New Delhi : Kerala continues to remain on edge as the death toll from the fresh onslaught of rain and floods since August 8 has climbed to 194, according to the control room of the State Disaster Management. Over 3.14 lakh people have been moved to relief camps across the state as the state is facing its worst flood in 100 years with dams opened and all rivers in spate. On Saturday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an additional grant of Rs 500 crore to Kerala, after holding a highlevel meeting with Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and conducted an aerial survey of the flood-ravaged state. He also announced an ex gratia of Rs 2 lakh per person to the next kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 to those seriously injured from the PM’s National Relief Fund. Meanwhile, Vijayan informed the PM that the state had suffered a loss of Rs 19,512 crore, on initial assessment. As several parts of Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam and Thrissur districts were submerged, people were camped on terraces or higher floors waiting for rescuers.

The Chief Minister said as per the initial assessment, the total loss was pegged at Rs 19,512 crore. The actual loss can be ascertained after the water recedes in the affected areas. The Chief Minister had demanded Rs 2,000 crore as emergency assistance. For now, Mr Modi announced an immediate financial assistance of Rs 500 crore.

Kerala floods: This is how much state has received as donation so far Apart from the PM Relief fund and Vijayan personally donating Rs 1 lakh to the CMRDF, various ministers of state, officials and other celebrities have also contributed money to provide relief to the flood-ravaged state. As Kerala battles its worst flood in nearly a century, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that the state has suffered an estimated loss of around Rs 19,512 crore as per the initial assessment. Admitting that the path to recovery can be long and arduous, the chief minister has urged all to contribute generously to the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund.

Dear PM, declare Kerala floods a national disaster: Congress

New Delhi / Kerala: The Congress on Saturday demanded the Centre to declare Kerala floods a national disaster. Congress President Rahul Gandhi tweeted, “Dear PM, Please declare #Kerala floods a National Disaster without any delay. The lives, livelihood and future of millions of our people is at stake.” His statement comes an hour after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced Rs 500 crore interim relief to the state following a review meeting with Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Union Minister KJ Alphons. This is in addition to Rs. 100 crore announced by Home Minister Rajnath Singh on August 12. Meanwhile, other Congress leaders also demanded more help from the Centre and other states for the flood-hit state. Speaking to ANI, Congress leader PC Chacko said that “Thousands of people are marooned

and facing a very severe, critical situation and more emergency evacuation operation is needed. What is being done is appreciable but we need more help from the Centre and other states as Kerala is in distress”. Resonating similar views, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala reasoned out that the state could get more resources from the Centre if the calamity was declared a national disaster.

Imran Khan becomes captain of Pakistan, takes oath as 22nd PM

Islamabad: Imran Khan, Pakistan’s cricket legend, took oath as the 22nd Prime Minister of Pakistan on Saturday. The swearingin came a day after Imran Khan won the backing from the newly-elected Parliament. Imran Khan, 65, who won a simple majority from lawmakers on Friday in a confidence vote was administered oath by President Mamnoon Hussain. Imran Khan has been sworn-in as the PM three weeks after the general elections took place on July 25. He outvoted opposition and PML-N prime ministerial candidate Shahbaz Sharif in the PM’s election. Imran Khan’s wife Bushra Maneka was also present at his oath-taking ceremony in Islamabad. On Friday, in his first address to Parliament, Imran Khan

vowed to act against those who looted Pakistan. “I promise my nation today that we will bring the tabdeeli (change) that this nation was starving for,” Imran Khan. “We have to hold strict accountability in this country; the people who looted this country, I promise that I will work against them,” he vowed. The Oxford-educated Pasthun, who launched Tehreek-e-Insaf, which means the movement for justice, in 1996, said that

Sidhu under Oppn fire for Pakistan visit, BJP calls it ‘shameful’

Chandigarh: The opposition in Punjab today targeted Navjot Singh Sidhu for attending the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan as Pakistan’s Prime Minister, with the BJP describing his visit to Islamabad as “shameful”. It also asked the cricketer-turned-politician whether it was necessary to visit Pakistan at a time when India was mourning the demise of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. Sidhu’s hug with Pakistan Army chief General Qamar Javed Bajwa at the ceremony also came under fire with the opposition parties asking him whether he remembered the sacrifices made by the Indian soldiers at the border at that time. “Sidhu’s visit to Pakistan is shameful,” said Punjab BJP chief Shwait Malik. “On one side, the Pakistan army was involved in attacking our soldiers at the border and on the other side Sidhu was hugging the Army chief. Does it mean he was thanking him for killing our jawans?” he asked.

he reached this place after struggling for 22 years. Former Indian cricket star Navjot Singh Sidhu is also among the special guests invited by Imran Khan’s team to attend the ceremony. Imran Khan, who famously captained the national cricket team to World Cup glory in 1992, has also invited some of his former teammates to witness his formal ascension to the top ministerial job in the country.

