She has sent in her resignation to the Vice-President. The former Uttar Pradesh chief minister stormed out of the House earlier today, after Deputy Chairman P J Kurien asked her to conclude her impromptu speech on the anti-Dalit violence in Saharanpur. After exceeding her allotted three minutes, Kurien told her she “cannot monopolise” the floor. “When the

Nagaland trust vote: Guwahati HC rejects CM’s plea, fresh floor test on Wednesday

Agency | Guwahati In what can be described as a major setback to Nagaland chief minister Shurhozelie Liezietsu, the Kohima bench of the Guwahati High Court on Tuesday rejected his contentions against a directive by the governor to go for a floor test, and pushed the ball back to the Raj Bhavan saying it was up to him (governor) to take a decision. A couple of hours after the High Court order

was out, governor PB Acharya issued fresh orders calling for an emergency special session of the Nagaland Assembly on Wednesday morning with an one-point agenda “to test the majority support” of the present cabinet led by chief minister

Shurhozelie Liezietsu. While governor PB Acharya had, in the wake of dissident legislator TR Zeliang’s claim of majority support, directed chief minister Liezietsu on July 11 and 13 to go for a floor test by July 17, the latter had

Tejashwi Yadav Presents Defense Vetted By Lawyers To Nitish Kumar Agency | Patna

Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar met this evening with his 28-year-old deputy, Tejashwi Yadav, who has been charged with corruption by the CBI. This is the first time that the two leaders have met alone since the corruption scandal erupted two weeks ago. They attended a cabinet meeting together this morning. At the 45-minute meeting this evening at the Chief Minister’s office, Tejashwi Yadav presented him with a detailed de-

fense of the charges against him - his explanation had been vetted by lawyers and senior leaders of his party including his father Lalu Yadav. Nitish Kumar has indicated a preference for the resignation of his deputy, who has publicly declared it will not be forthcoming, a stand endorsed heartily by his father, and their party, the Rashtriya Janata Dal or RJD, which has

the most seats in the Bihar assembly. With both sides adamant on their stand, it was left to their third ally - the Congress - to mediate. This evening’s meeting was reportedly set up by Ashok Choudhary, a senior Congress leader in Bihar who is also a minister in the coalition government. Earlier this week, Nitish Kumar’s party, the Janata Dal United, acknowledged that the Chief Minister had dialed Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and asked for her intervention.

told reporters outside Parliament, “When I tried speaking about the weaker sections today in the Rajya Sabha, I was not allowed to speak. Why? It’s a shame. If I can’t speak about our weaker sections in the House then I

have no right to stay in the House. This is the reason I have decided to quit from Rajya Sabha, I am not being heard, not allowed to speak.” “I met the chairman to hand over my resignation letter. It is not fair that I am not allowed to speak in the House on issues close to me…,” she said. In her resignation letter, she said, “When I got up to speak, the government side did not allow me to complete.

MEA revokes passport of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik Agency | New Delhi

The External Affairs Ministry on Wednesday revoked the passport of controversial Islamic preacher Zakir Naik, who is wanted in connection with alleged terror funding cases. The request to revoke the passport was made by National Investigative Agency a few days ago. “The Regional Passport Office, Mumbai, has revoked the Indian passport of Dr Zakir Abdul Karim Naik, resident of B-1005/1006 Jasmine Apartment, 65B, Dockyard Road, Mazagaon, Mumbai, under the provisions of the Passport Act

1967,” a National Investigation Agency (NIA) statement said. The request by NIA was made after 51-year-old Naik failed to respond to three summons issued to him in cases filed under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act against him last year. The travel document was revoked after the controversial Islamic preacher

failed to respond to a show-cause notice issued to him for personal appearance by July 13. The notice was served asking Naik why his passport should not be revoked in view of various investigations pending against him. NIA has registered criminal case against him at its Mumbai branch under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. The Interpol was approached against Naik after a year-long probe during which the NIA gathered evidence against him.

Naidu, who quit the BJP after he was nominated to contest the vice presidential poll, suggested he was keen on strengthening Modi’s “great leadership” but rejected reports that he wished to continue as minister. “The country has got a great leadership and we should strengthen the country through that leadership, and move forward. That was my wish. There was no intention as

some people are saying that I wanted to continue as minister...,” he said. “I had already made up my mind. I told my colleagues also that I want to see Modi come back again in 2019 and then I will call it off and join social service... but destiny decided otherwise. I have agreed with whatever decision was taken finally after discussion,” Naidu added. Having been “brought up” by the party after he lost his mother at a very young age, Naidu said, it was “very painful” to leave the organisation that he treated like his mother.

