ENGLISH DAILY MORNING REPUTED NEWS PAPER, AHMEDABAD EDITION Editor : Kapilkumar M. Hirpara

Short News Madras HC restrains parties from erecting digital banners on roadsides in TN Chennai : The Madras High Court Wednesday restrained political parties from erecting digital banners on roadsides across Tamil Nadu till further orders. A division bench of Justices M Sathyanarayanan and P Rajamanickam issued the interim order. The bench was hearing a contempt petition by social activist Traffic Ramasamy seeking to punish officials for ‘failure’ to implement the court orders against unauthorised banners. Unless the state government and the local bodies come out with a clear undertaking that the rules and various orders passed by the court would be strictly implemented and no violation would take place, all political parties shall not put up any digital banners on the sides of the roads across the state till further orders.

Madras HC quashes criminal defamation proceedings against Rajinikanth Chennai : The Madras High Court Tuesday quashed criminal defamation proceedings initiated against actor Rajinikanth by a film financier in a lower court. The court earlier dismissed a civil suit filed by the financier against Rajinikanth with a cost of Rs 25,000, saying it was nothing but an abuse of the process of law to gain cheap publicity and keep a famous person on tenterhooks. Financier Mukuchand Bothra had alleged that Kasturi Raja, the father-in-law of Rajinikanth’s daughter, had borrowed Rs 65 lakh from him with an assurance that if the money was not repaid by him, the actor would repay it. Bothra had filed the criminal defamation complaint in a magistrate court, saying the words used by Rajinikanth that the civil suit was only to extort money and malign his name was per se defamatory. The actor sought quashing of the criminal defamation proceedings.

Amarinder Singh: Pakistan Army trying to revive militancy in Punjab

Chandigarh : Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder Singh on Tuesday reiterated that Pakistan’s decision to open the Kartarpur Corridor was an “ISI game-plan to help forces inimical to India, including the Sikhs For Justice (SFJ)”. Amarinder was reacting to the statement by the SFJ seeking Pakistan’s help to ‘liberate’ Punjab from India. The CM said it has exposed the nefarious designs of the organisation and its nexus with the Pakistani Army and the ISI. He also took exception to SFJ’s plans to hold Kartarpur Sahib Convention, 2019, coinciding with auspicious occasion of 550th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev. In a statement, Amarinder said, “It has also once again proved that the Pak government had always been, and continues to remain, a puppet regime, working at the behest of the Army there, he added. “The whole affair is a bigger conspiracy by the Pak Army, which is persistently trying to revive militancy in Punjab,” said the chief minister, reiterating his stand on the issue.

Congress became more cunning since Emergency: PM Modi hits back

Chennai: Hitting back at the Congress, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday it has humiliated every institution of democracy, be it the Army or the CAG. He said the main opposition party even questioned a Supreme Court verdict just because it did not like it, apparently hinting

at the continued assault by the party on him over the Rafale deal. The prime minister was interacting with booth level workers of Vellore, Kanchipuram, Viluppuram and south Chennai districts of Tamil Nadu, and Puducherry, through video conferencing from New Delhi. “The Congress party has become

more cunning since the days of Emergency,” he said, sharpening his assault on the Congress. Congress president Rahul Gandhi had on Sunday lashed out at the Modi government, saying he will not allow the “destruction” of institutions like the Supreme Court and the Reserve Bank of India. The BJP government believes “only one idea should run India”, Gandhi had told a public rally organised by his party’s southern ally the DMK in Chennai. Modi asked party workers to increase their outreach by creating awareness about his government’s welfare schemes. “From housing to health care, from sanitation to skills, there are schemes for every section of society,” he said, and asked booth level workers to reach out to people about those measures.

Ex-bureaucrats demand Yogi’s resignation over Bulandshahr violence

New Delhi: A group of former civil servants has written an open letter criticising the Centre and the Uttar Pradesh government for failing to take action on the killing of a policeman in Bulandshahr and demanded the resignation of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. The letter, signed by 83 former bureaucrats on Tuesday, asked citizens to

unite in a “crusade against the politics of hate and division - a politics which aims to destroy the fundamental principles on which our Republic is founded”. “It is a measure of the rapid erosion of constitutional values that we, as a group, have felt a compelling need to speak out as many as nine times in the last eighteen months,” the letter read. The

latest letter follows the December 3 killing of Inspector Subodh Kumar Singh and another man in Bulandshahr following mob violence over alleged cow slaughter. The main accused in the case is a leader of right-wing group Bajrang Dal. PTI had earlier reported that local BJP leaders had demanded his transfer after accusing him of creating obstacles for

