Amitabh Bachchan is all set to appear in a television spot for the Narendra Modi government, in which the superstar will be seen asking people to rise above religion and religious divides for the sake of allinclusive development. The concept is the brainchild of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will also feature in the short film along with Bachchan and Information and Broadcasting Minister Arun Jaitley. The initiative comes in the wake of the ongoing controversy that has been raging ever since the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) launched its ‘ghar wapsi’ campaign a few weeks ago. The television spot is scheduled to go on air around Republic Day. It features Big B flying a kite and discussing the country’s ethnic and cultural variety. He then questions the divisive forces that seek to cause a dent in the nation’s integrity and hamper its prospects in the areas of education, development and progress.

Five people died in an accident in Surat SURAT Five people died in an accident when their car crashed into a truck on National Highway 8 near Kosamba town of Surat district on Thursday morning. All the five persons in the car died on the spot due to severe injuries. Their car turned into wreckage due to the accident while the truck in which it crashed from back, escaped from the

location. In the accident Rajendra Patil, Digpalsinh Jadav, Anand Panchal, Parshuram Patil, all residents of Vadodara and Hemant Solanki of Ahmedabad died. The incident took place at around 9.30 am on Thursday and identification of the deceased could be done only after three hours as family members of the deceased reached on

Police suspect that the car was trying to overtake other vehicles on road from wrong side when it crashed into the truck standing. Police investigation revealed that the speedometer has stopped at speed of 120 km/hr. The deceased had left from Vadodara at

around 7.30 am and were going to Shirdi, police informed. They all were friends. "The car was on high speed and it crashed in the truck standing outside the road. Excise duty on petrol, diesel Gujarat CM apologizes after 'terrorists' hiked; no change in retail price wear skull caps in anti-terror mock drill New Delhi The government today raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre each but retail pump rates will not be increased. The third excise duty hike since November will help raise additional Rs 6,000 crore during remaining three months of the current fiscal as the government took advantage of a slump in global oil prices to fiveyear low to shore up revenue without stoking inflation. The oil firms had yesterday skipped cutting rates of the two fuels that

had become necessary as international oil rates plunged to their lowest level since May 2009. The excise duty hike has now been set off against the reduction in rates that was due because of slide in oil prices. The slump in global oil rates had warranted a price cut of Rs 3.22 per litre in petrol and about Rs 3 in diesel and even after adjusting the excise increase, oil firms will have a neat margin of over Re 1 per litre. “In order to fund the ambitious infrastructure development programme

of the government, particularly the building of 15,000-km of roads, during current and next financial year, the government has decided to increase basic excise duty on petrol and diesel by Rs 2 per litre,” an official statement said. Together with Rs 1.50 a litre excise duty hike effected on both products from November 12 and Rs 2.25 per litre increase in duty on petrol and Re 1 on diesel from December 2, the government will mop up about Rs 17,000 crore this fiscal to contain fiscal deficit.

NEW DELHI Gujarat chief minister Anandiben Patel on Thursday apologized for the 'mistake' of the state police after the cops courted controversy when they made dummy terrorists wear skullcaps during an anti-terror mock drill, Times Now reported. The exercise had brought embarrassment to cops. The exercise was carried out by Surat police at Dabhari near Olpad. During the drill, the special operations group

(SOG) was assigned the task of nabbing 'terrorists' trying to enter India. After some fake firing, the 'terrorists' were nabbed and arms and mobiles were recovered. "Even real terrorists do not come wearing a skull cap. Police should take care and not relate terrorism to followers of any religion. I will investigate the issue personally," said Gujarat BJP minority cell president Mehboob Ali Chishti. A defensive SOG

Inspector B C Thakkar said, "The mock drill participants were asked to wear skull cap just to give them a different look. It was not an

intentional move to relate to a specific community." SP (Surat rural) Pradeep Sejul added, "This should not happen."

