Exit Poll result, Gujarat and Himachal

BJP tipped to win comfortably • Polls predict BJP to retain Gujarat; snatch Himachal Pradesh from Congress. • TIMES NOW-VMR projects a big win for the BJP in Gujarat with 109 seats.

Mumbai: The exit polls for the Assembly elections in Gujarat and Himachal Pradesh have predicted an easy victory for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Gujarat: The TIMES NOW-VMR exit poll has predicted a big win for the BJP in Gujarat, where the second phase of the polls ended on Thursday, with 109 seats.

The Congress, which hoped to dethrone the BJP government in the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has been projected to win 70 seats, while the rest will win three. The NewsX-CNX exit poll gave BJP 115 seats and the Congress 65. India Today-Axis My India predicts BJP’s victory for the sixth consecutive time. The

saffron party is projected to win 99-113 seats, while the Congress would get 68-82 seats. The ABP News-CDCS exit poll has given 117 seats to the BJP, 64 to the Congress and 1 to others. The Republic-C Voter has, however, given 108 seats to the BJP, like most of the exit polls. The Congress is projected to get 74 seats. Elections to 182 Assembly seats in Gujarat

were held in two phases on December 9 and 14. To form government in the state, a party has to win at least 92 seats. Exit polls show BJP is comfortably above that mark. Where they stood in 2012: The BJP, led by Narendra Modi, won 116 seats out of total 182 seats and formed the government while INC won 60 seats. Himachal Pradesh: In Himachal Pradesh, poll

analysts have predicted a sweeping victory for the BJP. The BJP will oust the ruling Congress by winning 47-55 seats, predicts India Today. Congress will get between 13 and 20 seats. TOI Online-CVoter has also predicted BJP’s victory with 41 seats. Congress is predicted to get 25 out of the 68 Assembly seats in the state.

How Muslim women in UK are bereft of rights

British-Muslims do not have it easy. They live in an increasingly xenophobic Britain. BRITISHMuslims do not have it easy. BRITISH-Muslims do not have it easy. They live in an increasingly xenophobic Britain, where groups like Britain First openly ask for their expulsion and cultivate the political belief that they are usurpers in the country. In schools, teachers and other officials are told to watch out for even little girls who wear headscarves, and report suspicious behaviour in children as young as nine or 10. In employment and in policing, they are subject to surveillance and harassment, the presumption that they are all terrorists. The fact that they live in distinct geographic areas allows them to be further ghettoised, their neighbourhoods transformed into enclaves where it is hard to believe that one is very far from the village back home. Within this isolation imposed both by discrimination and self-segregation, a host of problems breed. One, recently given statistical clarity by a documentary that aired on BBC’s Channel 4, is the issue of the legality of marriages contracted within the community. According to the film’s researchers, who spoke to 923 women in 14 British cities, nearly six in 10 British women who have had a Muslim marriage ceremony are not, in fact, married as far as the law of the state is concerned. This means that their relationships with their husbands, recognised by religion as wedlock, aren’t recognised as such by the British state. Women in these situations would not be recognised as the legal heirs of their husbands in the event of death. Nor would they be, in the case of divorce, entitled to an equitable share of the assets acquired during the marriage, as UK law stipulates. In sum, they are not married at all in the eyes of the state and would also have no recourse if they found out that their husband was either already married or was interested in marrying again. The reason is unsurprising. The UK does not recognise a religious marriage ceremony on its own — a separate civil ceremony is required. Sixty-one per cent of British-Muslim women do not have the civil ceremony. Either the elders involved paint participation in such a ceremony as some kind of rejection of the importance of the Muslim marriage ceremony, or one or both of the parties are unaware that their marriage will not be considered valid in the event of divorce or death. The laws of the homeland do not apply because they are no longer in Pakistan or Bangladesh, and they are also somehow “not” in Britain. In this way, they are denied the legal protections that they may have been able to access in either of the two places. The impact of the legal limbo where both Islamic and British law have limited effect has also led to an increase in marital crimes, with high rates of domestic violence and in some cases, even homicide.

