Hyderabad: The Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) will prepare a ‘KCRcentric campaign’ for the ensuing Assembly elections to counter Opposition parties. Surveys carried out by independent agencies have revealed that TRS president and Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao enjoyed more popularity among the people than the welfare schemes implemented by the state government over the past four years. The surveys indicated that no other leader in any Opposition party at the moment matched the popularity and oratory skills of Mr Rao and the TRS wanted to utilise this to the maximum possible extent. Mr Rao had roped in six independent survey agencies to get feedback on the performance of the TRS government, ministers, MLAs, implementation of welfare schemes and the level of satisfaction of the people. The agencies have submitted reports to the CM every three months. He wanted to select the candidates for Assembly seats, devise the party’s campaign strategy based on the results of the survey.

About him being seated next to the PoK President, maybe he (Sidhu) didn’t know who he was,” added the Chief Minister. On his return to India, Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu said, “If one is invited as a guest of honour somewhere, then they have to sit wherever they are asked to.” Further clarifying, he said, “If someone (Pakistan Army Chief General Bajwa) comes and says that we belong to the same culture and we will open Kartarpur border on Guru Nanak Dev’s 550th Prakash Parv.

The growth outlook and the investment potential of states

The Indian economy is now growing at over 7% per year despite an uncertain external environment and mixed domestic conditions. Provisional estimates indicate that the economy grew at 6.7% during fiscal year 2017-18 (FY18). But high frequency quarterly data in the same estimates also indicate that the growth cycle bottomed out in the first quarter of FY18 and growth has exceeded 7% since the third quarter of FY18. Based on these high frequency indicators, which are much sharper than the blunt annual estimates, virtually all official and private forecasts, both domestic and international, have projected that the economy will grow at over 7% during FY19. This is not as high as the 8.7% average growth recorded during FY07 to FY11 as per the recent backcasting of the new gross domestic product (GDP) series (2011-12 base) in the report of the National Statistical Commission’s Committee on Real Sector Statistics. But it marks an upturn compared to the 6.8% average growth for the period FY12 to FY18. This return to 7% plus growth is quite remarkable given the mixed growth environment. Despite robust growth in the US and other advanced economies, the external outlook remains grim with gradual monetary tightening in these countries, elevated oil prices, and the Donald Trump-triggered tariff war. Internally, the price situation is still benign. But rainfall is still in deficit in large parts of the economy, though the situation is improving. The economy has also not yet fully recovered from the shocks of demonetization and the goods and services tax (GST), though their short-term growth effects seem to be fading. That growth has remained high despite this mixed environment has much to do with the fact that a large part of the economy, particularly relating to agriculture and the public services segment, is supply-driven and independent of demand-side market sentiments. Though these supply-side drivers reappear on the demand side because of the circular flow of income, there are clearly limits to such supply-driven growth, as opposed to productivity or demand-driven growth. For the growth prospects of what Indira Rajaraman has called the “core economy” (Mint, 6 July)— the economy excluding agriculture and public services—investment is perhaps the single most important driver, especially when the export outlook is bleak. The quarterly data cited earlier indicates that along with overall growth, the growth of real investment or gross fixed capital formation (GFCF) also bottomed out in the first quarter of FY18 and has risen since then.

Damon. “I knew there had been a seismic shift (with films like ‘The Bourne Identity’), and little did I know I was going to be part of that in the curtain falling on my contract. I knew they had to make adjustments. They had strong competition and they haven’t reinvented it, but given it a much more muscular, dynamic twist,” Brosnan told Rake magazine.“When

I played him (Bond), you have to let the audience in that this is a fantastic joke. What I am doing here, jumping off a motorcycle and catching up a plane, is completely preposterous. But for me you had to let them in,” he added. The franchise will be getting a new face to lead after Craig bows out with one final film, scheduled to release next year.

