Conviction of Sajjan Kumar a ‘jolt’ for Congress: Prakash Javadekar Lucknow: Union minister Prakash Javadekar on Monday said the conviction of Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots was a “jolt” for the party and demanded action against Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath for his alleged involvement in the riots. The Delhi High Court sentenced Sajjan Kumar for conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced him to imprisonment for life. “The 1984 anti-Sikh riots was a one-sided massacre...the Delhi High Court convicting Sajjan Kumar in this case is a severe jolt for the Congress,” Javadekar told reporters in Lucknow. He said the Congress need not give clarifications on this, instead should take action against its another senior leader Kamal Nath, the newly sworn-in Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, who was also allegedly involved in the riots. The riots, in which thousands of Sikhs were killed, broke out after the assassination of the then prime minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards on October 31, 1984.

Cong leader sentenced for role in 1984 anti-Sikh riots.

1984 anti-Sikh riots: Sajjan Kumar gets jail for ‘remainder of life’ New Delhi: Congress leader Sajjan Kumar was on Monday convicted and sentenced to life term for “remainder of his natural life” in a 1984 anti-Sikh riots case by the Delhi High Court which said the riots were a “crime against humanity” perpetrated by those who enjoyed “political patronage”. The court said though it was “undeniable” that it took over three decades to punish the accused in the case, it was important to assure the victims that despite the challenges faced by the court, “truth will prevail and justice will be done”. The case relates to killing of five Sikhs in Raj Nagar Part-I area in

Palam Colony in South West Delhi on November 1-2, 1984 and burning down of a Gurudwara in Raj Nagar Part II. The court directed the 73-year-old Kumar and other five convicts to surrender by December 31, 2018 and not to leave the

city of Delhi. Six accused, including Sajjan Kumar, who was a Member of Parliament at that time, were sent for trial in 2010 and three years later, the lower court had convicted five of the accused but acquitted the Congress

leader of all the charges. Meanwhile, Sajjan Kumar intends to move an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court verdict. Deciding the appeals against acquittal of Sajjan Kumar, a bench of justices S. Muralidhar and Vinod Goel convicted the Congress leader for offences of criminal conspiracy and abetment in commission of crimes of murder, promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of communal harmony and defiling and destruction of a Gurdwara.

Mumbai : Referring to the Centre’s recent amendments to the SC/ST Act, senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Monday rubbished Finance Minister Arun Jaitley’s claims that a probe by a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) cannot be launched into the Rafale deal. Reminding the BJP leader of how the government and the Parliament had overruled the top court’s verdict in the case pertaining to the SC/ST Act, the Congress leader posted

on Twitter, “FM asks ‘Is a Committee of Politicians fit to review issues decided by SC?’. When Government/ Parliament amended the Atrocities Prevention Act to overrule the judgment of the SC, was it not a review by politicians of a judgment of the SC?”. Chidambaram also said several aspects of the Rafale deal were not decided by the top court. “Who will examine those issues? Or will they go unexamined?” he asked.

Kerala: Four transgender persons get police approval to offer prayers at Sabarimala temple

Kochi : Four members of a group of transwomen, who were denied permission Sunday by the Kerala police to climb the hill at Sabarimala, got the green signal today. They are scheduled to offer prayers at the temple on Tuesday with police protection. The transgenders – Anannyah, Trupthi, Avantika and Ranjumol – were sent back by the police at Erumely, a major halting point for Ayyappa pilgrims, citing law and order problems on Sunday. The transwomen alleged that the police asked them to come wearing male clothes and insulted their identity. The police nod to the transwomen came after both the family of thanthri (priest) as well as the Pandalam royal palace agreed there were no restrictions on the entry of transpersons. Senior police officers also checked with the High Courtappointed panel of experts deputed to look after the affairs of the Sabarimala shrine during the ongoing annual pilgrimage season. Police officers had indicated that while the September 28 ruling of the Supreme Court had lifted restrictions on the entry of women of all ages, it did not specify any curbs on transpersons.

Proposed law supersedes ordinance issued in Sept.