Hollywood - Bollywood SRK’s clash with Sara Ali Khan’s debut still on the cards? Read to know more

Did Salman Khan just confirm the third installment of Tiger?

Mumbai: After ‘Ek Tha Tiger’s blockbuster release, people are awaiting ‘Tiger Zinda Hai’s release. While the wait for the second instalment of Tiger has become shorter, Salman might have confirmed that there may be a third instalment of the Tiger

series.Salman was present at Bina Kak’s book launch on December 13th with his co-star Katrina Kaif and father Salim Khan. There he was in such a jovial mood that he spoke about everything from taking a dig at wildlife to almost revealing that

Tiger part 3 might be in the pipeline. He said, “If Ali or Kabir decide, then maybe next year we’ll (Salman and Katrina will) be back.”‘Tiger Zinda Hai’, directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, will release on December 22nd.

Mumbai: Shah Rukh Khan has often found it difficult to get a solo release for his films in the last few years, and this has also considerably affected his star stature in the industry. The actor, whose next release is the highly anticipated Aanand L Rai directorial, where he’ll be seen playing a dwarf, had been announced in late 2016 itself, for a Christmas, 2018 release. However, then came Abhishek Kapoor’s ‘Kedarnath,’ headlining Sushant Singh Rajput. The film has been much in the news for being Sara Ali khan’s debut vehicle. When the film was revealed to be headed for a Christmas 2018 release, fans of the superstar were taken for a rude shock.

Shahid to replace Hrithik in Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s Kabaddi?

Revealed: The mystery behind Deepika not wishing Anushka on her wedding Mumbai: Every celebrity from sports and Bollywood took to twitter to congratulate Anushka Sharma, except her “friend” Deepika Padukone. An insider told Pinkvilla that Dippy felt like giving a “personal touch” so she personally messaged Anushka Sharma.“Maybe not on social media, but Deepika has wished the happy couple personally and it was a warm message. She texted them both her best wishes individually post the wedding.

Deepika likes to add her own personal touch to whatever she does – be it her own team or friends and social media can be a cold and impersonal way of conveying one’s feelings. Also she has always been very supportive of Anushka in everything she has done as Anushka has been of her. They may have had issues in the past but now both have found admiration and respect for each other,” said the insider. However a source also

clarified to the website that the two actresses were never on good terms. A hint of it was revealed on ‘Koffee With Karan’s episode when Anushka along with Katrina Kaif kept mum when asked about the “friendship” with Deepika. The cracks in their friendship might have formed when Katrina started dating Deepika’s ex Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika may have become fond of Anushka’s former

boyfriend Ranveer Singh. The source says, “While we know that Deepika and Anushka are on good terms today, it was odd that Deepika didn’t wish Anushka on social media, as the rest of the Bollywood stars. All the talk started when Deepika started dating Anushka’s alleged exflame, Ranveer Singh but their relationship is much more amicable today so one would have expected her to wish Anushka on her special day.

Mumbai: Shahid Kapoor’s last release might have been the disastrous Vishal Bhardwaj directorial ‘Rangoon,’ but the actor has still got the best of directors lining up to work with him. The latest to join the list is none other than Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra. Shahid, who’s awaiting the release of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s highly controversial ‘Padmavati,’ has signed Shree Narayan Singh’s ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu,’ and is now

reportedly all set to star in Mehra’s ‘Kabaddi’. The film was initially slated to star Hrithik Roshan. Incidentally, Hrithik has signed Vikas Bahl’s ‘Super 30,’ which was initially rumoured to headline Shahid Kapoor. According to rumours, Shahid was spotted outside Mehra’s office recently. Mehra is currently working on ‘Fanney Khan,’ starring Rajkummar Rao, Aishwarya Rai bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan.

