PM Modi in Varanasi on his 68th RSS does not impose its ideology on birthday, interacts with school students anyone: Mohan Bhagwat at RSS event

Varanasi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi spent his 68th birthday Monday in his Lok Sabha constituency here during which he gave a pep talk to young school children telling them never to feel afraid to ask questions, saying it is a key aspect of learning. Modi, who is on a 2-day visit to Varanasi, first interacted with students of a primary school at Narur on the outskirts of the temple town and later met students of the Kashi Vidyapeeth and the children assisted by them at the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW) campus. “As students, it is vital to ask questions. Never feel afraid to ask questions. It is a key aspect of learning,” Modi said in his interaction at the Narur school on a variety of

subjects, calling the children “future of India”. A smile lit up the face of the school children when the prime minister said they must give importance to sports and must go out and play since it is essential. “Students must give importance to sports. It is important to learn various skills, this will help you forever.” After the prime minister left the school, one of the students said, “Modi kaka told us ‘khelogey to khilogey’ (you will bloom only if you play). I came to your school on the special day of Vishwakarma jayanti. My greetings to everyone on this special day,” he told the students. Earlier, the students welcomed him enthusiastically saying “Swagatam PM.” The

With gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks rising to Rs 10.3 lakh crore in FY18, Jaitley said the real picture of bad loans was known in 2015 itself and accused the previous UPA government of sweeping NPAs under the carpet.

Dena, Vijaya, Bank of Baroda to merge to form India’s 3rd largest bank: Govt

New Delhi : Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Monday announced the government’s decision to merge state-owned Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank to create the country’s third-largest lender as part of efforts to revive credit and economic growth. Pointing that bank lending was becoming weak and hurting corporate sector investments, Jaitley said the merger would make the banks stronger and sustainable as well as increase their lending ability. “Government had announced in the budget that consolidation of banks was in our agenda and the first step has been announced. The merger of the three banks will make this the third largest bank of the country,” he said. The finance minister further said no employee would face any adverse service conditions. “No employee will face any service conditions which are

adverse in nature. The best of the service conditions will apply to all of them,” he said. The move comes after State Bank of India was merged with five of its subsidiary banks last year and also took over the Bharatiya Mahila Bank, a niche state-run lender for women. The government owns a majority stake in 21 lenders, which account for more than two-thirds of banking assets. Jaitley further said banks were in a fragile condition due to excessive lending and ballooning NPAs. With gross non-performing assets (NPAs) of banks rising to Rs 10.3 lakh crore in FY18, the finance minister said the real picture of bad loans was known in 2015 itself and accused the previous UPA government of sweeping NPAs under the carpet. Jaitley, meanwhile, acknowledged that in the last few years public sector banks were facing a challenge.

school is aided by a nonprofit organisation, ‘Room to Read’. The children also presented the prime minister greeting cards. Senior BJP leader and local MLA Neelkanth Tewari said that as part of Modi’s birthday celebrations 68 cakes weighing 68 kg each were cut at 68 locations in Varanasi. Tewari, who is a UP minister, said, “Special prayers were being offered in 68 temples to pray for the long life of the PM. About a thousand earthen lamps have been lit at 90 locations.” Medical camps were held at 72 places, he added. A cleanliness drive was launched on the streets leading to various ghats in the city, including the Ganga ghat and the Vishwanath Temple.

New Delhi : The RSS never imposes its ideology on anyone and the work it does is incomparable, said Sangh chief Mohan Bhagwat Monday while addressing a lecture series in New Delhi. ‘Bhavishya Ka Bharat — An RSS Perspective’, a three-day conclave, is being organised by the RSS with an aim to engage people from all walks of life and present its perspective on future of the country. On the first day of the conclave, Bhagwat said the lecture

series was organised so that people could understand the organisation better. The RSS chief spoke about the contributions and life of Dr K B Hedgewar, the founder of the RSS, and went on to praise the Sangh workers for their relentless work towards social welfare. Bhagwat further claimed that the RSS continues to be misunderstood after all these years. He said the RSS has emerged as a force to be reckoned with and does not seek publicity and no organisation in the country can match its high standards. He also talked about the contribution of the Congress in the freedom movement and said the party gave the country several great personalities. A host of Bollywood celebrities, including Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Manisha Koirala, Anu Malik, Ravi Kisen, Bhagyashree, and Annu Kapoor were in attendance at the event.