Haryana woman gives triple talaq to husband, elopes with lover

Yamunanagar: Amid the controversy over triple talaq, a woman here turned the tables on her husband, using the contentious practice to “divorce” him. Shazia, a mother of three, “divorced” her husband, Abbas, by writing “talaq talaq talaq” on a piece of paper, police said on Saturday. The woman, a resident of Unhedi village, then eloped with her lover, who also happens to be her nephew, they said. The practice of instant talaq is used by some Muslim men to divorce women. In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court last year had ruled that the practice of divorce through triple talaq among Muslims as “void”, “illegal” and “unconstitutional”.

US supplied bomb that killed 40 children in Yemen, claims report Washington: The bomb that killed 40 children and 11 others in a Saudi-led coalition air strike on a bus in rebel-held northern Yemen was sold by the United States under a State Department deal with Riyadh, CNN has reported. The numbers on shrapnel, of which images were taken shortly after the attack this month, indicate that it was a laserguided Mk 82 bomb manufactured by defence contractor Lockheed Martin, CNN said on Friday, citing munitions experts. Former president Barack Obama banned the sale of precisionguided weaponry to Saudi Arabia after it used a similar bomb in an October 2016 attack that killed 140 people at a funeral in the rebel-held capital Sanaa. But President Donald Trump overturned that ban after taking office in 2017. Fiftysix children were also among the 79 people wounded in the August 9 strike on Saada province, a rebel stronghold that borders Saudi Arabia, according to the International Committee of the Red Cross. The coalition has promised

an internal inquiry but analysts and aid groups have voiced doubt that it is ready to provide the transparency and accountability demanded by the wider international community. It is part of the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, a conflict that has killed nearly 10,000 people since the Saudi-led coalition intervened in Yemen in March 2015 as Huthi rebel fighters closed in on the last bastion of President Abedrabbo Mansour Hadi’s government. Coalition commanders have admitted a small number of mistakes, but there has been no public disciplinary action or changes to the rules of engagement.

Ranveer Singh on his out of the box fashion sense and how it has always been a part of his personality.

Why are our batsmen failing so badly

The third India-England Test match of the ongoing bilateral series begins in Nottingham on 18 August. The topmost question on every spectator’s mind is: Will Indian batsmen finally be able to counter overcast conditions, seaming pitches and swing bowlers? In the previous match at Lords, the entire Indian batting line-up could score just 219 runs with the bat—there were 18 extras—in two innings. In the first Test at Birmingham, all the Indian batsmen, barring captain Virat Kohli (and extras), folded for a combined twoinnings total of 214. If this was shocking, it shouldn’t have been so. There were enough signs that this was coming. S. Rajesh of ESPNCricinfo has pulled out some numbers (goo.gl/em5CJL), which prove what we suspected anyway: This Indian Test batting line-up is too dependent on Kohli. Since December 2013, Kohli has scored 20.2% of the team’s runs on tours to Australia, England, South Africa and New Zealand. This is exactly the proportion of runs Sachin Tendulkar made on tours to these very countries between November 1991 and December 2001—a period during which the Indian team relied heavily on him. Another of Rajesh’s numbers puts the problem in starker relief: Since December 2013 and during the aforementioned tours, India’s pace bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar has a better Test batting average than top-order batsmen like Cheteshwar Pujara, Shikhar Dhawan, K.L. Rahul and Rohit Sharma. The year 2018 was going to be a litmus test for Kohli’s team with difficult tours to South Africa, England and Australia. In the five Test matches so far—three in South Africa and two in England—the famed Indian batting line-up has crossed 250 only twice. In those two innings, Kohli scored 153 and 149. Barring Kohli—who averages 52.6 in these five matches—no other batsmen has scored, on an average, more than 20 runs per innings. Where is the problem? Are these batsmen just not good enough? These batsmen are definitely not as good in Tests as Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rahul Dravid and V.V.S. Laxman were. But the problem isn’t confined to India. Except South Africa, all teams are poor travellers, with batsmen, much more than bowlers, failing to adapt to foreign conditions. It might sound a bit lazy to blame the proliferation of T20 leagues but a part of the problem does stem from there. With the T20 format giving the sport its moolah, the pitches have gone flat, the rules have favoured batsmen and the ropes have been pulled in. These changes have happened almost everywhere in the world. Travelling teams don’t have to adapt much for the shorter formats. The same Indian team dominated South Africa in One Day Internationals and T20s, and England in T20s, even while travelling.