Premier League: Manchester City beat Swansea 4-0, create 15-match unbeaten record London: Another win, another record for rampant Premier League leader Manchester City. And this one might be the most impressive of the lot. By beating Swansea 4-0 on Wednesday, City racked up its 15th straight victory - a feat never achieved in the 129-year history of England’s top division. Second-place Manchester United also won, beating Bournemouth 1-0 through Romelu Lukaku’s goal to keep the gap at the top to 11 points, but chasing down its cross-town rival looks to be a forlorn hope at this rate. City is

unbeaten after 17 games and has now scored 52 goals, the latest coming at Liberty Stadium through David Silva (2), Kevin De Bruyne and Sergio Aguero against last-place Swansea. With Liverpool held 0-0 at home by West Bromwich Albion for a second straight draw at Anfield, Tottenham climbed back into fourth place - the final Champions League qualifying spot - thanks to a 2-0 win over Brighton. Council may bring petrol, realty under GST in future: Sushil Modi

New Delhi: All powerful GST Council will consider bringing electricity, petroleum products and some other items under the ambit of GST in future, Bihar Finance Minister Sushil Modi said here.“Electricity, real estate, stamp duty and petroleum products should become part of GST (Goods and Services Tax). This would be our (GST Council) endeavour,” he said at the annual meet of industry chamber Ficci. He, however, said it would be difficult to specify any timeline for this to happen. Inclusion of these can happen without amending the Constitution, he said.If petroleum products are brought under the GST regime, he said, it will attract the highest tax slab prevalent at that time and states would be at liberty to levy cess on it in order to protect

their revenues. Both states and the Centre earn 40 per cent of their revenue from petroleum products at present. Modi also hinted at the reduction of tax slabs going forward after tax collection stabilises. The current GST regime has five tax slabs - 0 per cent, 5 per cent, 12 per cent, 18 per cent and 28 per cent. An

additional GST cess is also levied on certain products.Although the final decision would be taken by the Council, he said, “The possible scenario could be that the current highest tax slab of 28 per cent could be brought down to 25 per cent and two tax slabs of 12 per cent and 18 per cent could be merged into one.”

Ahmedabad city is BJP’s No. 1 hunting ground Soon after joining the BJP in 1987, Narendra Modi’s first litmus test was winning the municipal elections in Ahmedabad in January that year. He knew well that the road to rule Gujarat went via Ahmedabad. He did it successfully and this marked the BJP’s ascent to power in the state - first as a partner of Chimanbhai Patel’s Janata Dal in 1990 and then with a clear majority in 1995. Since then, the BJP has never lost power in this saffron bastion. Ever since Modi became Gujarat’s CM in October 2001, Ahmedabad has been the showcase of his ‘development model’. Be it the BRTS, the Sabarmati riverfront, Kankaria

lakefront, Vibrant Gujarat business summits, GIFT City, metrorail, municipal tax reforms, ring roads, DMIC corridor, EWS housing, the bullet train and then Unesco recently inscribing Ahmedabad as India’s first World Heritage City. Though BJP maintains its dominance over these constituencies, the 2015 Patidar agitation followed by demonetization and GST make it appear a tad

Gujarat Elections 2017: Everything controversial about it!

What is an election without its share of controversies? True to the spirit of the poll campaign trends in India, this time too, controversies played an important role in sending our collective adrenaline gushing. There’s an icing on the cake here too. Even when it comes to poll-time controversies, Gujarat can boast of a string of firsts – no other state election holds the record of getting a former prime minister to break his maun and tear into a current PM. No other state election has seen Pakistan being dragged into it and accused of colluding with the opposition to hatch conspiracies. No other state election has seen a country’s PM campaigning so aggressively or the dynastic scion of India’s grand old party visiting 27 temples in three months. And yet the people have the first of firsts to their credit. The very first controversy, which refuses to die down still came from no political party but the people themselves. Vikas gando thhayo chhe It was the ‘vikas gando thhayo chhe’ (development has gone crazy) slogan, mocking BJP’s development claims, which caught the imagination of creative social media addicts and raised the bar for meme creators. The slogan, coined by a Patidar youth, took the form of a campaign, the intensity of which forced even CM Vijay Rupani to react. This was much to the displeasure of Union Minister Arun Jaitley who asked BJP members to avoid commenting on it.Soon after Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia said that the Goods and Services Tax needed a major rejig, Rahul Gandhi wasted no time in dubbing it BJP’s Gabbar Singh Tax. At his Morbi rally, Modi hit back, “Those who have looted the country can only think of dacoits.”

vulnerable. Senior BJP party leaders claim that they are working harder in Patidar and trader dominated constituencies like Thakkarbapanagar, Sabarmati, Bapunagar, Naroda and Nikol. “I have been voting for the BJP in all elections till now. This time owing to the atrocities on Patidars I don’t think I will vote for any party,” said Vishal Padsala, a businessman and a resident of Nikol.

