It’s time to cease the ceasefire

The killings of rifleman Aurangzeb and journalist Shujaat Bukhari were remote-controlled. The slayings came on a day when the United Nations Commission on Human Rights declared scores of civilians have been killed by state actors in the Valley. The question is who is using UN to internationalise Kashmir? ‘Y ou left all too sudden…’ says the June 15, 2018 front-page of Rising Kashmir, the words etched on a black & white picture of journalist Shujaat Bukhari, editorin-chief of Rising Kashmir. All too sudden was also the killing of rifleman Aurangzeb, abducted and killed while on his way to a furlough to celebrate Eid with his family. The ‘rising’ in Rising Kashmir killed both of them. Sections of the Kashmiri take pride in describing the unrest in the Valley as an ‘uprising’ and among them are journalists. Five out of 10 Kashmiri journalists are azaadi-seekers. ISI didn’t like Bukhari The ‘fearless-tag’ was added to Bukhari’s name only after he took the ‘Track-II’ route to a Kashmir resolution. Bukhari believed in ‘azaadi’, as evidenced in his writings and tweets, and that is something the ISI didn’t like. The widespread condemnation from Srinagar to Delhi of Bukhari’s killing is part heart-felt, part sham. Not hours before he was killed, Bukhari was battling allegations of “biased reporting” from some Delhibased journalists. Crocodile tears were shed in the Valley in the closing hours of June 14, 2018. Among the crocodiles Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Syed Ali Shah Geelani. Both have invested their lives in a Kashmir joining Pakistan. Shujaat Bukhari had equity in ‘azaadi’. Bukhari may not have expected dividend such as murder. But playing games with the devil is fraught with danger. The challenge Rifleman Aurangzeb, on the other hand, was fighting the devil. A 44 Rashtriya Rifles soldier, his bullet-riddled body was found in the jungles of Pulwama. Since the start of 2018, ‘44RR’ has killed 19 terrorists, the most by any army unit in Kashmir. Among 44RR’s high-profile kills: Hizbul ‘commanders’ Sameer Tiger and Saddam Paddar. The former foolishly challenged a 44RR company commander “to come get him” in a video posted on Social Media. Rifleman Aurangzeb was part of the 44RR team that “got him”. ‘Aaj Contact Hoga’ The unit’s motto is ‘Aaj Contact Hoga’ and it seems Aurangzeb’s itinerary was somehow leaked and ‘Aaj Contact Hoga’ turned on him. Aurangzeb’s is an ‘army family’ father, uncles, a brother, all of them soldiers. The killings of rifleman Aurangzeb and journalist Shujaat Bukhari were remotecontrolled. If the Hizbul are behind Aurangzeb’s killing, Shujaat’s murder seems to be the handiwork of the LeT on the orders of Pakistan’s ISI.

Young ambassadors from India participated in the 3 day International Friendship Camp to gear up for the Football for Friendship International Championship

Afghanistan players need to visualise Test match situations in practice: Ajinkya Rahane Bangalore : India captain Ajinkya Rahane feels “visualising Test match situations” during practice will go a long way in preparing Afghanistan for the unforgiving five-day format. India beat Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs inside two days in what turned out to be a complete no contest after the visitors were bowled out for 109 and 103 in both the innings. “For Afghanistan, it’s just the beginning I think. With their bowling, they can do a bit of damage to any other team. It’s still a learning phase for them,” Rahane, like an elder statesman had words of encouragement for Ashgar Stanikzai’s men. Their batting is still not up to Test standard

but India’s stand-in skipper expected that things will get better. “More and more they play any opponent, they will learn from them. It was just a beginning, for them. You cannot blame them. They tried their best. After first innings, they were trying to stay on wicket, but it’s still a beginning. It is about playing those matches,” he said. “Attitude” and “patience” are two aspects that Afghan batsmen will have to inculcate, feels one of India’s finest Test batsmen in recent times. “Test cricket is a lot about attitude and patience and as I mentioned, with that bowling they can damage any team. If 2-3 guys can bat for longer period of time, they can be a decent Test side,” Rahane sounded hopeful.

Yuki Bhambri surprised at TOPS exclusion, AITA backs top singles player Yuki Bhambri is aghast at being excluded from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) after preferring the US Open over Asian Games.

