Futility of talking peace to brutes

It was the most beastly farewell to the Kashmir ceasefire, unilaterally announced by the Modi government. Rising Kashmir editor Shujaat Bukhari and 4 Jammu Kashmir Light Infantry jawan Aurangzeb became martyrs of peace. For their families and sympathisers, the joyous occasion of Eid has brought unmitigated tragedy. It was an irony of fate that Aurangzeb was proceeding on leave for Eid when he was abducted and shot in the head and neck, his body having been found by a team of police and Army at a village in Pulwama district, from where he was abducted. Shujaat Bukhari had just left the Srinagar city office of his newspaper when three men on a motorcycle fired at him and his two guards, killing all three. While Aurangzeb must have been on the terrorists’ radar for his participation the army’s ongoing anti-terror operations in Shopian, which hunted down Hizbul commanders Sameer Tiger and Saddam Paddar, Bukhari had invited the wrath of the terrorists and militants for his peacebuilding initiative involving activists and members of the Indian and Pakistani governments. Both made the supreme sacrifice for the sake of order and peace and deserve the loftiest respect from a grateful nation. Also deserving salute is the fortitude shown by the staff of Rising Kashmir, who came back to the office to complete the day’s edition of the paper which Bukhari had founded. The front page carried the editor’s picture in black and white, creating a sombre mood befitting a tribute from the staff to their leader, who was a voice of sanity amidst turbulence all around. The killings, which occurred at the very last minute of Delhi’s goodwill gesture, stand out as a painful reminder of the futility of talking peace to a tribe of people wedded to barbarism and beastly disposition. The militants had outrightly rejected the peace overtures. So, it was clear from the beginning that the unilateral declaration was not working. It only encouraged the perpetrators, deriving sustenance from across the border, to embark on ever more dastardly acts. Security officials have testified that the ceasefire period witnessed a huge spurt in terror activity as well as crime. There was also an increase in casualties resulting from border skirmishes with inimical forces. Heavy gunfire on the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch had become a routine. The Union Home Ministry was at one stage contemplating the extension of the ceasefire beyond Ramzan and Eid, but the mood in the wake of the heightened violence is unlikely to encourage any such idea. A review meeting called by Raj Nath Singh is believed to have veered to the view that the ceasefire actually accorded the terrorists the opportunity to regroup and operate more freely to induct more and more young people into their nefarious game.

Cristiano Ronaldo accepts two-year suspended prison sentence, 18.8 million euro fine in tax-fraud case: Report

Bangalore : Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo has accepted a two-year suspended prison sentence and fine of 18.8 million euro after being accused of defrauding the Spanish government in unpaid tax on Friday, according to a report in Spanish newspaper El Mundo. The Portuguese captain, who is leading his side at the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia right now, is however unlikely to serve any jail time since the Spanish law dictates that for a sentence of under two years for first offence can be served on probation. In 2016, Lionel Messi and his father were found guilty on three

counts of defrauding tax authorities of 4.1 million euros ($4.7 million) from income made from image rights. Marcelo, Ricardo Carvalho, Angel Di Maria, Alexis Sanchez, Javier Mascherano, Radamel Falcao and Fabio Coentrao are among other players investigated by Spanish tax authorities as well as former Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho. Much like every year, Ronaldo is being linked with a move to Manchester United. Ronaldo sparked transfer rumours after Real Madrid defeated Liverpool 3-1 to clinch third straight Champions League trophy.

Virat Kohli clears Yo-Yo test; Ambati Rayudu fails, set to be dropped from England tour

Mohamed Salah signs new long-term contract with Liverpool Bangalore : English Premier League top scorer Mohamed Salah has signed a new fiveyear contract with Liverpool. The Egyptian forward signed the deal a year after arriving at Liverpool from Roma, and as he tries to recover from a disastrous sixweek period including injury and World Cup elimination. The new contract comes without a release clause. Liverpool coach Juergen Klopp said the new contract for Salah was a sign of the club’s ambition. “We want world-class talent to see they have a home at Anfield where they can fulfil all their professional dreams and ambitions – we are working hard together to achieve this,” he said in a

club statement Monday. “When someone like Mo Salah commits and says this place is my home now, it speaks very loudly.” Financial terms were not disclosed. Salah scored 44 goals from 52 games for Liverpool last season in all competitions, including 32 goals in the Premier League. However, he lasted just half an hour into Liverpool’s Champions League final against Real Madrid before being forced off with an injured shoulder following a challenge from Madrid’s Sergio Ramos. Liverpool lost 3-1. That injury hampered Salah throughout Egypt’s first World Cup campaign since 1990, which ended with defeat in all three games.

Mumbai: India captain Virat Kohli is all set to take part in the two-match T20 Internationals in Ireland after comfortably clearing the YoYo test but there was bad news for middleorder batsman Ambati Rayudu, who is set to be dropped after failing to attain required parameters in Bengaluru on Friday. “Almost all the players including skipper Virat Kohli have comfortably cleared the qualifying mark for the YoYo test. Ambati Rayudu is the only player in the UK-bound squad, who has failed to clear the fitness test. His score is well below the permissible 16.1 set for the India and India A team.

