(Express photo by Tashi Tobgyal)The poetpolitician, who breathed his last on Thursday, left his admirers and critics in tears as he had earned respect as a ‘gentle giant’ who was always soft-spoken. Vajpayee’s last journey witnessed a sea of people, including top politicians and common folk who

followed the cortege. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP president Amit Shah walked with the funeral procession as many struggled to catch the last glimpse of the leader. The mortal remains were taken from BJP headquarters to Smriti Sthal in the afternoon. The distance between BJP headquarters and Smriti Sthal is about 4 kilometers. Mourners jostled and some even climbed trees on the way to capture the moment on their phones. People from across the country, who gathered outside the BJP headquarters, bore testimony to the fact that Vajpayee was loved by all for his empathetic nature and ability to combine accommodative politics with graciousness.

Vajpayee and his father were classmates in Kanpur!

In 1945, when a 21-yearold Atal Bihari Vajpayee enrolled in a Kanpur college to study law, he had a classmate who was already retired after serving 30 years as a teacher. He was none other than his father. Pandit Krishna Biharilal Vajpayee was above 50 when he became Vajpayee’s classmate at DAV college Kanpur. After Vajpayee became prime minister, his alma mater published a writeup by him in the college magazine in 2002-03.

The Uttar Pradesh government Friday identified 40 rivers and their tributaries spread across 75 districts for the immersion of the ashes of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who died on Thursday. The government said that separate events marking the immersion of ashes will be organised in each of these district so that people from all these areas get an opportunity “to be part of Atal’s last journey”. “He (Atal) had a major contribution to the state, so the government has decided to give opportunity to people in every district to be part of his last journey. As per the initial programme, an event would be held in each of the 75 districts before his ashes are immersed in the rivers flowing through it,” said Chief Secretary Anoop Chandra Pandey.

India salutes you Atal Ji!,” Modi tweeted today as the former prime minister’s mortal remains were consigned to flames here. Earlier in a blog, Modi said India had found a leader in Vajpayee who was gifted in spirit, heart and mind.

Imran Khan defeats Shahbaz to become Pakistan’s new PM, to take oath tomorrow

Islamabad : Cricketer-turnedpolitician Imran Khan Friday defeated Shahbaz Sharif to become Pakistan’s next prime minister after the grand opposition alliance fell apart over the PML-N chief’s nomination for the top post. The election in the 15th National Assembly became just a formality after the Pakistan Peoples Party-led by Bilawal Bhutto Zardari with 54 seats abstained from voting. Khan, who is the chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), received 176 votes while his only rival and the Pakistan Muslim LeagueNawaz (PML-N) chief Sharif got 96 votes. Imran Khan will take the oath tomorrow. A total of 172 votes in the 342-member lower house of Parliament are needed to form a government. His supporters celebrated across the country when Speaker Asad Qaiser announced result. In his first speech to lawmakers as premier, Khan dismissed allegations of election fraud and vowed to enforce “ruthless accountability” to combat corruption. Khan is a former Oxford graduate and formed his party in 1996 in the eastern city of Lahore, vowing to forge a corruption-free “new Pakistan” with justice for all without discrimination.