Bangalore : Yuki Bhambri is aghast at being excluded from the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) after preferring the US Open over Asian Games even as a red-faced All India Tennis Association (AITA) said it is trying to convince the Sports Ministry to reconsider its decision. AITA had exempted the country’s top singles player considering that playing at the Grand Slams is crucial to secure ranking points, which would earn

the Delhi player a direct entry into the Tokyo Olympics. “We have asked the government to reconsider the decision and include both Yuki and Leander Paes in TOPS. We told them that Yuki needs to be in top-64 to earn direct qualification for Tokyo Olympics and that’s why playing at the US Open is important, ,” AITA secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee told PTI. “They told us that when Yuki gets back to playing Davis Cup, his case

Fizzy drinks bubble up in rural mkts Mumbai: Rural consumers aren’t just going for branded soaps, detergents and biscuits like their urban counterparts. They are also lapping up fizzy drinks — so much so that rural markets contribute in equal measure to sales of some of these brands. Parle Agro’s Appy Fizz, which has grown to a sizeable Rs 700 crore in annual sales, draws 45% of its turnover from rural markets. Parle Agro joint MD and chief marketing officer Nadia Chauhan said the acceptance of the brand — marketed more for its “attitude” and targeted largely at the youth — has penetrated across the country, irrespective of whether it’s an urban consumer or rural. “Appy Fizz is growing equally well in urban and rural markets,” said Chauhan. In a bid to push the brand, Parle Agro has launched a new Rs-10 stock keeping unit (SKU) in a 160ml bottle and is taking Appy Fizz from the current 0.6 million outlets to 1.6 million. Experts

said aspiration levels are similar among rural consumers. Trends of urbanisation are having a rub-off effect on rural India, with other major soft drinks players witnessing a similar experience. Coca-Cola India and Southwest Asia senior VP (operations) Shehnaz Gill said, “Consumers in rural markets are becoming more discerning and have personal preferences while selecting their choice of beverages. We have, therefore, started out on a journey to broaden our beverage portfolio and offer choices to our consumers across segments in urban, semi-urban and rural markets, which suit their palate and wallet.” CocaCola India said substantial percentage of sales (35-40%) for some of its highest selling brands are from rural markets — approximately 45-50% of Coca-Cola India’s outlets are in rural areas. “Rural sales have been growing for the past three years. We see increased potential in these markets to grow both horizontally as well as vertically,” said Gill.

In age of selfies, camera manages to hold ground

NEW DELHI: The camera is making a comeback, and in a new avatar. At a time when millions of pictures are clicked and shared daily using smartphones, the good old camera is yet to give up. While sales of volume-heavy pointand-shoot cameras (basic devices offering low quality images) have been hit by ever-improving smartphone cameras, the revival is being led by sophisticated, and high image-quality devices such as DSLR (digital single lens reflex) cameras. Sales of cameras from companies such as Nikon, Canon and Sony are on a rise, and ironically the surge is being led by increasing use of cameras with smartphones. The buyers include people engaged in wedding photography, wildlife and nature lovers, as well as the growing

number of hobbyists. Though sales of smartphones are many times higher than cameras, growth rate for latter has been encouraging. Smartphone sales stood at 123 million in 201718 compared to 81 million 2013-14. Cameras, however, managed to stage a credible recovery in the past few

years. Sales of DSLRs have grown from around 3.5 lakh units in 201314 to over 5 lakh in 2017-18. Apart from offering numerous technical options for clicking breath-taking shots, DSLRs are increasingly getting equipped with one most important feature that everybody wants today -

connectivity. Now, with these cameras you can go online by using wifi to share images in social media accounts, connect with smartphones, and edit pictures. The cameras even allow you to take selfies through connectivity with your phones and other modes. Affordability is also fuelling the trend. Threshold for buying a DSLR and a mirror-less camera has been coming down over the years and now a decent entry camera can be purchased for under Rs 30,000, nearly 50 per cent lower than the price of latest Apple iPhone or Samsung’s flagship. “Contrary to the belief that smartphones are capturing the camera market, we feel that they act as a catalyst for people to adopt DSLR cameras,” Sajjan Kumar, MD of Nikon India, told news agancy.

Open (AUD 60,000) and French Open (Euro 40,000). Even if he loses at the same stage at the Wimbledon (30,000 pounds) and US Open (USD 50,000), it would give him enough money to travel with his Australian coach Stephen Koon and a physio for the whole year. The biggest advantage of being in top-100 is a direct entry into the Grand Slams. Even if one loses in the first round, it ensures funds to the tune of R sone crore after tax deduction.

Aurangabadbased Nirlep, launched in 1968, is among pioneering brands to introduce non-stick tech and is also the first domestic firm to export to Europe. “We have proposed to acquire the entire shareholding of Nirlep for a consideration of Rs 42.50 crore, subject to adjustments of any additional liabilities for the period prior to acquisition,” Bajaj Electricals said in a BSE filing. This will help Bajaj Electricals cement its position in the fast-growing Rs 12,000-crore kitchenware category.

