In a medical bulletin, AIIMS said: “It

is with profound grief that we inform about the sad demise of former prime minister of India, Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee at 5.05 pm on 16.08.2018. Shri Vajpayee was admitted in AIIMS on 11.06.2018 and was stable in the last 9 weeks under the care of a team of AIIMS doctors. Unfortunately his condition deteriorated over the last 36 hours and he was put on life support systems. Despite the best of efforts, we have lost him today. We join the Nation in deeply mourning this great loss.”

Vajpayee was my closest friend for 65 yrs, will miss him immensely: Advani L K Advani, who along with Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a central figure in the party for much of its existence, on Thursday described the former prime minister as one of the country’s tallest statesmen and his closest friend for over 65 years whom he will miss immensely. Vajpayee’s captivating leadership qualities, mesmerising oratory, soaring patriotism and above all, his sterling humane qualities like compassion, humility and his remarkable ability to win over adversaries despite ideological differences have all had a profound effect on him, Advani said in his condolence message. ”I cherish the memories of my long association with him, right from our days as pracharaks of the RSS, to the inception of Bharatiya Jana Singh, the struggle of the dark months during the Emergency leading to the formation of Janata Party and later the emergence of the Bharatiya Janata Party in 1980,” he said.

What foreign media wrote about the charismatic former PM

Former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, one of India’s most charismatic leaders who led the nation through several crises, died here on Thursday. He was 93. While condolences poured in from across the country, news of Vajpayee’s demise was widely covered by foreign news outlets. Elaborate obituaries were put out by The New York Times, The Washington Post and CNN among others who wrote about his notable efforts to improve US-India relations during his tenure as the Prime Minister and efforts at elevating India’s position among nuclear-powered nations.

When PM Vajpayee gave a young reporter special chance to ask her question

Death of Atal Behari Vajpayee marks end of era and personal loss for me: PM Modi

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the passing away of former prime minister Atal Behari Vajpayee marks the end of an era and termed it as a “personal and irreplaceable” loss for him. He said the BJP patriarch lived for the nation and served it assiduously for decades while noting that it was Vajpayee’s exemplary leadership that set the foundations for a strong, prosperous and inclusive India in the 21st Century. Vajpayee died at the AIIMS hospital here this evening at the age of 93 following prolonged illness. “Atal Ji’s passing away is a personal and irreplaceable loss for me. I have countless fond memories with him. He was an inspiration to Karyakartas like me. I will particularly remember his sharp intellect and outstanding wit.

“No one should speak until she finishes her question. OK?, Now, you, ask me what you want to ask”. This was Atal Bihari Vajpayee, then Prime Minister, waiting for me to ask questions. The occasion was a get-together at the Raj Bhavan in Lucknow. As usual, when the Prime Minister entered the hall, it was mayhem. The journos jostled with each other to get him to talk to them. Myself, a young reporter, along with another one were pushed behind. I shouted “Vajpayee ji, Vajpayeeji”. He heard me and asked another journalist standing near him “Who is that girl, call her here.” There I was standing in front of him, after being pushed by others to the front row. “What happened,” he asked me with that warm smile. As always what I saw on his face was those smiling, shining eyes. Yes, Vajpayee used to smile through his eyes too. However, nervous me had nothing much to ask. I remember struggling to find the right question as I being a young reporter at a news agency – I was with Indo Asian News Service – never expected such an encounter with the Prime Minister.

Karnataka government tapping phones of political leaders, alleges BJP

Bengaluru : The BJP’s Karnataka unit on Thursday accused the HD Kumaraswamy government of tapping phones of political leaders across party lines fearing that a few disgruntled MLAs from the ruling CongressJDS coalition may resign. The government did not have belief in their own MLAs and alliance partners and was worried that leaders may “betray” them, BJP general secretary C T Ravi told reporters. “According to my information phone numbers of political leaders and MLAs from both opposition and ruling side are being tapped by this government through its officials and police department,” Ravi said responding to a question about reports that some MLAs from the ruling side may resign. There were reports that some disgruntled MLAs from the Congress party were in touch with BJP, with plans to bring down the government and thereby paving the way for the saffron party to stake claim. There

was no need for BJP to make any attempts to topple the government as preparations are already on within the coalition for it, Ravi

said. “Many coalition leaders, especially those from the Congress, are facing existential crisis,” he said. “In the state there is a daily wages government..ministers in this government are only concerned about their day-to-day gains,” he said and alleged that there was no trust and coordination within the coalition government.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee: A titan of Indian politics