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday allowed the sale of painkiller Saridon and two other drugs that were mentioned in the list of combination medicines banned by the health ministry last week. The top court’s order came on a petition filed by the makers of these medicines. A bench of Justices R F Nariman and Indu Malhotra lifted the ban on Piramal Healthcare’s Saridon, GlaxoSmithKline’s Piriton, Juggat Pharma’s Dart and another drug, the details of which could not be immediately known, news agency PTI reported. The

companies approached the top court after the government banned the manufacture, sale and distribution of 328 fixed-dose combinations (FDCs) drugs for human use with immediate effect to stop their “illegal use”. During the hearing, the companies argued that these FDCs were being manufactured since before 1988 and as the apex court had earlier exempted 15 such combinations from the government’s ban, the same exemptions should be extended to these brands, a report in The Economic Times quoted two lawyers as saying.

Demonetisation ‘biggest scam’ of Modi govt, says Rahul in poll-bound MP

Bhopal: Holding a 15-km roadshow in poll- bound Madhya Pradesh, Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Monday termed the demonetisation as the “biggest scam” of the Modi government to convert black money into white. Gandhi held the four-hour-long roadshow after performing ‘puja’ and taking blessings from 11 priests. Travelling in a bus, the 48-year-old leader criss-crossed several areas of Bhopal, passing through the roads which were decorated and had party banners like the ones describing Gandhi as a ‘Shiv bhakt’ (a devotee of Lord Shiva). The roadshow was the virtual launch of the Congress campaign for the assembly polls slated later this year, in which

his party has the toughest task of dislodging the BJP which has been ruling the state for the last 15 years. Thousands of Congress workers and local residents flanked the roads and jostled to catch a glimpse of Gandhi, who was accompanied by

Army still rules Pakistan, let’s ‘wait and watch’ how things go: VK Singh

New Delhi: Union minister V K Singh said on Monday the army still rules Pakistan despite the election of Imran Khan as the new prime minister, adding that it remains to be seen whether “the person” will be able to bring about a change. India is adopting a “wait and watch” approach after the installation of a new government in Pakistan, the Minister of State for External Affairs told reporters. Responding to a question on incidents of infiltration at the border after the change of government in Pakistan, he said, “Did

you all expect a change? I don’t know. After all, the person has been propped up by the (Pakistan) army. The army still rules. So, let’s wait and watch how things go -- whether the person remains under army control or doesn’t remain under its control.” Singh did not refer to Khan by name. Dialogue with Pakistan can happen only if the environment is “conducive” for talks, the minister added on the sidelines of the opening of a two-day conference Smart Border Management - organised by FICCI. “India’s policy is very clear.

SC asks Bengal govt to submit its report on murders of BJP workers

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday asked the West Bengal government to file a report in two weeks on the investigation into the alleged killing of three BJP workers in the state after the recent local body polls. A bench of Justices UU Lalit and Ashok Bhushan said it will go into the locus of petitioner advocate Gaurav Bhatia only after the state government’s reply comes, after the state government said such petitions should not be encouraged by the court. Maintaining that several people have been arrested with regard to the alleged murders, senior advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for West Bengal government, said it was wrong to say that the police was not doing anything. “At the time when the petition was filed, several people were arrested with regard to those crimes.