New Bill to make Triple Talaq a penal offence New Delhi: A fresh Bill to make the practice of Triple Talaq among Muslims a penal offence was introduced in the Lok Sabha on Monday to replace an ordinance issued in September. Under the proposed law, giving instant triple talaq will be illegal and void and will attract a jail term of three years for the husband. The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2018 would supercede an earlier Bill passed in the Lok Sabha and pending in the

Rajya Sabha. An earlier Bill was approved by the Lower House. But amid opposition by some parties in the Upper House, the government had cleared some amendments, including introduction of a provision of bail, to make it more palatable. But as

the Bill continued to face resistance in the Rajya Sabha, the government issued an ordinance in September, incorporating amendments. An ordinance has a life of six months. But from the day a session begins, the ordinance has to be replaced by a Bill which should be passed by Parliament within 42 days (six weeks), else it lapses. The government is at liberty to repromulgate the ordinance if the Bill fails to get through Parliament.

The rise of anti-tech activism and white-collar protest Google’s chief executive Sundar Pichai was grilled last week by members of the US Congress. Many highlights from the video-taped hearings have been doing the rounds across platforms such as WhatsApp, Google’s own YouTube, and on the online mouthpieces of many news organizations. My view is that the Google CEO, in three equal parts, gave a technology tutorial to elderly lawmakers, a plausible explanation as to why searches for Google’s images on the word ‘idiot’ unfortunately throw up images of President Donald Trump, and deftly side-stepped questions about Google’s plans to enter the Chinese search-engine market. He achieved this last by conceding that over a hundred engineers had been working on “Project Dragonfly”, Google’s research effort into a search engine that would comply with China’s censorship requirements, while maintaining that the tech giant had no ‘current’ plans to enter the Chinese search market. Should these plans change, he said, he expected that his company would enter into wide consultations, including with US lawmakers, before it made a final decision. We will have to wait for the Congressional report to see what, if anything, comes out of the hearings. That said, it is becoming extremely clear that executives from Big Tech companies are coming under increasing fire from at least three different groups in addition to governments. The first is with the stock markets. Like Google, governmental discomfiture with Facebook has been on show publicly. To add to this, more recent news is out that Facebook has had yet another breach where users’ photographs have been shared without their knowledge. Facebook’s shares have fallen in recent months. On 14 December, they were trading around $144, down from $217 on 25 July. Across town, Apple Inc. has stopped disclosing unit sales for its iPhone products. In the meantime, its suppliers have forecast weakening demand for their components that are used in Apple’s iPhones —thereby creating jitters among investors, and a steep fall in Apple’s stock price. On 14 December, Apple was trading at $165, down from $232 on 3 October. Big Tech firms’ troubles don’t stop with lawmakers and stock market investors. They are now coming under fire from human rights groups who are united in their viewpoint, and are working together to limit the activities of Big Tech. Bloomberg reported last week that more than 60 human rights groups, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, demanded Google end an effort to launch a censored search engine in China, saying the move could make the company “complicit in human rights violations”.

The hosts have pushed the Indian side on backfoot and the seamer believes that it was due to the lack of a balanced bowling attack, India find themselves in this position.

los angeles : Seamer Mohammed Shami, who scalped six Australian wickets in the second innings of the Perth Test, has emphasised on the fact that India should have fielded a full-time spinner on a lush green wicket as Australian tweaker Nathan Lyon was successful in troubling the Indian batsmen. The Aussie spinner has already picked seven wickets so far in the second Test. Speaking at a press conference, Shami said: “The team management makes these decisions. We can’t do anything about it. We had one spinner who didn’t bowl badly. (But) If you ask

me, I feel there should have been a spinner, but these things depend on your management.” After wrapping up the Australian innings for 243, India were reduced to 112/5 while chasing 287 on the fourth day. Mumbai: Fast bowler Sheldon Cottrell’s career best 4-28 was complemented by opener Shai Hope’s third fastest T20 fifty as the West Indies beat Bangladesh by eight wickets Monday in the first game of a three-match series. Cottrell used the short balls to precision to help his side dismiss Bangladesh for 129 in 19 overs before Hope led the charge with a 23-ball 55, his maiden T20 fifty. “Our plan in this game was to just bowl aggressive in whatever we do, whether bowling Yorkers, length ball, short ball. Just to bowl aggressive, and it paid off,” Cottrell said. “We would like to take this momentum into the next two games and finish our tour here. That has been the talk in the camp, just to win some games and get better mood

Amid a raging financial crisis in the industry, India’s largest telecom operator Vodafone Idea has urged the telecom department not to hold spectrum auction till 2020 on the grounds

that fresh need for quality radio waves will arise only once the 5G ecosystem is ready. “We expect to complete due procedure by then (JulyAugust 2019). I cannot say whether it (spectrum auction) will happen by then, but we will be ready post-second half of 2020. When we say 2020, it doesn’t mean the whole country will have 5G but it will start. Govt’s intense pressure on RBI could undermine India’s long-term financial stability

