Gujarat Assembly Elections 2017: BJP Looks at Gujarat polls: AAP releases second list for nine assembly seats Tribal Votes to Recover from Patidar Setback AAPofinhasthecandidates declared the names of candidates for 20 assembly seats out of the total 182 state, where elections will be held in two phases on December 9 and 14 ⁄ The reason the BJP is feeling confident, despite the tide of Patidar resentment, is that the saffron party plans to expand its footprint in the tribal belt of South Gujarat

In November last year, BJP President Amit Shah was in Surat to address a meeting when it was disrupted. The meeting made news because a handful of youth from the Patidar community flung chairs at the venue. “What went unnoticed that day was that Shah drove an hour east after that to the town of Vyara in Tapi district. Here, he addressed thousands of BJP workers, most of whom

NEWS BRIEF NIA to probe killing of RSS leader in Ludhiana Agency | New Delhi

The NIA will probe the killing of an RSS leader in Punjab following a recommendation by the state government, a home ministry official said. The decision has been taken following a recommendation of the Punjab government, the official said. SC refuses to stay Raj govt bill on OBC reservation Agency | New Delhi

The Supreme Court has refused to stay the Rajasthan government bill on reservation for the Other Backward Castes but said the authorities should ensure no decision was taken that could result in crossing the total reservation beyond 50 per cent. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud set aside the November 9 order of the Rajasthan High Court by which it had stayed the OOBC Reservation Bill, 2017.

were from Scheduled Tribes. This was significant because it is a shift in Gujarat politics. The BJP now wants to pull tribals away from the Congress,” said tribal activist Romel Sutariya. A BJP leader from South Gujarat, when asked if the ruling party was worried about losing support among the influential Patidars after Hardik Patel’s agitation, said, “It is true that some Patidars will break away from us. They won’t

desert us completely but it would not be wise to underestimate the agitation’s effect. We will certainly lose some of the Patel vote but we are confident of making up the deficit.” The reason the BJP is feeling confident, despite the tide of Patidar resentment, is that the saffron party plans to expand its footprint in the tribal belt of South Gujarat. Scheduled Tribes such as Bhils, Vasavas and Gamits make up around 14%

of Gujarat’s population. This is a section of society too large for any political party to ignore. While Adivasis do not exactly vote as one single bloc, they have traditionally remained in the Congress camp. After all, the state’s only Adivasi Chief Minister, Amarsinh Chaudhari, was a Congressman. Meanwhile, the BJP has maintained a steady presence in the region but has always trailed the Grand Old Party. The state has a 182 constituencies in the Vidhan Sabha. In the 2007 Gujarat Assembly polls, there were 20 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Of these, the Congress won 11 seats, the BJP won 8 and the remaining seat was captured by the JD (U). After

delimitation of constituencies in 2008, the number of seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes went up to 26. In the 2012 polls, BJP won 10 seats, Congress won 15 and the JD (U) retained its seat. Among tribals, BJP has always been the laggard, but the party is planning to change that. On Thursday, Shah was in Bardoli to address around 1,200 party workers from Surat and Tapi districts. Once again, the BJP top boss reached out to Adivasis. “Tribals’ development in true sense happened only after the BJP came to power in Gujarat. Congress has always used Adivasis as their vote bank. But now this has become a thing of the past,” he reportedly said.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday released its second list of candidates for nine assembly constituencies for the upcoming Gujarat elections, nearly a month after announcing its nominees for 11 seats. With this, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has declared the names of candidates for 20 assembly seats out of the total 182 in the state, where elections will be held in two phases on De-

cember 9 and 14. The results will be out on December 18. As per the second list, the AAP has decided to contest from Gandhinagar (North), Botad, Katargam, Rajkot (East), Surat (East), Karanj, Palanpur, Gandhidham and Jamnagar Rural), party spokesperson Harshil Nayak said. Three of these seats — Rajkot (East), Palanpur, and Jamnagar (Rural) — are currently being held by Congress MLAs, while the remaining

six are with the BJP. The candidates finalised to contest from these seats are Gunvant Patel (Gandhinagar-North), Jilubhai Bavaliya (Botad), Nagajibhai Ambaliya (Katargam), Ajit Lokhil (Rajkot-East), Salim Multani (Surat-East), Jignesh Mehta (Karanj), Ramesh Nabhani (Palanpur), Govind Danicha (Gandhidham) and Paresh Bhanderi (Jamnagar-Rural). The AAP has also replaced its candidate, declared in the first list, for the Bapunagar constituency after receiving complaints against him, Nayak said. The approval by the Cabinet paves the way for immediate establishment of the apex body, which is mandated to ensure

that the benefits of GST rate reduction is passed on to consumers. A five-member committee, headed by Cabinet Secretary P K Sinha, comprising Revenue Secretary Hasmukh Adhia, CBEC Chairman Vanaja Sarna and chief secretaries from two states, has been entrusted to finalise the chairman and members of the authority. The authority will have a sunset date of two years from the date on which the chairman assumes charge. The chairman and the four members of the authority have to be less than 62 years.