In IL&FS, India rues its own belt-and-road debt fiasco

It was as a newspaper-office intern in New Delhi in 1992 that I witnessed the birth of India’s home grown belt and road initiative. The program was midwifed by an up-andcoming lender that few had then heard of: Infrastructure Leasing & Financial Services Ltd (IL&FS). It wasn’t called belt-and-road, a term that would gain currency much later as a catchphrase for China’s opaquely financed global infrastructure ambitions. There’s a lot of scrutiny now of those energy and transportation projects, and a growing discomfort that Beijing may be ensnaring developing countries in a debt trap. So it’s remarkable that India—itself a vocal critic of belt-and-road—allowed a local financier to do something similar on home turf, with little accountability or supervision. A perennial paucity of budgetary resources has forced taxpayers to outsource infrastructure— not to the Chinese, but to local public-private partnerships led by IL&FS. However, in many instances, only the returns became private. Risks remained with the public. Those risks have now come back to bite. IL&FS and its associates have $12.5 billion in debt, of which $500 million is due over the next six months. The group has only $27 million of liquidity at hand, sparking a debt repayment crisis that threatens to engulf Indian banks and mutual funds to insurance and pension funds. Chairman Ravi Parthasarathy, paid $3.65 million last fiscal year, left abruptly in July after being with the company since its inception. When I first encountered it, the fiveyear-old IL&FS was barely getting started with what would become its unique model: a financier that also conceived, executed and owned large projects. It offered to do all those things in 1992, when India’s capital city of New Delhi and its eastern suburb of Noida agreed to build a connecting expressway across the river Yamuna. The IL&FS-controlled Noida Toll Bridge Co. opened a gleaming eight-lane motorway nine years later. Driving on it was divine, but it soon became apparent shareholders were getting a risk-free ride at commuters’ expense, with the project guaranteeing 20% returns to equity investors including IL&FS. When the Delhi and Noida governments gave the land, they had expected the expressway to be returned to them in 30 years. In 2008, though, it looked like the asset was going to be in private hands for at least 70 years. In 2016, a court called out the daylight robbery and ordered the toll plazas to be dismantled. Stock of India’s first publicly traded toll road shot up above 70 in 2007; it changes hands for less than 9 now.

Aaron Finch knew time was running out on ever wearing the baggy green cap handed out to Australia’s test cricketers, but also thought next month’s series against Pakistan might be his best chance yet to earn one.

Aaron Finch realised time was running out, now plans to seize chance

Dortmund : Opening batsman Aaron Finch knew time was running out on ever wearing the baggy green cap handed out to Australia’s test cricketers, but also thought next month’s series against Pakistan might be his best chance yet to earn one. Finch was one of five uncapped test players named last week in Justin Langer’s raw side for the two tests in the United Arab Emirates, with the first match starting on Oct. 7. The 31-yearold made his international debut for Australia in a Twenty20 match in 2011 before playing his first onedayer in 2013, but had never been selected for a test tour. Former captain Steve Smith and vice-captain David Warner and Cameron Bancroft were suspended earlier this year for their roles in a ball-tampering scandal and Finch told reporters on Monday he realised that had potentially opened

the door for him. “I thought it wasn’t ‘now or never’ but thought that if it didn’t happen now then it was less likely (to happen) down the track,” Finch told reporters in Brisbane on Monday. “It was a nice call to get.” An aggressive opening batsman in limited overs cricket, Finch said he was unsure what role he would be asked to play in the UAE, if selected. With Warner and Bancroft the preferred openers before

their bans, he could potentially join Matt Renshaw at the top of the order or occupy a spot further down. Finch said, either way, he was still going to try and adopt the free-flowing approach that had allowed him to accumulate more than 3300 runs with 11 centuries in one-dayers and almost 1600 Twenty20 international runs at an average of 45.60.

859 crore, Mahalaxmi TMT Rs 409 crore and Impex Ferro Rs 201 crore. These accounts would be auctioned on a 100 per cent cash basis and e-bidding for the same would be done on September 26. SBI has also put about another Rs 400 crore of NPAs under the e-auction route for recoveries, including that of Yogindra Worsted. These are separate from the high-value cases taken up under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code, where mostly consortium of banks are involved in recovering the dues. SBI had sold NPAs of Bombay Rayon Fashions and Shivan Dhatu worth Rs 2,490 crore last month.

New Delhi : Former India opener Virender Sehwag Monday said he resigned from the Delhi and Districts Cricket Association’s cricket committee keeping the body’s interests in mind. Sehwag, along with committee members Aakash Chopra and Rahul Sanghvi, had recommended the retention of Manoj Prabhakar as bowling coach but it wasn’t ratified by the management. It couldn’t be confirmed if that was the trigger for Sehwag’s resignation. However, as per DDCA sources the trio’s resignation was accepted because the state body will submit a new constitution as per Supreme Court orders in the next two days and fresh panels need to be appointed. When Sehwag was

asked whether Prabhakar’s non-appointment led to his resignation, he gave an open-ended reply. ”We had come together and given time and effort with the idea of contributing and helping in the improvement of Delhi cricket within the framework of our role as a cricket committee,” Sehwag told news agancy. ”However, looking at the best interest of Delhi Cricket, we would like to inform you that all three of us would not be able to continue with the assignment of Cricket Committee of DDCA any further due to our busy schedule in day to day life,” he added. Is is believed that skipper Gautam Gambhir is against Prabhakar’s appointment as he had been named in the 2000 match-fixing scandal.

