Short News ‘Slap on politics of lies, truth always triumphs’: Shah to Rahul on Rafale

New Delhi: As the Supreme Court on Friday dismissed petitions seeking probe into Rafale deal, BJP chief Amit Shah welcomed the decision and said it “exposed” the campaign of misinformation against the government headed by Congress president Rahul Gandhi and asserted that the “truth always triumph”. Shah said, “We welcome the judgement of the Supreme Court, the truth has won. People were being misled by unfortunately the country’s oldest party. It’s a slap on politics of lies.” “Rahul Gandhi should apologize to the nation for misleading people. Want to ask Rahul ji what was the source of information on basis of which he made such big allegations?,” questioned Shah.

Had alliance with BJP knowing it will be suicidal: PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti Mumbai: Former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti on Friday said her People’s Democratic Party (PDP) had an alliance with the BJP knowing it will be ‘suicidal’. When her party entered into a tie-up with the BJP to form government in J&K, it was expected that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will reach out to Pakistan, she said. “We knew it (alliance with the BJP) was suicidal for the party. Yet we put everything at stake. For a party which is seen as one that encourages talks with separatists, we thought (PM) Modi will rise to the occasion and since (former PM Atal Bihari) Vajpayee did not have that kind of a mandate, we thought he will reach out to Pakistan, to the people of J&K and start what Vajpayee had left,” she said. When Vajpayee was the prime minister and her father was chief minister of J&K, the message which went out was both the Centre and the state government were on the same page and the 2002-2005 period became the “golden period”, she said.

‘Satyameva Jayate’: Jharkhand CM Raghubar Das on SC verdict on Rafale deal Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Raghubar Das on Friday said the Congress has a “history of telling lies” and the Supreme Court verdict on the Rafale deal is a triumph of truth. “Finally the truth has come up. The Congress has a history of telling lies and indulging in scams. The truth of Rafale deal has come up---Satyameva Jayate (truth triumphs),” the chief minister of BJP-ruled Jharkhand said in a statement. The Congress has been alleging that the government had put pressure on Dassault Aviation to select Reliance Defence Limited (RDL) as its offset partner. The government, RDL and Dassault Aviation had rejected the charges. “The Supreme Court said that there is no irregularity in the Rafale deal. A lie is a lie. It will not become true following repeated spreading of misinformation,” Das said. His statement comes after the apex court dismissed all the petitions seeking a direction to the CBI to register an FIR for alleged irregularities in the purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France and said there was no occasion to doubt the decision-making process in the multi-billion dollar deal.

Rafale deal: Relief for Modi govt as SC dismisses all petitions seeking probe New Delhi : The Supreme Court Friday dismissed petitions seeking a court-monitored probe into the deal for purchase of 36 Rafale fighter jets from France’s Dassault Aviation saying “we are satisfied that there is really no occasion to doubt the (decision making) process…” A bench of Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph said, “We do not find any substantial material on record to show that this is a case of commercial favouritism to any party by the Indian Govt as the option to choose the IOP (Indian Offset Partner) does not vest with the Indian Government.” The court, in its 29-page judgment, said: “Perception of individuals cannot be the basis of a fishing and roving enquiry by this Court, especially in such matters.

Allegations on Rafale ‘fiction writing’ that compromised security: Jaitley New Delhi: Finance Minster Arun Jaitley on Friday dubbed allegations on the Rafale jet deal as “fiction writing” that compromised national security, after the Supreme Court dismissed the pleas challenging the deal between India and France for procurement of 36 Rafale jets. In an apparent attack on Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who has been alleging corruption in the purchase of the fighter jets, Jaitley said “disrupters” have lost on all counts and those who manufactured falsehood compromised the security

of the country. Falsehood is bound to fall apart and it has, Jaitley said, adding that if honest deals are questioned, then civil servants and armed forces will think twice before undertaking such a process in future. Buoyed by the verdict, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, who addressed a press conference along with Jaitley said the matter of Rafale deal has been put to rest through the apex court’s order. Jaitley said every figure cited by Rahul Gandhi in his allegations has been false. He said the government would again press for a debate on the issue in Parliament.

Regret not acting on report submitted by Country going through interlocutors on Kashmir: P Chidambaram troubled times… but it’s a

New Delhi : Former Union Minister P Chidambaram on Thursday said the UPA government should have acted on the report submitted by three interlocutors on Kashmir in 2011 and he “deeply regrets” the way it was handled, as he underscored that talks are the “only way forward” to resolve Kashmir’s problems. Speaking at Lokmat National Conclave, Chidambaram noted that bringing an amendment to Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) and removing “inhumane” provisions will send a very powerful signal in Jammu

and Kashmir. He termed the “muscular military” approach to Kashmir as the “biggest mistake” of the government and claimed it has only driven more youths towards militancy. Three Kashmir interlocutors, M.M. Ansari, Radha Kumar and Dileep Padgaonkar, were appointed by the Centre as part of its eight-point package for the state following the massive unrest in the valley in the summer of 2010 The report was submitted to the Union Home Ministry in 2011, when Chidambaram was the Home Minister.

