ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News China gets back at Trump with duty hike on USD 60 billion US imports Beijing: The US-China trade war escalated further Tuesday, with China announcing retaliatory tax increases on USD 60 billion worth of US imports, including coffee, honey and industrial chemicals. The increases are in response to the US announcing it will impose tariffs on USD 200 billion worth of Chinese-made goods starting next week. The tariffs will start at 10 per cent, then rise to 25 per cent on Jan. 1. China’s Finance Ministry said its tariff increases are aimed at curbing “trade friction” and the “unilateralism and protectionism of the United States.” There was no word on whether China would back out of trade talks it said it was invited to by the US, but a Chinese Commerce Ministry statement said the US increase “brings new uncertainty to the consultations.” The two countries have already imposed import taxes on USD 50 billion worth of each other’s goods.

SC nod to Karti Chidambaram’s travel to UK from September 20 New Delhi : The Supreme Court on Tuesday allowed senior Congress leader P Chidambaram’s son Karti to travel to the UK from September 20 to September 30. Despite Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) objection that Karti has been “blatantly misusing” the liberty granted to him by the court, a bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud allowed his plea. The ED had on Monday told the apex court that Karti was using the liberty granted by the court to protract the investigation in the cases against him. Karti has been facing criminal cases being investigated by the ED and the CBI.

BJP accuses Navjot Singh Sidhu of speaking like Pakistan agent New Delhi : The BJP Tuesday accused Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu of demeaning India and speaking as an agent of Pakistan by attempting to “justify” hugging Pakistani Army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa and claiming that Pakistan is willing to allow Sikh pilgrims access to a gurudwara on its territory. At a press conference, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra also demanded a response from Congress president Rahul Gandhi over the issue, saying Sidhu has been speaking on the matter with his permission as Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has already condemned him over his conduct in Pakistan during the swearing-in ceremony of Imran Khan recently.

Rahul targets PM Modi: ‘Shame on a government that allows rapists to walk free’ New Delhi : In the wake of the recent gangrape of a 19-year-old girl in Haryana, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said the “nation hangs its head in shame as one of its daughters is brutally gang-raped”. Gandhi also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said his silence on the issue is “”unacceptable”. The Congress president further alleged that the government leaves India’s women unprotected, afraid and allows rapists to walk free. The 19-year-old girl was allegedly abducted from a bus stop on Wednesday when she was on her way to her coaching class. She was allegedly drugged and gang-raped at a room adjacent to a tubewell in an agricultural field, the police had said.

Sitharaman also alleged that elected representatives of the institution’s students union were openly participating with such forces “waging a war” against the country.

Some forces in JNU waging war against India, says Sitharaman New Delhi : Two days after the united Left student group alliance swept the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students’ union polls, Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Tuesday alleged there were forces in the varsity “waging a war” against India. “There are forces which are waging a war against India and it

is they who are also seen with elected representatives of the students union. That makes me feel uneasy,” she said. Sitharaman, who is an alumnus of JNU itself, made the comments when she was asked about the recent developments at the university during an interaction at the Indian Women Press Corps. The elections were marred

by clashes and violence between members of the RSS-backed Akhil Bhartiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and the Left-affiliated All India Students Association (AISA). “The kind of things which have happened in the last few years (in JNU) are not really encouraging at all. It is very different to have a party whose ideology you may not

agree with. But the way in which they were probably got led by forces which are anti-India,” she said. Sitharaman also alleged that elected representatives of the institution’s students union were openly participating with such forces “waging a war” against the country. “They are waging a war against India, say pamphlets.

The court has summoned the Delhi CM, his deputy, and 11 AAP MLAs as accused in Chief Secretary assault case.