Speaking at the Republic Summit in Mumbai, Shah also said he was sure that the Shiv Sena will be with the BJP in the next Lok Sabha elections. Trivandrum: BJP leader C K Padmanabhan, who had been observing indefinite hunger strike for the past 10 days outside the Secretariat in Kerala on the Sabarimala issue, was arrested and admitted to the hospital on Wednesday. Padmanabhan sat on the hunger strike after BJP state general secretary A N Radhakrishnan was arrested and shifted to the hospital as his health got deteriorated while continuing the fast. The hunger strike was launched by the BJP on December 3 to protest against the imposition of curfew under Section

Following Padmanabhan’s arrest, BJP leader Sobha Surendran will continue the BJP relay hunger strike. Rahul Gandhi checks in with his populist card

Inspired by the success of his party’s election victories in the just-concluded Assembly elections, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has made the call that all farmer loans should be written off. It is clear that Gandhi is proposing to make it central to his party’s electoral agenda ahead of the 2019 general election. In short, Gandhi has given short shrift to economic logic and embraced populism as his primary weapon to prevent Prime Minister Narendra Modi from claiming a second term. The bigger risk is that this desperate gamble may set in motion an aggressive round of competitive populism. The timing of the remarks too are suspect, given that it comes with the Congress very clearly on the back foot and could well be designed as a distraction from its present troubles. First, the Supreme Court verdict on Friday dismissed the writ charging the government with mala fide in the deal for buying Rafale aircraft. Effectively, it blew a hole in Gandhi’s claims, made rather shrilly during the just-concluded electioneering, that the Modi regime was embroiled in corruption. Second, and probably more damaging for the party, a high court verdict indicted a senior Congress leader, Sajjan Kumar, and awarded him a life sentence for his role in the pogrom that led to the murder of 3,000 Sikhs in 1984. The party will find it difficult to shake off this taint, especially since the high court scrutiny of the riots is yet to conclude and the fear is that more skeletons will tumble out of the Congress cupboard. Even if this were not the case, the call for a nation wide loan waiver is fiscally preposterous. The Union government, which is already under pressure to meet its fiscal targets for the year, is in no position to bear this load. State governments are in an even worse place; in fact, states such as Karnataka and Punjab—both ruled by the Congress— are struggling to fund the electoral promise. Worse there is no evidence that such write-offs contribute in improving the lot of farmers; at best they provide stop-gap help and that too only to a section of the farmers. Politically too, there is no clear evidence that populism carves out an electoral advantage. Even in the just-concluded election to Madhya Pradesh, the Congress, despite its promise of a farm loan waiver, fell just short of a majority—the Bharatiya Janata Party, which had not promised such a palliative, ended up a close second. However, there is every chance that the opposition parties, unbridled by the burden of office, will up the ante on populist promises in the run-up to the electoral showdown next year.

However, Langer said that he enjoyed the confrontation. “I thought it was brilliant. As the two captains and they’re trying to stamp their authority on the game

and I don’t think at any point there was any abuse or any real aggression to it,” Langer told ‘Fox Cricket’. “In fact there was a bit of humour and there’s been a lot of talk about banter. There’s got to be some in a Test match. It’s a great part of the game, and there was actually a bit of humour, a bit of Aussie humour as well. “That’s what we pride ourselves on we’ve got a bad reputation in a lot of ways, but when there’s a bit of humour in it I thought it was a good exchange,” he said. Langer said he was happy that his team could stand its ground against an aggressive India during the Test.