Five dead in New Year's Global oil prices hit five year low, Eve clashes on LoC Jet fuel prices see sharpest cut

Jammu and Kashmir (Reuters) - Indian border forces killed four Pakistani interior-ministry troops on New Year's Eve, ending a year in which clashes between the nuclear-armed neighbours have escalated and hopes for reconciliation faded. Wednesday's incident, on the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir, followed the killing earlier in the day of an Indian border guard, a senior officer from India's Border Security Force said. "We have retaliated effectively ... four Pakistani rangers have been killed along the International Border in Samba sector this evening, said Rakesh Sharma, BSF inspector general for the Jammu Frontier. "As Pakistani rangers suffered casualties, they waved white flags, asking BSF to stop the firing so that they can lift the bodies of the dead men. We stopped the firing after their request," Sharma said. Frontier clashes

have intensified in recent months, dashing hopes that a brief thaw in relations after Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was elected in May would lead to a calming of the situation. The worst violence has been further north in the mainly Muslim Kashmir Valley, where separatist militants killed 11 Indian soldiers and police in early December, the worst losses in six years. Jammu and Kashmir held state elections in December in which Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party made gains. While leaving the party

short of a majority, the result could open the way for it to form a ruling coalition with a regional party. "Our (NDA government) response is don't hesitate. React appropriately without holding yourself back", he said. He added that and if there is an attack on Army posts, the terrorists need to be neutralised "with double the force" The Minister had also stressed that the Indian forces did not violate ceasefire agreements but only responded to violations by Pakistani troops

As global oil prices hit a five and a half year slump, oil companies effected price cuts for Aviation Turbine Fuel (ATF) and non-subsidised cooking gas on Thursday. In another development, the government hiked the excise duty on diesel and petrol by Rs.2 a litre each to fund its “ambitious infrastructure” programme. However, the hike would not impact retail prices of petrol and diesel, an Indian oil Corporation official told The Hindu. “In order to fund the ambitious infrastructure development programme of the Government, particularly the building of 15000 kms of roads…government has decided to increase basic excise duty on petrol and diesel (both branded and unbranded) by Rs. 2 per litre. Allocation of these resources to the road

sector will also spur economic activity and employment generation,” an official finance ministry statement said. The revised excise duty would be effective from Thursday midnight. Meanwhile, the global oil prices slump resulted in a reduction of non-subsidised LPG and ATF rates. While nonsubsidised LPG prices were cut by Rs.43.50 per 14.2 kg cylinder, ATF prices witnessed a 12.5 percent cut. Nonsubsidised LPG would now cost Rs.708.50 in Delhi, down from the exisiting Rs.752. Possibly the sharpest cut since it was deregulated in 2002, ATF or jet fuel would cost Rs 52,422.92 per kiloliter in Delhi, down by Rs. 7,520.52. In Mumbai, it would cost Rs.53,861.58/kl down from Rs.61,695.45/ kl. This is the sixth consecutive reduction jet

fuel prices since August last year, with the last cut announced on December 1st, when prices were reduced by 4.1 percent. When asked whether the trend would continue, Indian Oil spokesperson Amresh Kapoor said prices were reviewed fortnightly and the last review was done on

Wednesday. Prices of global benchmark Brent crude, which fell 49 percent during 2014, hit $53 on Wednesday, with demand continuing to weaken amid a supply glut owing to the US shale boom and the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) refusing to cut production.

India to track toilet use with tablets Prime Minister Narendra Modi is launching a nationwide online programme to check whether people are using toilets as part of his cleanliness drive. From next month, officials will head out with mobile phones, tablets and iPads to report on whether toilets are being used in rural India, with results uploaded onto a website in real time. India's shortage of toilets costs the country more than $50 billion a year, mostly through premature deaths and hygiene-related diseases, according to a World Bank study. India suffers a greater cost than other Asian countries from the poor collection of human excreta, the study found. About 626 million Indians defecate in the open compared with 14 million in China, the World Health Organization said in a 2012 report.Since taking office in May, Modi has repeatedly lamented the poor state of sanitation and public cleanliness in India, vowing to solve the problems within the next five years. The government has doubled spending on a toilet building programme and requested financial donations from some of the country's largest companies to help. "Earlier, the monitoring was done only about the construction of toilets, but now the actual use of toilets will be ascertained," the government said in a statement on Wednesday. In October, Modi annoyed government officials by ordering them to come to work to clean toilets on a national holiday.

Women Employees 'Strip Searched' at Kochi Firm, 3 Booked KOCHI Three women staff of a surgical gloves manufacturing company in Kochi have been booked for allegedly strip searching more than 30 women employees to find out who left a used sanitary napkin in a washroom. Police today said they have registered cases against the three women staff under various sections of the Indian Penal Code or IPC, including 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty) on a complaint by the other women staff. D e v e l o p m e n t Commissioner of Cochin Special Economic Zone (CSEZ) has set also up a

three-member committee to probe the alleged incident which happened on December 10 at Asma Rubber Private Limited, manufacturing surgical and examination gloves. The shocking incident came to public notice only a few days ago after the affected women filed a police complaint. After the incident triggered an outrage with women activists condemning the humiliating action and pending inquiries by police and the three-member committee, the management yesterday suspended a Supervisor, an Assistant Supervisor and a sub-staff following

protests from other employees. Also they were temporarily laid off pending inquiry. Managing Director of the company CYA Rahim said the suspension of the three did not mean that they had committed a crime. The probe report was being awaited. "The unit had been temporarily shut as the working atmosphere has been disturbed," he said. The women employees aged between 25 and 50 were "forcibly strip searched" to ascertain who was menstruating after the used sanitary napkin was found in a wash room of the company.

