Hyderabad techie beaten to death on child-lifting suspicion in Karnataka

Left to press for PM Modi’s reply on communal violence, lynching in Monsoon Session New Delhi: The Left parties intend to corner the government in Parliament on incidents of lynching and communal violence in the country and press for a reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the coming Monsoon Session. As they chalk out their strategy for the session, that begins on July 18, the CPI(M) and the CPI alleged that recent incidents of lynching and communal violence have “claimed” many lives in the country and the prime minister should state in the parliament what the government was doing to control the “divisive politics” unleashed by the RSS-BJP. “We would raise the issues of lynching and communal violence in the country in both the Houses of parliament,” CPI(M) Lok Sabha member Mohammad Salim told PTI.

Seat sharing challenge for NDA in Bihar despite Nitish-Shah bonhomie Patna: Though a show of bonhomie between BJP president Amit Shah and Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar during their recent talks has virtually put to rest the prospects of JD(U) returning to Grand Alliance for the general elections next year, but the seat sharing arrangement among NDA partners in the state could be a challenge. Shah and Kumar’s bonding over breakfast as well on dinner on Thursday has sent indications that he would not walk out of the coalition and join hands with Lalu Prasad’s RJD again if his party is not given the respect of “elder brother” and provided lion share of seats as used to be in the NDA during the times of Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani. Besides Shah and the Bihar Chief Minister beaming before photographers on the occasion, the BJP chief also gave the message of togetherness in words. Addressing BJP workers during his one-day tour of Bihar on July 12, Shah in an apparent reference to speculation about Kumar feeling uncomfortable in the coalition and mooting return to the Grand Alliance which comprises RJD and Congress, had said “detractors must not harbour many hopes. Nitish is not going to side with the corrupt.

On Sunday, six persons of a family were found dead under mysterious circumstances in Hazaribagh city of Jharkhand. The police reached the spot early Sunday morning and said that a suicide note was recovered from the apartment. Who turns mafia dons into messiahs?

The murder of sharpshooter Munna Bajrangi in a prison in Uttar Pradesh’s Baghpat district has once again highlighted the nexus between power peddlers, mafia gangs and upholders of the law. I have no hesitation in saying that this just a new chapter in an old game. Let me explain by rewinding to a few decades ago. A wealthy merchant in Varanasi had usurped a large sum of money from a big Calcutta businessman. Tired of the legal battle, the businessman turned to the mafia. The gang leader sent his henchmen to threaten the merchant. The merchant was prepared. He had already sounded out a local about this. The musclemen from Varanasi thrashed the mafia members from Calcutta. Those being beaten up kept saying: “If you hit us, ‘dada’ won’t spare you either.” After a thrashing, the goons from Varanasi put the mafiosi on the Upper India Express bound for Calcutta. The merchant thought the matter was sorted. But a few months later, the West Bengal police raided him and his associates at midnight. They took them into custody and headed for Calcutta. Here the delegation from Varanasi was welcomed not in a court or a jail but at a criminal’s den. They could win back their freedom only after paying a huge ransom. This was a glaring example of misuse of the law. A lot of water has flown down the Ganges since then. Calcutta has become Kolkata; the Upper India Express has stopped operations and has been replaced by superfast trains. Even the mafia has changed its style of functioning; but it has only become more powerful and all-pervasive. Here is an example. Sriprakash Shukla rose like a comet on UP’s crime horizon in the 1980s and 1990s. He evolved a style of kidnapping different from others. At one time he reportedly put the condition that the person who comes to pay the ransom for a builder must be an IPS officer. His wish was fulfilled. If this is true, could this have been possible without the collusion of the local administration? No wonder ministers and even chief ministers in the cow belt have been accused of taking cuts from the ransom that victims pay. The polluting of the river of governance has also vitiated those downstream. Still, it is unfair to apportion blame only on politicians, bureaucrats and the mafia. The stories of crime and the life stories of criminals fascinate both the affluent as well as those at the lower echelons of society. Let me talk about the well-heeled to begin with. Netflix made a web series about Colombian drug lord Pablo Escobar in August, 2015. Three seasons of the series have been telecast since then. All three have proved to be cash cows for Netflix. People watch it with interest in several languages. Mario Puzo’s Godfather evoked similar interest at one time.