The actress managed to sustain severe bruises while shooting a rather simple sequence for Sui Dhaaga. Mumbai: We’ve heard of actors getting injured while performing high-octane stunts, like Alia during the shooting of Brahmastra; or while playing sports, like Ranveer Singh while playing football; or while training, like Varun Dhawan on the sets of Kalank. Enter Anushka Sharma, who managed to injure herself while performing a rather routine sequence for her upcoming film Sui Dhaaga. “There was a sequence for which I had to do block printing for approximately an hour. I didn’t even realise that I injured myself pretty badly in the process. There were blue marks on my hand after that scene. I think I worked too hard on this film,” says the actress, chuckling. Incidentally, even her co-star Varun Dhawan ended up with a gash on his forehead while shooting a brawl sequence for the film, in which he has to fall down the stairs. Thankfully, neither of their injuries were serious enough to warrant the use of sui-dhaaga.

Asian Games 2018: PV Sindhu, Kidambi Srikanth lead India’s charge for elusive gold

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Asian Games 2018: Indonesia welcomes Asia with explosive opening ceremony

Usain Bolt arrives in Sydney to kick-off his football career

Jakarta : PV Sindhu and Kidambi Srikanth will look to break new grounds as they spearhead India’s charge for an elusive gold at the 18th Asian Games badminton event which begins with the team competitions in Jakarta from Sunday. India ended a 28-year-old medal drought when the women’s team, led by Saina Nehwal and Sindhu, clinched its maiden bronze medal at the 2014 edition at Incheon, South Korea. Before that, it was the men’s team, comprising Prakash Padukone and Vimal Kumar, who had claimed a bronze in the 1986 edition. Among the eight bronze won by Indian shuttlers since the 1966 Asiad, Syed Modi remains India’s only singles medallist

in 1982 and Sindhu, who has been in rampaging form, will look to break that jinx when she begins her campaign in the individual event starting August 23. In the team competition, Sindhu and Co. will look to better their bronze medal show when the women’s team begins its campaign on Monday against top seeds Japan in the quarterfinals after receiving a first-round bye. Japan, who clinched the Uber Cup title this year, boasts of top singles players such as 2017 World Champion Nozomi Okuhara and world No 2 Akane Yamaguchi, besides current world no 1 and world no 2 pairs of Yuki Fukushima and Sayaka Hirota and Misaki Matsutoma and Ayaka Takahashi respectively.

Sydney: Olympic sprint champion and aspiring footballer Usain Bolt touched down in Sydney on Saturday, declaring himself ready to prove to the world that his Australian soccer adventure is “real”. The eighttime Olympic gold medallist will train with Central Coast Mariners for the first time on Tuesday after being granted an open-ended trial with the struggling A-League club. Draped in a Mariners scarf, Bolt arrived on a red-eye flight from Los Angeles and was greeted by a few dozen fans and a huge media pack. “This is real, I’ve said it since my last season of track and field I want to play football, I know

what I’m capable of, I know what I can do, so I’m thankful to the Mariners for giving me this opportunity to show what I’m capable of,” Bolt told reporters. “I always put my best foot forward and I’m just going to show the world what I’m made of.” The Mariners’ tie-up with Bolt has proved polarising in Australia, with critics dismissing it as a publicity stunt to boost the profile of a team that has failed to make the playoffs for the last four seasons. The Mariners finished bottom of the 10-team league last season and operate in one of the country’s smallest soccer markets about an hour north of Sydney in eastern New South Wales state.

