PM Modi in a veiled attack on CM Mamata Banerjee said the ‘syndicate’ is playing vote bank politics to remain in power.

In Mamata Banerjee’s bastion, Modi attacks Bengal’s ‘syndicate politics’ Midnapore (West Bengal): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday trained guns at Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government saying the ‘murder your opponents’ syndicate is flourishing in the state. Addressing a farmers rally in Midnapore town, Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a veiled attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that the ‘syndicate’ is playing vote bank politics to remain in power. “The real face of ‘Ma Mati Manush’ is for everyone

Need leader like Modi, not tragedy king like Kumaraswamy: Jaitley New Delhi: Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday accused Congress of driving Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy to desperation, saying it did the same to Charan Singh, Chandra Shekhar, H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral when they were the prime ministers of governments backed by the party. Taking a potshot at opposition’s effort to stich a “non-ideological opportunistic” alliance just to “Keep Modi Out”, Jaitley said in a hard-hitting Facebook post that India cannot afford to have ‘bechara’ (helpless) Prime Minister. He said that in the past few days, “we witnessed” Kumaraswamy baring his emotions with tears, wetting his eyes and declining to accept bouquets and garlands. Indicating a strain in ties with the Congress, Kumaraswamy recently said he was “not happy” as Karnataka Chief Minister and was swallowing pain like Lord Shiva who drank poison. He is Chief Minister of the coalition government, wherein Congress is a bigger party. “He was candid enough to publicly state... Listening to these stat ents of an Honourable Chief Minister, my memory took me back to the dialogues of the tragedy era of Hindi cinema.”

Midnapore: A makeshift tent collapsed today during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally in West Bengal’s Midnapore. The canopy collapsed while the Prime Minister was addressing the gathering. At least 67 people, including 13 women, were injured in the accident. They were rushed to hospital on motorcycles and

even by the ambulance that follows the Prime Minister’s convoy. Officials said the tent was erected next to the main entrance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally venue to shelter people from the rain. Many enthusiastic BJP supporters were seen crowding inside the tent during PM Modi’s rally. The Prime

WPI inflation at 4.5-year high, grows 5.77% in June

New Delhi : India’s wholesale inflation grew 5.77 percent in June, a four-and-half year high, driven by some food items and fuel prices, latest price data released by the commerce and industry ministry showed. A higher inflation in the month of June can also be attributed to an unfavourable base effect. WPI witnessed a growth of 4.43 percent in May and 0.90 percent in June 2017. Wholesale inflation rate, measured by Wholesale Price Index (WPI), is a marker for price movements in bulk buys for traders and broadly mirrors trends in shop-end prices. “The lagged transmission of higher crude oil prices, an uptick in

cotton prices and electricity tariffs, the hardening of inflation for manufactured products as well as an unfavourable base effect, led to the sharp pickup in the WPI inflation to a 54 month high in June 2018,” Aditi Nayar, Principal Economist at ICRA said. The data for the month of April has been revised to 3.62 percent from 3.18 percent earlier. Primary articles, which accounts for more than a fifth of the entire wholesale price index witnessed a uptick to 5.3 percent in June from 3.16 percent in May owing to fuelled by higher prices of Cereals, wheat, vegetables, potatoes, nonfood articles, fibers and minerals.

Minister could be heard asking the crowd to be careful, officials said. According to officials, the Prime Minister saw the tent collapsing while he was in the middle of his speech. During his speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was heard urging the crowd: “Those who have climbed up, please get down, all of you....please climb down.