Rahul crossed limits of propriety, decency by almost condemning SC: BJP

Ravi Shankar Prasad said SC had ‘exposed lies’ of Rahul Gandhi which he has been using to attack ‘honest and popular’ PM. New Delhi: The BJP on Friday accused Rahul Gandhi of “almost condemning” the Supreme Court for dismissing the pleas challenging the Rafale fighter aircraft deal, and said the Congress president crossed all limits of propriety, decency and probity in public life. Union Law Minister and senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad launched a counterattack on Rahul Gandhi, saying the apex court had “exposed his lies” which he has been using to attack the “honest and popular” Prime Minister. With Rahul Gandhi reiterating his “chowkidar chor hai” (watchman is thief) barb against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Prasad dubbed his remarks

“shameful” and “cheap”, and accused him of using an abuse against the Prime Minister. Rahul and his mother Sonia Gandhi are themselves facing a trial on corruption charges, he said, referring to the National Herald case against them. The BJP expected that Rahul Gandhi would accept the Supreme Court’s verdict but it did not happen, Prasad said. “He (Rahul Gandhi) crossed all limits of propriety, decency and probity in public life by almost condemning the Supreme Court. What does he mean? Is he above the Supreme Court? Is the Congress above the Supreme Court? What kind of language is this?” he asked. Prasad said Rahul Gandhi’s problem is his arrogance and conceit about his dynasty.

temporary phase

New Delhi : Former President Pranab Mukherjee Thursday said the country is going through troubled times but it was a temporary phase as Indians will “tenaciously fight it in order to re-establish the country’s unique national identity — etched in our Constitution”. Mukherjee was speaking at the Christmas celebrations organised by the Catholic Bishops Conference of India (CBCI) in New Delhi. “Divisive tendencies, intolerance and prejudiced ‘fear of the other’ seem to be defining us in place of the composite and yet diverse nation that we emerged in over 5000 years of co-existence, acceptance, adaptation and assimilation. However, it is my considered belief that this, like in the past, is a temporary phase,” Mukherjee said in his Christmas message. On the growing intolerance, Mukherjee said the Constitution should be the only guiding ideology in the country as it was crucial for the growth of the country. “Our freedom to practice and propagate our religion, the freedom to set up educational institutions, to choose any occupation, all are important and they must be safeguarded.

PM Modi, Anil Ambani names will come up if JPC probes Rafale deal: Rahul

Supreme Court on Friday dismissed pleas challenging deal between India and France for procurement of 36 Rafale jets. New Delhi: Notwithstanding the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Rafale deal, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday maintained that there was massive corruption in the contract and wondered why the CAG report “cited by the Supreme Court” on it had not yet been shared with the Public Accounts Committee of Parliament. Rahul Gandhi also reiterated the Congress’ demand for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the fighter jet deal and claimed that if it was conducted, names of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and businessman

Anil Ambani will come to the fore. Both government and Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group have rejected Rahul Gandhi’s allegations of any wrongdoing. At a press conference, Rahul Gandhi said the Supreme Court in its verdict cited that a report by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) on the Rafale deal was submitted to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) but asserted that no such report was given to the House panel headed by Congress’ leader in Lok Sabha Mallikarjuna Kharge.

Promising the moon, but will they deliver?

The drubbing of the Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh has proved beyond doubt that all isn’t well in India’s hinterland. An analysis of the poll results in these three states show that the incumbent BJP won just 35% of the 436 rural assembly seats, while the Congress walked away with 55% of the seats. Going ahead, politicians and policymakers can ill afford to ignore the acute distress in rural India, which is driven by a deflation in crop prices, lack of employment opportunities and stagnant rural wages. The resurrection of the Congress, which won the elections banking on populist prepoll promises, coupled with anti-incumbency and anger among voters on the promise of “achhe din” by Prime Minister Modi, is all set to change India’s policy priorities over the next few months, ahead of the 2019 general elections. Among the array of poll promises, the promise of loan waivers ranks foremost. Ever since farmers took to the streets in June last year, seeking the government’s attention, their primary demands have been a complete loan waiver and remunerative crop prices. For farmer movements, rising corporate non-performing assets and haircuts offered by banks provided added ammunition: If industrialists’ loans can be written off, how can the government deny it to farmers who are struggling to make ends meet? Sensing the mood, the Congress promised generous farm loan waivers in all the three states where it fought the incumbent BJP. In states like Chhattisgarh, it went a step ahead by promising to procure paddy at a steep ₹2,500 per quintal, substantially higher than the centre’s support price of ₹1,750 per quintal. Before these elections, the BJP took a principled stand by saying it is concentrating on structural reforms in agriculture. However, it did raise support prices significantly and announced a new procurement scheme and termed it “historic”. Failure to implement this ambitious scheme named PM-AASHA has earned it the farmers’ wrath. With general elections round the corner, the BJP has fewer options to counter the offers made to voters by the Congress. On Tuesday evening, as it became clear that the Congress would oust the BJP in Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Reuters reported that the centre was considering a countrywide loan waiver for farmers, similar to what the United Progressive Alliance government implemented before the general elections in 2009.