Ahmedabad : Terming the farm loan waiver a one time relief, the Gujarat government on Wednesday hinted that there is no immediate plans to waive off farm loans. Gujarat deputy chief minister Nitin Patel said the government would instead continue to meet the fundamental requirements for farmers. Patel’s statement came in the wake of the Congress party writing off farmers’ debts in the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Chhatishgrah and Rajasthan, fulfilling a promise made by the party ahead of the Assembly polls. “Our style is different. We aim at overall development of agriculture and make it sustainable. We want to make farmers happy, and not just through loan waiver ’’, said the minister adding, “Not 8, but the Gujarat government provides 10 hours electricity to farmers and recently we have provided new 1 lakh

farm electricity connections. Gujarat is leading in providing drip irrigation infrastructure and irrigation supply has been maintained in Narmada canal command area. All these at the cost of Rs 900 crore. Loan waiver is one time relief. Gujarat government has been meeting all the requirements to offer a permanent solution to

the farmers.’’ Earlier in the day, chief minister Vijay Rupani, replying to a tweet by Congress president Rahul Gandhi, said, “Under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi, Gujarat has always taken steps in favour of farmers. For the same reason, Gujarat farmers for one more time gave the BJP a chance to serve them. Farmers

have rejected the Congress for the seventh consecutive time’’. The tweet by Gandhi read, ‘’The Congress party has managed to wake the CMs of Assam and Gujarat from their deep slumber. PM is still asleep. We will wake him up too(sic)’’’ Rupani was referring to the BJP victory in 2017 assembly elections.

Flexible working may cut CO2 emissions by 214 million tonnes: Study

Dubai : Switching to flexible working, that allows employees to work from closer to home and cut commute time, may reduce the levels of carbon dioxide emissions by 214 million tonnes per year by 2030, a new study has revealed. The study, carried out by independent researchers at Regus, found that if the growth in flexible workspace continues to increase, people around the world would save over 3.53 billion hours commuting every year by 2030. The amount of carbon dioxide saved by this reduction is equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 5.5 billion trees over ten years. According to the report, the UK is set to save 7.8 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030, based on commuters saving 115 million hours from a turn to flexible working. The US could see the largest annual carbon emission saving by 2030. It is predicted to save nearly 960 million hours in commuting time, and with US commuters relying heavily on cars, this time saved translates to over 100 million tons of CO2.

Gujarat: Jasdan bypoll could be litmus test for BJP ahead of 2019 Lok Sabha election

Ahmedabad: The high-stakes assembly bypolls in Jasdan on 20 December will put to test the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP’s) strategy in the crucial Saurasthra region ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. It will also be a test for candidates who switched sides. While a victory will help the ruling party further its goal of retaining all the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat, a loss could put it on the back foot in the Saurasthra region where it suffered a major setback in the 2017 assembly elections. The Jasdan assembly seat fell vacant in July after sitting member of legislative assembly (MLA) Kunvarji Bavaliya quit the Congress to join the BJP.

international US plans complete withdrawal of troops from Syria

Washington : The United States is considering a total withdrawal of US forces from Syria as it nears the end of its campaign to retake all of the territory once held by Islamic State, US officials told Reuters on Wednesday. Such a decision, if confirmed, would upend assumptions about a longer-term US military presence in Syria, which US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis and other senior US officials had advocated to help ensure Islamic State cannot re-emerge. Still, President Donald Trump has previously expressed a strong desire to bring troops home from Syria when possible. The timing of the withdrawal was not immediately clear and US officials

who spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity did not disclose details about the deliberations, including who was involved. It was unclear how soon a decision could be announced. The Pentagon and White House declined to comment. The United States still has about 2,000 troops in Syria, many of the special operations forces working closely with an alliance of Kurdish and Arab militias known as the Syrian Democratic Forces, or SDF. The partnership with the SDF over the past several years has led to the defeat of Islamic State in Syria but outraged NATO ally Turkey, which views Kurdish YPG forces in the alliance as an extension of a militant group fighting inside Turkey.

The name was chosen by Aidan Bell, the boss of the firm which paid thousands at an auction for the right, The Guardian reported. Trump in June last year withdrew the US from the Paris climate change agreement, which commits countries to keeping a limit on rising global temperatures.

The Yemeni woman is about to get her to wish after winning her fight for a waiver from the Trump administration’s travel ban so she can fly to California where her 2-year-old son is on life support. American-Islamic Relations sued this week, ending a year-long battle for the family. Swileh is planning to fly to San Francisco on Wednesday to see Abdullah at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland. “This will allow us to mourn with dignity,” the boy’s father, Ali Hassan, said in a statement provided by the Sacramento chapter of the Council on American-Islamic

Relations.Hassan, who is a US citizen and lives in Stockton, brought Abdullah to California in the fall to get treatment for a genetic brain disorder. “My wife is calling me every day wanting to kiss and hold her son for the one last time,” Hassan said, choking up as he made a public plea at a news conference Monday, a day before the government granted the visa.