Gaining confidence to play spin while facing Kuldeep Yadav, says Joe Root

New Delhi: With a series of poor performances, the pressure was on England batsman Joe Root. The righthand batsman silenced his critics as he went on to score his 12th ODI century against India at Lord’s on Friday, helping his side in picking up an 86run win. Speaking to reporters at the post-match press conference, the righthanded batsman said that the innings will give him confidence on how to pick up chinaman Kuldeep Yadav, who has proven to be a big thorn for the home side throughout the series. “For me, having not faced a lot of Kuldeep for example,

it was about picking as many cues up as possible throughout and makes sure I don’t get caught in the cold in Leeds, if I start against spin,” the 26-year old said. He further added that spending time on the pitch against such bowling attack has given him confidence. “I have only faced four balls against him in the last couple of games. But ultimately you have got to trust your game and your technique. I felt that the four balls I did face, I thought I was picking him okay. So it was more about spending some time out there and trusting the way I play spin.

MS Dhoni booed by Indian spectators during second ODI against England

Manny Pacquiao wins 60th career fight with seventh-round knockout New Delhi: Manny Pacquiao won for the 60th time with his first stoppage in nine years, and made a proclamation. “This is it. I am back in boxing,” the 39-year-old Pacquiao said after his seventh-round knockout of Lucas Matthysse for the World Boxing Association welterweight title on Sunday. “I am not done. I’m still there.” It was Pacquiao’s first bout since a contention loss last year to Jeff Horn in Australia, and since parting ways with longtime trainer Freddie Roach to work with Buboy Fernandes. “It’sust a matter of time. You have to rest and get it back and that’s what I did.” Pacquiao (607-2, 39 KOs) knocked Matthysse down onto one knee in the third and fifth rounds. He knocked the

Argentine down again in the seventh, and Matthysse spat out his mouthpiece, causing a frenzy among Pacquiao fans in the stadium. “I am not boasting but … I think he’s hurting from my punches,” said Pacquiao, who hadn’t won by knockout since 2009. “Every punch that I throw, he’s hurt. I think he’s scared of my punches.” Matthysse, who won 36 out of 39 matches by knockout, said Pacquiao was a “great fighter, a great legend,” adding that he planned to take a break. Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte and Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad attended the fight, the biggest in the country since the 1975 heavyweight clash between Muhammad Ali and Australian Joe Bugner.

New Delhi: MS Dhoni might have etched his name in the record books after he went past 10000-run mark in ODI cricket but the former captain was booed by the fans for his slow scoring rate during the second ODI against England at Lord’s. Dhoni scored 37 off 59 balls that included a couple of boundaries while chasing 323 runs on Saturday. India while chasing 323 were reduced to 140/4 when Dhoni came out in the middle. Leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal said that he didn’t really know about the incident. Moreover, he told that Dhoni needed to spend some time at the crease as he hadn’t batted much in the recent past. “I don’t know what was said to him (when he changed bats). After Hardik was dismissed, there was only

me, Siddarth Kaul, Umesh Yadav and Kuldeep. So it wasn’t like there were 2-3 specialist batsmen remaining. He hadn’t batted much, so this was a chance to get a knock. If he had hit a shot earlier and got out, we couldn’t have even batted all 50 overs,” Chahal said. England Test captain Joe Root was “surprised” with the fans’ behaviour. “Yes (it was surprising), but ultimately it doesn’t really concern us. We always try and judge how we approach the game and how we go about things. We try to maintain a professional approach and be as ruthless as possible. We managed to see India through by bowling them out by the end of the game. So we are looking after our own game and putting ourselves in a strong position by the end of the game,” Root said.

PV Sindhu falters in final hurdle again, loses to Nozomi Okuhara in Thailand Open New Delhi: Olympic silver medallist P V Sindhu’s title drought this year continued as she suffered a straight-game defeat against Japan’s Nozomi Okuhara in the summit clash of the USD 350,000 Thailand Open World Tour Super 500 badminton tournament in Bangkok on Sunday. Second seed Sindhu struggled with her consistency throughout the duel as fourth seeded Okuhara dominated the proceedings to beat the Indian

against world number 8 Okuhara, who besides the initial part of the second game, looked in complete control over the proceedings. Okuhara took no time to get her grip on the match by taking a 6-2 lead in the opening game. Sindhu did not give up and used her long reach to great effect and came up with some aggressive cross-court smashes to reduce the margin to 15-17. But then, Okuhara came up with some really aggressive net