You can’t buy class: Jose Mourinho slams Pep Guardiola’s Man City over documentary AFP

SPORTS ROUNDUP

Asian Games 2018: Bahrain’s Adam Batirov stuns Sushil Kumar in 74kg catergory

Manchester: Jose Mourinho accused Manchester City of lacking class in a scathing response to his own appearances in a documentary series about the Premier League champions. The eight-part series, ‘All or Nothing’ was released by streaming service Amazon last week amid much fanfare. The flyon-the-wall episodes focus on Pep Guardiola’s magnificent efforts in winning last season’s English title, with the producers boasting of their unprecedented access to the champions over the season. But the Manchester United manager was surprised, and clearly angered, by the number of times he appears, or is the

subject of comments, in the series.“I haven’t seen it but I know a few things about the movie,” Mourinho told reporters ahead of Sunday’s clash at Brighton.“You don’t need to be disrespectful to have a fantastic movie.“My reaction is if you are a rich club you can buy top players, you cannot buy class. That is my first reaction.“The second reaction is because I am in the movie I could ask for some royalties.“But if they send me one of the shirts they had in the tunnel when we played there, the shirts that were saying ‘We did it on derby day.’ If they send me one of these shirts, I give up about the royalties.

Jakarta: In a major upset, two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar was on Sundau stunned by Bahrain’s Adam Batirov in the 74 kg category, as the Indian wrestling team’s campaign at the 18th Asian Games began on a sour note here. while Batirov did not miss his chances. He led 3-2 with a takedown and then pushed the Indian out for a win. Sushil was not yet out of the competition and if Batirov makes the final, the Indian will be in with a chance to win bronze through the repechage. Jahan, who accused the cricketer of domestic violence and extramarital affair demanded Rs. 10 lakh per month but her claims were turned down by the court. However, judge Neha Sharma approved the maintenance claim for their daughter Aairah Shami which is Rs. 80,000 per month according to a report by Zee News.Shami’s advocate made clear the right-arm bowler was open to pay his daughter’s maintenance charge since the beginning but refused to allocate any share towards his wife after she switched back to her modelling

and acting career.Jahan’s advocate defended her client by stating she was still aiming to revive her career but after the Alipore Court refused the claims, she is now aiming to approach the High Court. Shami said his love for cricket helped him battle the off-field problems that pegged him back a few months ago as he made an impressive comeback in the ongoing first Test against England. It was a fine return for the 28-year-old Shami, who was accused of domestic violence and extra-marital affair by his wife Hasin Jahan some months back. He also sustained injuries after being involved in an accident and later missed the one-off Afghanistan Test for failing the Yo-Yo fitness test.

We understand that players are playing for their careers: coach Bangar Nottingham: Assistant coach Sanjay Bangar says India’s batsmen are under tremendous pressure and “playing for their careers” after their horror run in the first two Tests against England resulted in embarrassing defeats. World number one India trail the five-match series 0-2, but put up a solid batting display on the first day of the third game to 307 for six at stumps. “...the players themselves are under tremendous pressure - they are playing for

their careers. We understand that,” Bangar said at the end of first day’s play.“To make at times when things don’t really work in your favour, it is important to maintain composure, have the same sort of sense whether things are going well or not going well. Maintaining your equilibrium, that helps.”The batsmen’s poor performances had put a question mark on the support staff, but Bangar said that such pressure only comes with the job.“All of us understand clearly

Business

there is no magic wand we can work on any batsman. You have to understand the last five Test matches we played abroad have been in really trying conditions except for the Centurion Test.“Take the Johannesburg Test, which we from within the group believe was one of our best performances, not in terms of the number of runs but the victory we achieved in trying circumstances. So what we value is that Test win over any Test win we have had.

The batsmen’s poor performances had put a question mark on the support staff, but Bangar said that such pressure only comes with the job.

Global cues, macros to dictate markets direction

Mumbai: With the Q1FY19 results season showing some signs of gradual improvement in corporate earnings growth albeit on a lower base driving the equity markets to their all time high, experts believe that the performance of the markets over the next few months would depend on the strength of economic recovery, level of crude oil prices and global trade tensions. According to Kotak Institutional Equities, crude oil prices may have a large influence on India’s macro if the Iran-US situation were to deteriorate into ‘hard’ sanctions on exports of oil from Iran, which will upset global oil supply-demand balance. “India’s macro position would worsen if oil prices were to shoot above $80 per barrel. We note that a $10/bbl change in crude oil prices results in 50 basis point impact on current account deficit and GDP, 30 basis point impact on inflation, modest impact on gross fiscal deficit through higher subsidies on

