The recommendation has been sent to the President for his approval. The disqualification will lead to by-polls in Delhi.

EC recommends disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs for holding office of profit New Delhi: In a major blow to the Arvind Kejriwal government in Delhi, the Election Commission (EC) on Friday recommended disqualification of 20 Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLAs for holding ‘office of profit,’ according to media reports. The recommendation has been sent to President Ramnath Kovind for his nod. The President is bound to go by the recommendation of the Commission. In cases where petitions are made seeking disqualification of lawmakers, the President sends a reference to the EC which decides on the case by sending back its opinion. Following the shocking move, the AAP has approached the Delhi High Court against EC’s recommendation to disqualify its MLAs. In the present case, the petition was made to disqualify 21 MLAs, but one had resigned a few months back. The EC, however, said that the disqualification is sub-judice, and it will not comment on what recommendation has been given to the

These are the 20 AAP MLAs the Election Commission has found guilty of ‘office of profit’

President. A petition filed by lawyer Prashant Patel sought the disqualification of the MLAs on the grounds that they were holding an ‘office of profit’ as parliamentary secretaries. In 2015, soon after AAP swept the Delhi elections, Kejriwal had appointed 21 legislators as parliamentary secretaries. This disqualification will lead to by-polls in Delhi. The ruling AAP has a massive majority in the Delhi Assembly with 67 out of 70 seats. This disqualification will not meddle with AAP’s position in the assembly, but is definitely a serious setback for the party. The MLAs’ pleas that the case against them be dropped were rejected by the EC in June 2017.

PM Modi ‘best doctor’ to cure India of major ‘diseases’: Arjun Meghwal Panjim : Union minister Arjun Ram Meghwal today said Prime Minister Narendra Modi may not have an MBBS degree but he certainly is the “best doctor” to treat the illnesses that plague the country. The Minister of State for Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation made the remarks during the ongoing MRAI International Indian Metals Recycling Conference here. “There were some other countries too which got Independence from the British rule in 1947. India, however, did not see the growth rate as it should have and that was because of six major ‘diseases’. “No doubt, there has been development, but not at the speed which was desired of it,” he told the conference. Meghwal said cleanliness, corruption, poverty, communalism, casteism and terrorism are the six diseases, identified by the prime minister, that gripped the country and are responsible for its slow pace of growth. “Modi ji has resolved to ensure the desired pace of growth for India,” Meghwal said, adding that “Modiji is not an MBBS doctor but whatever diseases have gripped the country.

Saeed, the chief of the Jamaat-ud-Dawah (JuD), was released from house arrest in Pakistan in November.

Mumbai attack plotter Saeed must be prosecuted to law’s fullest extent: US Realise what’s in front of you, take action against Hafiz Saeed: India tells Pak

New Delhi: India has criticised Pakistan for turning a blind eye towards the evidence available against Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed. Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar on Friday said, “If somebody is a designated global terrorist, it’s done based on a lot of evidence available in public domain. You can close your eyes, pretend nothing happened but they (Pakistan) have to realise what’s in front of them and take action against such people, who are freely operating from their soil.” Pakistan Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, in a recent interview to Geo TV, had said that there was no case registered against Saeed in Islamabad and without it, action cannot be initiated against him. Dismissing Abbasi’s remarks on Mumbai attack mastermind, the United States made it clear that he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Heavy casualties likely on Pakistani side as India responds to ceasefire violations

gns, Jammu : In continued retaliation to mortar shelling from across the international border in R S Pura and Arnia sectors in Jammu district on Friday, the Border Security Force (BSF) damaged four more Pakistani mortar positions, apparently resulting in heavy casualties on the opposite side. “We have seen ambulances moving at many places across the border opposite both these sectors,” said sources. They identified some of these areas as Kundanpur, Gadyal, Haria and Jagwal. Four mortar positions on Pakistani side — from where Rangers were firing 82 mm and 60 mm mortars — are damaged, they said. A defence position in a farmhouse behind Harpal and Jagwal village, too, has been hit, they added. A senior BSF official said that by the intensity of their retaliation and the number of ambulances moving on the Pakistani side, the “casualty across the border appears to be very high.

gns, Washington: The United States has called for Hafiz Saeed’s prosecution “to the fullest extent of the law”, following Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi’s remark that no action could be taken against the UN-designated terrorist. Abbasi, during an interview to Geo TV on Tuesday, referred to Saeed as ‘sahib’ or ‘sir’. “There is no case against Hafiz Saeed sahib in Pakistan. Only when there is a case can there be action,” Abbasi said when asked why there was no action against Saeed. Reacting strongly to the comments, State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert said the US believes that Saeed should be prosecuted and they have told Pakistan as much. “We believe that he should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. He is listed by the UNSC 1267, the

al-Qaida Sanctions Committee for targeted sanctions due to his affiliation with Lashkar-e-Taiba, which is a designated foreign terror organisation,” Nauert told reporters at her daily news conference on Thursday. “We have made our points and concerns to the Pakistani government very clear.