RSS never asks its volunteers to Chargesheet against Kejriwal, leaders work for particular party: Bhagwat ‘conspiracy’ to malign Delhi govt: AAP New Delhi: RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat asserted Tuesday that the Hindutva organisation never asks its volunteers to work for any particular party but does advise them to back those working in the national interest. Bhagwat’s comments, on the second day of a three-day conclave organised by the RSS, sought to distinguish between its functioning and the work of the BJP, which is seen to be ideologically affiliated to the organisation with many top leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, having an RSS background. He said there is a perception that the RSS plays a key role in the functioning of a particular party, a reference to the BJP, because of the presence of many of its workers in that organisation, but it is wrong. “We never ask swayamsevak (volunteer) to work for a particular party, we do ask them to back those working in national interest. RSS keeps away

from politics but has views on issues of national interest,” Bhagwat said. He said the Sangh believes the centre of power should remain as envisaged in the Constitution and that it considers it wrong if it is not so. On the first day of the three-day conclave “Bhavishya Ka Bharat -- An RSS Perspective” on Monday, Bhagwat said the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) does not seek domination and is indifferent to who comes to power.

The opposition parties have demanded to defer and reschedule the poll process, giving enough time to them for filing nomination papers. However, the State Election Commission has denied any such chance.

Tripura: BJP wins 96 per cent of panchayat bypoll seats uncontested, Oppn raises objections

Agartala : The BJP in Tripura has won 96 per cent seats uncontested in the threetier panchayat bypolls amid allegations of violence against CPI(M) and Congress candidates. The Opposition parties alleged that the BJP workers did not allow their candidates to submit nomination papers and demanded the state election commission to defer the poll process. State Election Commissioner G Kameshwara Rao Tuesday said that there is no “scope” of deferring the bye-elections as no violence was reported in the offices where the nomination papers were submitted. “There is not a single complaint against Block Development officers, who act as returning officers for gram panchayat polls or against district magistrates, who function as returning officers for zilla parishad polls,” State Election Commissioner said.

There was also no complaint against police, Rao said. Now, voting will be held in only 132 Gram along with seven panchayat samiti seats. All the zilla parishad seats were won uncontested. “September 11 was the last date of filing nomination papers while scrutiny of submitted nominations was done on September 14. After the withdrawal of nomination papers, 296 candidates are now in the poll fray across 132 seats of different Gram Panchayat bodies”, he said. The poll process would be conducted using ballot papers, which are not printed and ready. Consignments of ballot papers would be dispatched to respective booths Wednesday, the official said. Earlier this month, CPM had said they were able to submit nomination papers in only 8 among 35 blocks of the state which would undergo byeelections on September 30.

New Delhi: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) reacted sharply to the Delhi Police chargesheet against its leaders, including Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, on Tuesday, terming it as part of a “larger design” to malign the party’s government. Delhi Police, “controlled” by Modi government, has filed “many bogus cases” against the chief minister, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and AAP MLAs over the last three-and-a-half years, all of which have “miserably fallen flat” in courts during trials, party spokesperson Saurabh Bhardwaj said. “The latest fake case will also meet the same fate as the previous ones. AAP assures the people that such conspiracies will not deter the party’s resolve of working tirelessly for

the residents of Delhi,” he said. The court has summoned the Delhi chief minister, his deputy, Sisodia, and 11 AAP MLAs as accused in the Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash assault case. Prakash was allegedly assaulted during a meeting at Kejriwal’s official residence on the night of February 19. “The fake FIR by Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash and the subsequent bogus charge sheet by the Modi government-controlled Delhi Police are parts of a larger design to malign the Delhi government,” Bhardwaj alleged. He further charged that the “pro people” agenda of the AAP government and schemes like doorstep delivery of services, that earned global appreciation, has made the central government “insecure”.

Goa Congress meet Governor, say BJP should face floor test in Assembly

Panaji: Congress legislators in Goa Tuesday met Governor Mridula Sinha and demanded floor test by the BJP-led government to prove its majority in the Assembly. The move came at a time when 62-year-old Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar is admitted in the AIIMS in Delhi for a pancreatic ailment. The Congress legislators, led by Leader of Opposition Chandrakant Kavlekar, demanded that the governor should summon one-day session of the Assembly for a floor test. Kavlekar said the governor assured them that she would get back on the issue in the next three-four days. During the meeting with the governor, the Congress MLAs contended that the Parrikar-led coalition falls short of a majority in the 40-member

Assembly and that the Congress has the required numbers to form the government. “Let the state government prove on the floor that they have majority or else we can show that we have more legislators than them,” Kavlekar told reporters

AFT upholds dismissal of IAF officer for having extramarital affair with subordinate’s wife

