Cong and drought ‘twin brothers’, travel hand-in-hand: Modi in Rajasthan Barmer (Rajasthan): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday said the Congress Party and drought are ‘twin brothers’ as wherever the party goes, there is drought. Speaking at a function organised to start work on the Rs 43,129 crore Barmer oil refinery project in Barmer, Modi said drought and Congress walk hand-inhand and the state saw end of drought when the party was shown the door. Touching on the slugfest between ruling BJP and Congress over credit for the refinery, he said the Congress had only laid foundation stones for projects across the country to claim credit. Railway lines were announced just to claim short term popularity with projects never ever seeing the light, he said. Congress, he said,

had “hoodwinked” people by making just announcements. Modi said the Congress had seen his commitment to onerank-one-pension scheme for defence personnel and provided for Rs 500 crore in the interim budget just before the 2014 general elections to claim credit. “Barmer refinery was at least on papers, OROP wasn’t even on paper,” he said, adding that no ground work on the beneficiaries or on the outgo was ever done.

Attempts to kill, frame me in fake cases: Togadia after being found unconscious gns, Ahmedabad: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) international working president Pravin Togadia on Tuesday alleged that attempts are being made to frame him in fake cases. Addressing the media, Togadia moved to tears claiming that efforts have been made to silence his voice and not let him speak on issues like the Ram temple, welfare schemes for farmers and the law on cow slaughter. Togadia’s remark came a day after he had reportedly gone missing and was later found admitted in a hospital in Ahmedabad. “I am

being targeted for a decade old case; there is an attempt to suppress my voice,” he said while interacting with the media. He said that someone might be trying to get him killed in a fake

No Haj subsidy: Muslims didn’t benefit from it, says Naqvi New Delhi: The Union Minister of Minority Affairs on Tuesday announced the scrapping of Haj subsidy from this year. The subsidy is a means of financial support that the Centre grants to Indian Haj pilgrims in the form of discounted air fares on Indian Government owned carriers. Naqvi said that despite the subsidy withdrawal, a record number of 1.75 lakh Muslims will undertake the

pilgrimage from India this year. Naqvi also said that the Saudi Arabian government has in principle agreed to allow Haj journey from India by ships and officials of the two countries will sit together to finalise the modalities. “This is part of our policy to empower minorities with dignity and without appeasement,” Naqvi told reporters and cited a host of measures for the welfare of minorities. “Muslims didn’t benefit

from it. Development with dignity is what we believe in. The subsidy will be used for educating girls,” Naqvi further said. Earlier this

year, Naqvi had said that the Centre would abolish the subsidy for Haj pilgrims in accordance with a Supreme Court order.

Yogi Adityanath breaks 16-year-old myth, spends night at Agra circuit house gns, Lucknow : Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has broken a 16-year-old myth by spending a night at the Agra Circuit House — a place not chosen by any state Chief Minister for the last 16 years, officials said on Tuesday. The monkturned-politician also broke a 29-year-old myth by visiting Noida last year. The last Chief Minister to have stayed in the Agra Circuit Couse, a government accommodation, was Rajnath Singh who was here 16 years back. Incidentally, he lost his chair after the visit and none of his successors have dared to stay there since. Neither Mulayam Singh

Yadav, nor Mayawati and not even Akhilesh Yadav mustered the courage to stay at the circuit house for fear of losing power. They stayed at plush fivestar properties whenever in the Taj city. Adityanath stayed at suite number 1 at the circuit house and when he was asked about the jinx, he reportedly smiled and scoffed at it. He has in the past said that he did not believe in myths. Prime minister Narendra Modi also lauded the chief minister last month for not believing in myths. Adityanath is in Agra to receive Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife Sarah as they come to visit Taj Mahal on Tuesday.