Dalal Street ready for Rs 14,000 crore initial public offers New Delhi: The IPO lane is getting busy as at least seven companies, including Lodha Developers and HDFC Mutual Fund, are expected to hit the capital market in the coming week to raise over Rs 14,000 crore. The first among the lot would be TCNS Clothing, which sells its products under W, Aurelia and Wishful brands, that will launch its Rs 1,125-crore initial share-sale this week. While six others -- Lodha Developers, HDFC Mutual Fund, Nekkanti Sea Foods, Flemingo Travel Retail, Patel Infrastructure and Genius Consultants -- are expected to launch their respective IPOs in the coming week, according to merchant banking sources. Together, these seven companies are aiming to

raise more than Rs 14,000 crore, they added. These companies are coming out with initial public offers (IPOs) to raise funds for business expansion plans, repayment of loans and to support working capital requirements. Further, many firms are opting the IPO route to give partial exit to their existing shareholders including private equity and venture capital firms. By taking the IPO route, companies will also achieve the benefits of listing the equity shares on the bourses, which enhances their brand name. “These companies have already secured markets regulator Sebi’s approval to float IPO and now they are expected to launch their initial public offers next month,” a merchant banker said.

New Delhi: Economic Affairs Secretary Subhash Chandra Garg on Saturday said that India’s digital economy is expected to touch a USD 1 trillion mark by 2022. “We expect the Indian economy to be a USD 1 trillion digital economy by 2022 and going forward... possibly by 2030, the digital economy would be half of the total economy,” Garg said at the Platinum Jubilee Celebrations of the Institute of Cost Accountants of India

(ICAI) here on Saturday. The Economic Affairs Secretary further said that India is the sixth largest world economy and We would become fifth largest economy by 2022. “We will become 5th largest economy by 2022. If a situation is favourable then we can become 5th largest economy by 2019 hopefully,” he noted. Garg also underscored that today 7-8 percent rate of growth has become a norm.

PNB’s NPA recovery in first quarter tops FY 2018 level

play which forced Sindhu to commit unforced errors and the Japanese pocketed four straight points to wrap up the first game in her favour. Sindhu came out all guns blazing in the second game and showed aggressive intent, along with delicate net play to race to a 5-1 lead. But, some unforced errors and wrong judgements from the Indian allowed the Japanese to pocket five straight points to alter the scoreline to 7-6 in her favour.

New Delhi: Scam-hit PNB’s recovery of over Rs 7,700 crore in bad loans during the first quarter in the current fiscal has surpassed the total amount it recovered in the entire 2017-18 financial year, indicating that it has embarked on the turnaround path, the bank’s top official has said. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) resolution process has greatly helped Punjab National Bank, which was hit by nearly USD 2 billion fraud allegedly carried out by jeweller Nirav Modi and his associates, he said. “In the first quarter itself, 2-3 big accounts have been resolved. As a result, the bank has got over Rs 3,000 crore only through the resolution process,” PNB Managing Director Sunil Mehta told PTI. During the quarter (April-June, 2018-19),

two big accounts --Bhushan Steel and Electrosteel were resolved through the IBC process. “Last financial year, the bank had made recovery of about Rs 5,400 crore. Against that we have done recovery of over Rs 7,700 crore in the first quarte itself. IBC played a big role in such huge recovery because two big accounts were resolved,” he said. Going forward, Mehta said, the resolution of other accounts including Essar Steel and Bhushan Power and Steel (BPSL) are expected to give good value. Sharing details of the 12 accounts forming part of the first list, he said the bank had total exposure of Rs 12,000 crore in the 9 accounts out of 12. Of the 9 accounts, he said, 5 stressed assets with exposure of Rs 9,000 crore are from the steel sector alone.

New Delhi: The battle over lucrative pipelines supplying jet fuel to Mumbai airport is hotting up with a powerful formation of Reliance Industries and private airlines Jet Airways and Emirates trying to break the stranglehold of PSU oil firms BPCL and HPCL. BPCL and HPCL built and operate two separate pipelines from their Mahul refineries in Mumbai to supply jet fuel (ATF) to airlines at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport at Santacruz in the city. Reliance, which produces a fourth of India’s aviation turbine fuel (ATF), wants access to these pipelines to be able to

get a pie of Rs 10,000 crore fuel trade that happens at one of Asia’s busiest airports. While Reliance and airlines feel competition among fuel suppliers would bring down costs, HPCL and BPCL said the pipelines are their “captive” infrastructure to take products out of the refineries and giving third party access to them would hurt their operations and profits. Sector regulator the Petroleum and Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) on May 4 supported the Reliance idea and sought industry comments on declaring pipelines as a common carrier and giving third parties access.