Chandigarh : The principal bench of the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) at New Delhi has upheld the dismissal of a Group Captain of the Indian Air Force (IAF) for having extramarital relationship with the wife of a subordinate. Dismissing the petition of ex-Group Capt JK Pandey on September 17, the bench of Justice Virender Singh (retd) and Lt Gen Sanjiv Chachra (retd), has said that the records amply indicate that the petitioner had an inappropriate relationship with the wife of an officer who was working under him in his unit. “Such a relationship, in the armed

forces is taboo and against the ethos and norms of the sacred principles of camaraderie and soldiering. We do not wish to go any further on this subject, suffice to say that such a misdemeanour in the armed forces needs a quick and effective retribution,” the bench said. The case dates back to 2012 when the officer was posted as Commanding officer of 29 Equipment Depot (ED), IAF, Kanpur where he engaged in an extramarital relationship with one of his subordinate officer’s wife. He was subsequently posted to Air HQs, New Delhi, in March 2012 but he returned to Air Force Station Kanpur.

after meeting Sinha. The Congress has 16 seats in the Assembly. The state is being ruled by the BJP with the support of Goa Forward Party (GFP) and Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), NCP and Independents.

Telangana honour killing: Hitmen got Rs 1 cr to murder Dalit, one was linked to Pandya case

New Delhi: Unable to accept that his only daughter had married a Dalit and was also expecting a child, T Maruthi Rao promised to pay a gang led by Asghar Ali, who was acquitted in the Haren Pandya murder case, Rs 1 crore to kill his daughter’s husband. Rao, who belongs to an upper-caste, was arrested on September 14 with six others for the murder of P Pranay Kumar and told police that he was riled by the photos and videos that his daughter Amruta Varshini posted on social media. Pranay (30) was stabbed to death in front of Amruta in Miryalaguda town of Nalgonda district in Telangana on September 14. According to police, the “last straw” for Rao was his daughter’s grand wedding reception on August 17, after which he decided to eliminate Pranay so that his daughter would return to him.

The long road to the resolution of NPAs

As the world marked the 10th anniversary of the fall of Lehman Brothers last weekend, an event which had pushed the global financial system to the verge of collapse, the discussion in the Indian context has shifted to the ongoing nonperforming assets (NPA) crisis in the banking system. Indian banks, particularly public sector banks (PSBs), have accumulated a pile of bad debts and are struggling to extend credit. There has been some progress on the resolution front, with the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) forcing banks to take large defaulters to the bankruptcy court and the government in the process of infusing capital into PSBs. But lenders still have a fair distance to cover. The Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC) was introduced with great fanfare—lenders’ great hope and the answer to India’s problem of “capitalism without exit”. But Arvind Subramanian’s bon mot will not be put to bed easily, to judge by the IBC experience since. The results of RBI’s different schemes to enable recovery before the IBC were uninspiring. The IBC shifted the balance of power in favour of lenders. RBI also came up with a new framework for the resolution of stressed assets. It was hoped that these changes will help clean the stock of bad debt and check further accumulation. It hasn’t been that straightforward. As former RBI governor Raghuram Rajan put it in his response to Parliament’s estimates committee, “The Bankruptcy Code is being tested by the large promoters, with continuous and sometimes frivolous appeals. It is very important that the integrity of the process be maintained, and bankruptcy resolution be speedy, without the promoter inserting a bid by an associate at the auction…Higher courts must resist the temptation to intervene routinely in these cases and appeals must be limited once points of law are settled.” There have been litigations in a number of cases that have not allowed the resolution of stressed assets in a time-bound manner. Not all large cases referred in the first batch under the bankruptcy code have been resolved, even though the deadline has passed. Delays in resolution could undermine the entire process. The ongoing litigation by stressed power sector firms is a case in point. After they failed to get any relief from the Allahabad high court, these firms approached the Supreme Court. The matter will be now heard in November. Depending on how things proceed then, the IBC’s objective of timely resolution— already dented—may well fall by the wayside.

Steve Smith is due to appear for his Sutherland club against Mosman on Saturday at Glenn McGrath Oval in Caringbah.