Maintaining law not our job: SC refuses to cancel CBFC nod to ‘Padmaavat’ Mumbai/New Delhi/Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh): The Supreme Court today rejected a plea seeking urgent hearing on a fresh PIL that sought cancellation of Censor Board’s certificate granted to controversial Bollywood movie ‘Padmaavat’. A bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud also trashed the submission that the screening of the movie may cause serious threat to life, property and law and order. “Maintaining law and order is not our job. That is the job of the state. Prayer rejected,” the bench said while refusing to accord urgent hearing on the fresh plea filed by lawyer M L Sharma. Sena must be shown its limits

I t is obvious that the hard-line Rajput Karni Sena has decided to take the law in its hands after protests by its members and supporters failed to prevent the release of the controversial Sanjay Leela Bhansali movie Padmaavat. The Sena lost all hope when the Supreme Court threw out an order issued by BJP-ruled state governments, banning the release of the film in their states, ruling that the right to creative expression was inviolable. It also reminded state governments that they cannot use the excuse of perceived law and order problems to prevent the exhibition of a movie that has been cleared by the Central Board of Film Certification, which is the sole agency to approve or disapprove a film’s release. Now directing their ire at the Board, Sena members have threatened to prevent chairman Prasoon Joshi from entering Rajasthan, where he is supposed to attend the Jaipur Literature Festival on the same day as the film’s scheduled release. And some of their women have threatened to commit ‘johar’ (self-immolation) on the day Padmaavat is released. Four Rajput women are reportedly sitting in protest in Chittorgarh since Monday to express their resentment over the movie. Sena members are also threatening theatres showing the movie with dire consequences and they have already vandalised one in Bihar. Perhaps it gives an idea about the cultural orientation of Karni Sena when one considers the track record of its leader Lokendra Singh Kalvi. Son of a former Union cabinet minister, Kalvi has all along been looking for a cause to rally his community around so that he could become their leader after he miserably failed in mainstream politics. He led a massive Rajput agitation against the Sati ban following the Roop Kanwar episode in 1987. Wearing different hats at different times, he kept switching sides between BJP and Congress before apparently settling down in BJP. In the 90s, he spent much of his time in political wilderness, but in the early 2000s he launched a pro-reservation agitation for the economically weaker castes, along with another powerful Rajput leader. The two even floated a political party named Social Justice Front, but it failed to make any grade in electoral politics. But Kalvi kept the flag of ambition flying, which saw him found Karni Sena in 2006. And Padmavati has come as a handy tool. Just as the advocates of free expression have their right to express their opinion, those who hold opposing views have their right to dissent. But neither side has any right to impose its views on the other. If Kalvi and his Karni Sena people do not like the story line of Padmaavat, or have objection about any aspect of the movie, they are free to boycott it. But they have no right to prevent others from watching it, or threaten violence against people behind it.

Here’s how married actresses are breaking the stereotypes in Bollywood

In what looks like a welcome change in our times, gone are the days when leading actresses would think twice before tying the knot. No longer afraid to commit to their personal lives, actresses in the showbiz have not only conquered the silver screen with some powerful roles over the last couple of years, but have also emerged victorious in shattering the commonlyheld presumption that women cannot go back to being successful after entering wedlock or giving birth. The likes of Kareena Kapoor Khan, Rani Mukerji, Vidya Balan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Sridevi are the ultimate beacons of this change. Even Bollywood’s leading lady, Anushka Sharma, who recently tied the knot at the age of 29, joined the sets of Zero right after her honeymoon. The talented Radhika Apte, who is married too, is playing powerful lead roles. Ileana D’Cruz also hinted at being secretly married to longtime boyfriend Andrew Kneebone in a recent social media post.

Salman Khan has a history of being linked to his co-stars. In fact, she was more than appreciative of Katrina’s performance in the film. “Why will I feel unhappy or insecure? In fact, Tiger Zinda Hai is an amazing movie — Katrina’s performance is outstanding!” she says. “The media will write anything, I cannot do anything about it. I have nothing to react on it.”