We still don’t know whether Uber is a real business In March, Uber will turn 10 years old. On paper, it’s one of the world’s most highly valued companies. Uber has become a verb for rides on demand, changed the transportation habits of millions and pushed changes in city planning around the world. But after a decade of operation and perhaps a year or so away from its initial public offering, an essential unanswered question remains: Is Uber viable? Put aside questions about whether Uber is overvalued, evil or whatever other clouds exist. I’m talking about simple dollars and cents. Uber Technologies Inc. has burned through more than $1 billion in cash in the last year, by design, and continues to fund itself with the huge capital pools available for young superstar companies since about 2010. If all that cash from SoftBank, Saudi Arabian oil wealth, conventional tech investment funds—or even cash from future public stockholders —unexpectedly dries up, does Uber’s business model work? I don’t know, and almost no one else does either. There are always questions about whether relatively young companies will have staying power, but because Uber has never had to finance itself solely with the cash generated by its businesses, questions about the company’s basic viability are even more urgent. I’ve written before that Uber has sensibly tailored its business strategy to the financial realities of the last eight or so years of financial markets. Never before has so much money been thrown at promising young technology companies, and for good reason. People with money are desperate to make more money, and private technology companies have been an appealing way to turn $1 into $10 or $100. If Uber had started just a few years earlier, it might have been confined to its original business of dispatching luxury cars. Instead, Uber has taken in more than $15 billion from stock sales and borrowings, and that cash has let Uber dream big. It offers semi-professional drivers at the tap of a smartphone screen in dozens of global cities, has branched into transportation by bicycles and has visions of robot-driven cars and flying taxis. It’s investing in food delivery, matching supply and demand for freight and more. Uber’s cash has let it become this ambitious, but it’s never been forced to live in a world where it has to operate solely with the cash it generates. The company’s free cash flow— or cash generated by its operations minus costs for capital projects— was negative $1.3 billion in the last 12 months, according to Bloomberg News and other media reports on the company’s selfreported, cherry-picked financial figures. For the sake of comparison to a recent but dramatically different era in technology, Facebook had positive free cash flow for three full years when it filed to go public in 2012.

Don’t want to limit myself to only women-oriented films, says Kajol

After her last outing “Dilwale”, Kajol is excited about “Helicopter Eela”, in which she plays the role of a single mother.

Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’ team have finally released their first song.

Batti Gul Meter Chalu song Gold Tamba has Sholay and Kuch Kuch Hota Hai connect

Mumbai: Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor starrer ‘Batti Gul Meter Chalu’ team have finally released their first song ‘Gold Tamba’.The lyrics sound like “When you getting Gold, why go for tamba?” which is topped by Shahid Kapoor’s funny

Mumbai: Womenoriented films are gaining momentum in Bollywood but Kajol says it would be restrictive as an actor to limit herself to just one genre.“There are lots of films coming your way that are being written with a female central character in mind. It also has to do with whether you want to do that kind of film or not. I don’t want to do only that kind of film. I want to do everything,” she told PTI in an interview. “There is very little good content being written. I think it is the fact that there are not many good scripts that are coming to you.

But generally there is not much good writing happening per se,” she added. After her last outing “Dilwale” in 2015, Kajol is excited about her forthcoming release “Helicopter Eela”, in which she plays the role of a single mother. The Pradeep Sarkar directed film addresses the issue of parenting and generation gap but Kajol says the film also talks about “who we are as women”. Being a mother, Kajol said, there were times when she missed out things individually as she was busy fulfilling her responsibility as a parent.

How Jacqueline Fernandez lost Bharat to Katrina Kaif

Mumbai: We’ve all heard tales of the cold war between Jacqueline Fernandez and Katrina Kaif. Now we hear that Jacqueline was vying for the role in Bharat that eventually went to Katrina.A close friend of the actress spills the beans, saying, “The minute Jacqueline

heard about Priyanka Chopra’s exit from Bharat, she sprung into action. She sent Salman and director Ali Abbas Zafar feelers through mutual friends, and when that didn’t work, she directly approached Salman and offered to step into PC’s shoes.” What happened to her

generous offer? “Nothing,” says the source, adding, “I think Salman ignored Jacqueline’s offer. It was too soon after the unexpected debacle that was Race 3. I think he needed a break from that pairing. Besides, Katrina was his first choice for the film anyway.

expressions. But what especially caught our attention is the reference to ‘Sholay’. There is a place where Shahid’s character mouths, “When you getting Gabbar, why go for Samba?” which actually makes us LOL because it is so on point! And that

Katrina Kaif heads to Malta to kickstart Salman Khan starrer Bharat

Mumbai: Katrina Kaif begins her journey of Bharat as she headed to Bharat today to kickstart the shoot of the Salman Khan starrer film. While the film went on floors earlier last month, Katrina Kaif begins her first schedule now.The actress posted an Instagram story announcing her departure for Malta. Katrina’s Instagram photo story. Katrina’s Instagram photo story. Bharat recently wrapped the first schedule of the film which included action sequences and daredevil stunts with fire for both Salman Khan and Disha Patani. The first schedule included a grand circus sequence wherein Salman Khan was seen doing a bike stunt amidst a ring if fire, while Disha Patani plays a trapeze artist. The team also shot for a song choreographed by Vaibhavi Merchant.