Banned Steve Smith likely to be welcomed back, says Steve Waugh

Sydney : Banned Australian cricketer Steve Smith is likely to be welcomed back with open arms when he returns to club cricket in Sydney at the weekend, believes former captain Steve Waugh. Smith and David Warner were banned for a year for their part in a balltampering scandal during a Test in South Africa that engulfed the world game and prompted a review of the Australian team’s culture and drive to implement a new player code of conduct. The pair, who were also sacked as captain and vicecaptain of the side, were allowed to play Twenty20 competitions in other countries and lower level club cricket at home but are unable to appear in first-class level games until next March. “The Australian public, they are forgiving,” Waugh told Fox Sports News on Tuesday. “He (Smith) made a mistake and

he’s paid a heavy price for it. “But if he gets back out there and plays with the same enthusiasm and passion, he loves playing cricket, he loves scoring runs, he wants to get back playing for Australia, I think Australians will move past what happened before. “They obviously remember it, but they’re big enough to realise you can make a mistake and

grow from that and be stronger.” Smith is due to appear for his Sutherland club against Mosman on Saturday at Glenn McGrath Oval in Caringbah and Waugh said he hoped the 29-year-old would quickly get back into form and earn his way back into the national side when the ban ends. “We need him back in Australian cricket,” Waugh said.

will not tolerate data misuse: Prasad

New Delhi: The government is keen to promote India as a big hub for data analysis but will not tolerate any attempt by companies to misuse data to influence the democratic process, IT and Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said on Tuesday. The comments assume significance as the CBI has written to Facebook, Cambridge Analytica and Global Science Research in connection with the illegal personal data harvesting of Indians from the social networking platform. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has sought the details from these companies on data collection exercise followed by them. “We

are keen to see that India becomes a big centre for data analysis but if any data company misuses data to influence democracy, we will act on it. We will not accept it,” Prasad told reporters here. Speaking on the sidelines of a cleanliness

have taken a similar call. This is very much a writing on the wall, the future... “As we have moved out of the mobile sector, we will monetise at an appropriate stage our enterprise business. Reliance Realty will be the engine of growth for the future of this company,” Ambani said. Pointing out to the 133-acre Dhirubhai Ambani Knowledge City (DAKC) on the outskirts of the financial capital, he said there is huge realty play opportunity that RCom’s erstwhile corporate headquarters possesses, and

pegged the potential value creation at the site at Rs 25,000 crore. RCom owes over Rs 40,000 crore to a group of 38 lenders, including Chinese banks, and was resolving the debt through a strategic debt restructuring (SDR) process. Ambani said he is confident of getting a resolution in the next few months, and added that other monetisation measures, including sale of telecom infrastructure and fibre to Reliance Jio, are at an advanced stage of closure. He said the company is awaiting final approvals for spectrum

sharing and trading from the Department of Telecom. Anil Ambani also thanked his elder brother Mukesh Ambani, who is credited with conceptualising the undivided group’s telecom foray and also bought the assets as part of the beleaguered RCom’s monetisation efforts. “It would be most appropriate for me to thank and acknowledge the support (and) guidance extended to RCom and me personally by my brother Mukesh bhai Ambani,” the younger sibling told shareholders.

Earlier this year, US-based social networking giant Facebook and British firm Cambridge Analytica drew flak from users as well as governments across the globe after a data leak scandal hit about 87 million users. Cambridge Analytica was accused of harvesting personal information of millions of Facebook users illegally to help political campaigns and influence polls in several countries, prompting Indian government to shoot off notices to the companies.

New Delhi: Fuel prices yet again witnessed a fresh hike on Tuesday morning, with petrol and diesel being sold at Rs 82.16 and Rs 73.87 per litre respectively in the national capital. The surge in fuel prices has affected people in Mumbai the most, with petrol retailing at Rs 89.54 per litre and diesel at Rs 78.42 per litre While a litre of petrol is being sold for Rs 83.91 and diesel for Rs 75.53 in Kolkata, the petrol and diesel prices in Chennai rose to Rs 85.31 and Rs 78, respectively. The constant rise in fuel

prices is strengthening citizens’ demand for government’s intervention in the matter. The continuous hike in the fuel price is being witnessed from the past few days, causing much trouble for the common people. The Union Government has also been facing flak in the past few weeks for not implementing stringent measures to curb prices. The Centre has maintained that external factors, including a rise in international crude oil prices, are influencing domestic fuel prices.