Jakarta: A spectacular pyrotechnic show, including a simulated volcanic eruption, lit up the Jakarta skyline on Saturday night as Indonesia rolled out the red carpet for the continent’s elite athletes in the opening ceremony for the 18th Asian Games. The country’s president Joko Widodo made an unorthodox and dramatic entrance to the Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, riding a motorbike onto the stage before officially opening Indonesia’s second hosting of the Asiad. “We are proud, we are honoured by the arrival of the special guests from 45 countries,” Widodo told a crowd of 50,000 packed into the same arena where the 1962 Games were opened. “During the 18th Asian Games we, the nations of Asia, want to show that we are one in brotherhood.” The North

and South Korean athletes illustrated that sentiment at a localised level by marching together under a common flag featuring a map of the divided peninsula. There was a huge cheer for the Palestine contingent and Kuwait’s team were also able to march after a ban from the Olympic movement, imposed nearly three years ago for government interference in sport, was provisionally lifted on Thursday. Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) president Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah hailed his homeland’s return. “We are proud that the Kuwaiti athletes after so many years are participating under the Kuwaiti flag … to complete the 45 flags of all our members,” he said. The centrepiece of the set was a huge model of a volcano around which 3,600 performers danced in various colourful costumes.

Saving a life more important than a gold medal: Michael Phelps on depression Lahore: Olympic gold medallist and swimming great Michael Phelps opened up about his struggle with depression and said that saving other people’s lives who are facing the same disease is more important than winning a gold medal. In an interview with CNN on Friday, Phelps, who has won 23 Olympic gold medals from 2000 Sydney Games to 2016 Rio Games said, “I’d like to make a difference, I’d like to be able to save a life if I can. For me that’s more important

than winning a gold medal.” Phelps has opened up about hitting a low point back in 2012, after the London Games, when he stayed in one room for days. Now married and a father of two, the 22-year old said that his battle with depression is now over. “I was able to do some pretty incredible things in the swimming pool and I struggled outside as well,” Phelps said. “There was part of my life I didn’t want to be alive.” “Two to three weeks ago I went through a scary depression spell. This is

Business

something that’s going to continue to happen in my life. Thanking his wife for her support, Phelps said, “(My wife) is my everything and my rock and helps me through everyday life. I definitely wouldn’t be who I am without her. She was somebody who really helped me through my most recent time. I do like who I am and I’m comfortable with who I am. I couldn’t say that a few years ago. So I’m in a very good place and just living life one day at a time.”

UIDAI announces phased rollout of face authentication with telcos

New Delhi: Aadhaar-issuing body UIDAI has finally announced a phased rollout of face recognition feature as an additional mode of authentication, starting with telecom service providers from September 15. The Authority had earlier planned to roll out face recognition feature from July 1, a target that was later pushed to August 1. It has also proposed a monetary disincentive for telcos found slipping on the prescribed targets from mid next month. For authentication agencies other than telecom service providers (TSPs), UIDAI said specific instructions will be issued on implementation of face authentication feature, but did not give a fresh

deadline. Significantly, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has further said ‘live

face photo’ capture and its verification with the photo obtained in eKYC will be essential in those cases where Aadhaar is used for issuance of mobile SIMs. UIDAI says the move is aimed at curbing the possibility of fingerprint spoofing or cloning, and seeks to tighten the audit process and security around issuance and activation of mobile SIMs. It may be recalled that in June this year, a Hyderabadbased mobile SIM card distributor had forged Aadhaar details for activating thousands of SIMs. “This instruction (for matching live face photo with eKYC photo) will apply only where Aadhaar is used for issuance of SIMs.

Ranganath’s departure irreplaceable loss for Infosys: Murthy

New Delhi: Infosys cofounder N R Narayana Murthy on Saturday said the exit of the company’s CFO M D Ranganath is an “irreplaceable loss” for the IT services firm at a “critical juncture”. Describing him as “one of the best CFOs” in India and a “rare individual”, Murthy said in a statement that Ranganath understood all important stakeholders, including clients, delivery teams, employee aspirations, finance, investors, governance, the law, as also “the role of an ethical business in building a better society”. “He is everything the idea of Infosys has always stood for. His departure is an irreplaceable loss for Infosys at this critical juncture,” said Murthy. The comments assume significance given the protracted stand-off in the past between him and the previous Infosys management over issues of corporate

governance and severance package doled out to former executives like Rajiv Bansal. Stating that he had worked with ‘Ranga’ for over 15 years, Murthy said he has been “instrumental” in raising investor confidence in the company during the last five years by managing costs and margins. “His ability to take tough decisions in challenging situations, his solid financial expertise, strong value system, unfailing courtesy and flawless execution always distinguished him as an exemplary leader and a key asset for the company,” Murthy added. Earlier today, Infosys said Ranganath has resigned after an 18-year stint at India’s second largest IT services firm. He took over as CFO in 2015 after the exit of Rajiv Bansal. Ranganath will continue in his current position as CFO till November 16, 2018, Infosys said in a statement.