Google Maps to show auto-rickshaw routes, estimated fares for Delhi commuters

New Delhi: Commuters in the national capital can now view “auto-rickshaw” routes as well as fares on Google Maps app, tech giant Google Monday said. “Starting today, commuters in Delhi will be able to see a new public transport mode in Google Maps -- autorickshaws. By selecting this mode of transport, commuters will be able to view suggested routes for the ride as well as the estimated auto-rickshaw fares,” Google said in a statement. The new feature will reflect fares based on the official fare model shared by the Delhi Traffic Police, it said. This feature will be available in the Google Maps app on the Android devices. The idea is to incorporate one of most commonly used modes of public transport in Google Maps and share transparent information about the price of journey, Google Maps Product Manager Vishal Dutta

said. “Currently, for an unfamiliar journey, commuters often overpay and don’t have an idea about the distance or best route,” he added. Dutta said the feature will also help the users plan their journey better.

“...so they could look at the expected cost of the auto-rickshaw ride and decide whether they want to take it all the way, or perhaps take a different mode of transport instead -- like a bus or the metro,” he explained. Google Maps provides globally over a billion kilometres worth of transit results every day and has schedules for over three million public transit stops worldwide, the statement said.

On the other hand, silver prices remained steady at Rs 38,400 per kg in restricted activity. Traders said tepid demand from local jewellers and retailers at domestic spot markets due to end of wedding season and a weak trend overseas, mainly weighed on the precious metal prices. Globally, gold fell 0.07 per cent to USD 1,238.20 an ounce, while silver

traded a shade higher at USD 14.64 an ounce in Singapore. In the national

capital, gold of 99.9 per cent and 99.5 per cent purity dropped by Rs 190 each to Rs 32,000 and Rs 31,850 per 10 gram, respectively. It had lost Rs 30 on Saturday. Sovereign gold, however remained steady at Rs 25,000 per piece of 8 gram.

Gujarat Seeks Rs. 1,725 Crore From Centre For Drought Relief Work AHMEDABAD: The Gujarat government has sought a financial assistance of Rs. 1,725 crore from the Centre to carry out relief works in the wake of drought in parts of the state. The demand was put forward before a central team that visited Gujarat to assess the water scarcity situation that has arisen due to scanty rainfall this monsoon, said senior administrative officer Pankaj Kumar. He said the nine-member central team, comprising officials from various ministries, had visited Kutch, Morbi, Banaskantha, Patan and Surendranagar districts of Gujarat during the three-day tour. The team on Monday held a meeting with Chief Secretary JN Singh and other key officials of the Gujarat government at Gandhinagar upon the completion of their

assessment tour. Mr Kumar told reporters that the Gujarat government’s estimates suggest that a total of Rs. 2,902 crore would be needed to carry out various relief works in the drought-affected regions. “We have so far declared 3,367 villages of 51 taluka in the state as drought affected,” Mr Kumar told reporters in

Gandhinagar after the meeting. “Our estimates suggests that we would need Rs. 2,902 crore in total to carry out various relief works in affected regions. Looking at the funds available with us under the SDRF (State Disaster Relief Fund) and norms governing it, we would need additional Rs. 1,725 crore,” said Mr Kumar. “This

fund will be utilised in paying input subsidies to farmers, providing drinking water to people, for opening cattle camps, providing assistance to cattle shelters and to distribute fodder in affected regions,” Mr Kumar said. He said the state government is “confident” of getting central assistance soon. He said the team had given a “positive response” on the demand of central assistance of Rs. 1,725 crore put forward by the Gujarat government. Gujarat has received just 73.87 per cent of the average rainfall this monsoon. Kutch received just 26.51 per cent of average rainfall, while north Gujarat got 42.93 per cent, central Gujarat 66.83 per cent, Saurashtra 72.20 per cent and south Gujarat got the highest of 94.79 per cent, according to Met department figures.