Politicians are thick upon the ground in India. Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a rarer breed: a statesman. It was a stature he acquired despite himself at times. In a political life that spanned seven decades, he rose to become one of India’s most consequential prime ministers and a colossus of the Indian Right. His political life had four distinct stages. In the 1930s, K. B. Hedgewar’s Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was still in many respects a fledgeling organization, digesting diverse influences—from Bal Gangadhar Tilak and the Hindu Mahasabha to, most importantly, V. D. Savarkar. Vajpayee joined the organization towards the end of the decade. Under Hedgewar’s successor, M. S. Gowalkar, the RSS made a tactical choice to stay aloof from the mass movement for independence. Vajpayee had other ideas. In 1942, he jumped into the Quit India movement and was briefly arrested for it. This ability to step over the line when it came to party orthodoxy would come to be one of his greatest political strengths. When the Bharatiya Jana Sangh was formed in 1951, Vajpayee, along with Deendayal Upadhyaya and L. K. Advani, was sent by the RSS to build the party’s organizational strength. Over the next two decades, he would repeatedly display the other qualities that would elevate him: a canny political instinct and ruthless pragmatism. The former saw him progress from standing at power’s right hand—with both Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Upadhyaya—to the leadership of the Jana Sangh over two decades, picking up his first electoral victory in 1957 along the way. The latter was on display in his internecine struggle with Balraj Madhok for control of the party. Vajpayee’s victory was a defining fork in the road for the Indian Right, just after the high noon of Nehruvianism. Madhok was steeped in ideological orthodoxy. Vajpayee, in this second stage of his political career, was far less doctrinaire while managing to retain RSS support. Would the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) exist as it does today if the Madhok faction had won? It is debatable. Vajpayee, on the other hand, was able to broaden the Jana Sangh’s appeal, in tandem with the change brought about in the RSS by Madhukar Dattatreya Deoras. Vajpayee was helped by Indira Gandhi’s Emergency, during which he did jail time, and the RSS successfully entered the political mainstream. Vajpayee has been called the liberal mask over the hardline faction of the BJP. This is to give him too much and too little credit. His incendiary speech in Assam in 1983 during the state polls and his 1992 speech the day before the Babri Masjid’s demolition showed a politician willing to appeal to the public’s worst instincts.

Kalki Koechlin: We still discourage individual thought

Kalki Koechlin believes that the country’s youth is more independent and quite open about the choices they make. The actor has explored the life of young Indian adults in the 21st century in the new BBC World Services podcast, “Kalki Presents: My Indian Life”.

Saif Ali Khan marks 47th birthday with family, Kareena kisses him

New Delhi: The ‘Nawab’ of Bollywood, Saif Ali Khan ringed in his 47th birthday today with his wife and actress, Kareena Kapoor Khan and other family members. Like most celebrity parties, the actor also had a midnight birthday bash with Kareena, his sister-inlaw and actress Karisma Kapoor, his daughter Sara Ali Khan and son Ibrahim Ali Khan. His sister and actress Soha Ali Khan also joined the celebration along with her husband Kunal Kemmu. Taking to her Instagram account, New Delhi : Kalki Koechlin says mob mentality continues to thrive in India as independent thought is not given an environment to flourish in, something that can only change with education. With incidents of lynching and vandalism on the rise, the actor feels there is no state of “social security” in the country. “We have no social security. There is no system that’s protecting us actually. Everybody is each to their own here. No government force is going to come and help you… There’s so much population that it’s difficult to provide services to all. “I think that makes people communal. We still discourage the individual (thought). It’s still hard to find that individual voice. Take education for that matter – we still mug up, rather than thinking for

ourselves. There’s also this ignorance of ‘the other’. We are fine within our groups. That’s something that can only change with education,” The 34-yearold actor has explored the life of young Indian adults in the 21st century in the new BBC World Services podcast, “Kalki Presents: My Indian Life”. Bringing stories about “young Indians for young Indians” together, she says taking up the project was an eye-opening experience for her and helped her find different realities that make the country beautiful. She firmly believes that the youth will have to lead by example to change things for the better. “This was the first time I was doing a podcast. I got to know a lot about different people. I used to think I’m very knowledgeable and liberated.