kerosene and LPG. The fiscal deficit could rise further if the government was to reduce taxes on diesel and gasoline in order to mitigate the impact of higher oil prices,” it said. The equity valuations at the moment are on the higher side as the markets have priced in a strong growth in corporate earnings and further improvement in India’s macroeconomic situation. Any disappointment on these fronts could lead to de-rating of several stocks. “Volume growth figures could disappoint street’s lofty expectations unless the recovery is led by new job creation and investment and not simply a normalisation of demand conditions post the twin ‘blows’ of demonetisation and GST,” Kotak Securities said. The markets would also have to contend with any contagion effect of the troubles in the Turkish economy and weakness in global economy on escalation of global trade issues.

New Delhi: India’s current account deficit is expected to widen to 2.8 per cent of the GDP in this financial year, says a Nomura report. With rising oil prices, depreciating rupee and outflow of portfolio investments, there are concerns that CAD might rise in the current fiscal.“Overall, we expect the current account deficit to widen to 2.8 per cent of GDP in FY19 from 1.9 per cent in FY18,” the Japanese financial services major said. It further said that “balance of payment (BOP) funding to remain a challenge in FY19 as the basic BOP (current account + net FDI) is negative and portfolio flows also

remain negative”. CAD, which is the difference between the inflow and outflow of foreign exchange, jumped to $48.7 billion, or 1.9 per cent of GDP, in 2017-18 fiscal. This was higher than $14.4 billion, or 0.6 per cent, CAD in FY17. According to official figures India’s trade deficit, or the gap between exports and imports, in July widened to $18 billion, the most in more than five years. Trade shortfall puts pressure on the current account deficit (CAD), a key vulnerability for the economy. India’s exports rose by 14.32 per cent to $25.77 billion in July, while imports during the month were valued at $43.79 billion.

India may see FY19 CAD widen over 2.5 per cent According to Nomura, the downside risks to exports remain due to a weaker global growth outlook though currency depreciation could provide some relief to exporters. On the other hand, import growth, is likely to remain elevated in the near-term due to high oil prices, though weak rupee and domestic slowdown will moderate imports in the coming quarters. The rupee has been among the worst-performing currencies against the dollar so far this year and settled below the 70-mark for the first time in history on August 16 on strong demand for the US dollar amid ongoing Turkish crisis. Meanwhile, Moody’s and other experts

have said that CAD will widen to 2.5 per cent of the GDP in the current fiscal due to higher oil prices that has been accentuated by rupee depreciation.Joy Rankothge, Vice-President — senior analyst, Moody’s Investors Service said while the weaker rupee will benefit exports at the margins, it is unlikely to reverse the trade deficit, which hit a five-year high of $8.02 billion in July.“India’s current account deficit is likely to widen to 2.5 per cent in FY19, up from 1.5 per cent in fiscal 2017 due to higher oil prices and strong non-oil import demand as domestic demand accelerates,” he said.

Macro instability due to UPA policies, says Arun Jaitley

New Delhi: Arun Jaitley, on Sunday, blamed the policies of Congress-led UPA government for India’s macro instability and equating it to poor quality of growth. During the UPA regime, “fiscal discipline was compromised and the banking system was advised to go in for reckless lending notwithstanding the fact that it would eventually put the banks at a risk. And yet when the UPA moved out of power in 2014, the last three year record, even in terms of growth, was less than modest,” Mr Jaitley wrote in Facebook. The comment come after a committee constituted by the National Statistical Commission in a report last week said that the economy clocked a 10.08 per cent growth rate in 2006-07 under the then PM Manmohan Singh, the highest since liberalisation of the economy in 1991. This has resulted in a heated debate between Congress and BJP as

the report comes a year ahead of the Lok Sabha polls. However, the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) said on Sunday that “these are not official estimates” and the data will be released officially later. National Statistical Commission (NSC) too said the methodology for backcasting GDP series is “work in progress” and yet to be finalised. Mr Jaitley said that the high growth witnessed during the UPA’s reign should be seen in the global context as all economies were growing during the boom years, which was not peculiar only to India. “However, post 2014, when the global economy was in slowdown mode, it was India and India alone which has been the fastest growing economy in the world for the last four years and has consistently overtaken China in the growth rate,” the Union minister wrote.