Ahmedabad should be renamed Karnavati, says Subramanian Swamy

Gandhinagar : Senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Sunday once again sparked off a fresh debate for changing the name of Ahmedabad city to Karnavati. Addressing the gathering on the second day of the twoday Youth Parliament 2018 event at Karnavati University, Swamy began his address by referring to the demand as he called off the University’s name and welcomed its students. “Ahmedabad’s name should also be Karnavati. Its name should be

changed to Karnavati. A few years ago, the then chief minister had written to the then central government that it should be called Karnavati. But the Prime Minister declined it. But the chief minister at that time is the Prime Minister today. So, at least now he should do that at the earliest,” Subramanian Swamy started off his address. He opened the first session ’employment and entrepreneurship’ on the final day.

The Surat police claimed they pasted the notice only after they failed to locate the woman despite several attempts.

international Donald Trump sets expectations low for Helsinki summit with Vladimir Putin

Glasgow : President Donald Trump says “nothing bad … maybe some good” will come out of his summit Monday with Russia’s Vladimir Putin in Finland. Trump says in a television interview that he’s going into the meeting with “low expectations. I’m not going with high expectations.” The president also tells CBS News that he “hadn’t thought” about asking Putin to extradite the dozen Russian military intelligence officers indicted this past week in Washington on charges related to the hacking of Democratic targets in the 2016 U.S. election, but says that “certainly I’ll be asking about it.” The United States has no extradition treaty with Moscow and can’t compel Russia to hand over citizens, and a provision in Russia’s constitution prohibits extraditing its citizens to foreign countries.

Civilian deaths in Afghanistan hit record as suicide attacks surge

Kabul : The number of civilians killed in Afghanistan reached a record in the first half of the year, despite last month’s ceasefire, with a surge in suicide attacks claimed by Islamic State, the United Nations said on Sunday. Deaths rose 1 percent to 1,692, although injuries dropped 5 percent to 3,430, the U.N. Assistance Mission in Afghanistan said in its latest civilian casualty report. Overall civilian casualties were down 3 percent. Hopes that peace may one day be agreed in Afghanistan were raised last month by a threeday truce over the Eid al-Fitr holiday which saw unprecedented scenes of Taliban fighters mingling with security forces in Kabul and other cities. “The brief ceasefire demonstrated that the fighting can be stopped and that Afghan civilians no longer need to bear the brunt of the war,” Tadamichi Yamamoto, the senior U.N. official in Afghanistan said in a statement.

Charges undermine Assange denials about hacked email origins

for any industrial purpose, reports suggested. The villagers had informed the police about the presence of the bomb, following which the cops and the bomb squad rushed to the spot. Surat : The Surat police on Friday pasted a notice outside the house of a complainant in a rape case, identifying her and asking her to appear before the police with her father, news agancy reported on Sunday. The 21-year-old woman had accused vice president of Bharatiya Janata Party’s Gujarat unit, Jayanti Bhanushali, of raping her multiple times since November after making false promises of securing admission for her in a reputed fashion designing college. Bhanushali denied the allegations and resigned from his

post on Friday. The police said a letter written in Gujarati and signed by Kapodara Inspector RL Dave was pasted outside the complainant’s house after they failed to locate her despite several attempts. “We managed to get the woman’s uncle’s mobile number, but it was switched off,” Dave said. “This is to inform you that your application has reached the Deputy Commissioner of Police Zone 1 office, on July 12,” the notice read. “Your application is against Jayantibhai Purshottambhai Bhanushali.

Washington : At the beginning of 2017, one of Julian Assange’s biggest media boosters traveled to the WikiLeaks founder’s refuge inside the Ecuadorean Embassy in London and asked him where he got the leaks that shook up the U.S. presidential election only months earlier. Fox News host Sean Hannity pointed straight to the purloined emails from the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton’s campaign chairman. “Can you say to the American people, unequivocally, that you did not get this information about the DNC, John Podesta’s emails, can you tell the American people 1,000 percent you did not get it from Russia or anybody associated with Russia?”“Yes,” Assange said. “We can say _ we have said repeatedly _ over the last two months that our source is not the Russian government and it is not a state party.” The Justice Department’s indictment Friday of 12 Russian military intelligence officers undermines those denials. And if the criminal charges are proved, it would show that WikiLeaks (referred to as “Organization 1” in the indictment) received the material from Guccifer 2.0, a persona directly controlled by Russia’s Main Intelligence Directorate of the General Staff, also known as GRU, and even gave the Russian hackers advice on how to disseminate it. Whether Assange knew that those behind Guccifer 2.0 were Russian agents is not addressed in the indictment.