Mother Dairy won’t cut prices despite Patanjali’s cheaper cow milk New Delhi: Unfazed by the introduction of cheaper packaged cow milk by new entrant Patanjali group, market leader Mother Dairy on Monday said the company will not reduce prices to match competition. Mother Dairy, which sells around 7 lakh litres of cow milk per day largely in Delhi-NCR market, also expressed confidence that its sales volume will not be affected with more players entering in this segment. Haridwar-based Patanjali Ayurved has launched cow milk at Rs 40 per litre as against Rs 42 charged by the

Usman Khan was adjudged the Man-ofthe-Match for his three wickets in an over that helped Pakistan bowl out Hong Kong for a paltry 116. Pakistan then scored 120 for 2 in 23.4 overs to win the match. “When I came to bowl in the first spell, I tried to pick wickets with the new ball, but luck was not with me. Second spell, I got the ball to reverse swing and I managed to take wickets,” Usman said.“It’s alright. I was bleeding from my feet but all is fine right now and I am fit. I just slipped a little bit so I thought it would be safe to get it checked.

Mother Dairy. “We welcome competition. Patanjali group’s entry will lead to an increase in the overall size of the cow milk segment. It will also help farmers and the rural economy,” Mother Dairy Fruit & Vegetable Pvt Ltd Director Saugata Mitra told PTI. Asked whether the company will cut rates, he said, “We will neither increase nor decrease our price of cow milk”. Last week, Baba Ramdev’s Patanjali Ayurved announced its entry into the cow milk segment by launching cow milk and milkbased dairy products, targeting

sales of around Rs 1,000 crore by FY20. Amul and Parag Milk, too, have launched cow milk in Delhi-NCR. “We have been serving the Delhi-NCR market for last 40 years. Our customers are loyal to the brand,” he said, ruling out any adverse impact on its sales volume. “The packaged cow milk market across the country is estimated to be of around 10-12 lakh litres per day. We sell around 7 lakh per day currently and this is estimated to touch 8 lakh litre per day by March next year,” Mitra said, adding the entry of new players

would expand the market size of this segment. Overall, Mother Dairy supplies about 36-37 lakh litres of milk (pouches and token) per day, of which 32 lakh litres per day are in Delhi-NCR through 1,400 retail outlets. Its competitor Patanjali would supply cow milk in the markets of Delhi NCR, Rajasthan, Mumbai and Pune areas of Maharashtra with a network of around 56,000 retailers, dispensing around four lakh litres milk on daily basis. “Our milk would be cheaper than other established brands by Rs 2 at Rs 40 per litre.

Gold rises on global cues, jewellers’ buying

New Delhi: Gold prices rose by Rs 180 to Rs 31,600 per 10 gram at the bullion market on Monday, largely driven by a firm trend overseas amid increased buying by local jewellers. Silver followed suit and shot up by Rs 180 to Rs 37,680 per kg backed by increased offtake by industrial units and coin makers. Traders said sentiment bolstered after gold inched up Monday in global markets as bargainhunters bought the metal after prices dipped in the previous session, amid reports that the US is set to impose a new round of tariffs on Chinese imports. Globally, gold rose 0.19 per cent to USD 1,195.40 an ounce and silver by 0.39 per cent to USD 14.08 an ounce in Singapore. Besides, a depreciating rupee which

again breached the the 72-mark against the dollar, making imports costlier, and a pick up in buying by local jewellers at domestic spot market, aided the uptrend, traders said. In the national capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity climbed by Rs 180 each to Rs 31,600 and Rs 31,450 per 10 gram, respectively. It had gained Rs 20 on Saturday’s trade. Sovereign gold, however, remained flat at Rs 24,500 per piece of eight gram. Following gold, silver ready rose by Rs 180 to Rs 37,680 per kg and weekly-based delivery by Rs 200 to Rs 37,195 per kg. Silver coins, however, were unaltered at Rs 72,000 for buying and Rs 73,000 for selling of 100 pieces.