Infosys loses arbitration case, asked to pay ex-CFO Rajiv Bansal Rs 12.17 cr New Delhi: Infosys Ltd has lost an arbitration over severance package to its former CFO Rajiv Bansal and has been asked to pay outstanding amount of Rs 12.17 crore, with interest, the firm said on Tuesday. “The arbitral tribunal has communicated its decision in the arbitration proceedings in relation to the severance agreement between the company and its former CFO, Mr Rajiv Bansal,” Infosys said in a BSE filing. As per the award, Infosys is required to pay Bansal the outstanding severance amount of Rs 12.17 crore, with interest, it added. “While the award acknowledges that Infosys had bona fide disputes, its counter claim for refund of previously paid severance amount of Rs 5.2 crore

and damages, has been rejected,” the filing said, adding that the arbitral award is confidential. Infosys said it will take legal advice for further action on the issue. The IT firm had agreed to pay Bansal a severance amount of Rs 17.38 crore or 24 months of salary, but the company suspended payments after he got Rs 5 crore as co-founder N R Narayana Murthy and others objected to the severance package as excessive. Following this, Bansal had dragged his former employer to arbitration to claim the remaining Rs 12 crore of his severance pay. Bansal’s severance payout has been one of the issues that Infosys founders had raised to allege governance lapses at the Bengaluru-based firm.

who was seen grappling with security personnel who prevented him from entering the Vidhan Sabha compound, later told the media, “BJP MLAs were being allowed inside… I am a MLA and had my identity card around my neck. Yet I was not allowed inside. I am not sure if any woman cop was pushed by me, but the fact is that cops were acting in a partisan manner.” Thummar said that the BJP has alienated itself from the people and will pay a price for this in the 2019 general election. The BJP, meanwhile, launched a counter attack on the Congress, claiming that the Congress has cheated

several sections of the society in the past for its own political gains. State BJP president and Bhavnagar MLA Jitu Vaghani accused the Congress of “speaking the language of Medha Patkar.” Jitu vaghani said, “Instead of participating in the Vidhan Sabha proceedings where tributes were paid to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, the Congress is using various groups for its own political gains. The Congress misled the Patidar community ahead of the elections and now in the name of farmers, its workers created unruly scenes in Gandhinagar. The Congress is speaking the language of Medha Patkar,” Vaghani said.

Shankersinh Vaghela on Tuesday offered himself as a mediator for anti-BJP forces before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and said he would “without doubt” support the Congress in Gujarat next year.

international Donald Trump’s ‘Space Force’ could cost $12.9 bn in its first five years

Washington : Creating a Space Force as a separate military service, as proposed by President Donald Trump, would cost an estimated $12.9 billion in its first five years, according to a detailed Air Force plan for how to go about it. This is the first publicly available cost estimate. When the White House announced plans to establish a Space Force in August, Deputy Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan declined to give a figure but said it would be in “the billions.”The Air Force’s estimate is contained in a Sept. 14 memo from Air Force Secretary Heather Wilson, who proposed that the Pentagon ask Congress for the authority and money to establish a Space Force headquarters in 2020. “The President has clearly communicated his desire for a military department for space,” she wrote. “Strategic competition with Russia and China is the focus of our approach.” Creation of Space Force as a separate military service will require congressional action.

Moon Jae-in lands in North Korea with agenda — ‘irreversible, permanent peace’

Want to see a non-BJP PM after 2019 Lok Sabha elections, says Shankersinh Vaghela