Phase-2 polls for 93 seats in central and north Gujarat today AHMEDABAD: Polling for 93 seats in the second and final phase of elections in Gujarat will be held on Thursday with nearly 2.22 crore voters eligible to choose from among 851 candidates. Counting of votes for all 182 seats will be held on Monday though some trends would be known by Thursday evening when results of various exit polls pour in.Phase two elections are being held for 61 seats in central Gujarat and 32 seats in north Gujarat. Polling in these areas in the last elections in 2012 was 72.64%. But looking at the trend in the first phase, when voter turnout for 89 seats in Saurashtra and south Gujarat dropped to 66.75%, this number too could go down despite some very intensive campaigning by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress presidentelect Rahul Gandhi. The rhetoric for the second phase got vicious and spiced with communal overtones with Modi alleging that Pakistan was playing a role in Gujarat elections through the Congress and that there was a plan to install Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel as CM.

HC notice to govt over prisoner’s charge AHMEDABAD: Gujarat high court on Wednesday issued notice to the state government and the director general of police (DGP) in response to a complaint from a prisoner alleging discrimination in the jail against convicts of serious offences.A bench of chief justice R S Reddy and justice V M Pancholi took suo motu cognizance of the issue and the high court filed a PIL after it received a letter from a prisoner from Junagadh. The grievance expressed in the letter was that prisoners convicted for serious offences like rape, and waging war against the nation are not allowed to use telephone facility in the prison to talk to their family members. Allowing telephone access to some prisoners, and denying the facility to the others is a discriminatory gesture on the part of the jail authorities. The prisoner has stated that the convicts of serious offences have already been punished

international Washington: The US Army will soon send teams of cyber warriors to the battlefield, officials said Wednesday, as the military increasingly looks to take the offensive against enemy computer networks. While the Army’s mission is generally to “attack and destroy,” the cyber troops have a slightly different goal, said Colonel Robert Ryan, who commands a Hawaii-based combat team. “Not everything is destroy. A series of missile tests along with pressure from Donald Trump pushed Beijing to prioritise improving relations with Seoul.

China, S Korea to meet, hope to resolve N Korea crisis

Beijing: South Korean President Moon Jae-In will meet with his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping in Beijing on Thursday amid mixed US signals about potential talks to resolve the North Korean nuclear crisis.Relations between Beijing and Seoul have encountered their own rough patch over the US military’s deployment of a powerful antimissile defence system in the South to counter the North’s threats.Moon hopes to “normalise” ties during the visit, his office has said, after Beijing imposed economic measures against South Korean companies, a move seen as retaliation to the installation of the THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) system. China sees the deployment as a threat to its own security.Moving past the disagreement has become increasingly important amid growing concern that bellicose rhetoric between Washington and Pyongyang could spark war on the Korean peninsula.“The highlights to watch of the visit would be

whether the two sides (Seoul and Beijing) can start a dialogue and cooperation mechanism on the DPRK (North Korea) nuclear issue,” said Zhu Feng, international studies professor at Peking University.China has long refused to countenance the possibility that the North’s Communist regime could collapse. But a series of nuclear and missile tests combined with pressure from US President Donald Trump has pushed Beijing to reconsider its position and prioritise improving

relations with Seoul. “It is a very uncertain period,” Zhu said. “The two sides need high-level dialogues and dialogues between militaries. These dialogues cannot really start without the normalisation of the bilateral relations” he added. Moon’s visit comes after US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said Washington was ready to talk to North Korea “without preconditions”, though it remains determined to force Pyongyang to give up its nuclear arsenal.