3-yr jail term for mob lynching in Gujarat

AHMEDABAD: Faced with intense criticism and strictures from the apex court, the Gujarat government has decided to make mob lynching a “serious offence” punishable with imprisonment for three years. Though Gujarat has witnessed fewer mob lynching cases leading to deaths than in other BJP-ruled states, Dalits and Muslims here remain in perpetual fear while transporting cattle for legitimate purposes. Even an official consignment of cattle for the Animal Husbandry department of the Tamil Nadu government could pass through Gujarat only after a written request from its police chief to provide protection to the trucks, its crew and the staff accompanying them. Mob

lynching in Gujarat now on would be punishable under Section 153 (A) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) that pertains to “Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony”. Commissioners of Police and Superintendents of Police (SPs) in the districts would be the nodal officers for mob lynching cases in their jurisdiction, said a Gujarat government notification. Spreading fake news on social media or other channels, provocative speeches or objectionable literature and writings that could hurt sentiments would also be covered under the provisions of the same Section 153 (A) of the IPC.

He said elected representatives of the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation were not part of the examination process. “The Gujarat Technological University was outsourced the task of conducting the examination and no elected representative of the civic body was involved in any way,” said Pravinbhai Patel. Hardik Patel launched his hunger strike in support of two demands – quota in jobs and education for his community members under the OBC category and loan waiver for the farmers of Gujarat.

UK PM Theresa May cautions: The alternative to my Brexit deal is no deal

London : British Prime Minister Theresa May has warned rebels in her party that the alternative to her potential Brexit deal with the EU is no deal. The United Kingdom is due to leave the EU on March 29 and yet little is clear: There is, so far, no full exit agreement and some rebels in May’s Conservative Party have threatened to vote down a deal if she clinches one. “I think that the alternative to that will be having no deal,” May told BBC TV. The main sticking point to agreeing a deal between Britain and the EU is the issue of ensuring there will be no hard border between Northern Ireland and the Irish Republic after Brexit. The Times newspaper reported that the EU’s chief negotiator, Michel Barnier, is working on a new protocol text outlining to use technology to minimise checks on the border. Under the EU plan, goods could be tracked using barcodes on shipping containers under “trusted-trader” schemes administered by registered companies, the Times reported.

North Carolina devastated as floodwaters rise from deadly storm Florence

Wilmington : Deadly storm Florence drenched North Carolina with more downpours on Sunday, cutting off the coastal city of Wilmington, damaging tens of thousands of homes and threatening worse flooding as rivers fill to the bursting point. The death toll rose to at least 17. Florence, a onetime hurricane that weakened to a tropical depression by Sunday, dumped up to 40 inches (100 cm) of rain on parts of North Carolina since Thursday, and continued to produce widespread heavy rain over much of North Carolina and eastern South Carolina, the National Weather Service said. “The storm has never been more dangerous than it is right now,” North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper told a news conference. Many rivers “are still rising, and are not expected to crest until later today or tomorrow.” Some rivers were not expected to crest until Monday or Tuesday, the National Weather Service said. More than 900 people were rescued from rising floodwaters and 15,000 remained in shelters in the state, Cooper said. Many of those rescues took place on swift boats in Wilmington, a historic coastal city of about 117,000 people on a peninsula between the Cape Fear River and the Atlantic Ocean. Rescue crews negotiated downed trees and power lines to reach stranded residents, Mayor Bill Saffo told WHQR radio.

Top executive to leave National Australia Bank over misconduct

Sydney : National Australia Bank on Monday announced the departure of its top consumer banking executive, the latest high-profile casualty from a powerful sector-wide inquiry that uncovered misdeeds in his department and across the industry. Andrew Hagger will leave around October 1, the bank said, after 10 years in charge of a division that allegedly charged fees to hundreds of thousands of retirees for financial advice they never received. His departure follows a boardroom shakeout at wealth manager AMP Ltd, also after revelations of corporate malfeasance, as Australia’s banks face immense pressure to repair their tarnished image. Hagger was himself grilled by the inquiry for days over the fees charged by a NAB wealth management subsidiary to some 220,000 customers for advice they did not receive between 2012 and 2017. NAB has already apologised and promised to pay A$87 million ($62 million) in compensation over the malpractice, which is also subject to an ongoing lawsuit filed by Australia’s corporate regulator. “I take accountability for what has occurred on my watch, and accept that alongside successes were failures, including instances where we did not act with the pace required,” Hagger said in a statement. Along with his departure, NAB announced the creation of a “Customer Experience” division to replace Hagger’s department, with several new executive positions at its head. Mike Baird, a popular former New South Wales state premier, was appointed chief customer officer, consumer banking, NAB said.