Despite note ban, Narendra Modi remains overwhelmingly popular

Nearly nine out of 10 Indians hold a favourable opinion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and more than two-thirds are satisfied with the direction he is taking the country, a Pew survey has found, two years before he heads into a general election. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition won the biggest parliamentary majority in three decades in a 2014 election and the poll by the U.S.based research centre showed that his personal ratings remain high. Critics have accused hardline Hindu groups linked to the ruling coalition of promoting a partisan agenda, including targeting minority Muslims, since he came to power. They have also blamed Modi for slowing economic growth and for failing to generate the hundreds of thousands of jobs needed for young people joining the workforce each month. But the Pew poll found that 88 per cent of Indians held a favourable view of Modi, a shade higher than the 87 per cent who gave him a thumbs-up in 2015, a year after he swept to power promising to transform India into a high-growth economy. Such high ratings are unusual for political leaders three years into office in south Asia, where governments are more often voted out than retained as people become frustrated with broken campaign promises. Modi’s favourable rating is 31 percentage points higher than that of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the main opposition Congress party, and is 30 points more than that for her son and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who is expected to take over the party leadership. “Three years into Modi’s five-year tenure, the honeymoon period for his administration may be over but the public’s love affair with current conditions in India is even more intense,” Pew said in comments on its findings. The survey was conducted in February and March, a few months after Modi withdrew most high-value bank notes in a shock move aimed at illegal wealth, but which put millions of people in difficulty as cash was sucked out of the economy. Modi defended the measure as an attack on the rich hiding their wealth from the taxman and said gains would come to the poor. Economic growth eased to a three-year low in the June quarter and experts said part of the reason was that the withdrawal of most of the currency had hurt consumer demand in a largely cash-driven economy.

Hollywood-Bollywood Padmavati Star Deepika Padukone Is To Die For In These 6 Outfits Agency | New Delhi

Deepika Padukone is killing it style-wise, one outfit at a time. The 31-year-old actress began promoting her new film Padmavati a while ago and she’s been a dream to look at in a series of utterly fabulous outfits. Padmavati, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is a few weeks away from release - December 1 is the ETA - which means we can hopefully look forward to some more great ensembles. Deepika’s stylist Shaleena Nathani dutifully logs each look on Instagram - so thanks, Shaleena - and we’ve grabbed the chance to round them up for you (because we’re nice like that). If latest appearances are anything to go, by then Deepika Padukone is equally fabulous in ethnic outfits as she is in high-octane designer gowns as seen at international events like the Met Gala. We’ll start this list with the stunning cream and gold striped Raw Mango sari she just appeared in - if you look closely, the blouse is also striped. Deepika, who plays the title role of Rani Padmini in Padmavati, preceded the Raw Mango number

with a Bibhu Mohapatra dress in black and coral distinguished by voluminous sleeves and a train. This outfit, courtesy Prabal Gurung, is an example of how there some things that look good only on the likes of Deepika Padukone. The hibiscus top has a single sleeve but one that is high on drama, the paler pink pants are cinched in with a wide patent leather belt. This easy breezy dress reflects Deepika’s love for white and boho-chic. The dress is by designer Pratima Pandey and all Deepika needed with it were silver earrings. Deepika Padukone opened promotions for Padmavati in another Raw Mango sari, this one in a floral print. The blouse, also from Raw Mango, has net sleeves.

SPORTS ROUNDUP Indian Premier League 2018: Chennai Super Kings End Suspense Over Suresh Raina’s Retention Agency | New Delhi

Agency | New Delhi

Cricket Australia’s chief executive James Sutherland has issued a warning that Test cricket’s value might well be taking a downward curve. Stating that in some parts of the world the situation is really desperate, Sutherland maintained that the reason behind this is the lack of commercial viability. However, he did praise the new league system and expressed hope that it will create relevance and generate interest. Speaking to The Grade Cricketer podcast, Suther-

land said, “In many ways there’s so much doubt about Test cricket and its future I think and in some parts of the world it really is in a desperate state. That’s partly because it’s just not commercially viable,” he said. “There are some really significant warning signals in some parts of the world.” Referring to the Indian market, he said, “As a starting point if you go to India, the country where there is supposedly the most lucrative commercial market, the current valuations

on a Test match, five days of Test cricket, is exactly the same as the valuation on a three-hour Twenty20 international match. That’s a perspective on what the market in the biggest country in the cricketing world sees as the value of Test cricket, and that has a significant flow-on impact to other countries.” “So the alarm bells are ringing for Test cricket and that’s one of the reasons why I think this context around Test cricket is so important with this league championship,” he added.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK), one of Indian Premier League’s (IPL) most successful teams, are all set to return to the competition in 2018 after a two-year suspension. Ahead of the 11th season of the cashrich league, the CSK franchise finds itself in a rather tricky position. The IPL Governing Council is expected to announce the retention policy, going into the next season, in a week’s time. The teams are likely to be allowed to retain two Indians and one overseas player. According to several media reports, the CSK want to retain MS Dhoni, Ravichandran Ashwin and Faf du Plessis. Considering star left-hander Suresh Raina’s record playing for Chennai, several fans were not

exactly pleased after these reports surfaced. The reaction of the supported compelled the franchise to issue a clarification. Prior to CSK’s suspension, Dhoni and Raina were among the few players to have represented the same franchise through the eight seasons. In a sense, the local fans saw Dhoni as Batman and Raina as Robin during their

hugely successful run in the series. ”We are going to propose minimum 3 retentions --1 Indian and 2 foreigners. The players, who played for Pune and Gujarat in last two years can be retained by Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals. We will place it infront of owners during workshop next month,” an IPL GC member said last month.