Saffronisation of MP teachers

T he move by the state school education department to introduce saffron-coloured jackets for men and saris for women teachers is bound to raise eyebrows. The authorities have explained that the new dress code will provide government school teachers with a unique identity and help them feel proud of their work. Nothing can be more specious than such an argument as teaching has always been considered a noble profession and teachers are held in high esteem in the Indian society. In the great Indian tradition, the teachers hand down their knowledge to students that brings contentment to both sides. It does not require the regimentation of colour or appearances to add nobility to their act. It is said that the final choice of colour has not been made. But given the obsession of the ruling party and its frontal outfits with saffron, it is anyone’s guess how the selection process will end up. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan had courted controversy last year when he appeared at a university convocation sporting a saffron coloured turban and stole, while the students donned yellow turbans and stoles. There is nothing wrong with saffron as a colour. It is a great hue that conveys warmth, strength and courage, the qualities for which it has been used in the national tri-colour. But the way it is being used and misused in umpteen ways, not only in Madhya Pradesh but in all states ruled by the BJP, is nauseating. Recently, we had the curious case of the boundary wall of the Haj house in the capital of neighbouring Uttar Pradesh being painted in saffron, before it was restored to white in a jiffy. Buildings, walls and all imaginable surfaces are being painted with saffron. But all this pales into insignificance when compared to the saffronisation of mind that is being recklessly pursued in schools and institutions of learning. Last year, a team of academicians that reviewed the revised textbooks of Rajasthan state school board were anguished by the flaws and limitation of content in the said textbooks. The academicians, led by Prof Apoorvanand of Delhi Univ. and Prof Rajiv Gupta from the Rajasthan Univ., found that the textbooks contained several errors and limitations from a pedagogical point of view. Rajasthan has been in the forefront of saffronisation of text books. The textbooks for Class 10 and 12 introduced last year have only a passing reference to Mahatma Gandhi and no reference to Jawaharlal Nehru at all, while RSS ideologue Veer Savarkar has been given much larger space. The Political Science textbook for class 11 says that Congress was a ‘nurture baby’ of the British, established by the capitalists and representatives of the upper middle class. Let us hope saffronisation in Madhya Pradesh remains confined to only symbolism.

Deepika Padukone’s new badass cop look is a welcome change from Padmaavat Deepika Padukone’s period drama Padmaavat will finally see the light of day on January 25. And while she is gearing up for that, new photos of her badass avatar from an ad shoot in Mumbai have surfaced on social media. Dressed as a cop, Deepika can be seen wearing a crisp white shirt and khaki pants which is a welcome change from her regal looks in Padmaavat and the film’s promotions. Relaxing on the bonnet of a jeep with a neatly tied bun, looks like with her new look, Deepika is all set to give her alleged beau Ranveer Singh some tough competition considering we also saw Ranveer’s cop look a few days ago, in the poster for his upcoming Rohit Shetty film Simmba. The pictures are a clear proof of the fact that Deepika has it in her to nail every look that she takes up. Deepika’s next outing titled Padmaavat is directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Originally scheduled for a release on December 1 last year, the film’s release was delayed because of right-wing groups and the Central Board Of Film Certification. It was recently cleared by the CBFC with a U/A certificate and five modifications including the one that changes the title from Padmavati to Padmaavat. The film is now releasing on January 25 and fans are waiting with bated breath for Padmaavat.

And we have a great association with Luv and Ajay. We are delighted taking these relationships forward. Her being a great performer and her strong foothold in the south just made her our perfect package,” said the producer.

It’s the best time of my life, I love being in my 30s: Sonam A decade ago, when she made her foray into Bollywood, Sonam Kapoor would’ve never imagined coming a long way by herself. And if there’s one rule she swears by for being in the industry, it’s the fact that she’s fiercely personal about her personal life. While there are strong rumours about the fact that she will tie the knot with her rumoured beau Anand Ahuja soon, she wishes to keep mum about it. “I just feel like there’s a sanctity to your personal life, and I will never make it into a public discussion ever,” she asserts. “At least I will not be a part of it.” In an industry where actresses fear growing older, Sonam is proud to flaunt her age. Ask her how things have changed in the 10 years she’s been in the industry, and she says, “I’ve grown up a bit from the age of 21. I’m 32 now. It’s the best time of my life. I love being in my 30s!” Prod her, and she adds, “I think my late 20s were great. But the years from 26 to 32 have been an upward climb — slow and steady. It’s just been very, very enjoyable.”

Hichki actor Rani Mukerji: Hope Adira will be proud to have working parents Rani Mukerji went through the usual anxiety of a mother when she started Hichki after Adira’s birth, but the actor is confident that her daughter will one day be proud of her working parents. The actor said more than her, it was her filmmaker husband Aditya Chopra who wanted her to get back to the sets. “I had this anxiety about leaving my daughter at home because it was going to be a new environment for her. She is not going to see me for a few hours, which she is used to. It is a dilemma that every

working mother goes through where you face this anxiety,” Rani told news agancy in an interview. “The child will soon get used to it. I am sure

Adira will understand that both her parents leave home for work. It will be normal and it will be something that she will be proud of.” In India,

many working women leave their jobs after they embrace motherhood but Rani believes things are changing now as fathers are getting more involved in the upbringing of their children. “People are still not ready to accept it. It is a hesitation that they need to overcome. Obviously, a child is more attached to the mother. But now fathers are also getting involved.” The actor said society needs to do away with the stigma attached to men contributing in the house chores and child rearing.