Nirlep founder Mukund Bhogale said, “We have agreed to sell the entire stake in Nirlep to Bajaj Electricals for around Rs 80 crore. The deal involves Rs 42.50 crore for 100 per cent equity and taking over Rs 30 crore of debt. The rest is deferred payment.” The deal will be completed in two tranches. In the first tranche, 80 per cent of shares will be acquired within 60 days from Friday and in the second tranche, the company has a right to exercise call option to acquire the remaining 20 per cent of shares any time after the closing date, Bajaj said. The publicly traded Bajaj had over Rs 4,700 crore in revenue last fiscal and is the largest small appliances player in the country.

AHMEDABAD: Retired DIG and an accused in the 2004 Ishrat Jahan case, D G Vanzara on Friday sought benefit of parity with his senior P P Pandey in seeking a discharge from the case. Pandey was discharged in this case in February, for want of evidence against him as well as for lack of government sanction from the government to criminally prosecute him in the case, in which four persons — Ishrat, Javed Shaikh alias Pranesh Pillai, Amjad Ali Rana and Jishan Zohar — were killed in an encounter with city police on June 15, 2004. Seven cops were charged by the CBI

for murder, criminal conspiracy, kidnapping and illegal detention in this case. Vanzara’s advocate V D Gajjar submitted before special CBI judge K J Pandya that the Intelligence Bureau’s inputs were received by the then police commissioner K R Kaushik. The information and instructions were passed on to then joint police commissioner Pandey. Vasna contract killing: Shooter arrested in Chotila Ahmedabad: The city crime branch on Friday arrested Ravu Kathi alias Ravi Khachar, of Amreli, from Chotila in Surendranagar district for the murder of transporter Suresh Shah. On March 10, Shah was shot dead by two bikeborne assailants, allegedly including Kathi, near Vishweshwar Temple in Vasna. Crime branch officials said that they nabbed Kathi when he went to Chotila temple to complete a vow. Officials said that Kathi has confessed to his crime and has stated that Raju Shekhwa, the main accused in the case, gave him the contract to kill Shah for Rs 50 lakh. “Kathi along with Ghanshyam Sagar received the weapon from Shekhwa, who had an old rivalry with Shah,” said additional DCP of the crime branch, Rajdeepsinh Jhala. “The duo killed Shah with that gun. Sagar was in Amreli jail and joined the operation to murder Shah while he was on parole.” After the murder, Kathi sought refuge in Amreli. Jhala said that Kathi did not use his cellphone after the murder and Shekhwa came to know about the killing through media reports. The crime branch also initiated the procedure to take custody of Sagar from Amreli jail. It is suspected that Kathi was also involved in the Hanif Dadhi murder case. Ravu Kathi, who was booked for shooting Suresh Shah, had two cases of loot and one case of bootlegging registered in Saurashtra. It has also been revealed that Shekhwa had first given the contract to kill to some other shooter but as the shooter backtracked, he passed on the contract to Kathi.

Corrupt babus, netas bigger menace than assassins: HC Ahmedabad: The Gujarat high court has said that corruption is undeniably the sole factor that has arrested the progress of our society towards prosperity, and that corrupt officials and politicians are a greater menace to society than hired assassins. The actions of corrupt politicians and bureaucrats have spurred economic unrest in the country, the court has said. In an order, released on Thursday, denying pre-arrest bail to the superintendent of LG Hospital, Dr R C Shah — who has been suspended

on the charges of bribery — Justice J B Pardiwala observed: “If...a developing country faces a menace greater than even the one from hired assassins, it is from the corrupt elements at the higher echelons of the government and political parties.” The LG Hospital is run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation. Justice Pardiwala said that if even a fraction of what people say about the magnitude of corruption is true, then it would not be far removed from truth to say that “rampant corruption is indulged with impunity by highly placed persons”.

Parents call Childline after ward is expelled

AHMEDABAD: Jayesh Patel (name changed), a resident of Ranip, approached Childline (1098) on Friday after a prominent school on SG Road handed his child a school leaving certificate (SLC). The reason for the action was the participation of Patel and his wife in protests against the school for the increased fees and non-adherence to the free regulation committee norms. His wife started a social media group to mobilize parents against the school. The issue was taken up with the district primary education officer (DPEO) after which the school offered a truce - but not before the parents gave in writing that they would refrain from protests. is receiving complaints against schools when they subject children and their parents to psychological trauma. Binal Patel, city coordinator of Childline, said that this admission season they received five similar cases. “Our role is to guide parents on whom to approach and follow up with authorities about action initiated. As seen in the case on Friday, the child had no other issue - such as educational performance or behaviour - on the basis of which he or she could be expelled. We thus took the issue to the DEO or DPEO,” she said. The school fees issue has been volatile this admission season with a number of protests against schools. Sources said that majority chooses to comply, to guard the prospects of the child. Patel said they are also getting complaints about the implementation of the Right to Education (RTE) Act. “Despite legal provisions, a few schools demand fees or more money in other forms from students. We have also put these issues to state authorities,” she said. The issue was taken up with the district primary education officer (DPEO) after which the school offered a truce - but not before the parents gave in writing that they would refrain from protests.