Rahul Gandhi should resign as Congress chief, says CM Vijay Rupani

Bhubaneswar: Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani Monday demanded that Congress chief Rahul Gandhi resign from his post, alleging that he “mislead the nation” on the Rafale deal.Addressing a press conference here, Rupani said Gandhi made the issue concerning national security a tool to grind the Narendra Modi government. The chief minister was speaking as part of the BJP’s move to hold press conferences in 70 cities across the country to attack the opposition party against the backdrop of the Supreme Court’s verdict on the Rafale jet deal last week. “Even if all thieves come together

and call the chowkidar a thief, the people will not accept it,” Rupani told reporters here, referring to Gandhi’s barb against the prime minister. Rupani said only “those who are afraid of the ‘chowkidar’ make repeated noise about thieves. But, the people know the truth”. “The Supreme Court judgement

is a slap on the face of the Congress and those misleading the nation. Now, Gandhi should quit as the president of the Congress for misleading the nation,” Rupani said. The Supreme Court on Friday dismissed the pleas challenging the deal between India and France for procurement

of 36 Rafale jets, saying there was no occasion to “really doubt the decision making the process” warranting setting aside of the contract. The Congress has repeatedly criticised the deal for the 36 Rafale jets, alleging that the government was procuring each aircraft at a cost of over Rs 1,670 crore as against Rs 526 crore finalised by the UPA government. The government has, however, denied any irregularity in the deal. Rupani also came down heavily on Gandhi for raising questions over the deal even after the apex court held that there were no irregularities in it.

Russian 2016 influence operation targeted African-Americans: Report

New York : The Russian influence campaign on social media in the 2016 election made an extraordinary effort to target African-Americans, used an array of tactics to try to suppress turnout among Democratic voters and unleashed a blizzard of posts on Instagram that rivaled or exceeded its Facebook operations, according to a report produced for the Senate Intelligence Committee. The report adds new details to the portrait that has emerged over the last two years of the energy and imagination of the Russian effort to sway American opinion and divide the country, which the authors said continues to this day. “Active and ongoing interference operations remain on several platforms,” says the report, produced by New Knowledge, a cybersecurity company based in Austin, Texas, along with researchers at Columbia University and Canfield Research LLC. One continuing Russian campaign, for instance, seeks to influence opinion on

Syria by promoting Bashar Assad, the Syrian president and a Russian ally in the brutal conflict there. The New Knowledge report, which was obtained by The New York Times in advance of its scheduled release Monday, is one of two commissioned by the Senate committee on a bipartisan basis. They are based largely on data about the Russian operations provided to the Senate by Facebook, Twitter and the other companies whose platforms were used. The second report was written by the Computational Propaganda Project at Oxford University along with Graphika, a company that specializes in analyzing social media. The Washington Post first reported on the Oxford report Sunday. The Russian influence campaign in 2016 was run by a St. Petersburg company called the Internet Research Agency, owned by a businessman, Yevgeny V. Prigozhin, who is a close ally of President Vladimir Putin of Russia.

international Israeli PM’s son gets temporary ban on Facebook for anti-Muslim posts

Jerusalem : Facebook blocked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s son Yair for 24 hours after he wrote a post criticizing the social media platform as “thought police” and sharing previously banned content. Yair Netanyahu blasted the website on Sunday for removing an earlier post in which he called for “avenging the deaths” of two Israeli soldiers killed last week by Palestinian gunmen and calling for the expulsion of Palestinians. He shared a screenshot of the earlier post in violation of Facebook’s

community rules. Facebook deleted a post by Netanyahu last week in which he said he would “prefer” if “All the Muslims leave the land of Israel.” Facebook had no immediate comment. Netanyahu’s son has drawn media criticism for crude social media posts and a life of excess at public expense. Yair Netanyahu blasted the website on Sunday for emoving an earlier post in which he called for “avenging the deaths” of two Israeli soldiers killed last week by Palestinian gunmen and calling for the expulsion of Palestinians.

Trump’s muddies case of Green Beret accused of killing suspected bomb maker

Washington : The long and winding case of Maj. Mathew L. Golsteyn had all the elements of a story that would seize President Donald Trump’s attention. A Green Beret charged by the Army in the killing of a man linked to the Taliban. Thorny questions about America’s long-standing entanglement in Afghanistan. And a Fox News program that lauded the officer as a war hero. And so, on Sunday, Trump

announced on Twitter that he would examine the case of Golsteyn, using, verbatim, language aired just minutes before by his favorite program, “Fox & Friends.” “At the request of many, I will be reviewing the case of a ‘U.S. Military hero,’ Major Matt Golsteyn, who is charged with murder,” Trump wrote. “He could face the death penalty from our own government after he admitted to killing a Terrorist bomb maker while overseas.” With

that tweet, Trump made another extraordinary intervention into the U.S. judicial system. A president who just last week threatened to stop a Justice Department effort to extradite a Chinese tech executive and who spends most days vilifying the special counsel had now stepped into a complicated legal and ethical case that goes to the heart of the fraught politics of the military’s rules of engagement.