Avengers Infinity War will have 76 characters Avengers Infinity War is considered to be one of the biggest films in terms of scale and scope. It is expected to bring together a number of characters from Marvel Cinematic Universe together for the first time to face the threat of Thanos. Although a part of Avengers franchise, it also has Guardians of the Galaxy and Doctor Strange among others on the ‘good’ side. It may be the first superhero film to match the scale of epic films like the Lord of the Rings and Star Wars. Now, though, we probably have a concrete number as to how many characters will be in the film finally. Chris Hemsworth, who plays the role for Thor in Marvel films and who recently donned the role in Thor: Ragnarok, said in an interview to The Toronto Sun, “This is one of the biggest things in film history and to be a part of it was just incredible. I think what these characters are about to face — with Thanos — there’s been nothing quite like it. There are 76 cast members or something like that. I think what people are going to be excited about is what I was excited about and that’s Thor meeting the Guardians and Iron Man meeting Doctor Strange.” Hemsworth also talked about the scale and size of the film, and the complications that invariably come with it.

Andrea Petkovic dumps Petra Kvitova out of the tournament after marathon Twice Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova’s return to the Australian Open a year after being attacked by an intruder at her home ended in disappointment with a marathon 6-3 4-6 10-8 first-round loss to German Andrea Petkovic on Tuesday. A former quarterfinalist at Melbourne Park, Kvitova missed last year’s event as she recovered from surgery to her left hand which was injured by a knife-wielding assailant weeks before the tournament. Kvitova showed she was back to a level approaching her dominant best with a last-eight appearance at the U.S. Open, but her clash with former top-10 player Petkovic ended in heartbreak after she double-faulted on match point when serving at 5-4 in the third set on Show Court Two. Petkovic saved another match point with a forehand winner to level at 5-5 and fought back from another break down. Serving to stay in the contest, 27th seed Kvitova suffered an attack of nerves, missing a straightforward volley before surrendering the match with her 10th double-fault and sixth of the set. The crowd groaned in disappointment, while Petkovic roared in triumph and Czech Kvitova walked off to warm applause in the twilight. “I just thought about not thinking and it worked,” Petkovic said of holding on during the nervous finish.

IPL 2018 auction: RCB will be stupid not to retain Chahal via RTM, says Sehwag Mumbai: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) surprised everyone in the Indian Premier League (IPL) retention event when they decided to retain young Sarfaraz Khan alongside team India skipper Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers, and left out the likes of Chris Gayle, Yuzvendra Chahal and KL Rahul for the auction, which will take place on January 27 and 28. Former swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag has called the franchisee ‘stupid’ to not retain the leg-spinner who is currently in good form in the shortest format. The 27-year-old leg spinner is the go-to guy for Kohli to break partnerships, while playing with him in RCB and international matches. “I don’t know at what price he (Chahal) will go but RCB will definitely use RTM for him. If they don’t, then they will be stupid,” Sehwag told Sportskeeda. Another big name missing from the list is West Indian powerhouse Chris Gayle. During the last year’s IPL, the Jamaican failed to get going and finished the tournament with only 200 runs.

Australian Open 2018: Roger Federer breezes through opener with win over Aljaz Bedene gns, Melbourne: Defending champion Roger Federer moved smoothly into his majestic stride with a straightsets win over Slovenian Aljaz Bedene in his opening match at the Australian Open on Tuesday. The 36-year-old Swiss turned the evening clash on packed Rod Laver Arena into an exhibition as he struck 41 winners to breeze past a willing but outclassed Bedene 6-3 6-4 6-3. The only time Federer looked remotely stumped came during a postmatch interview conducted by American comedian Will Ferrell who told him he had played like a “silky gazelle”. “Don’t they get eaten in the end?,” Federer ventured before being asked whether he was a witch or a vampire and whether his age-defying performances were down to a diet of wombat meat. “I was a bit scared,” Federer joked. “I‘m happy I

dodged some questions there.” While Ferrell provided some unexpected comedy, Federer again proved that when it comes to tennis he is king of the jungle. Any player hoping to stop him retaining his title and claiming a 20th grand slam will have to be pretty special on this

evidence. Federer looked just as imperious as when he won the last five games to beat Rafa Nadal in last year’s thrilling final and end a five-year wait for his 18th major. Poor Bedene, no mean performer at world number 51, can now at least say he has witnessed

Federer’s brilliance first hand, having never previously faced him. He played his part in entertaining exchanges but Federer, sporting a diagonal pink stripe on his immaculate white kit, was in one of those moods when he could strike winners at will.