Ranveer Singh aces mad king act in latest Padmaavat teaser

After fighting a long battle with fringe outfits and CBFC, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s magnum opus Padmaavat will hit screens on January 25. Before we watch this tale of valour and bravery on the silver screen, the makers have

released the first dialogue promo of the film. In the 30 second video, Ranveer Singh, who essays the role of Sultan Allaudin Khilji, has convinced the audience that he will own his character like none. The promo begins

with a monologue by Ranveer where he is heard mentioning the dream of the Khilji Dynasty to rule the world. But cutting him in between is Rajput king Maharawal Ratan Singh aka Shahid Kapoor who

has faith in the heroism of Rajputs. He says, “Keh dijiye apne sultan se, unki talwaar se zyada loha hum suryavanshiyon ke seene mein hai (Tell your Sultan, there is more power in the hearts of Suryavanshis than in the swords of the Khiljis).” The powerful monologues of the two lead actors have made the wait for Bhansali’s masterpiece even more exciting. Ranveer’s scarred and bloodied body, long tresses and kohled eyes as Allaudin Khilji look striking and it is for the first time that we have got a glimpse of veteran actor Raza Murad in the movie.

showing no desire to spend a minute longer in the heat than necessary and no sign of the injury issues she reported after her second round match, progressed when Kostyuk served up her ninth double fault of the contest.

India’s proposed investment treaty terms leave foreign partners cold

Corporates open to public gaze as data available online: Jaitley New Delhi: Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday said online availability of data has opened corporate activities to public gaze and raised the possibility of detecting any impropriety. He said the ease at which the data is available now and is open for dissection has put pressure on everyone to ensure that there is compliance and transparency.“It’s now all open to public gaze. And being open to public gaze has its own advantages. It has the advantage that there is a pressure on everyone to make sure that compliances do take place, everyone is on his feet and realised that if there is any impropriety the possibility of it being detected is going to be very high,” said Jaitley, who also holds the charge of the Corporate Affairs Ministry (MCA). The minister was speaking at the launch of National CSR Data Portal and Corporate Data Portal of the MCA. He said because of online availability of data, it has become easier to dissect any impropriety, including that of funds being channeled through shell companies. “Therefore this transparency is good for the system, good for corporate India.

gns, New Delhi: Having cancelled investment treaties with about 50 foreign governments last year, India is struggling to convince some to accept new terms that make it harder to seek international arbitration for disputes, sources familiar with the talks said. From New Delhi’s perspective those treaties, mainly struck in the 1990s when it was desperate for foreign capital, left it too exposed to potential claims awarded by international arbitrators. To reduce that exposure, India has drafted a new model agreement that legal advisors say is similar to those used by other big emerging market economies like Brazil and Indonesia, but some of its foreign partners are baulking at the more restrictive approach.

This is a special place and that thought of being with any other franchise was never a question. So that was a very easy answer for me,” he further added. Apart from Dhoni, CSK also retained Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja.

Investors’ summit: UP seeks investment from Gujarat gns, Ahmedabad : The Uttar Pradesh government on Thursday held its sixth and final roadshow in Ahmedabad in the run-up to the UP Investors’ Summit in February, seeking investments from Gujarat industrialists. Deputy chief minister Dinesh Sharma said they received encouraging response. “We are looking at industries from Gujarat to invest in Uttar Pradesh. Textile and pharmaceuticals are two specific sectors from Gujarat

“We have received encouraging response and will give a preference to Gujarat industry for investment in the state.” According to him, the investors’ summit is being held with a focus on developing the underdeveloped areas. “Uttar Pradesh has undertaken a number of reforms and policy changes to spur growth,” said Sharma, who was there with the state industries minister Satish Mahana and others. “We have discussed point-to-point

apart from logistics, gems and jewellery,” Sharma who was part of the UP team told reporters after the meeting. Jignesh Mevani shown black flags by section of Valmiki community in Ahmedabad gns, Ahmedabad : Members of the Valmiki community protested against Dalit leader and Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani while he was addressing a meeting of construction and safai workers in Behrampura area of Ahmedabad on Thursday. The meeting was called to plan a protest for the rights of the Valmiki community, which is considered to be the largest socially stigmatised Dalit group. Members of the Valmiki community are still considered untouchables. However, around 30 members of the community gathered outside the venue of the meeting, Dr Ambedkar Hall, with black flags. President of Gujarat Valmiki Sangathan, Lalji Bhagat, said, “Jignesh Mevani is politicising the issue. He is a stooge of the Congress and has actually done nothing to solve our problems. In fact, he discriminates against us and does not really stand up for those who clean gutters and the streets of the city. He does not even know

our problems and is addressing meetings. A few members of our Valmiki community are inside and they are traitors. We will call all members of our community and fight against him.” Police asked the protesters to leave the premises of the hall immediately. Reacting to the protests, Mevani said, “I welcome the protesters. It shows that I am a threat to the RSS and the BJP. It is an attempt by them and wherever I go they send such people.”