Making crop insurance work for Indian farmers

In recent months, several places in north India experienced unseasonal dust and thunderstorms, followed by unseasonal rains. This has cost lives and led to extensive crop damage. With freak weather events becoming more common, protection of farmers against these risks figures prominently in the Narendra Modi government’s agricultural policy. From the Comprehensive Crop Insurance Scheme (1985) through the National Agriculture Insurance Scheme (1999-2000), Modified National Agriculture Scheme (2010) and on to the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) (2016), India’s agricultural insurance schemes have undergone several changes in their approaches. Mitigating risk in the agricultural sector has a direct implication for agricultural productivity and farmer welfare. It also intersects with some of the key sustainable development goals (SDGs), such as ending poverty, achieving food security and curbing hunger. In spite of the government’s good intentions, assessments of the PMFBY face several challenges that make processing and verification of insurance claims error-prone and time-consuming. Payouts do not reach farmers at the right time and in amounts commensurate with their losses. Many experts and organizations working in this area are now recommending the use of information and communication (ICT) tools to help farmers regain faith in crop insurance schemes and make them more efficient and transparent. The International Initiative for Impact Evaluation (3ie) has funded a number of studies that explore the feasibility of using ICTs in the field of agricultural risk mitigation. A 3ie-funded study conducted by researchers at the International Food Policy Research Institute demonstrates how to capitalize on the availability of low-cost internet and the rising use of smartphones. This study looks at the effectiveness of a smartphone-based app amongst 750 smallholder wheat producers across Haryana and Punjab—the second and third highest wheat-producing states in India, respectively. The novel picture-based insurance (PBI) product welds technology with weather index based insurance (WBI). Farmers are asked to take pictures from the same site with the same view frame two to three times a week throughout the cropping season. The series of images thus created helps insurance agencies examine the condition of the crops. Based on the assessment, payments for losses are directly issued to the farmers’ bank accounts. Additionally, the application also provides customized agricultural advisory to farmers by experts, ensuring continual interaction. Initial findings have been promising. In the evaluation sample, farmers demonstrate relatively higher uptake of the PBI.

In an exclusive chat with indianexpress. com, National Award-winning actor Sonam Bajwa opens up about the benefits of working in regional cinema and her need to choose a good script over anything else.

Sonam Bajwa: Haven’t done films for the heck of it or for survival

Mumbai : The wait for the much-awaited biopic of India’s most googled person – Sunny Leone – ends right here on ZEE5, India’s largest and most comprehensive digital multilingual entertainment platform. Celebrating the mega success of the motion poster and trailer of KarenjitKaur – the untold story of Sunny Leone, Sunny’s fans were in for a surprise as they were invited to see the first episode at a special screening hosted by Sunny herself. Commenting on the launch, Tarun Katial, CEO, ZEE5 India said, “It has been always been our endeavor to proffer viewers a platform that offers content which is bold, edgy and stirs emotions. While our past shows have ticked

several boxes for us in getting the right product, KarenjitKaur is a perfect blend of all of those and more. The Ormax Media & Dragonfly Research gave us insights that there has been a lot of interest in knowing the real story of Sunny, and we are confident that this series will present the viewers her real journey. Karenjit’s story is one that will resonate across the country that we, as ZEE5, have made strong inroads into. This is evident from the massive interest the motion poster and trailers enjoyed when launched. The motion poster of the series garnered more than 9 million views in just a week, and the trailer broke the internet by garnering 20 million views in just three days of going live.”

Chitrangada Singh: There is a MeToo movement in Bollywood without a hashtag for the media Soorma producer Chitrangada Singh looks back at her journey, the tough choices she made, the scepticism she faced on turning producer and the silent MeToo movement that she says has begun in the industry.

Mumbai : Punjabi actor Sonam Bajwa is now preparing for her big Bollywood debut. Sonam is known for her memorable performances in films like Punjab 1984 and Super Singh. She has also worked in Tamil and Telugu films. In an exclusive chat with indianexpress.com, the National Award-winning actor opens up about the benefits of working in regional cinema and her need to choose a good script over anything else. I think it was God’s plan for me to start my career with Punjabi films. Being a Punjabi, and growing up in that culture, it was the best thing that happened to me. Coming from the place, knowing the language and loving the music, it’s been great. When I thought of becoming an actor, doing Punjabi films was the obvious choice. I come from a very humble background. My mother is a teacher and father is a principal. I knew doing a regional film is a better idea than doing a Bollywood film at that given point of time. It is not easy to get the ‘right’ Bollywood film in the beginning. When I came out of Miss India, I got a call for a Punjabi film. I spoke to my brother about it, as he is well aware of Punjabi films.