Centurion: Virat Kohli inspired India’s fightback in the 2nd Test against South Africa in Centurion on Monday by scoring a scintillating 150. The Indian skipper brought up his 21st Test century overall and his second against the Proteas. Kohli celebrated his ton in his trademark style, by jumping and punching his fist in the air. A few moments later, as he added 50 runs more to his account, the 29-year-old resorted to a different celebration. The dashing right-hander took out a chain tied around his neck and kissed his wedding ring which was attached to it.

Novak Djokovic dismisses talk of boycott over prize money Novak Djokovic has distanced himself from reports that he called for a boycott of next year’s tournament unless there was an increase in prize money.

Six-times Australian Open champion Novak Djokovic has distanced himself from reports that he called for a boycott of next year’s tournament unless there was an increase in prize money.Media reports said the 30-year-old Serb, who is president of the Players’ Council, was pushing for a revolt over the way revenues from the four grand slams were distributed. The reports also suggested he had demanded officials from the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP), which runs the men’s Tour but not the grand slams, and Tennis Australia leave a players’ meeting on Friday. After his easy victory over American Donald Young on Tuesday, however, Djokovic set the record straight. “No boycott, no,” the former world number one replied when asked if he had threatened one. Not much of what you have wrote is true. What happened is that we, players, just wanted to have us players talk about certain topics. I don’t think there is anything unhealthy about that. This is one of the places where we get together. We wanted to use this opportunity to speak about certain subjects and see how everyone reacts to that, see what opinions are. There was no decisions being made. There was no talks about boycott or anything like that.”

SURAT: Three days after her husband died in a road accident, the textile businessman’s wife, allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the fifth floor of their apartment in City Light on Monday. Shweta Surekha, whose husband Anand, had died on Sachin-Magdalla Road near Vesu, died on the spot due to severe injuries. It is suspected that she jumped from the bathroom window. Some residents of the apartment, who were on the ground floor first noticed that a glass shattered on the ground. Soon, they saw Shweta coming out of the window and sensed something serious. Two persons even ran

to catch hold of her when she was falling, but their efforts were in vain. One of them suffered a fracture in the hand. Earlier, on January 13, Anand died reportedly after being crushed by an unidentified truck on Sachin-Magdalla highway near Vesu at around 8:30pm. Gujarat kite festival: 16 die; 4,026 birds injured; six flights delayed

gns, AHMEDABAD: Kite flying tradition on the occasion of Uttarayan has turned out to be a nightmare for humans and birds alike in Gujarat. At least 16 people died and scores of others sustained serious injuries in kite flying-related accident in Gujarat. While most victims died after their throats were slit by the glass-coated manjha, other deaths occurred when the people fell from terraces or were electrocuted while trying to catch kites. The celebrations turned out to be deadly for birds as well. In the two days of Uttarayan festivities, the forest department rescued and treated 4,026 birds, of which 214 died during treatment. The city reported 1,935 bird injuries, of which 139 birds died. Several NGOs were also involved in bird rescues in the state. Principal chief conservator of forest (wildlife) G K Sinha said, “This year 4,026 birds have been rescued and the number was less than in 2017. Last year,

there were 8,300 rescues.” Sinha said, “This year, Karuna Abhiyan has reached all talukas and reports from smaller towns or cities have been received. Moreover, around 20 lakh schoolchildren took pledges to save birds. We take this as a credit, as despite extensive coverage, the number of birds treated is less than last year.” At least six flights were delayed after Chinese lanterns, kites and traditional tukkals fell on the runway at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad since Sunday. Airport authorities had to constantly ensure that the approach or the funnel of the runway was clear before they allowed any flights to take off or land. Police and airport authorities have repeatedly warned of cut kites and paper lanterns coming in the path of landing aircraft. In several instances in the past, kites and flying lanterns came in the path of an aircraft.