After Capoeira, Sushant Singh Rajput now trains for Ironman Triathlon

Mumbai: Sushant Singh Rajput seems to be in experimental mode! After taking up directing, he is living his dreams. One such dream happened to be an expert in Capoeira, a form of Brazilian martial arts combining elements of dance, selfdefence, acrobatics and music. He had previously undergone training with Tony Jaa, a Buddhist monk, who is a very well known martial artist, actor,

Despite the gap in their box office collections, the difference in footfalls boils down to just about five per cent.“It is quite historical,” says trade analyst Atul Mohan, adding, “This clearly proves that if the content is good, there will be people to watch the film. The figures show that the films have not eaten into each other’s box office figures. Both of them have their own audiences, and the overlap is not much. I think, in the future too, multiple films should release together on holidays. As long as they have good content, they have nothing to worry about.

Will Karisma Kapoor call Salman Khan to get “Mental”?

action choreographer, stuntman, and director. And the actor’s latest obsession is to participate in the Ironman triathlon, a one of its kind series that involves 2.4 miles swim, a 112-mile bicycle ride and a marathon of 26.22 miles organised by the World Triathlon Corporation. This by far is considered the most gruelling one-day sporting event since all the hurdles mentioned above are to be completed at a go without any breaks.

Akshay Kumar, John Abraham both strike gold

New Delhi: Akshay Kumar and John Abraham’s clash at the box office this Independence Day has had an unexpected outcome — both their films, Gold and Satyameva Jayate, have done well and effectively busted the myth that two big films can’t share a release date. While Gold has landed Akshay Kumar the biggest opening day of his career, with collections of over Rs 25 crore, Satyameva Jayate has done the same for John Abraham, with collections of around Rs 20 crore.Gold is doing particularly well at multiplexes, and Satyameva Jayate finds its audiences in B and C centres.

isn’t the only movie reference. The song has a scene where Shraddha extends her hand for friendship and right before Shahid accepts it, she uses it to comb her hair. This scene is so iconic since it reminds us of Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol’s chemistry in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

Mumbai: We recently heard that actress Karisma Kapoor was on the verge of making a comeback with a web series titled Mental Hood produced by Ekta Kapoor. But it seems that may no longer be possible. The title “Mental”, along with certain permutations and combinations of the word have already been registered by Salman Khan’s production house SKF, and so “Mental Hood” is currently not available for Ekta to use. Mental was the original title of Salman’s film Jai Ho. “Ekta just has to just pick up the phone and ask Salman for the title, but she is not sure if he will agree to give it away. But Karisma has a great rapport with the actor. She has worked with him in many films, and her sister Kareena is one of his closest friends. It’s not a big deal and Salman is known to be a generous person,” a trade source says. Karisma is following in the footsteps of her brother-in-law Saif Ali Khan, whose web series Sacred Games has won him much acclaim. She knows that the digital platform is huge right now. All that remains to be seen is if she makes that phone call to Salman.

Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed fires warning to Kohli’s India before Asia Cup 2018