Gandhinagar : Claiming that the anti-Congress stance he took before the Rajya Sabha and state assembly elections of 2017 were a “small experiment”, former chief minister of Gujarat Shankersinh Vaghela on Tuesday offered himself as a mediator for anti-BJP forces before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and said he would “without doubt” support the Congress in Gujarat next year. “I want to see a nonBJP PM after the 2019 polls,” said Vaghela who felt that a third front in Gujarat or elsewhere in the country will divide anti-BJP votes. Vaghela, who bitterly exited the Congress in July 2017 and had hobnobbed with the BJP in Gujarat, on Tuesday met his followers at his residence at Gandhinagar. After the meeting, he told mediapersons that those unhappy with Congress and BJP in Gujarat might consider joining the NCP. “The idea is not to allow a split in anti-BJP

votes during the upcoming polls.. it should not even happen by mistake. This should be underlined. Rahul Gandhi himself has talked about sacrificing PM’s post. What I say in Gujarat, is that there should not be any division (of anti-BJP votes),” he said. When quizzed about his change in his political stance, Vaghela — who had openly declared that he had voted against Congress Rajya Sabha candidate Ahmed Patel in August 2017 polls and had later aligned with a third political front before the state assembly elections in December 2017— said, “Nothing is permanent in politics.”

Butterflies-in-stomach feeling: North Eastern teams begin Vijay Hazare campaign

Baroda : “Mujhe 17 number mila, tujhe?” The Arunachal Pradesh player’s innocent query is answered with nearequal sincerity by his teammate who holds up his own green jersey with a smile. It’s safe to say he’s evidently happy with the number on the back of it. The Arunachal team had just finished a roll-call in their dressing-room where each player has had to shout out his shirt and pant size be it “medium” or “large”-no XLs were available for the record. And most of the boys seemed more or less pleased with their

new “apparel”, even if a couple did whine and moan about not receiving their exact size. Till 20 minutes earlier, they’d been sweating it out in the side nets on a hot afternoon at the KDCG Cricket Ground in Nadiad. They’re less than 20 hours away, meanwhile, from creating history when they take on Mizoram in their first-ever Vijay Hazare Trophy match. The two will be among nine overall newcomers, all of whom will take their first bows on the big stage, in terms of Indian domestic cricket anyway, in Gujarat.

New Delhi : The leaders of North and South Korea, Kim Jong Un and Moon Jae-in, met for the third time Tuesday to discuss denuclearisation and putting an end to the 1950-53 Korean War. Moon landed in Pyongyang this morning to a warm welcome from Kim, his wife Ri Sol Ju, and a contingent of North Koreans who greeted him with flowers, flags, a blue and white map symbolising a unified peninsula and a sign that read: ‘We ardently welcome President Moon Jae-in’s visit to Pyongyang’, reported The Associated Press. The two leaders will hold talks between 3.30 to 5 pm (6.30 to 8 pm IST) on Tuesday at the Paekhwawon State Guest House, where Moon is staying. Incidentally, it was at the same guesthouse where two former South Korean presidents met with Kim’s father, Kim Jong II, to hold talks in 2000 and 2007. Kim and Moon will engage in a second round of talks on Wednesday, following which they are expected to deliver a joint statement and sign a separate military pact intended to defuse tension between the countries, according to AP. Moon will return to the South on Thursday.

Robert Mueller clears way for Michael Flynn sentencing

Washington : Special counsel Robert Mueller is ready for a judge to sentence former national security adviser Michael Flynn, according to a court document filed Monday. The move would bring Flynn’s involvement in the Russia investigation to a close nearly a year after he pleaded guilty and agreed to cooperate with Mueller’s team. It also comes just days after Mueller scored another key cooperator in former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who pleaded guilty last week after a long fight against the special counsel including a trial in which he was convicted of eight financial crimes. Since Flynn’s plea, prosecutors had repeatedly delayed his sentencing as the investigation continued. But in the latest filing, they say they no longer need more time, suggesting that U.S. District Judge Emmet Sullivan set a date in late November or early December. They also are asking the judge to allow them to file their sentencing memoranda no sooner than two weeks prior to the sentencing, a move that would keep the specifics of Flynn’s cooperation from becoming public until after the midterm elections. The joint filing by prosecutor Brandon Van Grack and Flynn attorney Robert Kelner asks that Sullivan set sentencing for Nov. 28 or sometime in the following seven business days. Peter Carr, the spokesman for the special counsel’s office, declined to comment on the schedule laid out in the filing. Kelner also declined comment. Flynn, a retired U.S. Army lieutenant general and a senior Trump surrogate during the presidential campaign, has been seen as a key cooperator in Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election and possible involvement with Donald Trump’s campaign.