Ahmedabad turns to ‘Gardabad’, two more windy days in store

AHMEDABAD: When Mughal emperor Jahangir first visited Ahmedabad in 1617, he called it ‘Gardabad’ — the city of dust. The semi-arid region in which the city is located time and again lives up to the moniker, as it did on Friday after a spell of dust storms. According to India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials, the weather condition will prevail for the next two days. IMD officials said that over the next five days, there might be sporadic rains in regions of South Gujarat and Saurashtra. They said central and northern parts of the state will remain dry. The dust storms are causing a series of health problems. Those with dust allergy are staying indoors. Commuters have been advised to tie

a handkerchief on their face to prevent fine dust particles from entering the respiratory system. Dr Akhil Mukim, a Bodakdev physician, said that he is attending to about seven to eight cases daily related to running nose, laboured breathing, and burning eyes. “Those conditions can be attributed to the rise in suspended particulate matter in the city air. Stay hydrated and cover your face while going out,” he said. Experts also point to the perils of the depleted green cover. In his book ‘Environmental Education,’ Prof P R Trivedi says that trees such as banyan, sacred fig (peepul), and teak are effective in obliterating dust particles from the air and keeping the environment clean.

international Donald Trump searches for credit on North Korea nuclear deal

Washington : President Donald Trump credits his accord with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un with saving tens of millions of people from nuclear war. Now he just has to get everyone else on board. Frustrated with lukewarm backing from congressional Republicans, criticism from Democratic opponents and skepticism from allies and the media, Trump made a stop Friday on the North Lawn of the White House to promote the nuclear deal that critics have criticized as vague and lacking in clear objectives. The surprise appearance on “Fox & Friends,” followed by a combative round of questions with reporters, came two days after Trump returned from Singapore expecting a hero’s welcome and tweeting that the world could “sleep well.” Trump _ who has long pitched himself as a master dealmaker _ feels the agreement represents a radical step toward solving an intractable foreign policy problem and has been publicly and privately grumbling that not everyone agrees. Trump’s frustrations are all the more notable now during the honeymoon phase of the deal, when a triumphant cloud of goodwill has yet to be tempered by reality.

Vietnam police to prosecute American for causing public disorder: report

Hanoi : Police in Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City on Friday issued a prosecution order for an American man of Vietnamese descent for his alleged involvement in a protest over government plans for economic zones last week, state media reported. William Anh Nguyen, born in 1985, was one of thousands of people who protested on Sunday against a draft law to develop economic zones under which land leases of up to 99 years will be offered to investors. Protesters fear the leases may be snapped up by investors from powerful neighbour China, with which Vietnam has a rocky history. Nguyen was “gathering and causing trouble” in Ho Chi Minh City and was filmed on camera urging others to climb over barricades, the state-run Vietnam News Agency reported. A US State Department official said the State Department has raised concerns and engaged with Vietnamese authorities on the matter and that the Vietnamese government permitted consular access to Nguyen on Friday.

Trump nominee to be South Korea ambassador Harry Harris backs ‘pause’ in military exercises

Washington : President Donald Trump’s nominee to be ambassador to South Korea on Thursday backed the idea of a “pause” in major military exercises between US and South Korean forces, while talks on North Korea’s nuclear program continue. “The whole landscape has shifted, and I believe that we should give exercises, major exercises, a pause to see if (North Korean leader) Kim Jong Un is in fact serious about his part in negotiations,” retired Admiral Harry Harris, who just stepped down as head of the US military’s Pacific Command, told a Senate hearing. Immediately after his historic summit in Singapore with Kim on Tuesday, Trump announced he would halt U.S.-South Korea military exercises, a move long sought by North Korea. Harris said his understanding was that any suspension would involve only major military exercises and that regular training of US forces in South Korea would continue, although final decisions were up to the Department of Defense. “I’m convinced that our alliance commitments to South Korea remain ironclad and have not changed,” he told the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. On Wednesday the U.S. military was looking at ways to ensure American forces in South Korea could still be fully trained and ready. U.S. officials said it was unclear what types of training involving U.S. and South Korean troops might constitute “war games” Trump wants halted.