Mumbai : “My body of work does not have as many films as I would have wished for,” she acknowledges during an interview with indianexpress.com. But later in the conversation, one realises the thin filmography is also because Chitrangada Singh “made a choice over and over again” to walk out of projects because she was asked to compromise. With Soorma, her first film as a producer, running in theatres and her acting career looking better than before (she has Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster and Bazaar with Saif Ali Khan in her kitty), Chitrangada Singh looks back at her journey, the tough choices she made, the scepticism she faced on turning producer and the silent MeToo movement that she says has begun in the industry. On being asked why the Hindi film industry remains silent about its sexual predators, Chitrangada says actors might not make public comments about it, given the conservative fabric of Indian society, but they have begun changing the narrative of their stories when they are put in a position of compromise. “Yes, this is prevalent in any industry in the world, not just entertainment but corporate houses. Coming to why India isn’t the way the West is, because there’s a huge difference in the way the western society thinks and talks about the issues and the way we do

it. It can’t be like we wake up one day and say, ‘We have to be like the West.’ It doesn’t change that fast. We have to understand the matrix of our society, how traditional we are still in our thinking, the way it is being run,” she says. The Soorma producer adds, “When you say you should come out and talk about your abusers and name them, yes that’s very courageous but what needs more courage is to be able to make a choice when you’re in that place.

Of course, I’ve been lucky. But

I’ve also worked very hard to get where I am. And please don’t forget, I chose those films that went on to be successful. Thailand Open: PV Sindhu falters at final hurdle to Nozomi Okuhara again Mumbai : Organisers don’t take a chance these days when Nozomi Okuhara plays PV Sindhu on finals day. For one they don’t want other shuttlers waiting their turn in the wings endlessly. Moreover, the two have ensured tournaments slot all other doubles and men’s singles matches on the undercard, and serve up the delicious women’s singles battle as the showpiece climax. On that count, the two women wrapped up the Thailand Open sooner than

what has come to be expected. But then, even 50 minutes of world-class badminton feels like being short-changed when the two meet. This one went Okuhara’s way — a 21-15, 2118 tussle, where Sindhu barely led but never looked like she would fade away until the very end. Long rallies there might have been a few — the Japanese claimed all but the longest one — but one year has been enough to significantly alter both their

While Okuhara has been away owing to a right knee injury and gone under the radar, Sindhu was officially away only during the Thomas Uber Cup fortnight but had painfully twisted her ankle before the Commonwealth Games. The titles have dried up for both — Thailand was Okuhara’s first since Glasgow — though both are running up some steam ahead of the World’s in a fortnight’s time. There is a rising crime wave in Sri Lanka, including gang-related killings, narcotics, robberies and sex crimes, leading to a public outcry demanding executions. Ahmedabad: Over 1.25 lakh students studying in schools run by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will be offered free haircuts. The civic body in Ahmedabad has tied up with an organisation to provide haircuts to students studying in the 380 municipal schools of the city. The haircuts, however, will not be compulsory and the project is being done to boost the “swachhata campaign”. The Municipal School Board has given the clearance to International School of Aesthetics and Spa, commonly known as the ISAS Beauty School, to implement the project in its schools. Enrollment of students for the

programme was to begin from Monday, but will now start by the end of this month and haircuts will be initially given once a fortnight, after which it will become a weekly feature. The move is significant because most of the students who attend municipal schools here are from families with lower income and a sizable number of these children live in slums. The costs involved in getting haircuts done for their children is, in many cases, difficult for families to bear. The haircuts will be given keeping in mind religious customs, beliefs and practices of the families and after a written consent from the parents, officials said.

The Smart Water ATMs will dispense clear drinking water and protect them from water-borne diseases.” The water at Smart Water ATM is quite affordable along with that it can be dispensed as per requirement (200ml, 1Litre, 5Litre & 20Litres).

Beijing : China plans to launch 300 low-orbit satellites to provide worldwide communication services, with the first in the series to be launched later this year, an official media report said Monday. The first in the 300-satellite array — known as the Hongyan constellation — is set to be launched by the end of this year, it said. The announcement was made at the Hunan Commercial Aviation Space and Marine Equipment Forum held on Thursday in Changsha, Central China’s Hunan Province, state-run Global Times reported. The official Xinhua news agency had in February quoted the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC) as saying that the series called Hongyan constellation was set to be launched this year. The Hongyan constellation is composed of more than 300 satellites, along with data processing centers, and will be built in three stages. Once completed, the satellite communication network will take the place of the ground-based network and allow a mobile phone to be connected everywhere on the planet, either in a remote desert or at sea, the CASC said. China is already developing BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) to rival America’s Global Positioning System, (GPS). Besides rivaling GPS, China uses BDS for its military applications to avoid dependence on GPS. The new constellation will be the first group of low-orbit communication satellites designed and launched by China, enabling the country to better guide disaster rescue efforts, the Global Times reported. Low-orbit satellites have stronger signals and a shorter signal delay than synchronous orbit satellites, which are 36,000 km above the equator.