36 dead and dozens injured in Shanghai New Year's Eve stampede SHANGHAI People unable to contact friends and relatives streamed into hospitals Thursday, anxious for information after a stampede during New Year's celebrations in Shanghai's historic waterfront area killed 36 people in the worst disaster to hit one of China's showcase cities in recent years. The Shanghai government said 47 others received hospital treatment, including 13 who were seriously injured, after the chaos about a half-hour before midnight. Seven of the injured people had left hospitals by Thursday afternoon. The Shanghai government information office said one Taiwanese was among the dead, and two Taiwanese and one Malaysian were among the injured. The deaths and injuries occurred at Chen Yi Square in Shanghai's popular riverfront Bund area, an avenue lined with art deco buildings from the 1920s and 1930s when Shanghai was home to international banks and trading houses. The area is often jammed with people during major events. At one of the hospitals where the injured were being treated, police brought out photos of unidentified dead victims, causing dozens of waiting relatives to crowd around. Not everyone could see, and young women who looked at the photos broke into tears when they recognized someone. A saleswoman in her 20s, who declined to give her name, said she had been celebrating with three friends. "I heard people screaming, someone fell, people shouted `don't rush,"' she said. "There

were so many people and I couldn't stand properly." She added that she still could not contact one of her friends. The official Xinhua News Agency quoted a woman with the surname Yin who was caught with her 12-yearold son in the middle of crowds of people pushing to go up and down steps

leading from the square. "Then people started to fall down, row by row," Yin said. When her son was finally brought to safety, he had shoe prints over his clothes, "his forehead was bruised, he had two deep creased scars on his neck, and his mouth and nose were bleeding," she said.

Robert Vadra's firm Skylight Hospitality gets Income Tax notice

Ahmedabad

SPORTS ROUND Mahendra Singh Dhoni can play on till 2019 : Sanjay Patel

According to a report published in the Indian Express, the Income Tax department has started scrutiny into land deals made by Robert Vadra, son-in-law of Congress President Sonia Gandhi. Quoting sources, the newspaper says that 'principal officer' of Skylight Hospitality Vadra has been summoned by IT officers on Friday. Sylight Hospitality's transaction with DLF has been under the scanner for a long time and now they have been asked to furnish “agreements to purchase and sale of immovable properties” since 200506. The IT department has sent a 22-point questionnaire to Skylight Hospitality which seeks detailed information about minutes of meetings, the

nature of assets, purchase and sale of deeds etc. BJP has called the move by the IT department as an act of natural administrative process to probe cases where windfall profits have been made. Congress presumably has dubbed it as an act of political vendetta. According to Congress leader Manish Tewari, BJP is using state tools to hound political adversaries. Robert Vadra has been in the centre of a political slugfest for a long time. During the Lok Sabha elections and during the Haryana Assembly elections recently, Narendra Modi had raised questions on Vadra's land deals to score points over the Gandhi family and Bhupinder Singh Hooda government.

Heroin seizures by BSF in Punjab touch new high Chandigarh Braving sub-zero temperatures and dense fog these days to highs of up to 45 degrees Celsius in summer, India’s Border Security Force (BSF) seized 361 kg of heroin in 2014 – its highest in a single year on the border with Pakistan in Punjab. The seizure, according to BSF officials, is worth over Rs.1,808 crore ($286 million) in the international market. The seizures (till Dec 30) this year are higher

than the previous record of 322 kg recovered in 2013 along the barbed wire fenced 553-km border between India and Pakistan in Punjab. In 2012, the BSF recovered 288 kg heroin in the Punjab sector, comprising the frontier districts of Amritsar, Gurdaspur, Ferozepur and Fazilka. BSF field commanders say bigger seizures also show that heroin smugglers in Pakistan and India have become more active in the last few years.