The NDA’s vice presidential nominee M Venkaiah Naidu today filed his nomination and reached out to parties across the political divide, saying he no longer belonged to the BJP and would work to strengthen democratic institutions if elected.Joined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP chief Amit Shah and party veteran L K Advani besides allies and members of non-NDA parties like AIADMK and TRS, the former union minister submitted his nomination papers for the election scheduled for August 5. How smart solutions can ease traffic jams in our cities The biggest problem facing transport in cities today is capacity, with road systems creaking under the strain of cars. The traffic snarls reported from Mumbai for the past two days are a case in point. Most of India’s metros figure prominently in the global list of cities with the most painful commute. Traffic congestion has reduced the average speed of vehicles in key cities to less than 20 kmph, plagued by several urban transport issues like poorly designed entry and exit points on roads and freeways, the dual presence of chaurahas and signals, the absence of lane markings and poor intersection management. How does one optimise the use of the existing road infrastructure without additional capital expenditure? Below, we have identified several intelligent traffic management solutions (ITMS) that aim to ease both existing and future challenges facing road traffic. Advanced traffic advisory for one, uses various intelligent sub-systems like sensors, CCTVs, VIDs etc on roads and vehicles to provide 24/7 traffic advice on various aspects like current and future average speeds, delays, incidents, congestion, roadwork, adverse weather conditions etc. to a commuter on their smartphone. Complementing this could be the variable message signs strategically placed along roadways, to display real time information for a variety of situations including emergencies, construction and road closures. Most drivers can relate to being stuck in traffic wondering if a green light should have lasted longer in a particular direction given the traffic on that side. This can be resolved through adaptive signal control technology, wired together through an IP network adjusting to the demand of traffic in real time. Japan has already seen the successful implementation of this technology and reduced traffic congestion by 35%. While most intelligent traffic management solutions are innovative, they’re also practical. Variable lane capacity management makes congested highways/ bridges/freeway systems more efficient, safe and functional. It reconfigures the roadway using movable barriers that are shifted back and forth several times a day to create high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes that match traffic demand. This dynamic solution offers real-time increase in road capacity and maintains positive barrier protection between the lanes. Often the lack of timely measures for incident resolution and management results in congestion and the occurrence of secondary incidents.

Umesh Yadav lands RBI assistant manager’s job in Nagpur Agency | New Delhi

He once aspired and came within a whisker of becoming a constable in the police department. But now, Umesh Yadav, has been employed and given a contract as a Reserve Bank of India assistant manager in the Nagpur office. Clearly a step up and a better government job – an option that his father wanted him to pursue when a youngster. He completed the joining formalities on Monday – a day before he joins up with the rest of the teammates to get together for the upcoming Sri Lanka tour. The tour officially begins from July 26 with the first Test in Galle. “The talks were on before the Champions Trophy. He had met RBI officials be-

fore leaving for England in May. The officials gave a go ahead to his appointment in sports quota but due to national duties he couldn’t complete formalities,” a source close to the devel-

opment said. Umesh also had an opportunity to be employed by Air India but despite doing well, he wasn’t given a permanent contract. The then Vidarbha captain Preetam Gandhe took him to Air India in 2008. “He should have got a permanent job straight away but things didn’t work out. He always wanted to represent reputed organization. That was the reason he didn’t make any hurry. Now, he has got what he deserved. “He couldn’t have asked for a better organization than RBI. Though he is financially secured – as most of the current generation cricketers are, thanks to IPL – it’s always good to have a permanent job,” a source added.

Historians Romila Thapar and Irfan Habib, filmmaker Shyam Benegal and several other academicians and artistes today condemned the stalling of a documentary on Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen, saying the censor board’s “diktat” to mute four words uttered by the economist in the film was a threat to India’s “most valuable traditions of free speech and debate”.

The Central Board of Film Certification’s regional office here had asked Suman Ghosh, the director of the documentary, to mute the words cow, Gujarat, Hindutva and Hindu India. Ghosh yesterday said he would not comply with the direction. “We are shocked and angered by the CBFC demand that certain words be excised from a film based on the work of Amartya Sen. The movie is titled after Sen’s 2005 work-The Argumentative Indian--which was widely acknowledged for its deep and authentic explorations of India’s traditions of public debate,” the protesters said.

A 16-year-old junior kabaddi player was allegedly raped by a man - who posed as an official of the Chhatrasal Stadium, in North Delhi. It was only on Monday that the girl approached the police after suffering from extreme trauma for over a week,” the police said. The police added that the girl failed to give any further information on the accused and that a police team would head to the

After receiving the complaint, the girl was sent for medical examination at Lok Nayak Hospital from where she was referred to Babu Jagjivan Ram Memorial Hospital. Following medical examinations, the case has now been registred under rape and few sections under POCSO (Protection of children from sexual offences act).

We all know that sex for many, even in today’s time, is a taboo. The topic is frowned upon and its discussion is restrictive. But, a woman decided to write about it in order to bring a change. Vijay Mallya of Kingfisher infamy had the cheek to ask the same question even as he fled the country to shake of creditors snapping at his heels and to take shelter in his luxurious ranch in London. More recently, NDTV asked the same question--Why we, when there are greater crooks in the country. Touché! It is not for the defaulter to ask why me or me alone. It

Instead, what he must say is he is innocent which he would prove manlike in the court proceedings. It is neither possible for the government nor for the investigative agencies nor for the informants to first compile a comprehensive list of all crooks in the country.