Imtiaz Ali on doing film with Shahid: Ask person who told you, I never announced it Mumbai: Shahid Kapoor sent fans in a frenzy when he had said he would be teaming up with Imtiaz Ali for a film but the project never happened and the filmmaker says queries around the movie should not be directed to him as he never announced it in the first place. In December last year, Shahid had expressed excitement about his team up with his ‘Jab We Met’ director for a new film with an “interesting” subject. The actor had said he would start shooting for the same after wrapping up his upcoming release ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’. Soon after there were reports that the project was shelved and Shahid later told reporters that the film is “not happening this year” and they might “probably work on something else.” When asked about reports regarding the film with Shahid, Imtiaz said, “There will be more news like this because the fact is, I keep meeting actors

and there is always going to be some speculation...” “I never announced a film. I never said I am making a film. I never said I am working with Shahid Kapoor. So now when people ask me that the film is not happening, I reply, ‘Which film?’ I never said it. Jisne bola usko bolo (Talk to the person who spoke about it). There’s no truth to it,” the director said in a group interview. Imtiaz last directed Shah

Priyanka Chopra in Dostana 2?

Mumbai : Though Priyanka Chopra had announced that she wouldn’t be a part of the sequel to Dostana, rumour has it that she is likely to star in it after all. Sources say that Katrina Kaif, who was supposed to do the film along with Abhishek Bachchan and John Abraham, is no longer able to take the project up, and so the original Desi Girl may be asked to reprise her role.“Dostana 2 was announced 10 years ago,

after Airlift gave us the confidence to make many more films with Nikkhil and team, SMJ has created history for our association. Milap has made a blockbuster and that’s visible with the love and applause from the masses. These figures are the biggest of our joint association with Emmay and also a biggie for John and Manoj. We are extremely happy and thankful to the audiences, the actors and the entire SMJ team.” Nikkhil Advani says, “It’s been a highly emotional day for the entire team of SMJ watching the film with the audiences.

Rukh Khan starrer ‘Jab Harry Met Sejal’ and the filmmaker says he has currently written four stories and has developed two screenplays. “I have turned producer so I have to keep some material ready... The only asset that you have in this work is script. So once these four scripts are ready, depending up on the availability of the suitable actors, I will start working,” the director signed off.

Season 2 of Bose, possibly next year

and Katrina was roped in at that time. Now that the film is actually being made, Katrina’s dates are no longer available, because she has committed them to Salman Khan’s Bharat. So now the project has gone back to Priyanka,” a source says.Ironically, Katrina’s been roped in to do Bharat after Priyanka’s departure from the film. So this swap has a ring of poetic justice to it.

On the work front, Saif will be seen in the upcoming film ‘Baazaar’ which also stars Radhika Apte and Chitrangada Singh in axial roles and is set against the backdrop of stock trading. It is reportedly inspired by 2013 Hollywood flick, ‘The Wolf of Wall Street’.

Mumbai: Actor Rajkummar Rao, who plays Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in the ALTBalaji’s miniseries Bose: Dead/Alive, tells us that the success of the first season has encouraged the makers to start working on Season 2 at the earliest.“We are planning Season 2. But I have to shave my head and gain weight again for the role, and that’s a huge commitment. With the kind of work that I have lined up, I don’t think it will be possible to start filming for at least a year,” Rao says, adding, “The team is working on the scripting though.”The versatile actor who will soon be seen in the horrorcomedy film Stree, reveals that one genre that he isn’t comfortable doing is sex-comedy.“It depends on the script, but I personally don’t enjoy doublemeaning jokes. Man City’s Kevin De Bruyne suffers knee injury, to face lengthy spell on sidelines

Mumbai: India celebrated its 72nd Independence Day on Wednesday and not only fans but also sports personalities celebrated the historic occasion. Later on Thursday, Indian women’s cricket team ODI captain Mithali Raj took to Twitter and also wished her followers. Wishing India, freedom from hunger, poverty, discrimination, sexism, abuse & greed. We have had 72 years to build ourselves in the manner we want to be defined. Are we close? Lives were lost so we could breathe free. Let’s honour those sacrifices. Jai Hind,” she wrote. However, a troll soon

tried to pester her for her post which was a day late. But the legendary batswoman, who is not known to hold back (on and off the field) came up with a prompt reply. I’m honored that you think I’m a celebrity. I’m merely an athlete on national duty since 1999. We have the challengers trophy going on and I don’t have the phone with me on the field or off it on Match days. Hope that’s a good enough reason for the delay? Happy Independence Day. The 35-year-old is currently taking part in the Women’s Challenger Trophy in Bangalore, playing for India Blue.

