion on imports and simultaneously a reduction in petroleum exports has been of $1.17 billion on month,” said Shubhada Rao, chief economist at Yes Bank Ltd in Mumbai.

Gold lost its glitter during the week, falls Rs 480 per 10 gm Mumbai: Tracking a weak cues from overseas market and easing demand from local jewellers, gold lost its glitter during the week and recorded a fall of Rs 480 to close at Rs 30,050 per ten grams at the bullion market during the week. Traders said sentiment turned bearish on the back of subdued global trend, as the dollar extended gains from the previous session when US inflation data and trade war concerns boosted demand for the greenback. Besides, fading demand from local jewellers and retailers at the domestic market, weighed on the gold prices. Silver slumped below the Rs 39,000-mark due to poor offtake by industrial units and coin makers. In worldwide trade, Gold prices fell to their lowest settlement in nearly a year, with the precious metal failing to find safehaven support from the US-China trade dispute, as the US dollar gained for the week. w

trade war concerns, all of it insulated by robust set-of corporate earnings seasons which kick-started during the week. The market saw change in its perspective and direction as both Sensex and Nifty rallied all-time highs by reclaiming the psychological 36K-level and 11K-level respectively. The strong US jobs data led a recovery in global stocks while eased the impact of US-China trade dispute.

Mumbai: India’s capital market regulator has proposed amendments to tighten laws governing auditors and other thirdparty individuals hired by listed companies for auditing financial results, among other things. The Kotak Committee, formed to come up with proposals for improving corporate governance, last year recommended that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) should have clear powers to act against auditors and other third-party individuals or firms with statutory duties under the securities law. Auditing lapses have caused several frauds to go unnoticed for years and the capital market regulator has had no direct control on the

auditing firms. SEBI has proposed giving the board of directors of the company the authority to take appropriate action after conducting an investigation against the individual or firm that violates any regulations or submits a false certificate or report. The proposed changes come months after Punjab National Bank, India’s second largest staterun lender, stunned markets after uncovering a $2 billion loan fraud that had gone undetected for years. Merchant bankers, credit rating agencies, custodians, among others, are registered and regulated by SEBI but chartered accountants, company secretaries, valuers and monitoring agencies do not come under any direct regulators.

Creating cynicism a la Shashi Tharoor New Delhi: Shashi Tharoor is a maverick polician but he is a qualified man. He is a Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) and has been a junior minister in the Manmohan Singh Government. Tharoor is a student of history. One expects that he must have read modern Indian history and kept himself abreast with post independent India. Our Parliamentary democracy is 68 year old. When he says, “Our constitution will not survive if the BJP wins elections in 2019 and retain power under the leadership of Narendra Modi’ he is trying to create panic among the people of the country. It is like spreading and promoting ‘cynicism’ in India. Had it come from someone branded anti-national or someone outside India trying to destablise and undermine our

democracy one could understand, but coming the mouth of a man who himself is a law maker is baffling and beyond my comprehension. He goes a step further to say that ‘there are elements in the BJP and in the RSS who will tear apart our Constitution’. All this canard from Tharoor is based on his apprehension that India will become a Hindu Rastra , Hindu Pakistan if Modi Government is voted back to power. What he means by saying India becoming Hindu Pakistan? He himself explains that India like Pakistan which is an Islamic nation where ‘minorities’ like Hindus, Christians and Sikhs are unsafe, unsecured and are persecuted by the Pakistan Government would make this country unsafe for ‘minorities’. Read briefly the history of communal violence and riots in India Mr Tharoor.

Shankersinh Vaghela’s son

Dubai : Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on Saturday the United States was more isolated than ever over sanctions against Iran, even among its allies, in remarks carried live on state television. Rouhani, speaking after meeting the heads of parliament and the judiciary, appeared to be trying to ease popular concerns fuelled by US President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw from world powers’ 2015 deal with Iran on its nuclear programme. The likely return of US economic sanctions has triggered a rapid fall of Iran’s currency and protests by bazaar traders usually loyal to the Islamist rulers. “Today, we are in conditions in which the United States is more isolated than ever over the sanctions issue. America’s illegal actions … have even isolated it among its own allies as we just saw,” Rouhani said, referring to protests held in Britain against Trump’s visit there. “The government pledges to the people that there will be no problems for the country in terms of energy, transportation, basic goods and production,” Rouhani said.

7 immigrant children reunited with their mothers in New York

Mahendrasinh joins BJP

Gandhinagar : Mahendrasinh Vaghela, son of former Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela, joined the BJP on Saturday in the presence of Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel, BJP Gujarat chief Jitu Vaghani and others in Gandhinagar. Mahendrasinh is a former Congress MLA who quit the party last year in a rebellion led by his father, ahead of the Rajya Sabha elections where Congress top leader Ahmed Patel was seeking re-election to the upper house. On his joining BJP, Mahendrasinh said Saturday, “I am ready for any kind of responsibility.

As for the question of my father joining BJP or not only he will know.” Last year 13 MLAs quit the Congress led by Vaghela who announced his quitting on his 77th birthday in July. This exit brought the number of Congress MLAs down to 43 in the Gujarat Assembly, leading to a situation making Patel’s win difficult. Vaghela quit after the presidential election where Congress MLAs were suspected to have crossvoted. One of them Balwantsinh Rajput was fielded by BJP for the Rajya Sabha but he lost to Ahmed Patel.

New York : Seven immigrant children who’d been separated from their families left a New York City social services center Friday holding their mothers’ hands and carrying balloons, backpacks and stuffed animals. A woman from Guatemala held her 5-year-old son in her arms, more than two months after they were separated. He and his 15-year-old brother have been staying with a New York foster family. “I want to thank everyone who made this possible because for me it seemed impossible at one point,” said Rosayra Pablo-Cruz, speaking in Spanish. “When it’s in God’s plans, everything is possible.” They left the Cayuga Center in East Harlem, which has a federal contract to place unaccompanied immigrant children in short-term foster care. Yeni Gonzalez, another Guatemalan mother, was given custody of her three sons, ages 6, 9 and 11. “I feel very happy,” she said. She thanked elected officials, her attorney, and volunteers who paid her bond through crowdfunding and drove her from the Eloy Detention Center in Arizona to New York. She had a message for mothers still in detention near the Mexican border: “Fight because with the help of all these people you will succeed, and the help of God.” Julie Schwietert Collazo was one of the people. She organized the caravan that brought Gonzalez to New York after her volunteer group paid $7,500 bond so Gonzalez could be released from detention.