Rohit Sharma open to solving India’s opening order woes in Tests

Asian Games 2018: Leander Paes and a shame, old story

Lahore: Pakistan skipper Sarfraz Ahmed has said that his side would look to utilise their experience of playing in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) against India in the upcoming Asia Cup cricket tournament. The 31-year-old further acknowledged that Virat Kohli-led Indian side are a relatively strong team as far as overall experience is concerned.“Our team has relatively more experience of playing under UAE conditions and therefore we will try to take advantage of this experience in our Asia Cup match against India,” Dawn.com quoted Ahmed, as saying.“On the other hand, Virat Kohli-XI is a stronger

outfit as far as overall experience is concerned,” he added.Shedding light on their preparation for the tournament, the wicketkeeperbatsman said that their prime focus is on maintaining the physical fitness and to make that sure they would be participating in a training camp.“Currently, our primary focus is on the players’ physical fitness and in this regard, a training camp [for the Asia Cup] is also being held from Sept 3,” he said.India and Pakistan will face each other on Sep. 19 in the Asia Cup which is slated to be held from Sep. 15 to Sep. 28 in Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Mumbai: True to its reputation, Indian tennis has created yet another stir at the start of a multisport quadrennial event. Back in June, Leander Paes’ inclusion in the 2018 Asian Games team after a 12-year gap was well hyped. Yet two days before the opening ceremony, at a time when most in the tennis squad had already gathered at Palembang, the 45-yearold unexpectedly pulled out of the competition. The reason Paes has given for his decision is that his AITA nominated partner, Sumit Nagal, is not a doubles specialist. The veteran, a winner of 18 Grand Slam doubles titles, asserted to have been in contact with the AITA expressing his wish to be paired up with a doubles specialist player. “Despite my repeated requests,

from so many weeks in advance, it is sad that we have not been able to put a doubles specialist in the team for a credible second doubles pairing for the Asian Games,” Paes said in a statement. The AITA’s selection committee named the country’s top three available singles players (the highest ranked player Yuki Bhambri, 97, was excluded from the list) and top three doubles players to make up the six-player men’s contingent. Rohan Bopanna and Divij Sharan were the other two doubles specialists along with Paes.“As of today, Rohan and Divij are the two higher ranked players and in better form which is why they’ve been paired,” explains AITA general secretary Hironmoy Chatterjee.

Mumbai: Opening in shorter formats proved to be a boon for Rohit Sharma, who said that he will not mind taking a shot at it in Test matches too, if the team management ever considers that as an option in near future. The 31-year-old has scored 1479 runs at shade under 40 per innings in 25 Tests with three hundreds and nine half centuries but is currently out of favour as far as longest format is concerned. With the trio of KL Rahul, Shikhar Dhawan and Murali Vijay struggling, Rohit was posed a question if he would like to open the innings in Test matches too.“Look, I have never

been offered (to open the innings in Tests) yet but I am open to anything as in whatever the team management wants. I never thought I will be an opener in ODIs when I started playing or when I was playing for India. But it happened along the way, so I (want to) keep my options open. No option is shut for me, so if the opportunity comes, I will take it,” Rohit told mediapersons at a promotional event. While his technique in testing conditions outside the Indian sub-continent has time and again come under scanner, the stylish batsman is still hopeful of a Test recall.

England vs India: Ben Stokes decision hangs in balance as hosts eye series win Nottingham: England head into the third Test against India at Trent Bridge on Saturday a commanding 2-0 up having overpowered the tourists by an innings and 159 runs at Lord’s only last week but in a dilemma over Ben Stokes.Stokes has long been England’s premier all-rounder and just hours after his acquittal on a charge of affray at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday, he was added to a 13-man squad for Trent Bridge. It would be extraordinary, if in keeping with much of the England and Wales

Cricket Board’s handling of the saga since Stokes’s initial arrest nearly 11 months ago, were they now to leave him out of the final XI.After all, it was only earlier this month that Stokes took four wickets as England completed a 31-run win in the first Test at Edgbaston, before a clash of dates with his trial saw him omitted at Lord’s.Chris Woakes, his replacement at Lord’s, scored a maiden Test century and took key wickets at ‘the home of cricket’ so is unlikely to be dropped.Woakes, like