New Delhi: If Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi brought princely demeanour to leadership in the swinging 60’s, Ajit Wadekar added a dash of middleclass stubbornness during the heady days of early 70’s. An astute thinker of the game with copybook technique of the famed ‘Bombay School of Batsmanship’, Wadekar was more than just the captain, who led India to twin series victories in England and the West Indies in 1971.The man who breathed his last in Mumbai on Wednesday played just 37 Tests

and had only one hundred against his name. But the numbers do not exactly tell the story of a cricketer, who possibly made Indian cricket captaincy a coveted job.Wadekar epitomised the ‘khadoos’ nature of Mumbai cricketers. When the late Vijay Merchant handed over the reins to Wadekar, little did anyone expect that an Indian team would be able to compete and win in alien conditions like England and the West Indies. He was lucky that a genius called Sunil Gavaskar’s arrival coincided with

his ascendancy to the hot seat, but he should get the credit for throwing a 21-year-old to the deep end of the pool.Add to it, his decision to form a four-pronged spin quartet with Bishan Singh Bedi, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar, Erapalli Prasanna and Srininvas Venkatraghavan. That attack formed the backbone of the Indian team.If Gavaskar was the hero in the West Indies, Wadekar unleashed Chandrasekhar on the Englishmen during a time which could be aptly called ‘That 70s show’.

New Study Shows Morning Snack of Almonds Offers Benefits to Breakfast-Skipping College Students

Ahmedabad : For parents sending their 18 year-old off to college for the first time, concerns about the food choices their young adults will make once out on their own are real. New and less healthy eating patterns tend to be the norm for those transitioning to college life . In fact, many college students tend to skip meals, mostly breakfast, while they transition to a more hectic independent lifestyle. And this is when unhealthy eating patterns start having adverse effects on our health. Breakfast is one of the most important

meals of the day. In fact, according to a scientific statement by the American Heart Association , daily breakfast consumption may decrease cardiometabolic risk factors including blood sugar and insulin metabolism. Among predominantly breakfast-skipping college students, including a morning snack – either of almonds or graham crackers – reduced total cholesterol and improved fasting blood sugar levels. But the benefits were greater with almonds. Those who snacked

on almonds better preserved HDL (good) cholesterol levels and improved measures of the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar over the course of the eight-week study. A new study from researchers at the University of California Merced, funded by the Almond Board of California and published in the journal Nutrients, suggests that for those college students who do skip breakfast, a morning snack of almonds – the ultimate easy grab and go to snack - is a smart option .

This Independence Day, come let’s take a pledge to save little Hearts Bengaluru : For the past 72 years, each and every one of us eagerly looks forward to the 15th of August. Although the event is marked by a single day, it holds a distinct place in each of our hearts. Over the years, the definition of freedom has evolved for everyone. While a teenager might associate freedom with his choice of subjects, a young woman would yearn for breaking free from the shackles of patriarchal society. Freedom for you and

I is a desire that we can survive without but choose to fight for. What, then can you think is freedom for an 11-year-old with a hole in her heart or for a two-year-old baby, who with a little activity runs out of breath? For these little ones, liberation is not a wish but a need. Quite a simple need as compared to our desires. A need to be cured from heart ailments that if not tended to at the right time can have life threatening repercussions.

Washington: Donald Trump revoked the security clearance of former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan Wednesday, warning several other prominent critics they too risk being blacklisted. In a highly unusually directive, Trump claimed that Brennan -- a former station chief in Riyadh who rose to lead the formidable spy agency -- had become “erratic.”Brennan is a frequent Trump critic. Just hours before this presidential edict, he accused Trump of failing “to live up to minimum standards of decency, civility, & probity.”Brennan, who has briefed Republican and Democratic presidents, could now lose access to classified information, a courtesy usually afforded to former senior officials. The White House has been besieged by a scandal over a former aide’s tell-all memoir in recent days and often tries to defuse crises by stoking new controversy. It said that eight other critical officials could also lose their clearances. They included former director of national intelligence James Clapper, former CIA director and four star general Michael Hayden and ex-FBI director James Comey. The group was accused -- without details -- of politicizing and monetizing their public service and security clearances.“Historically former heads of intelligence and law enforcement agencies have been allowed to retain access to classified information after their government service so that they can consult with their successors,” Trump’s statement read.“At this point in my administration, any benefits that senior officials might glean from consultations with Brennan are now outweighed by the risk posed by his erratic conduct and behaviour”.