Ahmedabad: Players in the textile sector are likely to soon get relief. Well placed sources said that soon a new order, a draft copy of which is doing rounds in social media, will be passed that will allow a refund of pending tax credit of Goods and Services Tax (GST). The pending refunds are worth thousand or crore of Rupees. An earlier order by the government provided that the pending tax credit will lapse on July 31. The order disallowed refund of accumulated input tax credit on account of inverted duty structure (when the tax on raw material is higher than that of the final product) on about ten categories

of fabrics. It had created a hue and cry in textile sector. It was also not clear which credit will lapse? Players and tax experts made a series of representations to allow refund of tax credit and clear the air on other matters. Sources in the know of things said that most of the questions raised by the industry are likely to be addressed in the revised notification. A well-placed source told DNA that almost all legitimate concerns related to input services, tax on capital goods, exports and even stocks are likely to be refunded, which will be a major relief for the sector.

Taliban says no peace in Afghanistan untill foreign ‘occupation’ continues

How RSS uses BJP and Vishwa Hindu Parishad to balance the debate on cow slaughter Gandhi Nagar: The views of the RSS regarding cow slaughter are rooted in the nineteenthcentury Hindu reform movement’s use of cow veneration as a symbol to create a boundary marker that would help unify the fractured Hindu community. Dayanand Saraswati, better known for establishing the Hindu reformist Arya Samaj in the late nineteenth century, also set up a cow protection society, the Gau Rakshini Sabha; it was aimed at mobilizing Hindus on a community basis, which was also a core objective of the Arya Samaj, but served as a source of recurrent tensions with

Muslims. Hundreds of gaushalas were built as part of its effort to drum up support for Hindu nationalism.61 Cow protection, which was supported by Mahatma Gandhi, also had the backing of a significant part of the Congress party during the long period after Independence, when it dominated Indian politics. After Article 48 of the Constitution made cow protection a state subject in India’s federal system, several Congress-ruled states quickly passed laws banning cow slaughter, and some form of cow protection now exists in a large majority of India’s thirty-six states and Union Territories. India’s Supreme Court in 1958 upheld state

laws banning the slaughter of cows, and the calves of cows and of buffaloes, as consistent with Article 48 of the Constitution, but Article 48 cannot be used to mandate cow protection as it is only a guiding principle for legislative purposes. Three-quarters of those states banning cow slaughter make it a cognizable offence, while in half it is a nonbailable offence. State laws currently vary widely, from a total ban on slaughter and on the consumption of beef to permission from state authorities to slaughter cows depending on issuance of differently defined ‘fit-toslaughter’ certificates.

Kabul : The leader of the Taliban said on Saturday there will be no peace in Afghanistan as long as the foreign “occupation” continues, reiterating the group’s position that the 17-year war can only be brought to an end through direct talks with the United States. In a message released in honour of the Eid al-Adha holiday, Maulvi Haibatullah Akhunzadah said the group remains committed to “Islamic goals,” the sovereignty of Afghanistan and ending the war. The Taliban have had a major resurgence in recent years, seizing districts across the country and regularly carrying out large-scale attacks. Earlier this month, the Taliban launched a major assault on the city of Ghazni, just 120 kilometers from the capital, Kabul. Afghan security forces battled the militants inside the city for five days, as the US carried out airstrikes and send advisers to help ground forces. The battle for Ghazni killed at least 100 members of the Afghan security forces and 35 civilians, according to Afghan officials. A year ago, President Donald Trump announced that he would send additional U.S. forces to confront the Taliban. But since then the insurgents’ profile has risen, both on the battlefield and in the diplomatic sphere. The Taliban sent a delegation to Uzbekistan to meet with senior officials earlier this month, and say they recently met with a senior US diplomat in Qatar for what they called “preliminary talks.” The US neither confirmed nor denied the meeting. Earlier this week, the Taliban’s top political official, Sher Mohammad Abbas Stanikzai, led a delegation to Indonesia, where he met Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi as well as Jusuf Kalla, Indonesia’s deputy president, according to a statement the Taliban sent to The Associated Press.