Rayudu will be dropped from the squad,” a senior BCCI official told PTI on conditions of anonymity. Rayudu had made a comeback in the ODI squad after more than one and half years in wilderness largely on the back of his IPL performance. It is learnt that Rayudu, who had a major role in Chennai Super Kings’ victorious IPL campaign, performed well below-par in the range of 14. A lot of people were shocked as to how someone who has scored close to 600 runs in the IPL couldn’t maintain requisite fitness standard within three weeks of the tournament’s completion.

Wafadar is the last batsman to be dismissed by R Ashwin and Afghanistan are all out for 103 in the second innings. They have been dismissed twice on the same day. Earlier, in the

Ahmedabad: Amid speculation that chief minister Vijay Rupani may be on his way out, the CM and his wife Anjali are said to have played a major role in the appointment of Amul Bhatt as chairman of the standing committee of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC). Blood bravehearts Gujarat govt still owes Rs 1.5 in khaki felicitated crore for cars hired during 2017 election, say cab owners

Ahmedabad: It was the month of May and the officials at Indian Red Cross Society (IRCS) were worried about the low supply of fresh blood in the blood bank. Against an average of 100-125 units they used to get daily, there was a drastic fall below 25 units per day due to factors like holiday in colleges and many of the families going on vacation. The biggest victims were children with thalassemia who required periodic blood supply. “So we decided to approach city police force for a blood donation drive. However, what we got was more than we asked for,” said Kiran Chudgar, chairman of Ahmedabad branch of IRCS. “What we got instead was the promise to look after 100 children with thalassemia and thus started ‘Muskan mate Raktadaan’ (Blood donation for smiles) campaign.” As the world marked World Blood Donor Day on June 14, IRCS felicitated the police officers and personnel at an event in Ahmedabad Management Association on Thursday. Gujarat governor OP Kohli was the chief guest whereas city police commissioner AK Singh and district collector Vikrant Pandey were guests of honour. A total of 10,000 units were collected by the city police in a 10-day long drive that had taken place across the city in different zones. Police officials have made commitment to continue the drive, said IRCS officials.

ONGC and Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment come together to impact 4,000 lives in Vadodara vadodara: Inspite of unprecedented progress made by India in various fields, the basic issue of safe and clean drinking water and its lack of access in most parts of the country, continues to be a roadblock stifling the collective growth of the nation. Contamination of drinking water has been identified as a critical public health issue by the World Health Organization (WHO), causing 80% of all diseases. In India, 37.7 million people are affected by waterborne diseases and about 62 million people are suffering from various levels of fluorosis. Taking cognizance of this issue, over the past few years, various corporates have come together to take up this cause and make a difference at the grassroots level. One of those recent initiatives that has made some tangible impact is a community-driven initiative undertaken by

ONGC and Eureka Forbes Institute of Environment in Vadodara to make safe drinking water accessible to every individual in the city. As part of the initiative, 2 Aquaguard Water Purification Systems were installed; one at an RTO office and the other one at GSRTC Bus Stand, Nizampura in Vadodara. These water purification systems allow people to access healthy drinking water free of cost. Each water purification system is operational for approximately 6 to 7 hours and can supply up to 5,000 litres of safe drinking water in a day. In a short span of 6 to 7 months, these water purification systems have changed the lives of around 4,000 people. The Aquaguard water purification system has been designed by the experts of water purification and is equipped with advanced technology, wherein every drop of water is treated by a 9-stage purification process.

international Donald Trump says he will not sign moderate ‘Dreamer’ immigration bill

Washington : President Donald Trump said on Friday he would not sign the more moderate of two bills under consideration in the U.S. House of Representatives that are meant to address the threat of deportation hanging over the United States’ “Dreamer” immigrants. “I’m looking at both of them. I certainly wouldn’t sign the more moderate one,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News Channel in front of the White House. “I need a bill that gives this country tremendous border security. I have to have that.” House Speaker Paul Ryan plans to bring up the two bills for votes in the Republican-controlled House next week, moving to break a long-standing stalemate on Capitol Hill over immigration law. But Ryan said on Thursday he could not guarantee passage of either measure. Up to 1.8 million young Dreamers, mostly Hispanics who entered the country illegally years ago as children, could qualify for protection under the more moderate of the two Republican bills. It would allow the Dreamers to apply for temporary “non-immigrant” visas to remain in the United States.

China reshuffles central bank monetary policy committee, Governor Yi named chief

Beijing : China has reshuffled its central bank monetary policy committee, naming three new academic members and making Governor Yi Gang the panel’s chief, the cabinet said on Friday. Yi replaces his predecessor Zhou Xiaochuan, who stepped down in March as governor of the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) after 15 years. It was not clear what impact, if any, the committee changes might have on monetary policy. The changes come as China’s economy is starting to show signs of cooling under the weight of a multi-year crackdown on riskier lending. China’s top financial regulators also sit on the 14-member policy panel, which meets once every quarter to discuss economic and policy issues. The committee can recommend changes or action when necessary, but its influence is limited. The new academic members are government economist Liu Shijin, Renmin University President Liu Wei, and Ma Jun, former chief economist at the central bank who’s now a professor at Tsinghua University. Ma, who had work stints with the International Monetary Fund and Deutsche Bank, helped promote yuan internationalisation when at the PBOC. The new academic members replaced influential Chinese economists Fan Gang, Huang Yiping and Bai Chongen. Other new committee members include Liu Wei, a vice finance minister and Chen Yulu, a vice central bank governor.