MSMEs export hit more by GST issues than note ban: report Mumbai: MSME exports were hit more by issues related to GST implementation than demonetisation, according to a report released Friday. Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), considered a powerful engine of the country’s economic growth, are contributing around 40 per cent of the overall shipments from India. “...MSME exports were affected more adversely by issues relating to GST implementation than demonetisation due to delay in refund of upfront GST and input tax credit affecting cash-driven working capital requirements,” said Mint Street Memo published by the RBI. The report noted that the credit growth in the MSME sector had started decelerating even before demonetisation, and declined further during the demonetisation phase. “In contrast, GST implementation does not seem to have had any significant impact on credit. Overall,

MSME credit and especially micro credit to MSMEs, including loans by banks and NBFCs, shows a healthy rate of growth in recent quarters,” it said with the disclaimer that the views and opinions do not necessarily represent the views of the RBI. During the quarter AprilJune 2018, bank credit to MSMEs increased on average by 8.5 per cent (y-o-y), mirroring the level of growth during April-June 2015, with credit to micro and small enterprises growing at an even healthier rate. The growth in credit to MSMEs has recovered since the lows of late 2017 to reach the mid-2015 level, it said. The report said among various items of MSMEs exports, gems and jewellery, carpets, textile, leather, handlooms and handicrafts items are highly labour intensive and depend heavily on cash for working capital requirements and payment towards contractual labourers.

Stokes a pace-bowling all-rounder, has a superb record in England where in 13 Tests he averages 54 with the bat and 22 with the ball.Jos Buttler may not have done much with the bat in the first two Tests but he but starred in England’s preceding series draw with Pakistan. And for all that Trent Bridge favours seamers, England will be wary of dropping leg-spinner Adil Rashid and going in with an all pace attack. It is six years since they last played a home Test without a frontline slow bowler.

Stokes was added to a 13-man squad for Trent Bridge just hours after his acquittal on a charge of affray at Bristol Crown Court on Tuesday.

Airlines not charging exorbitant fares: DGCA to Delhi High Court

New Delhi: Civil aviation regulator, DGCA, on Friday told the Delhi High Court that airlines in the country are not charging fares that are unlawful, discriminatory or exorbitant and the ticket prices change according to market forces. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) also told a bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice V K Rao that under the Aircraft Act it was not empowered to make “financial regulations” with regard to air fares. The regulator took the stand in an affidavit filed in response to a PIL seeking capping of air fares charged by airlines in the country. The plea by

consumer rights activist Bejon K Misra has alleged that the authorities, including DGCA, were acting

as “silent spectators” to the “arbitrary” fixing of fares by the airlines. Denying the allegation, DGCA said in its affidavit that “change in air fares was dynamic”. “Fare increase with increase in demand for seats on any given flight and as a flight’s available seat inventory diminishes, lower bucket fares consequently may no longer be available. “It is denied that air fares charged by the airlines are unlawful and discriminatory and that the respondents (DGCA and the Centre) have shirked their responsibility,” the aviation regulator said while urging the court to dismiss the plea.

Kids denied admission by ‘minority schools’ to be admitted to govt schools Vadodara : With nine ‘minority schools’ in Vadodara denying admissions to students under the Right to Education (RTE) Act quota, citing their plea in the Supreme Court challenging the High Court ruling, the District Education Officer (DEO) in Vadodara on Thursday said that the affected students will be admitted to government run English-medium schools. On August 13, the Gujarat High Court had ruled against the minority schools’ refusal to admit about 298 students under the RTE act. Following this, the DEO had directed the nine schools in question to admit the students by August 16. However, the schools challenged the HC ruling in Supreme Court and refused admissions. Parents of the affected 298

students approached the DEO office on Thursday, demanding a final and feasible solution for the admission of their children. After consultations between the parents, DEO and authorities from minority schools, who refused to budge, the education officials decided to temporarily admit the students to government run English medium schools till a final Supreme Court decision. Of the 298 students, parents of 50 children have agreed to admissions in schools

which they had listed as their second choices. “Our prime concern now is to facilitate the admission of these students at the earliest. The students have already missed 25 per cent of classes. At present, all schools under the RTE have full occupancy but we had reserved a few seats which the parents are willing to take. For others we have decided to admit them in Government English Medium schools,” said in-charge District Education Officer, Dr MN Patel.