WTA to offer increased rankings protection for returning mothers: Report

Players returning from maternity leave or injury will be able to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a 3-year period.

New York: The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) will offer greater protection to the rankings of mothers returning to the tour after giving birth, British media reported on Thursday. Players returning from maternity leave or injury will now be able to use their previous ranking to enter 12 tournaments over a three-year period. However, Serena Williams’ request for returning mothers to be seeded in line with their rankings has not been approved. The 23-times Grand Slam champion made a comeback in February after giving

birth to her daughter last year. Her world ranking had fallen to 451 when she was not seeded at the French Open. She was, however, seeded 25th at this year’s Wimbledon despite being ranked outside world’s top 32 players. The BBC reported that the WTA had also clarified its regulations around clothing to ensure Williams would be able to wear the black catsuit which attracted the ire of the French Tennis Federation president Bernard Giudicelli. The WTA did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for confirmation.

Lasith Malinga back as Sri Lanka ODI, T20 skipper

Colombo: Sri Lanka on Friday brought back Lasith Malinga after a long hiatus as captain of its limitedover squads to lead the national team against New Zealand. Sri Lanka Cricket said the 35-year-old rightarm fast bowler was named skipper of a 17-man squad for three one-day internationals and one T20 starting January 3. Malinga led Sri Lanka to the T20 World Cup in 2014. But since captaining Sri Lanka against the UAE in February 2016, he has not led the national team. He had lost his captaincy as well as his place in the team after recurring injuries which forced him to sit out many tournaments. However, he captained an ODI match against India in August last year. The latest squad for the shorter forms of the game was ratified by President Maithripala Sirisena in the absence of a sports minister, the cricket board

As per RBI data on global operations for PSBs, during the financial years 2014-15 to 2017-18, PSBs recovered Rs 2,33,339 crore, of which Rs 32,693 crore was from written-off accounts, Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla said in a written reply in Lok Sabha. He was responding to a question asked on non-performing assets (NPAs) and write-offs by public sector banks (PSBs) during April 2014 to April 2018 and the amount recovered by them. Shukla said, write-offs of NPAs is

a regular exercise of the banks to clean up their balance sheet, tax benefit and capital optimisation. “Borrowers of such written-off loans continue to be liable for repayment. Recovery under relevant legal processes from written-off accounts may extend beyond the financial year in which the account is written off,” he said. During 2014-15 to 2017-18, the PSBs witnessed reduction in their NPAs due to write-offs (including compromise) to the tune of Rs 3,16,515 crore. Aggressive lending practices, wilful default/loan defaults as well as corruption in some cases and economic slowdown were the primary reasons for spurt in stressed assets, he further said.

Brussels : European Union leaders expressed deep doubts Friday that British Prime Minister Theresa May can live up to her side of their Brexit agreement and they vowed to step up preparations for a potentiallycatastrophic “no-deal” scenario. May cancelled a Brexit vote in the UK Parliament this week after it became clear the assembly would reject the deal she concluded with the EU last month. She travelled to Brussels in hope of wringing some

concessions from her European partners that would help assuage doubts about the draft divorce agreement back in London. But EU leaders rejected any attempt to renegotiate their agreement, a 585page legal text settling things like the divorce bill and the rights next year of Europeans living in Britain or Britons living in the EU, plus a document laying out their hopes for future relations, which isn’t legally binding.

Washington: Donald Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner is on the shortlist of potential candidates for the president’s next chief of staff, US media said Thursday. he is under consideration but, as I think all of us here would recognize, he would be great in any role that the president chooses to put him in,” White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said of the news, which was also reported by CBS. The president has been searching in vain for a new chief of staff after announcing that John Kelly, a retired general he had reportedly fallen out with, was to leave by the end of

the year. Nick Ayres, the 36-year-old chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, had been touted as favourite to get the job, but announced he was taking himself out of the running, dealing a blow to the president. Mark Meadows, a North Carolina Republican who heads the hard-right Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives, showed more interest -- but also ultimately withdrew his candidacy.