Former England Under-19 captain Shiv Thakor was found guilty by a court on Wednesday of allegedly exposing himself to two women on a housing estate. According to AFP, 24-year-old Thakor, a professional cricketer with English county side Derbyshire, was arrested in July after the two offences in Mackworth, Derby, on June 12 and June 19. He was convicted of both offences and granted unconditional

bail until his sentencing on November 24. Moreover, during a police interview, the Southern One Derbyshire Magistrates Court was told that Thakor said he had already been “sexually satisfied” by his “16-year-old girlfriend” so would not have committed the offences. Thakor had denied exposing him-

self and intending to cause alarm or distress at a previous hearing in the same court. Giving evidence, the first witness said Thakor was “very quiet” and “very well-mannered”, adding: “He knew exactly what he was doing.” Thakor later explained that he has “got a tendency” to “rearrange” himself at “the front and back during games.” “I have got a tendency,” Thakor is quoted as saying by said, “That is almost a running joke, that I tend to rearrange myself both at the front.

In his heydays, MS Dhoni was known to hit sixes that would go many a mile into the stands. Even now, in the twilight of his sixes, any ball that Dhoni manages to connect properly when he is swinging the bat is guaranteed to be lodged in the stands or beyond. Dhoni revealed

that the reason why he towered over the bowlers the way he did was that he used to be youngest player himself when he was playing cricket in his colony as a kid. “We lived in a colony and were only two or three of us that were of the same age group, the other children were at least five or six years older to us,” Dhoni is quoted as saying by

Ace Indian shuttlers Saina Nehwal and HS Prannoy crashed out in the second round of the China Open Super Series after suffering straight game defeats in their respective events on Thursday. While Saina lost 1821 11-21 against her Japanese nemesis and fifth seed Akane Yamaguchi in the women’s singles second round, world no. 11 Prannoy was stunned by 53rd ranked

Cheuk Yiu Lee of Hong Kong 21-19 21-17 in the men’s singles event. It was a disappointment for both Saina and Prannoy, especially after the two shuttlers had won the women’s and men’s singles titles respectively at the recently-concluded National badminton championships. Their exits leave second-ranked PV Sindhu as the lone Indian player in the fray. She will take the court later in the day against

Yue Han of China. For Saina, the match against Yamaguchi was always expected to be a tricky one considering her inferior head-to-head record against the Japanese. Before the start of today’s match, Saina trailed Yamaguchi one to three in headto-head record with their three previous results going in the Japanese favour and the trend continued. Saina, thus, suffered her fourth defeat against Yamaguchi

this year. The London Olympic bronze-medallist, who won the title here in 2014, got

off to a positive start to take a slender 11-9 lead. But Yamaguchi fought hard to pock-

et the first game 2118. Down by a game, Saina’s game started to deteriorate. She lacked momentum in the second game and never looked in the mental frame to make a comeback, even as Yamaguchi comfortably took control of the proceedings. The Japanese never looked in trouble after taking the first game and did not fall behind for a single moment in the second game as she sealed the match with consummate ease in just 37 minutes.

SS News | Ahmedabad

Rajasthan Congress chief Sachin Pilot on Wednesday accused the BJP-led governments in his state and Gujarat of shying away from their responsibility to take action against cow vigilantes and said such elements were now terrorising the people. Speaking about a recent incident in Alwar district of Rajasthan, where a man was shot dead allegedly by cow vigilantes, Pilot claimed

that Vasundhara Raje, the chief minister of the state, was in that district when the incident took place. ”Such incidents (involving cow vigilantes) are surfacing on a regular basis, be it

in Gujarat or Rajasthan. These incidents are condemnable and I believe that those in the government are shying away from their responsibility,” he told mediapersons on his arrival at the

airport on Wednesday. “The entire country is talking about how gau-rakshaks (cow vigilantes) are terrorising people. In Rajasthan, crimes such as murder, abduction, rape and robbery have become routine affairs. These crimes are happening right under the nose of the government. The Rajasthan chief minister was in that district when the firing incident took place,” Pilot said. He was responding to a que-

ry about the alleged killing of Umar Khan (35) in the Ramgarh area of Alwar district recently. Khan’s body was found near the railway tracks in Ramgarh on 11 November, with his family members and activists alleging that he was shot dead by cow vigilantes while he was ferrying cattle in a vehicle the day before. “No one is allowed to take the law into their hands.
