While Adivasis do not exactly vote as one single bloc, they have traditionally remained in the Congress camp. After all, the state’s only Adivasi Chief Minister, Amarsinh Chaudhari, was a Congressman. Meanwhile, the BJP has maintained a steady presence in the region but has always trailed the Grand Old Party. The state has a 182 constituencies in the Vidhan Sabha. In the 2007 Gujarat Assembly polls, there were 20 seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes. Of these, the Congress won 11 seats, the BJP won 8 and the remaining seat was captured by the JD (U). After
delimitation of constituencies in 2008, the number of seats reserved for Scheduled Tribes went up to 26. In the 2012 polls, BJP won 10 seats, Congress won 15 and the JD (U) retained its seat. Among tribals, BJP has always been the laggard, but the party is planning to change that. On Thursday, Shah was in Bardoli to address around 1,200 party workers from Surat and Tapi districts. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Thursday released its second list of candidates for nine assembly constituencies for the upcoming Gujarat elections, nearly a month after announcing its nominees for 11 seats. With this, the Arvind Kejriwal-led party has declared the names of candidates for 20 assembly seats out of the total 182 in the state, where elections will be held in two phases on De-

Despite note ban, Narendra Modi remains overwhelmingly popular
Nearly nine out of 10 Indians hold a favourable opinion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and more than two-thirds are satisfied with the direction he is taking the country, a Pew survey has found, two years before he heads into a general election. Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led coalition won the biggest parliamentary majority in three decades in a 2014 election and the poll by the U.S.based research centre showed that his personal ratings remain high. Critics have accused hardline Hindu groups linked to the ruling coalition of promoting a partisan agenda, including targeting minority Muslims, since he came to power. They have also blamed Modi for slowing economic growth and for failing to generate the hundreds of thousands of jobs needed for young people joining the workforce each month. But the Pew poll found that 88 per cent of Indians held a favourable view of Modi, a shade higher than the 87 per cent who gave him a thumbs-up in 2015, a year after he swept to power promising to transform India into a high-growth economy. Such high ratings are unusual for political leaders three years into office in south Asia, where governments are more often voted out than retained as people become frustrated with broken campaign promises. Modi’s favourable rating is 31 percentage points higher than that of Congress president Sonia Gandhi, the leader of the main opposition Congress party, and is 30 points more than that for her son and Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi, who is expected to take over the party leadership. “Three years into Modi’s five-year tenure, the honeymoon period for his administration may be over but the public’s love affair with current conditions in India is even more intense,” Pew said in comments on its findings. The survey was conducted in February and March, a few months after Modi withdrew most high-value bank notes in a shock move aimed at illegal wealth, but which put millions of people in difficulty as cash was sucked out of the economy. Modi defended the measure as an attack on the rich hiding their wealth from the taxman and said gains would come to the poor. Economic growth eased to a three-year low in the June quarter and experts said part of the reason was that the withdrawal of most of the currency had hurt consumer demand in a largely cash-driven economy.

35 kg of cannabis seized from 2 persons in Jammu

The Narcotic Control Bureau (NCB) foiled a smuggling bid here and seized nearly 35 kg of cannabis from two persons, a top official said today. “We have arrested two persons, residents of south Kashmir, and recovered 35 kg of cannabis from them on the intervening night of November 15 and 16,” NCB Zonal Director (J&K) Manoj Kumar told reporters
here. The accused were transporting the consignment from Anantnag to Nasik, he said, adding that they hid the cannabis under the seats of their vehicle. Further investigation was underway, he said. Nearly 115 kg of cannabis has been recovered in eight cases in the state this year. Singh said investigators were also searching for terror links in narcotic funding.