BCCI secretary Sanjay Patel says there was no pressure from the board or selectors on MS Dhoni to quit and reckons that Dhoni can now play on till 2019. He also revealed that it was Dhoni who had pushed the board to nominate a vice-captain for tours. In a chat with The Indian Express, Patel spoke about two-captain theory and how Virat Kohli’s aggression is just a reaction to Australians. Excerpts. In hindsight, do you think Dhoni should have got a farewell Test? Knowing Dhoni, he is not the kind of person who will ask for a farewell Test. He has been never been a demanding person. If having a farewell Test match was the case, he would have played till the South Africa Test series at home next year. To be precise, it was a Dhoni brand of decision. Only a lion-hearted man can take such decision. As BCCI’s secretary, I will tell you that neither the board nor the selectors ever thought he was a burden on the team. Was the pressure of

overseas losses one of the reasons ? No, it was his body. His body was taking too much of a toll. Test matches are more demanding and he must have felt that this is the right time. We wanted him to carry for long, for at least two more years. I even told him, ‘if you are taking this decision under pressure than please change it as we are assuring you that you will remain captain for the coming year’. But he had decided it. Now my personal assessment is that with the Test retirement,

he can play on till 2019. India will have different captains for Tests and ODIs. Don’t you think it might lead to two power centres? In fact, it will be great thing. It will help in the longer run. There is nothing like a power centre. Cricket is being played by two groups. One who go out there in the field and do their job and the others are the administrators who do their job outside the field. Having two captains will in fact strengthen our team, we will have two new ideas on the floor.

Trying to bring in a new toll policy in a month:Nitin Gadkari Mumbai The electronic toll (e-toll) collection system introduced in the country will help save Rs 88,000 crore and cut waiting time at toll plazas significantly, Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said here today. Citing a Transport Corporation of India-IIM Kolkata study that said Rs 60,000 crore was lost on account of various delays at check posts, he said electronic toll collection

could save Rs 88,000 crore.“The report said that every year, fuel worth Rs 60,000 crore is wasted due to the time spent by vehicles at toll plazas. The amount goes up to Rs 88,000 crore if the value of the time lost is added,” he said. “Of the 350 toll points on the Mumbai-Delhi route, 140 have been converted into Etoll points. By completion of the e-toll work in the country, this amount of Rs 88,000 crore would be saved,” he told reporters.

Gandhinagar The Gujarat government today announced its new industrial police for 2015 aimed at making the state a global manufacturing hub, ahead of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit set to begin from January 11. We want to motivate ‘start-ups’ through this new industrial policy,” Saurabh Patel said. Key focus areas of this policy include infrastructure d e v e l o p m e n t , simplification of labour laws and motivation of new innovations through technology transfer. Besides, it would also focus on incentives for youth, women, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes and handicapped entrepreneurs, assistance to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) sector as well as assistance for upgrading technology. “Through this policy, we wish to boost manufacturing here. Ad war: 'UP Rising' posters removed in A’bad AHMEDABAD As the countdown begins toPravasiBharatiya Divas (PBD) and Vibrant Gujarat Summit (VGS) 2015, many key arterial roads of the city like CG Road, Airport Road and Ashram Road are lined up with images of UttarPradesh chief minister AkhileshYadav promoting 'UP Rising'! The publicity bombardment byYadav, promoting UP as the state forinfrastructural investment, education and other development parameters, at a time when Gujarat is going the whole hog wooing investors from all over the world, has raised many eyebrows. When this very in-the-face publicity coup pulled by Yadav's Samajwadi Party (SP) dawned on the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) officials, they started removing the posters and hoardings citing technical reasons. SP had tried to beat BJP at the publicity game by putting up many as 60 small hoardings and 40 billboards promoting UP as preferred investment destination in run up to the Vibrant Gujarat Summit. The advertisements were booked till January 15. Samajwadi Party's Gujarat state secretary, Kiran Kansara said that they had put up the advertisements to attract people coming to Gujarat during the summit. Akhilesh Yadav and his father and chief of

Samajwadi Party, Mulayam Singh Yadav, are considered arch rivals of BJP. They are reeling under the sweeping victory posted by the saffron party in the Hindi heartland in the recent parliamentary elections. Kansara said that the agency that was hired to put up hoardings and advertisements was now removing them citing 'technical reasons'. "They have already removed some 60 small advertisements from across the city and plan to remove the billboards in the next few days," Kansara told TOI. He claimed that the agency people were being pressurized by the state government."The government of Uttar Pradesh had entered into contract with the agency till January 15. Now they want to remove the advertisements which is breach of contract. This is purely because of pressure from the state government," Kansara added.