Tensions have been high after North staged a flurry of nuclear and missile tests and traded threats of war and personal attacks with Trump.

‘Positive changes’ in Korean Peninsula, Xi Jinping tells Trump Beijing: Chinese president Xi Jinping told his US counterpart Donald Trump that there have been “positive changes” on the Korean peninsula, state media said on Tuesday following a phone call between the two leaders. Trump has pushed Xi to increase economic and political pressure on North Korea in the hopes of convincing it to stop the development of its nuclear weapons program. Tensions have been high after the North staged a flurry of nuclear and missile tests and leader Kim Jong-Un traded threats of war and personal attacks with Trump. But in recent weeks there has been an apparent rapprochement, with the two Koreas meeting for the first time in two years and Pyongyang agreeing to send athletes to the

Pyeongchang Winter Olympics in South Korea. In the phone call, Xi “pointed out that the situation on the Korean peninsula has shown some positive changes,” according to the official Xinhua news service. “All sides concerned should make joint efforts to keep up the hard-won momentum for the easing of the situation on the Korean peninsula and create conditions to restart talks,” he was quoted as saying. The call comes as foreign ministers from 20 nations gathered in Vancouver

to hold two-day crisis talks on North Korea’s ballistic missile and nuclear weapons programs. But the US, which at the summit will review with its allies the effectiveness of current sanctions against the hermit kingdom and explore adding more, remains sceptical that Kim is ready to negotiate away his weapons program. China has criticised the Vancouver talks -- hosted by the US and Canada and which exclude both Beijing and Moscow -- and called for sanctions discussions to remain within the United Nations framework. During Xi’s phone call with Trump, he also urged the US president, who has taken a hard line against the trade imbalance between the two countries, to come to the table on economic issues.

Rohingya deal aims to repatriate refugees ‘within 2 years’ gns, Yangon: Myanmar and Bangladesh have agreed to repatriate Rohingya displaced by an army crackdown “within two years”, Dhaka said on Tuesday, outlining the first clear timeline for a return of hundreds of thousands of refugees. The agreement says the process will be “completed preferably within 02 (two) years from the commencement of repatriation”, according to a statement from the Bangladeshi government following talks in Myanmar’s capital Naypyidaw. The deal applies to Rohingya who fled Myanmar in two major outbreaks of violence since October 2016, when militants from the stateless Muslim minority first attacked borderguard posts in northern Rakhine state. It does not cover Rohingya refugees who were living in Bangladesh prior to that date who the UN estimates number at 200,000. “During this two-day

US trying to convince us India not a threat: Pak Defence Min

gns, Islamabad: The US had been trying to convince Pakistan that India was not a threat to it and Islamabad should change its strategic stance towards New Delhi, Defence Minister Khurram Dastagir Khan said. He also said that it is time for a courteous yet “ruthlessly candid dialogue” with the US “with everything on the table” to remove all misunderstandings between Islamabad and Washington. Reading out a policy statement on the government’s foreign policy contours and the security situation in Pakistan in the National Assembly on Monday, he regretted that the US downplayed India’s aggressive posturing along the Line of Control (LoC) and Working

Boundary, the Dawn reported on Tuesday. The minister said the perception of India was one of the foundational divergences between Pakistan and the US. “It’s time for a courteous yet ruthlessly candid dialogue between Pakistan and the US with everything on the table,” Khan said. He said that Washington had been trying to convince Pakistan that India was not a threat and, therefore, Islamabad should change its strategic stance. “But the truism remains true. Both India’s capacity and intents are today hostile towards Pakistan,” he alleged. Pakistan accuses India of using Afghan soil for carrying out hostile activities against it, a charge India has dismissed.

meeting, we agreed on the form that refugees will have to fill to be able to come back to Myanmar,” Mohammad Sufiur Rahman, Bangladesh ambassador in Myanmar told news agancy.“We should be able to start the process in the coming days,” he said, but added Myanmar’s stated deadline of next week for starting Rohingya repatriation was “not possible”. The agreement follows a pact between the countries in November paving the way for

repatriations from January 23, a deadline that is likely to slip given the logistical challenges of the cross-border operation. Myanmar has faced intense diplomatic pressure to allow the safe return of Rohingya refugees driven out by its army. But many Rohingya in crowded camps in Bangladesh say they are reluctant to return to Rakhine state having fled atrocities including murder, rape and arson attacks on their homes.