international UK: Indian-origin ‘Chicken King’ told off for sending biscuits to MPs London: Britain’s Indian-origin ‘Chicken King’, Ranjit Singh Boparan, has been told off for sending boxes of biscuits to MPs investigating his company over a hygiene scandal. The House of Commons’ Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee, which had opened an investigation after an undercover media report revealed serious breaches at one of Ranjit Boparan’s factories last year, wrote to the businessman to stress that the gifts were an “inappropriate gesture”. Neil Parish, chairman of the committee, said the gifts to several MPs were an “unwarranted attempt to impugn the Committee’s impartiality”. “I would be grateful if you would respect the integrity and independence of the committee and avoid similar gestures in future,” he said in a letter to Ranjit Boparan. The gifts involved boxes of Fox Biscuits, a brand owned by the chicken king’s 2 Sisters Group, which the committee either returned or gave to local food banks. However, the company stressed there was nothing sinister in the Christmas presents. “It was approximately eight packets of Fox’s and Own Brand Biscuits which we send every year to a number of external stakeholders as a goodwill gesture at Christmas. We have responded formally to Parish explaining this,” a 2 Sisters Group spokesperson said.

Donald Trump ‘very eager’ to be probed

gns, Washington: US President Donald Trump is “very eager” to speak to the special counsel overseeing the Russia election meddling probe into claims that he colluded with Moscow, his lawyer said. Ty Cobb told CBS in interview excerpts released on Thursday that Mr Trump is “very eager to sit down and explain whatever is responsive to the questions” that Robert Mueller might pose. Mr Trump last week said he did not expect to meet with Mueller. “When they have no collusion ... it seems unlikely that you’d even have an interview,” Mr Trump told a news conference during which he repeated that there was no collusion several times. Those comments were a change from ones he made in June last year when he said he was “100 per cent” willing to testify under oath about conversations he had with former FBI director James Comey. The Mueller team is also looking at is Mr Trump’s abrupt firing of Comey in May and whether this was intended to thwart the Russia investigation — which could amount to obstruction of justice.

problems coming in the way of rapid growth and will come up with policies in different departments to bring in transparency and create a conducive environment. Patricia Dagorn, 57, was convicted of killing two men found dead in 2011 on the Cote d’Azur and of drugging two others. Prosecutors say she attempted to enrich herself by seducing older men she met mostly through a dating agency. The “Black Widow”, who denied all the charges against her, did not flinch as the verdict was handed down. Dagorn is already serving a five-year prison term for

Accuracy of Donald Trump’s medical report and height questioned Washington: Donald Trump’s surprisingly glowing medical report has led to questions about the accuracy of some of the data announced by White House physician Dr Ronny Jackson on Tuesday — including how a man in his 70s has apparently grown an inch in height, The Guardian reported. Mr Trump’s driving licence, issued in May 2012, stated his height as 6ft 2in. Yet according to the report issued by the White House physician on Tuesday, Mr Trump is 6ft 3in. The seeming growth spurt led to people comparing images of Mr Trump to celebrities who are allegedly of the same height. One image showed Mr Trump standing next to former baseball player Alex Rodriguez, who is 6ft 3in. Rodriguez looked considerably taller.

theft, fraud and sequestration involving an octogenarian in the French Alps in 2012 who had agreed to let her live with him in exchange for sexual relations. One of the men she poisoned, 91-year-old widower Robert Vaux, told reporters at the courthouse on Monday that Dagorn “was like a ray of sunshine in winter. When you are with a younger woman you know it won’t last but you don’t deny yourself the moment unless you’re a masochist”. The prosecution team called her a “perverted narcissist” while the defence spoke of a “victim” of loneliness. Attorney General

The New York Times tops ‘fake awards’ list gns, Washington: US President Donald Trump has escalated his attack on the media by announcing the ‘Fake News Awards’ for “very corrupt and dishonest” coverage, with a report in The New York Times topping the list. Mr Trump had coined the term ‘Fake News’ during his presidential campaign, targeting media houses for “biased” news. The President used Twitter to announce “the winners” of the unique awards. The list of “winners” was also displayed on the Republican National Committee’s website, which crashed soon after the awards were announced. Much of the list centered around coverage of stories on the investigation into whether the Trump campaign colluded with Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election. “2017 was a year of unrelenting bias, unfair news coverage, and even downright fake news. Studies have shown that over 90 per cent of the media’s coverage of President Trump is negative,” the list said. The “awards” were presented in list form and specified particular stories about his presidency.

Annie Brunet-Fuster described Dagorn as “not psychotic but psychopathic”. Police began suspecting Dagorn after the body of Michel Kneffel, a man in his 60s with whom she had been living at a residential hotel in Nice, was discovered in July 2011. No charges were filed at the time, but the investigation was reopened the following year after police found vials of Valium and personal documents belonging to about a dozen different men among her belongings. The documents included IDs, bank account details and health insurance cards.
